Nice vintage hotel. Best for those who appreciate vintage.
A favorite place
I have stayed at the Sentinel since it was the Govener 5 or 6 times. Classic old hotel with beautiful wood work, but not at all worn out. Room was very up to date, though wifi poor. Enough outlets, bathroom very nice. Chose a premium room w fireplace. With 2 easy chairs and table a pleasant place to do some work. Tram is noisy, but i like it (as have lived by them in past). Jakes was fabulous for dinner. Much better then lat time. Staff helpful. Great location. Close to everything. Nearby public parking. No reason to stay abywhere else
Excelent
The decor was the perfect blend of modern convenience and the old world charm. It did not feel like a basic cookie cutter room. The rooms were moddy and warm but also felt bright and clean. The staff was genuinely friendly and seemed as though they enjoyed their work. I would absolutely stay again.
Staff is so helpful here, top notch service in every way. Fun property, great area to walk around, close to shopping and so much yummy food. Loved it!
Have to try it.
Lovely gem with delightful staff. First stay there and we will be back.
A very nice stay
Front desk people were great. Room was clean and comfortable.
This Prperty was beautiful, quiet and a good location for being downtown. The staff was amazing!! I will definitely stay here again.
Revitalized and Beautiful
The Sentinel Hotel is a grand hotel with its traditional elegant furnishings, decor, crown moldings and staircases. It features one of Portlands most iconic restaurant , worth your time to dine. Surprisingly I also featured the hot spot of the city bar with dancing. The oversized rooms, ours with fireplace and the most comfortable bed was well appointed. The location of the hotel was superb. The price was surprisingly good as we have paid a lot more for a lot less. Will bookmark The Sentinel Hotel for a return visit. Portland itself is worth the trip filled with incredible independent stores and shops, incredible dining options and safe.
Great for every family member
Enjoyed comfortable accommodations, enjoyable environment and style to the shared and private spaces, as well, wonderful on-site restaurant and bar accommodations. The whole family enjoyed - ages 7-80 years old.
We don’t realize that the train line ran so close by the hotel that we were woken up every night. I think the windows should be made sound proof.
Stayed for a Holiday Party. Great service. Jakes restaurant is also great.
older hotel that shows it's age.
We’ve stayed here in the past. Nice property, excellent venue for a party.
Great staff that are very helpful and are willing to answer all your questions! No matter how small the request is. One thing to note was my bathroom was dirty and the elevator was down so they couldn’t clean it. Besides that, it was a beautiful hotel!
Lovely
Great experience. Beautiful old hotel centrally located.
Excellent weekend getaway spot
Great property for a great price! The valet was amazing with helping us navigate the city. It’s super close to the Pearl district and all the downtown shopping and dining. The restaurant and bar were great and staff very friendly. We had a room that faced a sort of inner courtyard which I wish they would have told us at check in but otherwise, I really enjoyed the hotel and will stay again.
The food in both restaurants was mediocre. They truly need to improve what they serve as well as the quality. If they can raise this quality the hotel would be a great place to stay.
We like the location, next to our son's apt. The atmosphere was very cool and charming. Old school elegant charm. Restaurant was part of the property. What we didn't like was too much street noise. The hotel provided ear plugs which solved the problem. Next time we will get a room higher off the street or interior room.
Very nice! Staff was great and rooms were lovely.
This hotel was absolutely beautiful and we loved our stay here. The location downtown was great, and we enjoyed walking in the area around the hotel. I would definitely stay here again!
Great affordable hotel! You get a lot for your money. This is our second time staying at the Sentinel and will stay again. Hotel is very centrally located to all the best parts of Portland, Pioneer square, Pearl district, and PSU. Beds were very comfortable with high quality linens. Bathroom amenities were also very nice quality and smelled amazing. The art around the property is very fun and eclectic, we kept noticing new things. Especially loved the signed guitar (you will have to stay to see who signed it.) The restaurant had a good selection for anyone. The custom cocktails in the bar were amazing. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to Portland, business or leisure.
Great, easy stay in downtown Portland. Comfortable, clean, friendly staff. Small gym but enough to get a solid workout in.
Historic hotel nicely renovated
loved the room but didn’t like the fact that the patio was not exclusively closed off from your neighbor next to you on both sides.
We had a wonderful weekend stay. Our room was super cute & clean. We loved being on the top floor because of the shuttered skylights. The only slight annoyance was a small hum in the room at night that would come & go. There was also a lot of road noise/traffic. I’d recommend bringing ear plugs. But those minor inconveniences didn’t impact our overall enjoyment of our stay.
Na
A beautiful hotel, lovely room that smells great. Attentive and helpful staff. The full service restaurant offered a broad and generous happy hour menu.
Well, our room was not ready at the time of check-in. But the staff was very polite about it. We waited 45 minutes for our room to be ready. We reserved an Executive room, but it was quite average. The TV was quite small, the bathroom had a bit of urine smell, the sink had deposits around the faucet and did not look clean. They also kept the drinking glasses right above the toilet. The worst part was the shampoo. Even with conditioning twice, it stripped my hair to the point that my hair felt like straw and some of it broke off onto the pillow. I was shocked. We also ordered room service. The eggs benedict was not good because the eggs were poached hard. I didnt have a chance to tell the front desk any of this during check-out because he was the only person tending the front desk, and was busy being on-hold on the phone. He whispered that he'd email the receipt. I still have not received the receipt by email. Our stay was average at best, but having my hair ruined was the worst. I now have to spend hundreds to repair it. If you stay here, bring your own shampoo, conditioner, beard oil. My husband beard was so rough after his shower, too. We will unlikey stay here again. There are plenty of wonderful hotels in the area that we've stayed in multiple times a year.
Very nice ambiance. Corner room is very spacious. Jake’s Grill restaurant was very good. Ideal location to walk around to check out sites. Great customer service at front desk.
Wonderful old hotel with excellent service. Great restaurants nearby. The only negative is the high number of homeless people walking around
Green day
Beautiful place cool inside lots of carved wood grand staircases clean big rooms
This place is really nice with everyone i came in contact with were very willing to help andvmake my stay better. The room i was in was very clean, the bed was really comfortable. The thing i didnt like is that room service stops at 11am so i used uber a lot. It was easy to get around, plenty of places to eat at. I would definitely stay again, you wont be disappointed staying here.
Beautiful hotel and staff members are very nice!
It's a beautiful old building. Former elks Lodge, very unique and ornate. Would definitely recommend it to friends or family. Was a little disappointed that the original suite I books had an issue and we were not able to be in that room. But the staff was apologetic and gave us a bottle of champagne for the inconvenience.
Was advised it was not safe to park on the street. Restaurant in the hotel very nice. Jazz Wed evening and welcome hour from 5 to 6 at the winebar
Absolutely lovely! The room was pristine and the staff was so helpful. Bar and nightclub on premises was tops!
There was no shower curtain in our bathroom and there was some dust and grime buildup in the bathroom. Otherwise, it was a fine stay in a sophisticated and elegantly styled hotel.
Room was very comfortable, quiet and clean. Providence Park, as well as retail shops and restaurants were in walking distance. (Packing a flashlight for walking at night is helpful since many sidewalks are dark.) Hotel service was excellent!! Would stay there again!
It was ok, pretty outdated hotel, feels like your in the 80’s, no in room service only got breakfast.
Great spot to stay when visiting for a Timbers game! Parking garage around the block and great restaurants all around. Bar downstairs turns into a nightclub (at least the Saturday night when we were there). Great little snack selection at concierge.
Great restaurants
Very comfortable in a great location.
My wife and I spent a quick overnight in Portland for a show at the Crystal Ballroom. The Sentinel was very comfortable and a short walk to the venue, along with nearby restaurants and bars.
Love this hotel! Clean, amazing location, staff was great but my favorite was the overall esthetic. So beautiful and comfortable
Check in is at 4pm. I appreciated that staff made an exception to give us access at 1pm. "Just this one time", she said. The valet staff also were very personable and accomodating.
Area is ok - I wanted downtown for the history and to be near the river but like other cities the area suffers from beggars/homeless. But the hotel is great. To pick one random thing I really liked : the black tea! The in-room tea was very good.
Gorgeous historic hotel located downtown. It is extremely close to public transportation, shopping, and downtown nightlife. Staff and service was amazing. We stayed in a queen deluxe room. It was spacious and adorable! We will be back!
Beautiful, historic hotel, centrally located to shops and restaurants. Staff were amazing!
Nice
No
Great location and well kept
Staff was wonderful and so friendly! Room was super cute and comfortable. Would stay here again!
Beautiful building, beautiful room. Poor amenities, and dining options end at 9p. Not great for a late check in!
Facade of a luxury hotel, but it's not actually. Front desk people are not very interested in their guests, they don't offer to help you and don't have answers for questions. Only person that helped us was a valet guy. Stayed in one of the nicer rooms during the second leg of our honeymoon. It's an old place that management hasn't actually cared to renovate in any meaningful way. The designer was great which is why I mention it having the "facade" of a luxury hotel. But the rooms are really just just polished.. you know whats. You can tell there's been water damage that was fixed and covered with paint, repairs on the walls and ceilings that were poorly patched, extremely dirty air vents which worries me about the air quality. Wouldn't recommend.
I didn’t have the opportunity to stay here. I got influenza A, tried canceling through Expedia (where I booked) so I could get a refund and book at a later date. The virtual agent told me they called the hotel and the hotel agreed to reimbursing me. Now I’m being told they refuse to reimburse me due to strict booking. I lost at least 320 on that room due to a situation out of my control (it was hard enough having to cancel my whole trip). I will warn others to never book here, and I will definitely take my business elsewhere. Very disappointed in Expedia and the hotel management.
The design is very nice and classic. I got a very clean feel from the rooms. Staff was able to book my room late night with no problems. House coats in the room were a plus. Parking could have been better, but it is the city! Great hotel!
The Sentinel is a gorgeous hotel with beautiful rooms and a wonderful staf!
Great location, Friendly and professional staff
Considers itself highend hotel. The hallways to our room ton 6th floor were very pretty, the sitting room, wine tasting room onsite, and terrace with fireplace in our room was nice. The rest of our room was pretty plain and a little dull. Stepping tub shower needed an upgrade for sure. Bathroom needed upgrades to level of hotel you’re paying for. Valet very expensive at $65 per day so we parked ourselves. But the valet guys were very nice and let us park to unload our bags. We did enjoy our stay. Wine room staff were pretty awesome.
old historic building. the two bed rooms are large.
Best hotel stay ever!!!
Ok, there are a lot of good things to say about this location. Staff- great! Super helpful and kind. Comfortable- yes! Bed comfy and everything worked fine. My disappointments: this is not a 5 star hotel. Every listing says it is/ no. The condition of this hotel for that rating is lacking. Chairs in room really damaged, doors, paint, elevators, needed some serious TLC etc. I expected more for the rating. Rooms and bathroom are really small, and I reserved an above basic room. Overall I enjoyed my stay- it’s very quiet and comfortable, just lacking in the 5 star area. Would I stay again? Maybe- not a no and not a solid yeah. But again, I’m very satisfied with my comfort level here.
Great location
Stepping Back in Time
Front desk staff was friendly and the valet attendant provided excellent service with regards to having our car ready when we needed it. Allowed us flexibility of using our car during our stay and not worrying about having our car broken into. Well worth the $62 parking fee. Loved the decor and of the hotel. Like stepping back in time. Also loved the spacious room. We celebrated our 31st year anniversary in which “time piece” is the theme for 31 years. So stepping back in time with our stay at the Sentinel made it a special occasion.
Very friendly staff. Beautiful Property. Nice part of downtown Portland. The room however. So disgusting. Stains all over the furniture of either bodily fluids and or food. Giant ugly and concerning rips in the headboard fabric. Stains on the mantle. Missing artwork. So many cobwebs built up on the ceiling fire suppression sprinkler that I wondered if it would even work. At that point I was now concerned for my safety. The concierge offered to move me to another room but with so many things that were overlooked and the safety concern, I could not bring myself to feel to trust that the hotel was safe.
Really nice hotel. Location is great.
Room needs renovation
We arrived late at night and the night club adjacent to the lobby was blasting music so we had to SCREAM to be heard for check-in. The room was spacious but… the bathroom was poorly designed. Not one shelf for toiletries, the shower was extremely small! The water leaked through the shower door and soaked the floor which was a slip and fall hazard! Even my towel was soaked the first day so I relocated them. Also, the headboard for the bed was torn apart and peeling all over our heads. It was very unsightly. Every morning we woke up to a heavy garlic aroma that wafted through our air vents. It was a terrible smell. I prefer more drawer space to stay organized and not live out of the luggage.
Really enjoyed the decor and service at this hotel. Classy joint!
Great place to stay with great service!
Overall great stay. Very nice facility and staff. Hat tip to the chef at the all vegan bar/restaurant next to the lobby.
Unique cozy hotel located in a downtown area
This is a really great hotel!
Good
The staff was so attentive to our needs. When we arrived our mini fridge was not cooling so they immediately sent someone to repair for us. We were only in Portland for one night but would have definitely stayed here if we had more time to stay. Room was spacious and quiet. Bed was extremely comfortable. Enjoyed our stay thoroughly.
Not 5-Stars - we won’t return
Our stay wasn’t the getaway we had hoped for. When I booked the 5-Star rated Sentinel for a 3 night getaway, I thought I got a great deal for a luxury stay. I imagine it was once 5-Stars but times have changed and in my opinion the hotel hasn’t kept up. It is very dated, poor touch up paint work, stained window drapes that barely move. The windows are old so you hear the train all night. The biggest issue came Saturday night. They have supposedly “unrelated business” attached to their lobby that literally operated like a night club into the early hours of the morning. Around midnight our entire hotel was evacuated for a “faulty alarm” and we went stumbling down 6 flights of stairs to enter this ridiculous night club scene that carried on and ignored the alarms. Probably because they couldn’t hear them over the ear shattering music they were playing. I asked the guy at the desk to turn it down and he simply said, “it is a separate business” and clearly didn’t have the guts to tell them to respect the entire hotel standing in the lobby, hallway and on the street. You guys need to think about the clientele you are trying to attract. Knock a couple of stars off if you want to have a nightclub crowd that might enjoy a faulty alarm system that leads them to a party. You also need to have better measures in place for freak incidents like this. Step 1: turn the f’ing music down.
Hotel was beautiful. Our room just felt a little run down. But the fire pit was cool.
Very pleasant stay with very helpful staff
Immaculate building with history and beautiful architecture. Excellent service
Fantastic!
The hotel had a beautiful lobby, but the premier king bed that I booked was a bit underwhelming. We were on the third floor, and the noise from the trolley outside kept us up all night. It was like a scene out of my cousin vinny's.
Old feel without the old drawbacks. Clean and comfortable with some style. Unlike the copy and paste boxes of the trendy chains. TV is antiquated but otherwise a great stay.
We really enjoyed our stay. The room was great and the terrace was definitely worth the extra money. No complaints.
Centrally Located. Valet parking is costly!
A high end historic hotel in the center of Portland.
The stay was wonderful and the staff went above and beyond to make my birthday weekend great. The area around the property is loud at night, but manageable.
beautiful property.
Had a great time and William the manager along with the rest of the staff were great.
Old hotel, well maintained. It’s in a sort of rough area, though there is worse.. the rooms are clean, nice, and comfortable. The hotel sends some strange emails with very strict words about showing up late and leaving late and penalties for both. It’s odd. The staff is very nice in person though.. The sidewalks in the area seem like they’re regularly cleaned especially in front of the hotel, but there’s a lot of random poop EVERYWHERE in the blocks around the hotel. I’m not sure if it’s just this area or if Portland is somehow…poopy??
Nice hotel. Staff was good and friendly but could be a bit more knowledgeable about the area, directions etc. overall very good experience.
We had such an amazing time at the Sentinel. Would definitely recommend it to others. The staff were all so kind and helpful.
Fantastic Birthday Trip
It was my daughter's birthday and staff had gluten and dairy free cupcakes waiting in our room, she absolutely loved it and the personalized card. The room was so spacious and the fireplace an added bonus!
Way nicer hotels in the area for a much better price. Not impressed at all.
Great place central to everything
Week trip in Portlandia
Good location good service. Rooms need a little updating. Little issues include fireplace on terrace would not light while other neighbors did. Expensive parking be sure to check charges on checkout they like to charge for parking on nights I did not park onsite. Nice older hotel!
Classic
We’re born and raised Portlanders and we stayed for a staycation. Highly recommended, one of the best, classic hotels in town.
Quiet
