Tunamaya Beach & Spa Resort
The Tunamaya I went on 2017 & 2018 is definitely not the same as I went now in 2024. The place was once so lively and enjoyable now it’s seems like it’s dying. The rooms were okay but the toilets’s cleanliness is questionable as the seats were old, had to use slippers in the toilet. Now there’s monkeys going around stealing food and things and they might get violent plus they travel in groups. The food was expensive as expected and the taste was super average. Some days they just simply cook your food which may taste bland. Had to complain to the kitchen to bring a better meal. The beach was full of dead corals and rocks, unable to play much in there. Swimming pool was big and clean. But the hiking towards the waterfall was so good and the snorkelling activity was great.
A Serene Escape at Tunamaya Beach & Spa Resort, Tioman Island Our recent stay at Tunamaya Beach & Spa Resort on Tioman Island was nothing short of spectacular. The resort boasts stunning scenic views of the bluish turquoise sea, perfectly contrasted by the majestic, mountain-like hill inland. The natural beauty of the surroundings provided a serene and picturesque backdrop that set the tone for a truly relaxing getaway. Visiting during a period of low occupancy added to the peaceful ambiance, allowing my wife and I to fully unwind and enjoy the tranquility. The resort offers a range of sea-related activities, ensuring there's always something exciting to do. One of the highlights of our trip was night snorkeling – a unique experience that allowed us to explore the underwater world without the worry of sunburn. It was an unforgettable adventure that added a special touch to our stay. While the resort has only one restaurant, the variety and quality of the food exceeded our expectations. There were numerous choices to suit different tastes, making each meal a delightful experience. Overall, Tunamaya Beach & Spa Resort is an excellent choice for anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. The combination of breathtaking views, peaceful surroundings, and engaging activities makes it a perfect destination for relaxation and rejuvenation. We left feeling refreshed.
Recommend for quite and relaxing stay.
Excellent location nice staff this is for a quiet time out of the hectic city . The area is limited in activities and a max of 4 days would be enough to spend there. Some of the cottages are a bit run down . Definitely worth doing
This is a remote sight to enjoy the beach, relaxing and to just slow down. And you can go diving or snorkeling from the property. Very enjoyable.
amazing setting. beautiful beachfront room a few metres from the beach and sea. all of the team looked after us so well and are having to work so hard to get everything up and running again as tourism opens up again in Asia. Thankyou so much for a wonderful week.
Great experience
I would recommend this resort. Breakfast was just ok. However, my lunches and dinners were very tasty and well presented. I enjoyed swimming at the beach and pool and the reef off the resort was surprising good. Better than expected. There were some maintenance issues around the resort but with less revenue coming in, to address these issues, due to travel restrictions over the last 2 years I can forgive same. But one thing I do take issue with is that the resort recommended that I book my transfers through Blue Water Ferries. Please ignore this request. Blue Water Ferries boats are poorly maintained, dirty and overcrowded. Many of us questioned how Malaysian authorities still allow this business to operate. Instead take Cataferry. These boats look better maintained and comfortable.
Wifi signal very low, However, if you forget your daily work, bustle, or busy days and want to relax as much as you want, there is no place like this.
Really nice place, very remote, on a gorgeous strip of island.
Terrible experience
Truly appalling experience. We left after 1 night into a 6 night stay. And NO REFUND Very poor food. No veggie option on menu.Terrible service (grossly understaffed) although the few staff that were there were very professional Zero connectivity, 0.02 mb/s download speed in lobby. We accept this is a retreat but being able to use WhatsApp would be nice Finally. There had been an oil spill 3 days prior to our arrival so we came out of the sea looking like Dalmatians. Avoid until they get their act together. The location is truly idyllic. Shame about the experience.
Nice facilities and the people are very accommodating
Tunamaya with friends
I stayed at Tunamaya with a friend. It was a great trip especially because the activity offer is quite broad. In general tunamaya is good for trip with friends but also as a Romaric getaway.
Nice & Beatuiful hotel
Nice island location, transportation not so convenience, Service imporve little will be best
Utterly beautiful
A beautiful, remote place to unwind and relax. The beach is perfect, white sand and turquoise sea, a bit rocky to enter, but there are rock-free spots too (water shoes are recommended). Great for snorkelling (sharks included, but don't expect to see many, I saw a baby one and one other person saw the adult one). The resort organises snorkelling trips to other places which are worth exploring. There were some hiccups with communication with some of the staff (English is not their first language) but overall they are all very friendly and helpful. Purified water is available free of charge and the place is kept clean and tidy at all times. The nearest village is about an hours' walk away through the jungle (with another hour away to a waterfall), both worth visiting. If you're looking for night life and exceptional culinary experience, you won't find it here. But if you like reading, walking, swimming, snorkelling, beach tennis, volleyball and beautiful scenery - this place is perfect.
Highly recommend
Amazing. Loved the quality of the hotel, the beach (saw baby sharks and rays everyday ) Coral is amazing, staff above all were excellent. Highly recommend
Stunning view but the food and internet connection are weak due to it was blocked by moutain
Recharging all your batteries at Tunamaya.
Second time at Tunamaya for us. Surrounding area is magnificent. The resort is situated beautifully at Southern end of the Island. Staff is really making everything in their powers to satisfy your needs. Very natural, happy and eager to ensure your stay is the best. As everything in this climate it takes its toll on buildings and rooms and with sandy beach only 10m from your room entrance of course some sand is brought with you but staff do it’s outmost and it’s always kept tidy and clean. So quiet and enjoyable. We will for sure be back again.
Very relaxing and quiet getaway. Resort staff very helpful and friendly. Beautiful grounds and clean well kept rooms.
The staff at Tunamaya Beach & Spa resort were very genuine, friendly, informative and efficient. The service could not be faulted. We enjoyed the food immensely as well. We thoroughly enjoyed our time staying in the beautiful location and the resort gardens were so nice. We enjoyed snorkeling in front of the resort. Had a great holiday. Thanks
Lovely beach resort
Lovely place to relax and enjoy the views, or get active with swimming, snorkelling and jungle treks. Great snorkelling right off the beach. We also booked a 1 day boat trip from the hotel and went to two fantastic snorkelling sites. The two-hour trek to Asah waterfall is well worth the effort. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful, excellent views from the bar and restaurant and a good range of food and drink choices, to suit all tastes. The infinity pool is a great place to swim and sun bathe if you don't fancy going into the sea. The monkeys will keep you entertained, but don't leave your doors open unless you want visitors! Thoroughly enjoyed our stay here - highly recommend it to anyone looking for a beach holiday on a beautiful island.
Nice place but it's far and too isolated. Need to go by boat to visit the villages. Hotel food not so appetising especially for long stays. Not much facilities. No gym.
Great location and welcoming staff. All round was a great place to stay and would recommend. Only place I have ever stayed that you can snorkel in front of your room and see a turtle and unbelievable marine life!!! Only concern I have is service at restaurant is slow and they get orders confused. Sometimes your table will get main meals all at different times. Maybe something they will work on.
Nice hotel on the beach. Secluded; a real getaway
This is a fantastic spot. It's quite a trip to get to Tioman Island, but worth it for the 5 night stay we had. Tunamaya is secluded - a magical Tropical Island spot. Given this, the villas were excellent and staff very helpful. Despite the tropical setting there were no biting insects! Snorkelling is easy and worthwhile in nearby coves / coral islets reached by boat - good tuition if a beginner. Food in the restaurant was of a high standard (especially given the limitations of bringing everything in), and varied enough for a stay of several days - excellent pizza as well as local food!
Unpleasant experience
I personally informed the front desk one day before that our ferry (Cataferry) was to depart from Genting Jetty at 230pm on the 19 June 2018 and the resort offered two departure time which is at 11:45am or 1:30pm, we chose the 1:30pm slot and the reception told us to be at the lobby at 1pm on the day of departure. On the 19th June 2018 approximately 12pm, I gave a call to the reception to confirm our departure time and the receptionist told us they are well aware of it. At 1230pm, we were all at the lobby already and Alvin was there to check us out. At 130pm, the resort boat has yet to arrive and I spoke to Alvin and he told me the boat is on the way and there is a slight delay as the boat was moving against the huge waves. By 230pm, the boat has yet to arrive and we suspected that we might missed the ferry back to Tanjung Gemok and I approached Alvin, and he told me the ferry might be delayed as well as there are huge waves surrounding the island. Finally, the boat arrived at 245pm and we were taken to Tekek Village jetty as this was the main terminal. The weather was fine and the waves was calm when we were on the boat, we felt odd as it was not as what Alvin told us. We arrived at Tekek Jetty at around 325pm, and to our disappointment, the ferry has left and the person in charge of the resort boat, Brian offered us a solution, to purchase a new ferry ticket (4pm) to Mersing and take a taxi from Mersing to Tanjung Gemok and he will reimbursed the cost to us.
We were enjoy during stay the hotel for our vacation. We will come again.
A friendly and cosy hotel
My kids enjoyed the hotel so much as it was just steps away from the beautiful sea.
Friendly and attentive team, good environment, nic
Enjoyable time with friends and families.
Amazing getaway
Amazing place quiet lovely beach resort . Great for rest and relax . Rejuvenating
Could have been better!
Fantastic location! Snorkeling was nice. Service was good but could be better at anticipating guests needs, especially when there is more staff than guests. BUT 1 of the room wasn't ready. Resort was empty but we add to pay extra to get non smelly rooms. Aimed for sea view villas. Sunbathing beds around the pool are almost all broken and dangerous. Nails on the deck are dangerous too. Baby crib probably not very hygienic (1 out of 2 babies was mostly likely bitten by fleas). I was sick with some food but not the rest of the family (BTW prices are not stupidly overcharged). Beautiful scenery but expected more from the hotel.
Luxury resort with excellent staff
Staff were incredibly friendly and helpful right from the start to the end of the trip. We were delayed and needed to tell our next resort we would be late but we were struggling to contact them so the receptionist continued to call them for us even after we'd left which so helpful! The boat guy's are also great and one let us use their phone to call as well. Also the snorkeling right outside the resort is amazing! Make sure to wear a t shirt though as we were snorkeling for so long we got very sunburnt!
Hotel at the beach
We had a lovely weekend getaway at the hotel which was situated at the beach. Snorkelling was fantastic and the massage at the spa was very relaxing! The food was delicious and the staff were friendly and polite. It was well worth the trip!
Nice hotel with good service but food was not good
The hotel is really nice. Located near the beach with nice bungalows. Staff is helpful and friendly. The only negative point is that the food was quite expensive, which could ne acceptable, if it has been delicious, but unfortunately it was not so good.
Nice hotel close to beach
Need Update Jungle trek. Some More activities infornt of the beach.
Nice hotel except the food
The compound is really nice. Room is lovely and the beach is great. Pool is small but very nice too. Pretty cosy overall. Downside however is the food. There's only one restaurant and they charge close to Spore pricing but yet quality is far off. Perhaps only local food like nasi goreng etc is acceptable. Wifi strictly only limited at lobby area. Sand flies are anywhere near the sand so beware. Room aircon is non adjustable.
Nice resort with GREAT beach
Overall a great place. I love how the rooms are so close to the sea. I stayed in 209 - which has a back entrance that opens out onto the beach - a cheaper alternative to the beachfront rooms. The staff are extremely courteous and friendly. However, there is room for improvement in terms of staff training. There were quite a number of small slip-ups which are forgivable in itself, but the one big thing that I found offensive was when I ordered a vegetarian pizza (it was called Vegetarian Pizza on the menu and the list of ingredients were all vegetables), they served it with beef slices hidden under masses of cheese. I complained. But then the next night, I ordered a vegetarian salad and again, it came with beef pepperoni :(
Great place for family vacation !
We are so excited and happy that we felt like we are having the whole beach to ourselves ! Staffs there were great especially lady duty manager, Liza. Except for the highly priced menu, we love everything about Tunamaya
Awesome
It was great and an awesome trip :)
Pricey food
Can find something better
Stayed a couple of nights with friends. The resort is isolated but like other places, there are not a lot of activities or things to do at the resort. The resort also charges a lot for a boat trip to near by village so felt a bit like a prison. The food was good but very expensive.
Miss this and miss a genuine treat.
Stayed here for a short break after the GP in Singapore. Booked on the back of local knowledge, I could not have imagined anything better. The staff were fabulous and couldn't do enough for you. If you want paradise, away from the hustle and bustle, Tioman ticks every box.
Nice place.. Good beach.. Behind resort ,they have rain forest treking. Too good..place is meant for relaxing. Clean n neat resort. Only one thing is good is expensive.
Good experience
Good hotel, nice place to relax !
Excellent!
Fabulous stay. we had a very good time.
Best ever!
Fantastic resort, service and mountain views. Highly recommended!
Awesome beach
It was a relaxing, stress-free stay at Tunamaya Hotel. The hotel environment and beach condition were marvelous. Really worth the price!
We had a great stay at Tunamaya, very exotic, helpful staff, beautiful nature and great snorkeling. Can warmly recommend the massages as well!
Disappointing
Disappointing! ! we had great expectations about Tunamaya based on hotels.com reviews. The rooms are in good condition, but there is ZERO service F&B wise. They only offer one choice of lunch/dinner buffet at exorbitant prices (abt 50 USD) for a meager meal. There was also a wedding which occupied the restaurant, so the reception called us offering to deliver dinner to our room so we could stay away from the party. In the end we went to Tekek village by speedboat and stocked up with cup noodles. Our best meal was consumed in Tekek village for only 2 USD per person.
Tunamaya - nice place but expensive, average food
Nice place, but the restaurant and dining area is a major liability. After having travelled in Malaysia for 5 weeks we ended our journey at Tunamaya with mediocre food service at heavily inflated prices. Compared to the price level af ABC in Tioman prices are 2 to 3 times higher at Tunamaya and the quality of the food is average... maximum. Besides that, the dining area has a tendency to get wet during rainy periods (i.e. at least once daily) since the roof is not tight. In short: Next time I would visit som other resort at Tioman.
Nice place to stay
Really nice staff, lovely beach which you can snorkel in at the right time of day. The resort is a great option for families, could only think there may be better, more adventurous options for couples or single travellers on the island. Excursions were on offer (snorkelling, waterfall walk, local village visit) but did seem a bit limited for the four days we were there. The other resort down the beach offered more interesting trips. We also felt let down by the food. On our last two days there they had buffets for all 3 meals - no menu option. With limited other options around it ended up quite expensive as they price the buffet at twice the normal menu. I also got food poisoning there - not sure what it was and my partner ate the same things as me and was fine. All the staff were very helpful though, can't complain. All in all, it was a great break and still very memorable - worth the pain of having to get the ferry out to and back from Tioman.
Quite a good stay
Private and relax. But someone washing his sandals in the pool, too much smoking in the restaurant, singing too high during meals did disturb me.
Nice hotel to stay and relax.
The ferry to and fro was horrible! There were many mosquitos and sandflies so for family with young kid has to take note. We enjoyed the most was the snorkeling trip with MoMo, from the Dive Centre for the snorkeling experience. Everyone including the kids loved it. Thank you MoMo and Joe.
Perfect Weekend Spot
We stayed over a weekend with 2 kids and had a wonderful time! The location, the snorkeling, the rain forests and the resort all met our expectations. They have a dive center right next to the resort which offers fun trips, diving certification and more. The staff overall is very friendly, but since the hotel was sold out, they were also a bit overwhelmed, which could lead to slight waiting. The food was good. I will come back.
Nice hotel, but would not recommend to vegetarians
Nice hotel, but would not recommend to vegetarians/ vegan because the F&B staff really struggled to figure out how to serve customers how do not eat meat, fish, and chicken - especially when they only offered buffets for meals. The server Hafiz was great at trying to accommodate, but overall the F&B manager should do a better job and not really on the excuse that the cooks are too busy to feed a vegetarian customer. Furthermore, the effort it take to get to Tioman Island by ferry is not worth the trip even though the hotel was very nice and enjoyable.
Good place for leisure trip
Nice place to plan for a leisure trip to escape from routine work life , two days is enough to spend a peace ful pleasant nature view location. Resort location staff food cleanliness etc are perfect
Nice clean resort with good service staff
Had a 3D2N stay with Tunamaya with my boyfriend. It was relaxing and enjoyable. Food served at the only restaurant in the chalet was expensive, however, the quality and portion of the food did justification for it. We had all our meals at the restaurants and they was delicious with a large portion served. The head chef also personally came out to ask if our food was alright for us. We had little chats and it really made me felt impt as a guest.
Ripoff in term of F&B
The stay was pleasant overall. Service staff are friendly and helpful. I am giving a lower overall rating because of the way they hold you on ransom in terms of their restaurant. Basically, you can only eat in one restaurant and even though they have ala carte menu but most of the time, they dont serve those food on the menu and you will have to be forced to eat their buffet, which has limited variety and charges you the price of a 5* hotel equivalent buffet experience. Dinner per pax for buffet is at RM130 to RM175. I do not mind having the buffet if its my choice to select it based on the food they serve but what is not ethical is that we are pretty much coerced to select the buffet because there is no other option.
Good hotel with perfect accomodations. Food is a bit pricey !
isolated!
It's a nice resort but one thing i cannot stand is that it's so isolated! besides kids activities, snorkeling, and a half hour trekking, nothing you could do in the resort... In our 2 nights stay we would like to visit the main town or other part of the island, but there's no boat available for us to go outside the resort. the water taxi cost 200 USD so it's not an option. Very limited food options for dinner. Just buffet/ hot pot/ bbq. So although the view is nice and people are friendly, we will not visit again.
great scenary, lousy restaurant
We had high expectations, and the scenery is even beyond our expectations. We had a great time in the water. However, the resort is not quite a resort to me mainly because of the restaurant. They couldn't offer half of the items on the menu due to the lack of supply. Because it is so isolated, the restaurant is the only option, and we had little veggie during our stay. The pineapple juice and the bbq scallop were even rotten. Although the staff there are very nice and friendly, the quality control is problematic. Also, there was no WiFi in the room, and the internet at the lobby was very unstable, very hard to connect. All these being complained, we still have to say that the beautiful beach, the corals in the nearby water and the two mountains behind.....just gorgeous!
Idyllic and relaxed place for vacation
We booked a standard room for our stay and had a pleasant surprise when we were automatically upgraded to the family room when the staff learnt that there were 2 adults and 2 children. Check in was smooth. Room size is ok for all 4 of us. There is a queen size bed and a single bed. Bed and pillows are comfortable. Towels thick and fluffy. Was expecting lots of mosquitoes but surprisingly, very few, hence no need to spray insecticides or burn mosquito coil. They have only one restaurant. The lunch buffet was normal, nothing special but we had barbecue food for dinner and it was excellent. Salmon and the tioman fish were really fresh. They have one common infinity pool that faces the sea. Lovely view, but could get pretty crowded. Hotel staff is friendly. Would definitely return.
Almost lost my luggage
I had a very bad experience at the resort. Everything was going fine till the last day. We were suppose to travel via the hotel boat to the ferry terminal at tekek then transfer to a ferry (bigger boat) to mersing ferry terminal. Upon arrival at tekek we were told by the hotel stuff ( in fact i ask her 3 to 4 times at different time interval ) that our luggage will automatic be transfer to the ferry to mersing therefore we waited for the ferry and board. While aboard the ferry i started looking for my luggage, it was not easy as all the other luggage were all overlapping each other "it was super frastrating " . After awhile of search i became nervous and started to ask the ferry stuff to wait for me ( as this ferry is the only ferry back)!! . I ran back all the way to the custom area , to my surprise my luggage was left there at one corner with no one waiting or guarding. Immediately i took my luggage and ran back to the ferry. ( i was running with a load of 18kg on my back not mentioning all my hand carry items. ) This is a terrible mistake by the hotel arrange or the stuff .
Great relaxed hotel with beach & jungle
We had 4 days at the hotel went on a snorkelling day, jungle walking to the Twin Peaks, swimming and looking at the coral gardens just offshore from the hotel and generally relaxing and enjoying the island ambiance.
Facilities: Modern; Value: Moderate; Service: Flawless; Cleanliness: Beautiful;
Lovely resort perfectly nestled b/w beach & forest
The staff were excellent from arrival to departure, providing a warmth and friendliness during our stay that made it really feel like home. The food at the resort's restaurant is top notch (and be sure not to miss their happy hour during 5-6pm!), with a great selection of pizzas, pastas and local asian dishes. Everything is organised through the resort including snorkelling/diving trips and transportation around the island. It's perfectly situated on the southern tip of Tioman Island with Makut Village, waterfalls and rainforest walking trails nearby - just beware of the mosquitoes! Highly recommended, and I would definitely stay here again during our next visit to the island.
Great location, beautiful villas, good food
The resort looks just like the photos on its website. It is situated on a pretty spot, with the sea right in front of it and the Twin Peaks rising majestically behind it. I had the Garden View family villa and the main entrance of my villa led to the garden, but it also had a smaller back entrance which led directly to the deck next to the beach. The interior of the villa was spotless and spacious, and all the facilities such as the TV and light fixtures worked well. The garden is well kept and pretty, with fish in the pond, monkeys in the trees and snails on the lawn. It was a lovely back-to-nature experience. The common areas of the hotel such as the dining area and lobby were just as well kept, except that the lobby seemed small and awkwardly tucked at the side of the main pavilion. I found that to be a bit of an awkward experience, as it would have been great to arrive and immediately be within a welcoming lobby. I think a well-planned lobby would be great to set the mood of the resort. All meals were had at the dining hall, and the food was generally good. I only opted to have the buffet for breakfast and ordered a la carte for lunch and dinner, as I personally prefer to have my meals freshly prepared and to be able to choose what I want. There's a variety of dishes, such as nasi goreng and fish & chips, all of which were executed well.
Nice rooms
Very satisfied with my stay. Nice rooms, good service, good diving facility and diving places. Improvement in the restaurants sometimes necessary overcooking of food.
You have to want to be Super Remote
Tunamaya is set on a beautiful and remote beach. You get to the resort by boat, and then be prepared to stay put and relax or dive. The setting is beautiful and the staff is very friendly. The only drawback is that you must eat all your meals at the hotel, because there is no access to anywhere else. The food is only okay, and it is expensive. The spa is beautiful and the treatments are great, again, on the pricey side, but pretty awesome. The dive staff is very professional and wonderful but overworked. There are some awesome dives around, so be sure to ask a lot of questions to get to the best spots (try to get to Coral Island). There are no trails through the jungle, so don't go if you are looking for a trek. It is a 1.5 hour walk on a paved walk to the waterfall and past a fishing village. That is the ONLY place to go. So in short, if you are looking for a beautiful spot to sit quietly and relax, this is your spot. If you are looking for adventure and great food, try another spot!
Beach Villas right on the water
We had a wonderful experience at this hotel. The ferry dropped us off at the Genting jetty where the boat from Tunamaya was waiting to take us to the resort. We were served welcome drinks with cool towels before we were taken to our beach villa. The views of the beach and the mountains were gorgeous and the staff was friendly and accommodating. We were traveling during the Hari Raya holiday so things at the resort seemed a bit hectic; we were given an abbreviated menu for lunch and dinner, and the happy hour at the bar and a la carte items were a little backed up. That being said, the hotel manager was also working to ensure a quick turnaround of drinks and complimentary appetizers were given to us to make up for the extra time it took to serve our food. We snorkeled with the dive shop associated with the resort which was very enjoyable. We also took a hike to the lookout, which provided an awesome view of the South China Sea. Overall, I would recommend this hotel. It is located on the southern tip of Tioman Island so it is serene and quiet, since it is away from the major tourist hub. However, the resort does bring guests to the main area of the island for shopping and sightseeing.
Tunamaya
Lovely getting away for couple of days, very peaceful and beautiful. Can do a 2 hrs trek to water fall and 2 hrs back or can catch boat to drop off point and walk 20 mins. Can also catch the Tunamaya boat to other areas of Island if want to site see or eat somewhere different, as Tunamaya only has one restaurant and you are kind a stuck.
so calm area
it was great staying there. the hotel staff were so polite and room was clean. the food was also good in there. if i wanna go to tioman i would consider this place again.

Its too many monkey and they steal our food. The restaurant food choice is not much. Some weird smell in the toilet near restaurant and swimming pool seems like less maintenance. The view and beach is nice
