If you're looking a convenient location this is it!! I doubt you'll find a better location to stay, the room wasn't so great but it works i highly recommend this room for its location.

The hotel was a bit difficult to find due to a lack of signage on the outside. Once inside we could not easily locate which floor we had to go to. The room was tired but clean and having a balcony was great. The location more than made up for that. Really, one could not have asked for a better location. One minor drawback, nobody could speak a word of English. Google translate helped.

Great Location, cannot get any more central. many attractions at easy walking distance, metro stations very close. Food, shopping, buzz all around. The lady, Margarita, if I remember her name correctly is a darling. she is courteous, helpful and always smiling. Would absolutely recommend the place to anyone going to Madrid for a few days, especially for the first time. 😊😊

This was a fairly basic hotel, with perfectly adequate facilities, smack in the middle of Madrid, up a busy lane near a main square. No frills and largely left to get on with it. Luckily, I was towards the rear, away from the street noise.

I have been staying at Hostal Luz many times since 2015. The service is always excellent and friendly. I wouldn't be coming back if it wasn't!! Unfortunately, this weekend, the lift wasn't working. As Luz Madrid is on the 3rd floor, this made it quite difficult for me, not helped by the fact that i had too much luggage!! Going out each day was difficult too, as I also have a heart condition. Margarite was very helpful with the luggage on my arrival and departure. (I must travel light next time). The problem with the lift has only happened once before in 8 years. I will be back in the future. Always helpful and welcoming.

Good and friendly staff

Very clean, easy access to dining, shopping. It has air conditioning and the staff is very helpful and polite.

Luz Madrid is a special place convenient to the liveliest area of Madrid. We loved it and appreciate the owner for her personable hospitality.

5 stars review will be not enough, how about 10 stars. I’m very happy that I had the opportunity to stay at Luz Madrid Rooms. Lady Margarita, Lady Teresita and Lady Maria de Los Angeles were very warm and welcoming. My special thanks for Margarita for all guidance and directions. Look no further when staying in Madrid. I highly recommend this place and you will thank me for my recommendation. I will definitely come back to Luz Madrid Rooms on my next trip.

Nice location ,easy to take the metro and the bus, walking distance to shoping

Small quaint hostel in a central location. Easy to walk to tourist areas like San Miguel Mercado, Palacio, various plazas too name a few. Bring your best walking shoes. I even walked to Parque Retiro 😊 hostel has a very tiny elevator or you can use stairs 3rd floor. The price was reasonable since I split with my roommate. Near the Opera Metro. Indicate twin beds if you are rooming with a friend. Our flight left late in the evening n she kept our bags so we can enjoy the day prior to our departure. Thank you!

In the heart of Madrid, gesutiful area

You can’t find a better place around the area. Walking distance to most of the Madrid attractions. Margarita is the best host you can find in Madrid. She gave you ideas and warn you as well. The place was clean and well served. I will definitely recommend this place.

Good location

The location is awesome because it's in the heart of a busy area so it was great for finding places to eat, shop, and just walk around. Everything is right outside your door. However at night, when you're trying to sleep, it can be a little noisy. The noise doesn't necessarily make it a bad stay, it's just good to know so that you can understand and set your expectations. The room is older but they keep it clean and the staff is nice.

Great budget hotel

Great service and cleanliness was great. The only thing is that they clean your room everyday despite leaving a do no disturb sign on the door.

Very, very Friendly Staff and a Great, very Convenient Location!!! Uncomfortably small room. Tiny shower in the bathroom. The women who appeared to be the owner or manager was very nice and apologized multiple times that we were in such a small room. She said they only use it if they are sold out abd it is their last room available. The breakfast was good but it was a voucher for a restaurant 3 blocks away from the actual accommodations.

Great location in Madrid

This was definitely an affordable place to stay in Madrid and the location can't be beat. Everything else is pretty basic. We really struggled with the card key, but that's probably on us. The owner speaks very little English, however, but she is actually the sweetest lady ever and definitely tried to be helpful and accommodating despite that language barrier. Seeing some of the other rates people paid, I think we overpaid though...

Great place in heart of Madrid

Wonderful location.Staff could not have been more friendly and helpful.Breakfast at the cafe around the corner was excellent.The hotel room was cleaned daily,air condition was fab (outside temperature was 26 degrees at 10p.m).Excellent position for metro,loads of places to eat (2 mins from hotel) and easy access for main train stations to places like El Escorial,Toledo ,Avila,etc.Great place to stay if you want to explore Madrid.

Sangria!

There is a problem with the keys and the front desk staff wants to blame the guest for the keys not working. They do not have blankets in the summer so if you are a person who likes a blanket then bring your own. The location is excellent, the rooms are simple but clean.

Have been staying here since 2015. I would not keep going back if it wasn't good. They are very friendly and welcoming. I have said in previous reviews that they don't speak any English, but they did say a few words this time!! My Spanish is improving too! There was a problem this time. The lift in the building had stopped working on the day I arrived. Liz rooms are on the 3rd floor so this made things quite difficult for me as I have a heart problem and high blood pressure. Consequently, my stay was less enjoyable this time. Marguerite was very apologetic and the problem was not her fault. The lift was fixed on the day I left. Looking forward to going back there in September. Hope the lift is working!! Muchas gracias!!

Great situation, Clean and tidy

This is not our usual choice of accommodation. Although we were pleasantly surprised, clean neat and bit quirky.

Location is great. close to the Opera metro station and walking distance to Palace and city center. Hard to find an entrance at night.

Hostel not worth the price was expensive this price would be a hotel and not a hostel. But it was clean and the staff were very friendly and helpful. But the breakfast was not in the hotel. The breakfast was very small and very poor compared to the price of the hostel. Again he did not buy it because he did not pick up the price.

Stay was ok as the other facility of Luz is much more better. Room heater doesn’t seem to work and we suffered due to cold. Moreover the people in charge doesn’t speak english so was difficult to communicate.

Madness in Madrid!!

I have stayed here several times now and have always been happy. I have mentioned in previous reviews that the owner didn't speak English. After my last review, she said 'Thank you'. Progress!! This is the second time I have stayed at this time of year. I would definitely not stay in Madrid at this time of year again. It was far too crowded. Literally thousands of people - almost to point of being dangerous. All the people were very good natured and friendly and no-one was drunk or aggressive. There were just too many people.

Clean, basic rooms in excellent location in the centre of Madrid, close to Plaza Mayor and Puerta de Sol. Walking distance to most attractions and surrounded by great little bars and restaurants. rooms are small but clean and quiet. wifi good.

Not Good at all.

Not as we thought it would be. We arrived and our room wasn't ready so we had to wait in a small computer area for about half an hour or sit in the small reception area with a dirty worn rug. We were then shown to our room and was surprised at how small it was as well as in real need of decorating as lots of scuff marks and plaster that had been knocked of the wall probably due to suitcases not having sufficient room to get to the wardrobe. I then looked at the bed which wasn't of a normal double size but of a small double. The bed linen looked as though it was very old, dirty marks, and small hairs as well as not being ironed. The decorative cushions had sweat marks on them. I then went into the bathroom to find black mould in the shower cubicle and rust and mould on the table. I then went to the reception to ask for another room to be told they were fully booked until October!! Having thought well going to have to grin and bear I asked for more pillows as there were only 1 to be told that they did not have any more. Curtains drawn due to terrible views. Air condition even on top settings wasnt very cool. Reluctantly slept on top of the bed which was so hard and uncomfortable and far to small for 2 people. Even though we were booked in for 3 nights we packed and left. Shame as the location was good.

Nice hotel close to the heart of Madrid

Hostal Luz feels like home. The hotel offers very private rooms, neat and comfortable enough to rest after walking around in Madrid. The wifi is good too. The staff is very kind and I really enjoyed my conversations with Margarita, who is a superb lady. If you need any info or assistance, the staff is right there to help you.You can't beat the location, it's located close to most of every landmark of the city: Opera theater, the Royal Palace, Puerta del Sol Plaza, Plaza Mayor, la Gran Via, El Corte Ingles, etc...

Cozy and safe hotel

This hotel is closed to everything in Madrid downtown: Metro stations, stores, and attractions. It's safe and clean. The owners are nice and informative.

Excelent. We spend a great time in. Fabulus location. Frendly staff, special doña Margarita, she Gives us a up grade room, the last two nights... whith a balcony! Y recomend the Luz Madrid Hostal for a trip arround Madrid.

Hostal in central Madrid

The hostal was easy to find and it was in break Madrid. A short walk from the main square. The room was clean and the staff was friendly even though they could not speak English. I would recommend this hotel for a short stay.

The room was just satisfactory, air-conditioning not the best, but the location of the hotel and the front desk lady's hospitality make up for it. Although it can be cheaper I believe.

Hostel Luz Madrid

Not what I expected. It turned out to be a hostel and very difficult to find, no outside signs. The rooms were small, but very clean. Neighborhood was lovely and in the center of Madrid. Communication was difficult due to no English speaking staff. I would recommend it for anyone who likes being in the center of things at a budget price. Could not be beat for cleanliness.

No room in the inn

It was disapointing that despite having a booking confirmation and guaranteed by visa there was no room available.The substitute hostal was good for the price.comfortable and clean with very friendly staff.hostal ivor,calle del arenal.central location.

Hostal was hard to find being on the 3rd Floor of an apartment building with no signs. Hostal quality poor probably the worst place I have stayed booking on Hotel.com Good position for the underground nothing else

The Hostal is in a great location close to Plaza Mayor, Plaza Del Sol, and the Royal Palace. Use the call button on the right side of the front door doorframe - Hostal Luz is not easily identified. The elevator is only about 18 inches wide, but will accommodate most luggage. The Hostal is on the fourth floor (American way of counting floors, but the third floor in the European system - punch the button for "3" for the elevator). Once you get into the Hostal itself, the atmosphere is bright and cheerful with pale yellow walls and light colored floor tiles. The bathroom in my private room was large with a shower although the bedroom is not large and there is little room to place your luggage if not on one of the two beds. Rooms are cleaned well each day and the refrigerator is great if you are trying to eat from the grocery store. Negatives are that no one speaks more than bare minimum English, unclear voices can be heard through the walls, and my room could use a fresh coat of paint. All said, this is the second time I have stayed there, each time for a week and recommend it.

STAY AWAY...Owners incredibly disrespectful

No, No, No...DO NOT STAY HERE....This is probably the worst hostel I've ever been to. I'm not sure where these positive reviews are coming from. The pictures are nothing like the place. I've never been more uncomfortable in a place before. In this place you literally get a little room in a house and the owners are extremely unfriendly and so they get extremely irritated very quickly (especially if you don't speak Spanish...which I do) and lack any sort of effort to make you feel comfortable. I wish I could say the cockroach in my room, the leaks around the bathroom, and the uncomfortable beds were the only problems but SHE CALLED THE POLICE ON ME! I showed up and a police officer showed me his badge and questioned me about my intentions of being here in Madrid. She mentioned it was routine and that I shouldn't worry. Not once did she feel the need to apologize for this inconvenience. I felt so uncomfortable there that I LEFT! I've always stayed at the cheaper hostels and endure what is in front of me but the lack of respect and the uneasiness that comes with this place is ridiculous. The location is ideal but If you need a comfortable place to stay then don't waste your time or energy...FIND ANOTHER PLACE.

Home away from home...

myself and my family were very happy. we stay for ten days --the staff is very friendly. very near very plaza. beds very comfortable-- its a place run by family for many years. they are people you can trust--we sleep well because we trusted them.. without hesitation I truly recommend Hostel Luz Madrid for your stay in Spain. Enjoy!

Lovely

We went in November, they cranked the heat! We just opened our window to compensate. Clean room which was made daily, new towels and cups were left everyday. We were quite pleased. Real quick jog to royal palace and the theater, bit of a walk to the museums. As I had read in another review Margarita only speaks Spanish so be prepared :)

No a bad place to stay, once you have found it

Great value

Clean, affordable, conveniently situated to food, tourist attractions, and public transit. Margarit, who runs the place, is very nice and helpful.

Great location but hard to find initially.

The room was great but Luz was hard to find. It's on the third floor of a building with other business with no markings or signage on the outside. Didn't know the Luz was there until we got inside the front door, noticed a marking on a mailbox, then on the third floor went to a window and asked "is this the Hostal Luz"? When she said "si", I finally knew I had found it.

Fine, but caution

Our stay was good, the room was ready early and the private rooms are new and clean. However we were told we were lucky our room wasn't cancelled. The hotel was overbooked and we were told our room was almost cancelled 2 days prior to check in. We also overheard the hostess saying they had cancelled someone's room and if he showed up they would call the police. Beware of them cancelling your room with little or no notice!!!

I stayed 4 nights and very satisfied. The facilities are not modern but my room was very clean.

Good spot in the heart of Madrid!

This hotel has an ideal location as it is only about a five minute walk from the Puerta del Sol in one direction and the Plaza Mayor in the other. The Opera Metro stop is about one minute away. The rooms were clean and comfortable.

Could be better

I would recommend this hostel only for the price and great location but don't expect much. Service not very nice. Pictures of the rooms are not even close to the reality.

Wonderful stay

Hooray for Margerita - she was so helpful and charming. A very clean and well located hotel (Metro Opera) it was close to everything important. Best to stay in the new wing of the hostel.

Close to everything!!

The hostel is in a great location! You can walk to all the sites. The room was small, but very clean. Margarita is the greatest! From the minute I got there she was very attentive and helpful. Take her advise when she recommends that you walk to see all the sites. I loved staying here. You can tell margarita really cares about her guest!!!

Location and cleanlyness

This is a centric hostal half a block from Calle Arenal, which takes you to one of the most visited plazas in Madrid. From there, you can either take the subway to go to other famous points in the city. The management can't be more courteous and try to make your stay more pleasant and comfortable. There is free WiFi connection and the room is cleaned every day to enjoy after a long day city walk.

Excellent location, clean rooms.

We stayed in a room with private bathroom. The room had one double bed pushed to one side of the wall, satellite TV, good wifi, in room safe, and mini fridge. The room is extremely clean but basic. Bathroom had toiletries (shower cap, bath gel, soap, shampoo). The owner is nice but she only knows a few english words. When you check in, she gives you a map and shows you where you are, where the breakfast place is and where the sights are. You get a room key and it unlocks the building, the unit, and your room. We do not speak spanish and understood her body language and figured things out OK. We will stay here again next time in Madrid.

good time

My stay there was really pleasant i really like the room everyday they go in and clean it and they always have hot water i would def. Go there again if i go to madrid in the future. Thank you margarita and teresa for the warm welcome and all the help.

Location and friendly staff

The location was perfect if you Will be traveling by metro from and to the airport. The lady that works at the front desks is amassing. She knows so much, she is the best way to know Madrid.

Madrid as choice - better to look somewhere else

hostal at 3rd level of a building. Not difficult to find. Nice if you look for cheap and simple accommodation just steps from Opera (with Metro station) and royal palace area. The cheap rooms (they have different categories) not fine for couples, romantic gateways. Ok for business when majority of time spent outside :)

Difficult to find and my first time in a "hostel" - really impressed, basic, but was all that was needed. You get what you pay for :)

A nice stay in Madrid

A good hotel close to all the main Attractions in Madrid, in a nice location. The morning breakfast is in a separate building. At first the Hotel is hard to distinguish as it is in an Appartment, and I had to ask where the hotel was.

Hostal Luz convenient hostal.

The location, is perfect, 10 minutes to puerto del Sol, 3 minutes to Opera, and very close to Plaza Mayor. Street is reasonably quiet. Hotel has a lift which is convenient because the hotel is on 3rd floor. However lift is verrry small. Magarita the hotel manager keeps the hotel run proffessionaly and tidy, however, if you don't speak spanish you will find it extremely difficult but we managed to get by. Hotel has character, lots of light, many paintings. Make sure you book a room with a bathroom included. Bathroom is small and shower head is dodgy, falls on your head. Cafe that you have free breakfast in is lovely but they don't speak english, however we managed to get by. I can recommend this hotel only because it is affordable, has great location, Margarita is nice and helpful. Dont stay here if you are on your honeymoon unless your down to earth.

Great Location

My husband and I stayed for five nights in a double room with its own bathroom. The location is great in accessibility to top tourist sites, it's on a relatively quiet street, Margarita was very helpful with information about Madrid, and the breakfast was good for this location.

Great central hostel

This hostal is in a great location close to several metro stations and the palace. The staff are very friendly and helpful, though don't have much English. The added breakfast is good, though you can't have it tip after 8 or 830 (quite common in Spain). The rooms are clean and traditional. Never had to wait to use the shared coatroom.

Half beautiful, half out of the last century

I am torn about both the Hostal Luz Madrid and this review. From the pictures available on the Hostal Luz website the hostal rooms look beautiful, and, indeed, the private rooms with attached private bath are. What is not so beautiful are the rooms with shared bath. Different mattress (I could always feel springs), different sheets, no atmosphere whatsoever. And the staff kept telling me they would "show me the good rooms" so that maybe I would switch (which I did halfway through my stay) - for an additional 15 euros a night! No more "free upgrade" as on some reviews, now it is about the money. Also, nice as the staff are, they do not speak English beyond bare basics. They are SO sweet, but the language barrier was quite apparent. Go for the private rooms ensuite from the beginnings, and you will love it!

Good value if you keep an open mind

The location was great. The staff spoke no English but were very helpful. It was difficult to find because of being in the upper part of an apartment building. Taxi service was available plus free breakfast with churros and hot chocolate. Metro and bus stations and many city highlights are within walking distance. Rooms and beds but especially showers were tiny. Computers were available in the tiny lobby but printing was difficult. Keep an open mind with the Spanish way of doing things - the staff can come off as a bit stiff but when it comes down to important details they were so sweet and helpful. Rollaway bed option is advertised online but not really an Option as rooms are too small. To change a reservation online you may be charged a fee but when you do it in person with the owner you are much more likely to get a reasonable compromise in any situation of difficulty. Overall we would return if we needed a safe clean cheap place in a great location.

Just great location

It was the first time for me to stay at hostel for a family trip and overall, it was great. The owner lady was very kind to my kids even though she doesn't speak English. Great location with Opera metro station in two minutes, buffet restaurant and a little market in 30 seconds. It may be little bit difficult to find it.

Great location. Excellent value

Highly satisfied. The hotel was more than adequate and excellent value for money. While everything was fairly basic it was very clean, we received fresh towels during our 2 day stay. We opted for a shared bathroom which was fine and always clean. Breakfast in nearby location was again more than adequate. We would be very happy to recommend this facility or to use it again ourselves.

Wonderful value for money

Despite not arriving until 2 am, thanks to a seriously delayed flight, we were welcomed warmly. The room was spacious and immaculately clean. There was plenty of hanging space, drawers, a safe and a fridge. The bathroom was, again, immaculately clean. The towels were of good quality and were changed every day. There was soap, shower gel, shampoo and even a small 'dental hygiene' pack provided. Although the room was on the third floor there was a small lift so climbing stairs was not a problem. The Hostal is very centrally situated near the Opera House. Breakfasts were available in a little bar just around the corner in the square. There was a reasonable range of food available for breakfast along with tea or coffee and freshly squeezed orange juice.

Total misrepresentation. Our room was nothing like any photos. Total disrepair of showers and bed linens were threadbear All beds in room were cots. Staff was rude when we lost one breakfast voucher Considering making a Facebook page with all the pictures I took.

Clean and cozy

Small room but very clean. Location very good, close to Opera metro station, but far enough from main drag to be quiet at night. Breakfast was at very cute restaurant about 200 m from the hotel. Will stay next time I'm in Madrid

Noisy spot, nice folks

Stayed in the OLD part of the hotel. 1st room on the street was TOO noisy ALL night; couldn't sleep, earplugs wouldn't have been enough. Next room much quieter. Staff was very friendly, but next time we will book elsewhere. The place needs a lot of maintenance.

Bad customer service

I paid for a room with a private bathroom. Instead i got a room with a sink. They would not change the room. 2 of the shared showers were broken. No fridge. Clean room and convenient location.

Okay - but got to be better hostels in Madrid

A bit hard to find. First night my room wasn't available so I was put in a twin room, then had to move to my single room the second night. Okay stay, but nothing memorable. Would probably try another place if I return to Madrid.

Basic Bed

Half of this hostal is nice and modern and the other half is old. When you book you will be given the old half of the hostal. You will get what is described, but the photos are somewhat misleading. As you arrive, they will try to upsell you to the more modern rooms for more money. I wasn't sure they did this to others, but I overheard the same upsell conversation 2 others time while staying there. That said, I stayed in the older part and it is basic and cheap accommodation. It is clean, friendly, and well located.
