After booking a room with a shower over bath in error (my fault, partner visually impaired at the minute) staff were very helpfull in relocating us in a room with a walk in shower. Very pleased with the new room and breakfast next morning was excellent.
Excellent breakfast
Old
The breakfast was very nice
Hotel is in a lovely old building and seems clean and comfortable. Staff helpful. I have no complaints about hotel itself. But the shower was hard to adjust and I nearly got scalded. Also hard to get into if you are older (as I am.) It's in a tub with high sides and no decent grab handles. (Also one tiny piece of soap to be shared between wash basin and shower! Is there soap rationing?)
Good bed and breakfast. No other meals offered, but this is reflected in the reasonable price
Great place!
Such an amazing beautiful 700 year old hotel! I can not complain, the only one thing is they don’t serve evening meals etc. The staff are lovley, especially the barman Mario, very polite guy. I would definately stay here again, very clean and around 30 carpark spaces with lighting and cctv.
Nice, quaint hotel- staff are excellent. Great location
Quick break to see family
Lovely room, nice welcome thank uou
The room was great, including lots of space, a bathroom with bath and shower and his and hers wash basins. and a comfortable fourposter bed. The bar closes quite ealry (about 10pm when I was there) and there was no restaurant/food service in the evening. The breakfast was excellent. The area can be a bit noisy with traffic and a railway level crossing nearby but, to be honest, this wasn't noticeable when sleeping The TV was a bit dated and the remote control probably needs replacing.
Recent business trip
Clean room and mattress felt not very new. No dinner available so wasnt particularly clear when rushing to book a hotel for business trip Instant coffee only available and no real coffee for breakfast which was disappointing and sent a poached egg back as was over cooked but corrected swiftly
Nice quaint looking pub although quiet. Room was generous for space and free parking with a straight forward walk into the centre of Colchester
The hotel was lovely but our room was right next to the main road and it got busy first thing in the morning
Its a bit from the town. About 20 walk. The hotel has no restaurant so you have to go to town. Other than that hotel is nice
Lovely rooms & very picturesque, but no air conditioning in the rooms.
Great place to stay for a short visit
Friendly staff, quick and easy check-in, room very clean & well looked after. Thank you
Historic and quaint charm
I enjoyed my stay at the Rose And Crown, I couldn’t fault my room, it was very clean, the bed was comfortable and it had all the usual amenities you would expect. The hotel is historically old and has a quaint character about it, so don’t expect it to be spotlessly clean like the modern, characterless hotels. I would recommend the Rose And Crown to anyone
Lovely
Love this type of oldies!
Lovely staff and clean and tidy rooms
Very disappointing, far too much money for a room that is clearly not executive, tiny, shower freezing, not worth the money , no parking despite saying it’s included, stay away from this hotel
There was no evening food available. Breakfast the next morning was £15 and very poor. Staff were courteous but slow.
The staff were very helpful and friendly.
Could do with a revamp decor needs updating windows did not open window and frame was very dirty blind did not work not very good value for the money regards alan neal
Stopped over on my way back to London after a long day. I had to check in very late [1am], but it wasn't an issue at all. Very friendly staff. Room as expected.
2 night stay
Hotel was clean, staff were friendly but the only food available was breakfast which meant after a 5 hour journey my partner and i had to go and find somewhere to eat . The bar is also only open for a limited time and there's no room service so although a very nice place to stay it does seem like an expensive bed and breakfast
Excellent stay, was given upgraded room, staff were excellent, very good breakfast, would definitely return
Comfortable convenient hotel
Great hotel on the edge of town. We parked mid day with no problem and the desk is 24 hours so we left everything in the car and checked in just before midnight with no issue. They'd warned us that there was an event on that night but there was no noise or disruption that we could tell. The bed was the biggest I've seen - very comfortable. The shower was great - good pressure and temperature. The only slight negative was the really creaky floor - but that was probably worse for who ever was underneath us.
Good stay
Staff Very helpful , breakfast brilliant, hope to book again
Nothing Special
The o e and only elevator was pout of service, it contained soiled bedding lr similar. Not ver good to lug two suitcases up two fligjts of stairs. There is no restaurant at the hotel, but a buffet breakfast is availble in the morning.
The room was clean and the service was excellent. The location was walking distance from Colchester castle with many close ameraties. Extreem value for money and has parking.
The exterior of the building is just lovely, unfortunately the room wasn’t. What is the main thing you want to do in a hotel room? Sleep. That’s simply impossible in room 130. Gawd knows why hotels with perfectly good sized rooms put in the smallest sized bed possible. I sometimes wonder if they just hate their customers. But this wasn’t the main issue, we can sleep in a small double bed but not this one. Ever seen The Exorcist? Well the bed in room 130 groans and moans and goes through to your very soul. Any slightest movement and we were in the film, it needs to be dumped or exorcised. The hotel staff either can’t be bothered to test the bed or simply like their guests to suffer. Needless to say, we barely slept. The pillows were uncomfortable. The bathroom: brown water stains on the door, chipped panels and a badly frosted window facing the carpark. The frosting didn’t meet the window frame, there were clear glass areas. Would you trust that people couldn’t see your shape through the glass, as it was right by the shower? Given the state of the bed, I didn’t, so I tried to hang a cardigan at the window. It needs a blind, otherwise it’s just plain creepy. No mirror in the room so I had to stand in the wardrobe to dry my hair, only the door would not open fully because it was badly fitted. Outside our room in the car park are benches, clearly audible hacking cough (poor person!) in our room early morning, maybe move the benches away from rooms so guests don’t hear th
A fun building dating at one end around 1600 and the other 2016. The Tudor bits are wobbly and pokey as you would expect. The modern bits, modern. Helpful staff and a kitchen that poached eggs nicely for breakfast. For a budget option, this is a good stay.
Extremely disappointing stay
Extremely disappointing stay, nothing like the pictures. Asked for a better room and it was no better. Only the fact that we had already paid with little chance of a refund made us stay. Dirty carpets, broken tiles, needs a complete renewal. Breakfast was good and staff were attentive.
Comfortable, good service, onsite parking, good breakfast.
kinda far away from town center
Welcoming
Beautiful old hotel love the history. Regrettably the mattress & pillows were so uncomfortable we did not sleep at all well. The staff were friendly and the breakfast was very good.
Beautiful hotel
The hotel was amazing, such a beautiful old building, my room was very basic and the bed was far to hard, I really had very little sleep because it was too hard for me with a bad back, the room was very hot even when using the fan provided, this I think was due to the heated towel rail in the bathroom that I was unable to adjust, but otherwise a lovely hotel and staff
Noisy no dining facilities
Lovely old place. Staff was lovely.
The staff were really friendly and the hotel was clean and well maintained. The beds were comfortable and the bathroom was spacious and newly fitted. The breakfast was really good too. An easy walk into Colchester town centre made it an ideal location.
lovely rose and crown
fabulous hotel in the perfect spot to get to town by foot or on the local bus.....loved the history of the building and the comfortable beds staff were lovey and helpful would have been good to be able to get food at the hotel in the evenings
Tired and no restaurant in the evening
There’s no restaurant in the evening 😡 It’s not exactly clean. The whole place is a little tired. I would not stay there again
Not as good as i hoped
Stayed to attend my sisters funeral the following day ... had a very poor sleep as they decided to get their bins ready a 3.30am then they were faffing around again an hour later then again at 5... i was worried about the traffic but it wasnt a problem. Dust on the fittings shelves etc also made me sniffly as i have a dust allegery ... however breakfast was lovely ... eventually the refunded half my money ... but i wouldnt stay again.
Over all stay satisfactory
The room allocated was an end room with an opening door onto the street which was very noisy and the bed very uncomfortable and hard, the shower head needed attention as rusted and hard to manoeuvre which an elderly person could not do as it’s was a disabled room which made me laugh as you have to go up and down 3 lots of stairs to get to this room stuck as far back as I can be from the reception , staff on entering very cold and blunt but the DIY guy very pleasant and helpful , breakfast ok but not worth £11 and the girl serving needs to cheer up around guests as miserable as sin, loverly place overall hunted or not.
Poor
Stayed at this hotel many times as it is easy within easy access to all local shops etc, however apart from the friendly staff and a quality breakfast there are no other positives to report!
Quite a nice stay. Room spacious and clean and looks modern. There was a wedding on down stairs which was very noisy but we were warned and given the option to cancel. Will stay again.
Decent for an old building!
Well I love the aesthetic of the hotel! Really cool! Everything was pretty good. Comfy bed. Could only hear the train outside from our room but it wasn’t often. The nit picky things were how loud the switch (light or plug) noise was from our neighbouring room. The other thing was that even though the shower was amazing, the water even with glass protector and huge puddles on the floor. Luckily we used the bath Mat to soak the water up and then put it on the bathroom dryer. The toilet was so close to the wall i didn’t have space or felt awkwardly positioned on it. The mirror light didn’t work either. Other than that everything good!! The coffee machine was clean and worked fine. Bedding was clean. The staff were friendly and kind. The breakfast staff; waitress’ were very friendly and helpful too.
Lovely stay
A very comfortable stay for a quick visit to family. Staff all very friendly and standard of service very good.
A lovely comfortable stay
Great value for money
Lovely hotel. Warm welcome and nicely appointed room. Heating good, unlike some hotels. I ended up in a disabled room which was fine and would have been easy to use for someone disabled. Breakfast was excellent and great value for money. Only downside was my room was close to the road (for disabled access) so was quite noisy before 11.30pm and after 6am. Would stay again though.
Lovely quirky hotel
Friendly staff and clean rooms. Our room was a it noisy but reception provided ear plugs on request- handy door out on to the street. Noting too much and was convenient to be able to order food in with the choice of eating in the bar or in your room with plates etc provided. Breakfast was delicious. Really nice stay for a family mini break! Thank you!
Restaurant Closed
This hotel does not open its restaurant so you cannot get an evening meal there - although the Hotels.com listing states restaurant. So you do not know until you arrive. According to the GM it is not worth them having a chef in for the evenings. Otherwise OK - the breakfast was good.
Disappointing Visit
Car parking was a joke. Asked at reception what alternatives were available but nothing sensible was offered. No help no other option given apparently it was because we booked late for the room!! No mention of booking the car park space
Food unavailable even though it says there’s a restaurant. On check out day I had my car vandalised. I reported this to the receptionist and asked them to check the ctv cameras. Due to data protection they wouldn’t check at that point but would get back to me . I’ve contacted them on a few occasions and told the managers not in . (will call me back ).. I’ve still had no response to the calls
Perfect location and Lovely Hotel
Highly recommended! Walking distance to the town centre. Very accessible to shops, restaurants, & transportation. Staff were helpful and friendly. Hotel is clean and spacious. Definitely will book again if visiting colchester again. Good value for money. Thank you to all the staff. We had a great time.
Lovely hotel, room fantastic, service excellent. First night great, 2nd night very noisy as a wedding being held downstairs & in garden, unable to park in carpark all day 2nd day/night due to this Was notified by email of possible disturbance too late to change booking. Would stay again but would phone before booking to check for any functions being held.
Beautiful historical building, great character, well worth a stay. Breakfast was excellent offering hot food and continental. Would I stay again? Most definitely, it fact tried to book for a business trip the following week but was unable to find it in the hotels.com website.
Perfect
Only Dow side was the restaurant was closed in the evening, other than that really enjoyed the stay. Loved the oldness of it all, difficult to imagine how the place was and the different people that stayed there over the centuries .
An outstanding period building with character 2nd to none really, if only you could know the stories the walls could tell you, but unfortunately waiting around for service (on several occasions) is frustrating. For the ladies the fixed head rainfall showers aren't always appreciated, nice to have the riser rail adjustable type. It would have been nice to have access to the period basement to see the old jail/ layout etc.
Lovely venue
N/A
Rose and Crown is an old pub but the rooms are clean and have everything you need and the breakfast is freshly cooked and very nice.
The bedroom and hotel was clean, welcoming and had a good feel to it, parking was easy on site and a convenient location for our visit, however the service at breakfast was appalling. Tables were not cleared, we were not welcomed to a table, no glasses available for some time, short staffed and we had to wait a long time to be served at our table, which then resulted in another long wait for food to be brought out, which was over cooked and dry. Disappointing as the hotel is beautiful with a unique charm to it.
The property was clean, the staff friendly, the room was very spacious, there was a wedding going on whilst we were there but as we weren't going to be in the hotel during the day and evening it did not effect us, we were warned in advantaged that an event was on when we booked. Unfortunately we had some very inconsiderate neighbours that were very noisy from 2.30am until 6.30am, which meant we had a disturbed night. Overall the hotel suited us as we wanted parking and a hotel that was in walking distance of the hotel. The breakfast was very nice too.
Very noisy air conditioning unit outside our bedroom window. Bathroom blind didn’t work properly and was full of dust. Damp musty smell in room but this could have been the age of the building. Bed very uncomfortable. Breakfast was very nice and served freshly done.
Mini Staycation
We, as three brothers, have frequent visits to Colchester for our staycation whilst visiting our brother who lives there. We have stayed in the Dragonfly Hotel for several times this year. On the whole we are very happy with our stay and we have already booked to return on 28/29/30 October.
Book a hostel instead. The room was dirty and stained all over. Paint was peeling off the bathroom wall and water was pooled on the floor below the toilet. I was eaten alive by what i can only assume to be bed bugs. It was the most unpleasant stay i have ever had. I hardly slept and couldnt wait to leave.
Its was a very pleasant stay at a lovely place with nice soft furnishings and surprisingly was quite a quiet and calm place. It was very good for a nice relaxing rest.
Fine for the price
The hotel is fine, you get what you pay for ultimately. It is a good base to explore Colchester and the local area at an affordable price. Hotels.com states it has a restaurant and serves evening meals. It doesn’t and hasn’t since Dec 22. However you are welcome to eat a takeaway in the bar and they can provide plates and cutlery. Breakfast service is slow and the continental doesn’t look hugely inviting/appetising and choice is rather limited but the full English and eggs Benedict were lovely. Don’t have the coffee though, yuk! The hotel its self is fine, it could do with a proper deep clean but the general level of cleanliness was good, there just is a run down and aged (not in the historical sense) that could just be so much better if it was given a deep clean and a little more attention and care given. We stayed in a superior family room, it was a good size and clean. The beds weren’t hugely comfortable, lots of plug sockets and storage etc. the shower was lovely and bathroom towels and sheets lovely and clean.
Great location with delicious breakfast served!
Our room overlooked a funeral parlour and was very close to a railway line so could hear trains until late into night. At the time of our stay there were no evening meals being served. Room was adiquate and clean but net curtains did not meet the bottom of the window so privacy compromised. Close to city centre and nice walks through castle gardens.
A very different place to where we usually stay but really liked it. All staff very helpful, breakfast was great.
Such a quirky old place. Couldn't fault anything.
Not easy to find on the road, drove past twice before I spotted it but lovely quirky old building. Check in lady was super helpful and friendly considering it was 10.30pm Christmas Day! Would definitely stay again
Really enjoyed our stay. Room was warm and comfortable with everything we needed.
We stayed here for one night. The hotel has a lot of character to it and the staff were welcoming and friendly. We opted for a superior room, but it was simple and the double bed was not very wide. My main problem was with the shower, which ran cold and made a lot of noise. We would still consider staying here again in the future.
Excellent choice of hotel. In prime location. Staff were really good as well.
Absolutely awful
Great!
Booked an Executive Room, no way the offered room an Executive room ... tiny room ... broken shower ... boiling water was only coming. Had to call few a times before got fixed. Don't really know, why such a room was offered to knowing the issue was there. No fridge, not muh storage either or jacket hangers.
Lovely hotel, need more bfast info
Lovely rustic hotel with welcoming staff. Room was pretty big, bathroom lovely and clean, heating that we could control easily. However water pressure at the sink wasn’t great, cold water was fine but if you wanted warm/hot water the tap spat and splashed you. Also there was no information about breakfast in the room, we had to look online to see what time it was, but no menu online. Would have been nice to have a copy of the menu in the room to look at in advance.
Parking is easy. Good location, walking distance to the Colchester Castle and town centre. Breakfast is good with plenty of choices.
Needs TLC
I booked this as looked like it had character, which it did but was so in need of updating. There was a damp smell along the corridor. Bed was comfortable. Over priced for what we used it for, just a room as restaurant had no atmosphere so went into town for dinner.
Good hotel
A nice hotel and bar. I had a ground floor room in the annex building. There was evidence of flaking paint and damp on one wall. Other than that the room was fine for a short stay. The cooked breakfast was very nice as were staff. The recepionist is not welcoming, doesn't smile and was generally disinterested during checkin and check out.
Over priced for what you get
The hotel had a lot of character downstairs but rooms didn’t reflect that The beds were comfortable & good that my teenage son had a proper bed rather than a pull out one or sofa bed. Decor was tired and unimaginative. Shower was powerful but my husband found it difficult to stand u see the shower head as it was low. There was a intermittent noise throughout the night, a generator or boiler?? Breakfast- only scrambled eggs (not poached or fried) that were over cooked, beans were over cooked but plenty of fresh bread. The orange juice tasted strange & was an unusual colour. In hindsight we could’ve stayed in a cheaper hotel with better standard of room closer to our wedding venue but picked this due to the character of it.
Highly recommended
Highly recommended. Cozy hotel with romantic rooms
nice stay
good location, staff excellent short walk into town
Highly recommended
Nice cozy hotel, big rooms with nice bathroom, free parking. Though they should give clear parking instructions
The hotel was lovely and the staff friendly but sadly the bed and pillows were lumpy, uncomfortable and old the bedding was ripped and the duvet coving apart. The room was ‘tired’ but bathroom was nice
On arrival after 5hour drive, we wanted a drink to relax, Hotel bar didn't open till 5pm and closed at 10.30pm, During the night all you hard was the traffic. On getting up we had no hot water to be able to get ready for the family wedding, we were attending at the venue.
Great Hotel
Great hotel. Good location. Ample parking. Excellent bar & staff.
Fine for an overnight stay
Comfortable bed, good shower except the rusting soap holder. Overall clean apart from the leftover open soap bottle inside the shower. Parking was on site but was full until 11.30pm due to a wedding. Only there for an overnight stay which was fine. The bar was open only until 10.30pm. Staff were friendly and helpful.
Good stay
Good hotel in centre Colchester, requested quite room on high floor which was brilliant,
Very friendly staff, very pleasant unique place to stay, lovely atmosphere
Stayed for 3 days for a friends wedding. Lovely venue
Food very good
Breakfast very good. Evening meals top class. All Staff were helpful and friendly making this an enjoyable stay.
Breakfast was average at best. Limited selection. Yoghurts etc out in the sun and not in a fridge area. Cooked food was not very appetising and not fresh. No real ale in bar evenings.
Cummftable bed
Definitely wouldn't recommend
Initially was given a room in the original part of the hotel which was a very nice old tudor style building and room. Unfortunately I got in and found I had no running water. There was no maintenence person on site so had to move rooms to the annex. This room turned out to be a twin instead of the double I'd booked, so I had to move rooms again. This final room was part of the newer section too, but had paint peeling off the walls in both the bathroom and bedroom, had poor quality windows so the road noise was loud and the bathroom heating wouldn't turn off so it was like a sauna. Overall not a good hotel, but reception did help without fuss.
