Very intimate hotel with beautiful chalets. Restaurant dinner and breakfast fabulous. Nothing negative.
Amazing landscaping and peaceful surroundings, good practical layout in house with nice art and comfy couches. Loved everything, except we found the mattresses extremely uncomfortable - a shame otherwise would be perfect!
Beautiful property, quiet, private and very relaxing.
Beautiful property, quiet and secluded but close to town. The staff was superb and very professional. Our unit was dated, but clean and comfortable and well equipped. The restaurant was excellent! We would highly recommend the Lodge.
The staff were really welcoming and accommodating. The restaurant food was excellent. We stayed in a chalet where the Ironing board was small (sleeve size) so a little tricky to use, but otherwise a comfortable pleasant place to stay
The best thing about our stay here was the dinner, which was outstanding. The rooms are very basic for the price paid. The property, especially the Lodge itself, is unique and rustic - as you might expect for a fishing lodge. If you’re traveling between Auckland and Wellington, it’s conveniently located just off Highway 1. Not much else to choose from around this area.
The bed was uncomfortable The next door chalet was occupied by a very noisy couple I rang reception to complain and they were quieter during the night but started again at 6.00am Loud conversations and thumping around
Woody cabin, beautiful surroundings, responsive staff
We stayed overnight but we would love to come back some time and try the trout fishing. The lodge is on the river and as I walked past I could see large trout swimming. The gardens are stunning. Our chalet was very quiet, comfortable and spacious. We enjoyed an excellent dinner and breakfast here. The service was excellent. I would highly recommend staying here.
Me, my partner & our four girls had a beautiful stay here, everything was up to standards. My children loved the outdoor! The scenery was beautiful & seeing the sun set right outside our villa. Definitely recommend staying here ☺️
Beautiful setting, cozy and peaceful
Relaxing Stay
Great location, very quiet, surrounded by trees filled with birds, lovely view of Pihanga
Great vintage vibe. Great location for a pit stop... Overall, everything about the place was perfect
When we arrived, the room was already warm and cozy. Such a good reapite from the long rainy drive. The reception staff was polite and welcoming. The place is quite old and the curtains remind me of the ones my grandma had in the 80s. However, the cabin is well kept and clean. A good nostalgic experience. Perfect for relaxing and lazing about.
Highly recommend! Friendly staff, clean property, close proximity to Mt Ruapehu.
Excellent place to stay with Family. Staff is very friendly. Highly recommended.
Beautiful grounds and great base for exploring nearby walks etc
Tongariro Hike Lodging
Beautiful property. Very friendly staff that helped with our planned hike on Tongariro Crossing by providing early breakfast and lunch to go. Enjoyed the lodge common area and food was excellent
Comfortable stay
Family stay for a long weekend, comfortable with most things readily available.
Beautiful grounds and niche market and cd have dinner etc there
We enjoyed our stay and the area is beautiful.
Staff were amazing from the lovely welcome at reception right through staff we encountered during dinner. Thank you. One night is definitely not enough at this awesome location :-)
Lovely, elegant, friendly staff, delicious meal, good communication.
Priorities and guests are not one of them
Restaurant fully booked. Had to drive to get food. Not even take out was possible. The restaurant employees said they needed to focus on the reservations. The issue is not that restaurant was fully booked good for them. But not even take out to eat in the room. That was bad.
We were so happy to stay at this beautiful lodge. The grounds, lodge, chalets, food, and especially the service, couldn’t have been better.
Great spot, staff were super helpful when we had some issues with the wifi. Food at the restaurant is also quite good and they quickly corrected an order when we were provided the wrong breakfast.
Good place
Great people
Amazing staff. Very helpful, friendly and accommodating staff. Chef made us a special vegetarian dish for dinner which wasn't on the menu. Food was delicious. The staff make this place. This is how to treat guests.
Great location in a great setting with immaculate grounds. The villa that we had was great, unfortunately let down by the cleaning inside which could have been better.
Very relaxed Great location and easy to get to everything
Enjoyable short stay in a chalet. Clean and comfortable, quiet surroundings. Handy to town. We were disappointed that the restaurant wasn’t open during our stay. Evening reception would be improved by having the fire crackling on arrival - the reception/bar area seemed very old and tired but that was probably mostly because it was poorly lit and no fire on. Overall very happy with our stay.
Stayed in one of the 3BR villas -- very modern and tidy with lovely space inside and out (when the weather suits). Very impressive book selection to for an evening or rainy day read. Short walk to a trout fishing pool!
We really enjoyed our stay here in a 3 bedroom villa. We were 5 adults and 1 child and had so much extra space. The living and dining area was comfortable and spacious, the heating options were great and the beds were comfortable in nice big bedrooms. Our villa’s main living area was upstairs with a big deck out the front. There was a child gate across the stairs which was handy. We were just stopping through on our way down the country, so didn’t do a lot in the area, but do note that it’s a little drive into the ‘township’ so don’t expect to walk.
I didn’t like that we were not able to use the restaurant because we had not booked. We were tired because of a long drive and we’re forced to dine outside the hotel. Also our breakfast turned up at different times. The service didn’t match the price.
The staff are very friendly, and easy process for check in. There are cobwebs in the room and bathroom, so little more property cleaning needs to be done. The location is fantastic, as the property got enough area like a park and a little river close to the property: A good place for family, kids and group gatherings.
I stayed in the chalet, business stop in, so didn't get the full experience. Pretty so-so for accommodation. Disappointed there wasn't any shampoo and conditioner.
Great place to stay
I think the reception staff need more customer service - they were not friendly and certainly not helpful! The two restaurant staff were wonderful!!
Chalets were compact but had everything we needed. Nice property.
We had a very relaxing and pleasant stay in our comfortable home for 7 nights. The kitchen was well stocked with all the necessary items to prepare meals. We especially enjoyed the deck overlooking the area in front of our very large cottage.
Very comfortable, lovely grounds, relaxing location
Amazing location, food was excellent, accommodation comfortable with decent beds and bathrooms. Would stay here again. Highly recommend.
Nice accommodations for a fishing lodge.
It's definitely a country lodge. Not a very good heating system at all but very comfortable beds and nice kitchen. Didn't eat at the restaurant. But it looked good. It's not close to anything, just a fishing lodge but it's pretty nice. 3 and 1/2 to 4 stars and very secluded.. wouldn't be a bad place for a multi day stay.
Great place to stay
Lovely lodge in a beautiful area
Perfect place for any stay.
Great location for large group to stay in comfort. We had 2 3 bedroom houses so plenty of room. Also large outdoor area for games etc. Close enough to town amenities for shopping etc but hidden away from rat race. Restuarant is very good.
Our Chalet room at the Tongariro Lodge was a fantastic stay during our time in the Lake Taupo and Tongariro region. The Lodge is located on the southern end of Lake Taupo and not actually in the city of Taupo (which is a the northeastern end) at all. It's in Turangi. But this location is actually closer to the Tongariro National Park attractions and is convenient for those looking to do activities more focused around the volcanic area, as opposed to the thermal springs and geyser attractions mostly northwest of the lake. Our room was nice and spacious, neatly organized, with ample room to place our belongings. The restroom was similarly spacious, with plenty of room to hang things. The internet was unfortunately very slow, and I ended up using my phone's data connection instead of the room's wifi, but that was the only criticism we had of our lodging. Our room also had a nice little porch area looking toward the lake, and while we didn't have unobstructed water views, it was still a nice ambiance. Overall, other than the internet issue, we loved our stay at the Tongariro Lodge!
Lovely quiet spot to get away from the city. Love the intimate hunting lodge feel in the main dining area, as well as the great food.
Big mistake
Disappointed with this place. We booked here as it said restaurant and bar and we thought we could just stay have dinner and drinks without having to drive but no hot there to be told not available. Bed was like a trampoline in cabin 2. Terrible sleep and no soundproof at all as the people next to us coughed all night.
Lovely staff on arrival and at dinner. Very accommodating! Room was great for one night. Lots of cob webs though and shower pressure was a dribble. Beautiful grounds!
Wonderful peaceful environment
Short break
Really enjoyable! We will definitely come again and hopefully the restaurant and bar will be open Love the grounds and proximity to the river
Beautiful natural surroundings. Private and relaxing
Loved my stay, will be back.
Staff very friendly and accomodating. Great location easy access to river walkways. Second time staying there, will be back again in the future. Home away from home.
Thinks it’s the bees knees
Overnight stay as Taupo was full, log cabin was okay until the neighbours turned up then we could hear every word. Called at 9.33pm by reception wondering where we were and when we would check in despite doing so at 5pm. The wifi was pathetic, worse than 3G available on the phone. Glad we only wanted somewhere to sleep for the night
River access
Exceptional Accomodation
Exceptional comfortable accomodation where great care and detail is put into making you feel welcome and at ease.
Quiet and peaceful location. We had an enjoyable meal in the restaurant. Very comfortable bed.
Top spot for a relaxing break away
A lovely, quiet spot to spend the night. Easy access to the river walk and to some of the best rainbow trout fishing in the world. Will eat at their restaurant next time as it looks to be really well set up. We particularly liked the setting, lots of trees, lots of birds and lots of privacy. No two units face each other which is just perfect.
Great stay - Pictures don't do it justice!
Absolutely beautiful place. Great grounds, amazing staff and the 4 bedroom villa was very very well spec'd. So fantastic we hope to be back!
Spacious and private. Had 8 beds across three rooms, one with ensuite. Eight people would find the living area and kitchen a bit small but would be comfortable for 6 people. Staff we friendly and helpful. Close to Turangi township which has a supermarket. Kitchen is pretty well equipped. Didn’t eat at the restaurant so can’t comment on that. Would stay again.
Peaceful and pleasant with good facilities
Situated 1km north of Turangi on a large site, the Lodge is a very pleasant place to stay. On-site bar/restaurant and facilities area a welcome bonus. A mix of chalets for couples and larger villas for groups, well spread out for privacy. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Dinner on the night we ate in was good without being great. Our chalet was very pleasant, clean and comfortable, but I can't help thinking a few dollars spent would have gone a long way in terms of overall experience. For example there were no coasters or mats, so the furniture had multiple water stains from drinks. There was also nowhere to hang a towel by the basin, and no squeegee to wipe down the shower cubicle, which showed a lot of scaling on the glass. Literally $50 to turn our good experience into a great one.
Simple but great location for fishing
Great location for trout fishing. The room was fine but simple. The lights on heat pump in the room were very bright while trying to sleep. The grounds are fantastic and peaceful. We had dinner at the restaurant, there were only 2 main choices but the food was fine. I don't think our stay lived up to expectations.
Getaway Paradise
An awesome place to spend a few days. So close to the river and the units are perfect.
The bird song and the locality to the river are quite unique. the staff were all very friendly and helpful. I could not get through to reception from out chalet on the phone in the room - it didn't give an option to leave a message either - so i had to ring the lodge on my mobile phone and leave a message. There was no instruction/information folder in the unit. It was not clear that the Spa was out of action when booking. No face cloths in the units.
Wonderful setting in spacious grounds. Air conditioning unit in the chalet was complicated to adjust. The unit from the neighbouring chalet was noisy. Staff very helpful. Dinner was great.
Room was clean .Disappointing shower, pressure very weak and hotwater missing
Rooms nice but overpriced. Meals very overpriced for portion size and style. Not fine dining.
Very lovely Villa, peaceful, very clean, beds so comfortable, the receptionist lady is so nice, Fast reply email from Becky 👍 Our family very happy, next time will come back again. Very very recommended 👍👍👍
Quiet retreat
Great friendly service. The meals are fabulous and it was nice to have it in front of a fire in the dining room. The chalets are like a hotel room - with bedroom and bathroom only. There is also a verandah facing a large lawn. The place is really peaceful and private. Really enjoyed hearing all the birds and the nice grounds.
Couples weekend
Fabulous location and wonderful staff! Great place for a quick break!
Lovely position in nice grounds with good walking etc. This is outside town so definitely need transport. Good “fine dining” restaurant and bar. Apartment was a little short on catering e.g. no microwave that all other apartments we used in NZ had but then again this was a chalet.
Beautiful property, rooms are older type cabins, but clean and nice. Staff was incredible.
Very cool old fishing hunting lodge with well Furnished and clean cabins. Excellent main lodge lobby and dining. Overall excellent.
Nice individual cabins with a balcony facing well-maintained gardens.
Villa was great, super spacious and the resort was quiet. They helped with booking shuttles to the Tongariro Crossing.
Great place, excellent evening meal. Certain staff could have been more welcoming
Great for a family. Love the NZ atrwork. Close to River and enjoyed fishing and bike rides.
The setting is promising but the delivery and staff resourcing are disappointing. Also it is overpriced - specifically the dining room which feels like a no-frills holiday lodge, but charges fine dining prices - especially for wine. Our chalet room was small, bathroom tiny, and no sound insulation from the neighbouring room. This hotel needs investment and better management. We never met Guido the General Manager despite disappointment on several fronts - including failure to service our room. Also communication with guests was spotty and inconsistent. Becky on the front desk however was a breath of fresh air. She offered us a small rebate because of the room service deficiency, and lots of good info about things to do. That was appreciated. We do not catch fish, so maybe that was the big plus that we missed.
Property is beautiful and peaceful. We had a great night’s sleep.
Lovely setting and helpful pleasant staff. Food very good. Only criticism is that the bathroom is a bit small and basic. Perhaps a bigger ironing board would be helpful!!
It was amazing. Beautiful location and polite and helpful staff. Wonderful evening meal.
Excellent stay
All were good, from communications before our visit, condition of the beautiful chalet built of pinewood to guest service. Close to Taupo for supplies, and to the Tongariro National Park among other attractions. Would absolutely recommend to anyone looking for a leisurely retreat in that area of the North Island.
Pretty property, but the rooms were rustic cabins. Bed and pillows were not comfortable, the bathroom was very small, and the shower had issues with producing decent hot water. We were with friends, and all went fishing. They had a good experience, but we did not. Didn’t catch any fish, and had very few strikes, very little interest. One of the two spots where the guide took us was populated by at least 8 other fishermen and near/under a busy road. I am not a great fly fishingwoman, but have a fair amount of experience. My husband has fished all over the world and rarely gets skunked. He found his rod rigged incorrectly to start, (line looped around the rod ), and had fewer strikes than I did. To top it all off, the guide failed to give us all of our snack. Not sure if he wanted it himself, or just erred. I saw the muffins when he was pulling them out of the cooler, but he never gave them to us. Perhaps he thought we didn’t want them. Couldn’t understand at least half of what he said due to his mumbling. Seemed a nice enough fellow, but can’t recommend him as a guide. Our friends, who had very little to no fly fishing experience, each caught multiple fish and thoroughly enjoyed their half day. I was quite relieved, as I had talked them into doing it and was concerned they would be turned off of the sport by a bad day.
great property, private, very clean will stay there again.
First time staying at Tongariro Lodge. Beautiful property, stunning location, great river access for flyfishers. Great food & wine, very accommodating staff
Lovely Winter Escape
I had never been to the Lodge until very recently - and so pleased we did choose the Lodge for an overnight stay. We also dined in the restaurant and we were both very impressed with the food, service, wines - plus it was great dining and relaxing in front of the open fires - so worth the visit.
fantastic facility with excellent service. Food in the resteraunt was really good. Highly recommend.Location excellent for fishing
Location was great, quiet and relaxing, should have stayed two nights. Only thing unwelcoming was the signs regarding if you checked out late.
It would have helped if the outside light could have been on ( unit 5) as it was raining and dark and hard to see were to park etc as I had not been there before. Comfortable clean warm chalet. Good food.
Staff were excellent, welcoming and efficient. Dining was first class. Rooms could use a bit of updating
Joyce was a wonderful host and the property is beautiful. Great food too. We will be back!
Missing extra touches and sound proofing to bring them up to their 5 star level. The kettle was out of date and my friend burnt himself using it not realising the cord was attached. The beds were really uncomfortable and I almost slept on the floor. Firm, bouncy and unsupportive with large hard pillows, I had to use a jumper. Body is aching today. The lodges aren't soundproof from your neighbours whose beds are opposite yours so you can hear them chatting through the walls. The shared spa was tired and uninviting. No microwave or cutlery, just tea and coffee items. The surrounding grounds and river are beautiful, though. The bathroom and style is nice but the executive chalets are not 5 star.
The accommodations were clean and lovely, nestled into an area near the river Tongariro. I was blow away by the restaurant and the food.
We like that it was out of the way from the main road, it was Very quite all you could hear were the birds and the river.
2-3 star place
Came after Tongariro crossing. Place was dated and no facilities. Hot tub stuffy inside and no access easily to river
Cosy chalets, nice lodge where you can have dinner or relax in the lounge amongst photos of big catches in the river. There were never any fires going though while we were there which was a shame as cold enough in the evening with all the rain.
Tongariro Stay
Quiet location, picturesque scenery, fabulous hikes.
Great stay. Love the lodge and location. Perfect for a family.

Beautiful grounds
We enjoyed the lodge, however, I would have liked a bed frame, not just the mattress on the floor, it was too low for me. They really need to invest in beds for their mattresses. But the room was clean and the bathroom was good size and the staff was very friendly and helpful.
