A Gem of a Hotel
This is a gem of a hotel. The area has been clean up a lot in the past couple years so it feel safe and cleaner for sure. Beautiful lobby. Walking distance to dining and shopping which is nice. Staff was very friendly. Bed was comfy!
We were there for an oncology dog appointment for my dog and the hotel said that it was pet friendly. The only issue we had there’s no place to take the dog to go to the bathroom. I asked the front desk and they said just take them out on the sidewalk And my dog is not used to going into the bathroom on the sidewalk with hundreds of people driving by and walking by so that was an inconvenience. Other than that everything was great.
As long as lobby goes, it’s emasculate. Staff is totally awful and extremely unhelpful. Not that they will not help you, even if they could, they will use anything they can in order to obstruct you and to additionally waste your time. They are dishonest, rude, and totally unworthy of the position they have. Brandon, Brandon’s manager (I forgot his name), and Virginia are all bad news. Virginia is a sneaky player. But her trashy treatment of another individuals, which is ultimately disrespectful, is easily figured out, even though she has developed good ways for her manipulations. Ivan

In theory the Hotel Spero looks boutique but once you check in to your room it’s obvious the renovation was a quick flip job. There’s a bit of dinginess that still hangs in the air, like it feels like you could smoke inside more recently than not and full remediation was never undertaken. That said, it was quite cheap and as we just wanted a place to crash for the night it did the trick.
Stayed at hotel multiple times, great price for what u get. Only drawback is best is hard and to firm for wife/me.
Love it despite minor imperfections
Love this place. Super convenient location. Comfortable, staff are really friendly and accommodating. Nice gym, great 6am coffee in the lobby. The key cards are a little annoying as they frequently get deactivated by proximity to electronics. The neighborhood street noise is a little annoying but I was able to tune out with earplugs. Overall nice design, feels elegant and modern for an older building, and a great price to be in downtown SF.
Property is hip and has an artsy vibe - room was large and clean - location is great and just a couple of minutes walk to Union Square/Chinatown. However, as this is downtown, unfortunately, and no fault to the hotel, it is surrounded by homeless people and inner city life. If this bothers you, especially at night walking out of your hotel, you may want to stay somewhere else. If you can look past it, this is a great option for staying in this area.
Updated and clean
We enjoyed our stay here. The room was clean and updated with trendy decor. The bathroom also clean and appeared to have been updated with trendy tile and glass doors. The room was outfitted with blowdryer, iron & board, small refrigerator. Coffee was offered downstairs in the lobby. There are USB outlets to charge your devices.
Great Stay
Comfortable stay one NYE. Cute room, great view. Bed could be more comfortable but not bad at all.
Book now. Great hotel w/ great value.
Great hotel. Helpful staff. Friendly. Front desk & security staff were super accommodating & offered great customer service.
Awful
Absolutely awful. The room had an odd smell to it, the bed was hard as a rock, and to top it all off… the Hilton, across the street, workers were on strike and the noise continued until 1am. Never again.
It was a gem in the middle of the rough part of the city, and I love the café
I’ve stayed here a few times, and it’s always a great experience. The staff is incredibly attentive and quick to assist with anything you need. The only downside is that parking isn’t included—you’ll need to use the garage next door, which costs $55 per day, but it works fine if you’ve arranged other transportation. On the plus side, they have a fantastic restaurant/bar downstairs. The rooms are spacious and well-maintained. Overall, a great place to stay!
Way smaller, very loud neighborhood and homelessness around the Hotel night and day. Also, horrible to find parking.
Great properly with great staff, friendly and professional, very clean hotel and rooms with unique vibe. Security in lobby
Good hotel!
Thanksgiving in sf
This is a very old property that was given a cheap facelift. Literally paint peeling off of woodwork sprayed over with fresh paint. Also got an additional charge after the fact. And didn’t use any additional services. Would not recommend at all.
Great location, lovely rooms
When we entered the hotel it smelled lovely, there’s a beautiful lobby and quite spacious for the city. Parking was literally next door and the check in process was quick. The room was clean and spacious for being in the city. Good location, we walked during the day and Uber in the evening. Will definitely stay here again.
It is a nice hotel, staff is friendly. Very convenient.
Nobody’s fault, really, but the noise from the Hilton workers across the street carried into my 6th F room. Just couldn’t catch my after-lunch nap.
booked the wrong day, rang to move to another night and was advised sorry , they need 72 hrs notice. could book another night at full price.they had the opportunity to provide great customer service and failed.
Room was huge and clean with a great view of the city, which I highly appreciate. Unfortunately, I was for expecting more given that I only received a bottle of wine for being an Expedia platinum member. Did not receive a room upgrade and I was not given any priority for early check-in or even on-time check-in since my room was not ready until about 3:30 PM.
.
We had a lovely stay at Hotel Spero. Our room was clean, comfy and quiet :) the staff were lovely and we were always greeted with smiles . Thank you for a lovely stay in San Fran
Rex the reception manager at our arrival was very friendly and helpful! The hotel is very well located we were able to walk everywhere but what differentiates one place from the other is the people and the service we received at Spero and particularly from Rex was outstanding! Thank you
Good stay, protestors across street were loud.
This was a great stay! Beautiful hotel and I loved the room! I will definitely be staying here again.
We were very disappointed with our room. It was tiny where the door would not open fully due to the bedside table. We requested for a room change but did not get any response. The check in was bad too as we were told that there was no booking in our name. We had to show our confirmation email for them to then find our booking. Not going to stay here again.
quite clean, and the carpets a little bit old ,air condition noised. Others all is good
We loved this wonderful place! We also got upgraded as soon as they know it’s was my husband birthday
We had a great stay at Hotel Spero. We were actually here 5 years ago, and our memories now are even better 5 years later. Thanks for the room upgrade, thanks for your hospitality, and thanks to the Jasper's staff for making us feel at home every day. We appreciate all of you and we hope to see you again soon!
Hotel Spiro is a great base to explore San Francisco. Links to transportation is so convenient making it very easy to get around the city, the iconic SF cable cars are only a few blocks away. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Free coffee available in the lobby every morning. We had breakfast at “Jasper’s” a restaurant/bar attached to the hotel, the food was just okay, but similar in price to other breakfasts available locally, we would suggest giving Jasper’s a miss and finding somewhere else locally. We will certainly use Hotel Spiro on our next visit!
great!
There has been a Union protest going on in front of the property. I normally don’t write a negative review, but this was a bit much. I couldn’t relax in my room at all. The union was banging drums and yelling into a microphone from 5am - 10 pm every single night. That should be the first thing the hotel tells you for check in.
Economical option near Union Square in SF
Nothing fancy and an older property, but very comfortable and well-maintained. Adjoining restaurant is great for routine breakfasts and lunches. Clean, with pleasant staff at front desk. My choice for comfortable option in central SF.
Beautiful building but bordering rough area
The hotel is a beautiful old building near many shops and restaurants but unfortunately borders an area where many people experiencing homelessness frequent. While we never felt unsafe, there was trash and human excrement on the sidewalks the entire stay. The rooms were beautifully decorated but older with some signs of wear and tear. Overall I would still consider it a good value for the price we paid but in the future would not stay in this part of town again.
Diamond in the Rough
I am taking time to comment because Hotel Spero is a hidden gem. We stayed despite earlier reviews that it was noisy outside and there are lots of homeless. The noise is being caused by a hotel union strike. Once in our room, it was pretty quiet as they were apparently confined to certain hours to protest. The homeless are basically on the edge of this property’s location, mostly in the Tenderloin. That area has always been an area of great homelessness. An ongoing issue for CA and the rest of the country. The Spero is beautiful and well-maintained. They have lovely staff, bending over backwards to give great customer service. The rooms are small, comfortable, well-appointed and modern. Their restaurant, Jaspers, is run by a GM who is focused on the customer, as well. Parking is in a garage next to the lobby so doesn’t get much more convenient than that. We will stay at the Spero again.
Anybody that ranks this hotel at a nine or above is completely out of their mind this hotel ranks on a three. Sick and tired of the fake reviews
Close to theater we were attending
I liked the view from the 17th floor.
Good hotel for price. Staff was great.
Convenient with cute rooms
The hotel is generally fine and centrally located with an independent feel. The lobby and halls looked a bit older than expected with a not great looking, but not busy pub vs restaurant downstairs. It is also at the edge of the Tenderloin so you will get the usual characters and dirtiness on the street. That said, I walked to Moscone Center/Yerba Buena Center daily (12 min) for a conference and heading toward Union Sq vs straight down to Market is a nicer route. Staff was nice and friendly. The lobby was generally nice with work stations, free coffee and tea in the am and a water machine for drinking water. The room was cute, we got a free upgrade to a King room (not huge but reasonable size), and it seemed renovated and clean. Seems to attract a lot of tourists from around the world who were friendly. There were protests at the Hilton across the street, when we stayed, so it was slightly noisy, but there were no protests at our hotel and the windows mostly blocked the noise! It seemed to be a citywide protest at the big hotel chains only.
Decent
Nice property in a good location and close to most everything. Staff was nice and room was clean with a nice view
Kathryn at the front desk is amazing. She is helpful and professional.
Not sure how this property gets top reviews. The sofa in our room was stained and there was a strange odor in the room. There was no steam iron, no closet, no laundry bags, no coffee maker, and no room service cards. There a noisy protest happening outside almost all day and night. The front desk guy looked disinterested and tired. Parking is a few feet away in another facility. Although the board said 40!USD per day I was asked to pay 50 USD. I did not receive any VIP perks as the front desk guy said there was none applicable. Overall disappointing .
The first room we checked into the TV and A/C was not working properly. That night we transferred to another room and the A/C did not work in that room either. We slept in that room for the night and we were miserable, especially since San Francisco was experiencing a heat wave at the time. The next morning we asked to be moved to a new room. The new room was upgraded the A/C worked and they also removed the resort fees for both nights. The staff was nice. Not sure if we would stay there again though.
Gorgeous boutique hotel. Clean and quaint
The staff needs to be more attentive, the setup the morning coffee stations at 7:00 am but some people leave the hotel earlier, they should have the coffee stations starting at 5:00 am.
Avoid spero hotel, they keep your deposit no matte
The bed was uncomfortable and they kept half of my security deposit without telling me why. When I tried to reach them, I stayed on hold for fifteen minutes and never got to speak to anybody. No parking offered either.
Good stay. Will be back - great hotel room!
.
We loved our room and the size of our bathroom. We will definitely stay here again.
Very artsy 😊
Never Again.
I had a terrible experience at this hotel. When I tried to call to let them know I will be late to check in, it took us calling the hotel 7 times in order to get a hold of someone. Once we got there, while checking in, they informed us of the protestors across the street that have been banging trashcans and sounding off bullhorns starting at 7am and lasting all day and night. This should have been an email to mentally prepare us for what was happening. I talked to them about switching rooms the next day but ended up staying in the room that I was in. On the last day of my stay, I went to my room that evening after being away the entire day, and my door wasn't shut, they left it open with all my valuables in there. There are a few additional things that happened which I will be emailing the hotel directly about, but I will never stay at this hotel again and there needs to be accommodations made for the experience.
Hotel Spero is not rally on Union Square but fairly close. Good value for the price. Very friendly, helpful staff.
Cute and quaint hotel.
Old,small room,
The hotel and staff were warm and welcoming. Unfortunately, the Hilton strike across the street was so loud and constant, which impacted our sleep and overall enjoyment of being at the hotel.
Nice Hotel
Nice Hotel. Most of the staff was friendly. The manager in charge of housekeeping was not friendly - he was filling in at the front desk and didn't seem happy at all about having to do that. It's obvious that he is not a people-person and needs to be kept away from direct contact with customers.
The hotel was lovely and had great character, the rooms were clean and the service was fast and efficient. However I would never stay at this hotel again. We were repeatedly warned about the risks of the streets surrounding the hotel and we appreciated this but I would not choose to stay in a location where it is dirty and unsafe right outside the hotel door. We were hoping to have quick access to Union Square, but the streets between it and the hotel were far from desirable and we were advised to walk there at our own risk. To top this off, there was a hotel strike outside of the Hilton (across the road from this hotel), the noise caused by this was highly disruptive starting at 6am and going to 10pm. This disrupted our schedules and our sleep. I know the hotel could not control the strike noise, however if we had been advised of this prior to arriving we definitely would have changed to another hotel in another location
The staff were very helpful and the rooms were clean and had everything we needed. The surrounding area felt dirty and unsafe.
I would suggest they allow you to cast from a phone or laptop to the TV. I was preparing for a work presentation and that would have been very helpful. Most hotels allow this so I would think the Spero would want to be competitive. Not a huge deal if on a pleasure trip but was very inconvenient in this case. Other than that is was a great stay.
Location is great except expensive overnight parking
Great location, staff were friendly and helpful. Room was smaller than expected but overall no complaints. The adjacent hotel (Hilton) had a protest going on from 5am till late evening. Our room was on the top floor and could still hear it. We appreciate this was out of Hotel Spero’s hands.
Recommend. Have stayed before and find it works for my needs. I like a high up room for quiet. Large windows. Good views. One of my go-tos in Union Square. Ignore the neighborhood. It's better than it looks at times. Totally safe.
Nice hotel, located near to Union Square and just on the edge of Tenderloin. Rooms were a good size for a city centre with comfy beds and all the staff were lovely. Free coffee in the lobby in the morning was quite welcome and made up for the absence of any facilities in the room.
Not bad for San Francisco
Small but nice room. AC could have worked better, but all in all a nice stay.
There was strike at the hotel across the street that was playing sirens and banging drums all day from 7am to 10pm They should have communicated this to guests checking in and given them a chance to book elsewhere. You couldn’t sleep or be in your room without hearing the banging and chanting The bathroom was also not planned well with half the sink around a pillar and you could not stand in front of the sink.
Choose a different hotel and neighborhood
Hotel Spero is a small, old renovated hotel that is nice and clean inside, but it’s in a rough neighborhood, Tenderloin, and there were hoards of homeless people everywhere on the streets. There were also 2 other hotel cleaning staffs picketing across the street from 7am-10pm blaring sirens, yelling, drumming, and keeping our family awake. I spoke to the front desk and said we completely understood that they need to picket for better wages, but that we weren’t going to stay for the next two nights at the hotel and needed a refund for our remaining two nights. She told us to contact hotels.com who contacted the hotel management and refused our request, only offering to move us to a higher floor, which wouldn’t have accomplished anything. Stay in Nob Hill or Fisherman’s Wharf or basically any other neighborhood, unless you enjoy covering your ears all night and dodging hundreds of people living on the street right outside. The bathroom and room were also very tiny.

Clean, Updated, Botique
Great boutique hotel! Updated and clean
Ok stay for us. The room was nice but not really air conditioned. There was also a workers protest across the street which started at 5am, waking us.
Best-kept secret in SF
Amazing place and people!
Small rooms, not a nice area around hotel
Wouldn’t recommend staying in union square at all. Protesters outside the Hilton making lots of noise and only a street down there are lots of homeless people who appear to be on drugs … of course none of this is the fault of the hotel. The hotel appears nice from the reception area. The rooms are small. Look like they could do with a deep clean. And the air con is unable to be adjusted in the room so was really hot at times. We had dinner at jaspers one night… service was slow and we were literally the only ones in there. However hotel staff are friendly and there is a water refill station in reception which is nice. Overall wouldn’t recommend staying.
The hotel itself is excellent – modern rooms, cleanliness, and friendly staff who are always ready to help. Inside, everything is very comfortable, and it’s clear that the hotel maintains high service standards. However, it’s worth mentioning that the area around the hotel leaves much to be desired. There are a lot of homeless people on the streets, and the atmosphere outside is, to put it mildly, not very pleasant. The neighborhood feels like a real ghetto, and going out in the evening can be uncomfortable. If you plan to stay here, it’s best to be prepared for this kind of environment. Overall, if you’re planning to spend most of your time inside the hotel or traveling by taxi, it shouldn’t be a major issue.
The hotel charged me additional 30$ as a deposit and still didn’t refund it (it’s already 13 days passed from my visit) .
Good location for site seeing!
Beautiful decor, super friendly, luxurious lobby and rooms. Only complaint was the lack of room service.
The hotel was quite nice. Outside the property is quite loud at night due to homeless playing loud music all night.
Modern interior and super clean close to Union Square. No issues with HVAC or plumbing. Parking off-site for additional fees.
They need to fix the elevators
Housekeeping was great/timely, cool lobby, roomy suite, had the amenities we needed and was in a good location for getting around. (Homelessness wasn’t horrible right around the hotel. Other reviews had us worried).
Very clean
The hotel itself was great, friendly staff. I’d rather have a coffee maker in my room than the station downstairs.
We enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Spero. Rooms were comfortable and clean. Staff were very friendly except one person. We had no problems with the area and walked out at night. Just don’t go too far down Taylor street. Convenient for trams, busses and BART
Stylish and well appointed room. Very comfortable bed. Great location. Great price/value.
It’s the second time we’ve stayed here. Super convenient for what we were doing. My only complaint has nothing to do with the hotel itself. But the Hilton down the block has striking workers that were making a bunch of noise until 10pm and started again at 5:30 am. (I fully support the striking workers!) But I didn’t get much sleep. The hotel itself is nice, staff is friendly. I would make sure the strike is over before booking a room here again
While the neighborhood itself is not the best, the hotel was clean, comfortable and the staff was super helpful and welcoming.
Very kind and friendly staff. Beautiful ceilings.
The staff were very friendly and helpful throughout our stay. The hotel and rooms were in an excellent condition. We would happily stay here again
The area is completely out of control and completely unsafe. To have to pay so much money to stay in Gotham City is just unbelievable
Good. Very hard to reach front desk by phone, in the hotel or from outside. Suite was nice.
Great hotel. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Would book this hotel again. Walkable to most tourist attractions.
We had workers strike across the street they yell around late and start early around 4am , it was frustrating especially if you are tired and need to sleep
- TV didn’t work - bed and sheets were not comfortable
The check in and check out is very fast and the location is very close to a lot of attractions.

Stay here.
One of my favorites.
