We can’t wait to return
We were greeted with a smile, and every interaction with the staff was pleasant. The location was convenient, the information shared was helpful, and we enjoyed the history in ambience of the property.
Wonderful friendly service and beautiful building. Free Parking on site a bonus.
Very nice staff and a very well kept room/hotel. Would visit again!
A true small luxury hotel!
I really liked my overall stay, however, I wish the room felt a little cozier. My room felt like I was staying at a Marriott/hyatt in terms of modernity and we were looking for more of a warm room.
Gorgeous hotel with friendly staff
Loved this hotel. Front desk staff were so friendly and welcoming. They helped us with our bags, offered us a welcome drink, and answered all of our questions. The room we stayed in was stunning, especially the bathroom. The bed was very comfortable. Loved the coffee in the morning. I think because of the age of the building, it is easy to hear your upstairs neighbors - not a big deal, just something to keep in mind if you're a light sleeper.
Highly Recommend The Francis
We were thrilled with The Francis and wish we could have stayed longer!
The Francis - good choice
nice location, friendly, helpful staff.
A beautiful hotel with welcoming, friendly staff. Our room was immaculate. The surrounding area seemed a bit rough and not a place for leisurely evening strolls.
Staff was great; very welcoming and friendly. Facility was very nice. We enjoyed our stay here.
The Francis is a small boutique hotel near Maine Medical Center within short walking distance of several good restaurants and stores. The building is a gracious old home on Congress Street and the rooms are somewhat spartan but comfortable. Avoid the 3rd floor rooms which tend to be smaller. Rooms that face Congress street can be noisy as well. There is on-site free parking but finding a space can be a problem.
Let Down
We’ve been staying at The Francis for five years now (less one year for the pandemic). The first stay was lovely… but each one afterwards has been a little less stellar each time. The common areas and rooms are looking worn… the front desk less engaged in the guest experience… housekeeping is hit or miss. This stay is likely my last. I’ll pay a little more for a better experience at another Portland Hotel.
Lovely small hotel that's extremely comfortable and well-appointed. Make sure to have dinner at the Wayside Tavern - it's excellent. We will definitely stay here again.
Great location, lovely building with spacious rooms and nice furnishings. Staff is knowledgeable with impeccable attention to detail
Quaint and cozy with the most helpful staff. The most comfortable pillows ever!!Easy parking and easy drive to the harbor. Would definitely stay at the Francis again!
Fantastic stay
Fantastic stay. Was a little nervous as it was a boutique hotel. Beautifully renovated mansion with modern updates for comfort but kept the elegance of the old mansion. Shane welcomed us at front desk and was awesome. Gave us suggestions for dinner and getting around in Portland. Would definitely stay again
Great hotel!
Beautiful local hotel. Clean, super comfy bed, great shower, elevator a plus, convenient parking. Staff great. Highly recommend.
Beautiful historical property within walking distance to State Theater. The building and neighborhood is a little noisy/rowdy. All staff are amazing and welcoming.
Cute Portland stay
Great location. Cute boutique hotel. Friendly and helpful staff
We had a great stay at the Francis, the building is very unique with tons of character and charm. Our room was spacious and comfortable and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Its a solid 25 min walk to the old port so we'd walk down and then found it easier to uber back. This was our first stay in a 'boutique' hotel like this and it was a great experience. I'd highly recommend.
Unique, quaint.
This property is gorgeous and has so much character. The amenities are first class. The checkin was efficient and welcoming — Shane was super helpful. Well-located.
Can’t get in to hotel
Wonderful. Room was beautiful. Very cool vibe. Staff could not be friendlier.
Unique Space, Great Service
Great service, everyone was kind and helpful. It was a unique room. The building is old so we heard a lot of creaking above us from people walking. We were also near a busy street so a lot of traffic noise. But the bed was comfortable. There were lots of games and a sitting area outside our room. The restaurant next door was delicious. Would definitely stay again.
Fabulous. The place is charming but the staff made it an outstanding stay. Thoughtful, gracious, knowledgeable and charming.
Parking was not the greatest. Nice and quiet, comfortable and convenient to walk around.
Nice hotel
Very nice hotel but quite a walk into town fantastic bakery opposite for baked goods for breakfast.
Cute!
So cozy and one of our favorite hotels!!
Francis hotel is worth it.
Francis was exactly what I wanted for my trip to Portland. A welcoming staff that were helpful the entire time, a location in the heart of the city, and a great room with wonderful amenities.
Very cool old hotel. Clean, comfortable, wonderful staff
A lovely hotel in a great area.
Beautiful old building. Spacious modern room. Quaint. Close to downtown
Love the building and the interior! The staff is great. We were dissatisfied with the floor being sticky and all of the shades on the windows need to be replaced or repaired.
Great location for walking around Portland. And the hotel staff were very pleasant/helpful
Spacious room, old historical building full of charm and personality. If you're not expecting bland, run of the mill Hilton, you'll love it. Staff was super attentive and helpful. Would stay again if we're back in Portland.
Lovely hotel in an old Victorian. The rooms were well appointed and cozy. We would definitely stay there again.
Phenomenal staff that ensured the best experience for my wife and I!
Clean, quiet and comfortable. Very reasonable rate. Room was a bit small, but fine for a short stay. Many dining options in the neighborhood.
Loved everything about it. Such a nice welcome when we arrived too!
Very cozy and warm property. We enjoyed our stay very much
Good bones and nice people. Could use some staging to make it easier to use.
A Respite in Portland
This is a lovely hotel located just outside the busiest part of downtown. That makes it easy to walk to the action (restaurants, the Old Port, the Portland Museum of Art), and have a respite from it. The room was spacious and clean. The bed was comfortable and there was great light during the day. Everything was quite comfortable. The service was gracious and professional. While we didn't have time to visit the bar or the spa, our local friends tell us that they are both great. They are on the list for our next visit. There is no breakfast in the hotel, though there are two specialty coffee shops within a block and a breakfast joint about two blocks away.
The employees went above and beyond to comfort guests. The chief really is amazing and it was neat to see him throughout the evening and night hard at work preparing for breakfast the next day. The area of the inn was convient and an easy walk to a lovely town full of things to do and eat.
A lovely small hotel - very good service and well appointed
Best staff
Amazing stay. Shane at the front desk was terrific - super kind and helpful. Love the old charm. Ur comfortable and warm
Shane welcomed us so warmly and well I already knew it was going to be a great experience. We loved our room, loved the breakfast we received in the morning. I would highly recommend the Francis and will be back!
Beautiful boutique hotel! Super clean and comfortable. Tastefully decorated. Lovely sitting areas. Fantastic. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Very pet friendly.
We had a great time. Very nice to my dog. He had his own dog bed and dog treats on arrival.
Portland get away
It was a great experience overall! Such great service and the accommodation was wonderful. We will definitely be back!
The Francis is a fantastic hotel. The staff was incredibly kind, helpful, and communicative. The rooms are beautiful, clean, and quiet even though the road outside is busy. When we arrived, they offered champagne to my partner and me, and checking in and out was a breeze. It's such a great location, and Tadem being just across the street is a bonus! I would recommend staying here to any of my friends or family and hope to stay again!
A perfect getaway
This was the perfect spot for a couples getaway. The Francis House combines the charm of a historical building with modern appointments. Rooms are lovely, beds very comfortable and surprisingly quiet for being on Congress Street. The connected Wayside Tavern is highly rated and the food and drinks were excellent.
Fabulous staff and accommodations.
Always awesome. Great boutique hotel.
Unique property in the arts district. There are many hotel choices in the area; this is one for adventurous people who like old buildings and accommodations that are different from cookie cutter hotel chains. My large second floor room had 12 foot ceilings, a bathroom with sink and toilet (both high-end fixtures) and a second shower room, quite large, with a walk-in shower stall. In spite of the building's age it had an elevator. There is a very good restaurant in the same building but with a separate entrance.
Historical building weirdly broken into rooms.
Outside of being across the street for Tandem Coffee the location was not convenient for the sites of Portland. The room safes did not work and the front desk staff could not figure out how to fix and they didn't seem at all concerned about this issue. The room was very overpriced for what it was. I would not recommend this property to others.
Fantastic hotel with a great aesthetic
The Francis is a fantastic hotel, the room was clean and large, with a good size wet room and a very comfortable bed. The staff were friendly and helpful.
My room was clean… but missing a full length mirror. There are minimal rugs so overhead noise is an issue. The staff is terrific…we loved Portland!
We received a friendly greeting from reception. Our room was great, with a comfortable bed. Parking was easy. We only stayed one night, but we managed to enjoy Portland - the Victoria Mansion was particularly fascinating.
Love the room. not a fan of the new One Key rewards with hotels.com
What a nice place! Definitely a place to consider especially if you are looking for something different than your standard hotel room.
Francis Hotel Is Great
Unexpected lovely historic hotel. Beautiful architecture. Very comfortable bed. Really enjoyed our stay. The restaurant attached to the hotel was excellent. Highly recommend.
Wonderful, helpful staff and charming details that gave the hotel a lot of character. The construction across the street made for a noisy stay, but look forward to another stay once this construction is complete.
They put us in the basement room - small window. Ok for a 6th grade sleepover but not for $375
Highly recommend. Thoughtful hospitality!
Charming hotel with kind, helpful staff. Good mix of modern and vintage. Loved our room. Great shower. Great bath products. Local items in mini bar. Lovely all around!
The Francis was great however our room was on the corner facing construction across the street and it was very loud. Our shower was also a bit slippery and my wife fell trying to get into it.
We had a nice stay at The Francis. There was construction going on across the street so it was a little noisy in the front of the building in the morning but everything else was great. Great location on Congress St.
Great boutique hotel with a high-end feel for a reasonable price. Tasteful, clean, charming, large room for a standard with a king bed and nice desk, high ceilings, large bay windows, tons of light, could use an upgrade on the robes. Great neighborhood. Close to a fire station but we weren’t bothered. Thoroughly enjoyed our short stay.
We stayed here while visiting Portland for a graduation. Loved the Francis and look forward to returning. Small business, such polite staff, spotless, great walkable location, wonderful small touches.
It is a lovely hotel with great staff in a perfect location. You can walk everywhere. Very nice restaurants near by. It is very relaxing.
The locks on the doors wouldn't work and they couldn't fix them and the HVAC unit leaked over our bed.
Beautiful interior building in public spaces, as well as great curb appeal, however our king size bed room was sparce. No table in room other than small round bedside table, or any other shelving for toiletries or to sit and write. Staff courteous and friendly.
Great hotel in a great corner of Portland
Spacious rooms in an historic home located in a part of Portland with a great vibe and a number of well-regarded cocktail bars and restaurants. The staff could not have been more accommodating with pre-trip planning and recommendations. In fact, they connected with me via text so that they could be available throughout our stay if we needed anything at any hour. Would definitely come back
Maine road trip
Just a few minutes walk to downtown. They gave us lots of restaurant recommendations. I would recommend staying here for a couples retreat.
After reading the reviews i decided to take a chance, I wish i had not. The staff were very nice but didnt provide a map of the overall area & no relevant recommendations of the area. Other hotels we stayed at in Maine did this which was very helpful for an outsider. They said its in walking distance to downtown. Sure 1.5 miles isnt difficult but its the dodgey neighborhoods we would be walking through at night. No tks We paid 25 bucks for the breakfast in bed...coffee was warm not hot, no sugar, stirrers, napkins, not even a tray to put food on. This hotel acts like its a fancy hotel and its just not making the mark. Shower tile needed repair, wood rot on the windows. There are a few good places to eat in walking distance. For the price i recommend looking for something closer to downtown.
overpriced, not as advertised, dirty
housekeeping is not good - room is extremely sparse and not well lit - maintenance is lacking - do not recommend…
Great small hotel
The property is really cool. My room was beautiful! Everyone was super nice and helpful. Location is really convenient and right off 295. Walking distant to nice restaurants and town.
OUR STAY WAS AMAZING!!!
Our stay was AMAZING!!! Everything was incredible - the room, the service, the communication with the front desk, the location - we LOVED IT!!!
If you prefer a personal experience than the hotel chains, The Francis is a perfect spot. The room is cozy - what I would call European cozy - but everything has its place and the room is well appointed. The bed was really comfortable too. We went to Portland for my husband’s hip replacement and the room was safe for him after his surgery. Most of our communication was via SMS and they are very responsive in a timely manner. They were helpful at every moment of our stay. If we return to Portland, we are definitely returning to The Francis.
Beautifully restored property. Located directly across the road from the best bakery in Portland. Within walking distance of downtown and the waterfront.
The place was beautiful The room was immaculate The staff went over and above
Fine hotel but rooms were very noisy.
Most helpful staff ever
On the edge of the Arts District. Extremely well maintained boutique hotel. Most friendly and helpful staff I have ever encountered. Good restaurants are walking distance, Old Port is about 1 mile away.
Loved this hotel. Felt very welcomed, especially our dog. Great beds.
It’s fantastic
Beautiful hotel with charm and interest. Location was also fantastic.
Great little boutique hotel, great location across from Tandem, however, due to the Covid restrictions and changes, it felt like many of the amenities were no longer available - no restaurant, no free coffee or water, no spa. The staff were amazing, but seemed a little overwhelmed/understaffed. We are vaccinated, so felt safe and happy with the restrictions, it's just that it didn't feel like as good value, due to the services and amenities that were lacking. We could have stayed elsewhere (at an airbnb, for example) for better value.
We got a basement room with no windows and didn’t get any warning. Not nice
The Francis was a charming boutique hotel within walking distance of some popular Portland spots. We loved having the ability to walk to restaurants for breakfast and dinner. The staff was very kind and courteous throughout our stay and we loved how they greeted us with a handwritten note waiting in our room. We will definitely recommend the Francis to friends and family and stay again if we find our way back to Portland.
Cute and cozy Inn, modern and updated, great location.
We absolutely loved our stay at The Francis. Kevin greeted us promptly, despite us running way behind schedule. He was friendly, helpful, and hospitable. The Francis hotel is quaint, unique and spotless. The rooms are minimal and modern, with very comfortable mattresses and cozy bedding. The robes were the cherry on top. We will be back!!!
Gorgeous room, excellent hot shower! Bathrobes are soft and warm too
Great Stay, highly recommend.
Amazing little weekend at the Francis! I will absolutely be staying here again when I return to Portland. It was very cozy for a holiday get away.
Our stay at the francis was great. Our room was clean and surprisingly quiet for the location at night and in the early mornings. The location is great. So many delicious restaurants near by. Our favorite was actually the noodle place less than a half mile away. A must try!
Great place
Location was excellent and room was delightful. Had such a nice time
The bed was beyond comfortable. The soap and shampoo were top of the line.

Don’t believe what you read
We were disappointed that what was advertised as “breakfast included” turned out to be a 30% off voucher for a neighborhood cafe. It is a shame to find a business that does not represent themselves honestly and does not respect their customers.
