Best bang for your mid-class buck

It's a swanky place with a reasonable price and an amazing location. The people at the front desk can speak English, but not many other staff can. The facilities look well worn a bit, but are a timeless design. This is one of those hotel styles you often see in family movies. Just make sure you're on West Nanjing Road, not Beijing Road, the pin is incorrect.

Very disappointing disgusting hotel

The only good thing about this hotel was the friendly doorman and the location of which was very close to the metro and the East Nanjing Road. This hotel is old in a bad way, the lights were very dim, the furniture and the carpet looked like it had been there for 30 years, the superior room is small, dusty, damp, and dirty, but the main issue is the mold and smell. The air was filled with a very strong and hazardous moldy odor combined with cigarette smell, and visible mold growing in the bathroom that is a health hazard. I looked at two other rooms to see if they had the same environment and as I suspected, yes, they are. The air conditioner didn’t even control the temperature as it just controlled the speed at which the fan spins. The temperature is controlled by the main office so you can’t even adjust the temperature to your satisfaction. Don’t even bother to get any help from the receptionist as they barely spoke any English and weren’t polite at all. And thought the hotel is close to the metro, it is also close to a group and performers that blast their music just across the street into the evening every day. It’s also inefficient that the lobby is on the second floor, so have fun lugging your luggage up the stairs when the doorman if off duty. I would definitely not recommend this hotel as it doesn’t even know the basic principles of being clean, having maintenance, and providing generous costumer service. There are much better hotels to stay at in the area.

Nice hotel with traditional charms

Very nice renovated hotel in the center of city. It is in a historical building, one of the oldest hotels in the city. It has a lot of traditional charm, is close to Metro and pedestrian shopping street. The staff is friendly and helpful. One distraction during our stay is very loud music from performers across the street. It lasts for hours and late into the evening. This is something you should be aware if you choose to stay in rooms facing the street.

The room was very dirty with fluffy dirt in many places. The bathroom had mold in many places (ceiling, bath, etc). I asked either for my money back to go to another hotel (they did not accept) or for a room change and they were happy to downgrade my room without compensation and tehy could not provide a similar room or provide an upgrade. Given the status of the room I got (paid for Superior room) I accepted the downgrade to standard room which was OKish (no health hazard). With a little bit more money you can get a much better hotel.

This hotel is located at the People Square opposite the subway entrance and only minutes walk to the Nanjing Walking Street. The cleaness was excellent and the bathroom was spacious. There are steps from street level to the hotel entrance and the staff helped us to carry luggage up and down when we arrived and left. The only downside was that the exterior and interior lighting was dusky making it look gloomy with its already outdated appearance but other than that everything else was satisfied, the location is second to none!

A very good hotel in the 3* price band.

Pros: best location (shops, transport, etc), helpful staff, good food in its restaurant (Chinese), and shuttle service. Cons: two flights of entrance stairs (i.e., it requires some effort for moving heavy suitcases, there is usually a staff member to help), and decoration is a bit dated (but OK for us as we like the old Shanghai). Personal experience: The cafe/bar closed for some 10 days during the Chinese New Year period. We sometimes go to its sister hotel, Jin Jiang Park (international hotel) to have coffees. When there is a shortage of taxi, the customers of the hotels and shops on the east side of hotel have the advantage. So it would be better to walk eastwards for some 100 meters (~yards). We had a dark room facing inner courtyards.

distinguish hotel

The hotel has a long history, located at the center of Shanghai, very convenience of transportation, cuisine, tourism, entertainment, and etc. The room and its facilities are up to date. The only thing can be improved, maybe, should provide USB port in the room directly, instead of all the power plugin. Because in China, the voltage is 220V, not very popular, then for the electronic devices from other countries, direct USB plug, would be more convenient than power plug.

The Ji Jiang Pacific Hotel is a historic building that borders Shanghai's People's Square. The history and the beauty of the building was a big selling point. However, the hotel itself fails to be worth the price. Check-in process was fine, though we were unaware about a 500 yuan deposit. Very minimal English was spoken, and the bellhop expected a tip from us...even though that's not common in China. We had to usher him out of the room. The room, which unfortunately didn't face the park, was very dungeon-like and in beat-up shape. Wallpaper peeling, scratches and scuffs on all the furniture...but most of all, mold. There was mold in the bedroom and covering the bathroom. There was also mold visible in all the public areas. The room, which was advertised as non-smoking, smelled like smoke, as did all the hotel's public areas. We had a fantastic view of a stone wall out window, even though our room choice advertised a "room with a view." If you can't get a park-view room, don't even consider this hotel. The location IS fantastic, very close to Nanjing Road, literally across the street from People's Square. I really wish I could recommend this hotel due to the history, but it's simply not up to basic standards of cleanliness, maintenance or value.

Good location, comfy beds, stairs to get in

The hotel is right across the road from exit 8 of the People's Square metro station. Once arrived there is two flights of stairs to drag your bags up, no lift to get inside. There is a very strong but pleasant smell in the lobby when you arrive. The check-in staff were prompt and efficient, after check-in someone took our bags up to the room, I thought this was good service until he laughed at the person I was travelling with and poked their stomach because they are, lets just say it, on the large side. He then delivered our bags to the room and stood around awkwardly waiting for a tip. I have never tipped anywhere outside the US and had just arrived in the country so only had 100 Yuan notes, we told him we had nothing smaller to tip him with and he stood awkwardly smiling for another minute before we said goodbye and ushered him out of the room. Once inside the room is large, comfy beds and bathroom isn't bad. The hallways smelled of cigarettes but this smell doesn't come into the rooms. The only issue we had was the housekeeping being stingy with the toilet paper. One day we finished off one toilet roll and opened the spare one, the next day they didn't replace the spare roll we had used so by the end of that day, the only roll we had ran out, we had to ring up to ask for another toilet roll which was shoved in our face as we opened the door to housekeeping. Had they just replaced the spare roll when they cleaned the room it wouldn't have been an issue.

Time travel

This hotel needs a serious interior makeover. Looks like the furniture, carpet and bathroom have not been updated in 20 years. The room was very damp, even though the air-con was on 24/7. In Shanghai summer, when you return soaked in sweat, that's a no-no. The staff at reception spoke almost no English and smiling was clearly not part of their training. That said, if you like to travel in time, then maybe this is for you. The lobby maintains both the old heavy fake marble decor and the smell of yesteryears. Also, the wifi technology seems to date back 20 years.

Better than expected with lots of character

We stayed just one night in transit, and picked this hotel as it was just across the road from the subway exit (line 2, exit number 8: cross the street from the exit and go right about 50 metres). We had a room upgrade. Very nice room looking out to the street and park. Location was excellent for us, as we wanted to visit museums. It's 15 minutes to the Natural History Museum (strong emphasis on evolution), and 10 to the Shanghai Museum (noted for it's bronze collection). Many small eating places and restaurants just a street away; likewise shopping. Reception staff very helpful. Concierge was a little pushy on wanting to take the bags to the room (I had only a small roll-on), presumably for a tip.

Not accessible

This is an old building and there's no ramp at front of hotel where we can push our baby stroller. Our room is at the newer wing, which is behind the old building at front, but the new wing and old wing are not leveled. This means when we were assigned to new wing 5th floor, we need to take elevator at old wing to 5th floor and walk down stairs for half floor to go there. (Or take elevator to 4th floor and walk up half floor) Also, there are some staff smoking indoors. Our room is right next to a hallway where there is a staff room and always someone smoking there, and we can smell it in our room. When having breakfast at hotel restaurant, we noticed one of the cooks was smoking next to the kitchen door. Overall the room is ok, location is convenient, breakfast is not good (almost the same everyday), not accessible. I feel the management is used to cut corners and didn't try to improve its own standards. Just don't expect too much from them.

Excellent location for the metro network and Exit 8 at People's Square station and well located for walking Nanjing Road / The Bund area. English spoken fluently by reception staff. Interesting period building but problems

The Pacific is a fine example of art deco from 1926, but suffers greatly from a lack of concierge services. There was no dedicated concierge on duty at any hour. The desk clerks sought to be helpful but were not effective at working with us to help with taxis, directions, or recommendations for dining, shopping, and sightseeing. For this reason, if you do not speak any Chinese or are experiencing Shanghai for the first time, I'd recommend you stay elsewhere.

We were a family of 4 sleeping in a king bed. After they said on their website that the room could accommodate a family. They wouldn't give us any extra beds (rollaway etc) just said we had to take another room. I really didn't want the cost of another hotel room for 5 days and didn't feel comfortable putting my 11 year old and 9 year in a room alone. I would never stay in this hotel nor recommend to anyone. Adequate for a hotel, good staff

Overall, an adequate experience. I checked into the hotel at 2am, upon a late flight arrival. Hotel staff was friendly and quick to accommodate my requests, which I greatly appreciated as I was extremely tired from a full day of traveling. My only complaint was that when I tried to get the attention of the bell boy to assist me with my very large and heavy suitcase outside the hotel, he ignored me. Fortunately, I ran into a man I assumed was the manager and he provided assistance. He proceeded to enquire why I had not asked for assistance in front of the hotel and when I told him what happened, he immediately went and looked for the bell boy to address the situation. I was happy with my stay and the location of the hotel.

Service OK.

The service is OK, though the cleaning staff forgot to clean cups. The hotel itself is old and the room needs remodeling. The wallpaper is peeling off, and there seems to have mold in the bathroom. The whole hotel smells like it's been through flooding. The location is perfect though.

Excellent location

This hotel is located in the center of shanghai. It is very convenient for transportation. Stations for metro lines 1,2,8 are across the street. Line 2 is connected to international airport.

Best beds in China

After sleeping on rock hard beds for two weeks this hotel's beds were a welcome relief. Great location too, subway stop right across the street and within walking distance to the pedestrian mall and some great restaurants.

Nice Girls' trip

An old charming hotel with an old-world charm. It was THE HOTEL during its heyday where royals and big screen actors stayed. It is right in the center of town which is excellent. Walk every where. The staff were courteous and polite. The room was clean and the bathroom too. We were three women and we felt safe walking about. The concierge booked us to two-day trips which were excellent. We were in Shanghai for 10 days so wanted to stay at a more economical hotel that was centrally located. We ate out everyday and didn't get to see if there was any restaurant in house. Shopping is excellent. My cousin and my niece were impressed at my choice although they (and I) are seasoned travellers enjoying 5-star hotels. It was my treat so we had to be a little more conservative this time. We just cross the street to catch the city tour buses which was great! We also walked to the museum, dining, and shopping. Ideal location wiithout breaking the bank. My niece arrived a day later. We had no trouble requesting for an extra bed. The only disappointing things was that our room was at the back of a fire wall so there was absolutely no view. The curtains were, however, heavy so it didn't matter until you open the window. Anyhow, we were out most times and there wasn't a lot of time spent inside to have to look out the window.

Rotten service

I stayed here because of the area which is fantastic but when I asked them to tell me where the Cruise Ship Terminal was they ignored my request and served other people and would not help me. My husband finally after one hour went next door to another hotel and asked their Reservation people and got fantastic help, address written in Chinese and they got us a Taxi etc. I sent a letter to the Head Office of this Hotel but received no reply from them at all. NOT GOOD ENOUGH!

Roomy, comfortable, good value

We spent 5 days at this hotel and were quite satisfied with it. Our room was very large and comfortable with a king sized bed, high ceilings and windows that opened (we could look at and listen to musicians and dancers in the People's Park). Room 603 was more like a small apartment than a standard hotel room - it had a walk in wardrobe, long marble topped bench, good sized bathroom and an area that we used as a small breakfast kitchen (with fridge and electric jug). Included also were an iron and ironing board, safe, hair dryer and television. We often had to wait some time to be served by staff at the desk, who were not particularly helpful, but all of the concierges were very friendly and were as helpful as our non-existent Chinese and their limited English would allow. The Pacific Hotel is very conveniently located overlooking the People's Park. It is an old, early Shanghai hotel with interesting architecture and was more suitable for us than the modern, multistory, twice-the-price Radisson Blu next door (but the Radisson IS a very useful landmark that can be seen from a long way off)

Great experience!

We stayed in this hotel for 2 nights in August and we had a great experience there. When we exited from No 8 exit of People's Square subway station, the hotel was right in front of our eyes. The staffs were very helpful and room was decorated in a very unique old fashion way we haven't seen before. The bathroom is big and is one step higher than the rest of the room. The hotel is in the center of the city and half a block away from East Nanjing Pedestrian Road. We didn't eat in the hotel because there are plenty local eating places around the corner on Huang He Road. There is a travel agency downstairs at the street level.

Great location

The hotel was old but had a really nice feeling about it, and it was in a great location, across the road from the Big Red Bus and the peoples park, as well as being close to all shopping. Our beds were very comfy singles of a good size, and the room was big, which made the stay very enjoyable. The buffet breakfasts were also very good and a cheap price, making a good start to the day.

Very central hotel with big room.

We got upgraded to a city view room looking right into People Square and Grand Theater for US $15 more per night. Room is huge and clean. Staff with poor English but tried their best to help and maintain efficiency . We had to go to next door at Radisson hotel to book our tours as they don't have a tour desk here. Water pressure is weak but usable. Walkable to Nanjing East for shopping and to the Bund. Few steps to Metro and Hop on Hop off buse stop. Can't get better location than that. Hotel is very old but well maintained at very desirable price. We definitely will come back. Tip: book tour and exchange money next door at Radisson. We also found a very cheap and tasty restaurant next to the ice rink on 6th floor at the trendy New World shopping mall next to Radisson, which is very clean with steaming hot and flavorful food. They don't speak English at all but with English and pictured menu to chose from.

Convenience location-that's it

The hotel is located at West Nanjing Road so the location is great. (like the Times Square in New York) It has massive public transportations near by and many local shops that established from decades ago. The hotel self doesn't really have much spaces/facilities to explore consider it built for long time ago. The cleanness of the room and its hardware are not bad and if you want a view for the People Square you should ask the front desk before checking-in. I don't really have much conversation with the staff so I leave this part blank. Overall it is not a bad experiences for me. However, I will not choose this hotel next time on my trip to Shanghai. P.S. Hotels near the same location: Park Hotel and JW Marriott Hotel Shanghai Tomorrow Square Hotels I recommended: Hilton Shanghai, Jin Jiang Hotel Shanghai and Hotel Nikko Shanghai

Great hotel as a base for exploring Shanghai. It's not luxurious, but it's comfortable and clean and much more reasonably priced than some of its neighbours. It is also in quite an old building which gives it character.

A great way to save $50 a night in Shanghai

The location is PERFECT. The rooms - very much need an update, but clean. If $50 a night matters to you, and you are out and about all day, and just need a place to sleep and some LANDLINE internet, this is a fine place. NOTE: I was given a nearly windowless room - I went straight back to the reception and complained of a smoking smell. They then gave me a MUCH better room - two large windows without a view, but fresh air and no street noise. So, after 3 nights I had save $150 over if I'd been at a nicer hotel, with no harm done to my psyche or mood. The hotel has wonderful art deco architecture, though it could use some investment. And the breakfast? I've seen the praise, but I didn't go back! Not at all appetizing to me! Money would be better spent at Starbucks, about 200 meters away.

For the price, you can't beat it and stay in this location. It's close the heart of Shanghai for sure. It provides some western comforts and the room was huge and comfortable. As with many Chinese places, expect it to be smokey at times, not the most clean, but they take care of you and it's a great base.

Fine hotel near People's Park

Taxi drivers weren't familiar with the hotel. Be sure to have the name in Chinese. The lobby is one floor up from the entrance. If you have a lot of bags you have to go up to the lobby and have someone unlock the door and come out with a cart. They tried to upsell me to a room with a better view but the room I had was fine. Their breakfast wasn't very good. I ate out. They only give you two small bottles of water a day in a room for two.
