they're renovating and didnt say anything till i booked it. Then after i booked , sent and email saying its nonrefundable. lovely.
Hotel Derek is being closed down. And yet it is somehow still available to reserve? No amenities are available, there were hardly any workers, everything was dirty, it smelled so bad, there was a bandaid in the refrigerator, the bathtub would not drain. Everything was in terrible condition and it should not be available to guests.
This property was out dated. The pictures did not represent the property. The pillows were hard and flat, the bed was hard. No stop or body wash. No black out curtains. Fridge in room didn't work. No amenities available, but they didn't email until it was too late to cancel. This was NOT a 4 star experience.
Hotel is about to shut down.
Hotel is about to shut down. In its last days and it was not good.
It is in such bad shape DO NOT STAY. Staff was so friendly but the place needs closed down! So MOLDY I got sick and no hot water unless you wait 15 minutes
Such a very nice hotel that needs renovation and take out the tubs. Looks 80 retro and way too dark in rooms and hallways. Exterior is very nice. Has plumbing issues also. No staff on duty.
I don’t have anything good to say aside from they need to be closed until they fully renovate.
It was in the perfect location. Clean facility but pillows could have been more comfortable.
Worst stay ever
Horrible, worst experience ever for a supposed luxury hotel, extremely upset with what I was charged I could gave stayed at a Holiday and had better room service, shower, toilet, elevator waa horrible and old.
Me and my went to have some alone time at the bar and pool which neither was available per the manager they have informed you guys of the amenities not being available for what i oaid i could have went somewhere where i get it all. Parking only had valet there wasnt any other option due to them closing in two weeks smh
Didn’t like anything but the valet people, hotel amenities all closed. Smelled like sewer inside hotel.
Everything was shut down and I was told the balcony room I had prepaid was unavailable. they did not credit me anything for the room downgrade
The staff were friendly, but what i didn't like was no one told us due to them renovating at the end of the month none of the amenities weren't available, which left us scrambling to find somewhere to eat breakfast. It was no pool or fitness center to decompress at the beginning or end of each day. Maybe once the renovations are done it will be a much better place to visit
There was no water (something about the city), the pool was closed (no notice while reserving). The great pictures of a lively bar/restaurant where fake (the bar/restaurant) was closed. Overall, the stay was OK, but far below what they promised and far below what one would expect for two hundred dollars per night.
DO NOT STAY HERE! We missed a flight at IAH and booked Hotel Derek for the night The rate was $$$ parking. Upon arrival the parking garage was filthy and seemed very unsafe so we chose valet park. We also noticed that several guest seemed to be there on an hourly rate! When we entered the hotel a strong smell of gas or something was awful. We pre paid through Expedia or I would have demanded a refund. The room was filthy… dead roaches, non working bathroom door and just not clean. I know this hotel has been bought out, but they should close until the renovations are complete instead of advertising as a 3 star boutique hotel
DO NOT BOOK THIS HOTEL PEOPLE. If you are out of towners and dont kno Im telling you now this property has went down tremendously. The area is great but the hotel is a BIG NO. The pictures shown are 15 plus years ago with the same dirty nasty furniture. The room furniture is torn up and worn down. I live here and didn't kno until after booking and checking in how poorly this hotel has went down and also closing down soon. I was able to get a refund rite away and book else where.
The surrounding area is not the best
The hotel needs to have clean sheets and the bathroom needs to be more clean
the hotel was quite for the most part. The garage is 30$ per night which is high for parking. But since you pay 30 dollars you would think they would allow you to park on a lower level they blocked off floors 1-5 for valet … secondly once you make it to floor 6 it’s no lights on that level it’s dark which is also a hazard. not to mention trash and wrappers all in the garage. incidentals are 100 per night which is a little insane yes it’s returned if the room is good condition but still. Third the staff was friendly I was unaware of the 100 per night incidental and the receptionist at check in helped guide me that. overall it’s cheaper and nicer places to stay it was experience given the history but I don’t suggest driving your own vehicle or parking there. plus they do have a security guard driving but they was on they phone there entire time.
Not recommended , worst experience i have, parking is expensive
Dirty
6/10 Stars
I booked the room last minute on Hotels.com since I was only in town 2 days and needed something quick and convenient at 1am thats close to a family member’s house. Pros: Location next to CVS, Galleria Mall, plenty of restaurants and stores. Clean/spacious rooms, hallways, lobby. Quiet. Price. Cons: 24/7 Parking garage Security Guard but….the garage is littered with trash!! No lights, pitch black. $30/day Self Park $40 Valet. If it wasn’t for security I would have left the same day. Customer service is hit or miss. For me, it was horrible upon arrival and excellent at departure. The agent as I was leaving definitely made me feel a little better about my stay.
Tv didn't work and shower head leaking other than that it was ok.
Terrible hotel. No service. No housekeeping, no restaurant and overpriced parking.
Was informed on check in that all amenities like gym, bar, restaurant are all closed indefinitely.
Good
Made reservation and when we got there hotel was closed.
Not as polished as it used to be but grateful for the refuge post storm. The track holding the window curtain was literally falling from the ceiling. Informed the front desk staff multiple times but maintenance never came to see about the issue.
Very poor hotel from outside to interior. Dirty room and rusty tub. Would like a refund
The room was not clean. Outdated.
Nothing was good
They double charged me for another room that I didn’t stay in and didn’t tell me anything about it. They are investigating it but I am going to dispute the charge because they had no right.
Worst hotel I’ve been too flooded toilets and baths very nasty the service front desk is beyond horrible
No shower bench in handicap accessible room!
I called the Hotel Derek one month ahead of time and again 2 weeks ahead of time. Each time, i was assured that there would be a shower bench available to shower my husband who has had a stroke. When we arrive on Friday, there was a tub with grab bars. My husband cannot stand safely for a shower. I called ahead so that i could pack a tub bench if needed. An honest answer telling me that no shower bench was available could have saved a lot of trouble. I don't know if anyone enjoys not being able to shower with the heat in June in Houston, Texas!!!!!!! On a positive note, the breakfast was delicious!
My room had a lot of nets and mosquitoes. I woke up with bite marks all over my arms and legs.
Hotel room was not well kept, had to switch rooms 4 times because the ac was not working. Elevators trap us for a couple a minutes.
Great stay! View from my king suite was beautiful. Bed was so comfortable
Went and a quick one day business trip but took my family and it was okay.. we were comfortable but it is a bit dated. Great communication and loved the front desk. Overall stay was good.
They dont service the rooms and say you have to request that 24 hours before and when you do, they dont send anyone. The food options for breakfast are limited to one option and its a dirty run down restaurant. I will never stay there again.
The Staff was amazing. The cleanliness of the hotel was horrible. The toilet was nasty, the sofas in the lobby were old and dirty, dirty towels, and tub.
Great location!
We had no towels in the room upon arrival floor was not clean and bedding was unclean
It was a 5 Star
Great vibes great service!!
Never again will I stay here
House keeper never came and clean our room. Never was given any face towel for the entire stay. I told front desk they said they ran out. I still haven’t received any new towels the following day either.
It was amazing
Very dated. Not kept up.
The property seems old
Poor service the hotel is not and looks like it’s not being taken care of due to it supposed to close next month needs a full remodel my suite was terrible pictures are not the same once u get there I wouldn’t stay there again good people but I think they don’t care due to the place closing
Had a dirty towel at the top of the shower
do not stay here
False advertisement! The pictures make this hotel look a lot nicer & bigger than it actually was. I was charged $100 per night for incidentals, there’s no microwave in the rooms and no where on the property! There isn’t complimentary breakfast, the shower & toilet water were yellow, my refrigerator in the room and safe didn’t work, & the bathroom door barely closed. Housekeeping never came to our room for 3 days & the pool water was so green, it couldn’t even see through it, plus the rooms were FREEZING, no matter the temperature
Did not feel safe, room needs to be redone, felt like I was in the 90s. Didn’t stay all night, got another room at a nicer place. Thank you but no thank you
Tons of hidden fees. Horrible cleaning. Horrible experience, unengaged staff.
Not what we expected
This hotel came highly recommended with good reviews, but really started to question its accuracy. Smelly interior, dirty room, refrigerator did not work, many ice machines on many floors out of service, green colored pool. Other than that all staff we encountered where very friendly, helpful and accommodating.
This was the worst hotel experience of my life. The hotel is closing and you can tell. It was gross, and unclean, no extra towels and just terrible room. Holes in the wall just all bad I really would like my money back I can’t believe it
This hotel is simply run down. It is clear that simple routine maintenance has been neglected. Everything feels really out of date. The restaurant is mediocre at best. Hands down the worst pillows I have ever slept on in any hotel, period. They only good thing about this hotel was it’s proximity to the River Oaks District for shopping and dining. Otherwise, I would not recommend this hotel.
Don’t Do It!!!
The stay overall was horrible. As soon as I entered the building, it felt as is no one cared. The front desk person was not rude, but not welcoming. There were no towels in the room, so we called the front desk for hours trying to obtain towels, no answer all night. The room needed to be upgraded/remodeled. The lobby and hallways smelled like weed. This was not an good experience at all. I will never stay again and will advise anyone I know not to stay as well. This hotel should not be listed as a 4-star. It should be listed as at best a 2-star with a warning. Very disappointing stay.
Smells when you walk in the property
DO NOT BOOK! Filthy room and rude front desk staff and manager, plus we got charged $200 for zero consumption of incidentals, instead of $40 for Valet parking. I had stayed here when the hotel was new, this second stay was my worst hotel Nightmare. My room was 911 and literally a cry for help. It was dirty beyond acceptable, and I don’t mean just dirty from the last guest. Months and years of neglect and grime. The walls were gross, the mirror edges, the sink was cracked, the phone receiver was filthy, the light switches and there were bugs (like baby cockroaches)) on the bathroom ceiling that kept falling over the sink. Zero maintenance, rusty tub, shades were broken, couch in disarray and it was noisy from the street. I checked in around 10:30 PM after a long day of work and had a full day in the morning when I called the front desk to let them know, but had to go down myself and get a key to another room and move my stuff without help. In the AM when I was sharing my experience with the manager on the state of the room and offered to share photos he said I don’t need to see photos, there is a person behind you. I was in shock, no apology offered for any inconvenience and when I said is this the new norm? He said yes! After we checked out he over charged our card for incidentals! My absolute worst experience EVER anywhere in the world. ! I was so embarrassed with my colleagues as I recommended we stay here! THE WORST! They still have not refunded overcharged fees!
If I'm being honest about my stay at hotel Derek I find that it was average to below average. I've traveled to a lot of different five-star, four star, and three star hotels and I expected a lot more from this hotel based on the price. I was very let down as this was my mother's Day gift as a night away and a full night's rest and I really wanted to enjoy it. I found it to be very noisy. I tried to call the guest services line to ask for eating utensils and some extra towels. I was told to contact "in room dining" and the employee didn't even have the courtesy to transfer the call or offer to let them know. They just hung up. Next thing you know a hotel employee is knocking on my room door to deliver a toothbrush and toothpaste.... never got my eating utensils but I did get my towels. However in the morning the front desk person was great she was very personable and she was a really great host. The complimentary breakfast is really nice and the entire breakfast experience was really nice compared to everything else. But overall I did not enjoy my stay as much as I thought I would, unfortunately. The bathroom was really gross honestly The bedroom was okay but the floors were sticky. The wifi was terrible and the remote only had two buttons that worked. The parking was expensive and very limited. I expect better service for such an expensive hotel in a very affluent part of the city.
Great hotel for an event
Enjoyable stay. We were there for a conference. Nice conference facilities. We enjoyed the bar after our event but disappointed that snacks/food wasn't available on Friday or Saturday night after 10pm. We had a nice spacious room.
This property needs a makeover and the lady at the front desk has no customer service and she was rude when I checked out early
Hotel Derek was a hot property when it opened in the 90s. It's certainly in a great location, on Westheimer next to IH 610 and the Galleria. Valet parking was pricey ($40/night) but better that parking yourself ($30/night), but the valet service was quick (Don't bother trying to call; it's easier just to go downstairs and present your ticket. The decor is pure 90s, which means rather outdated. We had a balcony suite, which was nice enough and clean, but the "suite" just means a very long sofa (at least 9 feet) against the window and a cozy separate computer room with a sliding door to the balcony. The view is unimpressive, but who wants a view of a busy Houston business district? There is a coffee maker and a small fridge in the main room. The king bed was fairly comfortable, but the hotel's pillows are as thin and hard as any I've ever stept on. The bathroom was ok, except that the bathtub was very high for elderley guests. The problem is with staffing. We arrived after 8 pm, and only one employee was handling both parking and our luggage. When we finally got to our room and unpacked we went downstairs to get something to eat. The bar was busy, but we sat at a table and waited for service. The bartender was the only employee in evidence, and when moved to bar seats and asked for a menu we were told (a little after 9) that the cook had just left. Maybe you could get a hamburger or short order at other times of the day. Room service wasn't even a possibility.
Extremely bad customer service the entire stay. Long wait time at check in. Only one employee working and explanation given was because they are closing for renovations in approximately 2 months. In room dining never answered for orders tne entire stay. Guest services Rarely answered phones as well. Was told heat could not be turned on in room per request. Engineering department controls air and heat regulation.
Great hotel for the price
For the price you can’t go wrong , I was a little skeptical because the price was such a great deal ! Rooms are modern property well kept
The bed was comfortable and the AC worked very well. The room was mostly clean, except the AC vents, which were covered in dust. We arrived at 3:45 and were not allowed to check in until 4:00, which meant everyone else sitting in the lobby was also waiting. We all had to stand in a long, slow line in order to check in. I found the front desk reception people to be less than friendly and slightly snarky when asking a question over the course of our two day stay. I requested a late check out and was told all the late check outs had already been granted. My husband has some health issues and we needed a little more time to complete his health regimen. I was told I could pay for a late check out, or another day. In the end I was given and extra 30 minutes. We were checking out on a Monday morning. In my entire time there, I never once saw a housekeeping cart or housekeeper. It wasn't like they were ready to jump into our room upon our departure. I requested a handicapped accessible room. The bathtub had handicap bars at knee and thigh height. I've never seen that before. It was almost more dangerous trying to hold on so low than not having any bars to hold onto. The room itself was very run down. A big chip had been knocked out of the shelf that served as a dresser. The wallpaper was torn and wrinkled, the side table was broken, etc. It just wasn't the quality room I would expect for the price I paid. I will not stay at Hotel Derek again. I do not recommend.
Excessive fees and parking
$30 to $40 to park your car The Hotel is great but high service fees and parking price makes the Hotel Derek $100 more than advertised
Room was not clean, we found a dirty sock that was not ours in the bed sheets. They charge us a resort fee that includes breakfast but did not have anything that was gluten free as my wife has celiac. The front desk staff response was you should have checked that before booking the hotel. They should work towards having some gluten free options for people with celiac.
The staff was very rude and unhelpful. The room was dirty. Tubs old and not clean. Just an overall horrible experience
Nope… never again… not for that price
Terrible communication about check-in, terrible communication about self-parking, musty smell throughout property, hard pillows, outdated small bathrooms, toiletries not restocked…. Horrible stay
2 days in Houston
Quick business trip. Hotel was clean and pleasant. Loved the retro mid-century style. Within walking distance to Galleria and may restaurants. In house restaurant/bar has a good happy hour.
Overall everything was great
Cheap for a business trip. Good location
Outdated. Bathroom was not clean. Dark hairs in shower. Pillows were thin & hard. Bed sucked.
Great hotel . Value for what we paid .
Parking is outrageous there are a minute fees and other fees. Won’t be staying there again
Good experience
It was a good experience.
Nice hotel, showing a little wear in the rooms.
Stay was fine and i love staying here. Only this time, the room I was given was looking a bit old. The shower had caulking that was no longer stuck to the wall and separating. In the bedroom, the walls had stains near the window. Generally needs a makeover.
Great Staff!
Don't stay here!!!!
Horrible! The sink was hotter than the shower and I had to take cold baths. The self pay $30 parking is a SCAM!!! They don't tow your car, it's a tactic for more money. I had a horrible experience at what is supposed to be an "upscale 4 star hotel".
Hotels getting a little dated and less clean. Clear they haven't maintained or updated property in quite some time. Clientele has become sketchy. Not a great business travel spot and NOT family friendly.
Do not recommend and would never use again!
This hotel is overrated. No microwaves on property and we found gum under the bedside table. My husband did not like the limited breakfast, $23 fee but only used $10 worth and wanted to charge for a second plate. They also did not accommodate us for our honeymoon. For a hotel so expensive you would think they would have done better.
Definitely not a 4 star. Poorly maintained and noisy.
Dirty vents Maintenance knocked on door at 0600 for no reason "Wine cooler" slash refrigerator did not work and they kept saying they phoned engineering. When engineering came to put the bathroom door back on track they said they don't fix the fridges. Overpriced drinks at the bar & parking TV lost color Poor customer service Won't empty trash cans Won't change sheets, gave one customer some and said he has to do it himself. No vending machine Broken ice machine on our floor Thermostat wasn't working Not enough carts for transport
Perfect
Bed bugs. Rude management. Filthy hotel
The rooms are falling apart. The shower leaks water all day. The worst part was the restaurant and the staff there, I was there morning and night both terrible experiences with the service. Front desk and vallet were great.
Every time I come to Hotel Derek I always have a great time. Thank you to everyone you all are the best
20 or so years ago Hotel Derek opened as a chic boutique with a highly regarded restaurant and up-to-the-second decor. Guest rooms had all the latest amenities. Double Rs and Range Rovers were common in valet. It was a place to see and be seen. Fast forward... Hotel Derek is now a dilapidated, run down, dirty, zero-service shadow of its former self. My room was quiet and had great A/C, yes, but to call it a "suite" is ridiculous. It's just a larger guest room with nothing you'd expect in a suite. No wet area, no minibar, no separate sitting area, furniture scratched and dented well past its sell-by date, uncomfortable bed... OLD. And when I got to my room the bathroom was overrun with someone's suds from a bubble bath! NOT recommended anymore.
Biz trip at Hotel Derek
Clean lobby, quick check-in. Front desk very polite and efficient.
Rooms not as upgraded for the price being charged
This hotel looks nice and used to be really nice. It is tired and is in desperate need of a revamp. The staff was great but the hotel is a best western with a nice lobby. Kinda sad, like I'd like to take a sad nap there.
Loved the decor.
For the money that was paid, it was not worth it. The room was not in good condition. The bathroom door doesn’t shut, there was hair on one of the towels, oh and there wasn’t even enough towels.. They NEVER answered the phone when I called from the room. They don’t help with bags, was told “they don’t have that service” like what…? $40 to valet and you don’t help with bags..? The restaurant breakfast was terrible. Absolutely not worth the money. If I had to do it again, I would have went to the Double Tree and spend a third of what I did and had a better experience.
Wasn’t worth the price at all
Dirty no heat breakfast limited and I am contacting the Better Business Bureau on this hotel I am requesting a full refund
Hotel Derek is in need of serious upgrading! We had to change rooms 3 times to try and get a decent room. All rooms were old and smelled, the 3rd was the best that they had so we decided to stay! We didn’t want to have to try and get a refund from Expedia. Thumbs down on this property.
Needs a lot of work. Definitely not worth the hype. Okay for one night. Don’t get your hopes up.

The shower didn’t work, no hot water, I paid a deposit November 8 & here it is December 7th still no refund. The transaction shows pending. They all act like they don’t know what’s what ! They use to be upscale now they are 1/10 highly do NOT recommend
