Had a fantastic few nights here. About 10-15 minutes walk into the centre, plenty of good places to eat nearby & restaurant onsite. The hotel was stunning & the staff were incredibly friendly & helpful. Plenty of space to lounge outside & a choice of pools. Would happily stay here again.
Beautiful 5 star property in beautiful Funchal. Ocean views several swimming pools including access to swimming in the ocean. Friendly staff made this a home away from home.
Nice stay
Had a great stay here for our honeymoon. Reception is great and the facilities are nice. AC is a bit lacking and the bathrooms are more outdated, but everything else was great for us.
We stayed here for our honeymoon and we absolutely loved it! Great location, loved being able to jump into the ocean from the platform. The staff was so friendly. Walking distance to the center of Funchal with so many dining and shopping options. Will definitely return.
Stayed at the hotel from May 26 to June 1 and had a wonderful time. Check in was easy and our room was ready with a nice welcome fruit basket. We appreciated the personalized touch. Each day our room was cleaned, towels restocked, as well as bottled water. There was lots of selection for breakfast. All the staff were very kind and welcoming Thank you Royal Savoy for making our first trip to Madeira memorable.
Hi the Royal Savoy was a lovely hotel with many facilities and many pools and an inside one and the staff were so friendly and helpful we will definitely be going back to that hotel but this time it will be more than a few days
Outstanding
Amazing hotel and wonderful service. Absolutely loved it.
Outstanding, everything is excellente. Maybe just need to improve the gym.
Great hotel
A truly great hotel and good value. One of the reasons I selected it - and one of the features I really liked - is that they provide the option to swim in multiple outdoor pools and also access a protected area in the sea immediately adjacent to the outdoor pools. It's wonderful to swim in the sea and the water there is relatively warm.
Decent location from the city great views pleasant room
The Royal Savoy is right on the ocean, so views are beautiful. The pool area is nice and they also have an indoor pool which was great as we were there in March. Our room was spacious with a nice decor. You can walk into the heart of Funchal which has many wonderful restaurants and sights to see.
Fabulous in every way
Everything was clean, the staffing was really kind.
The best pool area
Generally a great experience. Though I must say not a children family kind of hotel. The client target is within elderly fussy people. The restaurant is to pretentious for a children family. The menu doesn't really have children's kind of food and you feel quite uncomfortable with all the elderly guests looking rather disturbed by your noisy naughty little ones.. But apart from that, the hotel looks great and swimming pools are great!
The Royal Savoy has the feel and ambience of a long-established quality hotel even though it is a relatively modern building. It is set on a cliff by the sea, with the entrance on the 8th floor and rooms down to the ground at sea level. Staff are friendly, helpful and efficient without being patronising. All speak good English. Food is top quality, with a variety of restaurants inside and out serving everything from snacks to a full meal. The included breakfast was as good as, and generally better than, any we have experienced in any of the hotels we have stayed in at home or abroad. We had a room service dinner on our first night (been up since 4am to catch the flight) and it was like a full silver service. There are several good local restaurants (the best is X-Tonel) but sadly some have closed due to the covid problems. The grounds and outdoor pools are well maintained and clean with helpful staff always ready to set up the parasols and help you settle down for a relaxing time. There is a good indoor pool and a decent gym with various machines. Spa treatments are also available. In summary a top quality hotel whose staff care about their guests. We have stayed there several times and will go again. We even prefer it to Reids!
Nice Hotel
Hotel is clean, the staff are friendly and the food was good quality with vegetarian and vegan available. Good location by the sea. No beach though. Quite an uphill climb near the Hotel when coming back from the town Lots of shops and restaurants close by. We stayed 10 nights and had very good weather throughout. Enjoyed our first time in Madeira
My stay at Royal Savoy
I had an amazing trip. The staff were excellent and looked after us. I will stay here again and recommend Savoy ant day. Not forgetting the ocean view from our balcony.
just need nice pillow to make it perfect
Stayed for 5 days over Christmas , in 2 bedrooms with my teenager daughter that usually found something to moan about, but we all love and enjoy our stay. The only criticism is the pillows. One is too big, fat and hard, and the other one is too small. If we have normal size pillows then it will be perfect
Very modern. Excellent amenities. Friendly staff. Proximity to restaurants and Funchal marina. Five minutes walk to the ocean.
Hotels.com sells a hotel closed for renovation
Guys!! seriously ?? !! bow can i leave a comment for the hotel which is closed for renovation???? i have written many times to support about that i have a zero feedback... shame on you...
Happy Holiday
Our stay was wonderful, a real 'home from home' with excellent service from the staff team. Can't wait to return.
Staff always friendly and helpful. Double room with sea view balcony was fine, huge bed! Breakfast buffet could hardly be better whether you want a light continental or full English. Well situated with a good selection of restaurants nearby and easy walk to Funchal town. Lunch snacks also good quality and wide choice. A well equipped gym and good indoor pool for anyone wanting some exercise, more relaxing options also available. Hotel grounds have plenty of sunloungers which are not laid out in rank and file but distributed around the intriguingly laid out grounds. We prefer Royal Savoy to Reid's.
Family recomended
The views are just amazing, great for families
Totally underwhelmed
Very dated hotel. Not worth the €300+ per night. Disappointed to find it’s a timeshare complex. What’s described as executive suite is actually a dated timeshare apartment. Breakfast is very dated and no alcohol a carte option. Omelette, cold bacon, fried bread, tinned fruit on offer. In fairness, there’s an egg station, some fresh fruits and baked goods, but these are the bears minimum you’d expect. It was a very dissatisfying stay, cost over £1500 for 5 nights. I expect much much more for that money. There was also heavy and loud construction work going on all day next door as they demolished an old hotel. e were never made aware of this.
A good position and facing the sun. We were unfortunate to not get the sun on the balcony at any time of the day. This could be better at other times of the year.
Hotel was wonderful, views of the pool area and ocean were a welcome sight each morning. A short walk down the hill to the town of Funchal was always pleasant. Many people strolling along the waterway, enjoying the sights!
Well sited within easy walking distance of Funchal. Several good restaurants nearby. Staff friendly and very helpful in a quietly reserved way with no fussiness. Breakfast top quality. Gardens relaxing, plenty of sun loungers with comfortable mattresses available, usually brought along by staff without asking. Light lunches readily available at a reasonable price. Evening meals rather pricey is the only negative we found. Have been twice, will definitely go again.
Beautiful place, amazing view over the sea, I loved!
Amazing property with super friendly staff! Rooms large and well appointed, breakfast buffet was fantastic.
Wifi is poor and Tuesday dinner is really bad
Better than expected (and expectations were high). The hotel staff was extremely helpful, friendly, professional and wonderfully polite. The hotel itself felt modern and was immaculate in its upkeep. The standard double room with ocean view was absolutely amazing for the cost; rooms were spacious, luxurious in decoration, had cavernous and we’ll appointed bathrooms (both a torrential shower and soaking tub), and the private deck (big enough for a lounge chair and table with chairs) with an unobstructed panorama of the bay brought paradise to life. A part of me wants to rate the hotel a 0/5 so that prices may continue to be as unrealistically low as they are today, but the staff deserve to be recognized for their superlative performance. My only hope is that, in the next few years when we revisit Funchal, we can afford this hotel again.
Wonderful Hotel
I stayed here for one night when I was in Madeira and the hotel was extremely nice and staff were very friendly, especially the check-in staff who were very helpful and allowed me to check-in 2 hours early which was very nice. Breakfast is on par with Belmond Reids Palace and Cliff Bay, excellent and plenty of choice. I will defiantly consider staying here again when I am in Madeira.
Excellent Hotel
Very comfortable hotel in good position. Staff helpful. A la carte menu very good but Italian Buffet disappointing. Rooms and swimming pool very comfortable and excellently kept.
First class but expensive hotel
Fabulous location convenient for walking into town or walking to the Lido area. Outdoor pools at sea level and also an indoor heated pool. Excellent breakfast spread with eggs cooked fresh before you. On the downside the hotel is pretty expensive and is largely a time share place so more timeshare people than actual hotel guests. There is nightly entertainment. Mainly singers and musicians. Quality is fairly low and after a while became counter productive. This is the second time we have stayed at the hotel but feel the quality although excellent is borderline in terms of justifying the price.
Excellent
Very clean, good service. Pedro Zamora, Classic Guitarist on Sunday night was fantastic
Very goood hotel close to the sea and to the town
We stayed for 3 nights and found the whole atmosphere very relaxing. The staff were vere friendly and helpful. The only weak area was the quality of the theme food in the retaurant in the evenings. We will be happy to come back to the Savoy
Beautiful hotel with an excellent view to the ocea
When we arrived we were so amazed to find out actually the hotel is everything I wanted to have for my 50th bithday: view to the ocean, a place where to bath in the sun and a luxury of a perfect stay! I was so happy and couldn’t ask for more.
Excellent hotel
Fantastic experience, great rooms, good breakfasts, very good facilities (pool, gym, sauna). Staff went out of their way to help.
Beautiful Views
A very attractive and comfortable hotel. Helpful and attentive staff. The restaurants al a carte menu was less inspiring. Overall we had a very enjoyable stay.
Rooms need updating and freshening up. Some of the furniture seems antiquated and needs modernising. Buffet breakfast limited and repetitive. Food generally mediocre. Maybe 5* on facilities but really a 4*. Better hotels in Funchal for a similar price. Consolation was that all staff were outstanding. It’s a shame that the reviews are not more balanced. Probably a good hotel in its day but it is almost certain that the Savoy Palace will tempt clients away from the Royal when opened.
Fun in Funchal
Our first time in Madeira and what a wonderful experience staying at the Royal Savoy was. From the moment we arrived we were looked after and nothing was too much trouble. The facilities at the hotel were fantastic - with 3 different pools to choose from to keep the children entertained. The food was sublime with a wide choice at breakfast and different themed nights for dinner. If eating in the hotel is not your thing, The hotel is located within walking distance or a short taxi to many different restaurants and bars. Cannot recommend the Royal Savoy highly enough!
We have stayed at the Royal Savoy a few times before, and continue to enjoy it. A good location, and lovely public areas.
Amazing Staff!
The staff really made this a home away from home, the were friendly and attentive, the customer service was beyond any I have experienced else where. Hotel facilities are fantastic and it's close to town, plenty of restaurants within walking distance (or short taxi if you're not keen on hills)
Central location
Overall we had a nice break, hotel 4.5 star ,excellent evening entertainment, would probably return
Review of Royal Savoy
The stay was lovely other than the hotel rooms being very dingy. We paid for 2 junior suites. I think they were overpriced as the fittings were very basic and for a suite the room was small. The only criticism I have of service is that at check out we weren't asked how our stay was. I would have mentioned the above point if we were asked.
Fabulous hotel.
A really lovely spacious hotel with lovely staff. My only criticism is the restaurant for breakfast was so cold due to air conditioning which was not needed at this time of year.
Fab sea location
Excellent food and wine. Very modern hotel with entertainment each evening. Breakfasts were also excellent. Two minor negetives1/ The main outdoor pools were very cold and as such virtually nobody used them. The outdoor jacuzzi was also very tepid which also meant nobody used it. The indoor pool however was superb and saved the day.
All round excellent
Excellent, in a minimum of 9 characters, just take my word for it Expedia.
Recent Visit
We stayed here for four nights. The whole experience was good.Check in was simple. We had booked a junior suite even though we were a couple. Paying that bit extra was worth it. The room was well maintained and had all the facilities we wanted. The TV could have been better positioned and the mini bar could have been better stocked. Some of the furnishings were also slighltly dated but still passable. Breakfast was good and had both continental and full English. We had dinner one night at the hotel and it was a buffet which was ok though nothing special. All staff were pleasant and we found the general atmosphere at this hotel to be quite congenial. This hotel seemed to be set up more for an older clientele. I happy to recommend this hotel and would stay here again. Apparently they are opening a new one soon.
A wonderful place to stay
The most wonderful place to stay. Everything was perfect.
Nice hotel rooms spacious with great view
Lovely clean spacious room with lovely sea view Food and wine superb served by friendly but professional staff Reception staff very friendly snd helpful
Best Hotel in Funchal
The best accommodating staff, amenities, large comfortable room and great restaurant. We will be back soon.
Home from Home
Exceptional heat and winds and wildfires were not planned for but the hotel staff coped very well and we're still highly professional attentive and pleasant.
Nice hotel away from city center
Nice hotel tucked away from the city center (about 30 minute walk.) Front desk staff, particularly Andre, was wonderful and very helpful. Breakfast was nice, selection of pastries, bread, fruit, meat/cheese, and made to order dishes. Private pools and entrance to ocean available. Geared toward families/older crowd, almost felt like an all inclusive resort without being all inclusive. Lots of laminated papers and signs with directions and rules, that was off putting.
Lovely hotel just 10 minute from centre Funchal
Conveniently situated for everything, great position with lovely views, pool area lovely with one pool heated, staff friendly and efficient , only 1 critism couldnt get air con cold enough so room was too warm
Comfortable hotel and close to Funchal centre
We spent one week at the Royal Savoy in early July 2016. We were upgraded to a Junior Suite which has the added benefit of a lounge area and kitchenette. The Royal Savoy is half way up (or down!) a steep hill which is quite a challenge is you are on foot. There are plenty of taxis if you need them. We enjoy walking and apart from a half day tour to Nun's Valley by mini bus, we were on foot for all our journeys. There is plenty to occupy yourself if you like an activity holiday, or its possible just to stay all day long by the pool! When we arrived in Madeira, it was cloudy and it stayed that way for a couple of days. It was still very warm and you need to be careful and cover up with sun cream. It did get cloudy on other days also, but this usually lifted to give a gloriously sunny day. Madeira has a lovely climate and the locals are really friendly. Its not such a 'touristy' destination and seems to have a more relaxed pace of life. Maybe in the height of summer, it would be busier with younger generations.
Wonderful hotel
Fab hotel , lovely staff and so clean and comfortable . Nothing is negative about this hotel , would defiantly recommend
Bumped here from Hotel Santa Porto Maria. Rooms here are larger and with better quality facilities. Not as close to Funchal town centre but a pleasant enough if partly steep walk that will keep you fit.
Well run hotel
Enjoyable. Made to feel welcome. Beautiful island to explore. Lovely people.
Fantastic Hotel & very friendly people in it also.
Lovely break in this beautiful Hotel not too far from the center but just far enough for a stroll in the evenings.
Good quality hotel in great location
Just came back from staying at this hotel and more than exceeded our expectations. We were upgraded to a superior suite on arrival. It was very spacious and great balcony with sea view. Rooms kept clean and well maintained hotel with great facilities. Breakfast was well laid out with plenty of variety. All staff pleasant and helpful. Highly recommend this hotel. Definitely a good 5 star hotel.
Classy hotel.
Classy hotel with excellent facilities and customer service. Good breakfast and very nice suite. Good location not too far from Funchal centre, although the hilly terrain is challenging for the less mobile. Two lovely outdoor and one indoor pools.
Cool Pools
Outside pools needs to be warmer, There is little point in saying it is heated, if it is still too cold to use. Reception seem to be obsessed with people leaving on time. Having stated that we are leaving prior to 11am, we do not need to be reminded that we need to be out by midday and we certainly do not need an alarm call. Overall the hotel delivered in all areas and cannot be blamed for the average age of the clientele being around 80.
Excellent facilities
The hotel is situated in a great place with excellent facilities and great entertainment
Traditional 5* quality with a relaxed ambiance.
The feel of a traditional 5* hotel from uniformed doormen to waiters who reached your water and wine bottles before you could top up yourself. There are more luxurious hotels in the world and maybe one or two on Madeira but overall this fulfilled the role of a comfortable holiday hotel without reaching the level of formality not always wanted on holiday.
Great Hotel
Hotel was really nice and the food was very good. We were given lovely room on the 5th floor. Three days into the holiday we had to be moved due to a water pipe leak under our shower into the room below. We were moved to the Pent House Suite which was lovely and even our own key to the lift. The only draw back the bed was really uncomfortable really hard, had full kitchen with not much in it other than a cupboard full top to bottom of glasses of every shape and size. I suppose if you book the Penthouse you don't cook! During the days Monday to Friday it was very noisy due to the Hotel next door building a jetty heavy construction in the sea next to our hotel. This also caused the sea to be very muddy not very nice to swim in. The hotel pools were great.
We were upgraded when we arrived which we thought would be great but it meant we didn't have the views of the ocean from our bed as we would have done with a standard room. There was no coffee, tea, milk or sugar when we arrived in the room so we went and bought some from a local supermarket, the next day we were then asked if we wanted any. I think this should have been in our room from arrival. There was no bottled water in the room when we arrived. Breakfast was poor. The pastries were dry (why not provided fresh pastries). Bread was dry and the cereals tasteless. Milk was always running out and I has to ask on more than one occasion for it to be refilled. Butter ran out a lot too. The nicer fruit was gone if you went to breakfast later. A buffet to me means a choice throughout the hours not based on first come first served. We didn't eat in the restaurant at night as it was too expensive and the restaurant space was a little poky. Housekeeping was quite late in the day rather than the morning and there was a constantly ringing telephone in the corridor by the lifts on my floor which was very loud. The air con in our room didn't appear to do anything no matter what setting it was set on. One of the lights in our kitchen area would not turn out which meant we didn't have complete darkness to sleep. WIFI was awful.
Great pools, helpful staff, wonderful breakfasts
Lots of really nice things at the hotel. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Nice facilities. Really enjoyed the stay. Minor point- one child developed a slight rash from the pillow but this could happen anywhere.
Great place
Great location room a junior suite excellent. Only down side was slow service. Very clean and well maintained.
Great position and facilities
ARRIVED TO FIND WE HAD BEEN UPGRADED TO THE PENTHOUSE SUITE. WHAT A DELIGHT, AS WE WERE THERE TO CELEBRATE MY HUSBAND'S BIRTHDAY. WONDERFUL SUITE WE FELT THOROUGHLY SPOILT. STAFF WERE LOVELY AND VERY ATTENTIVE. HOTEL ITSELF IS LOVELY IN A GREAT POSITION. PLENTY OF SUN BEDS AND TOWELS, POOLS GORGEOUS. HOTEL SEEMS TO CATER TO AN OLDER AGE GROUP!
Honeymoon for one week, free upgrade to suite with
Knowledgable friendly staff making us feel very welcome from the start of our holiday. Reception areas and lobbies spotless. Breakfast well laid out with superb choice.
Great hotel, friendly staff and wonderful views.
An amazingly relaxing holiday - made particularly special because of the hotel.
Excellent,friendly service in well-kept hotel.
The staff cannot do enough for you; meals are immaculately presented, at breakfast you are spoilt for choice. The hotel itself is well-looked after, some signs of wear in carpets and rooms. Pool area splendidly various, good pool for children and very spacious large pools and sea swimming too. More than enough sun loungers, well -spaced.
Quite simply superb in a most beautiful location.
We loved every moment of our stay at The Royal Savoy. The staff were very efficient, friendly, helpful and attentive. The room was very comfortable and a delight with spectacular views. Room amenities, and bathroom were excellent - always brilliantly cleaned and refreshed by the excellent team. Breakfast was excellent with a huge selection of foods on offer to satisfy any requirement. Special mention to the lady who cooks fresh eggs on demand, in whatever style required. Dining in the evening was excellent. Location is excellent - Funchal old town was only a short beautiful walk away. Many many restaurants available within walking distance - in our experience, it would be difficult to get a bad meal anywhere. The Spa as excellent, a facial treatment there was superb - great attention, good quality products, un-rushed and very relaxing. Leisure facilities were excellent with outdoor and indoor pools, gym and the sea. Everything at this hotel is kept to a very high standard. One the best stays that we have ever had - very highly recommended.
