The front desk staff seemed extra attentive this visit.
Cheap and affordable. location a bit dodgy at night
Good news : Everything from here is a downhill walk. Everything was clean, modern, and in good repair. My first floor single on the all female floor was very cozy. Window opened. Desk top fan provided. No air conditioning. The first day my room was VERY hot when I returned because the summer sun was beating into my room. The weak link of the room were the curtains which did not completely block out the city lights. The only electrical outlet was behind the refrigerator. I wish the door into the community shower room door was secured with a keyfob like the front door was. The shower room had three large stalls and three sinks which were clean and modern.
The property is great, with great staff too. Very clean place to stay. Roms are bright enough too for folks like me.
YMCA HOSTEL
Everything ok!
Good value for money. Just 15min walk downhill to downtown
Location is near many restaurants and bars. Bus stop is just outside the door. Staff are very friendly. The only downside is that the bed is somewhat comfortable
shabby. way overpriced
Check in staff could have been more helpful.
Parking is only available from 5 pm until 7 am. When I arrived at 3, I was unable to check in because they were unable to offer me parking. When I came back at 5, I was told I could only park if I moved my car by 7, creating an unexpected early morning for me. There is no A/C in the rooms. It was 95 that day and I was given a northwestern room on the fourth floor that no one had bothered to close the blinds on. They also prevent the windows from opening fully. It was so insufferably hot that I lay on the bed in my underwear with the door propped open - so much for a private room. I didn't fall asleep until 3 because of the heat. The staff were also rude when I checked in. The bedding and showers were clean. Without a car and with a room on the other side of the building and/or not at the height of summer, I'm sure staying here would be fine.
cheap and cheerful
Great place
Clean and safe.
It was a safe clean hostel right near the K Road.
It a nice affordable stay. No outside visitors. Communal restrooms. Very nice staff and guest.
The location is great for pretty much everything.
Smelly room, tiny kitchens
Staff keep the place as clean as possible.
Clean, quiet and cheap if all you want is a place to sleep for one person. My single room was spartan and the single bed was too short for an adult male, but the faculties were clean. So
Helpful staff, an easy stay.
Fine
Small single room. Shared facilities. Bit like a small student hall room. Not particularly clean. Same for kitchen. Bathrooms clean though. Fine for a one night stopover on a budget but nothing more.
Great single room experience
I stayed in a single room on the first floor. The room was great (clean, comfortable). It had a twin bed, a desk, a closet, a fan, a heater, and a mini fridge! The bathrooms were clean too. It was a great stay!
Excellent price and location. Clean and comfortable
I liked how inexpensive the stay was and how clean they kept everything, my only complain which I understand is out of control from the managment is that it was further away from shopping malls and stores plus free coffee along with the stay would've been very helpful.
Auckland accomodation niche
This was a return visit while in Auckland. As a dite for accomodations, this establishment is top notch. Customer service is upmost from every drpartment. Very convenient to many aspects for a great stay in this part of New Zealand.
Staff was great, apart from being so close to the fire station which can be heard at night, it was great. Some of the toilet and bathroom facilities could use some maintenance and repair. Overall really good stay.
Perfectly adequate
I don’t have any likes for the property, the bed was a little uncomfortable, the people were loud-ish, the place was confusing, the room was really small. The price was definitely worth the room and amount of nights.
Clean. Helpful staff, friendly staff. Phoned me when I left driver license behind. quite affordable
Definitely value for money - we got a private room that was very small but clean. Good for tight budgets and travellers passing thru.
custom feeling
It was a short stay but relaxing. The room faced to Pitt St on fifth floor was very hot in this season especially in afternoon ;-(
Great place/nice-quiet location and safe
Incredibly friendly/knowledgeable/professional and able to answer all questions..
Was nice and close to the CBD. Also had everything in h
Good value for money. Very good for solo travelers. Also TT & pool table was very useful.
The hostel is close to J-Road which has a lot of food, Cafe's and night life. The location itself is fairly quiet, besides the nearby construction (was warned properly). The patio area had tables, hammocs and was a pleasant place.
Everything was perfect, the room was very clean and the staff was really friendly.
Room was very small but clean..bathrooms are clean. Good communal areas..it was quiet and sociable and well run
A cup or glass in the room would have been great -
The staff are helpful and considerate, the rooms are always clean, and the other facilities are well maintained.
Kitchen is available to se just pick your time to cook. Great water pressure on most levels. 24/7 reception and very helpful.
This hostel has a great vibe for guests of all ages.
Everything was clean and the prices were decent. The only thing I found quite annoying (though it is out of their control) is that the toilet is in different floors between males and females. It would have been better if all the toilets were in the same level, or if there are toilets on all floors. Overall though, I would highly recommend this place.
Very basic, disappointing as paid a fair bit as there was a concert on the same time as we stayed
Great value for money. Clean and comfortable and well organised, great location. I will stay there again!
A good night's sleep in a clean room. A bit inconvenient with men's bathroom one floor down.
Great facilities for a budget price. Kitchen is clean and looked after. Shared amenities were available after 6am to 10pm and it works. Enjoyed my stay
A New Experience .
Very welcoming, very helpful & lovely atmosphere. Will stay there again.
It's a hostel what do you expect?
Good enough.. what can you expect from a hostel? Wasnt exactly cheap for what you get, you even have to pay extra daily to use the wifi! Wifi should come free guys .. even Macdonalds has free wifi lol
Very clean rooms, good location, friendly staff and free soap and shampoo!
Great stay
Nice staff, clean facilities... simple lay out. Plenty of showers and the rooms were simple clean and functional
Great price clean tidy and staff are helpful and happy
Incredibly friendly and helpful staff went above and beyond to make sure I was comfortable
I enjoyed my stay, but I wish there was free wifi because I often rely on having wifi to make sure I can check in to my destination and have everything before I leave for the day. I was also in a room with other young women, but there was one old man in our room, which made it pretty uncomfortable.
Is good for this hostel
Book Room but didn’t get Room
I booked a single room and I recieved the booking confirmation. On arrival, I was told that the previous guest did not check out and I had to stay in a 4-men bunk. While it was an experience but this doesn’t bode right for a hostel
One week end of summer holiday stay
Stayed in single room, which was small, as expected. No air con or fan but climate bearable in late summer with window open, and no flies or mosquitoes! No noise insulation and corridor light filters under door, so bad luck if you're a light sleeper like me, hence my lower rating for comfort! Showers and toilets were kept clean.
Good Value.
Nice very nice nice very nice nice very nice nice very nice
Nice beds, good surrounding area :)
Bed are super comfy for a hostel, showers and toilets were clean. Stayed 1 week and it was long enough. Ponsonby Road is worth a visit for shopping, bars and restaurants and Egg and Spoon is nice for brekkie! CBD just a walk away.
깨끗함, 시티가려면 10분 걸어가야함, 에어컨 없어서 너무 더움, 여름엔 비추
really comfortable and great staff at reception who is always ready to sort out the things for you at any time of the day . great facilities. thanks guys for making my trip great .
Fine for the price
Fine stay in general, small rooms with bad indoor clima so you need to have the window open. So stay at YMCA is most ideel for spring/summer/fall days. Location os fine, and freindly staff
The cleaning staff and counter staff are nice, but it could be noisy in the midnight.
The hostel is just right in front of the bay. The kitchen on huge. You can cook, bake etc. They have a big resting area. Staff is friendly. The room is clean and comfortable. 100% recommended
I felt like I was back in an American dorm! The location is pretty good, the staff was AMAZING, and the single room that I stayed in had everything I needed. It is essentially an a la carte place - you need to pay for WiFi per day as well as breakfast if you want it, but towels and linens are included in at least the single rooms. I would come back.
Stayed in 6 bed dome and was little crowded.
Well located in central Auckland, true to other reviews this hostel is noisy and the walls and windows are paper thin. Do not go if you are a light sleeper. The window in my room was broken, but the room was warm and bed comfortable. You have to pay for WiFi.
all in all its okay for overnight stay. i made a mistake, all the while i thought it has a private bathroom
Pay for wifi, pay for parking, busy area so can be noisy. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Nice, clean facility with plenty to do
Too noisy.😒
A very noisy place with loud guests talking, yelling, and slamming room doors late at night and very early in the morning. All the noises from stairwells and hallway can be heard in your room. The whole place was extremely clean and well maintained. Very good facilities and it felt safe there. Very central. If you can handle inconsiderate guests, traffic noise, and constant door slamming you will be fine here.
Clean and tidy, the staff are friendly & helpful!
Good location, but really noise! I was awake three times during the night after I went to bed.
Great value
While then accommodation was great the other noisy guests not so great. Had the misfortune to be staying at the same time as a large group of school children who were definitely not the quietest of guests.
Comfy bed, spacious room. There is also a mini fridge.
Happy resident
Good all round location, handy to CBD, my car parking area. Good hot water & pressure in showers. Housekeeping through out the site was daily & kept clean etc. May go back there again soon.
The local is really great. 10 minutes to queen street. But the cleanliness of bathroom needed to be improved.
Toilet
The toilet was overflowing for 5 days. I would have thought that after day 1 it would have been sorted. I had to go to the toilet on another level.
City stay
The bed was very comfortable. And location perfect for exploring the city Downsides - room noisy from lounge downstairs, kitchen minuscule and men’s toilets kept leaking although they were evidently brand new
City Central convenience
Straight forward , hassle free check - in. Staffs were helpful . Location was good - close to my bus drop off point. I like that this hostel is close to everything and the place is generally well maintained. Unfortunate , is that it is so close to busy road intersections , as it is pretty noisy.
I stayed in room 305 for three nights, due to the iron bed making lot of noise when you slept, looks like a hell !!!
What I expected, basic and clean.
Fine budget accommodation. WYSIWYG.
Just a night in the city
Very basic room , but I guess you get what you pay for. Parking was a mission & had to park a mile away, but this is common with some Auckland properties.
Great value for money!!!
Very clean,Friendly service, Comfortable warm room. Will stay again.
Bad Hostel
The toilet was flooding everyday and nothing was done about it, the toilets and showers were not regularly clean. The surrounding area was not very welcoming. Overall, a poor stay
Only if you can bear the noise...
The building is beside the Central fire station and ambulance service, so you will regularly hear siren sounds. We were in a low floor room facing the courtyard. On all 3 nights, there were people chatting till late, one night with music playing in the background amidst loud chatting. Facilities are clean and basic, but seemed to us, not caught up with the needs of the modern day traveller eg. need to pay for wifi. If you add up the charges for wifi and other services, we're not sure if the rate we pay was good value.
My only criticism is that the lounge area often/usually had on-going loud music with ++ bass playing ( ie afternoons and evening ), making it unusable for reading , watching TV, talking , or just chilling. As this was the only space with comfortable/soft seating , it meant I spent my spare evenings sitting on a hard basic chair in my solo room or tiny dining room.
Won’t stay here again
I stayed here before and had a wonderful experience, which is why I selected the hostel upon my return to Auckland. Unfortunately, the experience was not so great this time. Cleaning had waned a bit as the bathrooms were not up to par most days. There were dirty dishes left in the refrigerator in the room. Most disgusting was when my roommate decided to bring a random person from outside into the room and have sex whilst I was in the room, in the middle of the day. I notified the hostel attendant who told them to leave. But to my surprise he negotiated with the roommate his return to the room if I permitted. I thought it was very unprofessional and discrediting to put a guest in that position. I was a paying customer deserving of comfort and security. If I did not care about those things I would have just stayed on the street. But I do and both were violated by my roommate and the attendant failed to validate my concerns by negotiating with the offender and failing to enforce company policy (and if no policy exists, it should!). I will return to Auckland... I will never stay at this hostel again.
Good location. Really clean Having to vacate parking by 7am a bit early
It was exactly what I needed for the night.
Great location at a very affordable price.
Located in the Central Business District of Auckland, this is a very facility for the budget minded traveller. It is just a short 15 minute walk down Queen Street to the waterfront and is in close proximity to many shops and amenities on both K street and Queen Street.
Clean hostel, perfect for an overnighter
Stay here once a week when working out of my Auckland office. Female only floor which is ideal when you're sharing a bathroom. Facilities are always immaculately clean and tidy - cleanest hostel I've ever stayed in. For the first time I was allocated a room on the Greys Ave side of the building (the back) which was 100% quieter than the Vincent Street (front) of the building due to the way noise travels up from the street and the busy intersection in front of the hostel. Will definitely request my room on that side from now on! If you come after 6pm you can get free onstreet parking overnight on Greys Ave, Pitt St or Vincent Ave (meters start again at 8am). Keep an eye out on the 7-9am clearway parking on Pitt St though or you could well wake up and your car is gone. Occasional sirens from Fire Station next door, but not really a big deal.
Review
There is no free wifi, parking space is limited. Though the room is fine but the socket plug are also limited. Hopefully they can change a bit of the system for improvement.
Decent hostel, pretty central location
Overall a good hostel. I got a private room for a pretty low price. My room was on the 4th floor and had a good view of the city and the water. Things I didn’t like - shared bathrooms/showers were gnarly. There was a ton of hair and a used bandaid in the shower drain. There was only 1 sink in the bathroom which got crowded at night. You have to pay for WiFi and the connection is still terrible. Room had no fan or a/c, so it was pretty hot. The window provided minimal breeze. I could hear all the street noise and people chatting outside. You get what you pay for, but was still expecting slightly better conditions.
A little awkward in a shared room and having to climb up to the bed. Power outlets were lacking and just a floor fan for cooler air/circulation.
I did not have the room i booked
I had booked a triple room, but I had a double room with an unconfortable third bed. The hostel said they do not have triple rooms, that had been Expedia mistake. I don't know what the problem was, but i did not received what i paid for.
Wouldn’t stay again
Everything is surcharged. From laundry to towels to breakfast. At the time of booking, free WiFi was advertised as a feature, however there is no free WiFi option. You have to pay $20 for a 7 day stay for use on one device at a time. So we paid $40 for a week of WiFi which was terrible when I tried to video chat with my family back home. Also, on the second night, the WiFi cut off completely and, instead of resetting the router which probably would’ve fixed the problem, guests were told to try turning our phones off and on again. I know it’s only one night without WiFi, but it’s important when you’re really far from home and it’s the only way you have of keeping in touch, plus we’d paid for it! Literally 5 minutes after we got to our private room, there was a key in the door and another couple came in. It turned out that the same receptionist had checked these other guests into our room just 5 minutes after they’d given it to us. I know it’s probably a one off, but the fact that another guest was able to gain access to our room made us feel unsafe. There was no gym access because there was building work going on, which our room was directly facing, plus it overlooked the common area, so it was really noisy well into the night, so I don’t recommend a stay here if you’re jet lagged at all! Male and female showers and toilets are on every other floor- bit inconvenient. Kitchen was not clean. Would never stay again.
Ok avarage
Not Great. Lots can be improved
Shared area was quite good, rooms were cramped with insufficient storage space for the no of bunks in each room. No light or power sockets for individual bunks. Had to fight/negotiate to be able to charge my phone. No air con and one pedestal fan per room, great if your on the bottom bunk, hopeless for the top bunk. I woke up in damp sheets every morning as it was too hot. And what is it that there is no free Wi-Fi - seriously this needs improving. India has free Wi-Fi, New Zealand really needs to catch up! Weekly free bbq was cancelled as they couldn’t get the bbq working so we were offered popcorn and crisps instead with no big apology.
The reception staff were great however maybe there is something wrong with the management? The staff started cleaning and vacuuming really loudly at around 6AM also the noise from the kitchen did not stop until midnight because they did not lock it. The time allowed for me to sleep was from 0000-0600. Next day, I was in the ladies showers room putting on make up when a man came in and told me he wants to clean the shower, I said "give me 5 mins". He then said, I could just stand there and do my thing while he cleans. Because I felt rushed, my make up palette fell on the sink and shattered. All the above experiences did not allow me to recommend this place unless you are very, very desperate because it felt like living in a boarding school. On the plus side it was decently clean.
Good budget city hostel
I've used the YMCA on a number of occasions when visiting Auckland. It's so convenient to the city and one side of the hostel faces a tree lined avenue which helps shades the rooms in the hot summer.. It's very clean, simply furnished and well supervised. Breakfast is available if required and washing and toiletries can be purchased from front desk..
Convenient and easy
Just needed a room for the night as had appointments in CBD. Easy to find, close to bus stops, close to CBD, close to restaurants, clean and convenient. Breakfast was appreciated and staff were helpful.
