One to avoid
Said they hadn’t received the notification of my booking so had to prove it with the confirmation email. A really unfriendly welcome. Having been emailed after I had booked to say to bring my own wine to the restaurant (they had no alcohol licence), they then tried to make me pay it and denied that I had been told there was no alcohol being served so I had to show him the email the hotel had sent to make myself believed, point out the large sign by the bar that said to BYO and the fact that the waitress had provided glasses. Made to feel like I was a liar and an inconvenience (even though I was the only one there!). A really uncomfortable experience. However the room itself was lovely, the food on the one occasion I ate there was great and with a little light, heating, atmosphere and music, it could have been lovely so maybe my experience was down to one individual. Had they behaved differently this could have been a very positive review.
Arrived at 4.30pm to check in on pre booked room and told that there wouldnt be anyone there until 8pm. So i ended up leaving this is ridiculous especially when they know someone is arriving,

Have stayed at the fox a few times over the years it in a great position at junction 5 of the M40 The room i stayed in had been refufurbished and restaurant had recently been refurshished I would recommend the hotel maybe as a stop before getting into London
Good location just off M40
Booked last minute as location close to Lapland UK prior to visit, after traveling from the north of England.
We stopped here as it is very convenient to the M40. We loved the charm of the building and the decor of the room we had was tasteful and beautiful ( Stag). Our ground floor room had a lovely open outlook over fields. Large bathroom. We had dinner in the restaurant which we really enjoyed although the hotel was very quiet. The owner could not have been more attentive. Lovely stay and good value for money.
Very friendly staff and very welcoming.
Awful Experience
No food available or drinks Had to drive miles to get food Nothing mentioned in the details that there was no food available
The property was empty then I arrived with all doors locked. Had to book elsewhere at more expense
Great overnight
Cancelled on afternoon of booking
Need to improve fast
Recently changed hands and the new owners are not up and running fully yet. Room is nice but the bar was closed as no licence yet and no one around in the morning to sort breakfast that I was told was 8.30. The place had all the lights out and was deserted and clearly not going to be doing my breakfast. I left hungry.
BE WARNED: DO NOT STAY HERE
I had an extremely disappointing and unsafe experience at The Chilterns Fox. With no dinner available at the hotel, I went out to eat elsewhere, only to return and find all the doors locked, the lights off, and no staff present. There was no contact number provided, leaving me stranded and unsure of what to do. I even had to call the police for advice. Desperate for help, I approached a neighbor, who informed me this has been a recurring issue for weeks. Guests have been locked out with no way to re-enter. The lack of customer service and basic safety measures is shocking. As a young woman traveling alone, I felt especially vulnerable. When I finally managed to speak to the owner, their response was dismissive and uncaring. It was simply too scary to stay another night, so I left the next day and booked into an alternative hotel for the rest of the week. This hotel offers no dinner, no bar, no breakfast, and absolutely no sense of security. I cannot recommend it to anyone.
On arrival it was a poor check in experience a table in the bar that can’t sell alcohol as it has no licence. No information as to breakfast times etc. So didn’t have it. Room was very nice but cold had to ask for heating to be put on in hotel. Went out for a meal got back at 830 from door locked. Had to bang on window to get attention. Staff have no clue how to do service. I also kept getting messages saying my room had been cancelled which it hadn’t.
Seemed very much unloved Booked a double room, and was escorted to a single. Room was extremely cold! Was it cheap for the area, yes. But would I stay here again, no.
Unfortunately for some reason the new proprietor was waiting for the alcohol license to be completed. So bar was closed, something that Expedia should have mentioned as part of the booking.
A great hotel and a great nights sleep
A very helpful team for my late arrival. Everything was out in place and room access was straightforward. The room had a comfortable bed, a great TV, fridge and a good shower in the bathroom. The hotel was quiet at night which led to a great night’s sleep. Thank you The Chiltens Fox. I’ll be back.
Watch the tv series faulty towers, then you'll know what to expect. Pub has so much potential but.....
Oh dear.
New owner is struggling to get staff and run the place. As a result the service is nothing short of awful. Only one beer on the bar, no staff so VERY poor breakfast service - 40 minutes and we were the only customers. No tea/coffee as “bar staff haven’t turned up”. Chef (young guy on his phone all the time) apparently could not make tea, the kettle was missing from our room even though we asked for one to be found, so not a great start to the day. The hotel/pub is NOT ready for any guests so in my opinion should cancel all bookings until such time they have the basics right of any hospitality business. Go elsewhere until they can offer any level of acceptable service.
Hidden little gem
Booked this hotel last minute as a stop over on the way to London and glad we did. The room was exceptionally clean and tidy as well as being well decorated and comfy. Quaint little bar and restaurant is attached, we didn't eat but did enjoy a drink in the courtyard style patio. We were given a ground floor room (named wisteria) that was a great size with a huge bathroom, the room had a smart TV and some very welcome air-conditioning during a heatwave. Would definitely stay again and even considering stopping on our way home.
Terrible stay a complete waste of time
Well the reviews said good our review is terrible, They gave our room to someone else apparently Our new room the key wouldn't work so we couldn't get in but the cleaner did to clean the room but how you ask? The only room they had was an upgrade but someone had been asleep on it and been throwing their fags outside the door, the garden was overgrown and there was garden rubbish everywhere. They simply didn't care if we were happy or not and other customers were leaving too. Never ever would we have stayed there so we left to find somewhere more suitable Dreadful service apart from the poor girl on reception who had no support the foreign manager
Shocking communication
Paid for breakfast .. never got it.. pub did not open.. phoned and emailed multiple times for a refund for my breakfast but have been ignored
Very disapointing
Waited over two hours outside. No body around at the property. No answer on the phone. Had to get another hotel sorted for the night.
Great stay
Great room, clean and spacious with a touch of luxury
Shambles.
Where do I start? Firstly turn up to a hotel In The middle of nowhere to a sign on the door they aren’t serving food.. Secondly, I was getting a room with a Balcony but didn’t because there was an issue with the lock. Thirdly the TV is something out of the Stone Age Fourthly, there was what appeared to be a spiders nest in the toilet, every time it was left for a while you’d open it and have loads of little spiders. Was given the smallest roll of toilet roll with no spares, couldn’t find anyone to ask for more. Can we normalise better TV’s in hotels?
Great breakfast
Great little spot, just what you need, comfy bed, good shower and cracking breakfast!!
I always enjoy a business overnight stay just a shame some nights the pub is not serving food
Great overnight
Great overnight stay
Great place to stay in the summer, with a great beer garden to enjoy a drink in the evening, and great rooms for the price!
Good pub inn with clean rooms and friendly staff, great for business stay, shame it’s not open on Monday or Tuesday
Very clean and tidy and great value for money and fantastic staff.
Great spot for a country stay
Very welcoming helpful staff. Perfect spot and great food.
Arrived relatively late (about an hour after my dinner booking at the time of last food orders) but was welcomed and well looked after by Tim and the team, not rushed at all, and fed and watered and entertained! Very lovely relaxed evening, great breakfast. Good food, comfortable and unpretentious. Hugely preferable to an airport hotel if you are on your way to Heathrow the next day, as I was - 30-40 minutes drive depending on traffic. But would definitely come and stay again regardless.
Manager was very helpful with instructions as I arrived late.. It’s to be noted the pub doesn’t serve food Mondays & Tuesday..
Pleasant but very average and needs improvements
The hotel looks very appealing from the outside and in a lovely location. We were happy with our first impression. As we checked in, we were welcomed with a heavy smoke in the bar area which we blamed on where they may have just lit the fire but this lasted all evening unfortunately. The food at dinner was outstanding, so tasty and the staff were very friendly & attentive. Our room was extremely hot and we tried to turn the radiator down but we were only able to turn it down slightly so had to sleep with the windows wide open all night. The room was pleasant and tidy. The bathroom was average and I think could benefit from a little TLC in areas due to slight rust in places and built up limescale on the shower head and shower doors. Due to this built up limescale and half the door hanging off its hinge, you weren’t able to close the shower door. Breakfast was delicious, coffee was lovely but the smoke made it unpleasant again as the whole bar area was full of smoke, we’ve come home and stink of smoke unfortunately. Even with the best efforts of opening the windows, it was still an issue. I think the bar area & restaurant would benefit with some music or some sort of background noise as it was very quiet and awkward. Overall a nice pleasant stay, very average but definitely needs some improvement.
Nicr hotel
Nice hotel with great food.
WOW, WOW, WOW!!
I was given a ground floor room. Was amazed when I stepped into the bedroom. It had a desk, 2 bottles of water, one still and one sparkling. It boasted a really comfy lounge chair and a bed that was so comfortable that I didn't want to get out of it! The bathroom was large with in one corner a freestanding bath with a shower attachment. In the centre of the bathroom was a double sink and in the other corner a fabulous walk-in shower. It had a rainforest shower head and a separate shower attachment. Everywhere in the hotel was very clean. Customer service was brilliant and the staff couldn't do enough for their guests. I stay in a lot of hotels and if this was in the city centre, it would be at least double the price! I can't rate this hotel highly enough and genuinely would recommend it to everyone and anyone 5*
Beautiful little stay, lovely staff
Absolutely lovely stay at the chiltern fox! Our babysitter cancelled on us last minute and we had a night away for our anniversary with wine tasting so had to cancel the wine tasting and added our 4 month old to our stay at the chiltern fox and they were so accommodating to us for our little boy! they upgraded our room for us as we informed them our situation which was so kind! the room was beautiful and the service and food was fantastic, we felt really looked after! It’s a beautiful little stay, out of the way which is nice. We’re looking forward to rebooking again when we redo our wine tasting!
Very happy
Broken promises
We arrived at 4pm on a Sunday, we asked if we could book a table for evening meal & was told the kitchen closes in one hr, we decided to eat straight away even though we had only eaten our lunch 2 hrs before, the meal was very good. I asked what time we could have breakfast tomorrow, they said the chief was off, I pushed them and they agreed to get someone to come in to prepare. When we went down the next day for breakfast, there was a note at the bottom of the stairs saying, sorry no staff, no breakfast!!!
Good place good location.
Always a place I stay if I am in that area.
Great place albeit rather isolated.
Forget premier lodges…….. check this place out
Great find Near to m25 but really quiet but quick to get back on the road Brilliant to find somewhere that does a small FRESH cooked menu ! Definitely my go to place for when I need to stay in the area Fab staff - thanks all and see you again
Staff were extremely helpful. Great stay and would recommend.
The hotel was very clean and tidy .
Nice place but unfortunately I probably stayed on the wrong night. I arrived fairly late at 7ish to check in to my room, I was then told by the only person working there that they had a problem in the kitchen and were not serving food. It was obvious that they were short staffed and didn't have a chef, so I had to go out again and find somewhere to eat 20 mins away. I don't think it would have too hard to let customer know beforehand. Other than that it is a nice place to stay.
Disappointed
The double socket on the wall wasn’t fitted properly. Plus there is a 12.5% service charge when you order your food, I personally don’t agree with a service charge. The price you see is the price you should pay, plus didn’t get the view I was supposed to get. All in all I was very disappointed with this place.
A great place to stay
A fantastic place to stay in the countryside. Beer was very nice, food was great and the staff couldn't be more accommodating. Very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. A perfect base for walking and travelling the countryside
Friendly efficient staff, excellent breakfast:)

No wifi, TV, breakfast or reception.
Beware - there is no wifi! This is not obvious in the advertising. No TV channels - the smart TV needed wifi. There is no reception so arrivals and departures are haphazard. No breakfast available (by 0800 when I left). I was locked out of the main building in the morning so had to leave my key in the room and go without 'checking out'. Before arrival, I received a message to say there is no alcohol licence. The owner denied this and stated that this was not instigated by him and that alcohol was indeed available. Dinner was in an empty, dining room. The menu and service didn't inspire confidence so I ended up eating elsewhere. Renovations are ongoing. Paper on the floor in the bar etc. It is a shame as the room was nicely presented and the bed was comfortable. Too many problems to call it a 'hotel' I would use again or recommend to others.
