I stay here as a treat to myself to recharge and relax!..it’s always a lovely stay!..the staff are excellent and it’s a consistently high standard!..I look forward to my next stay!..
Nice big hotel but dating . Staff nice enough but reception was eating dinner while trying to book me in. Tv remote batteries did not work. Would I stay there again ? Probably not by choice
Enjoyable stay
Arrived late and left relatively early so didn't get to see a lot of the hotel, service though was excellent, friendly and welcoming. Breakfast was fresh and plentiful and hotel was clean. Comfortable bed and a good night's sleep.
Very friendly and helpful staff.
Great staff lovely room nice and quiet ,easy parking a lovely two night stay
Nice hotel that just needs a little work.
The first thing i will say is that the staff are lovely and very good and the restaurant and bar was nice. The wifi was also very good. However, a couple of points to improve on, the car park is mainly mud, if youre wearing smart shoes, you will get filthy shoes getting in and out of your car if its been wet. I booked two rooms, one was warm and cosy in the Stables, and the other in the main house was cold. I reported it to reception but nothing was fixed that I requested an additional radiator but it was powerful enough to keep the room warm but the outer walls had a lot of damp. There was no heating in the bathroom, the bathroom window didn't seal so it let lots of cold air in and so the bathroom was very cold. I think if both rooms had been in The Stables it would have been very different.
Great place, cosy rooms, clean and comfortable!
Fabulous place to be!
Fabulous stay. All aspects of the hotel are good. Beautiful setting, very friendly staff and very comfortable room
Staff, food, accomodation all first class. We will be back
The building has character as it was old but needs a little TLC. For the price it was worth it and I would stay again. The staff were friendly and the room was clean.
Tired but nice hotel at a cheap price. Great staff
Hotel is tired like many of these old hotel buildings, but certainly no worse than many I have stayed in. Bed was very comfy, room was warm and bathroom was clean and well stocked with toiletries. We moved rooms as the plumbing from the neighboring room made a lot of noise everytime they used the bathroom. The lady on reception was super, appologised and moved us without any fuss. Price was very cheap so I have no complaints about the standard of room we received. We will stay again next time we are in the area.
One night business trip stop over 7/10
Lovely quiet hotel
Fantastic place, have stayed before and would definitely stay again. Only issue was the wi-fi was very poor in my room and kept cutting out
Booking was mixed up but quickly sorted. Room was clean, spacious and comfortable. Had an evening meal which was nice. The lady on breakfast service was lovely, nothing was a problem, breakfast was delicious and there was plenty to choose from.
Characterful and countryside perfection
Perfect spacious room for family of 4 and collie dog with lovely historical features 👌
And they did a banging breakfast
q
Well priced
Not impressed
Not .very impressed. Asked for an extra pillow, just 3 on the bed .Was told ,we dont have any because we a. re cutting down on laundry bills also bulb not working in bedside lamp ,was told will have to wait till tomorrow, no maintenance on duty. Not much good when only staying 1 night. Not much customer interaction in the breakfast room just told the buffet through there help your self. Paid £111.60 for 1 night which i think was way over priced. All in allthe whole hotel is very tiered. Most of the sash windows need replacing Probably worth no more than £80 a night.
Very helpful service at all times.
Fantastic all round
Property needs a bit of upkeep otherwise nice
Nice, cozy, friendly staff, the TV is old style flat TV but I don't think it's a big negative
Perfect overnight stay on my own to relax.. recoup and restore!.. lovely hotel and service is always consistently to a high standard!..will be looking to book again very soon!!..
Won't be rushing back any time soon
Checked in , after looking around the room the bedding was found to be dirty and stained , asked for it to be changed to be told housekeeping had finished for the day and we would have to change rooms but the new room might not be as good as the current room , eventually after a couple of hours a member of staff went and changed the bedding , during this time we had a visit to the spa which we thought was in with the room price as the hotel was advertised as a hotel with a spa only to be charged an additional £30 for use of a hot tub and sauna , after the spa we went for an evening meal , which quite honestly was disappointing a best, one part of the meal was cold and the other meal was recommended as being cooked by Indian chefs chicken Tikka masala , that did not taste like any chicken Tikka masala I had ever before , all in all a disappointing stay , i Will say the staff at the front desk and bar did the best they could and even gave us a complimentary drink for the inconvenience. It's such a shame after spending the previous three days in another Best Western hotel a few miles away with no issues but sadly no hot tub either ( the reason for the change of hotel )because this hotel has a lovely setting and views of a golf course
Friendly staff. Beautiful grounds to walk around .
Weekend in Darlington
Arrived Friday for two night stay, had a sauna/hot tub but it no longer has a pool. I was surprised to be charged £15 for the use as I've never been charged as a paying guest before in hotels previously. Room was clean but rather tired, coffee/tea/milk were not refreshed daily. Hot Breakfast to order on Saturday, but buffet style on Sunday, passable but not the bast! WiFi availabe but a right faff to get signed on. USB charge point in bedroom not working. Friendly staff, happy to help.
Think this property needs a bit of TLC, we stayed here as it was convenient for visiting friends in the area. The communal space could do with updating, the bathroom was modern but the window frames were starting to rot with pain peeling off
What happened to this hotel? Used to be good.. It's very tired now
Had a lovely 2 nights stay as a couple. Room spacious. 4 poster comfy bed. Room bit dated and needs some tlc. Simonne on reception very friendly as she was also at breakfast. Nice quality breakfast and a good price. There's lovely grounds at hotel. Drinks quite pricey at the bar. Would defo return. Had a lovely weekend break
Good value, good food, good service
Noisy until 12pm because of wedding but staff offered different room if we wanted to move. Still being upgraded but will be good when it is finished
Excellent place to stay
Lovely friendly staff clean room great food very comfortable relaxing hotel
Lovely hotel nice location
Very friendly staff
Disappointing stay due to lack of sleep.
The room wasn’t the one we booked as the lady said there were too many stairs to the 3rd floor ! So were put in the Stable room, still plenty of stairs up and down to get to the room. On entering, the room looked dated with a very worn carpet which had ripples in where it had stretched and a large red/pink stain on it. The bed had marks on the divan base. The base wasnt fitted together properly and one half didn’t have wheels on it so was at a different level to the other half. This made it very uncomfortable for trying to sleep on it. Little sleep was had ! The deadlick on the dior didn't work and the chain lock was broken too. Bathroom was ok, quite large. Breakfast was delicious but the coffee/tea cups on the table were stained and had cracks in them. Other guests asked for their cups to be changed.
Unfortunately my booking had been cancelled ???? For some reason And all the rooms were booked ?? So there was a problem (not happy) 3hours on a motorcycle and wet through ,booked and paid for ,payment taken and no room? But then the lady running reception had had some leave so suddenly a room available? So in brief would not use you again to book a room but would certainly stay at the hotel again big thanks to the lady on reception who took control and sorted out the problem 👍 staff like this deserve better recognition for their service
Lovely location, good stay
Very pleased with the hotel, situated out of town in a nice countryside location with golf course attached. Staff friendly and helpful, food was good, nothing too fancy but good standard, just what we needed. Also has 4 EV charge points so got an overnight charge without any problem.
Another nice stay at Hall Garth Hotel
Nice overnight stay at Hall Garth hotel, just minutes off the motorway but no sound of traffic !!!!!, Staff are all very friendly and an asset to the business. Evening meal was very tasty as was the breakfast. They have closed the swimming pool but have Spa facilities but at a premium price of £15 for 90 minutes which in my opinion is over priced. Rooms a little dated but comfortable . Would certainly recommend and return. They also have their own golf course.
Everything was outstanding, apart from the fact the dining option ends at 9 PM sharp. Ended up at the restaurant at 8:55 PM and wasn’t offered any food. Other than that, lovely place
Stay was great
A nice country club hotel with plenty of character
The hotel is quite dated which adds a lot of character to the property. The general areas are relatively clean but the room we were booked in has seen better days. There were some cobwebs near the windows and the floor was a bit dusty. We arrived almost midnight and quite tired so didn’t really do a complete check of the room. We did notice that one of the tv remotes were missing so I let the nightporter know. In the morning, breakfast was standard spread. All the hotel and restaurant staff we come across with at this property were really good and seemed to enjoy their work and makes for a very pleasant stay indeed.
Limited toiletries
Great hotel at an attractive price.
Stayed for just 1 night while travelling but very pleased we chose Hall Garth Hotel. We arrived later in the evening but went to the bar and the atmosphere was great with a 90s themed party for residents in the adjoining room. The bed was comfortable so we slept well and had a great full English breakfast in the morning.
The food was amazing staff were lovely and very helpful we always love to stay however this time as a treat we booked a superior room there was nothing really superiors about it, we have stayed previously and the rooms are pretty much the samejust avit more floor space, the pillows we extremely hard, everytime you turn off the tv you have to retune tune it, we went to the spa we have previously used there is now no swimming pool which was very disappointing
Would definitely return if in the area again
Very friendly, clean, food was perfectly cooked …. recommend the belly pork and mustard mash for the evening meal Breakfast …. Vast choice well presented and a perfect start to the day
Pleasant surroundings with a nice view over the golf course.
Very pleasant staff and food was lush
A reasonable stay
Room a little tired and need of some modernisation. No extractor fan or window in bathroom so not ideal as couldn't use bathroom mirror properly. Reception staff welcoming. Continental breakfast was lovely and great value. Breakfast team were very helpful. Parking was fine and EV charger was great (download app and add payment card in advance in case of poor signal).
Walked in bathroom poo stains in toilet, ripped cushions and dents in walls whole hotel needs updating
Good 👍
Great
Old granary suite was lovely, old wood beams. Very peaceful place & at an excellent price!
Excellent staff
Second time I've stayed here and the staff are unfailingly pleasant and helpful
Lovely place to break up a long journey
Lovely place for an overnight stay en route to Scotland. Beautiful village and gardens just five minutes from the motorway. Wonderful. Would definitely stay again
Mostly good
Hotel very good. Mattress too soft for our liking, and noise heard from other guests. Other than these overall very good
We have been staying at hotel least once year since been married there in 2010 this was the worst stay we had room was small no curtains and no spare pillows got woke late lastnight with people fighting.
Retirement Starts at Hall Garth
I booked Hall Garth hotel for my 55th birthday and start of my early retirement. I had a lovely room overlooking the golf course and the rabbits in the woods. The new spa is also beautiful with a freezing cold pool which I did try and hots tubs too. Angela in the spa made it extra special by giving me and a husband a free session for our celebrations. Breakfast was great too with friendly staff and lovely views from the conservatory.
Very helpful staff
She’s so good they put Mega in her name, Megan on reception is always very friendly and helpful. I hope in future all staff names are adapted as to their performance in this way. Well done!
Simone…it’s my keys I’m looking for!…
No it’s not the real Lionel Richie, but if he stayed here I’m sure he would be dancing on the ceiling with the great customer service that Simone on reception provides.. she helped find our key after a lock out incident, completely my fault, which was very traumatic, she sorted glasses and wine buckets out… overall a lovely stay made better by such kind hearted staff who work very hard to keep guests happy. And when you look at some of the guests faces that must be a challenge. 10 Lionel Richie points to you Simone!
We stayed for a family wedding. All the staff were so friendly and welcoming. Absolutely no complaints about our stay. We will definitely stay again
Super Sam!
Well what a stay in such a lovely place. Super Sam on reception is always so friendly and helpful. A little superstar. Nothing is too much trouble, in fact all the staff at the hove are pretty awesome I mean in the morning by my own admission I have a face that would crack bullet proof glass because I’m so miserable and yet they are smile say good morning and are so kind. Even I end up smiling back. Breakfast is superb too.
Dwane the locksmith
Dwane at the bar is always helpful. Especially when you get locked out your room, not once not twice but 3 times with the biggest key fob in the world I’m not sure why I managed to leave it in the room. Dwane never complained and broke in each time with a smile on his face like a first class cat burglar. Top dude.
Not Keith Flint but…
Steven who lit the fire for us was epic and should feature in the next Bear Grylls episode. Always friendly and helpful thank you .
Super Mandy!
Mandy on reception is always superb, friendly and helpful nothing is too much trouble. A superstar worth taking care of. Thank you for a lovely stay.
Stay at Hall Garth Hotel :)
Staff always friendly and helpful particularly reception and bar staff most friendly
Lovely staff and helpful folks
It was lovely all the staff are so helpful and friendly the reception staff and also the nice chap on the bar wearing glasses he got the kitchen to make a pizza just before 9 for my guest. So good I’ve booked again today! Hopefully people say nice things about the lovely staff!
Lovely solo stay
Overnight solo stay. Room tired looking but clean. Room very small. Lovely for the purpose of stay. Personal note, room was too warm for me.
Avoid, there's better in the area.
Rubbish on floor in room beside sofa presumably from previous guest, cobwebs, bedsheets although laundered were stained & dirty, sugar in one of the mugs (obviously not checked), room grubby, dust/threads/fluff all over carpets & skirting, panels falling off in bathroom, bath water luke warm, staff in restaurant uninterested, slow service, food not to standard (very salty, questionable quality as caused illness after meal). Car park very dark, muddy, pot holes. Chose to avoid included breakfast so no comment on that. Worst hotel I've experienced in years.
So much potential
Great location, potential as a hotel but rooms and food do not live up to the potential. 3 stars is about right for the price and what to expect really.
The staff were all lovely but unfortunately the room was cold, with condensation running down the window onto the windowsill. It was noisy. Lots of banging around the corridors. The whole place looked a bit tired. The shower was great. The staff were friendly but unfortunately, this is exactly the kind of place that is being driven under by a very efficient Premier Inn model. Again, don't blame the staff. Blame the owners for decades of underinvestment.
Full English breakfast with gluten free sausages was delicious. Room was very clean and comfortable Building and grounds were delightful Dining in was a disappointment- nothing to make this stand out Reason for choosing venue was the spa - but that’s out of order. There were very few guests as no major event on and those they did have, were placed next door to each other (heating/ cleaning efficiencies I suppose) but the walls are not that thick so you were kept awake by others TV watching.
Stay again great food and staff
Great stay lovely room, only down side door would not lock
The property was beautifully set, fantastically maintained, very friendly staff, with amazing facilities and great food. It was a lovely room with everything I needed for my 2 week stay. It's such a relaxing place, and I'd highly recommend a walk around the golf course, swim in the pool / spa, and use of the gym facilities.I'm definitely going to go back next tiime I'm in the UK.
stay
This is a beautiful setting. We didn't really realise until next morning when we had to leave. Everyone friendly. I think a lot of money has recently been spent on the place. Didn't have time to try the pool. Would definitely stay here again.
Nice venue but tricky to get elsewhere by cab.
The two bedroom suite was great for our needs, breakfast was excellent too but it was a struggle to get a taxi into Darlington on the Saturday evening and the fact that there was only one bar and there was a wedding on meant that we didn’t feel comfortable having a drink while we waited for our cab. No-one’s fault, but something to be aware of if you are using the hotel as a base rather than as a venue.
Hotel was lovely clean and tidy. grounds where lovely to walk around. staff posted a card through our room wishing my daughter luck in her cricket match lovely touch and great customer service.
Hotel was very clean, rooms a little dated but still nice. Food was lovely, although drinks were a little over priced. Pool area was nice and quiet and very clean. All of the staff were lovely. Over all really pleasantly surprised for the price and will definitely stay again.
This is a lovely old property. You can see things that need sorting out eg some of the window frames but it is comfortable and friendly. The staff work incredibly hard to make your stay enjoyable. Would go back there if we are ever in the area again.
One night break.
One night stop for a nice chill out. Enjoyed pool jacuzzi sauna and steam. Gym looked decent also. Room OK no smells and comfy bed. A little dated but great vfm. Breakfast was superb. Top draw. Would definitely stop again.
Fantastic hotel with great food Would recommend
Very nice area, quiet and peaceful, Easy parking. Staff were friendly, easy check in
Pleasant and convenient
Informal hotel with a relaxed atmosphere. Lovely food, good bar, quiet location, plenty of safe parking, staff very friendly. Room was quiet, warm and clean.
Avoiding in future
Awful service avoid bcoz if you have any issue they are rude - won’t ever book here again myself so you can decide if you’d like a bad experience as such for yourself.
Good value for money, helpful, friendly staff. Classic rooms small and only double beds. Noisy neighbours. You get what you pay for at this price.
Very disapointed
Turned up late due to delays in traffic and they just locked the hotel up and didnt answer any of the calls (hopefully no one needs to leave if theres a fire). 27 phone calls and i am 3 days later yet to receive a reply or call to my emails. Had to stay somewhere else. Overall very disapointed with the bahaviour of the hotel. We wont be staying there as a company again
Cheap and Cheerful
A great hotel which is dated but fine and quirky. A little issue with breakfast times being changed which was so sorted professionally by the manager
Car park is poorly surfaced so you step out of car on to mud. Hotel is more quirky budget option than a luxury stay.
OK
Hotel is fine but a but rooms are a bit tired. Looks to be undergoing some improvement in general areas but rooms could do with an upgrade. Breakfast starts at 7 which is a probably fine for leisure but a little late for business users. Bar is soul less and very expensive (£6 a pint) so far better walking to the local pub 5 mins away.
Not the best hotel
Service for breakfast took over an hour and wasn't worth the wait for. Room was tired and had a funny smell when walking in. Would choose a different hotel when on business in that area again.
We arrived to check in,wasn’t told no information just handed a key and that’s it. Rooms were full of cobwebs room stunk of damp, marks on walls.. the swimming pool area was extremely run down, wasn’t the cleanest place also, breakfast was cold.
Overnight stay at the Hall Garth Hotel for business. Convenient location. Parking easy. Reception staff pleasant. Hotel is very much in need of an update. Main areas seemed OK but the rooms are very tired. Visited the Pool area at 6pm to find that the gym closes at 5pm and the whole area seemed to be full of decorating gear etc. Pool area and changing rooms very dated and tired and in desperate need of renovation. Breakfast area was nice. Cold selection very limited. Hot food was nice but the bacon had obviously been cooked much earlier and re-heated as it was so crispy you couldn't cut it with a knife. Probably wouldn't stay again.
Average
Not the worse place I’ve stayed. But as a lot of reviews say, it needs updating. Just old and worn. The gym is dreadful. And the member of staff who thinks it’s a good idea to drag the noisy trolley across the car park at 5 am and waking all the customers. Where’s the manager saying don’t do this🤔 Would I stay there again. Nooo
It would be a lovely place to stay if money was spent on the rooms.
Not great, but not terrible
Dated decor /furniture (sofa in the room had a rip across front). Place needs a bit of a refresh, quite tatty in places. Pool water didn’t seem clean and hot tub had scum on top when not bubbling. We found it difficult to find our room - better signage would help. Room was up lots of steps, not the easiest for access. Breakfast was nice.
Hotel fab fan In bathroom noisy and on far to long
Could be better
Room was okay size, appreciate its an old place but decor was dull and unattractive. Bed was not comfortable but worst of it was the noise from the extractor or some large metal thing outside that seemed to be going seemed like all night, Pool area - couldnt find a receptionist to get a towel, jacuzzi pool was foamy and not in a water bubbles type foam so didnt venture in, had the pool to myself though and had a nice swim . Gym looked well equipped. Breakfast was very good
Lucky find.
Very pleasant stay. The receptionist was delightful. Staff in the restaurant were a little inexperienced but the food was excellent. We were very pleased to discover this hotel.
Staff friendly Sound proofing in room a little to be desired Reception didnt open to 0730 so be aware if you want to check out earlier. All in all ok for the cost.
Nice repeat overnight stay
Have used Hall Garth several times . Just off A1M yet peaceful and quiet . Nice facilities and food is good and reasonable . Most rooms are non standard so you can end up having a nice quirky room that's somewhat different. Worth a try.
Stop-over Hall Garth
Good value, good food good setting. Slept well. Would stay there again.

nice location
free parking friendly staff room was nice small and cosy breakfast was ok average not much choice the dinner at the summerdon bar area made me very ill food poisoning the prawn paal dish was not right possibly undercooked or kitchen hygiene issue complaint sent to hotel chain and council food agency do not recommend you use it at the moment or the other restaurant i was very sick next day pending under investigation currently awaiting outcome. hope this helps.
