Nice but ...
Wished they would have told us we needed a reservation to eat at any of the restaurants at the hotel. Check in was a little hectic but efficient. The room was very nice and comfortable.
The most dirtiest 4 star hotel I’ve ever stayed
At check in, the staffs handles the luggage for Japanese visitors ONLY, not anyone else. All 3 onsite restaurants serve reservations only, no walk-ins, and the staffs doesn’t tell you at all until you found out yourselves. No in-room slippers besides the one wears within the hotel. No hair brush at all, there’s only one in the public onsen area which was terribly dirty that used by everyone. The outdoor onsen was okay, but the panoramic onsen has water keep dripping down to your head from the ceiling because of the steams. The room is the smallest comparing to other onsen hotels, the TV is very small, the bathroom is extremely small and dirty, the shower curtain has dead bug, stains, mildew and mold on it. The buffet breakfast is very poor and simply me, not much varieties, plus 85% of stuffs are vegetarian, the restaurant closes at 10am, but they STOP refilling any of the food trays anymore from 9am at one of the mornings during my stay. This is totally should not be rated as a 4 star hotel, you feel like been staying at a 2.5 star ryokan!!! No services and not clean. Will never ever staying here again and totally not recommended.
Restaurant manager does NOT dare to manage noisy diners who were obviously a disturbing to others in the same limited space. Not the right attitude even though the customers are fellow Japanese.
Very quiet and safe. Traditional Japanese atmosphere. We love it very much.
Beautiful onsen. And so many different choices.
Beautiful, restorative… serene.
Onsen is good
How do I put this? I wish I could stay there for more days. It was so relaxing and worry free staying there. Room was clean, staff were top notch, all the details were just perfect!
Great hot spring in Sumeikan after each meal
It was wonderful stay at Sumeikan and enjoyed three different public bath with my wife. The stffs are friendly and it was nice experience for twin beds and Japanese style hot table with tadami floor. However, my room was mountain view and we were nat able to enjoy brookview this time.
It was our first staying at a Ryokan, we enjoyed our stay because our rooms are big and comfortable. The morning bath at the open air bath during sub zero temperature was my most unforgettable experience. Would definitely visit again when I go back to Japan.
We booked the traditional suite room, it was so big and comfy, the only thing I really didn’t like is the hair dryer, it is the very old one that fixed on the wall with very low heat and air came out. We asked the hotel for any portable hairdryer but they didn’t have it. For woman like me with long hair, you better bring your own hairdryer, if not you probably need to dry your hair with at least 20mins just like me. I will come again if they change the hair dryer, if not I believe gero have lots of other options too
I love the Suimeikan! This is the 5th time I've stayed at the hotel. Their onsen is THE best and they have three great onsen options. Our room was clean and spacious. Love the traditional tatami room. Also, their breakfast buffet is really delicious, especially if you like Japanese breakfast - although their butter roll is amazing!
French restaurant Barden Barden was horrible and they served unknown food of nationality.
Awesome hotel stay
Clean room and comfortable stay. Hot spring was awesome!
Outstanding
We loved the Suimeken. We were warmly welcomed upon entering, and a friendly staff guided us around since it’s a fairly large compound. We were very happy with our room and the facilities all around. Great place to come unwind.
Large all amenities style resort
The beautiful grand old lady - we had a Japanese style room which find out the type of the room was not for everyone- hard to get up from floor since we are seniors. But other than that like having personal guide to take to your room after checking in was a huge help. Restaurants and breakfast buffets were good. It’s an old Japanese hotel which will give you great old Japanese hospitality but not modern ones. We had good experience.
This place has everything you need in a full service onsen resort hotel, and it has the history to go with it. Great place for families, couple or solo travellers. Easy access to Gero station. Multiple restaurants in the hotel if you don't wish to head out. 3 different baths, including one that is open 24hrs. The size of the hotel (biggest in Gero) means there is a lack of intimacy and privacy that you get from a smaller, more family-run onsen ryokan. Also, it can get busy with a lot of people moving around, but it's also lively because of that. Probably the best breakfast buffet I've had in an onsen hotel. I'll probably try another ryokan if I'm in Gero again but this makes a great first-time stay.
Room is clean and staffs are very nice.
This is the best place for onsen. We love staying here as the staff is friendly and helpful.
Amazing service, great breakfast, excellent location, would stay again!
Great experience
The onsens are very good. Location was good as well, walking distance to gero attractions. I also left lmy personal device when i left and the staff courier it back to me very promptly upon notifying them.
Walkable to Gero station. There's shuttle bus to and fro station but there's schedule. Check with the schedule.
Excellent hotel!
The room was very nice, spacious, and clean. I loved how the shower & bath had its own separate room in the bathroom. The multiple onsens were nice - 3 separate onsem areas spaced throughout the hotel.
Absolutely incredible! It went above and beyond my expectations with very friendly staff, a beautiful room with a gorgeous view of the mt behind the station, and a large array of delicious food at the breakfast buffet. Additionally, we had access to all three onsen within the hotel for free, with none of them feeling overcrowded and all well maintained with beautiful designs.
Very nice hot-spring, especially the panorama and outdoor ones
The hot spring is good. Though the hotel a bit old, it is still clean.
In general, facility conditions were good but breakfast quality is not good. No worth to pay.
Japansese dinner meal quality was kind of mediocre. We actually asked for a change to Chinese food on our 2nd night, which was surprisingly good. Onsen quality was excellent. Breakfast was also good too.
Everything you want in hot spring- Japanese style
japanese style room much labor involve Everything you want in Onsen is there. 3 include open onsen on level 1 , multi pools plus sauna on Level 3 and great view onsen on Level 9. Things to consider , gym and covered pool there is charges ,wifi not available on level 4 , there onsen tax not include in room rate.
There are many great and historical arts. Very traditional hotel. Good hot spring.
Overall clean and comfort experience. However, the WiFi network was very unstable.
nicd onsen hotel, very good and plenty of choices for breakfast
The hotel is huge and self contained with 3 buildings, 3 onsen facilities and 3-4 restaurants. Just 2-3 minutes walk from the JR station very conveniently located. Strangely enough, the town itself appears dead with most restaurants closed during this winter/spring season.
Onsen is good But no dinner offered if dinner was not booked
It was awesome to stay in the hotel! The food was nice and overall service was incredible
Close to JR - 2mins walk.. Also like the fact that they have shuttle bus to the JR. .
Great hotel! We stayed in the deluxe room and it was very spacious, with a separate area with chairs, balcony with chairs, a separate changing area, mini pantry and separate toileting and shower area. Dinner in room was 9 course and very extravagant. Buffet breakfast was great too with plenty of western and japanese selection. 3 onsens was too much, we only stay one night and had to try all 3. Even dessert at lobby cafe was good, tried the parfait and it was yummy. Staff was very attentive, friendly and helpful. Overall very nice stay.
No Comments....We have an excellent stay at Suimeikan
hotel is ok but personal belongings is better to be kept when they are cleaning up the room.
Wifi only available in the lobby.....not in the room. Reception staff far from friendly....almost downright rude.
Okay for a traditional Japanese Onsen hotel, but my wife was not very comfortable about all the 3 Onsens in this hotel. The Onsen on the ground floor was not well covered, so we can actually see all males having Onsen in the open from the hotel room or common walkway at the upper floor. Also level 3 and level 9 onsen one side of it is with many glass panel facing the opposite hotel and facilities which make it not comfortable for certain Asian travelers....
Amazing place to be at with family!
Our family absolutely loved the place, the hotel staff were very nice and friendly, all the onsen pools were clean and well kept, and the room was beautiful. The location of the hotel was perfect as well, right in between the town and the train station. No qualms at all with the place.
Two Thumbs Up!
The staff at the ryokan were extremely helpful and attentive. We got an informative crash course guide by one of the staff who even sent us up to our doorstep. The room was surprisingly cosy for my family of four adults, besides being very clean and aesthetically-speaking.
Great place for a family vacations.
The place is located right beside the train station and has a beautiful view of the little town. All the staff are friendly and wonderful! We absolutely enjoyed our stay there.
An experience to Japanese hospitality
This place was our retreat in the middle of the trip. From the moment we step into the lobby, there were staffs who lined at the front door and bow to greeting us! So stunning my grand daughter jumped up and one of the staff couldn't hold his laughing :) We stay in a superior room with futon, Japanese - Western room. The room locate in 7th floor and I believe the whole floor was non- smoking only. I have bad back pain and couldn't sleep on floor, that no problem as the room has twin beds plus for Japanese feel there was a tatami place for seating and if your party more than 2 persons, the extra persons can sleep on futon in that area. A young staff lead us to our room, took all our heavy bags and politely refuse our help!' The view in my room was perfect: it looked out to the station instead of the bridge and the town. However, I didnt heard much noise from the train as we were on higher floor and the view to the mountain at the morning was beautifulenough! Our room rate including breakfast, Suimeikan's breakfast was good on itself: There was Japanese dishes as well as Western dishes, plenty of choice! I was fed to my neck :) I liked our stay at Suimeikan a lot, what's an excellent typical Japanese hospitallity to experienced! Not only the staffs bowed when we ready to leave, the lady owner herself came to the shuttle bus to wave good bye to her guests!Hope that I will have a chance to return to Suimeikan in the future!
Great stay! 3 Onsen experience.
I and my husband spend great time at Suimeikan. The hotel was clean and stuff was very friendly. We also enjoyed an awesome traditional Japanese dinner and great selection of breakfast. 3 different onsen/hot springs were so nice and we were very relaxed. One suggestion is that they probably need more English/other language signs. There are quite few overseas travellers who haven't had much onsen experience. It will be helpful for them to understand some rules and remove the confusion.
Well trained employees & Excellent experiences
The excellent place to visit if you are looking for the old fashion Japanese hot springs with the mordern facilities. It is worth mention that the employees are outstanding. The garden located in front of lobby area is gorgeous. The three hot springs baths are well maintained and spacey. All of us truly enjoyed our stay at Suimeikan. I will definitely recommend this hotel to other pepole.
Not too bad
Compare to the other excellent hot spring hotel we stayed, this one is a pass. The hotel is quite old, so the toilet and room facilities are not in very good condition. It is also a place for group tours, so it is not a very quiet hot spring hotel as I expected.
Nice dinner in room
We enjoyed the half board package because we have very fresh and delicious Japanese food served dish by dish in the room. Staff are very friendly. The hotel reception also has a mandarins speaking staff which is a huge bonus!
Good
Quiet place to enjoy the onsen. The food (dinner set) at the Japanese restaurant is not so good as expected.
Exceptional onsen hotel
Very efficient and excellent service.
Hot spring is good ! However, we reserve a non -smoking room, but when we walked in , there was a strong smoking smell. The staff should have introduced more about the room facilities n air- con button.
Comfortable, wonderful experience. Perfect hotel for everyone.
Comfortable, wonderful experience. Perfect hotel for everyone.
great choice in Gero
Good location. Massage staffs are very kind and polite. Professional skill.
Well maintained hotel with onset
The best hotel I ever stayed
Great service start right at the entrance, staff are smart and make me feel very welcomed. Although they have a very long history, but all the space and facilities are very well maintained totally not feel aged at all. Food are good too, it is only pity that we could not try the Japanese dinner as we did not book it early (if you see this, remember to book your dinner early, we try to went out for dinner but quite most of the good restaurant do not open of weekdays so don't trust google too much). I am also regret that we didn't book two nights in a row (our pervious one is 40% cheaper, but totally not worth it). And if it is within your budget, try book our room, the room it super spacious and have very great view (it can totally host 4 will still plenty of space to toss your things around). Looking forward to my next visit to Suimeikan.
Hotel is old but still maintained in good condition. Friendly staff

The hotel is big and could cater to big crowds without having the guests feeling overcrowding. The 3 onsens are spread over 3 different blocks of building but very walkable within indoor (hence no concern about rain or cold weather). Buffet breakfast was excellent with good spread of western and Japanese cuisine. Parking onsite is complimentary and the hotel is walkable to small town with eateries, shops and cafes. The option to have western and Japanese beddings in the room is good especially when travelling with elderly. The young ones can experience sleeping on tatami while the western bedding provides comfort for the elderly.
