We had a great stay at Toya Sun Palace. The resort provided a bus service that picked us up from Sapporo for free, saving some money, though unfortunately it took over an hour longer than scheduled. The resort is impressive with the glass-walled lobby overlooking the lake, though the onsen areas were a bit smaller than expected. The Japanese style room was basic but comfortable, and housekeeping makes up the tatami sleeping mats at night. The room has its own small bathroom and a view of the lake, though the view is better elsewhere on the resort. Breakfast and dinner were included. The buffet had a very good range of food in our opinion, for both dinner and breakfast, and the quality was good by typical buffet standards. The separate male and female onsens had a range of baths, including an outdoor one overlooking the lake. It could be very crowded in peak season. The water is 38-40 degrees, which feels very hot but you adjust to it. There is a very faint smell of chlorine (much less than a normal swimming pool), but no sulphur or other smells. There is a nightly fireworks show on the lake which was nice, Tahitian entertainment performances everyday, and wearing the yukata around the resort was also enjoyable. We made the mistake of only staying one night, which was too short and didn't leave time to see the water fun park or go to Nakajima Island on the lake. We would definitely consider staying at Toya Sun Palace again, though maybe not during crowded peak season.
Fantastic view from hotel lobby,my room and onsen. The quality of food is great. But the room condition is not so good.
Very satisfied
Nice lobby and public bath but room was terrible. Smoking Smell is all around a room. Airconditioner is not properly working.
The worst hotel experience ever!
It's a really nightmare for us. The room was full of unpleasant smell, no AC inside the room and the ceiling wall was full of stain. We tried to exchange to another room but the hotel manager told us the hotel was full. However, we checked here and it's obviously not full! Many tours stay here, the dinner buffet was fine but the place was burning, cant really stay there for more than 30mins. Will never come back to this hotel again!
Nice and grand lobby but terrible, old, smelly rooms specially the bathroom. Reception staff incompetent and rude. The onsen area is good. Dinner and breakfast food quality decent but nothing great.
Amazing view
Although the resort is rather old, the surrounding view is still amazing. We had a great time having dinner while watching sunset. The pool wave is another plus point for the kids.
Air-conditioning system needs a major overhaul!
The lobby was very posh and welcoming but I am afraid the rooms and air-conditioning system needs sprucing up. It was warm and stuffy in the rooms although we turned up the air-conditioning to the max - you wouldn't be able to feel it at all. The food was ok. We stayed at this hotel on our 2nd night at Lake Toya and could easily compare this hotel with the other resort we stayed at on our 1st night. The other resort was excellent in all aspects but unfortunately they did not have rooms for the second night and we opted for this one instead and we were disappointed. Service wise, there was nothing to complain about - they were polite and attended to queries well and they do have good amenities such as a big video arcade for the children and even a big table-tennis room for booking. They also have a big indoor swimming pool with slides. Pity that the rooms and air-conditioning failed them.
Beautiful lounge & onsen
The common areas are beautiful. The lounge was stunning and so was the view from the onset. The view from the room was great but the rooms are extremely dated. I took the western room, which was on a smoking floor. My clothes and hair reeked of smoke when I woke up. Meal times end really early and it felt like a huge cafeteria.
Relax and enjoy
We did enjoyed the 2 days with fireworks at night and felt very relax for the spa.
Splendid lake view, lack of human touch
This hotel has a splendid lake view from its hotel lobby and from its outdoor onsen. Scrumptious breakfast and dinner buffet with good variety of foods. The receptionist staff and the onsen cleaner lady are not that friendly. Its dining place is very particular on their breakfast and dinner hours, make sure you do not go enter the dining hall late, or you have to find your own way to get your food in the winter time. Their staff is too focus on standard operating procedure and lack of human touch. Avoid peak season if you do not want to queue for your food. The room is clean but it looks old now(I can imagine its grandeur in the past though.) Overall, I enjoy its lobby and outdoor onsen most.
We stayed one night in Jan. We are lucky being allocated the new renovated room. Thought the room is not big but comfortable and clean. This hotel is not closed to the train station or center, so they have a store at ground. One thing we are appreciated was they provided free shuttle bus from/to Sapporo and the hotel. Super convenient especially in winter season. Spa also very nice especially outdoor spa. But don’t expect too much on dinner buffet. Overall we are happy and enjoy to stay.
Nice view from outdoor Onsen
Hotel has nice decoration, staff is nice, bed is comfortable. I specially like the view from outdoor onsen. The evening performance is wonderful. I only didn’t like the buffet restaurant environment—too many people and too much noise.
Everything needs a refurbishment. Service standard seems shallow perhaps we were not Japanese. Buffet Chefs and waiters no smiles. We were told to leave asap after the give time. Could not relax and enjoy our meal.
Dirty Hotel.
Room was very very dirty not the same as shown on the web site .bed was uncomfortable a very lousy manage hotel with all the tour group dinning at the same time .pet dog are even allow in these hotel. nothing is good for the price you paid. please go else where if you want a quite place .
Lakeside View
Fantastic lobby and infinity ofuro (public bath) view of Lake Toya! Otherwise a typical large hotel catering to tour groups (enormous dining hall--food not bad for a buffet--and modest rooms--reserve the VIP room for unobstructed view of firework show from the balcony). Although there is a free shuttle bus leaving Sapporo in the morning (contact hotel to reserve a seat), alternative transport will need a little planning (and cost).
Too many tour groups, old hotel, rooms not maintained properly. The only plus point is the nice view and onsen.
excellent hotel
Very satisfied with the hot spring spa with an outdoor area offering a magnificient view out to the toya lake. Buffet dinner was excellent as well. But our twin bed room showed its age with its old furniture and bathroom.
The room is dated. Toilet is small and worn out. the tatami bed looks old. Staffs doesn't seem friendly. Carpark is not within the hotel compound but opposite in an open space. Only thing we like are the food spread for dinner and breakfast with nice view of Lake Toya. Theres also a pet area where you got to pay for a 10min play with either cats or dogs at the lobby.
Hotel with Beautiful view
Reception area and onsen was nice and clean but Guest room and equipment abit tired. Need an upgrade
Large hotel with a great onsen
Amazing view from your own room and great onsen with infinity pool. We visited during early May and the room was very stuffy. Staff said the system only operates to blow hot air out, and gave us a table fan and told us to open the full height window to vent. The latter solution wasn't possible as we have small children and our room was on the 10th floor. Dinner/breakfast buffet food quality was ok, but when it was full, be prepared to fight with 300 plus guests for food. Elevators were insufficient and give yourself more time to go anywhere. The fireworks show was nice though as you can watch it literally from your own room.
Good view of the Lake & Mountain
Public Bath overlooking the lake - beautiful sight. Good variety of food for the dinner and breakfast buffet.
Good service
Much appreciation for their service. My daughter left the camera charger in the room, they kindly delivery it to our next hotel stayed. Water world is great and fun. Breakfast is very good.
Terrible hotel
Hugely disappointed. Hotel is old, and there was a bad smell in the hallway of the guest rooms.!!! LOTS of people, especially at dinner. It was quite a hassle to find and get your food as you have to fight the crowd. Dinner food was cheap stuff, there was not much quality. Receptionist was efficient at check-in, but was very economical with her effort - she did not even give me some essential information personally, let alone make me feel welcome. I did not feel like I was in Japan as usually Japanese people treat their customers with great hospitality. This is supposed to be a 4-star hotel? In my opinion it is 2 stars at most!
The hotel is located at Lake Toya, very nice view.
Do expect numbers of tour group stay in this hotel.
Worth for the stay!
My room was included buffet breakfast and dinner. Food was great... unbeatable deal!
Stunning hotel
The lobby of the hotel is absolutely stunning. Every room has a view to Toya lake and the island. The beauty of this place is absolutely overwhelming. The real highlight of this hotel is the onsen, open air hot spring bath with a view to the lake. Worth it. The rooms are ok, nothing out of the ordinary. The food is great. Staff are friendly and even if their English is not perfect they'll always try to be helpful.
Rooms are old and dated, should undergo renovation. Otherwise food, service and cleaniness all good.

our lake toya journey
The hotel looked grand and well furnished at the lobby but the cold welcome upon arrival at the reception desk wasn't welcoming. Our deduction is they have bus loads of tourist and they were not keen to smile to any at this rate. The rooms at our wing were rather old and would certainly need a new upgrade otherwise the rest of the hotel facilities ( swimming pool and onsen) were both wonderful. The breakfast area and selection was impressive. My family of 4 have stayed here twice and hopefully if we do come again the next round, the rooms and service will improve. Location was great!
Great Fireworks and Steaks!
Great stay and meals at Lake Toya Sun Palace. Room condition was rather old but it was clean nevertheless. It smelt of cigarette smoke on the first day but improved subsequently. Highlight will be the daily fireworks on the lake which is directly in front of hotel. Will never forget the fireworks finale. Buffet meals were good too especially the beef steaks!
Excellence lake view and firework
Good Onsen, great views at lake
Rooms need to have Windows renovated, room was stuffy when we arrived, fortunately helpful and responsive staff brought us portable Aircon set/ humidifier, which saved the day.
Room with nice lake view but poor & old deco
Fabulous lake view from room but room interior decoration indeed very old, nice onsen facility and breakfast and dinner with good variety of choices
Nice place to walk around and relax during spring
Relaxing.
Big hotel but food is not so good
Food variety is good at buffet dinner and breakfast
itinerary #14021404499 problem with check-in
Date: July 13th, 2015 evening (9:15 - 10:30 pm) Incident: Missing room confirmation from hotel side (itin# 14021404499) The front desk missed this booking confirmationon July 13th-14th but received another booking on July 14th-15th (Itin# 14021589102). Initially, the front desk staff mentioned that we could only check-in next day (July 14th). We had to find our only solution for the night stay on July 13th. The front desk and supervisor were very reluctant to help out. They claimed they did not receive Expedia booking. When Expedia resent the confirmation, they were still reluctant to give us 2 rooms. With our persistence and patience to negotiate for close to one hour, they finally gave us 2 rooms with tatami. We had back pain so that we insisted 2 rooms with 2 twin-size beds. Finally, the hotel supervisor gave us 2 rooms with 2 twin beds. However, those rooms might not get cleaned up, but still we had place to sleep. In summary, both supervisor and front desk staff were very inflexible and defended their hotel policy. The front desk staff changed to more flexible and accommodating after 45 minutes of negotiation. If we were not persistent enough, we could have to sleep in our car or at the hotel lobby! It's quite unpleasant experience that we suffered because of missing confirmation from hotel side. William Chan
The hygiene of the onsen is not that clean and the hotel is full with China tourists. It is so noisy and hard to relax.
It us just little bit old and not tidy
Great facilities in a separated area
Hotel facilities are great. Nice onsen with lake view. I love crane game too! Bathroom is a bit old but ok. Hotel is a bit far from where you get on a ferry.
Lake Toya Stay
Enjoyed our stay tremendously. Wake up to beautiful mountain and lake scenary from our room window. Fantastic breakfast spread. Nice onsen and waterpark. Hotel staff very pleasant and helpful. Stunning fireworks display nightly. Will definitely come back to stay in this hotel again.
Cheap and good
It's a grand old lady. Shows it's age but still good. Nice onsen and facilities are good for family with kids.
Terrible smoking room with surprise onsen tax
When booking, there was no initial indication for choice of non smoking room. There was a smoking room check box at the credit card payment page which I did not check. Unfortunately, the hotel was smoking rooms only, so I had to suffer a night. Moreover, there was a surprise 300yen extra charge on checking out for what they call a Hot Spring Tax. Positive side is the great view and cheap but nice breakfast spread.
I wish I had a permanent room here!
LOVE THIS HOTEL!! Our favorite stay in Hokkaido. The things that were AMAZING: the breathtaking view of Toya lake from our room, the lobby/lounge area w/vaulted glass windows w/the same view, the hotel onsen, the random pool/waterpark, the arcade, the nightly fireworks... Even the buffet restaurant was really good, & I really dislike buffets! I will definitely be back here. Just thinking of this hotel makes me miss it...
Good if you love Japanese Onsen!
Quick overnight stop over. Small town mainly surround by onsens or Japsnese Bath and Saunas. Nothing much to explore.
5* view, 4* onsen but sadly 3* service
Marvelous location and nice indoor and outdoor onsen pools but front desk hospitality isn't up to the mark of the Japanese proactive helpfulness that we've come to expect. The English-speaking staff seemed rather aloof and did not inform of onsen hours in his orientation and misinformed us that the nightly fireworks can only be viewed from the overcrowded terrace and can't be viewed from our room which we could.
Quite a nice place with lakeview
The overall hotel design is modern and nice, particularly the main lobby and onsen. however, the room is rather old, includingthe bathroom. The outdoor festive lighting decoration was wonderful. The staff was not fluent in English and not as friendly and helpfl as expected.
beautiful hotel
got checked into a giant suite.. the lake view big shower/bath room was most impressive..
Good location to Lake Toya
Booked a twin room with lake view and was upgraded to a big suite due to hotel was full on the night of check-in. Room was huge and clean, has a balcony, a living room area with full set sofa, and a separate huge shower with bathtub facing the lake. Good quality shampoo and bath toiletries provided. Decor of the hotel and room is outdated, except the newly renovated lobby. Hotel is huge with many facilities such as onsen, huge indoor swimming pool and even an arcade. Buffet style breakfast was so-so. Huge hotel that caters to tour groups so expect lots of crowd.
Good place, marred by poor service at reception
Spacious rooms, although the building is slightly old (buildings are about 30 year old). Experience was marred by the poor service at the reception. Reception staff do not really speak English, are not as warm as service staff from other hotels, and they give replies as though they do not want you to be talking to them. Dining hall is big, serving buffet that could cater to few hundred guests. Have your dinner early to avoid the crowd. Seem like many tour groups stayed for the night during my stay, and if you have your dinner at the same timing with these groups, you might have to wait for up to 30 minutes or more. Avoid this hotel if you dislike big crowds (hordes of tourists)
Room not clean as usual Japanese hotels
Great location, bad service, poor cleanliness
Pros: Location is right next to the water wihch is beautiful. The room has a large window overlooking the water/lake and the view connot be beat. CONS: hotel concierge does not speak English! For a resort, I expected better. The young man who checked us in also was a little rude. The hotel room was old and slightly dingy with dirty carpeting. The onsen was also old and the outdoor onsen does not overlook the lake as it was closed up. OVERALL, great location and view from room but the condition and service put us off.
Old hotel, go only if you like hot spring
Service is really a down-side about this hotel. Hotel's front desk staff speaks terrible English which is annoying, and they seems to have fun teasing English speaking guests without politeness..very much not the "good manner Japanese service" style I remembered. I asked for Non-smoking room, the room was okay, and the lake view was magnificent. However, the leather chairs in the room smell really smoky, doesn't seem has been clean for quite a while. Still, the hot spring bath is wonderful and great. With that particular hot-spring bath pool, I rate it neutral. Otherwise, will be a no-go because of the old facilities and the service attitude. Go only if you really enjoy hot spring.
Great Hotel
Toya Sun Palace Hotel is a very big hotel with indoor pools and hot baths. The services are good and the lobby and bedrooms have full window view of Lake Toya. You could view the fireworks at the lobby. The buffet dinner and breakfast have good variety of choices and the food are tasty. The room is spaciously big and has a tatami area with tea table by the side of the full window with Lake Toya view. The hotel is located about 2 bus stops after the Lake Toya information centre. It is almost the last bus stop if you take bus from JR Toya station. There is no shops at the surrounding except the hotels convenient store.
Beautiful location on Toya lake
The hotel is located right on the lake, offering a great view from our window. Note - if you arrive by car, the hotel car parks can get quite full on weekends. We had to ask for assistance in parking - difficult with the hotel staff limited English, and were eventually given a parking spot in the staff reserved area. There is a large onsen in the basement, along with a huge swimming pool area and other gaming facilities. You can watch the nightly fireworks over the lake from your hotel window, although we found it better to go down to the waterfront. Wi Fi is only available in the lobby, which is somewhat disappointing. Breakfast was good - there is a large dining room offering plenty of choices. The room size was quite decent, larger than the average room size we experienced in Japan.
Good place to relax and enjoy beautiful lake scene
Stayed 1 night with family. Room with lake scene facing. Excellent views. Rooms were a bid old but clean. Spa access and wide selection for breakfast.
I stayed at this hotel for the Ironman 2014
I booked my room well in advance and paid approximately $250 / night for 5 nights throughout the event. This included breakfast and dinner in a large buffet styled cafeteria. During my stay I found a review of this hotel describing it as a very bad Butlins camp and unfortunately I have to agree. I was actually quite excited to stay in the region as the scenery is spectacular in the area and the hotel was apparently well known fro their pool spa. I don't have a problem staying in a one or two star hotel as long as the price reflects this. Japan is expensive but I stayed in a Hilton in downtown Tokyo for the same price (minus breakfast and dinner). Reception was small and understaffed for the amount of people arriving. There was obviously going to be a language barrier which I accept and take as part of the charm of traveling. This was not my first trip to Japan and overall i find Japenese people to be extremely courteous and caring about other people and it is the politest country I have ever visited. My room was in a wing next to a building site where the hotel is obviously renovating (desperately needed). I stayed in a western twin room. Everything in the room was functional however it was dated (probably 20-30 years e.g. analogue turn dial phone). The room was also very dirty (e.g. I pulled away the table from the wall and found severe dust caking of the carpet and wall - I took a picture!).
The facility is very old. Especially the bathroom at the own room is not clean and comfortable at all. If the hotel wants to continue the business, it is high time to renew the facility. The buffet style dinner was so so.
Very old and dirty, no air conditioning. Room is too old, very ugly decoration. Just like a room with monsters. Restaurant food is also not very good. Just the new and extended area is nice!

Good but old
Nice facilities but the room is a bit aged
Hot spring facilities
Nice Spa Hotel
Superb scenic view with excellent spa facilities

Right on the side of Lake Toya
+ ve side: Right on the side of Lake Toya, gorgeous view, a fantastic modern and grand-looking lobby, and a spa overlooking the lake. - ve side: worn down looking bedroom with insects / chaotic in the dining lobby in meal time / car park far away from hotel
Big hot spring with excellent lake view, room is big and comfortable and the swimming pool is fun for playing

Charged non-smoking room for Smoking room
The sun palace placed me a smoking room but accepted my non-smoking reservation. After making two complaints, before I was moved to a true non-smoking floor.
