The Moorings has a lot going for it. The location is excellent, right in town and just steps to the lake, restaurants, coffee shops, etc. We had booked one of the studios. It had amazing views of the lake and mountains, was very clean and had a kitchenette and a small balcony which was a great place to sit in the mornings with our coffee/tea. Our room had AC which we really appreciated on warm days. The staff were very nice and the room was very quiet despite being right in downtown. However, we felt like it wasn't a very good value for the price. We usually stay next door at the Lakeside Apartments. Those units are much bigger (huge luxury 1 BR apartments with full kitchens, in-unit washer/dryers, and large balconies/patios) for almost the same price: it's $375 NZD for a studio at the Moorings and $379 NZD for a 1BR apartment on the pool level (not as good a view) at Lakeside. Also, our room at the Moorings had a few quirks. The door to the adjoining room couldn't be locked so we ended up moving a desk in front of it. There's also some obvious wear & tear (marks in the bathroom and on the walls) and quirks (the bathroom sink is almost at knee level). In addition, they were not offering daily service to the rooms due to a staffing shortage. There is free parking but the lot was pretty cramped and took some careful navigating to get in and out of. Overall, the Moorings is a great option, just not at the price that we paid.

Lake view Feb 2025

When booking the Moorings I prioritised the lake view over other options that may have been cheaper and/or more spacious. The lake and mountain view from the room and balcony was certainly worth any premium, despite the road in the foreground, although a small table on the balcony permitting outdoor meals would have enhanced the experience. The studio room was smaller than other hotel apartments we booked on our trip but was perfectly adequate and to a good standard (albeit not luxurious). The location is very central in Wanaka which is certainly an advantage.

Great location and nice clean room. Helpful staff with suggestions on what to do for the day. Laundry facility was very helpful too.

The moorings was close to town and we could walk everywhere. The room was very nice, and the private outside area made it really lovely. The customer service was brilliant, Dan really went above and beyond.

Great apartment with view of the lake. Quiet.

First impression upon check-in, greeting lacks warmth, appeared to be untrained in hospitality - or may be just can’t be bothered kind of attitude. Check out staff was someone else with laissez fair attitude. Staff were not rude. Property was spacious with steep stairs to upper level. Bathroom upstairs, shower closet/corner can only fit a child. Both bathrooms have heated tiles and water pressure was very good. There were children or a child next door who frequently run/stomp creating noise through common wall, even at night. Sheets appeared to be clean but I found bugs in my bed the morning after. Very good amenities for group/families. There is a common coin-operated laundry room. Good location, close to lake, restaurants and shops.

Felt it was overpriced. The bathroom was rundown and needs upgraded. Paint flaking off and the bath is chipped. We were very underwhelmed when we checked in

The Moorings is in a great location where you can walk to all the shops and restaurants. The condo was clean and comfortable but smallish for four people. It was really nice to have private parking and the staff were very helpful and cheerful to deal with. I would recommend this place if you want to spend several days in Wanaka!

Perfect stay

The stay started with a marvellous friendly welcome. The room was fine, the beds comfortable and the view and location the best you could ask for.

Beautiful family apartment. Spacious, loved that the kids had their own bathroom upstairs complete with their own hair dryer, and tv in their room. Such beautiful facilities! Will definitely be back. Nice and clean!

Lovely location and great staff. I booked a disabled room as I am an above knee amputee and the built in shower chair was missing. Had to use a deck chair from outside. Otherwise the stay was great

We had a late arvo checkin due to another place letting us down but the Moorings did not and was a beautiful place overlooking the lake and mountains in the back ground, Warm, Clean would definitely stay again

Great Location and Views

Great Location and views of the lake. Clean and spacious room. I like a firm bed, and this was good. Right in the middle of downtown and walkable to all things needed.

Beautiful view of Lake Wanaka.

Loved this property, it was like home away from home in that all the essentials were there, clean, warm and comfortable and we were finally able to cook something to eat instead of eating out all the time.

Rather expensive for what it was but nice amenities and property manager was very nice. Main complaints are that the washer didn’t work very well and the bathroom smelled very musty.

The view was amazing in the morning with sun shining on the lake. We also were greeted back to our room by a very friendly kitty cat.

Close to town

Stayed in this conveniently located room selection for two nights. Perfect for walking to town for a wide variety of dining options and shopping choices. Fabulous views of the lake and mountains from the private balcony. Simple kitchenette and comfortable bathroom with shallow but appreciated bath integrated with a shower. Easy access for sightseeing and leisure activities. Parking close to rooms very convenient. Stairs only access to upstairs rooms but downstairs rooms available.

Good as

The Moorings was a great spot for our family to stay while in Wanaka. It is walking distance to everything that you could want to do in town and the apartments are the perfect space for a family to spread out a bit. Highly recommend!

Great location

Lack of head height above double bed not being advertised is unacceptable. The tariff was too high given this issue. Will not return unless the roof and ceiling are popped up

Wonderful stay, centrally located to bars and restaurants with a lovely view of Lake Wanaka. Darrell was so helpful to us when we had car trouble too. Highly recommend!

Be wary! Inspect before signing or paying.

We reserved one of their 3-bedroom lakeview units because (supposedly) it was the only room they had left while we were in Wanaka The owner/manager had us sign a contract for a 3-bedroom - and prepay our entire stay - before he put us in a 2-bedroom until with a mostly obstructed lakeview. When we asked him to refund us the difference for taking a smaller unit, he refused. Don’t sign or prepay for a room here until you see it. The management has no integrity.

Very tired accommodation

The motel has a great view of the lake . However, it is extremely tired , dented furniture , primitive bathroom, stains on walls and doors and not very clean. The bed was extremely uncomfortable. It was the worse accommodation by a mile on a month tour of New Zealand and was one of the most expensive. Only stayed one out of the two nights booked.

Bit dated but very well located being within easy walk to lake front, shops, dining and all other attractions. Apartment had all we wanted and very comfortable. Great value for money.

We loved every bit of our stay at this motel despite just staying for one night. It was so well maintained. The owner was pretty friendly and made the check-in really easy. They have a really adorable cat who loves his scratches. But the best part of the stay was the view of the lake. Simply beautiful. Loved it. I would definitely recommend it.

Clean and tidy unit, everything that was needed was there, excellent customer service, fantastic view

Stayed in one of the apartments. The fireplace kept us all warm, so we didn't need to use the electric blankets, even though they were provided. While everything was quite small, it was great for somewhere to stay while we skied during the days. Kitchen facilities are really good. Beds are a little firm, but it's all very clean. Sky was typically all that we watched. They have a bunch of DVDs available, but there was no DVD player downstairs. Darren sorted it for us, which we appreciated. Shower curtain in the downstairs bathroom is a nightmare. Otherwise, no real complaints.

Great location and accommodation for a couple of nights.

Great care needs to be taken if you stay here. I recommend checking the room before paying. They have a strange payment system that I think is setup so you can't get a refund. We found the air conditioning didn't work - which you will really need. The fridge didn't seal properly and the property hasn't been properly maintained. One of the bedrooms was unusable because it was so hot. The management refused even a partial refund.

Just off the a main road made it a little noisy with traffic. But it wasn’t horrible. Room was clean and staff was helpful. Laundry facilities there were a big help. Convenient walking distance to restaurants and shops.

Fantastic location by the lakeside. Within 3 mins walk to central. Room is clean. Cooking facilities available. No regrets staying here. Only stayed for 2 nights. Should have stayed longer.

Solid Spot

Great location! Walking distance to town and about 20 mins walk from the tree. Clean with a great view of the lake.

Recommend staying at the Moorings despite the somewhat dated rooms. Do not get me wrong, the room are still in extremely good condition and the housekeeping does an excellent job of keeping the place spotless. Good views of the Lake Wanaka and a short drive to Roys Peak and other hiking trails. Do ask for a warmer room if you are coming in winter though, the heater seemed to struggle to keep the room warm.

The lakeview from the mooring is amazing!! Mum and I loved every bit of staying here :) also great location to restaurants and shops! highly recommend

Good location, helpful staff

Fast check-in in a pouring afternoon. Reception confirmed the payment credit card, choice of milk, and handed the key in a snap. Spacious room on ground level, with parking right outside the door. Surprisingly didn't hear much noise of parking thru the night (probably drowned in rain), yet the noise of traffic from the street was rather distinct. The motel is very close to coach/bus stop, with a number of restaurants nearby. Walk into town centre was a breezy 7 mins (more shops and New World supermarket), but a good 20 mins to the Wanaka Tree. Checkout was similarly no-fuss. Will use the motel again when returning to Wanaka.

Fantastic views from our balcony, we had a studio room no. 10. Rooms lovely and warm. Great shower, and clean bathroom. Wished we had stayed longer. Heaps of meal options within walking distance.
