Very disappointed for a Taj Group property! My group check in was the worst, very slow and disorganised. Actually embarrassing in front of my group. No welcome drinks, I had to ask. I emailed all passports and room requirements in advance, but still the twin rooms were not prepared, no one seemed to know who was in charge. We kept getting different information from different staff members. Had to ask for the tennis court to be cleared of debris! Very poor or no tennis equipment, some rackets and tennis balls are not much to ask for in a five star property. Will not stay again
This is an amazing place, situated on a hill , spacious rooms, excellent staff and very good food There are lots of peacocks which add to the beauty of this lush, sprawling property!
For the rating and the their charges, the property was way below expectations. Even hotels with no star rating would keep it cleaner. Disappointed
Amazing place!
It was an amazing experience all made possible by the kind Accommodations Manager Mr. Ashok N, the GM Mr. Vishal Srivastava and the Executive Chef Mr.Tapan Sahoo. They were very courteous and warm. The room was spacious and well lit. The ambience and surroundings were peaceful and lush green. The guided Nature Walk led by Mr. Muniswamy was educative and interesting. The food was very good. Overall, a truly five star experience in the bustling Madurai City!
Exemplary
The stay was an excellent experience. The staff were courteous and professional.
The property is amazing but they are ruining the “TAJ”name . The first room they gave us had horrible sewer back up smell and musty odor that made me gag and cough all night and next day we requested a change of room and they did change it which is good but it should not come to that . There was “hair “ in the food. The server had such horrible body odors and sweat smell which was over powering the smell of the food they were serving
The staff was super friendly. They helped with local travel and commute. Property is unique, quiet and serene, one with nature. Pandian, Ram, Sudipto were specifically super helpful. They made us feel like home. Paid attention to every detail and provided excellent recommendation. Food and Breakfast buffet were amazing.
Stay with the nature
The over all property was very good. Big sized room. Lovely location, beautiful surroundings. Lots and lots of peacocks offering a wonderful sight as well as lots of photo taking opportunities. However, the bathroom and its fittings were outdated and badly need renovation.
Everything was excellent. Vellamma and all the staff took great care of our comfort while we stayed at the hotel. Thank you all.
Sublime colonial elegance
This is a luxury destination for a colonial era. We were fortunate enough to stay in the main house, which was simply sublime. I would not hesitate to stay here again. We did not want to leave
Super hotel
We had a great stay here. The location on the hill is wonderful great views to the temples. The staff were extremely welcoming and helpful. Our room was clean and very well supplied. My only critique....need new tips on the snooker que!! Otherwise a great hotel
Perfect place of peace away from the noise and dust of Madurai, yet close enough to access everything in town. Great views of the town from the hotel alongside a diversity of birds, trees and natural life. Staff are the best at all levels. We loved all of it.
Staff and the food. The place is serene
Property is very beautiful and peaceful but rooms are not great very spacious room but not clean bathrooms need renovation. I will not recommend this hotel for elderly people who can’t use stairs because lots of claiming My best impression is all the staffs very pleasant and courteous. Especially Mr. Pandian one of the excellent person who helped us lot my special thanks to him. I will give 5 stars to staffs but management needs to take care of this property. Also please make sure when you hire employees they must speak Tamil In Madurai employees don’t know Tamil? 🤔
Very good service
Very nice place to stay.
Nice hotel with amazing service and surroundings
Rooms are spacious and clean, hotel surroundings are amazing and services is top ! Always a pleasure to come to this hotel. Restaurant offer wide range of delicious meals.
Madurai’s hidden gem
As always a memorable stay made possible by a professional team headed by a GM who leaves no stone unturned to ensure that each guest feels like he is returning home. The renovations that are taking shape are changing the character of the hotel by modernising it but retaining the heritage aspect of the property.
Peaceful resort like atmosphere. But room service staff do not understand English and fail to deliver your food order. 👎
The hotel sits atop
Lovely old colonial style property on the top of a hill with sweeping views of the surrounding area. Very comfortable and clean rooms, nice pool area, large well-kept grounds with tame peacocks everywhere. The one restaurant serves great food with very attentive and friendly staff. They did fail to meet me at the airport, despite written conformation, but they don't lose a star as everything else about the hotel is so delightful. Note that it is on a hill with lots of steps, but I'm 70 and had no difficulties.
Fabulous hotel! Will definitely return!
I think this is the third time we have stayed in this hotel. Nothing seems to have improved since the first time. The rooms are bare and spartan and need renovation. While I agree that it is a heritage property, the facilities and decor inside the rooms could be improved a lot.
Vinodh and Arul were exceptional in providing services to us Highly recommend staying here lovely place with nice views
Nice but tired!!
Staff very helpful would advise on meals and you could ask for meals not on menu. Bitten to death by mosquitoes!!! Hotel reception very nice but rooms are a little tired. We were upgraded to a spacious room and were told that it had recently been renovated. New curtains but floor covering had holes in it!!!.
Very beautiful serene property. Full of natural beauty. Amazing and very helpful staff. Enjoyed the company of beautiful 100s of peacocks. The property is little dated. Couple of minor maintenance issue due to age of the property. The only con is the property is a little bit secluded so you would need a vehicle to go into the town and is not walkable, but the front desk was very helpful in arranging a cab if you need it.
A great stay
We could not have had a better stay. Every staff member was attentive, friendly, efficient. I will make particular mention of Mr. Pandyan at the front desk, who assisted us with travel arrangements, but there were also numerous restaurant staff members who were so natural and welcoming. The food was also excellent and the room very comfortable. I cannot recommend the Pasumalai highly enough.
Very relax and quite location from the city. Service very good, especially Subash.
This hotel is an oasis- it's so beautiful and the staff were helpful, friendly, and so thoughtful. The property felt safe and it was like being taken to another calm world.
Stately premises. The hotel is a calm and relaxing oasis amidst the hustle and bustle of Madurai traffic. Service was consistently polite, efficient and professional. Breakfast spread was extensive and tasty. All in all a very delightful experience.
A refreshing break
Awesome location with numerous trees and greenery. A few peacocks were in the property and several birds too. In short a grest break in a forest within the city.
excellent front desk staff and very humble
Amazing stay
Fantastic location and friendly staff.
An Oasis of Peace
Hospitality that others should learn from. Despite the pandemic the hotel is still the perfect haven to find solace in and once you enter the promises of this oasis of peace everything works and falls in place. The rooms are welcoming, the facilities impeccable and the food on offer delectable. The GM if the hotel of probably the most hands on GM in any hotel. Tajness is not a slogan here but a way of life.
The one and only place to stay at Madurai
Rooms were old. However the location is excellent and the food was good. I was told that the rooms are being refreshed.
Cozy rooms with amazing view
Best place to stay in Madurai!!!
Room was very spacious clean but it had smell of mold it was on the furniture property is otherwise nice but furniture should be replaced
Quiet, secluded, green property away from the hustle and bustle of Madurai. Faded glory perhaps describes it best.
Old heritage property converted to a hotel. Wake up to the chants of the temple city interspersed with the calls of the resident peacocks. Amazingly attentive staff and a proactive general manager. The only place to stay in Madurai.
very clean.courteous staff. I would not recommend eating here as food is not as good as the ambience.
Palace type rooms are unique. Breakfast is good . Ambience is nice on top of hills
Everything was absolutely amazing and the property was stunning. Rooms were gorgeous
Old Colonial Style Facility with Personal Service
Unparalleled personal attention from the time you set foot in the hotel. My wife could not eat anything solid because of dental surgery. Mr. Arul and the Chef Suresh came and made sure what she liked and specially cooked for her needs. The staff are excellent. We chose the place because it is a throw back to an old British colonial style bungalow. It is beautifully situated on top of a hill with a wide view of Madurai. There is only one restaurant and its strength is the local food which is excellent in quality. You have good company with many peacocks coming right up to you. The room was large and clean. However, for a Taj hotel one would expect a better a cleaner spa.
Lovely peaceful oasis in this bustling city. Set on a small hill with far reaching views over the city and surrounding area. Comfortable room and excellent service.
An excellent property, beautiful grounds and friendly and professional staff. Enjoyed our stay!
Nice Hotel
This is probably the most upscale hotel in Madurai, though there isnt much competition for luxury in this city. The only thing I didnt like was that the hotel was spread out like a maze with a lot of hills and stairs, and the food at the restaurant was extremely expensive (more than USA prices) but if you are without car then you have no other choice. Free breakfast and service was top notch.
Good service pleasant stay
stayed for 4 nights at this hotel. staff were friendly and approachable. on our first night, the air-con was out of service suddenly and staff were fast to respond to allow us to change to another room. On the next day, GM also came to apologise for this inconvenience and offer to provide us with complimentary spa service. They were also very considerate, beside providing us with a baby cot which we requested, they also provide us a bath tub for us to shower our baby. staff were polite and courteous as they greeted us whenever we walk around the hotel. overall, it was a pleasant and memorable stay at this hotel. will definitely revisit this place if we are to go to Madurai again
Best food ever
Hands down best chef ever. I asked chef to do sample dishes and got to try Lot of amazing dishes.
good location
Bedroom quality was pretty average. Bed linen, blanket, etc need refresh as it looked poor.
A Great Stay
Hotel was nice just one thing if your hiring your own vehicle then it is good otherwise you have park vehicle at bottom of the hill on the hotel is located...otherwise, everything is good just that bar and restaurant close at 11.00 pm which is very early
“Old English residence- now a hotel”
It was not all that good Lot of hype!
Horrible room was given
Old old. Old linens and very moldly smell. Bed was extremely uncomfortable for two people. The walls were old and moldy. Was very very disappointed after paying $138 US dollar for one night. It was room 16
Comfortable Stay
It was a short stay, so it is difficult to assess the hotel thoroughly.
Excellent hotel to relax
The hotel is situated on a hill and secluded. Ideal for relaxing! Food is excellent. However, price has increased sharply compared to last year! It was too hot to venture out in July. The hotel staff was friendly, but sometime the reception staff was not very attentive. This is only a minor criticism. I would recommend this hotel for families wanting to visit the amazing local temples of timeless architecture.
Very nice & comfortable stay.
Excellent service to details.
Overall stay was memorable and very comfortable. Excellent restaurant service by Baikkia Lakshmi and Arul's staff. The hotel was set in a nature like atmosphere. I would strongly recommend this hotel for anybody including overseas folks like us that they should choose this hotel over other hotels in Madurai.
Away from the city centre on a hilltop with a view
Had a pleasant stay. Room was clean and good. Staff were friendly and helpful.
Beautiful grounds, comfortable, slightly outdated
Beatiful grounds with nice views, good restaurant.
Nice hotel
The hotel has plumbing issues.
Enchanting hotel with Peacocks
We had a pleasant stay, Excellent services, Unique property , good food
Nice location on top of the hill
Stay was very nice and hotel and its staff are very good.
Nice colonial style hotel
Nice colonial style hotel. Quiet and lots of greenary. Room is clean. Buffet breakfast has a wide spread. Hotel staff is helpful and friendly. Will definitely book this hotel again if I return to Madurai.
Good hotel with views of Madurai below
Enjoyed two nights here. Food was excellent, room had a pleasant view of swimming pool and it was good to be up on top of a hill away fom the intense heat of Madurai but near enough for ease of access to sights.
Nice hotel
good rooms, friendly staff and great views. Breakfast was excellent. Food was generally good. Staff was friendly. Hotel drivers are very courteous
Wonderful hotel
This is a beautiful hotel with an interesting history. It is a few kilometers from the Meenakshi temple complex, but a welcome oasis after a day in town. I took auto rickshaws back and forth
Nice, but needs a makeover
Nice staff. Hotel grounds beautiful, but the hotel itself is in need of a makeover.
Charming old hotel
What a charming old hotel. It is well run and atmospheric with a view of the Manakshi Temple. Located a short drive away ffrom the center of the hectic city on a hill, we found it to be perfect for our needs. The food was great, the service first class, our upgraded room was huge and the beautiful gardens were a plus.
Comfortable hotel with view of city and temple
the hotel is a fine old Colonial mansion converted to a very spacious and comfortable hotel. Beautiful garden environment, with swimming pool. an excellent restaurant with very helpful staff. Situated on a hill with fine views of city, Menakshi temple and Elephant mountain. I had a very pleasant stay.
excellent as always very nice service spa was great lovely laid back ambience
Great for families
Superb with personal services
Amazing service by the staff! Nice facilities. Best hotel in Madurai.
Great stay in Madurai
Great hotel with lots of historic charm.
LOCATION
Situated at a nice location. Has a wonderful garden with peacocks and other birds. Good to walk and take rest without any pollution.
A fantastic hotel to relax!
An absolutely great hotel to relax in! Great food! Very helpful staff! Hotel car drivers are highly motivated, trained and very polite! I wish, all the other hotels follows the same ethos! Will stay there again for an extended period next year!
Fantastics and sublime
What a fantastic place to spend few days in outstanding natural beauty, surrounded by peacocks and green trees, offering an exquisite food in a beautiful setting of restaurant with lavish views over the valleys. The staff are sublimely pleasant who climb steps after steps to serve you in your rooms. when in Madurai, stay in this small but high standards place.
Overpriced for what it is.
Ok. Nice location and ambiance. I feel it is overpriced
Peacocks and a Great View
I came to Madurai to visit Temples and Akshaya Trust. A friend had just stayed at this hotel and liked it plus I really like the Taj property group. Coming from the Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai I have a really high standard. This hotel is nice, comfortable and the staff very helpful but it is a tiny bit of a country cousin. The view in the morning from the breakfast space is super and I really liked all the peacocks wandering around however if you have any walking issues it is quite a walk from one's room. The evening head chef made me a wonderful dinner and I even asked for a bit more of his appetizers. I would stay here again especially because of the lovely location.
Truly exceptional place, great experience
Fabulous property, perched on a hill overlooking the temple, with peacocks idling by. General Manager Indranil and his team put up a great show and we were treated like royalty. Wonderful experience.
Inconsistent Service
I stayed at this hotel two separate times - the first stay a week ahead of the second stay. First stay of two nights had been booked direct. Second stay of one night booked on Expedia. Vast difference between the two stays for the room and for the quality of service. Lovely place, but the room is better when booked directly with hotel. Deluxe option is better than standard option but both are good. Restaurant staff are inconsistent on service, but they also work extremly long days! Food is good. Drinks are expensive. Property is wonderful! An oasis away from the city hustle. A pleasure!
nice hotel
good ambience, lovely hotel..good staff. there were pretty peacocks around, location and rooms are very good.
Managerial issues
I had booked the hotel for my parents as they were transiting. It was ther anniversary, so i called up to request for a small cake to be sent to them, on payment. However, the hotel staff was kind enough to assume me that it would be complimentary. however, when i called up my parents at about 9 PM,they said they hadn't received any cake from the hotel.I called up the hotel to speak to the duty manager, and turns out he wasnt available.I left him a message to call me back, but the call never came. At about 10 PM, a cake was delivered to my sleepy parents. Its not a big deal,, probably someone slipped up, but I expected someone to call me back, even if the cake was not delivered. Rather, by delivering the cake at 10 PM, the whole meaning was lost..Didn't expect this from Taj.
premium property on a hill
We enjoyed the taj hospitality to the hilt. The location was away from the hustle bustle of the city and property was well maintained. We will always stay here in future trips to the city..
nice stay in a grand hotel
my wife and i enjoyed two wonderful days at the Gateway touring Madurai; our room was comfortable (and enormous) with seating for 4 on the porch, a king bed, couch, desk, table, and large bathroom; the restaurant was quite good, though we found the a la carte dinner and lunch items to be better than those on the buffet; our tuk tuk driver, Pandy (aka "007"), arranged by the front desk, twice took us to the main temple in town (about 15-20 mins.) and waited several hours to take us back to the hotel; he was exceptional.
Lovely Colonial Building
INteresting place well maintained. You can see peacocks all around dancing. Good pool and TT and gaming options. Kids loved the food and ambience.
Good Ambience but that's it.
The arrival at Hotel was pleasant with Dancing Peacocks in view. The check in was messy. The room # 33 is as large as a small hall on ground floor. But room did not had any toiletries or sleepers except washing soap and shampoo and had a stinking smell as found in old unmaintained hotels. There was a big spider roaming around in room and made sleeping difficult. There is not much to write about except the hotel is located on a small hill with beautiful view of city and surroundings with lots of birds all around. It is not value for money you pay.
Beautiful greenery park stay away from city
Hotel is away from city pollution and yet close drive to city . There is even a temple in the hotel premise. A real true Temple City. The sound from the temples gives excellent ambience . Will never stay anywhere else in Madurai the next time. Peacocks everywhere. What a sight. The Indian oil massage is the best experience . Food is great and service is excellent.
Hotel on top of the town
Nice hotel, staff very friendly and it's located at the top of a hill that over looks the city. Peacocks galore walk around the hotel grounds
Great location
Very large property on a hill with peacocks strutting in lush surroundings . Well maintained, food is excellent Staff are extremely courteous I'm a regular guest
DIRTY!!!
-Dirty rooms, inexperienced staff. Most of the time the staff looked lost especially around the breakfast buffet area. The room we checked into had hairs on the beddings and mould in the bathroom. We got moved to a smaller room, with double bed even though we had paid for a superior room with king bed. -They charge for Wifi. Funny thing when we went to pay for it, another guest was checking in and said: I never pay for wifi so i'm not going to this time as this should be free. The reception said it was fine and he wouldnt have to pay when we had to pay for it. -During our stay, we wanted to call back home to Australia- reception told us it will only be 250rupees for half an hour, but when we went to pay outstanding amounts upon checking out, they told us we had to pay 2600 rupees for a 15 minute call- had to debate this with the manager until he accepted that they had made a mistake in quoting us the amount and told us we didn't have to pay this.
excelant location with natural surroundings
good..but could be better
best hotel in madurai
It was one of the best experience i had. The hotel is ideal retreat from busy life and crowdy city. A nice view from the Pasumalai hill of the city and surrounding natural forest like environment is very soothing. Front-dest manager and restaurant and other staffs were very cordial and prompt. Perhaps the best Taj hotel in India in terms of hospitality and serenity.
peaceful and scenic!
nice hotel for a relaxing holiday!
This isa beautiful resort hotel, just on the outskirts of Madurai up on a hill. Lovely views, but the best thing is the staff- they were all just so lovely. The food is excellent too.
Relief from the city crowds of Madurai
After staying in the city for convenience to sights and interest, we treated ourselves to stay at Gateway for the third day in the area. The hotel is a bit far from the city given slow traffic, but it was a lovely respite. The dining was exceptional, it was quiet, with views of the countryside, and offered beautiful walks through the gardens. We also enjoyed the magician on site, and the opportunity for a puja.
A good stopover hotel.
A return visit. Easy access from Bangalore cantonment train station and airport next morning. Welcoming staff and very helpful and obliging for early / late check-in to accommodate transport needs. And of course the wonderful Kavalli restaurant in the garden which is always a highlight!
Simple Luxury
This hotel was recommended by my cousin and though a Taj, the Madurai or Tamil flavor is not diminished or ignored. The food at the restaurant, top quality service on the premises and comfortable/immaculate/spacious rooms were much needed after a long flight and drive. I thought the cost was very reasonable especially compared to the Mumbai Taj Hotel. My aunt and mother who are both elderly really appreciated having stayed here.
Greats!
Oasis amid the chaos and perfect for relaxation, Very professional and courteous staff, well trained.
Fantastic!
I stayed in the executive room. Amenities to comfort was first class! The best place to stay in Madurai.!
Gateway Madurai | Hotel in Madurai | Travala.com
Lovely location; me and my daughter loved it . The walks alongside with the peacocks were a one of a kind experience. Given the landscape and location of the rooms it is not suitable for old people or people with leg/walking problems as it involves some level of walking around on uneven terrains even to reach the go cart. Given the location and peacocks I personally believe it is a very expensive stay.
