Robert set the tone when we first checked in and it was great. We only stayed for one night be we will definitely be back asap.
I’ve been staying at this hotel for 22 years and it’s always the best! En suite bathrooms, very heated pool, friendly service, safe, clean, and cool.
The front desk staff was lovely, and the room was comfortable. On the second night there was a loud and violent fight in the courtyard, police were called. On the third night there was a explosion sound at 3am, that I later found out is fairly typical, due to a neighbor that regularly sets off M80s None of this is in the hotels control and I don’t blame them at all, but be aware, especially if traveling alone, that it’s an area to be a little uneasy in, especially as a woman traveling solo.
The staff is the best part of the hotel. They are very kind and helpful. My daughter had an audition and we wasn’t sure that we could check out in time. Without any hesitation or extra charges, we were allowed to check out an hour later.
Great Weekend Thank you Pheonix
We had a great stay. 1st time taking our dog, too! Everyone was so nice, and friendly! Parking onsite was great! Lots of place to eat within walking distance. Bars too! Next trip we are bringing our suits for the pool! And there was an event, soooo much fun! Thank you Pheonix for making our stay so nice!
My very favorite place to stay whenever I'm in the city. The Tenderloin isn't exactly tourist central but that's what makes it so brilliant, with excellent little Asian restaurants and the friendliest little dive bars, not to mention easy access to everywhere via public transit. And The Phoenix is an oasis right in the middle of it all, with that lovely courtyard that feels like you've stepped back in time to a San Francisco of another era altogether.
Love!
This property was special and unique. The front desk clerks at night and in the morning were kind and helpful. The atmosphere was fun and upbeat. I cannot recommend enough
Bad choice all around. Only positive thing was the staff.
Clean, comfortable rooms. Free coffee in lobby. Good WiFi, but it blocks VPN.
Easy to find. Easy to park. Clean and welcoming.
Lovely oasis in the middle of SF. Can’t miss the heated pool!
Worth a Return Trip
The staff is very friendly, professional and helpful. They gave recommendations for places to eat, and I felt safe throughout my stay. The room was clean and so cozy on arrival.
Great place but no Bar/restaurant on site
We were looking forward for our stay because this nice Hotel- Motel style reminded us of the Ace. We book our stays based on Bar/restaurant accessibility. From the advertisement it shows that they have both so we booked this place over other choices. Sadly when we got there to check in, we asked about the restaurant but the host said they are not open and only available for booking events. If we had known this unfortunately we would have not booked. Over all our stay was nice, pool is heated, the people that work there are super nice and the bed is comfy. There is a wall surrounding the hotel so you feel safe and it’s decorated really cute. There is someone on site 24 hours to let you in.
It was amazing great staff
Amazing property BUT it is San Francisco
Low value for money
Very friendly staff, tired rooms yet profiteering from JPM week >x4… No breakfast, not too clean, $430$/night.
Excellent service, has great history, the receptionist was so friendly, helpful, well traveled and knowledgeable. The location is convenient to walk to any other parts of the city. Would definitely recommend and will come back!
Great boutique hotel! Loved management and service. The area around the hotel is not very good but I never felt unsafe.
Family trip to see Hamilton at The Orpheum! Kind staff, clean property, cozy beds. Adorable rock and roll ambiance with charm. Whole family gave me the thumbs up for finding it. Perfect 8-10 minute walk to the Orpheum. Only disappointment was their restaurant/bar wasn’t open on the Saturday night we stayed. A 2 minute walk to Outta Sight Pizza was a blast though!
Frankly, the staff was amazing. The location was extremely convenient for the theater district and getting around overall the pool in the courtyard were very nice for being right in the middle of San Francisco. It was a little disappointing that the bar restaurant area were shut down while we were there. On our second evening there some young people were having a loud party until 2:30 on the floor beneath us and you could hear everything in our room.
I love the Phoenix. Great crew. Great place to hang.
Had a great time at this property. The staff was amazing and very attentive.
The front desk staffs were excellent, helpful, and very knowledgeable about the city!
Orlando is the Best of the Best!!
This was an incredible place to stay, and we felt so lucky to have found this spot. The staff were lovely and kind, and the owner Orlando was available to address any needs we had immediately. Our room was right across the from the bar which was open until 10pm. Perfect for a quick cocktail the evening we got in. We were positioned in front of the inviting pool, which was open until midnight and heated to 80°—so we went for a December swim at night under the stars & rows of patio lights. It was gorgeous and so fun. The beds were deep, soft memory foam, and we were so grateful for such great beds at the end of our long days. The shower was our only slight complaint, the water was either just barely warm enough or scorching hot. We could’ve said something, but we just managed because our stay was very short. We were wishing we had a mini fridge and a microwave, since we were with kids and it would’ve been great for a quick storing of leftovers and heating them up if needed. There were free donuts & coffee in the mornings, & they even kept our keys and parked our car for us one night when the lot was full. We were right down the street from the Orpheum where we saw our show, and we opted for a car service because it was raining, but it was like a seven minute drive. It’s also literally right around the corner from Brenda’s French soul food, the luckiest find of a brunch and lunch/dinner Soulfood restaurant. The food was divine!! Would absolutely stay @ the Phoenix again!!
OMg this was an epic stay! Met the coolest, nicest people AND THE ROOM AND POOL WERE OUT OF A MCM MOVIE. Stay here! Rock n Rock paradise🎸🎸🎸🤘🤘🤘💓💓💓💓💓🌁🌉
I love this place. It's always my first choice when staying in SF.
This was a nice option for needing a place to stay after an event at Bill Graham. Decor, staff, and courtyard are great!
Excellent
Exceptional and safe despite the outside surroundings having a lot of homeless people
Beautiful but noisy
Ambiance is amazing. However they do not monitor loud people late at night. There was a party or something going on and they kept yelling and slamming doors in the middle of the night. Could not sleep at all!!!!
THE GEM OF SF!!! An amazing respite from the city, year round mid century Palm Springs getaway- IN SF!!! Here, you are home. Orlando and the rest of the Phoenix family, are kind and welcoming!
Prime Spot To Stay for a Concert
All in all a really rad hotel with a splash of vintage rock era colors and decor. Its also a kind of paradise from the grime and bustle of the tenderloin. The heated salt water pool was like liquid butter if that's a thing, unbelievably comfortable. Unfortunately the only negative I had was that the bar+restaurant was closed during our time here. An it was a big reason for my initial reservation. So definitely check their schedule ahead of time. It's proximity to the Civic Graham Auditorium was ideal. Exactly what I was looking for after a long day of walking around the Exploritorium, our concert was only a few blocks away from the Phoenix.
Would stay again!
I have stayed in a lot of Hotels, and felt particularly safe and welcomed here! The red lighting is extremely cool and romantic, and the pool is VERY lovely even in the rain! The staff are extremely friendly and welcoming! Only complaint is there is not a fridge or microwave! Otherwise, INCREDIBLE! Would definitely stay here again!
LOVED the Phoenix! Awesome staff, fun themed hotel. It’s an oasis in the center of SF. I’d love to stay there again! Full of personality and character.
Central location with neighberhood eats and friendly staff.
best customer service
The people were so nice and helpful , it was so welcoming and everything is right there, the pool is warm which is nice and it was a great place , there was some people who were drunk that were staying and some drama of cheating but other than that the hotel was great

Love love love this place. When I’m here for work, they always put us up at the hotel W or other nice corporate hotels. When I come to visit on my own, I love staying at this old motor Lodge. It’s an oasis in the middle of downtown with a surface parking lot and a pool. It’s famous for being a favorite hotel for bands to stay and other creative types. Although the neighborhood could be sketchy at night, it’s a great location to walk during the day. Close to union Square close to City Hall and museums and easy access to public transportation.
The best boutique hotel in San Francisco, amazing vibe… Charming pool scene and The staff are like family, kind and friendly.
Nice spot to stay - unique vibes. Staff were excellent. Beds and room were clean. Bathrooms outdated, paint peeling off tiles. Walls looked a bit dirty. Overall, good stay for the price. Does get a bit noisy but we didn't mind it.
Excellent property —
Staff is over the top. Friendly. Hotel is older but well maintained. Secure. Bed comfortable. Beautiful pool and garden areas. They have a bar and restaurant also. Free coffee and in the morning free pastries.
The Phoenix is our go-to for a great, stylish hotel with a great staff in a great location near great food and most of the venues where we see shows. Orlando runs a tight ship with a warm, relaxed and easy-going friendliness. For me, it’s mostly the always warm, saline pool.
Friendly m, fun and fierce.
Awesome, Rockstar chic, hotel in the heart of tenderloin; blocks from Bill Graham Civic center. We look forward to our next stay!
Easy to park, easy check in. Shower pressure was bad
A great hotel with great staff and all around great things to offer, thank you!
The staff are super friendly. It had private parking which was nice. However, the area is very noisy. Very loud sirens all night, screaming all night from transient homeless people. The room did not have windows that actually shut. They were glass mini louvers that always were kind of open, the room was decent and clean nothing special but I guess the hotels icon so that says something
Nicely designed property, friendly staff, nice rooms, comfortable bed. Daily housekeeping was not guaranteed and dependent on workload of staff (very odd) and had to be arranged. Most of surrounding neighborhood was dirty, lots of homeless people and sketchy characters. Pretty depressing. Limited nice restaurants.
Iconic. Now an actual reason to go to SF, just to stay there
Friendly and helpful staff, heated pool, unique decor. The location is both great and terrible. It's close to tons of stuff, with some fantastic restaurants close by, and was quite good as a base for Folsom weekend. But the area also has tons of homeless people and is just plain sketchy. I would not feel safe walking around after midnight, and I have a high tolerance for that sort of thing. But that's what you get in this part of SF.
We love The Phoenix. Orlando is a terrific manager and always says, “Welcome home”! Lol We stay here quite a bit. I love the warm pool and the whole vibe of The Phoenix. There are good bars and great restaurants all around. Also several theaters for concert going, which is typically why we are in town.
Always great. Staff amazing. Clean comfortable beds
Nice and affordable hotel
5 stars!
The hotel has loads of character and the staff were friendly and helpful.
My stay here served its purpose (I got a good night sleep in a clean room!) but the property was not what I expected based on the 8.8 review it has on this site. I knew it wasn't going to be glamorous but it looks sketchy from the outside and definitely gives "Palm Springs roadside motel in the 1980s" vibes (the pictures are... generous). It was sufficient for my 1-night stay but I am glad I didn't book for longer. Also I did not feel particularly safe walking in the surrounding area and ordered-in my dinner (the restaurant is only open on weekends). All that said, the staff was extremely warm and kind.
Clean rooms, lovely staff, but the noise from outside sounds really strong in the room, and the neighbourhood is filled with homelesses, feels a bit unsafe outside.
Great
Absolutely loved my stay at Phoenix Hotel. I have booked at this location multiple times. Very friendly and accommodating staff. Can’t wait to book again!
Always a great time at the Phoenix.
Amazing staff ❤️ The bar has great food and drinks, the rooms are always clean and spacious. This will be your favorite in SF!
It was a gem of a spot, with a lovely heated, salt water pool! They were helpful and kind at the front desk!
Thank you for wine bottle and donuts!
Great customer service and my experience with them was amazing. Would definitely stay again next time we’re in town.
Phoenix San Francisco July 2024
No issues with the hotel, gets a lot of use so bit tired in areas but to be expected. Staff were excellent, really friendly and gave good advice re parking etc. Immediate vicinity around the hotel as plenty of homeless, though not an issue at the hotel whatsoever and no fault of the hotel. It didn’t have an effect on our visit, but people should be aware.
Was A good stay
Ambiance. Its gated we felt secured/safe. Accessible to all our point of business. Maybe a microwave in the room would be awesome. We will be back for sure. Accomodating and friendly front desk staffs.
Fun spot
Great!
Clean and convenient location
A destination well worth a visit.
A quirky little hotel not far from the cbd, with a lovely heated pool to relax in. Staff were all amazingly helpful - nothing too much trouble - and the front office being open 24 hours gave a sense of security. Restaurant on site and a variety of other eateries close by. The area has a reputation for being a bit sketchy but it is walkable at least in the day and hey - what is Uber for? Was very sorry to leave after only 2 nights and have tagged it as my number 1 hotel for any future San Francisco stays.
Cool hotel and friendly staff, however, as I didn’t see reviews reflecting the current climate of the neighborhood, I feel compelled to leave this review. Had I seen this initially, I wouldn’t have stayed here. This hotel is in the dead center of the Tenderloin neighborhood. I’ve seen it described as “gritty” online, but the reality is, the Tenderloin is a section of streets in SF that acts as a containment area for people using hard drugs and living on the streets. There is heavy crime-the night I stayed since Expedia wouldn’t refund my money, there were 3 cars on fire in the same neighborhood, a man was shot to death as he shot at police, I heard gunshots at 1:30am, and as I pulled into the lot I saw two people smoking cracking or meth from a glass pipe. The morning I checked out at 7am, I had to wait for an extremely filthy man to smoke something with a pipe (heroin, meth, fentanyl etc) out of tin foil in front of my car, as he was blocking my car from exiting the parking lot. There were blocks of drug users openly using and dealing in the streets. People standing half folded over as they were high and not able to function, and human waste on the streets. There is a curfew for businesses in that area as the crime is so extreme. Our Uber driver explained his car windshield was shattered twice recently in that neighborhood from people living in the streets as he was stopped in traffic. I’ve seen other reviews that downplay the extremity, but look it up to see for yourself.
Staff was amazing
Great hotel in the TL
I stay at this hotel often. The staff is always friendly. the property is unique and well maintained. It has its own parking lot, which is rare in SF. It’s in the TL so be aware that its not the cleanest of neighborhoods.
Good night xo
The staff was really friendly and helpful. The room was clean and cute in an eclectic way. The area is sketchy but the hotel was secure and really good. People were keeping an eye on the parking lot and my car was safe!! Thank you
Nice prperty in a unique part of town. Overall fin spot
Highly Recommended. Hands down-good vibe, quality experience, and will continue to keep this as a summer tradition to do this stay-cation with a fast 2 hour drive north for a refreshing change of pace and diversity.
Such a cute little place! Loved the ambiance and will definitely return!
Very nice and closed of from the outside.
the staff was above and beyond friendly helpful and personable
Great spot in the middle of the city, walking distance to great bars and restaurants. Pool was the perfect temperature. I would definitely stay here again.
We stayed three nights and this hotel fit our needs perfectly. It was down the street from the venue, as well as grocery stores, dining, museums, and muni stops. We loved the aesthetic decisions throughout the hotel and the pool is heated! The staff were genuinely the kindest people and they really made our stay as good as it could be. As two young girls traveling alone, the impoverished people on the streets at times left us a bit weary, however, we had nothing but polite encounters with all of the people in San Francisco.
Hotel was fantastic, staff was very friendly and helpful.
Surprisingly pleasant property happened on the scheduled pool party. It was a little loud, but a lot of fun and I’m very unexpected. Overall we had a great time.
Great!
The service was super friendly and helpful. The pool is clean and refreshing. The pool party vibe is super fun and the location is close to shows and music venues. Great friends weekend trip!
So unique! Nice decor. Staff is super kind and helpful.
Sunday Summer Radness DJ dance parties are RAD!
Nice staff Pleasurable stay Love the pool
This is a long standing hotel with great culture and history, in the heart of the tenderloin; aka crack head homelessness open drug trade on the streets, ect.. with that being said you cannot hear any of the noise from the room we stayed in at all, inside the courtyard is beautiful, the free parking is guarded by security and front desk 24/7 has a large window directly in front of the only entrance into the property that all the homeless respect. Your car will be safe here, most likely. I have enjoyed my stays here as it is a great price
The staff was absolutely wonderful! They all really went above & beyond to make our stay enjoyable. The environment is very welcoming and different than any other hotels. The drinks at the restaurant were also fantastic. I would definitely stay here again.
i wasn’t sure what i was expecting, but the decor was a bit.. discomforting. the color schemes and lack of wall coverings on the ceiling made it feel like i was in a cheap office building. i do like how the rooms are small, but an accessibility warning would’ve been nice. i couldn’t walk on one foot during my trip, and going up the stairs in the room just to lay down, or going down to use the bathroom, was painful. overall it was interesting, cheap and got the job done.
I loved the place! The only problem was the location and the surrounding area but once your in the hotel premises it feels very safe.
The front desk staff is professional and helpful. The neighborhood is rough. 6 night visit. 5 nights were great. The final night was terrible. Parties next door. Asked the staff to talk to them twice. Thin walls = interrupted sleep. The free WiFi is substandard. Paying an extra $7/day for improved service was a waste of money.
The front facing customer service, Augie and Orlando are amazing; you feel like you’re staying at a families home and they make you feel welcome from beginning to end. Charming and cool beyond words. Restaurant is amazing on site and steps away from the best New Orlean’s soul food brunch we’ve ever had!
Comfort and quality was really good!! Loved the retro theme of the hotel, the location isn’t the most ideal place to walk around at night but all in all got a good nights rest, so yay!! See ya again sometime Phoenix!!
Centrally situated
A overrated middle class hotel in a worn down district of SFO. restaurant was always closed, hotel gives the impression rather of a youth hostel.
The pool and entire pool area is very nice. The room had good vibes and king bed was super comfortable. The water pressure in shower was awesome! Staff was friendly and courteous. We were disappointed the restaurant wasn't open on Wednesday for dinner (we were told only open Thursday to Sunday and only for dinner). The restaurant at hotel was one of the reasons we chose it. The website and other booking sites should state that. It put a wrench in our schedule. Bummed there wasn't a free continental type breakfast available. That would be a nice touch. There was also major construction that started at 7 a.m. Crazy loud! Not enjoyable to wake up to that especially after a late night out and a vacation day to sleep in. Not hotel's fault clearly but guests should be informed upon check-in if they are aware of it and have witnessed it for a few days.

So good. Will stay here every time I'm downtown in the Bay area
