Beautiful property with a very peaceful environment. Loved that they provide all the ingredients to make breakfast in your room/studio (especially because food shopping can be difficult in Vieques). Staff is very pleasant and extremely helpful. Will definitely return!
A beautiful and unique place.
Great hotel. Quiet and spacious. Trees and pool. You might need to call a cab to go to restaurants. But everything relatively close like 10-20 mins drive
beautiful, serene, secluded, nature
Hix Island House is a property like no other we've visited. If you are looking for tranquility and beauty, without all the noise technology brings, this is the place for you. Become one with nature as you are surrounded by beautiful tropical plants, trees, iguanas, and horses. Delight in the star lit sky from there pool and try to count them all...just don't forget your bug spray! That would be the only draw back. However, it's well worth it!
It's a concrete box with a garage door. They put zero effort into making it comfortable. The limited furnishings is cheap patio chairs, the bed is a futon-like mattress. They claim open air ventilation, that just means the one ceiling fan is only for looks (only low speed) and that you have to sleep with the garage door open. Found a scorpion on the toilet. And the big wood doors are warped so that the entire building hears you trying to close them. Everything echoes because it's only concrete. The amenities are only available if your lucky enough to catch the office open. They want to charge you $500 for make up on the towels! These are very cheap towels - even on an island, at best they cost $10. I hated it.
Stunning
This place was a gem. We're already plotting our next trip back. It was good for our souls. Thank you for your hospitality and lovely setting
I loved this eco-friendly place. It is a unique, quiet place, surrounded by nature, perfect to disconnect. As a suggestion, in the Redonda 2 room they could fix the bathroom door that does not fit very well into the frame. But overall, it is definitely a place I would like to return to.
Wow oh wow! What an experience!!! Being able to see all the stars in the sky, hear the wildlife, and showering outdoor!!! Staff was helpful, responsive, and available anytime we needed something. I’d go again and again!
Hix Island House is a masterful work of Art. The large open windows feel like panoramic screens opening to the lush hillside of the property. The shape of my room captured the sounds of birds as they moved around the flowers. The shower in my room was covered in climbing figs and a couple of curious, beautiful galliwasp lizards would visit me there each morning. The pool was refreshing and the perfect depth for swimming up the eastern edge for restful views of the ocean. Service was top-notch, the staff there very attentive to anything you need. The fridge was stocked with eggs, milk, bread, and plenty of coffee. Hix Island House has everything you need to enjoy Vieques, plus all the things you didn’t realize you needed like aesthetics, soul-rest, and spiritual indulgence in a natural landscape. Again, this space is a work of Art. It’s like glamping in a Paul Gauguin painting.
Perfect for relaxing and disconnecting
BEAUTIFUL brutalist design on this private property. We were pleasantly surprised to get a room upgrade to one of their Solaris rooms with an ocean view. The design of the space was very cool and thoughtful. Ecofriendly, sustainable, natural open design with open windows (can close) for a natural night breeze. We especially loved the outdoor shower under the night stars (almost no light pollution on Vieques!). It was clean and very comfortable! There’s a pool on the grounds we didn’t have a chance to swim in but it’s gorgeous and a great place to relax overall. The women who run the place are very sweet and accommodating. This very private property was off the beaten path, but just about everything in Vieques is a 10 to 20 minute drive from anywhere. Do not stay here if you don’t rent a vehicle—you will not be able to find a ride anywhere on the island after like 7pm and even then they aren’t guaranteed. the roads are narrow, two way, it is pitch black at night, and there are stray dogs and wild horses everywhere so won’t be a fun or safe walk. Will stay here again!!!
This was an excellent hotel. We enjoyed the room we had which featured an outdoor concept. Enjoyed nature and the animal noise and bird song.
Nature contact and good environment.
Great place to disconnect and recharge
Beautiful and quiet. Excellent and attentive staff. They follow up personally upon arrival and during stay. Upgraded and loved it!
The property is gorgeous, rooms are clean and well stocked. Staff was responsive when we contacted them. Would definitely stay again!
If you want something out of the box, Hix house is the place to stay. No complaints.
Amazing place , definitely a do over
Love it.
.
Cool property. Open room.
Beautiful place for profound journeys. The staff is beyond words…just for your understanding I will say AMAZING!
Hix is always a tranquil place to stay. As the property ages, they need to keep up with repairs in the rooms. In Rodonda 2, where I stayed, there were issues with screws coming out of the walls that held doors closed, and none of the knives in the cooking utensils were very usable - they should put higher quality cooking utensils in the rooms. Overall, this place is quiet, serene, and the service is top quality. But little things, like putting hand soap in the bathrooms and cleaning the rooms each day would elevate it back up to the lux stay it used to feel like.
My stay at the Hix house was everything I hoped for! Impeccable Cleanliness and Maintenance, Rooms were spotless, and the facilities were well-maintained. The staff were attentive and went out of their way to ensure that I was comfortable.
Sublime.
This was an amazing experience. An open suite on an open area. I loved seeing the horses and sharing nature with them. I also love that the hosts/staff/management will keep in touch with you as you’ll probably be too busy enjoying the island life to keep in touch with them. They keep you updated, ask if you need anything, and are great with accommodations. 10/10 stay, will be staying here again when I come back!
Highly recommended
The Hix Island House is a gem away from the more “touristy” areas of Vieques. The rooms and grounds are unique and quite beautiful. It rained periodically through our stay but that only enhanced the natural feel of the place.
Staff greeted me with smiles and hellos upon arrival. Personable, attentive and flexible to my requests and questions. Feels like a very safe and relaxing environment. Clean room with stocked fridge with juice coffee bread jellies to get your morning started.
Excellent!
Fantastic truly hard to describe has to be experienced. Lying in bed and watching the night sky through an open portal. But mostly thank you to Carmen who manages the property and took such an amazing by care of me.
Excellent property if you want to disconnect from day to day. Friendly staff.
If you're looking for a relaxing quiet kind of off the grid stay this is for you. We stayed in polaris 4. Beautiful view of the night sky. Used a golf cart to drive from the ferry to the island house and around the island. Borrowed the beach chairs and cooler that they offer which was very convenient. Great time!
Pronto volveré me encanto toda el área y el personal trata a las personas con amabilidad
Pleasant and Peaceful
We only stayed 2 nights, so I don't think we fully experienced everything this place had to offer, but we really enjoyed our time there. It was very quiet and comfortable. The architecture is very cool, and the way it was designed really did seem to keep the place quite cool even without AC. It was fun to see all the wild horses grazing on the lawn and fall asleep to the noises of the coqui frogs. The showers are sort of indoor/outdoor...covered, but open to the elements. It was a very cool experience to shower while stargazing. Beds were super comfortable. They don't mention breakfast anywhere in their literature, but based on what I read from other guest reviews, I was a little disappointed by the breakfast. I was expecting a variety of tropical fruits, and they only had oranges when we were there. But, regardless, it was nice to be able to eat a quick breakfast right at the hotel and get going with our day. Food options on the island are a bit limited so it would have been a bit inconvenient to have to find a place for breakfast each day. Overall, a very nice experience. I would recommend and consider staying here again if I'm ever lucky enough to get back to Vieques island!
The rooms were really clean. The grounds were great. Beautiful architecture.
The architecture of the property is stunning. Although knowing we are in the Caribbean mosquitos and lizards, and even spiders I could handle, they provide a mosquito net over bed. However when going to sleep we noticed a giant beetle inside our net. I was not a fan and had to book something else. This was not mentioned and I was offered no refund to my stay.
Second stay but will try different place next time
The property was comfortable enough but is showing signs of age. Front desk and yoga were great! We are last minute travelers and that may be the cause we felt less value for this property.
The most secluded and serene property, on top of the mountains with the ocean showing on the horizon. Unbelievable architecture amid lush green mountain top. Definitely unforgettable!
Hix House has to be one of my favorite stays of all times. The rooms and grounds are beautiful as they are unique. The staff really is the greatest team, that ensured your stay is unforgettable. Carmen and Marie went out of their way to make sure we had what we needed. I suggest taking Maureens yoga class, she was awesome! Disfrutar!
Me encanto todo .
We hated this property so much we checked out after one night. We had bugs everywhere and the room was very hot. I've stayed in other eco friendly properties before but this one was way too "economy" for the price. Had to sleep in mosquito nets, they provided only small fans for each side of the bed. The garage type of door was dangerous to operate and if we closed it entirely to keep bugs away, it was too hot. Just not the right property. The area was extremely remote and was difficult to find our actual room. Do not check in off hours because you will likely get lost. The two towns on the island were very run down and service at the restaurants was extremely slow. Will not return.
Great-looking buildings.
Simply AMAZING!
All I can say is this place is AMAZING!! The views! The openness and simplicity of the rooms! The vibe! What a wonderful place to stay and as they say - EXPERIENCE! Note - there are no tvs, and you’ll hear nature doing it’s thing at night, which I loved!
Hix Island is a magical place! Architecture is very successfully stitched with nature. If you want an off grid experience with convenience, this is the place! Every building is unique and fun to stay but I highly recommend Solaris 2 or Solaris 4. It has an ocean view and the balcony has an open roof so you can lay down and watch the stars at night. The room has two large openings to provide natural cross ventilation, it’s breezy at all times. There’s also a small pool at the property which is a bless, it has a gorgeous view. The hotel provides a full fridge with everything you need to make breakfast such as fresh bread, butter, milk, coffee, fruits, eggs. I highly recommend yoga with Maureen-it’s a life changing experience. She’ll tell you all about yoga and take you to a spiritual journey. This is my second time at Hix Island and I highly recommend staying there!
Perfect
A great experience to rest, relax and connect with nature. Mesmerizing architecture. Very private. Is in the center of the island, highly recommend to rent a car.
Loved it!
Excellent Experience
The manager Carmen and her sister Chinita went above and beyond to make sure I had a good stay. They were so kind and helpful with everything. I rarely write reviews but I sincerely appreciate their hospitality and it deserves recognition.
Amazing stay!
Great to place to have a retreat
Its my third time and we will continue staying here
Loved how you feel in this property is serene romantic and beautiful. You can never get tired of the view solaris. Carmen really welcoming and accommodating soon I will be back. Only thing I recommend is better pedestal fans and take more care of the pool and of the poop of horses.
My husband and I stayed for four nights in May during our honeymoon. We loved it! We loved the open air concept and overall stayed pretty cool with the provided fans. We didn't really use the mosquito net over the bed, as the breeze kept them away on all but one night. I do think that staying on a higher level floor probably helps with the increased breeze and decreased insects. The staff brought us new eggs, juice, and bread all but one of the days. The pool was very nice, and although it did have some leaves in it from all the beautiful trees that surround the property, it didn't bother us at all. We'd definitely stay again!
Beautiful environment!
This place is stunning — from the minimalist architecture to the nature in the property (horses anyone?!) and makes it a very unique stay for design lovers. The atmosphere is peaceful and serene and the staff very helpful.
Had a great stay. Great location on the island and staff was welcoming. Room was great and unique experience.
Bugs everywhere
The architecture and location are beautiful and we were pleasantly surprised to get a free room upgrade upon arrival. But the open air concept means you’re basically camping/glamping so for the price it’s not worth it. No AC. There are bugs everywhere all the time—in the pool, in the rooms, in your bed. The net around your bed isn’t just for romance. Housecleaners didn’t provide soap in the bathroom. I’m 80% sure I got bit by bedbugs. Service is overall friendly and responsive but unless you find sleeping outside comfortable, I recommend elsewhere.
Very unique property - limited frills (no AC, no TV, etc), but secluded, quiet, beautiful mountain breezes, fantastic retreat, great views. Really loved it.
The Hix Island House is a unique and tranquil experience up and away from the hustle and bustle of town. Designed to be an off-grid, unplugged experience, and staffed by cheerful and helpful folks, I would absolutely stay there again.
Loved it.
Absolutely gorgeous place, loved the architecture. Staff was extremely helpful and accommodating, booking a taxi for our arrival and then updating it and setting up an easy after hours checkin when we missed our original ferry. It’s open air - which we loved - constant breezes, gorgeous views!!( but it may not be for everyone since there is no a/c or conditioned spaces, you can hear your neighbors, and lizards and birds and mosquitos do come in). We were able to disconnect, listen the birds and famous croquis and hope to return soon for longer.
Hix is a great place to stay. Is peaceful, with lots of beaches to choose from.
I want to come back and stay here again
Wonderful getaway.
Hix House is beautiful, serene and intentional. The spaces are well thought out and calming. We never turned a light on. It was too wonderful being one with nature! This is NOT a resort… more a retreat. We went mid March and had no problems stating cool enough in evenings. Loved having eggs, bread and fruit available to us every morning. Our stay exceeded our expectations!
I cried when I left. Carmen and Maria are super accommodating. The place is gorgeous. It really is for nature lovers. If you don’t love camping, maybe don’t go. The rooms are absolutely gorgeous. I was worried it was going to feel cold from all the cement but somehow it felt warm and beautiful. Plenty of crosswinds with the fans on too so not hot at night. The stars at night were incredible. Just the whole experience was intensely moving. The bed is super comfortable too. The pool is beautiful. Not enough things to say about it.
Website pics need updating
We arrived at hix, to a room we had paid £200 a night for, to the room looking nothing like the website. I had booked it 3 months in advance and was very excited, we’d booked for 5 nights The room was dark and the lights that did work were cold, the shower and toilet room was really dire and quite frankly looked like a prison, it looked like the room hadn’t had a lick of paint and update since the build. And the website photos show it from 20 years ago, the website does not show the reality and needs updating. The next morning our view was amazing. really beautiful but the room just wasn’t what I had booked and worth the money We went to see Carmen the manager and she helped us out straight away, she understood our disappointment and upset, moved us into a much nicer and much more maintained room. It was everything I was expecting from my stay at hix it was lovely. The outside showers are a real nice touch we loved the outdoors. Hilda from housekeeping was also super nice and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. Thank you Carmen for being a gem!
This place was amazing.. i will definitely visit again
Carmen was very friendly and helpful and our room had a gorgeous view! You won't regret staying here if you want to go "off grid" for a bit
Beautiful architecture and people working there
The pool wasn’t clean other than the place is amazing
Quiet, relaxing Pool needs cleaning thou.
Beautiful and Unique property that always leaves us wanting to stay more time. Has all amenities needed to come back home fully refreshed.
Like be eco, clean apartment, fair outside facilty as poor lawn maitance. Breakfast bread first day, after, none.
My second time here, fantastic low key ambiance to be in touch with nature without “hardship”. Excellent appt. Spacious and open w privacy
Quiet place!!! We really enjoyed the pool
The Hix Island House is an amazing place to stay! The minimal and natural yet modern design was exactly what we were looking for! The staff were extremely kind and helpful.
Un paraiso escondido
Peaceful Retreat: Recharge your being
If you’re all about nature, earth protection and admiration this place is for you. Upon check in Edgard gracefully upgraded our room so we could have better views and more breeze. My husband doesn’t sleep without AC; however, he was able to sleep well. The kitchen was so gorgeous and huge that had to use it. They provide with coffee, eggs, bread, olive oil, orange juice, butter and cremora which was good on days that finding an open restaurant could be a challenge. Bed was comfortable, shower is outdoor but private. Loved the simplicity and elegance. Cons: birds could be louder than expected, and May wake you up earlier than desire. You’ll need transportation because is 10-15 away from restaurants, beaches, etc.
Love the property, the staff, and the amenities! Great place for a tropical getaway! It was more than we expected.
Excelente servicio y el lugar es hermoso!!!
We were blown away by the Hix Island House. Our room (more of an apartment than room) was open to the cool breezes. The outdoor shower overlooked the jungle and ocean. The grounds were full of flowers, fantastic architecture, and horses. There are stairs. There is horse poop. You make your own breakfast. But if you're looking for a serene, slow place that makes sitting in the breeze as much part of the experience as doing activities, you can't do better.
THIS PROPERT IS COMPLETELY UNDER RATED. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL AND CALM. IF YOUR LOOKONG FOR A PLACE THATS INE WITH THE ENVIRONMENT THIS IS IT. IF YOU NEED A CALM GETAWAY THIS IS IT. NOT TV NO PHONE. A GETAWAY AWAY FROM EVERYTHING. LOVED IT THE FOTOS DO NO JUSTICE ON HOW AMAZING THIS PLACE IS. I CANT WAIT TO VISIT AGAIN.
It has a certain tranquility which you won't find at other properties which are closer to the shore. Location is center of Vieques, so nothing is walkable. I liked the open concept where you can be with nature. If you need super speed internet or no insects at all then this isn't the place for you. But if you need to relax then it's THE PLACE.
We fell in love ❤️with Hix Island house. We loved staying at triangular Matisse, the space was open and the views incredible. Having that top patio area is so special we were able to do some stargazing. As a couple it does give you the opportunity to disconnect from everything and just be with each other is very romantic. Like prev reviews the A/C is not necessary since there is always a cool breeze. The food provided to make your own breakfast is great and was a plus having the amazing views. The staff are super friendly and helped with recommendations. We really enjoyed our stay and will plan to be back on August. We also enjoyed seeing the horses around the property.
The area is very quiet. The hotel is super cool
Romantic Getaway ♥️
Wonderful wonderful place to relax and enjoy all that nature has to offer. Peaceful place to unplug with your loved one. Beautiful. My husband and I greatly enjoyed ourselves at this place.
amazing and magical experience.
Definitivamente volveremos a hospedarnos en este hermoso lugar. La atención es increíble. El aire acondicionado no es para nada necesario. Es un lugar magico 5 estrellas ⭐️
Wonderful kind people and such a gorgeous place to stay! The manager and attendants checked in consistently and gave me space while I spent nine days making the space a home. So lovely.
This place is amazing. If you are looking for stress free, noise free vacation this is the place. We were worried a little bit because it had no A/C but you do not need it. I totally recommend this location. We asked for late check-out and they responded quickly.
Es una experiencia inolvidable, el que esta buscando salir de lo normal y tener momentos de paz y relajación este es el lugar. Servicio excelente y desayuno incluido y variado. Se los recomiendo.
Cannot wait to return
This hotel was amazing. We cannot wait to return. It was more beautiful and serene than the pictures can convey.
Loved everything about Hix Island House. Gorgeous minimalist architecture that takes in the beautiful scenery and doesn’t detract from its natural surroundings. Bread was delicious every morning. Pool is lovely and staff very helpful and kind. Quick drive to all beaches and close to the Tin Box restaurant that was a highlight of our trip.
Best place in the world
This is Vieques' best kept secret, I am almost hesitant to review it so positively because I want to keep it just how it is. It is impossible to get to the property without transportation- so expect to get a taxi or your own vehicle. The property is fabulously lush, inviting you to relax the moment you enter the property. The different buildings are unmarked, so make sure you listen to the front desk person when they tell you where to go. The architecture of each building is fluid and open, but the clever design creates the illusion of exposure while maintaining your privacy-- I loved the outdoor shower, overlooking the beautiful swaying palms and drooping bougainvilleas. The breakfast stocked in the fridge was honestly phenomenal- the artisanal bread was so flavorful and soft, the butter was perfectly creamy. Even though the space was entirely exposed to the elements, we had no issues with bugs or the occasional passing band of rain. It was beautiful. Honestly, the highlight of our trip to puerto rico. We almost changed our itinerary to allow us to extend our stay. When I say I would come back in a heartbeat, I am not exaggerating.
Unique Stay
It is a wonderful and unique stay. Service of the hotel staff was great. Overall and very nice place to stay for a new experience.
It was like staying in a luxurious concrete tree house. The open view was breathtaking at sunset. It was a unique memorable experience from the outdoor shower to swinging bed with a canopy.
its a beautiful place, great architecture, peaceful. the only thing is the pool was out of order and had been before we arrived. probably will be for a few months from the look of it. they gave us a little credit when I asked for it but we should have been contacted about this in advance. the managers are very very lovely.
The property and grounds are beautiful. We stayed in Solaris 6 which is a building with six units. Because of the concrete structure you could hear every door open and close through the building and throughout the night. Any movement on the concrete floors was heard throughout the building. The opening and closing of the window gates could be heard throughout the building. When there was absolutely no movement or doors opening and closing the property is amazing.
