The rooms were comfortable. The bed was comfortable, towels and bedding were nice. The food in the grill and bar was excellent.

Nice place and great staff

Dirty, outdated and uncomfortable. The guest is at the service of the hotel.

Not like: property is isolated and not easy to get to any local markets, staff are super unfriendly and untrained, property is old and dated, furniture in the room is old and dated, pool is unheated and cold, lounge has repetitive, unappetizing options, and NO ONE CARES!

No information given to us upon check in not even how to use the elevator with the key. Nothing about dining was mentioned. The buffet was expensive with few options (omelette lady was awesome) room service reluctant to give coffee

Almost there to five star

Barcelo San Jose is a beautiful hotel we stayed for a total of eight days. Walking around the hotel is an amazing sight to see even with the steep hills down to the tennis court (one was locked). They changed our room to the front of the building right above the main entrance and near the highway which we thought was weired because they had plenty of empty room when we arrived. The hotel isnt near anything so you'll nees to get a car or driver. The staff while professional needs a lot of help, when asking for simple things, even going the extra mile to translate using my phone they seemed to act as if they'd never seen certain type of people in there hotel. Maybe because I was American but i noticed they would at least try with other people. They offered a service and whenI went to enquire I was swarmed by five employees. Each confused as to why I was there as if I walked off the street. When ordering food it would either take two hours for room service and it would be wrong. We went to the breakfast downstairs and couldn't get just a simple request on how we wanted our eggs made but watched as other people who spoke English get what they wanted and lunch by the pool the food was pretty decent but I would not get the burger. Then while taking a shower the tube burst sprayingnwater everywhere. Thankfully they arrived quickly to fix it.

This was the absolute worst property I’ve ever stayed at. The food was poor outside of breakfast. The staff wasn’t helpful, the pool was dirty the restaurant staff didn’t change gloves or anything. The area was run down and the staff couldn’t even help us with getting any activities even though they had a tour and activity desk. Will not recommend this to anyone. We had to go out and rent a vehicle to go out and find things to do. Absolute waste of money on that Hotel. We not go back

I loved this hotel. The buffet was amazing. The others hotels we visited during our trip paled in comparison

El servicio muy bueno todo muy limpio, las condiciones del hotel están bien pero en mi baño cada ves que uno tomaba una ducha salía agua por todas partes, el desayuno no era bueno había mucho pero nada era bueno mucha de la comida no era fresca.

Stately

Stately hotel with some age. Service is great especially for vip suites. Mattresses are old but clean. Always a good stay.

Hotel was fine, the only restaurant that was open was the bar, the food was subpar. The hotel was overpriced for what it was. Bathroom was very outdated.

Check in process is very slow. Be prepared to wait and for it to take 20 minutes plus.

The check in process upon arrival is very slow. I recommend looking into reducing the amount of time it takes to check in. It almost makes me not want to return.

If you key point is tbe cleanest, this is not bad but not excellent.if have allergy also is not, have a carpet floor. Mi desk was dirt. The people to friendly but have old process for all.

I booked this hotel because it advertised airport transfer. Going there we waited for an hour at the airport along with other guests and getting back to the airport we could not find room on a shuttle and had to uber. We were told that the return trip to the airport had to be booked from the hotel and when we tried to book it, there was no space. We missed using the pool due to one employee telling us it was open later than it was. (Apparently he did not know the hours had changed). We were told breakfast was included for an extra $10 US per person and we were charged over $20 US pp. However, we had a relaxing stay here at the beginning and end of our travels. The hotel is comfortable and staff were friendly, if not well trained.

Perfect for first night in Costa Rica

Stayed for our first night on arriving in Costa Rica. Transport from airport to the hotel was provided and excellent. Room was very comfortable with good air conditioning. Breakfast was excellent. Amazing pool area. We have booked to stay the last night of our holidays and will definitely be taking a dip in the pool.

Need and nice hotel with good vibes. Standard room are well furnished and spacious. Close to highway has uses as well as minuses (noise). Nice fitness area. We had to catch early morning flight. Free shuttle was nice. Packed breakfast was made available. Limited dining options outside of the hotel.

Always enjoy my stay here, i stay at this property when i arrive late into san jose, love that they have a shuttle that runs late, property is beautiful, friendly staff

Very friendly, and affordable, great staff but the only problem was the outside noise.

Very nice and relaxing place to stay during our time in San Jose. Tennis courts were well above expectation and having the squash facility was a nice extra. The pool area and grounds were very nice. Overall we really enjoyed our stay!

The most comfortable hotel bed I’ve ever stayed in. Great pool and onsite food options. This hotel had a resort feel which was perfect for our 4 night stay in San Jose. We were able to arrange tours directly from the hotel.

Premium bedding. Quiet environment. The staff is above and beyond friendly and helpful.

No info was given on how to get the “free” airport shuttle and that it had to be ordered 48 hours ahead. When I called the hotel from the airport, I was told it was not available for over 3 hours so i had to take a taxi at considerable expense (over 40$). The website and expedia did not give any of this info. When i chatted online with Expedia, none of this was said.

This hotel is beautiful. It was very comfortable and the service was great.

The security staff are extremely rude, and the rest of the staff are very busy. If you are in a group, or if they think you have money, you get treated differently.

It was nice at times the staff was rude.

2 of the 3 restaurants were closed and the one we did eat at was fine, but not great.

Overall the hotel was good! Cleanliness was excellent! Needed a microwave in room! Pool area was excellent! The overall comfort was very good. TV did not work right.

I would choose this hotel for my next visit

I stayed in the suite and it was incredibly beautiful and comfortable. Everyone in the hotel was attentive. The grounds are very beautiful.

Beautiful grounds. The food was the biggest disappointment. The expensive steak dinners were Ok, breakfast was trash, late night food was meh. Saturday night was really lively though.

Pleasant surprise, as I was not familiar with this brand. Staff were friendly and the facility was beautiful.

Room bed needs care it was a little worn out, other than that the view and size is great, loved the staff is very friendly and makes your stay familiar. All the restaurants are great and food is great!

Great hôtel but room are old, need rénovation: Old carpet and looking. Small bed : double size. Pool was also realy cold so nobody was in.

While the hotel offers a shuttle service I would never recommend it as it totally let us down and ruined our last night in San Jose. The manager was going to look into it and call us back in the morning, well, we are back home and nobody called. Then we left our luggage and a cooling bag and kindly asked to put it away safely but the bellboy put the icebag over the travel bag so that when we got back to change to travel the ice had melted and leaked all over the travel clothes….no apology again and apparently no dryer available….for a 2-3 star hotel it would be acceptable but not for what they proudly have a 5* plaque.

Front desk and house keeping need improve

Great place to stay, well maintained, all staff are helpful and friendly! Breakfast buffet is the best with variations of food, centrally located! Have stayed here twice a year 👍

The owner was very friendly and welcoming. The location is great for walking to some of the best museums and sights. A few great restaurants nearby.

Great place not too far from the airport

Lovely hotel with lovely people. The only downside was difficulties in booking the shuttle from the airport. We really enjoyed our stay at the Barcelo and proved to be an ideal place location wise to start our holiday. Thank you

Staff was very rude

First time staying International and I couldn’t have asked for it to go better. The staff at this hotel were so helpful. The pool was amazing and the room upgrade was a nice perk. It was fun trying new foods also.

The Barcelo is always beautiful and reliably great! The staff is friendly and efficient. I only stay a night or two but do so often. It is a great place to stop after flying in and before shuttling out to someplace further afield.

Beautiful room and comfy bed!

Great room. Comfy and clean. The service was friendly but understaffed. The pool closed at 5 which was more than disappointing for our kids who had been traveling since 330 am and the bar food was not good at all. Breakfast was good though.

The hotel is impeccably clean and the staff is as professional as can be. Everyone very friendly. Breakfasts delightful. We bought ours as part of the package. A very hard working staff cocktails very reasonable. I did mention to several that another restaurant in the complex with a different menu would be nice. Gift shop is outrageous priced. Miyako restaurant was excellent. Uber is necessary to get around

Fabulous choice!

We arrived very early and were given a wonderful room well before check in time. Enjoyed the pool area and great food. Left very early next morning. Check out was a breeze and we were very comfortable in the beautiful living room area next to reception while waiting for our shuttle.

Wish there was more clarity on the breakfast and buffet I spent $50 on a buffet I had 1 peace of chicken and rice due it being not good to me or my partner. The place and pool and bar and room was excellent just the food was not good.

I stay here when I'm in San José. Staff is friendly and hotel is very clean. Pool is nice.

Limited restaurants around, Old hotel, buffet poor, internet unstable. Friendly staff except for one lady on Premium Room on 6th floor.

Room was clean and quiet. 3 restaurants and a bar, and food was tasty but a little pricey. Not much in walking distance. Recommend Uber for getting around. Shuttle to airport was great.

Poor staffing levels long waits

It was a 45 minute wait to check in and even at 4pm our room was not ready had to go wait at restaurant and when we came back waited another 20 minutes for keys only one desk clerk working and he checked our party of 10 into 3 king rooms even though we booked doubles, had to come down and wait again….just overall poor staffing levels

The grounds and public areas are beautiful; the rooms were average for this level of hotel. The staff seemed baffled by figuring out how to get us from a 1 night independent stay to a tour stay. The food (buffet) at the hotel was average at best; inexcusable that it was so hard to get a cup of coffee at breakfast (1 working machine?).

Service lacks.

There were no bath towels, and only one hand towel. There was soap dish, but no soap bar - in both bathrooms. I had to call housekeeping twice before someone brought towels but no soap. The staff could not understand “soap”. Service not to the standard of Barcelo.

Hotel was completely full. Received a suite as an upgrade. How could you complain about that. Staff attentive and friendly.
