Types of Hotels in Tokyo

  • Luxury Hotels in Tokyo - World-class five-star properties rivaling any city on earth, heavily concentrated in high-end districts like Ginza, Marunouchi, Otemachi, and Roppongi.
  • Boutique Hotels in Tokyo - A rapidly growing, stylish scene of highly curated and artistic properties found in trendy neighborhoods like Shibuya, Omotesando, and Asakusa.
  • Business Hotels in Tokyo - Tokyo's signature mid-market hotel category. These highly efficient rooms are famously compact, spotlessly clean, fully automated, and offer incredible value for money near transit lines.
  • Capsule Hotels in Tokyo - The ultimate, space-saving budget experience. Modern "premium capsule" brands offer sleek pods; note that most properties are strictly single-gender or feature completely separated floors.
  • Ryokan & Japanese-Style Stays - Traditional inns featuring woven tatami mat flooring, futon bedding, and local onsen (hot spring) baths - perfect for a culturally authentic stay.
  • Family-Friendly Hotels in Tokyo - Standard Tokyo hotel rooms are notoriously small. Families should look for properties specifically offering triple/quad room setups or apartment-style layouts.
  • Apartment Hotels in Tokyo - Modern, spacious accommodation featuring private kitchenettes and in-room laundry machines - highly recommended for longer stays.

When to Visit Tokyo

  • Spring (March to May): World-famous cherry blossom season (typically peaking late March to early April). This is the most beautiful but also the most expensive time to visit - hotels must be booked several months in advance.
  • Summer (June to August): Hot and humid, but pairs with dynamic local summer festivals and massive fireworks displays (like the Sumida River Fireworks). Note that June marks the seasonal rainy period.
  • Autumn (September to November): Arguably the finest all-round travel window. You will enjoy crisp, mild weather, stunning autumn foliage starting in mid-November, and far fewer crowds than spring.
  • Winter (December to February): Cold but dry and consistently sunny. This season features spectacular winter illumination displays, traditional New Year festivities, and generally the lowest hotel rates of the year.
  • Planning Around Peak Domestic Holidays: To avoid sudden price spikes and sold-out rooms, try to avoid booking during Japan's major domestic holiday weeks: Golden Week (late April to early May), Obon Festival (mid-August), and the New Year period.

How to Get Around in Tokyo

  • Trains and Subways: The fastest way to navigate the city. The network is divided between JR lines, Tokyo Metro, and Toei Subway lines.
  • Fares & Tap-to-Ride: For the ultimate flexibility, load a digital or physical Suica or Pasmo IC card to your smartphone wallet. Alternatively, you can use contactless credit cards to tap through ticket gates across 11 major private railway and subway networks (including Tokyo Metro), just note that JR East lines require a traditional transit card.
  • Walking: While you will take trains between major hubs, individual neighborhoods like Harajuku, Akihabara, and Ginza are incredibly pedestrian-friendly and best explored on foot.
  • Taxis & Ride-hailing: Spotlessly clean and highly reliable, though fares can get expensive. Remember that Tokyo's train network stops running around midnight to 1:00 AM, so plan your late nights accordingly.
