Kim and her staff were great. Kim provided excellent local information and was a great resource.
We spent a very comfortable night in a converted railway carriage which was quirky and a lot of fun. The carriage had pretty much everything you could require including a claw foot bath and a fabulous view of the distant snow covered mountains. Breakfast was provided and was served in the main building. A couple of things do need attention though, firstly the Wi-Fi signal which was too weak to function efficiently and secondly there was a broken window pane above the bed.
Over-priced for what you get. Very basic. You should probably bring your own food. Choices are very limited.
Friendly and kind staff.
Beautifully restored building with interesting and unique furnishings. View is lovely, huge grounds with delightful antiques, art and gardens. Super friendly staff. Loved the library and breakfast. Bed and bedding perfect, small but hot and well pressured shower. Thoughtful design throughout and really delicious food.
Loved the unique vibe and Kim was gracious and helpful!
Lovely property. Unique building, an old convent. Excellent breakfast. Remodeled bathrooms. Staff very helpful with ideas for tours and dining.
We stayed in a converted rail car located on the other end of the property from the main house. It was charming but think the rooms in main house would be more comfortable.
Really lovely B&B
Wonderful staff, lovely historic building, and great breakfast.
Truly magical historic building on a lovely (and quirky) property. Very friendly and helpful staff. Fantastic breakfast. Highly recommend as a jumping off point for Fiordland.
A great stay and a fantastic staff!
Super great people and delightful environment
Great stay.
Isla on reception was ultra helpful, the property was very unique but lovely. Special additions were complimentary refreshments in the library, beautiful gardens and handy laundry facility. Walking distance to restaurants was about fifteen minutes
Staff was friendly and room was quiet
Very quaint property with unique rooms and nostalgic vibe. It felt like we were in a period mystery show! Breakfast was hearty and good, and the staff are wonderful. I forgot my credit card and they quickly texted me to come back and pick it up. Overall a wonderful stay that we would gladly repeat if we came back to Te Anau.
Te Anau lodge
Character, character, character. This converted convent was terrific. Large library with balcony down the hall. Great grounds with an old railroad car that could be rented as a room. Terrific hostess, Kim. Very good value. Close enough to town center to walk to dinner.
The owner and staff were very friendly and accomodating. The breakfast was excellent and they even went our of the way to cook breakfast when we were late on oyr last day of the stay. The free laundry was definitely appreciated.
Extremely helpful and friendly, the manager was full of great advice and arranged a seaplane flight over the Doubtful Sound - unforgettable. A lovely, quirky and laid back place to stay. Full of character and fun, and some interesting/delightful room options topped with a fabulous breakfast. We’ll definitely be back and will try to get the railway carriage!
Beautiful old, cleverly renovated building bought alive to accommodate travelers from all walks of life. Excellent and friendly reception and ongoing communication. Just a lovely experience and we would definitely stay here again
The history of the Lodge as a convent is very apparent and celebrated. The host Kym is so helpful and was able to book our excursions and dining with ease. The walls are very thin and not sound proof so mind what you do: the neighboring room can hear!
Loved everything about this place — Kim and Donna are exceptional hosts, the room was both charming, comfortable and had modern amenities. Breakfast was great. Especially liked the dumb waiter for luggage and the ping pong table out back! Highly recommend.
Loved it all!
A unique place to stay so much charm and character definitely loved The Belfry room best views. Kim is an amazing host and she knows the best hikes in the area. It's such a good idea to stay in Te Anau before Milford as it's about half way. We loved our stay and they have the best Anzac biccies in the world.
Main part was not open, but they left food in the fridge for breakfast.
This is an extraordinary property to book. Kim, our host is just wonderful. We were treated like values friends who came home after a long time away from home. Breakfast is absolutely stunning, we did not want to leave the table because we had such great conversations with other guest and Kim and staff. Would not stay anywhere else!!
Great host.
Such a gorgeous atmosphere staying in this old convent. We were welcomed warmly and with cake by our lovely host Kim. It was a delightful experience.
We stayed in the train car and it was a magical experience. The host was very pleasant and made sure all of our needs were met.
This was a highlight of our trip! The property was very interesting and had a lovely setup - a true bed and breakfast. Our host was fantastic, and she provided what was easily the best B&B breakfast I’ve ever had. Our room was clean and felt cozy. I would gladly stay here again. Just an FYI this is a converted convent so there are some catholic symbols and pieces in some places to respect the history, but it’s not overly done in my opinion.
A wonderful historical site, and we will stay longer next time. Thank you, Kym, for your care and service!
Te Anau is a stopover to Milford Sound for one night B&B. Lodge is a historic place used to be a nun’s convent. Place is well kept but do keep your noise level low and the floor board creaks. Township is less than 10min drive but not many dining options on Mondays.
A beautiful lodge with the most wonderful host
We truly enjoyed our stay at Te Anau Lodge primarily because the manager, Kim who is such a wonderful host. Upon our arrival, Kim great suggestions for us on good restaurants for lunch, activities in town like walking around lakes and scenery movies in Te Anau cinema. She reserved tables in RedCliff Cafe for lodge guests so we were able to had dinner at this famous local restaurant in the evening. In order for us to wonderful experience in Milford sound, she helped us to change our Milford sound cruise booking from afternoon to morning on so that we were able to enjoy peaceful scenery in Milford sound in the morning and hike several beautiful trails in the afternoon on the way back to Te Anau. Since we need to leave the lodge 6 am to catch 8:45 am cruise in Milford Sound, Kim packed breakfast for us the night before. She made us feel so welcome and so cared, we feel like we were staying a close friend’s house. We stayed in the Bishop Retreat the first night and Fiordland Carriage (train) the second night. We enjoyed both accommodations which provided us “back-to-history” experience. We also enjoyed delicious breakfast in the classic dinning room. The library in the lodge provides complimentary drinks and snacks and an opportunity to meet and chat with other guests. We highly recommend the lodge.

Lovely place to stay
Kim, the manager, went out of her way to make us feel welcome and comfortable. She was outstanding.
Beautiful BnB. Lovely gardens, comfy bed, very obliging host. Nice views and very clean.
Loved the hotel, the grounds, the hospitality. Kym is the best! She made us feel very welcome!
The library was the common area and it provided an area for stimulating conversion amongst the guests
The most charming old cottage. They really thought of everything to keep you comfortable. Very generous breakfast items. Thanks for a great stay!
Very comfortable and well equiped. Good value for money.
Beautiful and very unique lodge Kim the property is very kind and helpful We highly recommend this property
Kim was amazing and so accommodating! The room was so clean and tidy. The property was unique and well maintained. Loved the complimentary snacks and drinks and the hot breakfast was a perfect way to start the day. would highly recommend.
Sleeping in an old wagon...
We stayed in a railway car (about 35 feet long) and had the whole car to ourselves. We loved it! It was perfect for our needs. We were able to store our food for meals on our own. The included breakfast was substantial. It was a buffet and also made to order. The hostess was very friendly and offered me a coat when she thought that I would be cold on a cruise on the sound. That's going well beyond the norm. Afternoon tea is also offered in a cosy room with a view of the property. PLEASE NOTE - the steps up are a steep and NOT the best for anyone with mobility issues. They have lots of other nice and suitable rooms if you don't want the steps up. We would go back in a flash if returning to the South island and highly recommend this property.
Very special spot 💜
Extremely charming and clean. Loved it!
A fun, quirky place! The staff could not have been nicer! Our little house was roomy and clean. Very old and full of antiques and that made it interesting. Everything worked and the beds were comfy. I would stay again if in the area.
We stayed in the railway carriage. Eccentric, bonkers and real good fun! Make a meal in and enjoy being in a railway carriage.
More of a B&B, very homely, helpful staff. However, the bedroom did not have any space to sit. The only way to spend time in the lodge was to go to the (very nice) library room. Also, there was little space to put toiletries in the (very clean) bathroom.
We stayed at what was called the Homestead. A complete house! Te Anau Lodge has different accommodations on the property- it was once a convent. Now converted to a unique B&B. Fun experience!!
A wonderful place to stay, comfortable, excellent service and a unique experience. Lovely food, surroundings and dog friendly. We highly recommend and will definitely stay again.
A great place to stay
de heel vriendelijke ontvangst en de hele entourage
What a great spot to stay in Te Anau. Kym and the staff were very helpful with booking and recommendations, breakfast was great, and the common areas and rooms were top notch. We stayed in the Bishops retreat. We walked into town, about 15 minutes or so, flat walk through quiet neighbourhoods. We would definitely stay again.
What a gem! Beautiful grounds, common areas and rooms. Lots of character in this former convent. Breakfast was great. Kym was so accommodating and helpful with restaurant suggestions. We stayed at another hotel our first two nights in Te Anu but wished we had been here all 3 nights we were in town
Our host Kym made this stay a real treat.
Amazing place. Great host kym. We had a lovely time
Wonderful property worthy of its outstanding rating. Charming quaint building with numerous interesting and lovely touches on beautiful spacious grounds. The rooms were spotless and very comfortable, and the staff provided wonderful hospitality and excellent breakfasts in a very social atmosphere.....I could go on and on about how much we loved our three days there. This has my highest recommendation, 10 on a scale of 1-10.
We enjoyed the wood stove in the homestead
Interesting place to stay. Great host with helpful suggestions. Clean and welcoming.
Enjoyed our "quirky" stay in this renovated convent B&B. Stayed in the Bishops cottage located outside of the actual building. Super safe and quiet, with parking right outside of our room. Our hostess was amazing and nothing was too much trouble and the breakfast room was lovely with a great choice of foods on offer. Thank you for an amazing stay.
It’s a new place. The views from the rooms are wonderful. About 15 minute walk into town.
This place has a really unique vibe that is really charming and hospitable. It's hard to define, but let me try: there are free homemade chocolates at check-in; free drinks (not just tea and coffee, but even soft drinks or a beer) and free homemade cakes on offer in the library/common room. The breakfast was very nice - it even included crumpets one day! The staff were friendly and helpful, giving us great advice on our activities for the following day. They upgraded our room because "this one's nicer" and I guess was empty at the time. The room didn't have a TV, but that fitted the ambience really nicely (the common room had a TV - also a gramophone, musical instruments, and a pretty extensive library). I give this place two thumbs up: it was the best place we stayed at on the South Island! If you're planning a trip out to Milford Sound, this is a great place to stay before and after!
Very nice and well maintained property. Good breakfast. Just be prepared for a bit of a hike to the town center.
Quirky property preserving old school charm. Nice area with wonderful staff. Would've liked a bit less clutter in the Homestead but other than that, it was great.
We are so glad we discovered the Te Anau Lodge! It was the perfect spot to break up the drive back to Queenstown from the Milford Sound. Kym gave us a fabulous welcome when we arrived and kindly showed us the laundry guests have access to as well as a lovely gathering room where snacks and complimentary drinks are served (a much more personal experience than your standard hotel!). The property is an incredible conversion of a convent with lots of character - the confessional has been turned into a a dumb-waiter to bring up the luggage! After a delicious breakfast included in our fee to stay, we were refreshed for our drive back to Queenstown. Our stay at the Te Anau Lodge and dinner in town at the Redcliff Restaurant was truly a highlight of our trip!
Relaxing, comfortable and quiet
Very nice old B&B. Relaxing, clean and comfortable. Gracious host. The library upstairs is a nice place to socialize and relax. About 15 minute walk to shops and restaurants.
Comfortable room with large common area in which to interact with other guests. Breakfast was great.
Fabulous service and charming place
Kym is an excellent hostess and made us feel at home from the minute we arrived. We really loved the upstairs sitting room (all decor super and attention to detail impressive) where we met some lovely Germans. As we arrived late and hadn’t had dinner Kym kindly shared some of her feast with us. This will be my go to place when in town.
Cool history, comfy lodging.
Loved everything about this property -- its history, its diverse lodging options, and its staff. All of them were committed to seeing that we had a great time and were getting everything we needed. Mararoa Homestead property was delightful and perfect for our larger group.
Quirky ✅ loved the fact that it was an authentic 1912 Fiordland railway carriage with original features. The owners clearly spent a great deal of attention to present the original details and features It is fabulous to view but not stay in as it felt musty, dirty and tired looking - duvet cover seams split - Whicker chair unsafe to sit on and soft furnishings looked dirty, original toilet seat no lid…. Difficult to balance visual aesthetics with modern functionality of a guest room which primarily is its function. Sadly we felt this is a museum piece more than guest accommodation. After travelling around NZ for days needed more comfort and cleanliness plus excellent bathroom facilities. Overall quirky, not clean poor value for money
Fantastic place to stay! Staff are wonderful, breakfast was exquisite, and it’s a fun place. You can stay in a former convent, or in the “bishop’s retreat” or even in an old rail car!
A unique property being a converted convent. We were the only ones staying that night so it was certainly very quiet. The stay was one night prior to an overnight cruise. Breakfast was good.
Mark is a fantastic host looking after our every need and full of good information for the region. Great breakfast. Would easily stay here again. It’s unique and fun.
greta location, fun host and great history about the property
Great place to stay
Super friendly welcome and always available and ready to help. It’s a unique place with the big house where you can have your own room, a house that sleeps 6, a train carriage that sleeps 2 and soon a covered carousel. The lawn where you can kick a ball or play frisbee golf is large and spacious. Definitely a place to come back to when you are in Te Anau.
Brilliant, quirky hotel. More of the more memorable places we’ve stayed it. Great hosts, lovely breakfast and the railcard room was a fabulous place to spend a few nights
Fabulous! Very accommodating team running the Lodge and it is charming place to stay. Loved it.
It's a converted house, so the bathrooms are small and there's no soundproofing between rooms. The housekeeper tried very hard to help.
The homestead is a stunning old house with modern conveniences. It’s clean, full of character & warm. The real bonus was something we didn’t notice while we were there - how peaceful it was. Nice & secluded & just relaxing. A big thanks to the Lodge manager Suzy.
Very charming and unique!
We absolutely loved our stay here. The people working there were super nice & friendly. They gave outstanding tips for things to do in the area and even offered to call for reservations for us. The hotel is a super charming old convent with a lot of character.
Stayed in the train carriage which was quaint, bit of yester year style..... Unfortunately the property lacked the polish expected, shower nozel tied on with string, very uncomfortable bed, hot water took ages to come through, very cramped with oddities too much as there was nowhere functional to place ourbags. Staff were wonderful and there was really nice inclusions of plenty of toiletries and breakfast items - that was much btter thanexpected. Really dissapointed that the laundry facilities that were advertised were non existent.
Mixed review
First the good: - great host, friendly, helpful, informative - great location - quirky building, old convent - large beautiful grounds - complimentary tea/coffee/wine/bear in the library Now for the bad: - tiny room with no space for suitcases - absolutely no sound proofing, we could hear all the conversations from the front desk and elsewhere; they actually provide earplugs in the rooms so they know it's an issue so go in at your own risk - tiny bathroom - if you open the shower door, there is no room to move around at all, my husband ended up hitting his elbow really hard - not the most comfortable bed, overall need improvements
Not what we expected
We stayed in the Railway Carriage. It was very windy and noisy which kept us awake. We were disappointed not to have breakfast in the main hotel, we had it in the carriage where there were no cereal bowls for our use.
Loved the history of the property and the naming of all the rooms to honour that history. There was nothing I didn’t dislike. A great place to stay.
The host and property was above any of our expectations. Beautifully run and such a great experience. Highly recommend you stay here if you can.
A Blessing.
This I was one of our favorite stays during our 3 week trip It is uniquely charming, the food was excellent, including the Basque dinner, and the host was very accommodating. We met wonderfully interesting people over the dinner and the history of the building made for great conversation
Amazing! Loved the warm and unique atmosphere! Mark really made our stay wonderful! The library really Is wonderful; we loved the gathering spot and formed friendships with other guests
Unique place to stay, beautiful grounds, the host was less than friendly and didn’t bother to show us any of the bnb amenities.
Book the train for something different.
This stay was a unique surprise. They gave us an option of staying in the train car. She wasn’t sure we would like it so we took a look at it and fell in love. It was our most unusual stay ever! This is something we will remember for years.
This place is special!
Unique and special - we had a whole house with three bedrooms! Lots of breakfast supplies there for us in the full kitchen. Loved checking out the main building too. Wish we had been able to stay more than one night.
Charming is an understatement! Clever! Attention to details in every way, including a confessional, a corner full of penance alternatives (rosary to hairshirt)...and a habit in the closet! Two guests showed up at breakfast donning habits! Breakfast was delicious. Room was cute with a nice view.
What a beautiful spot. I highly recommend this B&B to everyone wanting to visit. Lovely spot and great friendliness.
Quaint cottage with so much character
Our house was charming, cosy and warm. Mark ( the manager) went out of his way to book us into activities while we were staying Te Anau despite arriving quite late. He was helpful, friendly and welcoming. The convent is located quite close to the main part of town.
Very unique setting. Excellent staff. An experience we will never forget
Great spot! We had reserved a three night stay, but added a night and would have stayed longer if we hadn’t had such a tight schedule. There is so much to see and do in Fiordland and the beauty is unparalleled. The lodge is in a perfect location and had great amenities! Breakfast was excellent. Staff were brilliant. Tea in the afternoon was a welcome perk.
Great stay!
The lodge is a unique place - very pretty and the room we stayed in was large and comfortable. Mark the host and concierge is wonderful. The breakfast is more than enough with eggs sausage toast- the works! Yes, there may be a small thing here or there that is a little inconvenient but Mark more than makes up for it with his superior hospitality! I would definitely stay again!
Loved the convent history and theme. Mark, the host, was very helpful. Wish we could have stayed longer.
A personal touch in every way. Beautiful location and wonderful old building.

What a fun experience sleeping in a train carriage!
