Could Be Better
This place has the potential to be a fantastic spot if some money was spent. For example, cooling system/air conditioning or fans that don’t sound like a truck, a shower that has consistent water temperature, a place that serves morning coffee or breakfast, better cleaning, and curtains that aren’t torn and old, and when the one window is open if there is a wind there is a banging noise. The location is perfect but the hotel not so much.
Very pleasant staff. No A/C. Very soft mattress. Opened several windows and hotel provided a floor fan. Room cooled down after sundown.
The building is 122 years old and you can see that But it’s fairly well kept up and has lots of charm The room was large, with a very nice bathroom The living area had a large three piece couch and a nice balcony with a view of the ocean The staff helped us out by bringing us a toaster and microwave, as the restaurant was temporarily closed Overall it was a great place to stay
Good.
Loved my stay: Devonport is a great base for exploring Auckland, and the run along the coast to a Cheltenham beach around the headland is fantastic. My room was comfortable but I would have appreciated a desk where I could sit and work.
loved it was so near to town but hated that the booking site says parking included but it wasn't included and they had no parking, we needed to find our own on-street parking. i would not stay there again because my car was not safe.
.
This is one of the coolest hotels i ever stayed 120 years old yet very modern. When coming in on ferry you see this beautiful hotel just atend of pier. It looks like a top Monte Carlio hotel. Beautiful inside too The rooms very spacious with 10 foot ceilings. Large jet tub Happy hour in the historic bar
Overall really great break away
Lovely room and just a amble down the promenade to the venue
Great view
Comfortable tidy room
Stay Here for a Slice of History
What an amazing historic building! The room was very grand - the highest ceilings you can comprehend. I felt like royalty has probably stayed here in the past. Obviously with buildings of this age it comes with challenges and makes it hard to maintain but I loved staying here - view was incredible. I would not recommend taking a limited mobility person but I enjoyed feeling the history and grandness and echoes of days past.
We had a great stay, staff were helpful, great location, comfy bed and the hotel had everything we needed. The room upgrade was a great bonus.
Lovely modern property Very comfortable
A building with character, great staff who are very obliging, and a very convenient location. Perhaps there are some tired parts, but we really enjoyed our stay.
Lovely old Hotel, room was very comfortable and view of Auckland from the room was great
It was cold, with on aircon and the electric blanket did not work. Otherwise a real nice homely place to stay. I will stay there again
Great
Short shower
Below average the shower had no temp regulator so if anyone else on hotel turned on their shower it when hot then cold
Great stay
Beautiful old hotel, needs a bit of TLC, but place is full of character. Loved it.
It is a bit in need of a refurb, but everyone was pleasant to deal with. Room had a nice view of harbour
Easy location from ferry and parking, wonderful character rooms and dining, quiet in evenings but roadworks outside in May2024. Views and walks on beach are lovely, restaurants/coffee bars everywhere. Several top Op shops closeby! Winter rates so stay a few days!
Easy check in - not a whole lot of rules thrown at you. Lovely staff. Incredible location. Price is good value. They upgraded us which was lovely. Highly recommend. Thank you.
Love this hotel - has old fashion charm
Very run-down property with uncomfortably hard beds and sporadic food and beverage service.
It’s a heritage building and has a lovely view
Its style
Beautiful historical place in beautiful Devonport. Its age shows but room was clean staff friendly.
I liked the fact that I could get the ferry from the CBD and everything within Devonport is within walking distance. The hotel is comfortable and has a lovely character.
They were excellent with late arrival after a hold up on our end. Real milk would be heaps better.
Very disappointing stay
The hotel is badly in need of a total makeover we got upgraded to a suite as they don’t do breakfast anymore the suite is furnished in a mish mash of very old tired furniture there were plastic flowers in the room!! The TV didn’t work and because we only discovered this late in the evening there was nobody to contact . Tried to use an iron and it was unusable due to the dirt on it the shower turned suddenly cold after a number of minutes all in all a disappointing stay however the staff were very helpful but management need to look at the accommodation they are providing particularly as after 5 weeks in New Zealand it was our last night and the most expensive !!
The hotel has a spectacular location right by ferry terminal. The rooms were large and had high ceilings with water view. The reception closes at 8pm and we felt a bit lonely in the hotel. Able to swim right off the beach by hotel. Wonderful. Best local restaurants were French Cafe and Signal Hill. About 45 minutes to airport.
Great location and many period features. But, very dated in areas tho, including heavy white paint on light fittings, terrible cheap bathroom ware and v heavy windows that were only able to be propped open by tiny metal rods, one roll loo paper for entire stay...cheap flimsy duvet, bottles of water with labels ripped off them, springs in bed coming thru but at least comfortable...you get the picture, also fan no portable air con, for the price we paid ($300 for one night) surely you can afford to give us a portable aircon unit. The area outside bar downstairs that closed v early and seemed to have an identity crisis full of braying local boomers - area around it dirty and butts etc, made up for by terrific view and location. Room had the most lovely linen chairs tho, pair of binocular would have been nice touch, so overall - a real hit and miss affair. Perhaps also arrange something for on-street parking for guests, maybe rent a carpark somewhere after hours or suggest New World carpark etc, was cruise ship season and no parks anywhere, had to risk leaving it in a 120 min park.
Well situated in a great village
Is a nice character old hotel, could do with some TLC and room service but a pleasant place to stay and was very convenient for our purpose.
Great place to explore Auckland
Great holiday. The Esplanade is perfectly placed to catch the ferry downtown and Devonport is lovely with interesting shops and great beaches.
Average stay, room could do with a lot of r&m, old building with character. Clean enough but a lot of wear and tear. The location is excellent to get around
From Check-In to Check-out the staff where friendly and helpful.
The location is great - right near the water in Devonport. I got a free park right outside. While the room wasn’t fancy and wouldn’t be for everyone, it was actually pretty cool that its an older building and still has that character. The room was dark, quiet and the bed was comfortable. For the price (which was very reasonable), I was happy and would stay here again.
Historic gem on the waterfront. Many thanks for the stay.
Clean and perfect spot
Stunning views, close to transport, city, Waiheke, excellent beaches. Lovely cotton sheets, great food, bar and entertainment.
Well appointed and very well laid out
Comfortable stay
The hotel was convenient and comfortable, it was a little dated but functional. I did not use the restaurant however it was good to know that there was one on site. I was a little disappointed that the check-in lady did not give me correct information regarding the ferry sailings, but it didn't ruin the trip. I was surprised how quiet it was in the room.
Excellent location close to Devo and the ferry. Nice vibe in the place.
I thought great...let's stay at a pub north of Auckland. The villiage around the hotel is great. The room was ok for a night, but there is no atmosphere, no restaurant, no breakfast....it's sad, nice place but just was a bit dead
Handy to ferry and bus. Property old but kept in nice condition.
Nice and handy to everything. Nice staff. Clean and tidy.
A beautiful hotel with amazing view over the harbour and so convenient to everything. I loved this place.!!
Great property in excellent location
Exceptional service.
The building and position is beautiful - the condition of the property is dilapidated and the bed belongs in the tip. Mattress old and bed base floppy. Also the linen was Kmart quality. We supposedly got an upgrade because they couldn't serve breakfast - heaven only knows what we were upgraded from. No parking - guests are expected to go and move their cars unless they pay public parking fees. Staff were friendly (especially bar staff) and position in Devonport really lovely.
Massive room, lovely high ceilings. There had obviously been a water leak somewhere as there was a musty carpet smell going on. But that happens in amazing old buildings with so much heritage. Room was massive, shower pressure was fantastic. Staff were friendly.
Fabulous position with fab views
Good location, and our room was nice and quiet.
Perfect location. Quiet and picturesque.
Historic
It was a bit run down cobwebs and some damp patches. but worse of all there was no table to plug the kettle in so had to sit on floor then went on the hunt for the cups and found them in the tv cupboard
Very friendly staff and an excellent place to stay. If I have to visit Auckland, I will chose only this place
Makes the most of its historical status - its been an icon on the Devonport waterfront for a long time. Facilities good but a little tired. Barman/concierge was helpful and friendly.
The staff were friendly. The room was clean. The entrance and foyer definitely needs a face lift.
Excellent location, easy access to transport, the beaches and the village.
The location was excellent..we were upgraded to a bigger room and the views where amazing..
Great location
Worse hotel we have ever stayed in damp ,cold and dirty was supposed to stay 4 nights but only lasted 1 . Definitely not worth $294 a night Have stayed in better backpackers than this hotel . Have to give at 1 star because im not able to give it none
lovely place but facilities a bit dated
Weird
The price and the location 👍
Worst place we have ever stayed at in New Zealand Staff we ok but property was very run down and dirty
Really lovely old place in Beautiful setting
Overall a good option to stay
Last minute booking , just grabbed their lowest cost room. Room was big and because its a classic old building the roof was nice and high. really cosy really quiet. A bit olde fashioned but I enjoyed it
fantastic position
This property should not be on the books - it is terrible. Torn curtains, windows cant close, overpainting on curtains and walls, cracks in walls, very dirty and dusty under bed, room does not have air con, room light did not work........ect ect ect DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!
Room in poor condition, curtains torn & one hanging off the railings.. Had to move beds around to put in plugs which had been disconnected.
If expect in its day it was a magnificent hotel it had the old charm but the room we had was very run down
Lovely old hotel with large comfortable bed. Close to ferry and cafes.
Close to everything, very clean and tidy. Lovely place to stay.
The minute we open the door to the bedroom, a strong smell of mould blasted at us, mould on the walls, ripped curtains, dirty cups, dirty stains on duvet and then the wall leaked from rain soaking our shoes and clothes, we were in the penthouse as well, we all felt quite unwell the next day, we went ti talk to someone about it to find office closed and a basket with a note saying, leave your keys here, so upsetting 😡, could be amazing, we paid $258.00 for a night from hell. DONT STAY HERE !
Old fashioned charm. Spacious rooms and close to all amenities
Waterside hotel
Welcoming … comfortable .. very clean … power junction beside bed didn’t work … lovely heritage feel & beautiful harbour outlook… no meals or breakfast available but numerous cafes & restaurants nearby…
It was dirty, run down and uncomfortable. We asked for a refund to leave but they declined.
Excellent location and a nice property.
Very pretty and light and airy. Close to everything you need
Run down, lots of ants everywhere. Seemed more like a backpackers
Cat or dog hair all over the carpet, bed, sheets ect ants galore and when. We first arrived there was a sewage leak and it smelt so bad
Ok
I could not make this trip due Covid level 4 restrictions. I did communicate this via email after they contacted me with the hotel but got no response. The still charged me.
The location of the hotel is great - right on the water's edge, it was quite at night.
A quaint hotel in a fabulous location. In need of a little TLC but otherwise a thoroughly enjoyable stay. Staff were friendly and helpful and room was cosy and clean with a comfortable bed. We had dinner in the restaurant and breakfast in the tea room. We would definitely stay here again.
Amazing character and view. Great value. Really pleased with the breakfast thrown in as well. Loved our stay.
Lovely old hotel, still had the features of the original building, it was warm comfortable and a great price - would happily stay again
The Staff ladies where efficient and very friendly Loved the atmosphere, eating a very nice meal at he fire place . Whilst the old guys were having their happy hour at the bar. Good old fashioned cosy and relaxed atmosphere You don't see that often own modern hotels. Love the way the old building was made to function in modern times. Not so easy and you can waste a lot of money. With the great location too, was nice to go for walk-about. Keep up the Good work ! Jon & Ariane from Perth WA
Good location. Room was tired, paint peeling off, etc.
Clean
The hotel has charm and character, having been built in Edwardian England. The restaurant, cafe and bar were well presented, but all in all, the hotel needs a "bit of a do up". It has that "tired look" about it. In addition, there was an annoying "hummmh", in the room, which sounded like a fan or something emanating from the roof area, perhaps serving the kitchen?? It lasted all night, which made sleeping for myself and my wife very difficult, and was annoying to say the least. An OK Hotel for a short stay, but not for any longer.
Location
We had an amazing birthday weekend at this hotel. Location is perfect and staff was very friendly.
