This hotel is not what it used to be. One of the rooms was not available at 6:30 pm and was given a lower price room with out any monies back. The other room was small and not what I expected. I've stayed at this hotel before, but I will not return.

Nice people (staff) and nice hotel. Friendly design, classic with comfortable beds, good water pressure and efficient climate - control. Ocean views are nice and with great 180 degrees perspective. Excellent Barber Saloon at the lobby level with very professional staff (especially RASHAN). Reception people are helpful, pleasant, and accommodating. Best regards to Manju, who warmly and professionally welcomed me to the hotel upon my check-in.

Our stay at TAJ was excellent with great welcome and customer service byMiss Dilshani giving us all more then expected. Aslo Rooms were well serviced and given services required by staff Miss Ranjani and the Manager. Restaurant staff where great with services. Looking forward to come back and enjoy more at other TAJ HOTELS when given this kind of services.

All good except food A la carte and cafe not comparable to other Colombo hotels in food choice value for money and quality

We stayed for two nights. ALL of the staff are BRILLIANT and looked after us really well. The room was spacious and the rain-shower incredible… probably the best I’ve had. The on-site Indian restaurant was excellent as was breakfast. Easy to walk around the area and just 5 minutes to Park Street for loads of good dining options. Wholeheartedly recommend Taj Samudra. Thank you.

Hotel is showing its age and really needs an overhaul. Tried repeatedly to get a invoice after I left the property without success

The bed and pillows are very uncomfortable, breakfast was excellent specially for south Asians, but there is short of space due to lots of guests, they should modify the restaurant because I feel the arrangement is not proper

Taj Samundra was a decent experience for us, though the rooms are old-school and you can see wood worn off in some places, the grandeur of the property over shadows everything. The buffet spread was great but service a bit chaotic. We do want to mention a shout out to Joseph at the gym, Bhatia for room service, Ms Dinushah at check-in and Ms Tathsarani at check-out. I do have to mention the rates we booked at were inclusive of all taxes as mentioned by expedia at the time of booking but when we got the property, it was easily 35 USD more per night including tax. Expedia needs to be clear about this so we can choose the best price for us.

Outstanding breakfast

Not sure how this hotel is so highly rated on trip advisor. Room wasn't ready when I arrived. Communal/lobby areas are very nice but rooms are looking tired. Number of occasions where my room was cleaned but not topped up with amenities, such as bottled water. Service is very poor, there are loads of staff but no one seems to help. Difficult to get any kind of drinks with dinner other than water. Lobby bar was out of stock of basically everything. Wi-Fi throughout the hotel is really slow (2mb max speed). Food in the buffet is good but same dishes are served each night. Had some laundry done and all my clothes were shrunk - tried to explain it to staff but they either did not understand/pretended they did not understand.

when walking to our room we can smell smoking, when asked we were told that room with balcony is a smoking room, But we can see someone sitting inside the room and smoking, also one gentleman smoking on the corridor. Bath tub is moldy. We paid for room with ocean facing but we were given a room where there is a building blocking the view, There are not chest of drawers in the room. We liked the breakfast and dinner buffet very much. Staff is very nice

this was our second stay at this hotel & just before we were to check in some friends told us about the horrible room experience they had & how we should change our hotel. since our first visit was great I wasn't sure if this feedback was good for the entire hotel or just an unfortunate experience they had so I decided to call the hotel & speak to them & share my concerns. the lady at the customer service desk heard me out & reassured me that there was no cause for concern & told me someone would call me back during regular office hours the next day to clarify any doubts. this did not happen so negative feedback on this. however, I sent them an email listing out all the rooms that were part of the group & soon enough I got a reply reassuring me of the impeccable taj service as always. upon check in they had upgraded all our rooms to the next category & they specifically assured us that we would go back carrying forward the same experience as we did the first time & that is exactly what happened. super stay & full marks to the Taj Colombo team, especially Niluka who made our stay superb.

Taj - as always, never disappoints.

I’ve stayed in many Taj properties over the years and there’s a reason I keep coming back. The team at Taj Samudra were always attentive and on point during my stay. No matter the late arrival hour (past midnight), or looking for a restaurant, they were always ready to assist. The property is starting to show its age, but this is beyond staff control. I’d encourage the owners to spend a little to spruce up the property a little especially as it has such a beautiful frontage to the sea! Thank you, Taj Samudra team, for a wonderful experience.

Run down hotel, horrible customer service

Ocean view Deluxe room on top floor smells musty, bugs flying in the room. Bathroom and toilet have glass door so there is no privacy if two people are traveling together. We asked our room to be changed, manager tried his best to delay changing the room, made us wait 4 hours. Eventually we were changed to a city view Jr suite room, which fixed some of the above mentioned issues. Even this room is run down, bathroom door is crooked & barely closes, mini bar is not stocked, no after hour coffee in the business center, strong smoke smell is the hallway when we booked non-smoking room. Being an Indian American, I wanted this hotel to be good (since it's an Indian luxury hotel chain). Sadly It's an overpriced, run down hotel and no attention is being paid to hotel maintenance and customer comfort. I wouldn't recommend this hotel at this price point.

Excellent short break with my wife . As a regular to Taj properties in India , there is a standard of quality of service and property which is maintained across properties how ever old that property may be . Loved their Japanese restaurant and Navarathna was serving excellent Indian food . Overall very satisfying . 👍

Taj Samudra had incredible hospitality and really elevated rooms. The fact they have reusable bottle program shows that they care for the environment and want to be sustainable. Also it’s right across the water, so you can do a quick walk by the sea any time. The buffet food was good, not exceptional especially the vegetarian options were mediocre at best. Although the stand alone restaurant Navratna had smashing food.

Great place to stay

Stay at the hotel was comfortable, clean, and carefree. The staff service was great, the food options were amazing. For someone looking to understand how far the oceanfront rooms were from the ocean, please know that there were other buildings and a road in front; the pictures on the hotel website are taken from a different angle.

Taj samudra review

usually taj hotels "wow" us. but probably due to srilanka's economic condition, taj decided not to keep the hotel immaculate. Plus, there were kids running around in the club lounge, screaming, every evening. I know that in other hotels as well as taj properties, kids have an age restrictions. Here, even maids for the kids were present as well.

Amazing sea view of you stay in an odd number room. You can cross the road to do a walk on the galle face. Good food. The rooms are plush.

It was a great hotel and good service

An oasis of calm The food is delectable and the service levels are the benchmark other hotels in the city mark themselves by.

The hotel looks opulent on the ground floor. The pool, gym and breakfast are top notch. The food in the Indian restaurant was bland and the room was a bit dirty on check-in, especially the bathroom floor. Rooms are a bit shabby but come with plenty of free water.

Elegant, great location

Elegant architecture, wonderful breakfast buffet, clean, and very good service. I also felt very safe, there were staff members everywhere checking in and making sure all my needs were met. The only downside is that to get to the pool / gym / steam room, you have to go through the gorgeous lobby that is usually filled with well dressed people there for some fancy event... so it's rather uncomfortable to walk through in a robe or cover-up... there should be some sort of keyed entrance straight from the rooms.

Lovely hotel, friendly staff but service can be a little slow at times. The breakfast buffet is a little limited and could do with being more varied to cater for all dietary needs.

Comfortable and friendly

I enjoyed my stay. The hotel is comfortable and the rooms are good size. But the rooms need updating. The Navratna, Golden Dragon and Yumi restaurants serve good Indian, Chinese and Japanese food respectively. The staff are very friendly and helpful.

Almost perfect.

Great location with beautiful unobstructed views of the Gallface Greens and the Indian Ocean. Staff were friendly, but not all were welcoming or attentive. Was not very impressed by the food either. Well-kept lawn and grounds. Beautiful lobby. Beautiful, clean and impressive room (luxury sea view room). Impressive bathroom, but hot water was not hot around 9-10 pm both in the shower and also in the tub. Loved the pool area, though could not test it. Can recommend to others.

Excellent hotel with great staff and nice pool and great breakfast service. Club lounge has great staff.

Beautifully comfortable hotel. We had club access and were able to sit in one of the glass enclosed dining nooks and it was dreamy. Our room was comfortable and well equipped. Pool was great for laps. Note, they do not have a Sauna, we were told But that was ok as everything else perfect.

Loved the Taj!

We had a great stay at this hotel. We were upgraded to Executive Level and the room was amazing. Great decor and view and an amazing bathtub. We loved the lobby for cappuccinos in the morning, too!

Poor service bad staff

We just used the facility to stay one night. It was average.

Some rooms are very dated. We had to change the first one we got as that was not acceptable for a 5 star property and definitely not expected from a Taj property.

Our room was comfortable and had a great view of the sea . Staff were all helpful and courteous . The only unsatisfactory experience was the smell of sewage at times in the bathroom ! As we were there only for a short time , we didn’t want to make a fuss and change our room ( no 621) but the Maintenance dept in the hotel may want to sort it out for future guests .

New Years Stay

Taj Samudra feels like an extension of home in Sri Lanka as Taj is a chain we are all used to ! It was all decked up for Christmas and New Years and felt very joyous & festive ! The General Manager himself makes rounds of the lobby and connects with the guests to add an extra special touch ! Everyone is really helpful ! The newly refurbished rooms on the 4th floor were very spacious and comfortable ! All in all a very pleasant stay and value for money!

One night at the Taj

Beautiful hotel. I only stayed one night so I did not use the facilities - pool, fitness room, etc. My room was comfortable. The shower was in the bathtub, which I generally don’t like but the rain shower head and the glass doors made up for it. You just have to be careful getting in and out. The restaurant serves mostly Asian food. I ordered a lobster roll which is a specialty borrowed from the Boston Taj. It was more bread than lobster. Breakfast, which also consisted mostly of Asian dishes, had enough western food for a good western breakfast. Chris at the concierge desk was especially helpful to me. He secured a car and driver for my trip through Sri Lanka, advised me on my itinerary, and recommended hotels for my journey. I would definitely stay at the Colombo Taj on a return visit.

The pool was lovely, all the staff were excellent. 5 star service.

We needed to check in early due to our flight arriving into Colombo and they were very accommodating and were able to give us a room. The Taj is in a great position just opposite the beach were you can walk along the foreshore at night and look at all the food sellers. Highly recommend.

Best in Hospitality

This place rocks! Definitely the best! From the moment we entered we were greeted with smiles and the best customer service was given to us! Our special day was made more special by Duncan, Bernie, Jayamini, Geeth, and Sakuni. Thank you to you all! The room was clean and beautiful and the beds and pillows were very comfortable as well! The view was the icing on the cake! Will visit Taj again and definitely recommend this place!

The BEST thing about this hotel is its staff. From security, bell boy, front desk to housekeeping. Pretty much everyone was amazing. They genuinely care for their guests. I stayed there for 2 nights (October 23rd and 24th - 2019). During check in they upgraded my room to a Suite. (I didnt ask for it) Then the Front Desk officer and the bell boy accompanied me to my Suite and showed all the amenities. Next day morning it was raining heavily. I had a lot of places to visit and people to see. I had only my dress shoes with me. I ddint want to ruin my shoes. I tried to buy a pair of sandals/slippers from the shops in the lobby. They were not open at that time. I had to leave early. I called the concierge. They arranged a pair of sandals for me withing 10 minutes. There are so many dining options within the hotel. Room was wonderful

Value for Money...

The hotel is in a near very upscale market and all the luxury hotels are around . Beach is across the road. The service is a bit slow but very good. Morning spread of Buffet is very nice also the choices of restaurant is good for all kind of travellers. Overall very good experience and also good value for money.

Beautiful property beside the Indian Ocean. Staff couldn't have been more helpful or pleasant!

The service was poor throughout our stay with my wife and son - most members of staff don’t acknowledge us despite going through the main lobby several times. The atmosphere feels cold and lacks any soul. The duty manager on the day we checked in (27th August) was excellent and took the time to learn our names/room number and showed us some of the facilities - this is the type of service you’d expect from this type of establishment. Breakfast at Ports of Call was shambles, we’d be directed to a table by Nilanka, we wouldn’t be offered a child seat despite being with a 1 year old and getting a tea/coffee felt like we were asking a staff member for a kidney (Nilanka did redeem himself by offering our son lunch). The Sri Lankan food items were cold but spread was good. Eggs and pancakes were tasty. Staff were prompt however when asking to sign for the bill. We ended up having breakfast at a hotel nearby by the end of our stay despite this being included with our room rate. We had an ocean facing club room on 7th floor but you can’t help but notice the windows were filthy. The club room was nice, few snacks on offer and alcoholic beverages between 6:30pm and 8pm - however you will still be asked to sign an invoice for drinks you may not have consumed (but assured these are complimentary). The location of the hotel is great and the rooms + lobby are good. It’s the staff and poor management which lets it down.

Ocean views, well maintained with excellent staff. Buffet breakfast had an extensive spread with South Indian/ Sri Lankan items made to order. Mr Dayalan (chef) was amazing and his creations delectable. It was a fantastic stay and I will be back!

The Taj Sumadra was the quintessential 5 star experience. The attention to detail in terms of service especially our room attendant Sunil, the amenities which included an excellent gym and pool, the location and food made it possibly our best hotel stay ever. The check and check out staff made the whole stay extremely special and will be an experience our family will never forget. Thank you Taj!!!

The service I received at the Taj was unprecedented. All of the staff were amazingly friendly and super helpful with anything I needed, I felt right at home and it made my week-long stay for work very comfortable and almost like a vacation. From the woman working at the breakfast juice bar, to the staff who serviced my room or brought the paper each morning, to the very responsive and helpful people at the front desks, everyone was warm and welcoming. This was by far one of the best hotel stays I have had ever, anywhere in the world. The hotel itself is lovely. My room had an exceptional view of Galle Face, and I could watch the sunset each night. The amenities were also fantastic; beautiful pool, best-equipped hotel gym I have encountered, great breakfast buffet and restaurant, and nice gardens all around. Absolutely can't wait to come back to Colombo and stay here again! Don't hesitate to book at the Taj Samudra--it's the best!!!

Excellent hotel

I was given a room upgrade (without asking for it!). So that was a pleasant surprise. The staff were great and the location was excellent.

We were 4 people staying for 3 nights.. the device was excellent. All the staff members were very cooperative and friendly.

The property is located in the prime area and connected well across the city. The rooms are spacious and have all amenities. the staff is very courteous and helpful.

Charged for early checkin - taken advantage.

Dear Duty Manager - I was a little upset when you charge us for earlier checkin. But you do not refund us for early checkout? I checked out almost 14 - 16 hours ahead of my scheduled time. In spite of that the duty manager did not agree to my request and charged me 25% extra for early checkin. Needless to say - the management took advantage of my situation. International flights do not land depending upon your check in check out times. Some flexibility by the hotel goes a long way in customers coming back to same property and showing loyalty. With so many options in Colombo do you think I will come back to your hotel? Do not just give a standard reaposne. Please review this booking closely and advise what could have been done better by the hotel?

The overall service of staff including concierge, reception, housekeeping and in restaurants were exceptional. To maintain this level of friendliness and professionalism say a lot about the Hotel’s attitude towards guests in ensuring our stay is more than comfortable but thoroughly enjoyable!

Although the courtesy and hospitality of the staff was good, the food in their buffet restaurant did not live up to the Taj standards. It was cold and substandard. The service was also not up to the mark. However, the food in their Indian restaurant was good and the Chef deserves a compliment.

Everything was great! The breakfast was not the best we had in Sri Lanka but it was good nevertheless.

This is a lovely hotel. The rooms are ample in size, clean and very comfortable. The overall service and amenities are excellent and I would highly recommend this hotel for a visit in Colombo.

Pretty much a perfect stay. Greaf staff, large comfy room, and nice pool for relaxing. The view over the Galle Face Green and ocean are spectacular.

Its quite an old property and rooms needs to be upgraded if it needs to maintain its 5 start standards.
