The hotel was nice. Room was a good size (we had a one bedroom with sea view). It was a little dated, though. Receptionist was lovely on our check in. The hotel had a swimming pool and hot tub which were fed by geothermal water which made them beautifully hot and very pleasant. Room had cooking facilities which was useful. Hotel is a little bit out of the centre of town, but the uber was only around $10. Parking was on site, again useful. Overall a pleasant stay.

Beautiful location with access to the lake walking path. We had a lakeview room on the 2nd floor with a balcony and view. Gorgeous! Short drive to downtown for lots of dining options, parking easy downtown.

Room air cons need to be upgraded. Noisy. Tough to sleep. 30 minute walk to city centre.

Quiet even on the main road. Excellent hosts and staff - freiendly and nothings a problem. Nice to be close to the lake for walks. Well equipped rooms and lovely view. We will be back.

Owners were very polite and helpful! Small parking area. Beautiful heated pool out back with access to the beachfront through a private gate. We made great use of their guest laundry facilities. Would definitely stay again if we were in the area

Lovely access to the lakeside front. Good walk along the shore to an excellent restaurant in a nearby resort. The facility had a wonderful swimming pool, clean and hot. The staff were all pleasant and helpful. Great place to stay.

Great option to stay at Taupo

A perfect place to get away from any city. Also located right in front of the lake. The staff is super friendly. We loved their breakfast, especially the berry blast. The heated pool serves as a perfect cool down after a long day. Book it. Don’t think.

Was nice clean and comfortable, staff were friendly, parking was handy and the view was incredible. Also the hot pools were so nice I didn’t want to get out! Will definitely be coming back here next time we down in Taupo.

Great Place

The Reef Resort was ideally situated for us - both to explore Taupu and the surrounding area. Our studio room was very well equipped and the heated pool was a great bonus. For us the bathroom was a bit dated but that would be our only negative comment.

This was such a lovely place to stay. Parking can be a bit difficult if you have a large vehicle but the hosts offered alternatives. The staff were super lovely and helpful, especially at the front desk. I would love to return again as it was such a great experience.

Great stay, amazing view and area. Pool was lovely, products smelled good. Bath was nice. Just a little reminder or info on breakfast to be delivered the night prior should of been mention to me on check in as we tend to forget to read the into in the book provided in the rooms. but over all we loved it and deffs be back

Was a beautiful view from room, room was superb, just something to think about if you are upstairs is the light that was streaming through the glass panel next to door into room, was like day light all night until we both had had enough at 2am....and I needed to exit room and go to foyer and shut main door that was left open at top of stairs, shame really as we were exhausted from our travels and needed the sleep.

The perfect spot for our wee family to stay for a weekend away. Kids loved the heated pools and the room was beautifully clean and had everything we needed. Super service from Wendy at the front desk letting us check in an hour early on a miserable day. Will be back

Everything was immaculate, the staff were LOVELY, we needed to arrive late, the key was left where it was easily accessible, the light was on in our room, the two pools are stunning! We are hot pool people. Absolutely stunning. We stayed on the way down to Wellington, loved it so much we stayed on the way back up to Auckland. There are a LOT of choices in Taupo and this would be our pick, everytime.

Great views over lake although spoilt by roofs in front. Parking is tight if you have a big car

Awesome pool (heated) great for families.

Our stay at the Reef was lovely. The location was great for us, and the view of the water from our room was a real treat. The staff were so kind and welcoming. I had breakfast in my room one of the mornings and it was exactly what I wanted and needed. We got an upgrade when we arrived - our room was HUGE. During the day, I didn’t find the room very quiet though. There was a lot of sound transfer from the lobby and from the pool area. I was worried at how this would impact the evening - but by night the room was quiet and there was no sound transfer at all. This wasn’t a negative - but just something to be aware of in case your expectations are silence. The pool and spa were both lovely - great after a long day hiking. We appreciated that laundry available for guest use. On a road trip across the north island, this was something we were looking for in a hotel - so we were grateful it was available. Overall, we had a great stay and would have no hesitations in recommending the Reef or staying here again.

Not a lot of parking for the total number of guests.Disappointing that the pool options now consist of really just a plunge pool and a hot pool.

Beautiful rooms. Geothermal pool and soaking tub were very nice. Quiet hotel with quick access to lake which has a great walking or biking trail.

Lovely host throughout our stay. Really nice pool and surrounding area with 2 barbecues. Lovely lake views from our room. The walkway out the back gate to the lake was a bonus. Great place for couples or families. Highly recommend.

Have stayed multiple times before and loved it. Prob won't stay again. Felt like I was a problem from arrival to departure. Front desk is never manned, when it is the woman is abrupt to the point of rudeness. Something has changed here. Room & pool area felt tired and the sofa grubby/ dusty. There are so many other options in Taupo for less $, so will try somewhere else for my next stay.

We stayed here one night. I knew it was small, but think that it was this small! It is very narrow and is on the lake, but you are likely not able to see the lake from your room. The place looks like it was recently renovated and the kitchen was well stocked and you could cook in your room if you wanted. The pool/spa area is nice but very small and you are surrounded by buildings on the two sides. So just need to be aware…calling it a ‘resort’ is definitely a stretch…but nice hotel to stay in. The owners are very nice.

Good place to stay in Taupo

Friendly hosts.

Excellent staff . Room was well stocked and clean. Pool and spa were literally outside door (thermal heated). AC had leak but staff advised of this and were very helpful. We chose to still use room and it was easy to limit to no leak or very small while keeping room cooled.

Thermal Spa was incredible

It is clean well located room had plenty of space albeit no opening window - only down side is the parking - if don’t get one out the front there is not much room in the other parks very very tight

We had the most amazing stay! The room was clean and fresh and staff were wonderful. We had to make a last minute change to our booking and the team at The Reef Resort were accommodating, understanding and made things happen without any fuss! It is getting harder and harder to find good service in NZ, but the staff were super friendly and awesome to talk to! We usually stay at another provider when we go to Taupo - but not anymore! We will definitely be changing to the Reef Resort from now on!

Rude staff

Great pools but not a luxury experience

On site pools are great for relaxing especially if you have a ground-floor apartment and can step straight out to the pools. Parking spaces not large enough for some of the large vehicles for customers, especially those with trailers. Fire alarm briefly went off twice early in the morning before I had got up. Seemed it must have been a test but there was no warning. Luckily I had just woken up but it still wasn't a pleasant way to start the day. Door to pools locked in the evening before the advertised closing time for the pools. Inconvenient as that was the easy back in after eating dinner out and walking back along the waterfront. Owners did not wear masks even though stay during the peak of the Omicron wave. Didn't inspire confidence so we tried to minimise interactions.

Nice staff and nice property.

We felt that the “luxury” component of the studio room that the hotel indicated on the site when booking is highly overstated. Given the cost of the room, the 4.7 rating and the 9.2 reviews plus the noise levels from the rooms above and the activity at the pool directly outside our room, we were expecting so much more. The 1 ply toilet paper, shower over the bath and the ground floor room with limited views when we had specifically booked for lakeside views and instead were given poolside views, left us feeling extremely disappointed. More suited to a family than a professional couple looking for a romantic getaway.

Loved it, views are stunning, hosts are amazing. Easy access to the lake. Amazing price. Will definitely return. Stayed up the road the night before and it cannot compare to the comfort at The Reef Resort. Hired some bikes for $5 and hour and had a great time exploring.

Favoured Taupo place to stay

Great place to stay. Walk to town centre along lake foreshore. This is the second time we have stayed and will be back again

Nice heated pool, but rooms are lacking maintenance, tape over things and requiring a cosmetic upgrade. Have stayed at this place 3 times however this time was a let down, seems the maintenance and upgrade works have let the property and rooms down.

Amazing view of the lake and the snow coated mountains. The jetted tub in the room with a window opening to the lake view was also great.

Room for improvement

Nice location on the lake and friendly service however there were a few issues being car parking limited, air conditioner/heating didn’t work properly, tap mixer in the kitchen was falling apart and plumbing in apartment above made quite a bit of noise in the bedroom at night.

The heated pool and spa was perfect.

Whether was cold but in the room was so good.

Great views from our unit,the pool was lovely and warm for this time of year and very popular with other guests.Hosts were very friendly and made u feel welcome, which made for a wonderfull weekend.

Clean, modern with views

We really enjoyed staying at The Reef Resort. Our studio had a view of the lake and we loved watching the sunset colours change. The room is fully equipped with kitchen and having a breakfast in the sunshine on the balcony was lovely. The pool is heated and they provide bathrobes and pool towels. The hotel offers bikes for hire ($5 per hour) and you can access the lakeside walk through the gate. You can walk to Two Mile Sailing Club for a pizza and a beer. It is only a 15 minute walk and it is a place with a great vibe. We were thinking whether to choose the Millennium or Reef and I am happy that we made this choice as the Millennium looks quite dated and different from the photos.

Loved the pools, especially after a morning on the lake!

The room was large and well designed with a great view of the lake. It had everything I needed in it. My only comment it that the area downstairs that leads to the pool should be better lit. Perhaps with sensor lights.

Fab stay, lovely and clean, excellent friendly service. It is quite pricey though & the only negative was that the tiled courtyard area needed a good sweep.
