Nice but crazy expensive for what you get.
It is a nice property and nicely kept, but exceptionally expensive for what you get and will likely not repeat our stay here. We had a swim up suite and had the expectation that we would have beach ocean views from our suite which we definitely did not have. Our patio was much smaller than others and you could only see the beach from one corner. We would recommend swim up suites 8-11 definitely from what they looked like, but avoid 1-3 for sure. We complained about this given that it cost almost $2000 for 3 nights and were told they can offer complementary breakfast only for our disappointment. We were offered an upgrade to a beachfront suite for an additional $450 for 2 of the 3 nights of our stay, but felt that the property should have just offered the upgrade complimentary if the room was otherwise available so late in the day instead of risking to disappoint customers so much. Also, expect to pay high prices for drinks and food while on resort and we would recommend supporting local businesses nearby instead which were fantastic. Food wait staff were nice but very slow for beach service. Otherwise it is a very nice looking property and very clean.
We enjoyed our stay. It was super relaxing and the service was great. Highly recommend.
We visited the Thompson after our wedding in Mexico City. The hotel is incredible. The rooms are spacious and very comfortable. The beach cannot be beat. The staff is so hospitable and kind. Even the restaurants are wonderful. We will definitely be back and cannot recommend this place enough!
Gorgeous beach, excellent service.
This property is beautiful and conveniently located and the staff was incredible and extremely accommodating! The only reason I won’t give it five stars is due to our AC going out twice and our fire alarm low battery going off at 4 AM. For a four night stay, we had issues three of the nights. Otherwise, the rest of the stay was fantastic.
Top notch as always
The staff was amazing, food terrific, lovely rooms. Can’t say enough!
Service was great! so was the staff. Food was very expensive and most meals were just ok with the exception of the grill nights on the beach. They we also very expensive but very good and worth the cost.
Everything was great, especially the staff who are working for peanuts. That should change. Otherwise, everything was wonderful and the location is perfect. I will be back.
Great getaway
A classic resort we have visited for many years, but slowly losing its shine with Hyatt eliminating perks annually. Breakfast and lunch on the beach is wonderful, but dinners off site are a must. On site not good. Great beach and rooms.
Spectacular property
Unsafe area - No warning, no refund
This hotel is in a part of Mexico that the US government lists as a "LEVEL 4 - DO NOT TRAVEL" area. Unfortunately, neither Hotels.com nor the Thompson mention that fact. And they are unwilling to refund the (expensive) room I booked. Buyer beware.
The furniture was very old, the bed was uncomfortable, the bedding had holes in it. I asked for my luggage to be picked up at 6:30 in the morning and no one showed up. I had to bring my luggage down from a second floor without an elevator. They forgot my request, they only apologized. Beautiful location, they need to pay more attention to services.
This is a lovely property with friendly and very helpful staff. The beach is clean and beautiful and beach staff is great. The pools could use a little maintenance on things like broken tiles, but appeared overall clean and inviting. Spa staff was great. Only hazard I ran into was the two steps down off the bed in the middle of the night.
The pool, access to beach and service felt magical.
Loved it- great food, atmosphere, views and location
You did not need to go anywhere!
beautiful area very quiet. warm water beautiful beach
The staff goes above and beyond to assist in everything . Extremely kind, and flexible. So impressed. The room was beautiful, the beach pristine and comfortable lounge chairs. Excellent ocean swimming as well as pool options. It is a gem. Not just a slice of heaven but the full pie.
Nos encanto esta muy limpio personal atento y todos muy amables en general a unos pasos de playa la Ropa
Beautiful grounds
Food and beverage quality needs improvement.
Very nice
Thompsom
Very nice place. Staff was extremely friendly and always asking if anything was needed.
Two restaurants: Upscale, great! Everyday - not too great.
I love the Thompson! Francisco was such a great employee and he took care of all our needs. I will look forward to seeing him next year! He is a plus to have on the staff😊
The hotel is modern, clean and beautiful. It has pool for adults and for family. Tennis court and decent gym. It has two restaurants with excellent service and delicious food. The beach is clean and safe, you can swim there.
Been there 3 times and even though it has changed owners it has always stayed consistent with quality and service.
The vibe was not for us. Mostly drunk Americans. The hotel is ok. Be aware it’s on a public beach so don’t expect a 5 star beach experience. The rooms are big and very nice, but the lagoon suites on level one with the plunge pools are pointless as they get no sun and there is zero view with a dark room. Service at the restaurant is very slow. Usually takes 30 minutes or longer to get your food so plan accordingly. That’s if they wait on you at all. I wouldn’t eat at the hotel if possible. The biggest problem is service from the staff at the bar, pool, beach and restaurants. Either they don’t have enough or they weren’t trained well. I tried to speak with management but they did respond.
DISAPPOINTED
Asked three times prior to arrival for a room near the Hao restaurant asked on arrival and for three days after and were told to not ask again that reception "knew what we wanted". We were put in the room the longest distance from the Hao in a walk up room for two 79 year olds, not nice for guests having stayed there over 41 years having requested the room from a prior stay and paying for another room for quests. VERY DISAPPOINTING. On checkout were told to call next time for requests, etc.
The Thompson is hard to beat. Easy check in process, beautiful rooms, a great walking beach with many dining options close to the hotel. They have a new Chef named Omar he is on top of his game. Outstanding staff ready to meet your every need.
My favorite resort in Mexico. The food is fantastic, room design is beautiful, very soft robes, an amazing gym, the best beachfront property on Playa La Ropa, and to top it off service is amazing. We especially want to thank Francisco for the beachfront food service. He is such a hard working man and father of 3 children, we loved talking to him and he was so professional, friendly, and helpful. We also want to thank the event sales manager Vicente who showed utmost professionalism, hospitality, and charisma in every interaction. We love this Thompson so much!
Hotel tranquilo y cómodo. Comida deliciosa y atención del staff espectacular.
By far the best property in Zihuatanejo and Xtapa in every aspect. We will be back!!
Pros - the room was very large and nicely appointed. We loved the location (very walkable) and the overall property and beach were beautiful! Staff was pleasant. The weather in Zihuatanejo is fantastic, 87 and sunny everyday! Cons - our room check in was 2 hours late. After traveling all day we were tired and annoyed that we had to wait until 5 pm to get into our room that should’ve been ready at 3. Food and drinks are pricey and not great but we expected that. Service was “just ok” for the price of the hotel/amenities we thought service would be exceptional not the case. Always had to find someone to get a drink/foo, not what we’ve typically experienced in our travel throughout Mexico. The pool is large but not clean. We were just there for a week and I never saw anyone clean the pool. Same sand was in the pool day after day, kinda gross. Overall we had a nice vacation but I cannot say I’ll return to The Thompson given the prices and service. It was a good trip but not GREAT. We will return to Zihuatanejo because the weather in January is perfection but I’ll likely be researching other hotels.
The beach in front of the hotel is very busy with locals. Folks come with their umbrellas and chars in large groups that blocks the beach views from the very expensive hotel. Also, Thompson used to have live music in the evenings but not anymore. Disappointing over all.
Had so much fun.
Everything was great but they are still holding money on my credit card from when we checked in and out. They need to take it off when ppl leave
This is a nice quiet beach front hotel on a beautiful beach, playa de Ropa. The service was amazing, very accommodating for all your needs. You can’t beat the sunsets, and the food at Hao was delicious for breakfast lunch and dinner.
Relaxing time.
Great location and beach. Friendly staff.
This was probably the best overall experience I’ve ever had at a hotel. The staff is outstanding, the grounds are lovely, the proximity to the beach can’t be beat, and the on-site dining options are way above average.
Every time we return to the property it feels like coming home. We took a large group of friends "27" adults and kids. We were able to get reservations everywhere we wanted to eat at the times we wanted. A shout out to all our Mexican Family, Eddieberto, Diego, Juan, Sarah, and front desk staff.
We didn’t like the food
Paradise. I didn’t want to leave. The entire experience was just lovely.
Amazing location. Palapa’s on Playa La Ropa each day. Tennis in the morning. Perfect
This property is nice place to stay, if you like quiet, swimming in the beach, the best beach in Mexico guaranteed. Food is OK, they need to improve on that, there are options allong the beach with nice resample priced restaurants. The workers there are nice and friendly, and more friendly if you tip. Taxi to the hotel from the airport is about $35.00,or 500 pesos. We stayed 7 days, and it went so fast, walk the beach and lay on the nice lounge chairs.
The Thompson is the premier property on Playa Ropa. Excellent rooms and hotel grounds, exceptional staff, and a fantastic kitchen lead by a super talented chef. This is our 5th time at the Thompson and we can’t wait to go back a 6th.
Excellent January break
Resort is beautiful and recently nicely refurbished to high standards. Great place to go for a January getaway as we have done many times. Dinner dining is fine, not great, trying too hard to be something, not Zihuatanejo, but a variety of choices off property available. Great beach with expected lunch food and bar service.
I have wanted to stay at the Thompson Zihuatanejo for a few years now and it did not disappoint. The small boutique feel of the resort and the Mexican charm was amazing. The beach cannot be beaten. Jorge took us on the kayak tour across the bay and I highly recommend it. It was so good. The staff were friendly and attentive. The room was incredible. We loved it and we will definitely be back!
Excellant!
The hotel is beautiful and all staff was great. I loved the attention and the service.
The most beautiful resort in Zihuatanejo. I absolutely loved everything about my stay. The resort staff was amazing, the food curated with vibrancy and flavor, the rooms were beautiful and clean, equipped with espresso! I would highly recommend this resort to anyone staying in Playa, Zihuatanejo and Cabo. They know service and they do it well.
Our second time staying here. Love the food. The beach. The grounds and the service. Perfect holiday with our children.
Truly the best place to stay for location, beach, amenities, food, and especially, service.
This property is paradise! The Thompson group has done some wonderful design improvements. I do miss some of the personal guest perks, coffee/pastries delivered to your room daily, but hoping new management will reinstate some of the cherished great traditions
the dinner menu was underwhelming. The food was too experimental for its own good and tasted bad honestly. The staff was lovely and the grounds were really clean and well-groomed. the adult pool had no day beds at all and the after wasn't warm enough. other than that is was a magical stay.
We really liked the resort. Not sure if the price was justified, but it's certainly a nice spot to spend a few days.
Best property in the beach Greta staff
Paradise
Beautiful place! Pricey but well worth it!
Love this property. It always feels like coming home! Staff, accommodations, options for dinner
The resort is beautiful and very well-run. They coordinated our covid tests for us. They keep track of you when you leave the resort and return in addition to calling cabs. The food in the restaurant is good, though overpriced. The room was large and comfortable with daily housekeeping. It’s right on the beach which is clean and walkable with very fine sand. Playa la Rosa is a lovely beach with low waves since it’s inside the bay. Will definitely come again!
The location was ideal. The beach setting was awesome! The staff was super friendly and helpful! Rosie gives a great massage! A few of us wanted to sit by the pool in some lounge chairs but that was not an option. Overall, it was a great trip😊
There is no place like this!!!!!! the perfecto location in all senses, small and cozy, best view of the sunset, best beach, beautiful pool etc.....
If you are looking for great weather and a quieter town experience with great food and the ocean, Zihua is a must and if you want wonderful accommodations, look no further than the Thompson. There are so many wonderful things to say about Thompson and Zihua. The employees at Thompson are thoughtful, detail oriented, very friendly and were so helpful to ensure my stay was relaxing. Plus Thompson is on La Ropa -- which is an incredible beach -- warm water, rolling calm waves, and soft sand. The local food was fresh and delicious. My room was well equipped with everything I needed. If you are able to visit this lovely town, be sure to join the locals for the baby turtle release and see if Carlos is available for a tour of La Chole. A special thank you to Ana Lucia and her colleagues at the front desk, Francisco, Wong, Jose and everyone else who was so friendly and warm throughout my entire stay. Gracias!
We could not have asked for a more perfect weekend getaway! The Thompson Zihuantanejo was such a fabulous experience! The hotel itself is modern and beautiful but keeps a very relaxed beach vibe. The staff and service went above and beyond - remember our names, drink orders and made sure we had everything we could have ever needed. Big shout out to Fransisco who was THE best server! The hotel rooms are beyond comfortable and lavish. We will definitely be back! Thank you so much Thompson!
Location and the staff..
The Thompson Zihuatanejo is an absolutely stunning property set in front of a beautiful bay with 95° ocean water, this trip is a must do. The resort is very quiet, not a party place at all. There is a wonderful staff and wonderful guests. My seven-year-old daughter had a blast all day long playing in the ocean, doing activities, and enjoying the natural setting.
AMAZING
Our experience at the Thompson was AMAZING! We stayed for our honeymoon and everything was excellent!! From customer service to food everything was great. We will definitely stay again.
FABULOUS HOTEL
I can’t say enough amazing things about this property. I would live there if I could! Service, rooms, food, all excellent. Breakfast was exceptional and ribeye tacos were a standout during lunch. I’m ready to go back!
A+ Service and Stay
Hands down the best service I have received at any hotel I've visited (and I've been to a lot). The team here was so incredibly helpful, kind, accommodating, they went above and beyond and truly thought of everything for our stay. The property was spotless and beautiful, safe and relaxing, our room with a private plunge pool was very spacious and beautifully decorated, and my facial at the spa was heaven. This is a rare gem, a 5 star stay for a very fair price, and we cannot wait to return as often as possible! Big thank you to the staff, especially Christina, Juan, Jorge and the others :)
Close access to the playa
Hermoso hotel en todos Comida excellente Personal muy profesional y amistoso
Great spot, excellent service, beautiful accommodations!
Absolutely wonderful. I cannot fault this property, the gorgeous rooms, the amazing food but above everything the staff. All over the world I have never experienced service and genuine caring staff as I did at Thompson’s. I believe they are led by an exceptional manager that is grateful for his wonderful staff. I cannot fault this property, the best in Zihua by far
Great stay would do it again
Amazing views, swim up pool to room and great service. Close to town so $5 or less taxi’s available everywhere and no one trying to sell you things all day every day.
Loved my four nights at the Thompson. Can’t wait to go back
Dissapointing
I stayed at this hotel some years ago when it was called Villas del Sol and I loved it. I was planning a trip back to Zihuatanejo and decided on this hotel primarily because I read good things about a major renovation to the property by Thompson Hotels. Major disappointment. The renovation can hardly be seen, other than superficial decorations that actually detract from the property as it now feels like just another chain hotel. The service in particular was a major source of dissatisfaction. I’ve stayed at great resorts in Mexico of the same price range and attentive, friendly, professional service is something you can rely on. Food and beverage service by the Thompson staff was particularly dissatisfying as it usually came with an almost brusque demeanor. On one particular occasion I made a comment to one of the staff pointing out that this used to be a great hotel and felt it had gone downhill, and all he did was agree with me saying “I know, it’s not the same anymore.” Wow! I don’t feel the resort has good value. It’s a shame really because the property used to great. Disappointed in Thompson management. Next time I will look elsewhere because Mexico has great options in this price range.
Fantastic experience. The property, the view, the beach and specially the view are all exceptional. Chef Miguel and his entire staff are one of the best in Mexico and they are taking the Mexican food to the next level. If you have traveled the world and looking for the perfect beach vacation the Thompson Zihuatanejo is the best place.
Service oriented and aim to please guests Property was recently remodeled and well maintained.
Quiet beautiful beachfront property with outstanding service
Visiting the Paradise
Great hotel in a wonderful beach. The facilities were excellent and very exclusive! They have all the security measures for COVID. The food at the restaurant was delicious! They have a very nice non crowed beach and the people who attended us were very gentle. It was a great experience!
Very Nice but out of place
This is a very nice property, with a large staff that works hard on hospitality and the grounds, and it shows. If that is what you want, this place is great. If you would like a less expensive place that is more in keeping with Mexico, those places exist nearby. All I want is sand in my toes and a good beach, so this place was a bit much for me.
Have stayed many times and it is a slice of paradise.
Amazing Stay in Zihua
Such a great resort! Everyone was amazing - from front desk staff to everyone on the beach/restaurants. The rooms were really comfortable, clean and well maintained. The food by the beach is actually reasonably priced (obviously much more than eating in town) and actually really good and lots of healthy options. The security team even pulled grabbed us while walking to a restaurant nearby at night to watch a turtle lay its eggs, and shared other local tips, etc. Such a relaxing and special experience. Highly recommend the swim up suites - no better way to start your day then to have coffee on your balcony and jump right into the pool.
Hello! I have been there six times! It’s the third time they change ownership! The facility is to die for however I miss the previous ownership! They need more waiters! The waiters they have are the best in Mexico! The food was delicious however I miss the Mexican traditional food they use to have! Our favorite thing to do at the hotel was to watch sports on the pool when we walked in on Thursday there was no tv I had to ask for them to put it up which they did! What o lovea about this hotel is service!!!!!! No other hotel has it as good as this one! I feel they could do more with there beautiful facility! Miss the ping pong table! They need to re open the restaurant behind the tv pool! The massages on the beach are amazing had one every day!
Best place in Zihua to stay!!
Amazing! The beach suites are gorgeous! The food is so fantastic and the management and bar staff cater to your every need! Will definitely be back!
Staff was awesome and property was beautiful! We had a great time there!!
Great hidden Gem
Great hotel with great food an service. Cant wait to come back.
The hotel is far as noce as when it was a Vaceroy property.
Everything nice. Staff was very friendly and professional.
The gardens and water features are stunningly beautiful. The staff is friendly and helpful. The bay and sandy beach make this resort unique in Zihuatanejo.
Beautifully designed rooms, nice pool, and courteous staff. Only tennis court in area.
The staff was excellent, nice, friendly. Bit slow on beach service. Food was top notch. Better than I anticipated. The room condition for a 5 star hotel was nice but dare I say not what I expected—open light fixture wires, stained walls. It irritates me when there is no coffee in a room at a 5 star place. View of trash out of the window wasn’t up to standard. Gym was hot and bikes requires clear shoes that were not available. It is a beautiful landscape and main lobby
This is our third stay at the Thompson, but our first since the major renovation. It’s still a gorgeous property - certainly the best in Zihuatanejo. The rooms are beautifully done, spacious and comfortable. The staff is simply the best. We love everyone who works there. But...for some unknown reason the new owners are going for a different ‘concept’. And although they haven’t ruined the hotel yet, they’ve certainly diminished the experience. Why for instance have they decided to blast club music in the evenings. Zihuatanejo is a old fishing village, not an Acapulco wannabe. One night they even imported in a bunch of young people (who obviously weren’t stayin at the hotel) and tried to create some sort of hip beach club. I mean how is it a good business model to annoy your patrons. They’ve also changed chefs. Or at least the menu. And though a few items on there are good - fish tacos, the hamburger, the French toast — much of the food is over priced, way over-thought, and frankly mediocre. Walk twenty yards done the beach and you’ll have a much better (and much cheaper) culinary experience. And you wont have to listen to the dreadful music. Look, we still love the property, and will no doubt go back, but my message to the new owners is — don’t ruin a good thing. Tourists go to Zihuatanejo to relax, experience the Mexican culture, food and people. If I want a club atmosphere, I’ll stay here in Los Angeles.
It's a lovely property. The only thing we missed in the room was a coffee maker and a kitchenette. But the staff was extremely accommodating and catered to our every need!
Tennis courts are dangerously unplayable and have been for years. There is no reading light over the bed. And the lovely amenity of coffee or tea with the newspaper in the morning has been discontinued. It is disappointing. But worse is the music that blares on the beach disturbing the ambiance of waves and seashore.
The property was clean and modern. All staff in all areas need to say ola to make visitors feel welcome. When checking out, we were never asked about our stay or even a thank you for visiting.
Amazing place
Very nice and beautiful hotel. We received an upgrade of the room and a credit for the spa upon arrival. The room was wonderful. it had its own small pool and was very spacious. There was no Coffee maker in the room and the room service took over an hour on the 1st day but was fast the 2nd day. The only suggestions are; to have a quieter air conditioning and to set up a DND signage. The cleaners kept walking into the room as the door-buzzer was not noticeable from the bedroom. The beach is right in front of the hotel and both restaurants had good variety of food. We'd definitely go back there.
