Very nice boutique hotel. I would stay here again!
Space to relax in comfort
NYC is known for expensive small rooms but The William was positively palatial. Having a kitchen kept food costs down and view with sunshine in the morning a lovely way to get up to explore the city. No tourist surcharge! No extra hidden costs. Everything we could need and great service if we needed. Downstair Shakespeare bar a safe haven for drinks and food. We stayed a week and could not fault it.
Nearly five stars
I would have given this hotel rating of five stars, but the night I visited, there was a very loud party on the first floor (I was on the 5th) that went well after midnight.
This was a last minute decision. New York hotels are very expensive. This place is less than half the price of hotels in New York. I definitely wasn't expecting a hotel. I believe this is a brownstone apartment that was converted once upon a time. It was done very well. But it definitely does not have the hotel feel. I think it would be hard to match that level. Having said that, it's very deserving of five stars. This is a great dollar value proposition. Great bang for your buck. I highly recommend.
Outdated, dirty
Dirty, outdated, overall disappointing stay. I’ve stayed in different Sonder locations so I was quite shocked at the poor conditions of The William. I originally booked (and paid) an early check-in for a double bed room, just for the front desk to tell us the room wasn’t available as we went to check in. Instead, they put us in two separate rooms, which were able to enter 1.5 hours after our scheduled check in time. They still tried to charge us for the early check-in fee despite not respecting our early check in request!!!! After some back and forth, they finally agreed to refund me but that whole interaction was so demeaning and condescending. Elevators are super slow too.
So much space!!!
The William was great! I thought the contactless check in would be strange, but was actually super convenient. Our room was huge, especially for nyc! Fully appointed kitchen with 2 burners, full cookware and dishes, mini fridge, microwave, sink and coffee machine was amazing! We cooked our own breakfast every morning. Bed was comfy and smart TVs worked great. Shower drained really slow, that was the only negative. Loved the overall boutique feel of the hotel. Location was walkable to several different subway stations, grocery, coffee. Just loved our stay!
If you have a problem you are on your own...
Spent two days here, had a major issue each day, ended up leaving to go to another hotel. The hotel is mostly run by their app. My first night the app could not open my door, which kept me locked out for half hour while trying to get help via the app as all hotel staff is gone late night. After 20 mins on chat the online rep was not able to help me figure out the problem with the mobile key not working and the pin pad entry code alternative not working either. They left the chat telling me to find staff on property, which as part Sonder model... There is no nighttime staff on property. Remained locked out until I figured out the app key error deactivates pinpad use and locks it. The next day I find the toilet that had not worked well from the start was now totally blocked. I spent next hour trying to get help from chat, (where rep literally stopped responding when I pointed out if they could not fix the toilet they needed to reimburse for room) then phone and on site staff, was hilariously offered a late check out (but no solution to a room with no working toilet and told to use lobby four floors down, or move to a hotel far away from location where there is not subway on east river. ) Paid for second hotel around the corner.
No problems with this hotel.
Great
This hotel property did not meet my expectations.
We loved the William! Staff was very cool and helpful. We loved the Raines Law room bar - great vibe and excellent cocktails. The hotel rooms are huge by NYC standards, and we were 20 minutes from anywhere we wanted to go. We will be back!
The hotel is a very nice place to stay at. Definitely next time will stay there again
It was great. I strongly suggest getting the kitchenette. We were able to cook and relax. Tv didn’t work in one room but we didn’t watch enough anyway. Bar downstairs and the bar further downstairs seemed cool but we didn’t go. If you go stay here tell them I said hello!
Escapada
Un edificio preciso! Muy bien ubicado, con una decoracion de ensueño! Las ahbitaciines muy comodas y con una atencion amable de todo el personal!! Vuelvo mil veces!!
This was a disappointing stay. I booked a room that was supposed to have a separate dining area and it did not. I was given a basic room that was tiny. The bed took up most of the room. The balcony was a shared balcony and had 1 plastic chair. No hangers in the closet making it virtually unusable. We had to be creative about where we put our things. The bathroom was clearly renovated but the shower only had a half wall making a watery mess every time we showered. Not enough towels available from the hotel too. The room was clean but pretty worn. Not at all what I expected for a 4 star hotel at nearly $400/night.
Enjoyed my stay at The Williams a lot. Quiet and clean. Staff very nice as well. First time staying here and will def stay again. Upper floor units are very nice and spacious with balcony and view. Location very convenient to Park Ave as well.
If you can stay in a room that has a kitchen you can save a lot of money by using the nearby supermarkets and preparing your own meals. Great location.
TV didn't work at all and shower knob either.....
THIS PLACE IS SO WONDERFUL
THIS WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING GREAT STAFF GREAT LOCATION AWESOME ROOM BEST IN EVERY WAY
Sonder the William
The hotel location is extraordinary, a 5 minute walk to Grand Central, and about 15 minute to several major attractions. The neighborhood is nice, and has many shops nearby. The hotel was clean and comfortable, although the rooms are very small as you would expect in New York. One thing I didn't like is that cleaning services were not included. The bar at the hotel seems to be very popular amongst locals, and it was always busy.
The location was great. It’s near everything. The outside hotel area had planters with plants missing from having recently been pulled out. The plants and their mulch were scattered across the sidewalk creating debris and muck. It was thete before we arrived and not cleaned up until the middle of our third day. The stairs to hotel were very steep, high, and uneven…bordering on dangerous. Must be strong and agile to lift your luggage up… no available street level accessibility. Upon entering, while likely an impressive building, the halls were very dark and the beautiful side rooms (parlors) were essentially hidden and seemed inaccessible. there were two locked hall entrance doors to out floor “A” and “B”. “B” locked as intended. “A” did not. The latch was slightly off so that even though the handle was in a locked position, the door could be easily pushed open. Hall and room locks are opened with a 9 digit code, which was a good idea. However, lighting was so poor it was hard to see the face of the lock and therefore often took multiple attempts to open. The bedroom was large and comfortable. Had double beds, could have easily fit queens. Kitchen was well equipped, possibly over equipped, except no microwave. Bathrooms were short towels, but staff quickly corrected that. Staff was pleasant and helpful when needed, but as intended scarce. The bar required reservations even for hotel guests. Despite a restaurant in the lower level, there was no room service.
Nice property and location. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
My room faced 39th avenue and was very noisy! You could hear every little (amd major) sound outside. They need to provide earplugs! Lobby was to dark for my taste.
Great location, lovely quirky building, spacious room. Staff could be more friendly tho.
location !!
Super
Loved my stay and would stay again when traveling to NYC
Good little hotel close to 5th Ave, Grand Central, Theater Dist, Penn Station. Rooms are small but unless you have super big bucks, that’s the norm in NYC. Design is good for small space. Good closet with security safe. Bathroom is adequate, towels are good, bed is good. Would suggest offering a magnifying mirror for women guests. Hard enough to put on makeup in that small space but w/o better mirror, not good. Also add another 1/4 panel to the showers. You simply cannot shower w/o getting water everywhere. Nice sized refrigerator, coffee set up. Only real complaint was the unavailability of staff on Sat nite. Waited 30 minutes and he was nowhere to be found. I do know that mgr was called and I also spoke to her before checkout. Hopefully, this was an unusual incident. Nobody wants to wait that long to have an issue addressed. It is also inconvenient to have to stop by the desk every day to have your room key updated. Some employees don’t even seem to know that is the process. That actually was the crux of my issue with the absent employee as I was locked out of my room. It would have been helpful to have known that. Had I been informed, the incident would not have even occurred.
Apparently The William doesn't like customers that come from third-party sites and will treat you differently because of it. My mom and I stayed here over Memorial Day Weekend, checking in just 15 minutes after the designated check-in time and were met with a frown and "I was going to cancel, but I didn't want to do that to you." After asking for more information and being confused, the woman at the front desk told us that the room we HAD booked was not available and our "only option" was to sleep in a full-sized bed when we had paid for a queen room. When we pressed her, she said "we had to prioritize paying customers who didn't come from a third-party site" as the hotel had been overbooked. Instead of placing the blame on their reservations manager, she placed the blame on us. She mentioned a specific guest by NAME and said "Mr. (Name) had already booked the room and PAID us." Making it seem as if we hadn't paid, despite me having a booking confirmation, follow up emails from the hotel, and the money taken out of my bank account. She treated us differently because we had booked from Travelocity and acted as if we scammed our way into the hotel. When I told her we would not accept a full sized bed and expected the accommodations we had paid for, I was met with more aggression and pettiness. After arguing, they finally "bumped" this other guest and gave us the room we had booked, constantly reminding us that "we had bumped someone else" from the room. Do not stay here.
The hotel has a great ambiance, with the beautiful lounge reminiscent of a historic home. My guest room was very comfortable and spacious for a New York hotel. I would definitely stay here again
Boutique
Staff was beyond helpful.
Unique boutique hotel in pristine location. Friendly staff, stunning interior design, and spacious suites. Will most definitely be back! Need to try the Speakeasy on the lower level next time!
The room was stylish, clean and well-lit.There was a high, piercing sound throughout the night which kept me awake. I couldn't tell where it was coming from. I finally stuffed wet Kleenex in my ears and went to sleep. I left my own robe at home because a robe was listed as an amenity. Nowhere to be found. The location was perfect for a meeting I had across the street the next morning.
El personal amable, las instalaciones limpias, bien ubicado.
Would come here again anytime!
Property conveniently located, staff friendly and knowledgeable, area safe and quiet.
I have stayed at the William before and return again. My only comment is that the William has fake creamer in the room for guests when they also have a fancy Nespresso maker. It would be great to have some regular milk or cream available. I asked at the front desk after 10 at night and the person there was rather short with me and told me to go find a convenient store. Every other person at the front desk was lovely, though.
The staff were friendly and helpful. The room and shower/bathroom were clean. We enjoyed our stay.
A bit disappointed
The hotel room was a bit dusty- made me stuffy from all of the dust, the carbon monoxide alarm went off randomly, and room service enters your room even with the do not disturb sign on the door.
Easy access to Grand Central; well appointed/functional room; pretty terrace
No carpet, floors in room were not carpeted and were clean. Hotel provided flip flops.
It was not spacious at all. People were always gathered at the entrance because of the bar in the property and disrespectful of guests.
Room was lovely, clean and big, the biggest I’ve had during my stays in NYC! Kitchenette was ok, missing cutlery, only a hob (that took forever to boil a pan of water) and a microwave so limited possibilities and no room service (I took the room for work, may not be such an issue if you’re staying for pleasure). Comfy bed but street noise kept me up most nights.
Perfect and affordable.
They treated us so well!! Would definitely recommend to anyone. It has a lively atmosphere in the lounge and bar, yet if you want quiet you don’t hear a thing in your room. Love the style and vibe. And dude at the desk (forget his name) made so many nice accommodations for us. Great experience. Great location. 👍
The concierge was amazing: secured an outbound car service for my LGA flight and was very helpful for directions, food etc. I never heard sirens or noise either.
Location, location
Rooms are small, but great shape and good value. The real value is in the location for playing tourist. Near transport (Grand Central with its trains and airport transport, several different subway stations), and lots in walking distance.
Such a great boutique hotel in NYC easy and convenient to everything. I keep returning because the staff is amazing and treat me like a VIP. Like my home away from home.
All excellent. Thoughtful accommodations/design in every sense.
Great find
A wonderful hotel! Clean, friendly staff, large room (for NY), The Library for drinks was great.
The parking price was not what was writen. It's a independente parking service and we had problems. But the guys in the front desk were very helpfuel and nice.
Like a home away from home in the city! Great staff and service and reservations in the lounge for evening highly recommended
It’s a lovely property with high quality finishes and attentive, polite staff. We had a suite with a terrace which was the highlight of our stay. I would have given the highest rating but NYC had a heat wave while we there and the a/c was not able to cool the space. It worked but just not well enough. Very difficult to sleep in 80 degrees... Once this is fixed, the property will be perfect!
Great place great stay
Great place great room great location and great staff. The room was very clean and comfortable. The staff were so nice. Highly recommend this hotel.
Loved the aesthetic and modern feel of the halls and my room which was a Queen Studio.
Location
The building's aesthetic was AMAZING! My wife and I enjoyed our stay and loved the decor. Next time we stay in NYC, we will be booking our stay again here.
I was there for a function and the meeting space was handsomely done and tasteful. The room was quiet and very comfortable. Would have liked a few drawers to put clothes in - a little too "modern", in that regard. The staff at the desk and everyone I interacted with could not have been friendlier.
The location of the hotel is great. I would strongly recommend the hotel to add a ramp for the entrance to make it convenient for disabilities and moving the luggages.
The front desk staff was super accommodating and hospitable.
This hotel was so nice! The staff was nice, as was the room. I only stayed one night but they are very accommodating, clean, and diligent in customer service. The hotel is beautiful, and petite, but has so many cool characteristics about it!. I enjoyed my one nigh stay. The only thing that was not working was the refrigerator, so maybe they should just make sure all tiny nuts mad bulls and properly working, other than that it was fantastic!
Good, cushy place
Nice place. It used to be the Williams Club. I stayed there a lot...it was like a dorm. The hotel now is much nicer. Outlets in my room was under the nightstand, which was weird. Staff’s fine. I’d install brighter lights in the hallway by the front door. It’s too dark, and entering from the outside is blinding. Public rooms are lovely. It’s midway between Penn and Grand Central. It’s inexpensive now but at it’s pretty-Covid peak I’d find it very pricey for what it is. Restaurant’s closed still but I’ve eaten there. It’s nice.
Loved it and great private balcony I will definitely go there Again
good day see you
The room that I choose on Expedia is not what I got.. Overall it was an ok experience I got charge $200 for incidentals which I had no knowledge of until I got there, Can’t wait until they return my money ...That was not in the fine Print..Honestly it’s not all that to be charging that kind of fee.. The room was really small.. I am most certain there is a slim chance we will go back ..
The William is an escape from the hustle and bustle and supports you with letting go of your stressors from the moment you enter. There is a warm, inviting scent throughout the property. The staff is pleasant and approachable. The rooms are comfortable, especially the extremely plush bed!
Good
Our stay was great... a few things bothered us though. First, the hotel bar that we were looking forward to trying was “booked for a special event” both nights we were there. Also, while the room was spacious and comfortable, the blinds didn’t work and some of the furniture seemed dirty or old. We arrived early and, eventually, was able to check in early given our long travel experience to the hotel. Everyone was nice, but not overly so, and I like that.
Best Hotel in 20 Years
My wife and I have been traveling to NYC for 20 years. We always stay in boutique hotels because they are more interesting. The William was the best of the bunch. I guess because it was low season, the Desk very kindly upgraded us to the largest room in the hotel which was awesome. Even if we had gotten the room we had booked, this would have been one of the best hotels. It is very clean and in good shape - room and common areas. The bed was so comfortable - I honestly have not slept as well as I did at The William in, well, forever. Amazon Echo (spot?) was a very nice touch. We were on the second floor, right near the front of the building, yet it was (for NYC standards) very quiet. The location was good - about three blocks from Grand Central. Lots of coffee/wine/food within a block or two.Times Square is less than a 10 minute walk.
We loved the atmosphere of the building and the room. The staff saw to all of our needs. Bed was comfortable. Room was clean prior to arrival, no issues. Great location near 5th ave.
Total gem in midtown! Nice staff. Great location. l will definitely be back!
The room was so chic, the grand staircase was breathtaking
This was by far the best hotel I’ve Had the luxury to stay in for New York. The
Rooms were large, clean and unique. The library room in the lobby was very cool.
very unique converted brownstone. good sized room.
No safe in room. Not many independent restaurants in the area. Staff very good.
