The hotel was really nice. The staff did help us in many areas but even though they lived in Durban their knowledge was fairly limited about the area. All we were told was not to go out at night as it was not safe for white people. Even during the day do not wear a watch or show your phone. When I asked about groceries or getting a sim card they didn'r really know where I should go. Eventually a porter told me the best place to go which was only a 5 minute walk. The restaurant and staff in there were superb. The meals were excellent. And the prices were so cheap compared to the UK.
Proximity to the beach, did a lot of complimentary specials for Comrades participants. Fantastic breakfast options. Staff were polite and welcoming. Would highly recommend the hotel
Rooms were excellent, outstanding value. Located right alongside beach. Staff extremely helpful.
Nice Place
We enjoyed our stay at the Edward Hotel. Very nice staff and great room and terrific breakfast
Feedback
The customer service was very disappointing, it did not seem like people cared or were keen about meeting our needs as customers of the hotel. Maybe a refresher course would be beneficial. I would like to commend the quality of the food as well as the service of the chefs, no issues there and great customer service from the team that were making our breakfast and how they deal with us as customers. The rest of the hotel employees can learn a thing or two from them. The cleanliness is also on point and commendable. If there are many people or peak periods, maybe the number of employees should be increased to accommodate the increase in demand as that directly affects the service levels. Lastly, maybe alternative power during load shedding is an option to consider too?
Super amazing service from all staff! From the reception to the restaurant to the service staff. Excellent excellent service!
World class hotel
Excellent service, food and room service. Efficient, friendly and speedy service. Highly recommended. Definitely going back to stay here.
Service is excellent, hotel is aged but good value for money Don’t look safe to walk outside at nights Use hotel transport preferably Would probably book hotels a bit north of this hotel next time
perfect
it was amazing
perfect
It was so nice and convenient. The staff was super friendly.
Very noisy second night with the neighbouring room having a party and singing until 1.30am! Otherwise good service and great breakfast
It was a wow. I will come back with two other families. Will want three rooms with inter connecting doors
Peaceful stay
Staff very helpful, rooms were clean, good control over guests movement (COVID compliant), staff put guests first. Shall return once more.
Cheated
Tell me ,did you pay the hotel the R1899 I payed. Do I report the matter to hellow peter
Property is well located with friendly staff. Parking is an issue although theres overflow parking as a female walking in the middle of the night to where parking is back to the hotel is not really safe. The place needs to be disinfected there were quite a lot of unfriendly creatures crawling in the hallways.
The aircon works fone but its very noisy. It wouldnt be a bad idea to have a microwave and a kettle in guest room i think.
I STAYED HERE 2 WEEKS AGO AND STILL HAVE NOT RECIEVED MY REFUND FOR 3 UN-USED NIGHTS. NO CONTACT FROM MARRIOT OR THE HOTEL!???? THEY WILL NOT RETURN MY EMAILS. I WOULD NOT STAY HERE.
Good family time
Location good and staff friendly and helpful. Need to do something about undercover parking, it’s a letoff. Food good and can be improved
It was so amazing, the staff, the rooms cleanliness, linen, the food everything was awesome.
It was excellent
Dangerous town
We were robbed both of us just a block from the hotel in daylight on a Sunday morning. 3 people were killed/ stabbed to death in that same area while we stayed there for 5 days. Durbin is very very dangerous.
Very staff.
Good
It was good. View was amazing.
Even though I call the manager Belinda to confirm the reservation because we where arriving at 5:30 am , when we arrived the reservation has been cancelled, I was told that it was because I didn’t pay in advance, which Belinda never told me I was supposed to do They have their own driver and will not call a taxi for me. The driver gave us a price and then told us that it was per person. The food was good and the room ok
Durban
Staff at hotel very attentive. Room I was in was on 1st floor and noisy otherwise very clean and comfortable.
Better later than never
1st room was not what we paid for but were up graded later in our stay
Bad holiday
The was no water in the morning for two days at 7am to 8am.when ii switch on the lights in the bathroom there was a strange sound and I had to switch off I reported it but the sound persisted my whole stay.... Really it was frustrating.
Location was central to our efforts in the Durban area.
Ants in first bedroom, reluctant to give us another room. Took ages to get free Wifi. Cracked & repaired toilet. Conference hotel so always busy. Busy & noisy on beachfront. Poor research on my part as we did not feel that safe after dark,
They had no water the day we checked out and expected us to take our towels to neighboring hotel to shower....highly annoying and inconvenient! They also charged us for parking and were not aware that your website said free parking - pls clarify with them on that. Lastly we thought breakfast was included but it’s R195 extra per person.
it was just perfect next to all the facilities I needed, next to the bus picking point, ushaka marine world and shoprite checkers where I got my snacks. The place very perfect, the food was good and I must say it was not expensive at all next time I am definitely using the same resort.
Beautiful
U enjoyed everything overall
Great stay. excellent venue. Stayed there previously.
Jean at reception made every effort to accommodate us on every request!
First time to Durban
Overall we had a pleasant stay. The restaurant food was below standard and the general menu was not very appealing.
Excellent location, staff very friendly and accommodating, the service is just a bit slow. Great breakfast choice. I would happily stay here again.
awesome
Amazing trip
I needed a break as i was fatigue, and don't regret my choice of location
pleasant atmosphere good service at breakfast well reccfomended
Bad smell and no peace.
This hotel has deteriorated since I was last there in 2006.In my room, there was bad smell and the housekeeping staff knock at your door at 8:00 am.No peace.
nice right at the beach
had a wonderful stay. friendly staff and amazing food.
Delightful stay
The hotel has amazing staff, services including the pool and gym, a short drive/ walk away from the great uShaka Marine world and facing the ocean which is fantastic. I loved every moment.
Good hotel
It was good
They did their best to make you feel at home which was great. I didn’t get rooms that I booked and had to settle for what they had. This was a bit annoying since I booked months in advance. I didn’t like the fact that one would have to wait longer for table water during dinner. As much as the staff is friendly an approachable I was given conflicting information most of the time.
Nyathi
It was an amazing stay at the hotel as the service and facilities are great!
it s been a terrible experience.
Perfect weekend getaway
Party party party! But the hotel and staff were great and really took care of us well!
Nice Services, Good experience, Takes me back to when i was a GM at a lodge. Love the stay.
Great but breakfast wasn't included
Was not made aware that breakfast wasn't included
sucked
The booking was a messed up. Although we were a travelling party of 4, we found only one room booked for us. This resulted in 2 members of my party having to sleep on the floor. The hotel stated that the system had booked only one room, but my booking confirmation reflected 2 rooms for 4 people, with twin beds. Other than this mix up, our stay fine. Could have been better.
Disappointment
The Hotel was fully booked according to the Trade Association that hosted the symposium which I attended. I also called them and they were fully booked. I tried through Expedia and I got a booking! Great for Expedia! Some of the delegates could only access their rooms about two hours late. The one woman had a man enter her room unexpectedly. This guy was extremely apologetic but there was an administrative blunder, the hotel gave two guests the same room, both with access via a "key card"! I did not hang a "do not disturb" card on the outside of the hotel room, but the cleaners frequently knocked on my door from quite early to enquire if they cannot start cleaning yet. While the symposium was in process some staff members were chatting directly outside the door. I do not know why it was necessary, because they were standing almost next to each other, but they were shouting at each other which created a irritating disturbance inside the symposium hall. Wine and sparkling wine that should have been presented cold was room temperature. The Hall for the Gala dinner was only ready 40 minutes late. I had a "telephone" item on my bill of almost one hour while I did not use the telephone at all.
excellent
It was so good the services and the staff are friendly
Amazing Service
Our stay was pleasant. Booked a Standard room and got upgraded to a Family room at no extra cost.
Old-world charm - value for money!
The service from reception, the porters and housekeeping was friendly and efficient, but the service from the restaurant in the morning on the veranda was a bit slow. Overall though, a wonderful stay in a beautiful hotel!
Plesent stay
Good place, very friendly staff especially at guest services
Grand Old Lady still a jewel in the Golden Mile
Best staff ever. They accommodated our every request, friendly, helpful and did everything possible to make us feel welcome and comfortable
Location and my needs
Location to the beach and taxi distances to my destinations made it central. Staff were pleasant but at times need to focus on sharp delivery, quick and efficient presentation.
Location, location, location
Central to The beaches, on marine Parade with access to north coast, inland to Westville and the Berea. Clean facilities and friendly staff responded well to my requests
Perfect
Everything was perfect it was my second visit and I will definitely go back again again and gain
The lobby and restaurant retain the feel of an elegant, classy hotel, although the rooms have been modernized and are comfortable. The staff in the restaurant and lobby were friendly and helpful. It is conveniently located for visiting the beach but getting to other locations in the city requires a cab, uber or other transpiration.
Service excellence
The stay was worth repeating.
Convenient hotel
It was good as I enjoyed the services given by porters. At the same time it is so inconveniencing the fact that breakfast is not automatically included on the booking.
Nice Hotel / Busy
We stayed one night over the New Year's holidays and the beach was extremely busy. We ended up staying in our hotel room because we don't like crowds. We had come from the Protea Umlanga which was extremely nice. You could tell the difference between the properties, downtown was older. We would have liked it better if we had stayed there during another time versus the holiday.
Very clean
Amazing!!!
Good service and clean
It was good, convenient and well placed to travel around because public transport including taxis were plenty. I will however not recommend it for stay during peak period like the Xmas festive period as the beach becomes too crowded and noisy
it was good i enjoy it to the fullest and can recommend others.
worst room . This is not a four star hotel
AMAZING . . .
Excellent
I often visit durban, and I have stayed in most of the hotels along the beachfront this hostel provides excellent service. My car was parked for me every time I used it, even at 13 am my vehicle was parked for me. I will stay at this hotel again . Thanks to the pleasant hotel staff.
Great overall - but poor Wifi
Good
My stay was excellent and I will definitely come back, bit concerned about the quality of food though, mostly main dish, I was not impressed at all. I invited my employees for dinner about 12
ok
pathetic internet solutions
the stay was amazing and enjoy it with my family.
Close to beach
Well located by the beach. Dated rooms and hotel but fair price and clean.
I didn't like it. I stayed only for one day with the purpose of sleeping, since I arrived from a trip of two days without sleeping... They kept knocking on my door all the time. After I put a sign of do not disturb they just called me, which is the same as knocking in my door. The corridor was noisy. I was happy to leave!
Great stay in Durban
Just one night, but I really enjoyed it. Great food and some of the nicest staff I've ever met!
Memorable
Fantastic stay had most memorable birthday surprise prepared by the hotel management/staff Sonwabile and Jean you ladies are wonderful.... thank you
Sketchy hotel, but with great sea views
When I checked in the clerk tried to get me to pay more for a sea view, when my reservation clearly stated "partial sea view" as a minimum. Good thing I had a printed copy of the reservation. We got our sea view but the clerk was rude, too. The restaurant food (menu) is good and a good value. But the kitchen is incredibly slow....30 minutes to get a wrap and salad. The service at the morning buffet is dismal. The hotel gave us key that stopped working on purpose after 18 hours. They said this was for security...but they should tell you if you need to get a new key each day. The furnishings in the room were somewhat dirty. And all potential visitors should know that this hotel is on the edge of the red light district and each the beachfront walk is not safe after dark. You can tell that the hotel was once very nice, but it is not even 3 stars now.
Five days at the Edward
The Edward has an unique old world atmosphere, attentive and friendly service, and breakfast on the verandah used to be a special attraction. It still is, but it is not as practicable as it used to be. I'd like to suggest that when staff are asked why the hotel is called 'the Edward', they should be able to recount some of the relevant history. None seemed to know if Edward, Prince of Wales, stayed there.
Ability to be so much better
Old run down building. Staff were poor upon checkin. Had a letter delivered the day of arrival which they lost !!! Only to find it a couple of hours later. Room safe had incorrect instructions,so didn't open. Durban is great, but go elsewhere plenty of choice
We enjoyed sitting on the balcony and watch the passersby.
average
This is my personal opinion. we got to the hotel at 2pm and the room was not ready. a few minutes wait was not a problem. there was a terrible smell in the bathroom. We asked the cleaner to please clean it again and we even offered her something extra. was never resolved. We possibly wasted more perfume in the bathroom than we would have used on ourself in two weeks. When we booked this stay it never mentioned anything about breakfast been an extra. On arrival we asked the receptionist and her comment was that we only sell rooms and breakfast is extra, so I asked her where does is say that the stay is hotel only and her bold and bland response was can you get hold of the website you booked through. It was a wonderful way to start a holiday. to be honest , would not stay there again.
A two star masquerading as a four star
There were constant errors in service from the car not being delivered on time; at breakfast coffee and tea not served unless asked for. Similarly on room service the coffee and teas were never replaced until asked. Making the beds was a long and drawn out event. The beds would be stripped and made up hours later. In the bathroom there would be one toilet roll at any one time and we had to ask for a roll to be replaced.
Nice break away
Overall very nice
Hotel in no go area for European travellers
South Africa is a beautiful country, but unfortunately for the European traveller there are many areas that are not safe to visit or stay in. It's a shame to say but the Hotel Protea Edward is situated in one of these areas. Right out side the hotel are children's paddling pools, a fair, and a massive amount of locals hell bent on partying. When leaving the hotel the atmosphere is intimidating. The litter and rubbish was so overbearing we wondered if any of these locals had any respect for their beautiful country. Being European you really stick out. In fact we heard on the local radio that someone was stabbed and killed on the beach in central Durban on the last night of our stay. The noise and children screaming, with enjoyment, goes on well into the night, and because its all happening so close to the hotel, and the noise is so loud, the rooms are far from relaxing. We were told by some locals later on our that we should have stayed either to the south or north of Durban because the areas are far more friendly. Durban city centre is worth seeing but this can be done in a 3 hour tour, so unlike us, there is no point in staying in the centre. During our stay at the hotel we had an horrific experience (Expedia and Marriot were made aware). The hotel management promised us massive compensation but unfortunately on our return to the UK they changed their mind. It was my fault because I wish I had recorded the conversation with the management. Hotel lacked European standards.
The pace at which check in is done takes longer than it should. There is no parking out front and I had problems getting into their parking as I can only pay for parking once checked in.
Very nice.nice service from the hotel staff more especially Nicholus he made us feel special
Nice Hotel, Marriott Group
The hotel is centrally located between South Beach and North Beach. Directly across the promenade and beach. Close to many restaurants and 25 minutes’ walk to the Soccer and Rugby Stadium in North beach side. Great location for those walkers and there are places to rent bikes on the promenade.
Comfortable, affordable hotel on the beach. Easy access to central Durban and North Coast. Good for business trip.
Central location, overlooking the beach
I spent 4 nights at the Protea Hotel, Edward. The hotel exceeded my expectations, it is centrally located with friendly staff, and a good bar and restaurant. The only real negative is the permanent 'Fun World' located opposite the hotel which was somewhat noisy if you want to relax on the hotel balcony during the day or early evening.
Good visit to Durban for Comrades
Very friendly and helpful staff. Seafront area is safe to walk if you're sensible and has plenty of restaurants. Is opposite fun fair so can hear music, but sea view is wonderful.
Old school promenade hotel
I stayed here for 2 nights, 20th and 21st May 2015. Was looking for a high quality beach hotel to treat myself. Certainly the Edward is handy for the beach, but to my eye a hotel in this category needs to keep it's room style a little more up to date as mine felt a little bit well, dated as opposed to a conscious colonial style which would actuall. Also there was a degree of inconsistency in terms of the quality of staff- all the doormen, security guards, the porters and some of the reception staff were excellent but a few working on reception and in the breakfast serving could have been more attentive and engaged more with the guests. I had a corner room which meant that I had only a "half sea view". In general I liked this hotel very much, and the rate I obtained was good value. The public areas of the hotel are definitely strong points. I ordered room service once during my stay. It was good food and arrived promptly. Breakfast buffet was reasonable, but there was nothing like the degree of choice or quality that I would have expected from a hotel in this category. WIFI worked reasonably well but dropped out on a few occasions. Reception staff gave me generous access to the business area two evenings on the trot. I would single out 2 individuals for praise- the security guard who insisted on providing me a personal escort to a nearby ATM (sorry for not spotting his name) and Johnny on porterage services for organising tours and advice and generally making sure I was okay.
Royal Treatment
One of the best hotels I've stayed at in a long time! Staff is friendly and treated us like royalty! Will be looking out for Protea Hotels from now on, no matter where I go!
perfect holiday
it was a good holiday as the hotel is close to the ocean and a walking distance to ushaka marine world
Superb
My daughter and myself felt so comfortable and safe at this hotel.
Not your best option in the neighborhood
I stayed two weeks at Protea Edward while in town for work. I had requested an upper-floor room, but when I arrived, I was put into a room on the 2nd floor. It absolutely reeked of cigarette smoke, despite this being a non-smoking property (theoretically). I couldn't breathe the air. So they moved me up to a room on the top floor (it was apparently available all along), and it at least did not stink. Service at the hotel was pretty bad overall. I left notes each day asking for the coffee packets to please be replenished, but days passed and I never got any coffee until I left the empty container on the bed with a note that included arrows pointing at the empty coffee slots. I went to the hotel restaurant one night and was completely ignored (it was open, though, and I was there at a normal dinner hour). I was ignored when I arrived, so I seated myself. I was ignored for another 45 minutes, so I went inside to get a drink and a menu. It was at least another 30 minutes before a waiter grudgingly came out and informed me that he would help me "only because it's not busy tonight" (I was the only customer!). And to top it all off, when I went to check out o the last day, the hotel had magically hiked the rate up significantly from the rate I had booked. So I'd say this hotel is a gigantic fail all around. I do not recommend it at all. There are much nicer options in the area.
Fabulous
everything was wonderful and the view of the sea, boardwalk, swimming pools and ALL right from our balcony was....was breathtaking!
The hotel was very nice and I felt safe at the hotel as a solo traveler. The area around the hotel was safe as long as you stayed along the beach front area. The hotel offered 500 mb of free wifi a day and any balance seems to carry over from one day to the next. Enough for the average traveler. You can purchase additional data too. The buffet breakfast was very good with a wide selection of foods. The dinner did have a wide selection, but I suspect could be a bit hit and miss depending on your tastes. The porter was very friendly and helpful, but seemed a bit overly concerned that I needed to take a tour.

Everything about my stay was beautiful
