The Generator is fantastic!! I stayed in one of the pods. If you haven't done it, you have to try it! I slept amazingly well and they are so comfy and cozy! The staff is very helpful and easy going. The breakfast is delcious and not too expensive. Save some $$ and pre-buy your breakfast at the front desk. :) Neat history...fun place...good price!!
Quick easy check, in friendly staff and nice room, only let down was shower pressure and temperature.
Great
Keep in mind this is. Hotel preferably for clients between 18-30 yrs.
Splendid Stay
Lovely quirky hotel. Comfortable and friendly staff.
I had a thin mattress. Not comfortable.
Thanks!
The building is really unique, and Generator have made use of it in a great way. I loved having the separate spaces to either work or hang out. The park is also beautiful, and it’s very well connected to the city with public transport. Everything seems quite newly refurbished and in great condition. The locker under the bed was not very clean though, which wasn’t great as that’s where the bedding was stored. I was a bit bothered by having to make my own bed up too - haven’t had this situation in a hostel before. I waited a long time to check in - the room wasn’t ready until aftet 4pm despite the 2pm check in time. Reception staff were apologetic and offered me a drinks voucher because of this. It seemed like you might need to hire another housekeeper, as other people mentioned having the same issue with a very late check in. Overall I’m happy I chose to stay here! Thanks
The kitchen staff and cafe was just right.
The worst place I’ve ever stayed. I was given a dorm with five men, although I am an aged woman. I explained that to the staff, but they did nothing. It was late at night. I had to spend hours in the auditorium they have there, and to leave the place. They didn’t refund me any cent. I paid almost 300 euros for the nightmare.
Always stay in the pods, safe and quiet, get a travel card and the tram it very close.
Twas good
i cannot speak for the “Hostel” part of the hotel as I booked a private room, but from my experience this place is very quiet and comforting, the bed is nice the view is fantastic and the bathroom was spotless. the hotel itself is a 15-20 minute walk from amsterdam city center so you definitely do not need to take a cab. In hindsight, it is a tiny bit pricey, but other than that it’s good for what it is.
The location is a little far, but the tram is a 2 minute walk which made it easier. I stayed in a pod, which I absolutely loved. However, the pods were located on the basement which is fine. But the bathrooms on the basement smelled so bad. Smelled as if something were wrong with the pipes. That was my only issue. Also, bring your own towel unless you want to rent one.
Hotel cerca de parque
Un lugar muy agradable, habitación limpia y amplia, me gustó la ubicación porque me permitió conocer los alrededores. Adicional y un extra que encontré es que está justo frente a un hermoso parque.
Pride 2024
Great location. Friendly staff. Great Rooms and Amenities. A real international cross section of guests. A very sociable place to stay.
Great service and cleanliness
It was good overall! Staff are super friendly and helpful. Unfortunately i was stuck with an arguing couple but thats not the hostels fault and something i could put up with 😂
Large but very efficiently managed hostel with CV accommodations for everyone, but especially well suited to solo travelers. The facilities are generally excellent with good dining and a 24hr desk with various snacks and rental options (bicycles, towels, locks).
I got to the hostel pretty late and was very tired from all the commuting. You think of hostel as a place to sleep so I thought the moment I get to my room I can just sleep. But no, I had to make my own bed by putting on bed sheets etc. the bed sheets had holes and stains on them. I was on the first bunk bed and I can not count the amount of time my head hit the top of the bed. It’s so short and I’m a very short girl as well. I’ve also stayed at other hostels on this trip and bunk beds but this one felt exceptionally cheap. The bathroom is separated from washroom which is totally fine but the bathroom doesn’t have a garbage can and they don’t even offer shampoo or shower gel.
Very clean, lots of amenities! Wish there were more than 2 sets of laundry/washing/drying machines for such a large facility. In the 6-bed room, it was sooo tiny, and my luggage couldn’t fit in the under-bed storage bin (bring a wired bike/luggage lock to secure your suitcase to the bunk!). Also, the third level bunk was a reeeeally long trek each time (the metal ladder kind of hurt my feet!). Otherwise, great spot; reachable to the central part of the city and elsewhere.
So fun and accommodating!
I was pleasantly surprised by how amazing this place was. It was clean and had really cute decor. The staff was kind and helpful. The breakfast was tasty and the rooms were comfy. Im so glad I chose this place.
All good, pleas add privacy curtains to the beds. I enjoyed the capsules, pods!!! 1st time, excellent!
Ja
great with the 14 tram taking you there from the station.
The property it’s clean and good staff
For what it is (a hostel), it is great! Staff were responsive, great location, especially around art week, and museums (if you have the time for it). Location is near a zoo Artis, so there are surprisingly unique birds clustered together.
GOOD HOSTEL
Good hostel, clean and efficient. All extras: towels, storage, are at additional cost. Great value for money.
I stayed in a deluxe king room , and it felt very much like a hotel. It was clean, the facilities were clean. It’s right next to a beautiful park. Not very close to the city centre, but taking the tram was fairly easy & it’s close by. The only negatives : check in was at 2pm, and my room wasn’t ready until almost 6pm. Also, if there was daily housekeeping , it was not very apparent they were there.
Amsterdam fun.
The location is in an univarsity converted to a hotel. The staff was great. The rooms are spacious with air-conditioning available. The breakfast was great. I recommend the stay.
This was great for a group booking, a really good price for 4 of us to have a room together. Everything was clean and comfortable, with a good on site cafe and a tram line about a 5 minute walk away. The hostel backs onto a big park as well which was nice in the good weather!
Food wasn't good. Overall it was a good experience. I would go back.
Very clean hostel.
Amazingly unique place
The hostel is amazing. Perfectly situated and the staff are so friendly and happy to help. We had a lovely view of the park, the floor to ceiling windows are stunning. Everything is close by or easy to get to. The breakfast is delicious and so is the coffee! The room was small but perfect for what we needed. The hostel is designed in a really unique way that accommodates everyone. It’s a really lovely place, with really lovely people, and you most definitely get yours moneys worth, and more. We will be returning
Spectacular views and friendly staff
We LOVED the Generator Amsterdam - we stayed in room 347 on the third floor and we had the most beautiful view of the park imaginable. It was truly spectacular, we watched life in the park at all times of the day and we felt as if we were in the trees with the birds - parakeets, herons, cranes and gulls. The staff were very helpful and friendly at all times, especially Yessica who looked after us during our stay. The room was spotlessly clean and the bed was very comfortable. There was hardly any noise at all on the third floor. The breakfasts were wonderful - fresh fruit and pastries, savouries, juices, tea and coffee - perfect! We will definitely be back and we want to try your sister hostels in Berlin and Madrid too.
Decent place to stay specially for travellers. Dont expect much in terms of service there is not even complementary coffee. They dont provide anything with room. You need to pau even for towel , lock & coffee. Nice clean and good stay
I booked one of the pods, but it felt like a coffin as the ventilation system barely worked and was not properly sound proofed. Next to the pod room, there is some sort of a club, so the noise is unbearable.
This was probably one of the worst experiences ive ever had at a hotel. I will not return in the foreseeable future. Next time ill be more comfortable paying more for a better hotel than try to save and stay as such a terrible establishment. I arrived 40 minutes after my reservation and room still wasnt ready, i had to go bother reception to clean the room even though thier system said it was cleaned. I waited an additional 30 minutes to have access to my room. No apology from the staff just a is what it is attitude.
Nice place and stuff, but have lack of control of beds
The rooms where generally okay not amazing the blinds didn’t close all the way and if you were on the top bunk you didn’t not have a privacy curtain for changing or light. We had multiple male stuff come into our room unaccompanied by females as well as they did not knock or acknowledge they were coming in the room. There is no lounge area to meet people or hang out it must be at the cafe and you must purchase something from it. I recommend paying for the breakfast in the morning it is very well done. The female staff were amazing I greatly appreciated them. The door in our room was linked to a glass room which was locked but was still open so we had a breeze the entire night. I recommend a different hostel closer to the central
The staffs are friendly, helpful and welcoming. The place is clean and great, awesome atmosphere! The individual pods are a great experience.
Bit annoying that you have to pay for towels to use, if I’d have know I’d have brought my own. €6 per person is asking way too much.
Good place for a great value stay lots of in house options for social, dining, drinks. Well placed to access central locations
If booking via Expedia, then your payment is just processed via your creditcard (e.g. after the payment you don't have to worry anymore), so no problem if you book via this app. However, if booking via their own website, then your payment isn't really processed and claimed by the hostel. When you want to check in, you are told to pay for the booking at the reception, and you are told that the original payment for the booking isn't actually a payment but a failsafe for no shows. When you then pay for your booking, then your the original booking payment will be cancelled and the money returns to the creditcard/account. This is a really weird and inconvenient process, because [1] you can only pay by debit card at the reception (no cash, cc), [2] if someone else paid for the booking/trip, the actual guest might not even have credit to pay for the room, and [3] the cancellation of your booking payment is done manually and therefore prone to human error. Imagine that someone else pays for your booking, e.g. your boss or parent, and then you arrive at the hostel and suddenly you have to pay there, but you didn't bring any credit because the booking and payment are supposed to be done already. Then, you will not be able to check in because you can't 'pay' for the booking, while the original booking payment is not cancelled because you didn't check in. Also, they charge you €5 for a small can of supermarket beer (€1 or less around the corner).
Wish they wouldn't charge for every little thing like €1 for a cup of hot water. Other than that, great place!
Clean, safe, well maintained property. Great staff, and a fun place to stay.
Everything was wonderful in this stay. The property was so clean and the staff was extraordinary. There was a surprising mixture of all ages. There was so many activities for everyone to do. I stayed in the pods and it was amazing. Thank you so much for a memorable stay.
Everything was very clean and understandable!
Thank you
Pretty much a very decent hostel to stay at. Would recommend it for people who are looking around for decent hostels to stay.
Great stay overall
Great stay, beds and pillows are really comfy, had very good sleeps. Bathroom is very modern and clean. Would have been good if the shower temperature could have been turned up more, it really wasn't hot enough. Also there was no way to open the window. They have a ventilation unit with a fan and temperature control, but at points it was quite hot and I wanted to turn the temperature down more but couldn't
Minimalist room and it got very crowded in the downstairs cafe etc with many many traveling students. Everyone was pretty nice and location was excellent to city center. It was adjacent to a nice park.
Likes: Good price. Center of the city. Loved the property location in a public park with a pond filled with all manner of ducks and birds. Up early to feed them. Grocery stores nearby. Good transportation close by. Dislikes: Staff gave wrong directions to location. Bed unmade on arrival. Request for lower bed (I had an injury) not honored. Charge to rent a towel. Geared to Gen Z'ers in terms of most occupants during my stay and all marketing - see how your daughter/son is using that European excursion courtesy of the bank of mom and dad. Overpriced extras. Place itself otherwise pretty ordinary.
High end party hostel
It's a party hostel, and it's a good version of that, but it's pricey for what it is, and you have to pay extra for everything (a towel is €6 for example). Location is good and 6-bed dorm was fairly quiet.
Good place in amsterdam
First time in the generator hostel Very nice clean room and bathroom I will be back again
Very good place.
Staff was very helpful. Hostel living isn't for everybody.
Stayed here for a conference. Really nice and clean room. Better than I was expecting. The park outside and local area was quiet but still had a buzz. I didn't hear any noise from the club in the basement and there wasn't any real late night corridor noise. Very impressed
Meh
Bit of a boring place to stay. Would be rubbish as a solo traveller. Towels are £6 for your stay which is way overpriced. No events really going on. Staff were okay but not overly helpful. Did the job for somewhere to sleep.
Had poor to no supoort for check-in. Not everything was communicsted since the beggining. For example i didn't know towels were not included and that i had to buy padlock to use in the lockers. And of couse, i discovered little by little doing countless travel to reception, and facing a bug line everytime.
staff
The price is too high for what you are getting.
This is not your traditional Hostel. The prices are high and on par with most hotels. They charge premium prices for for everything ( towels (6 euro), soap, chargers (10 euro); the bike rental charge of 20 euro / day is almost double what most bike shops charge. The Generator is a multinational corporation. The AMSTERDAM GENERATOR location has over one hundred rooms, and generates over 10,000$/ night in fees. That works out to over $300,000 a month. Their latest venture is "Pods" which are really spartan, and lets you experience the life of the cage people of Hong Kong. The profit margin on pods must be astronomical. The Generator advertises on Hotel.com, Expedia and other websites. It is a much better deal to find a small hotel that does not use these booking sites.
Great value. Fun property.
So nice
Amazing staff and rooms, met some nice people and the hostel is conveniently located!

Cutting corners
I find the European generator experience really “cheap” compared to the US experience. I arrived in Amsterdam to a long queue to check in, no towel provided (rent one for 6 euro), and a bed I had to make myself! Come on guys, you are charging nearly 40eur for a dorm room here.. I had issues with customer service in Madrid last year also. In Miami for reference the staff are super helpful, they actually make your bed, and provide a towel, all in an environment that is far less cramped. Amsterdam - a cheap experience that isn’t actually that cheap.
It is fine
Beautiful location, fabulous window views from the room.
Staff were super helpful and informative. Areas were clean and well looked after. At no point in time did I feel unsafe in fact, it was one of the friendliest places I have stayed. Breakfast was good. It was the perfect setting to meet like minded travellers, make friends, and of course making memories while in the city together. Would strongly recommend to anyone travelling.
Good facilities and clean place
Everything was great, it would just be nice if they didn't charge for the smallest things.
Disappointed
I couldn’t leave the USA and they would not credit or refund.
For a hostel the private room and bath was nice and clean, the staff was nice and the breakfast was good.
Avoid Generator
Terribly noisy. A basement party bar pounds out loud music until 4am. Impossible to sleep in the PODS Thursday, Friday, Saturday nights. Also, hundreds of school age kids arrive each day by bus load from the region. Huge breakfast lines. This is not a hostel but a factory.
Stayed here a week, great hostel for youth that want to meet people and party. In good location from city centre. Quick bike ride away. Wasn’t happy with all the up charges and prices of things like bathroom essentials and food in the lobby. $7 for a towel, $4 for a beer. Book on Expedia to get cheaper price & to get points. Overall had a good experience, just be ready to pay for it.
Don’t ruin your trip booking this hotel!!! We found no towels after returning. When we ask a front desk employee to provide us towels, she was rude and made us pay for towels. However, providing towels was included in our service. The price was around $500 per night, and the room size-about 60 sq ft. The description says “ deluxe king room”, but the room was actually at a hostel, service was hostel-like as well.
Amazing space! Felt that my room was very clean and the staff was extremely helpful. Loved the location as well!
Relaxed atmosphere, great selection of breakfast. No toiletries though, but everything was squeaky clean. Spotless.
Big apartment Hostel
I stayed in a 6 bunk room. The bunkbeds had outlets/lights/and a privacy curtain. The shower was separate from the toilet (in the same room) but could have been better in the aspect of actually closing the door to prevent the water from hitting the ground. The staff were friendly and ready to help with any need. Bring your own towel or rent one for €6. They have laundry machines. €4 for wash & €4 for dryer. A single tidepod will cost €2. Breakfast is quite nice, all you can eat for €9.50. I suggest going to the local market and purchasing water for daily use or for snacks. There are toliets in the basement for privacy or afterhours. They have foot lockers under the bunkbeds to store your luggage, maybe it's just me, but they're kinda loud when you roll them out at 7am while everyone is asleep. I suppose it's the hostel life? I've stayed at another hostel in Amsterdam and it didn't even compare to this one. I haven't tried looking for another one because i enjoy this one. Excellent place to meet new friends!
Stuff in small rooms tower bunk beds?? The cafe coffee shop was GREAT Roomsbfelt wat too dormish
Nice but only at a low price.
The Generator is actually a hostel for students of the local schools with a floor of hotel rooms sitting on top. The makes the stay vibrant and young but not relaxing and quiet. The checkin process is digital, slow and laborious. The food is great if you like the quality fast type. The rooms were very basic with no safe, no TV and no toiletries (except some shower gel). It’s a distance from the centre of Amsterdam but several teams stop close by. It’s also situated in a beautiful park. Consider the price for the rooms I felt this was a x3 markup for the type and style hotel.
The horror bedroom
When booking the hotel, at NO TIME was it informed that it was necessary to make additional payment for some basic items: towel, toilet paper, soap for showering, that's right, we didn't have these items that are basic, when questioning the attendant, she said that there was nothing I could do and that I should have looked on their official website and that this information SHOULD be on hotels.com as I booked there. The photos in the ad do not reflect the quality of the rooms, we stayed at the hotel for 4 days but on no day they went to clean the room, they just went in and folded the toilet paper. We were very frustrated with the hotel facilities as well as the fact that we had to pay ADDITIONALLY for towel, toilet paper and bath soap. The word that best describes the stay was terror. When questioning the possibility of cancellation, they informed me that if I canceled I would lose the entire amount paid. Anyway, I don't recommend the hotel and even an uber that caught me pointed out that I'm not the only guest to complain, I even believe that Hotels.com should ask for a minimum of quality to offer the hotels on the site. In addition, the bed was not made, that's right, a sheet and blanket was folded for me to make my bed. pitiful. As a curiosity, the following values are practiced: Toilet paper €3 Towel 5€ Soap €2
Very good location, the property is inside a park, very good to take a walk any time of the day, the building it's pretty cool, there are locker which you can rent for your luggage and they also rent bikes, for only 16 euros de entire day, the best way to explore the city, there are a mcdonalds near by as well as a mini market. The shared rooms are good, light in the bed as well as a power entry. They rent towel for 4 euros and sell other amenities.
Great place & friendly staff!
Very good I stayed several times.
Just great.
No regard for personal items.
It is clean and modern and ticks all hostel boxes but is majorly overpriced. Almost the same price as a 4 star hotel however I heard great things about Generator and thought I would try. You are instructed to bring your own towel which after the first night in my private 4 bed room with friends, It was taken. Reception blamed it on housekeeping (which never came to our room) but no action to actually compensate me for my personal property being taken nor a brand new replacement. Spoke to 3 different receptionists who all were trying to get me out of the line rather than help me. The offer was a cardboard quality overused towel given as a replacement which is not okay. Handover between receptionists is shocking. If the instruction is to bring personal items like towels and soaps then dont steal them off your guests! There wasnt much of an atmosphere that we purposefully booked for so would rather stay at a hotel closer to the centre where I wont have to worry about my personal belongings being taken.
I loved the fact that it is a hostel with 24/7 check in. Came in at 12:30 am and checked out at 10 am. Worked out perfect. Super nice roomates too. Would come back again without any hesitation
Great hostel, I stayed several time. The proximity and area I like and the bonus of the property is it’s in a park which on a summers day is exceptional.
Warm greeting by staff, clean rooms.
Charged twice.
I had stayed in this hostel on 2nd August and was charged twice for the room. First through Hotel.com and in person at reception. I reported about this issue while check-out and they said they have issued the refund. Still didn't get the refund to my bank account. I am not happy with servive and I have send you a mail. Can hotel.com look into this issue and solve this please.
A fairly modern hostel with a really mixed crowd of ages, nationalities and solo/groups. A good location just a few minutes' tram ride from Centraal Station and Damrak. Decent facilities but nothing particularly special. Limited organised events or detours. A few minor issues during the stay (faulty shower head, no ironing boards, food took 1 hour one evening) which weren't resolved. I'd come back though.
Very clean and well-maintained facility. The staff was quite helpful and welcoming as well. The only downside I’d say is it lacked common areas with only one and there was no hostel events/activities ongoing either. If you’re not looking to meet people but just want a good space to stay, I’d recommend. If you’re looking for a more communal type hostel I’d look elsewhere
Your stay would probably be better than mine; my room's AC was broken and despite the staff's assurances they they rebooted it the AC remained broken through my entire stay, and from what my roomnates said it had been broken for days before I even arrived. Made it too hot to remain in the room or get a good night's sleep. Other than that rather large problem the stay was good, it's reasonably close to the metro and the staff were there 24/7 to answer questions.
We did not like the expensive luggage lockers, extra €5 euro charge for each towel (4 of us stayed in room with private bathroom), no available boiling water for tea (would have had to pay at the restaurant there as if I was buying a tea for over €2). Staff was friendly, place was clean, but quite expensive for a hostel stay. Thanks.
Comfortable stay. Quiet for my young family. Good base to explore o
Everyone was super nice. Made my stay there so easy! I look forward to staying there again!
I liked the hostel. It was clean & served it's purpose. It is better suited for group travel as it can be a bit impersonal
Nice
