This is not worth online booking, may be for locals walk in ok and decide if it’s what you wanted but not for online. I can’t pay $50 to stay in this apartment if I knew the conditions at hand. The location is good but the facilities need 100% renovation or reconstruction. It was a terrible experience staying here, I couldn’t sleep all night that I have to engaged myself with calls and games
The property is in poor condition, which seems to have been a recurring issue based on past reviews. The housekeeping staff's training is inadequate. Our room had stained bedsheets with holes, and there was no soap or toilet paper. The rooms also stink and hadn't been properly cleaned. Because of this, we decided not to stay once we saw the condition of the room and got our stay refunded. The property doesn't reflect the photos posted online—it definitely needs some serious work.
Hi, I stayed at De Vos on the Park for three nights on my business trip alone. I didn't go walking around after dark as it was not recommended but because the MacDonalds was literally next door, it was easy to get some food after dark. The staff were also super friendly. The facilities are as expected from a 3 ish star hotel. I would definitely recommend this place if you're on a budget.
This hotel was very convenient for the city area and eating places (behind MacDonalds). A little tired looking. Needs maintenance. Staff very helpful to arrange taxis.
A clean large room, with easy access to central Suva
This was once a nice place. Now ripe for redevelopment. The photos on the internet do not reflect the condition of the hotel. It is rundown. Clean-ish. The staff were excellent. Great location in downtown Suva. I had a grand view of Suva harbour from my north facing "De Luxe" (ha-ha-ha!) studio. Which was not a studio at all but a small apartment. The area adjacent that was once a park is now being developed, so there is a noisy building site on the southern side of the property. It was a weekend, so not a worry for me. The fire escape stairwell on the west (water) side of the building is partially obstructed, and the door to the road is padlocked. Oops!
I don’t recommend other to stay in this hotel, oval is UNSAT
Rain dripping down the stairs. Not safe.
Unclean floors, unfinished hallways, lift was broken
Nothing unique... wasn't like what was posted on website. Holes in ceiling, broken toilet bowls, broken door and handles, dirty balcony, broken cupboard, stained linen, dead cockroaches inside electric kettle, stinky fridge. It was supposed to be self contained room but there wasn't anything . It was total night mare. Not a place to stay
This is no longer a "hotel" - it is a dangerous cesspit. The aircon leaked onto the bed, which the staff had moved to in front of the bathroom door to unsuccessfully hide this. The curtains were ripped, there were holes in the external walls and the door on the the balcony did not close properly. There were street vendors opposite that played extremely loud music until 4am. I left early and got refund for unused night.
Like the location which is in the city city center. The room is ok accept curtain need changing, they are torn badly but are still hanging. Lift is not working and you have to climb up to level 4 which is a little tiring after a long day in the city. Front desk staff are the best.
Hard working staff trying to maintain a dinosaur. The elevator break down literally took my breath away, but kindness of staff made up for most of it.
Got what I paid
Really good! In fact I might’ve underestimated De Vos. It’s basic but functions great. Courteous and friendly staff, spacious room with wonderful view of the park and ocean, very comfortable mattress and beddings, cold aircon and hot water.
Staff were very welcoming and very ready to help in anyway
Elevator was not working and walking up n down to level 4 was a hassle. Parking arrangements are not good either.
Super location next to the broadwalk with a breath-taking view over the bay. Good opportunities for shopping (city-center and market) and gastronomies. Close to main bus-station - trips into various directions and huge variety of destinations. Terrific nature, beautiful (sometimes little bit dirty) sea. Sweet little festival weekends. Neg point: some people screaming around in the streets all night !!
This was one of the worst properties. I can not believe that Last Minnie would advertise this on their website Last minute needs to filter all properties for their client. I will be very, very cautious before booking through last minute in future
I was disappointed as the property is old. I couldn’t even find the location as there was no name on the building
I was sad to see the state of De Vos, in the heart of the CBD. It is fast deteriorating.
Incredibly helpful staff. Great location in Suva
Incredibly helpful and friendly staff. Great location in Suva and affordable Review of De Vos on the Park Pending review I would have to give this place a very positive review as my experience has been fantastic. The front counter staff and manager are both incredibly friendly and helpful (Loreena and Ryan). They ensured that my stay in Suva was a great one as they do take pride in going above and beyond to take care of their hotel customers. I had gotten ill (which was in no way due to the hotel whatsoever) and the hotel staff have been very accommodating in providing me with market fresh fruits, smoothies, grocery foods, and dinner takeouts. I recovered quickly and it's all thanks to the staff taking good care of me. The location is very central and an ideal location to everything. It is a few minutes walk to either the central bus station, waterfront, Fiji Airways for flight booking changes, Vodafone for cell phone access, and many good restaurants like Ashiyana for Indian food. Walk ten minutes south and you're at the famous Grand Pacific Hotel and Fiji Museum. Despite some of the negative reviews from other folks, I feel that their expectations are way off as bear in mind that De Vos on the Park is truly one of the cheapest places in town. If they wanted nice European/North American hotel standards, then they should stay at the Holiday Inn or Grand Pacific Hotel for three times the price of De Vos.
This is not a hotel
Nothing I expected. This was the worst place I have ever stayed in suva, I have been traveling in Fiji yearly since 2009. The building is in disrepair, ceiling tiles missing from the hallway, the smoke detector was disengaged on the floor we were on, the elevator was in disrepair, buttons missing, the toilet was not working, sheets were soiled, the kitchen was over run with roachs. The porch door handle was missing. After changing rooms to a lower floor a bit better except the same door handle to porch was missing and the hallway carpet was wet, presumed it was from ceiling leak, the sheets on the beds were soiled, only one Aircon unit was working. The worst was new years Eve, I signed a agreement to limit etoh consumption. At midnight the hotel was a free for all party place for the locals, yelling, screaming, running up and down hallways, and two fijian males stationed on the floor, presumed to be lookouts. We did not feel safe, as we could hear them talking about us and where we were from. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. I have stayed alot of places in Fiji, including villages with outhouses, this was the worst place I have ever stayed.
A Gracious Place of Character and Charm
My wife and I spent over one month in Fiji for our wedding and honeymoon, and 20 days of our trip were spent in De Vos On The Park. There is a dynamite, gorgeous Chinese restaurant on the first floor, the location is absolutely ideal for a stay in Suva (right on the bay and steps away from Queen Elizabeth Drive), the rooms are spacious and classically stylish and comfortable and well-equipped, and everyone who works there is a consummate professional with a full measure of Fijian hospitality, including Anne-Marie De Vos herself. I would also like to address some issues raised in other, more negative, reviews. Allow me to say above all that the paramount word for De Vos On The Park is value, and while the rock-solid stalwart of the building itself has shown some signs of its rich history and heritage as a centerpiece of Suva, for those who appreciate character over chicness and style with substance over insubstantial style, you could not do better than this proud building overlooking the bay.
Great Location but disappointing rooms
No way did the room look anything like the photos on the site. The bathtub was filthy. The fridge was sitting in the middle of the room and string was used to keep the balcony door closed as the lock and handle were missing. Location and staff were great but let down by the condition of the room and hotel.
It is central to everything and has a good view. It does need some maintance done to it and the air condition fitler needs to be cleaned so it can work properly
big spacious room. close to town, with a view of the park
Has a very good cost/benefit, but cannot be compared with the more expensive hotels. It is situated in the center of town, close to the ocean. Make sure you ask for a room with ocean view. About the negative things: No breakfast is provided (but McDonalds is few meters away), and the elevator needs renovation.
Half a day with no running water, hot water not always on. Had to shower couple times without hot water and it wasn’t very nice! Elevator needs to be fixed ASAP! Staying in a hotel for 10 days with an antique TV almost no reception and only 1 channel, Jesus Christ!
Elevator problems
It took a while to pull up my booking. The elevator was not up to par. When the elevator arrived a at your floor, you had to watch your step as it was not level with the floor and when you arrived at your floor, you had to step out quickly as the sensor on the door is not working n if you're not fast enough, the elevator door would slam into you.
Stale smell, mouldy shower, toilet hard to flush, no hot water, dodgy lift
The lift was not working and we were on the 4 th floor . The bathroom was stinking and dirty . Will be sending photos . There was no door for the bathroom . Doors to the outdoor terrace did not lock. Was an awful experience .... not going back there ever . No restaurant open.
Right in the middle of the city which was close to everything. The stuffs were very friendly&helpful. Will definitely be stating here again.
Just pathetic . Will not use expedia for bookjng snh more
Good location spacious room. Very pleasant and helpful staff
I didn't like anything about this hotel, it is rundown dirty and unsecure, door would lock. Minimal staff, the so called cleaner was asleep in our room. I have traveled a lot and stayed hundreds of hotels over forty years and this is only the second time I have left and found another hotel, no refund of course. DDo yourself a favour and kee
Depressing blackened concrete on outside. Exposed rebar in concrete structure. Threadbare carpet and tired, old decor. Single, very slow lift. Door locks mixture of electronic and keyed, Mine keyed, did not latch or lock automatically - no internal unlock lever. reliant in simple small bolt to secure door - otherwise locked in with no way out. Room itself spacious, clean and tidy. Couches and bed comfy. 4am departure meant no breakfast , and no provision of alternative in evening despite promise. Did not respond to messaging of delayed arrival (despite meeting cutoff date-time). Half the price of Holiday Inn and you get what you pay for ..
So I booked a double bedroom and I really enjoyed the stay for the price. Car park enough for 2carparks or pay for parking which I had to a couple of times. But when it comes down to safety, there’s a big problem with the lift service. Missing buttons, wires hanging out and the alarm system doesn’t work coz there’s no batteries installed. Staying at level 4 calling reception and no one answering, I had to carry my suitcase and bags down the stairs as the lift wasn’t working. Only found out when I had to wait for 10mins coz there wasn’t any signs or notice. Throughout the week, it was up and down the stairs a few times as well. Rooms itself were spaces and comfortable enough for the price paid. But this hotel still hasn’t been renovated and it’s been 10years since I last stayed here. Needs to shut down and have a complete renovation especially with the safety issues. Staff were kind and helpful but you’d feel sorry for them having to operate a hotel that the owners don’t seem to care about coz after 10yrs I’m back and it’s hasn’t changed. Would have been a great hotel. As much as I wanted to put 5stars for the staff, I just couldn’t get pass having to carry bags up and down from level 4. Just an accident waiting to happen. Sorry staff
The property was pretty much run down. The staff was great but the owners need to do a whole lot renovation. The elevator was scary and the lighting wasn’t that great. Lots of individuals begging outside the hotel for money.
no restaurant, no room service, dirty outside of building, doorknob fell off, none of the desk lights worked, only phone was in toilet, toilet was falling off, if i hadn't of prepaid using wotif i would have left
Absolutely disappointed with the property and condition. Never ever recommend to any guest.
Value for money.
Great location and great staff. Old but gold. Recommended.
I found this hotel to be pretty unclean, and actually smells stale. I certainly cannot recommend it, and feel strongly enough to write this.
The television did not work properly, the local channels were fuzzy and awful. The phone was falling out of the wall.. the curtains did not work well . The staff was wonderful, friendly food and helpful.! The hotel is in a great location, it needs to be re modeled.it was private and priced well.
Great location with easy access to everything in Suva.
No house keeping for 5 days ....
Terrible sums every7thing up. Took breakfast away continously at 8am when should be 9am and ranout nif milk and took Half an our to get from Supermarket and so on . Jyst a terrible stay
Well-situated near downtown restaurants, park, and ocean. But elevator wasn't working, check-in took over 20 minutes, and only HOT water from shower.
Good location, but room was disappointing. TV broken, most lights not working, balcony door broken so it couldn't be opened, phone not working. Most importantly the lift didn't work and being on level 4 made it quite a problem. Also no breakfast was available, and the restaurant wasn't open for dinner. Won't be going back.
Restaurant closed, no lift working
This hotel is very old and they are attempting to renovate the hotel whilst still offering rooms instead of closing the hotel for renovations. Rooms were not very clean, telephones did not work, had to get the rooms sprayed for cockroaches that were even in the fridge. Restaurant and bar were closed for repair. The whole experience was very unsatisfactory.
Good but not great
Spacious rooms, comfy bed, although no air conditioning working and tv connection very poor. Bathroom was nice and big. Would recommend if you wanna stay in town for a weekend to enjoy nightlife, weekend shopping etc
Under renovation and in very poor condition. Needs urgent work on both interior and exterior. The room itself was spacious and clean
Rooms were dirty and there was loud music in the park beside the hotel it’s held at every Saturday night breakfast was not provided despite Expedia selling the package with the breakfast dust in the bathroom and the aircon fluids were leaking on the walls
Superb location near the city center. The staff was courteous and available. However, Wi-Fi did not work in the morning and I needed it.
Worst hotel in Suva.
This room was repulsive. I stepped into a room that was dirty. Urine stains on a stainless steel wall behind the toilet and a door that appeared to be kicked in. I immediately checked out and they refused to reimburse my two night stay. Every surface in that room had bodily fluid stains on it and with the door frame in that state I can't say all of it was consentual. Save your money and your organs from being harvested and skip this room regradless of the price. Thank you hotels.com for attempting to get me reimbursed, they were unsuccessful but they did give me a $53 credit.
OMG
The state of this hotel is really bad. Lifts not working. Facilities and condition in pathetic stage. No worth a dollar. Surely great location and wonderful & friendly staff. The hotel needs urgent upgrade of the its facilities and conditions. The place as is looks very sad, scary and unattractive. And it’s very noisy in the morning from singing at the Sukuna Park. I see some renovation work has started. I do look forward to return. And may be the management and Expedia need to offer me a special voucher to revisit and review the place on completion of all refurbishment work. All the best.
Disappointed with maintenance of the room. a lot of ceiling lights missing, tiles coming off wall
Old and rundown. Very bad. Not what it looks like on pictures.
Mixed Review
I was disappointed in the Hotel as I had many problems. I had to wait over an hour to check in (after their advertised check-in time), originally had Wi-Fi problems. The bar was inadequately stocked of common drinks, e.g., Coca Cola, white rum. The restaurant did not open for the four days that I was there and the lift only worked about 25% of the time resulting in walking up and down to the fourth floor by stairs on many occasions. On a positive note the location was excellent with all needs within walking distance. The staff were extremely helpful, especially Wilson, who is a great asset to the company, but sometimes limited in what they could do. Partly due to the problems I was experiencing the Manager, Liku, offered me accommodation at their sister Hotel, “De Vos The Private Residence” on the Coral Coast, at the same room rate, a good customer service option to make a customer happy.
Ok if you must stay in town.
This hotel has seen better days. It was remodeled a few times, but not in the last 20 years. It has been renamed several times and is locally know as "JJ's". Few people know the hotel as "De Vos", as there is no name on the building. The location, close to the park, harbor and town, is great.
Don't waste your money nothing works old and dated!
Central, not cheap, dirty and bedbugs
I was there for 5 days and... it was just the worst "hotel" I stayed at. I'm not even sure we can call that a hotel. The exterior look of the hotel is very dirty, so are the communal areas. Staff seems nice but seems also clueless of what is happening in the hotel. Breakfast is very very poor. Plates, bowls and cutlery were inexistant on the tables and we had to ask for them every single morning as if it was a option. The room looked huge and okb ut realised that the floor was not clean, remote control didn't work, toilet was low (as if it was kids toilet), beds are covered with hideous dirty bed plaid and on top of it there were bedbugs!! When we informed the reception about those, they just laughed at us. This is outrageous! The location is very central, too bad the service and cleanliness of the establishment is below poor
Terrible place, avoid at all costs!
Couple of decent things about this hotel - good central location, and some of the staff were friendly enough. Otherwise it was a horror show...very poor levels of cleanliness and hygiene (in rooms and central areas) - there was leftover food/other gunk on most items of crockery, that's if you were lucky enough to find some for the awful breakfast. I got stuck in the very old and clearly unserviced lift, had water dripping on my head in the night from the AC unit above the bed, eaten by bedbugs, dead cockroach in the corner of my room for days despite it being 'cleaned' daily, internet usually didn't work in my room...could go on. Unfortunately I was stuck here this time, but will never be going back.
VERY CENTRAL SUVA HOTEL
And that's what we wanted. The staff are very helpful and courteous. Hotel in process of renovation, the lift was only working sometimes! Apparently it was like that some year ago also. Obviously taking a LONG time to renovate and fix things. Fiji time! Having said that we would stay there again. Perhaps lower floor with better view.
Worst hotel - should be closed!
It is dirty, the sheets were unclean, towels were unclean, the whole building is crumbling.. this place is disgusting!! It feels like a shelter for homeless people. This was a nightmare! I checked out after one night as I couldn't handle staying there. Disgusting, awful, extremely dirty, smelly, and just old and crumbling. It should be shut down!
Avoid at ALL costs
This is a tired, run down hotel. In my room the bathroom door was broken with a large hole in it, windows were broken, bed covers stained and ripped, TV old and not in effective working order. Breakfast was laid out at some point in the morning and left for the guests and flies to compete for it, without a service person in the room at anytime. There was broken furniture in the corridors and emergency exit stairwells and security and service was laxed. All this would have been ok if the hotel was priced accordingly however they charge outrageous prices for the privilege. If this is the only hotel available for your travel, RESCHEDULE!
Not the greatest. A friend and I booked the same type of room online but got very different rooms to each other when we arrived at the hotel. My room was overloaded with unnecessary furniture. My friend had a dripping aircon, dirty sheets and no fridge. For what it provides, the rooms should be much cheaper.
great staff tired facilities
Staff are friendly and helpful but the hotel is very run down and suffers the tropical issues that go with it. Lift is dodgy, stairs have lighting and leak issues. Room had many cockroaches although overall it was clean. Many windows cracked on bottom floor giving poor appearance. Need to renew and install good facilities if they want to compete.
Go somewhere else
The room was discusting. The lift was discusting. The bed was remade with unwashed linen. The toilet was discusting. The air conditioner didn't work. For $200 fjd you would expect better than this. We left the hotel immediately and went somewhere else. I will claim this on my insurance if possible.
Great location
Old hotel in need of a good renovation. Smelt musty on arrival. Beds not great.
Awful. Avoid this one like the plague
The sewage drain was blocked and the young urchin boys were trying to unblock with a stick upon our arrival. No toilet brush, shower cubicle unclean with slime on the walls. The only thing going for this hotel is the view of the marina.
Needs some more work.
The staff were friendly and helpful but the air conditioner didnt work which was an issue on the hot days and nights. The hot water didn't work as well but that was not such an issue (seems normal in Fiji). The hotel is in a great location and there have been some renovations. the room was presentable and roomy.
Hotel
The hotel is being renovated. our room was spacious and very nice with a lovely view of the harbour. However getting to the room was through the rather shabby interior. The hotel situation is very convenient right in town. The included continental breakfast was adequate and we were allowed a late check out. The staff were extremely helpful. All in all we enjoyed are brief stay. No pool which would have been nice .
Heaps better on the inside...
We booked this hotel literally on the bus to Suva from Rakiraki. Upon arrival I was a bit unsure about whether it would be as described as the exterior is extremely dirty and run-down looking! Inside though, the lobby was modern, clean and fresh and the welcome was friendly. The booking had come through, been put in the system and we actually got an upgrade to a top floor room with windows/balconies in two external walls - Room 508. Large room with comfy double bed, a couple of couches, coffee table and heaps of space. It looked like it hadn't been occupied for a while because the fridge was turned off at at the wall and it was pretty stuffy when we entered. The only reason we used the air con was for the initial cool-down which was lucky because it struggled a bit a wasn't exactly cool air coming out. The TV was pretty old and the toilet roll holder fell off the wall with the first tug of the roll and there was a broken tile beneath it suggesting that this is a regular occurrence. The shower thermostat only had two settings: just off icy and scalding. None of these things significantly impacted our stay but together they gave the impression of a need for a bit of TLC. The included continental breakfast was a bit disappointing, consisting of tea/coffee, toast and condiments and bafflingly, a bowl of cold spaghetti? No fruit or other items. Would definately not have paid the F$23 charge for this as listed on the menu! The restaurant area was a bit gloomy but comfortable.
De Vos on the Park | Hotel in Suva | Travala.com
It wasn’t what I paid for.( Over paid for crap) It wasn’t up to expectations. The place was run down. Things was falling apart. The place smelt and was very dirty and unhygienic. Had cockroaches running around. Things didn’t work properly.( Lift to go to upper level) Very unorganised with presentation of place. This is one place I would not recommend. Surprised people would stay there??
