We loved our stay. It was comfortable and spacious and we wish we could have stayed longer. Check-in and out were very easy. It was very clean and so beautiful. The area is a little more out of the way than it appears so don’t expect to use this location as a hub for sightseeing, especially because Kyoto’s transit system isn’t as robust. That being said, you won’t really want to leave the room.

Quaint Kyoto local stay

This place was very quaint and right in the heart of the neighborhood! You really feel like you are one of the locals. There is a coffee shop nearby called Ichikagawa that has lovely breakfast. Lawsons is also nearby for your convenience store needs. The only downside to this location is it is far from the subway. We had to take taxi a lot. The heated floors and toiletry takeaway bags were nice! The pillows were comfy and I am usually picky with pillows (it wasn’t too bulky or too soft). The robes were a fun bonus for taking a typical Japanese tourist picture. They also provide umbrellas if you forgot yours and need to borrow. Great added touch since it rains a lot! The biggest issue was whenever guests enter the main door, when it is shut, it is a very loud bang sound. We stayed in the room right next to the main entrance. So I had to sleep with earplugs to block out the noise.

Great amenities and a quiet area to travel from! Cleaning staff are friendly and accommodating.

The property is very quiet and relaxing and has a washing machine and dryer that guests can use for free. The room was spacious and clean. The only downside of the room was that the beds were small and hard. The hotel is also not easily accessible by train and you need to be okay with taking buses, taxis, or walking 10-15 mins to a train station. On a positive note, the check in facility is next to Kyoto Station and you drop off your bags there for delivery to your room. All in all, we enjoyed the hotel very much, and wouldn't hesitate to stay here again the next time we're in Kyoto.

lovely and quiet

lovely place to stay. very quiet area close to transport links.traditional look and very comfy beds. bath was outstanding. facilities were excellent including washing machine. nice tea and coffee to make.

Lovely warm welcome when we checked in. Dropped our bags off at 10am, check in wasn’t until 3pm which was fine. We went around Kyoto until check in as we wanted to freshen up etc, they offer luggage delivery included in the stay however we rang at 4:30 as still no luggage and were told it could be any time from then and 7pm. Rang again at 5 and thankfully it arrived just after 5:30. Lovely little room in a lovely house however the communal area was a bit sad. Misleading photos. Use of a washing machine however most the time it was used. Location was okay but not near much for food. Check out was super easy. Thanks

Great if you want to experience traditional style Japanese accommodation. Not much around close-by in terms of dining or public transport. Also if you are tall you’ll be dodging door frames 😊

Under-Delivered Over-Promised

Location: 8/10 Communication:10/10 Comfort: 5/10 Value: 5/10 We were really looking forward to our stay at Macha, especially after a hectic week in Tokyo we really wanted a place that was zen and allow us to unwind for a bit. Unfortunately our expectations were not met We were given a room on the ground floor, and for the next three days and nights had relentless noise from above us, with heaving stomping, dragging of items and things rolling on the floor. The noise made it difficult to sleep, and was not we were expecting at all. Also two of our windows had the blinds/curtains removed and were damaged, so we’re flooded with light at night. When we complained to the hotel, they offered to move us to another hotel in the city at 2am - which was obviously not an option for us While the communication was really good, this was not the experience in Kyoto we were hoping for, especially given the very high per night price We ended up booking another place which was a traditional Ryokan for our last two nights in Kyoto and were so grateful we did as the experience really was soo much more relaxing and comfortable. I believe this inn could be a wonderful experience for many but it will very much depend on the room and whether they have fixed the issues we experienced Kyoto is a beautiful city with soo much to do, see and experience - snd the people are just wonderful x

Lovely Machiya in a quiet area ; it’s 15 min walk to the closet subway station ; however we enjoyed Kyoto as a walkable city and took public transportation to different sightseeing places

Loved this hotel!

We stayed in a Japanese-style room and it was so cute and comfortable! We were in Japan for two weeks and this was my favorite place we stayed. It's a small boutique hotel so it's pretty quiet and the location is good. Right next to a nice coffee shop and bus stop. The front desk had laundry supplies and drying racks to borrow which was nice. Overall I would recommend this place if you want to have a quiet neighborhood hotel to unwind in after exploring Kyoto.

10+ Impressed for so many reasons!

10+ - The team at The Machiya Kamiumeya absolutely made our stay in Kyoto exceed all our expectations. The accomodation is superb (great beds - that's a benchmark for us) - we really loved being on a quiet residential street - yet so close to great restaurants, bars and shops. Also great proximity to a range of public transport options - which enabled us to get around Kyoto with efficiency and ease. Hands down it was the extremely helpful, cheerful and generous team who helped us with our stay not only during our visit, but also in the many weeks before we arrived that made this stay so exceptional. They booked restaurants (after suggesting some great and very reasonably priced local places), helped us get advance reservations for temples that needed to be booked before we arrived - and continued to give us advice and support through the whole trip. Definitely the place we'll return to when next in Kyoto.

Our wonderful experience started at the front door. The staff were extremely helpful and courteous. The hotel itself seems newly renovated from a previous use and with an interesting design. The room was well designed and had everything you need. It had all the necessary facilities and a wonderful ambiance. The hotel is well located in the Higashiyama area and there are a number of restaurants within walking distance for all meals.

A Jewel in Kyoto

As with many small, boutique accommodation in Kyoto, this hotel is located in a very residential neighborhood amongst quaint ryokan-style houses. However it is also convenient to walking into town as well as accessing 24-hour convenience stores for your daily sundries and snacks. The staff is kind and helpful, including English-speaking members. Western-style rooms are less expensive than the Japanese tatami rooms. During our entire time there we never saw or heard another guest, even though the hotel was full. A wonderful find and worthy of all the praise bestowed!

Will stay here again and again

Love this hotel! I stay here all the time between business trips. Clean rooms and bathrooms, delicious coffee provided, quiet, and fabulous customer service. Laundry onsite that makes your clothes smell amazing. The after hours check-in process is incredibly detailed and appreciated. The staff is friendly and very helpful. Fast WiFi!

Beautiful, unique hotel in amazing neighborhood. Would definitely stay here again!

I loved the ambiance of the hotel. It did not feel westernized. With a warm greeting from the lady at the front desk. It felt very inviting. The room felt cramp, especially since it was difficult to find a place just to open your luggage space, but other than that the facility is gorgeous. It’s about a 10-15 walk to the nearest subway station.

Every detail of the design was impeccably considered. Really beautiful - gorgeous garden outside the floor to ceiling window. Fantastic coffee with beautiful pour over coffee maker. Heated floors!

the stay was awesome! staff were friendly and attentive. the room is big (japanese suite) and very comfortable. though quite a distance away from kyoto station, the experience of staying at machiya kamiumeya compensates the distance!

We loved our stay at this hotel. It was beautiful and very clean. Its a mix between old school Machiya and a hotel. It was easy to get access to and the staff was very helpful. If I would go back to Kyoto I would absolutely stay at this hotel again. 10/10 I cant recommend this enough!!

The room and the structure are pretty good, the stuff is super nice and they are really available to address all the requests of the guest

Cet endroit est beau et l’on s’y sent, tout de suite bien.

엄청 깨끗하고 전통가옥을 개조해서 만들어서 분위기있고 좋았어요. 직원들의 영어소통 능력도 좋았습니다. 하지만 1층 도로변의 방에 묵어서 바깥의 소음이 다 들렸고 방음이 잘 안되었습니다. 도로변의 차량불빛 등이 비춰 들어와서 밤에 자는 데에 불편함을 느꼈습니다. 체크아웃 시간도 일러서 힘들었네요ㅠㅠ 위치와 에머니티 등 나머지는 다 만족했습니다.
