It is a great place to stay. The staff are friendly and helpful. Very clean and big bathrooms. Bed is comfortable and cosy. Good breakfast and nice view from the dining area. I enjoyed staying in such a historical property.

Very nice hostel clean room and nice area
A very interesting and unique space. Gorgeous views, good breakfast and nice to have a welcome drink. I found the staff to be polite rather than friendly, and the bathrooms near the womens dorm less than clean.
Enjoyed my stay, disliked the lady at the breakfast area
52 steps from entrance to the lobby. All up!
Our favorite place in Porto/Gaia
We love the vibe and family feel. We stay in one of the hotel rooms but having the hostel is part of the charm. Super friendly and helpful staff. Great recommendations. And a view that goes on forever.
Our favorite place in Porto/Gaia
This is our second stay. We love the vibe and family feel. We stay in one of the hotel rooms but having the hostel is part of the charm. Super friendly and helpful staff. Great recommendations. And a view that goes on forever.
Lovely hotel in Porto
Fantastic place to stay right on the river. Such amazing friendly staff. Highly recommend
I will definitely come back!! The staff members were really friendly. I have got a welcome drink on the first night which was really nice. Breakfast variety was plenty. The design of the room reflects the winery itself. There is plenty of place to store things. The good thing is there is a door separate the bedding area and bathrooms. There is 4 bathrooms to share in a 14-bed dorm and i never need to wait for a second to use it.
Sandeman’s is the place to stay in Porto to experience this beautiful city! It’s a cool hip hostel that caters to pilgrims walking the Camiño de Santiago. Excellent!
What an incredible stay!
Absolutely surpassed my expectations. I stayed in a suite and the room was nicer than most hotels for an incredible price. Outstanding view. Staff was friendly and remembered me every morning (tho I was only there 2 nites)! Breakfast was good and online ordering was easy. The record player and records were a great added touch. I did a tour of the cellars there as well and the hostel provided discount tickets. Such a great visit. I’d absolutely come back!
Great hotel (clean & spacious), updated bathroom (in superior suite) and great staff in a great location. Excellent breakfast included with superior suite rate. The Sandeman truly is a gem!!
Look no further
Great dormitory- best I’ve seen in 3 caminos . Nice breakfast , awesome lounge and bar .
Great location, staff were very helpful and the room was very clean and tidy. Will be looking to stop there again!
In an interesting city center.
Really enjoyed our stay. The staff were all very helpful, the location great and our room was clean and comfortable. Would definitely recommend.
Excellent rooms, facilities and location. Great value. Good breakfast.
Excellent service, very comfortable, good location, good value
Great property.
Definitely recommend
A really perfect place that I would stay at again and again. The value for money here is incredible, as it includes a great breakfast in the morning, great beds and showers and very friendly service. The loaction is amazing, walking distance to enjoy Porto and the staff are helpful with recommendations. I have been traveling around Europe for a while and will not soon forget my stay at this place.
Designer Quality Hostel
Fabulous views in a boutique hostel. Stunning design and spacious. Excited for my next stay here!
Wonderful experience
My first time visiting Porto. It is a cute little town. Hotel was very nice and quiet. Welcoming, professional staff. I was traveling solo. Enjoyed my breakfast every morning😎. There’s lots to do around there, wine tasting, shopping.. etc. If I ever find myself in Portugal/Porto again, I'll def be coming back here. Thank you!
Chose to stay at Sandeman at end of my Camino. Probably one of the nicest places I stayed. The sleeping pods are brilliant- very comfortable bedding and a good size with high ceilings plus a light and plug. The pod itself is quite roomy. The location is good across the river from Porto but access to the Metro is simple but does require an uphill climb! The breakfast, welcome drinks, snacks and common area is brilliant.
Very unique and great experience!
Connected to a winery, this hostel is in a great location and is very atmospheric, simultaneously historic and modern. The beds were comfortable and clean, with a little more space between them than a typical hostel. During the day, the 2 private bathrooms were clean and dry. However, each time someone showered, water would overflow onto the bathroom floor and pool around the drain or the toilet. Then guests would enter the bathroom with shoes on, mixing dirt from their shoes with the pools of water, making muddy footprints, which is unappealing. The management should consider installing shower curtains or a 2 inch lip on the base of the shower to stop the overflow. Aside from that, loved this hostel and would highly recommend it.
We had a wonderful stay at the House of Sandeman. Staff was super helpful and friendly. Only drawback was we had difficulty getting luggage up the many flights of steps.
Great accommodation well managed with friendly helpful staff. First class.
Great hostel stay
From start to finish my solo stay in a mixed dorm was a fantastic experience. Staff were very helpful as I turned up, booked me onto a local boat tour and even gave me a travel sewing kit as my short’s button decided to detach as I got to the hostel. Everything was super clean and the welcome drink was a nice touch, the bar/dining area has great views and the hostel is in a great location if you want to be in the thick of the bars/restaurants/port houses. There is a cheap dinner they did for guests, I didn’t partake as I had plans but sounded like it would be good. Additionally, guests get cheaper tours of their port house. Again, I didn’t partake as I had plans but will be keeping this in mind for next time. As you walk in the large mixed form using you key card to access, there are 4 modern and clean bathrooms. Towels are provided and just need to ask for fresh ones if you would like one. The bedroom itself have a series of high and low beds which are comfortable and have bedding with canopies on the side to give an element of privacy. There isn’t anyone sleeping directly above or below you. Each bed has a locker assigned which you set a code to lock, however, this may not be situated next to your bed depending on which one you are assigned. Breakfast was decent, nothing cooked but I did see some people get omelettes so maybe this is an option. There was fruit, bread and preserves, you got a croissant with cheese & ham, yogurt with granola, cereal, coffee/tea
Great place - shame about the noise levels
Unfortunately for us the stay was spoilt by the very loud music and noise from outside. When we checked in the Lady on reception said the bars etc would close at 9pm. It was still going on at 1am. I can only suggest an investment in double or triple glazing. Everything else was really good, our room and bed was comfortable and the bathroom clean and spacious.
Right across the river from Porto. Clean, convenient and comfortable.
The best hotel/hostel in Portugal
The House of Sandeman is by far the best hotel/hostel I've had the pleasure to stay. The staff constantly went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable. The facility and accommodations were modern, wonderful, human-scale, accessible, and beautifully styled. We slept great and woke up to an amazing view of the Douro River and picturesque Porto on the opposite bank. The front desk folks helped us get reservations for our tours, and the staff made fantastic dinner recommendations. We met great people at the morning breakfasts and evening meals. I can not recommend this place highly enough. We'll be going back.
The property is perfectly located for a great view and close to all the action. It was a bit noisy outside with people and loud cars and trucks but the atmosphere was fun!
The most aesthetically pleasing hostel stay.
Such great value for a beautiful location, and beautiful views from the commons area. I was in a mixed dorm, which was very comfortable, with a comfortable full sized mattress. The most comfortable hostel I’ve stayed in. 10 beds, and 4 bathrooms with showers. I just wish there were mats to dry the floors after people showered. I think a person with mobility problems would have a hard time due to the stairs. The lift going up the stair case, at the entrance wasn’t working. For me, it was a good leg workout.
Amazing hostel, beautiful and well situated, staff and service convenient, breakfast included is good for the price we pay. I'll come go there for sure !
Vintage stay goes well with vintage port wine
my first experience in a Hostel and it was excellent. Location was amazing, 100 yrd to the water taxi, 150 yds to the tram up to the bridge (easy walk over to historic district), many Restaurant and Port Cellars within walking distance. Our room was spacious and overlooking the Douro River (private bath). Service was very accommodating and helpful.
The views of Porto were better from that side of the river
Had a small private room in what is mainly a Hostel...but this is not a typical Hostel - the whole thing is very well put together and run. Staff are in-tune with the whole ethos and this comes across with each and every one of them... super job all round.
The property was perfectly located, accessible to everything, great vive, fantastic staff and nice and quirky. Have already recommended it to numerous friends. Must do a port tour of the cellars next door book early.
Best hostel ever
An exceptional place and service with lots of characters.
Loved this Property! close to everything. Sandeman was clean, so cool to have a large patio in front of your hotel. I would stay here again.
The staff was amazing! They take care of you and make you feel so welcome. Everything was super clean. Will only stay here when returning to Porto! Highly recommend the superior room with river view.
Excellent and highly recommended.
Can’t fault the location, the hotel or the staff, they were all really excellent, and nothing too much trouble. Only issue was car parking, which cost €17 a night in a public car park. Otherwise everything was just perfect
ONE OF THE BEST
Amazing hostel. Brilliant location on the south side of the river. Very comfortable and large beds. Brilliant showers. Good free breakfast. The girls that ran the hostel were very good.
Shout out to Marta
What an amazing hostel, friendly staff, very spacious, super clean, good breakfast, ideally located, beautiful river view, the best hostel experience I have had. Marta was amazing at explaining everything and suggesting things to do and going the extra mile to make this stay really special, massive thanks to her!
Great location, great room and a fastastic and helpful staff. Couldn’t have asked for a better stay.
Impressive. Probably the best hostel I ever stayed at. Lacks a bit of atmosphere at the bar but otherwise a fantastic option
Boutique hostel with amazing staff
Best hostel experience I ever had. Rooms (already quite spacious) were half-booked, so you do not feel uncomfortable with the post-pandemic travelling circumstances. Location, the terrace out on the front with the amazing view, common indoor areas, etc. are all big pluses. The staff is extremely attentive and really make you feel welcome (Special thanks to Igor, Yujin & Martha!). Definitely coming back here for my next stay.
Wonderful place to stay on a short trip to Porto. Staff are super friendly and efficient.
Beautiful, modern hotel in front of the Douro River. If you want to spend a bit more and treat yourself, get the river front suite; totally worth it. Breakfast is amazing as well. Great hotel.
Wow accommodations
What an amazing place to stay! Part Hostel part hotel. Full of friendly young people from all corners of the world interacting and sharing - what travel is all about, low cost, great tasting meals were available communal style. Our private room was clean and spacious with an amazing view of Porto
Very calm, relaxing, amazing service, friendly staff and very helpful.
Can’t say enough about the staff. Very courtesy helpful and went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable. Will certainly come back and stay here on our next visit to Portugal
Absolutely Fabulous!
We had a great stay in the suites. Firstly, the location is amazing as it is on the side of all the cellars and so great to go walking to so many great cellars including Sandeman of course. It is also the side with the better view...since you actually have an amazing view of Porto from the reception/breakfast area. It is also very close to the Luiz bridge and less than 10 mins walk to the other side. Secondly, the location is quieter than the more touristy side of the river. Third, the breakfast in a communal setting is superb. Highly recommend booking with breakfast. Fourth, it is very clean with daily housekeeping. Last but not the least all the staff are fabulous. They were all so welcoming and friendly and always smiling and very responsive. We would definitely come back in a heart beat.
All the staff were happy & cheerful & were always helpful. The House of Sandeman is in a very good location, with bars & restaurants nearby
Everything about our stay was incredible. The location could not be beat. The room was impeccably designed and the view from the room was breathtaking. The only thing that could have made the room better were some more lighting fixtures and a dresser. The furniture was sparse which we enjoyed but for two people, there was not enough storage for our clothing so we had to live out of our suitcases. The staff were kind, helpful, and very friendly. The breakfast was amazing.
Loved, loved, loved this small unique hotel/hostel. Its location is perfect, the staff was amazing, the breakfast was delicious. I will definitely stay here again.
Quirky and friendly
An interesting place with a very nice atmosphere. Perhaps not fully suited to the business traveller as the room I had did not have a desk to work at. Perhaps I am not the real target customer as everyone else in the hotel was on holiday or travelling on a budget
One of the best hostels I've stayed in. A real treat to Porto. It's so relaxed and the dorms are so big you don't feel like you're sharing at all. Will definitely stay again on a return trip to Porto!
What a pleasurable experience to stay in the House of Sandeman.
Well worth it
The wife and I rented the private room, and we were mightily impressed. The room was comfortable, the bathroom was huge, and the view was worth a million dollars. The staff at the desk were helpful, the breakfasts were good, and I have no complaints.
Excellent four night stay
We stayed for four nights in a river view room. Staff were very friendly and breakfast excellent. We were given a discount voucher to the hotels adjacent restaurant that was good value and served very good food. The location of the hotel is perfect to enjoy the vibrant riverside location and amenities. Would definitely recommend this hotel.
This hostel was one of the nicest and cleanest hostels I've stayed in. Beautifully designed, well-organized, and lockers were spacious. They thought about the traveller and what they needed. Staff were extremely friendly and breakfast was great. Very well-located. I would stay at this hostel again and recommend it to friends visiting Porto.
GREAT Hostel
Amazing location, very clean and great staff.
More than a hostel!
Wonderful staff. Excellent location. Fantastic breakfast. Best views of Porto! Will stay here again!
Our room was really comfortable and clean. Breakfast options were great too! As for the location, it was situated not far from the city centre and very walkable. It was really nice to wake up to a beautiful view of Porto every morning.
Super nice place, didn't feel like a hostel. Location was also great!
Great stay, would book again.
Awesome
Amazing all around
Best view of Porto
the only drawback was being dropped off by the Uber in the wrong location which led to a long way uphill then down. The view from our room was the best!! breakfast was wonderful. Staff was super. The George restaurant was delicious. I would highly recommend this hotel. Only drawback it is all one way streets and if your ride does not know the area it is a problem
Great service and tons of character
We spent one night at House of Sandeman, but wish we could have spent more! Our private room was spotless, the decor was very cool and the service was excellent. The welcome drink upon arrival was a nice bonus. The hostel itself was pretty quiet, which we appreciated, and there was ample nightlife just outside the doors. Only complaint is that our shower was lukewarm, at best. A minor inconvenience since we only stayed one night.
Your only port of call for Porto
Fabulous setting very helpfull staff great breakfast spotlessly clean
Pleasantly surprised upon arrival. Amazing location, beautiful suites, incredible staff, delicious breakfast all included in great price. Dinner at The George was very good (50% off voucher for the resto was presented to us at check-in). Stayed 2 nights and wanted to extend but was fully booked. Will recommend to our friends and would absolutely stay here again!
Top notch
Fantastic! I've stayed at hotels that were not as good as Sandeman. The staff were fantastic and in particular Andreia was wonderful and very helpful.

Clean and spacious hostel with great views
Beautiful place, perfectly situated. The staff are friendly and efficient. Breakfast is great (though the coffee included with breakfast isn't so good). My only suggestion would be to set the room temperature so guests can't tamper with it, one of the occupants cranked it up to sauna levels, which is neither customer nor eco-friendly. Otherwise, it was close to perfect and I'd stay again
