Liz is very helpful in providing information.
We really enjoyed our stay at Shakespeare House. Nathan and Liz are incredible hosts and the other staff very friendly and helpful. They provide excellent breakfasts which set you up well for the day and provides an opportunity to chat with the hosts and other guests. We were all comparing outings from the previous day and learning of new activities to do. We extended our stay an extra night to see more of this beautiful area! We look forward to staying here again.
The property was perfect for resting after exploring around Te Anau. The host was engaging and gave terrific recommendations for the local area, as well as in our next destination in Queenstown.
Canned Fruit for Breakfast
Disappointing
Check-in was good. Room was very small, which was not a problem. It was very clean, but poorly equipped. The room was for two people, but there was only one chair. There is no air conditioning, and portable fans are not available. Wi-Fi was fantastic!
I can’t say enough good things about Shakespeare House! We stayed here after coming to Te Anau late from the Milford Sound area. With notice, the owners made arrangements for us to check in after-hours. The room was clean and very comfortable. Breakfast was delicious, and the owners were so kind and gave us some great tips for what to see and do during the next leg of our journey. Highly recommend this B&B!
Great location! And the breakfast was pretty healthy!
The hosts were incredibly friendly and welcoming. We had just finished the Milford Track and it was the perfect place to spend the night! Very clean, dry, and overall just lovely.
Has everything you need. It's very clean.
Great stay. Very comfortable. Owners were wonderful and helpful.
When staying at the Shakespeare house, you feel like you’re staying with family. We loved how friendly and helpful everyone was. Perfect location and comfortable for our short but sweet stop in Te Anau :)
We loved our stay here. Our room, although not that big, was very clean. Slightly unusual set up though with the rooms all off a long communal sitting area. An easy 10 minute walk into the centre of Te Anau where there is a good selection of places to eat, plus a large supermarket.
Shakespeare House B&B is a fabulous place to stay in Te Anau. The accommodation was comfortable, breakfast was great, and Nathan and Liz were friendly and helpful hosts. I have coeliac disease and they catered for me with a choice of gluten free cereals & bread for toast kept separately with a dedicated gluten free toaster that is not available for general use. Highly recommended.
Fantastic hosts!
Great rooms though on the tiny side with a tiny teeny bathroom.
We had a wonderful stay. Liz and her husband were awesome. We felt welcome and comfortable.
Great hosts, modern interior.
The friendliest staff!
Homely modern motel/bnb - perfect!
Perfect stay
Lovely BnB very close to town center. Breakfast included. Large rooms, comfy beds and great hosts!
Location is great
Paradise in the southern alps.
The Shakespeare House is a delightful B&B with the most gracious and knowledgeable hosts. The unit was spotless, we were able to use the kitchen in the evening and the location makes access easy to the best Te Anau has to offer.
It was great
Very friendly and accommodating. Good breakfast. Coffee in the room.
The property has character a mixture of the old and new . Great location easy to walk to restaurants .Hospitality by the owners is excellent.
We really loved the hospitality from Liz and Nathan. The cooked breakfast was excellent. The only feedback would be a bit more space to place toiletries for the bathroom sink.
Walking distance to everywhere - lake, town. Easy parking. Very well presented - spotlessly clean with high standard of decoration and furnishings. Incredibly friendly and welcoming owners :)
I would stay he again. The owners are very nice, the room was clean and the breakfast is great.
The hosts were amazing. So kind and helpful. Will definitely be back.
We feel it does not give value for money. Would like to point out that even if we are not allowed to check in before the allotted time the least you can expect is the use of a washroom especially when you have driven over two hundred Kms!
The B&B is lovely and well appointed. The owners were super helpful and very accommodating. The location is perfect to walk around town and for day trips to Milford and Kepler track. Highly recommended it.
Shakespeare House was such a lovely place to stay. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom was super clean and the room itself was quite spacious. Nathan was extremely helpful in providing us tips and updates about our trip to Milford Sound, even giving us brochures and recommending scenic stops along the way. Breakfast was delicious and there were so many food options. Having breakfast available made it a great start to our day! All in all, a lovely place to call home for a day. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking to stay in Te Anau.
Quiet location and comfortable beds. Owners were very friendly and accommodating to our schedule. Breakfast was great!
Great place in a beautiful town. The owners are fantastic and gave us great tips for sightseeing!
The folks who run this place are warm and gracious and give really good advice.
On first look the property doesn’t appear to be of a high standard. But don’t be fooled the managers are lovely, very helpful & welcoming. The rooms have been refurbished are very clean and comfortable. We would highly recommend 👍
The hosts were very welcoming & informative. Te Anau is a beautiful town, with lovely views of the mountains & a good base for visiting Milford Sound. The room we stayed in was clean & comfortable. The breakfast was very good with delicious muffins too!
A delightful B and B that offers a wonderful atmosphere. The owners run a wonderful business and work very hard to ensure that guests are cared for in a very nonintrusive, however very helpful manner. Breakfast is included and freshly cooked. Highly recommended trip to Doubtful Sound. One day needed.
If you are thinking about going to Te Anau, this place is a MUST! The rooms were beautiful, super clean, cosy and private. The host here are friendly, helpful and cook a great breakfast. There is no where else that I would book in this area.
Great stay with friendly welcoming hosts. We enjoyed Te Anau, and it was great being able to walk into town. The cooked breakfast was delicious
A great stop of on our travels, We would definitely return to Shakespeare house! The hosts are extremely friendly & welcoming, and were able to accommodate our slightly later check-in time without a hitch. Highly recommended!
Good location, Great hosts.
Hosts very welcoming, friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Great location, very handy to town centre, lake, restaurants and bars. Room recently renovated, very clean and good heating. Lovely breakfast and awesome service. Enjoyed our stay.
Overpriced for the room we were in.
Stayed in the room called "Much to do about nothing"... this describes it well, Extremely small room with room only for a bed and the small cabinet for tea and coffee with the smallest en suite I have ever seen. Has a common area for sitting outside the room in a large conservatory outside these 4-5 rooms , this would be great for a group booking to use, but a bit off putting in the evening for a couple especially with nowhere else to sit in the room we had. Host however were very pleasant, room was clean and recently decorated, bathroom look original and old.
Lovely glassed in verandah to enjoy the sun. Fridge space available. Good recommendations from our hosts.
We stayed at Shakespeare House for 2 nights. The room was spotlessly clean and the bed comfortable. A bit more storage /shelf space would have helped and the walls were a little thin(we could hear people talking in the next room). The owners could not have been more helpful or personable.
Room walls had large windows onto common area and were made of plaster
Highly recommended
Liz and Nathan are great hosts. Easy walk to town and 100 yards from lake. Had a great stay here for 2 nights and would highly recommend as a base for visiting the Milford and doubtful sound.
If your looking to be pampered in luxury accommodations, this is not your place. Clean room at budget price with no frills. Be close to Milford sound so you can beat all the tour buses before they arrive at noon. Owner is nice and informative. Limited internet.
The place makes me think of the worse youth hostels I have visited. This is worse than any of them. The bathroom has mold and needs repairs. The "view" is of a crowded parking lot. No privacy. Worn carpet. Old cramped room. The owner is the rudest I have ever met. I gave every other place where we stayed in New Zealand a 5 star rating. The place is a new low. Whether in Kazakhstan, Europe or North America, it has my lowest rating.
Bathroom way to small and super plain. Room size - too narrow. Need to use a common refrigerator. Great to be able to use Motel kitchen, but would have liked a small fridge and microwave in room. Owner great, Friendly atmosphere
Had a lovely 2 night stay here while we went to Milford Sound. Liz was lovely & very helpful & breakfast was delicious. Our room was clean & had everything we could need. I would definitely recommend a stay here. Thank you Liz & your team
Lovely lounge overlooking the garden, beautifully. Cooked breakfAst served with a smile. Very helpful hosts.
Good location with very friendly and helpful staff
Room (ensuite) very nice, clean with good ammieneties, breakfast very good. WiFi somewhat problematical during our stay.
Great breakfast, clean rooms. Room size was big. Includes private toilet and shower
We truly appreciated the Shakespeare House staff -- they go above and beyond!!
Very friendly and helpful staff. Kitchen is fully equipped and open to use. Small room and cold water and hot water is separated so a little bit inconvenient.
Proprietor was very helpful and friendly. Room was newly renovated, clean and comfortable. Breakfast was excellent. No worries here.
More Modern than Stratford on Avon
Loved our stay. Very comfortable.
Great breasfast and cozy hotel
Nice hotel with very friendly owners / staff. Room was rather small, with no closet and tiny refrigerator. Great breakfast cooked by owner. Friendly atmosphere, with common areas that invite meeting other guests.
Wonderful and friendly, delicious home cooked breakfast. New owners are still renovating. A firmer bed would have made our stay even better
Lovely place
Great stay and lovely breakfast!
1. Outdated and cold washroom: The sink had two separate faucets for hot and cold water. The night of our stay was cold and washing up in a cold washroom was very unpleasant. The washroom lacked any heating facility (no floor heating or other heating appliance in the washroom). Additionally, the toilet in our washroom leaked when flushed - wetting our socks. 2. Limited Wifi without notice. When checking in, we were told of an unadvertised WiFi policy that limits the use of the B&B Internet to 300MB per device (with each room eligible to use two devices). The two-device limitation was mentioned in Expedia at the time of our booking but the 300MB quota was not at the time of our booking. There was extremely poor cell network reception inside the room and so we asked the hosts to receive an additional 300MB, since it seems arbitrarily insufficient. We were declined and given and explanation that it ought to be sufficient because all guests share the same limited connection.
excellent location, owners are lovely and helpful, the room is comfortable but the bathroom is a bit dated, look like there is an undergoing renovation. breakfast is nice and included. Te anau is quite lovely and a good stop before Milford Sound.
Ideal Te Anau Accommodation
Well appointed room, knowledgeable and friendly hosts, good breakfast to keep you going on the Milford Sound trip.
Nathan and Liz are the best! My wife and I stayed at the Shakespeare House in Te Anau our first night and New Zealand. We landed in Queenstown and unfortunately it was not off to a great start to our trip as the airline did not bring my wife's bag. So that night and the next day she only had the clothes she wore on the plane. We were visiting Milford sound the next morning so this wasn't great news. We got to the Shakespeare house later that night and Liz was there for our late check-in. She was very accommodating and even offered to lend my wife warmer clothes for our visit to Milford sound the next morning. The next morning we woke up to find out the route in to the sound was closed and not opening till 10am. This was no good as we had a cruise of the sound scheduled for 1030am...and it takes longer than 30minutes to make the drive from the gate. Nathan wasted no time and first thing he did when we got up was tell us the news about the route. He then proceeded to call up the company providing our sound cruise and got us switched to the next tour at noon. This worked out great, it was a beautifully clear day in the sound and my wife and I absolutely loved it. In short, Nathan and Liz help make New Zealand what it is. A beautiful country you can't wait to visit again and when we do we'll certainly be booking a room at the Shakespeare House. Did I mention a wonderful breakfast....it was perfect.
Great! The owner are friendly and very nice.
great for over night stay when going to Milford Sound. Pick up for tour at door and on time
Very pleased with our stay. The hosts looked after us well and gave good advice re our visit to Milford Sound. Location of of B and B was good, near the lake and convenient for eating places in town. We would recommend it to friends and family. Roger, Rhyll and Paul Willoughby
Very nice owners, small room/bathroom
Good breakfast. Great people. Very nice. The bathroom was so small that overtime you turned in the shower, you hit a wall. And we are petite-sized people. It was more like a motel, with rooms in a row, instead of a cutesy bed and breakfast, which the name hints towards.
Shakespeare House Te Anau - Not good experience
Not good. I booked through Hotels.com for two nights. In signing up for my preferences I asked for 1 double and 1 single bed. Free cancellation was to be approximately one week from check in date. Upon arrival i was told that the room only had one King bed. Would not work as I tend to wiggle a lot and .No other room was avaiable. I had to find another place to stay and considerably more expense. Why offer preferences in beds if they are not going to keep it. Now I see that Hotels.com is only offering me $100 New Zealand dollars - which is about $73 USD. Hotels charged me $121.18 USD. Will put a stop on the credit card charge with Visa. Should be able to cancel at no cost if room preference was not given.
Lovely stay
Very nice and cozy little Bed & Breakfast in a great locations, hosts accommodated our early check in request and provided a lovely home cooked breakfast in the morning. Highly recommended.
Stop over in Te Anau for Milford Sound visit
Comfortable lodgings with a great breakfast to start the day.
Fantastic breakfast and convenient location
The hospitality from the proprietors was absolutely top-notch. They welcomed me in and gave me lots of useful local info, including a map with points of interest along the way for my drive to Milford Sound the next day. It's a pleasant walk down to the lake and along the shore into the main shops area. I had a lovely dinner. Breakfast the next day (provided at the Shakespeare B&B) was delicious and filling! I loved the omelette. I also appreciated the mini-fridge and other nice touches in the room. The only downside was that the mattress on my bed was rather worn and very saggy, and the walls are very thin so I was woken by others getting up and about at 5 a.m. For the cost of the room I was expecting a more comfortable bed. Perhaps this can be next on the upgrade list.
nice place to stay. room is cosy. comfy. nice house guest. not very near to the town. it would be helpful if you have your own transport. otherwise, a pleasant stay , even though a short one for us
Two Enjoyable Days at the Shakespeare House
Liz and Nathan are a very welcoming couple, and new owners of the Shakespeare House. They greet you with a smile, and prepare a wonderful breakfast each morning. We enjoyed eggs (any style), mushrooms, hash browns, and toast one morning.....and an omelette the next. Their home made muffins are a real treat. Also available are yogurt, fruit, juice, and coffee. The dining area can comfortably seat all of the guests, and we truly enjoyed the conversations we had with an interesting group of people who were staying here during our stay. It felt like home. The Shakespeare House's room is spacious and comfortable, with a well equipped kitchen. It is located on a quiet street, within a short walk to the lake. Te Anau is a great hub location for day trips to Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound, the Glowworm Caves, and more. We would certainly stay at the Shakespeare House on a return trip to Te Anau.
