An old style boutique hotel with personality, historical decor, comfortable bed, good hot water pressure, plus a very nice restaurant downstairs. A drawback of the ‘personality’ is that there’s no elevator and some of the antique furnitures are, well, antique.
Unique Destination
The Tabbard Inn was an interesting and comfortable stay.
Old World Charm
Amazing place. Oldest continuously operating hotel in DC. Wonderful ambiance and charm along with a top notch restaurant and a cozy, welcoming fireplace lounge. It is a European-style boutique hotel with 35 rooms, each of which is different and special in its own way, with an eclectic mix of antiques, artwork, and room colors. There are no televisions in the rooms, no elevators and those who need to do some work on their laptops and don’t want to do so on a coffee table sitting on an antique couch with an extra pillow stuffed behind their backs or on an antique secretary’s desk can use one of the tables in the fireplace lounge or overflow dining rooms. One meets people who have a favorite room and have stayed at the Tabard Inn for 30 or 40 years, or had their wedding reception there, or attended one of the many charitable and special events that are held throughout the year. Since it is majority employee-owned, by people who feel that they are part of a family, they tend to take more care in going about their jobs, and pay attention to the little things that that make their guests smile.
The shower didn't work in the room I was in and water would not turn warm (it was ice cold)
The room was unique and lovely. The bed was extremely comfortable, The staff was excellent. The restaurant and bar were both amazing with excellent food and unique drinks.
Soo historic means terrible lightening, thin walls, stains, broken furniture, the bed was soo hard n painful n creeked. The bathroom had stains in tub..terrible liggtennin n water never got hot. Itt was dim liggtening in room n bathroom. Everything was broken n fallin apart...n just ugly. I swear they have never renovated since 1920. Worst stay of my life. We couldnt even talk at night cus of thin walls, we had a noise warning. Entire room was falling apart, a motel would have been better.
Location
Wonderfully quirky hotel that has excellent food and service!
A really fun experience. Unusual historical hotel, thay was such a welcome bre ak from formulaic sterile chain hhotels. Good restaurant and friendly helpful staff. Would recommend it
Didn't know quaint meant unbearable
Really wanted to like this place, but there was no hot water, the A/C didn't work properly, there was no tv or any amenities really in the room, and we had to climb up 5 flights of windy unsafe stairs to access our room. Maybe this is good for folks just graduating the hostel phase of their travel journey, but experienced travelers beware!
If you like historical properties with character, you can’t do better in DC. Charming place. Roaring fireplace. Tasty restaurant. Employee-owned. Art all around. I’ll be back
No regrets!
Really loved it here! Beautiful historic property, full of antiques. Tons of storage space. Lovely staff, great food, a quiet and peaceful rest, and quite affordable for the area. I will absolutely stay again on my next visit to DC. Enjoy!
I thought it was a great experience to stay in a historical property. Staff was very friendly and attentive. Room was very clean.
Nice and historic hotel
Great experience
Im a big fan of restored hotels and this one is charming. Not for everyone but me.it is vintage, super clean, no elevator so what, but 3 minutes walkbtovthe Philippines embassy. So charming outside tge cyrb appeal is so romantic.
I need more time to share how I truly feel. But this place is stunning! I stayed in thr penthouse and the room pulse the staff was top notch. It’s like stepping back in time to colonial America. The staff was warm and welcoming and brought my bags up to the top floor. Thank you so much to all the staff. Keep up the great work! Oh and the bar and restaurant is fantastic. Get the burger and fries!
The Tabard inn was loving from the decor to the staff and location. It is historical so remeber you will have to take the stairs so be prepared but other than that every minute there was perfect! Make sure you eat at their restaurant it was so good and live jazz on a monday made for the most lovely break after walking back from the national mall
This is no ordinary Inn. It reminds me of a number of similar establishments in England that are one of a kind. I think the fact the Tabard is majority owned by the employees is a major factor in the exceptional service and ambiance.
Quiet, old but charming; dont expect usual amenities; hard to find outlets for electronics, dark and loaded with antiques;
Beautiful hotel
Amazing as Always
I first learned about Tabard Inn sometime in the late 1980s: it was amazing then and it remains the same today.
Beautiful place. Lovely and cozy
Great charming place in the heart of DC, very different from anything else in the area. Apart from some issues with hot water in some periods of the day, everything else is great. Staff is great!
I absolutely loved the Tabard Inn and hope to stay there again whenever I return to DC. It is charming, cozy, and vibrant. My room was comfortably decorated and felt like a grand old home, and I enjoyed relaxing downstairs by the fireplace and soaking up the atmosphere in the inn's restaurant. Try the fresh cinnamon donuts for breakfast. Highly recommend!
Classic Inn feel. Great cozy bar. Wonderful restaurant.
The Tabard Inn is so lovely and quaint. We love its restaurant, as well as its parlor with a fireplace, service, and location. It is just a few blocks from DuPont Circle that has a wealth of great restaurants and a metro station. It is an older property, and that is part of its charm. We had a wee issue with the lack of hot water one morning, but other than that we loved our stay. We take the train to DC when we visit, so I cannot comment on the parking situation.
Loved it
The Tabard Inn is a delight. The building, interior, and rooms are charming. We did not get the room we expected, and after bringing it up w/ staff we were amazingly relocated to the room that we thought we booked without issue within minutes on a highly booked evening. We were very grateful. The Inn was on the pricier side for me, but we definitely got what we payed for, a great experience. We choose the in-hotel restaurant and were rewarded with that decision. The food and decor were very enjoyable and clearly a hit among locals not staying there but choosing it as their dining option. The wood-paneled lounge with blazing fireplace adjacent to dining was the cherry on top.
If you don't like the generic Radissons and Hyatt's then this is your place. Lovely, characterfilled and great staff. Highly recommend it.
Unique Inn
Very nice overall stay. Loved the character and unique feeling of this inn. Great place to stay. Can be challenging with narrow stairs and claw foot tub/shower. I plan on staying here again.
Loved the quirky accommodations and the excellent restaurant and great cocktails. Easy access to the Metro. Will definitely stay here on my next trip to DC.
Best ole inn in DC
A classic ole inn blocks from DuPont circle. Spacious rooms with OLD furniture. Reminds me of my grandmothers place. Excellent small lounge and bar w real fireplace.
Great historic Inn, love the ambiance. Restaurant and food excellent.
The location is excellent, and it is within walking distance to all attractions. The room is very clean, and it would be better if the carpet and sofa fabric can be updated.
The Tabard Inn exceeded my expectations!! The restaurant was highly recommended and it is top knotch in service, food, and atmosphere. We also enjoyed staying there for 3 nights in a quaint room with antique furniture and a claw foot tub. Its extremely cozy and the staff from the front desk, everyone was super nice and helpful. Even when at the last minute my husband fell ill and we had to stay another night, they provided extra blankets, etc. The night crew was beyond helpful. Highly recommend this outstanding restaurant and acccomodation. Great base for siteseeing. Loved it and cant wait to go back!
Love everything about Tabard Inn!
The Tabard Inn is wonderful. It is so unique and charming. The staff is fantastic. We have so many wonderful memories of our time at the Tabard Inn
We had a wonderful stay! Lovely and attentive staff. Convenient to Metro station. Fabulous restaurant. A
Nice and cozy budget hotel in Dupont circle, old building with victorian style architecture and decor.
The Tabard Inn is my fave hotel in DC. The staff is phenomenal and so accommodating. I love the rooms, art, furnishing, and decor. The food is great and live music on Sundays and Mondays in front of the fire is everything you need on a cold winter night. I seriously love this place.
Great
I recommend 👍
Nice place very old no TV in rooms more like a B&B just not my type of stay
Funky. Friendly.
It's an original ...
Very cool building, quirky decor that makes the most of a historical building. The restaurant is atmospheric and the food / wine was great. A shortish walk to many interesting places, shops, museums. Only downside is that the internet seems to date from the 18th century ...
The Tabard Inn is a wonderful rarity in an era of cookie-cutter and faux-historic corporate hotels. My room contained a delightful collection of furniture, art and standing or table lamps. I think, though, that they could fine a way to provide some plugs and USB ports, as well as a small work area, without undermining the rooms' historic flavor. In addition, the tub/shower was awkward to get in and out and lacked safety bars, and the hot/cold mixer didn't work properly. Still, a wonderful place to stay in DC.
Great vibe, staff and historic nature. Food was delicious, but wasn’t able to get in to eat but had to have reservations. Overall a wonderful stay!
Overall a great stay for the night. The hotel is beautiful and very historic. My room was on the third floor and they didn’t have an elevator so keep that in mind. I would stay again.
Gorgeous, cozy inn. Think: wood, fire, perfect winter spot
Such a unique & quirky place with parking at night on the block plus 2 paid parking. Never needed a lot!
Charming historic hotel, but lukewarm shower
Delightful, historic hotel brimming with charm. Staff was attentive, helpful, and very polite. The restaurant is quite good as well, and reasonably priced. My only complaint is that my room's water heater was not working properly, and produced only lukewarm water in the shower.
Amazing place.
Out of the box place. Artsy and unique. No TV and could hear noise from other rooms.
I'll be back.
I loved my stay. Creaky floors, hodgepodge of mixmatched well worn antiques and art, updated only where needed for functionality... For me it was the perfect cozy time capsule. Don't come here if you are looking for vending machines, elevators and a TV in your room. Lovely restaurant and drinks too.
I only stayed a night. But I enjoyed my stay. It’s a charming old hotel. Great bar and restaurant.
Lovely hotel, great food and ambience
The interior design was amazing and old fashioned.
Needs attention
Heater broke, mold in the bathroom, hot water in and out, mostly out.
Great Staff
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. The hotel is in a great location, quiet, but near the metro and restaurants and bars. The decor is varied and fun. The room was big and comfortable (though the bathroom was a little tight). Most importantly, though, the staff was phenomenal. Everyone went out of their way to be friendly. I would come back just for that.
Great little boutique hotel.
Great location, nice property and friendly staff. Room was very small.
Not recommended!
I don’t recommend unless you’re in a pinch for money and location. The property is very old and creepy. It’s not quaint it’s just uncomfortably old. Everything squeaks. There’s no elevator, no proper shower, just a corner in a makeshift bathroom, and the water took a very long time to heat. Plus the pillows are terrible, really old lamps, no TV, barely found an outlet, old curtains and old blinds that do not keep the light out.
I don’t know why I lost 135 dollars? In my bank account
I'll be back!
Not for everyone's taste perhaps
Stayed in the penthouse suite. Last-minute booking, quite affordable and unique for this neighborhood -- but there are caveats. The penthouse is a large, open apartment-like space with sitting areas, a kitchen/dining area, two beds (king and double), and a bathroom with a tub. Very cool and unique space, much larger than you would get at newer corporate hotels for this price. I could have lived here for a week. It was quiet with no creaking or disturbance from other guests. The ambience especially in the evening is chill and dare I say romantic. There are a lot of stairs to get up there, so it may be challenging for the elderly or those with a ton of bags. The furniture and fixtures are functional but dated (this is what you sign up for when you stay at Tabard Inn imo). The bed was comfortable and I slept soundly. The shower was a bit awkward -- small space, water gets on the floor, and the hot water only lasted for about 5 minutes. I was shivering by the end. It was my first time staying at Tabard Inn, and I think it helps to look at it as an experience. Try to remind yourself that it is an "inn", not a "hotel" like a Marriott or Hyatt. If you have stayed at similar places (in Europe perhaps?) or bed & breakfasts without all the modern amenities, then you are more likely to appreciate your stay at Tabard Inn. I think the restaurant and bar is still the star, but I'm glad to have stayed here at least once in my life. It really is a unique and historical place.
It was like at a stately home of days gone by. Love the antique furniture and art all over the property. The staff were wonderful and warm.
For years I've wanted to stay at the Tabard. I have to say I was very disappointed. Our room was listed as having a queen bed, but it was only a full. The bathroom was so small that the shower was over the floor. The walls of the bathroom did not reach the ceiling, so there was no privacy. The hot water took forever to come out in the sink and shower and the shower was either way too hot or way too cold. We were unable to bathe. All of this for "only" $500 per night! The food in the restaurant, however, was outstanding.
They provided me a third floor walkup and I am 80 years old....plus no bell service for luggage or elevator. Was not real happy with that situation. Secondly, lights kept flickering in our room during stay and they finally went out and had to wait for correction. Dresser drawer was missing handles and had hard time getting them opened for use. No black out curtains plus curtain rod on main window fell off. We did enjoy the dining room and the food service employees in both the dining room and at the bar.
The room could use more electrical outlets and at least one UsB port in the rooms
The location is great but my room was freezing, and that was despite turning the heater up to 80 degrees. My feet never warmed up and I slept for not even three hours. The bed comforter was very thin, and there were no extra blankets in the room.
this is a 100 years old hotel. It likes that you travel in time. I absolutly love it
Tabard Inn is unique, totally unlike the standard American hotel in decor and ambience. The beds were comfortable and the towels unusually soft and fluffy. The bathtub is long enough to lie down in. There is a restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The service for breakfast was excellent but the food was average. We wish we had understood that there isn't an elevator. We are in our 70s and on the fourth floor. We're active but it was a bit much.
Unique place...
It is a very, very old building. The front desk staff were great. However, if you have allergies this may not be the best choice. I ended up with a migraine an hour after arriving as im allergic to dust and such. Our room had an odd step up to the bathroom which was a hazard especially when waking during the night...not ideal for folks in their sixties. It was a unique one-night stay. The room was unique but wasnt exactly 😕 what i had envisioned. No television was odd. To get our room we walked through the restaurant. We did the off site parking as it was $24.00 less. That was a benefit as it was parking overnight until 5pm the next day.
The rooms are rustic with old furniture - I really like the decor. The bathrooms are more modern. Some mold staining on the shower grout, but so does my shower at home! The restaurant and bar within the Inn are wonderful -- really great outdoor seating in a patio area. Highly recommend staying here vs. the standard cookie-cutter hotels with their sterile atmospheres and Spartan furnishings.
Dangerous bath room!
The room I stayed in was a lawsuit waiting to happen. The bathroom consisted of a large clawfoot tub with a shower installed over it. There was no shower curtain, so water sprayed all over the bath area which was not a separate room from the bed. The tub was in a sunken tile enclosure that was almost a foot from a raised tile-covered area which also held the toilet. So, to step out of the tub onto a water covered platform a foot from the tub was scary. It was very slippery and there was only a terry cloth bath mat which was soaked. I nearly slipped and lost my balance, but there NO GRAB BARS. It is an extremely dangerous situation that could result in serious injury. I would not stay in that room again!
A hidden gem.
Old world charm in a hotel
It was full of old world charm and character and very convenient for DuPont Circle.
Great place. Cozy.
Charming old school DC institution
A DC institution for good reason. Very charming and unique historical property with loads of character and very cosy and comfortable rooms and a laidback overall atmosphere.
It's a throwback to the old Inns that are only interested in providing a comfortable and quiet place to stay. The Tabard Inn provides intimacy and value.
Highly recommend staying here, a quirky, unique hotel in a great location in DC. Staff were all really friendly and helpful and the restaurant is great too.
Classic, charming boutique hotel with a fantastic restaurant and beautiful hidden garden. The rooms and common spaces are full of gorgeous antique furniture, you feel like you’re gone back in time (in a good way). Finding a hotel in a great neighborhood with this much character is not easy! It’s a gem.
This property is historic and quaint, a plus for people who want to feel like they're in an inn that doesn't begin with Holiday. Especially for the wood floors and antique furnishings, it lets you feel a little bit back in time. The restaurant downstairs featured farm-to-table seasonal dishes, and the lounge was a comfy spot to sit and play cards. They carried our bags up to the room, which was nice because no elevator. No tv either, but we didn't notice at first because of all the tours and museums we had planned. The best part was the monsoon shower head--such a lovely fall of water, and charming antique bathroom fixtures. Everything was very clean, and they did room service daily, upon request. I'd stay again.
This is a really quaint hotel near DuPont Circle made up of 4 houses. All rooms are v individual & traditionally furnished. Don’t expect a tv or phone but good aircon & fan. Breakfasts are excellent & staff are v helpful & friendly. Dinner was expensive but they had a good menu. There are lots of stairs & steps up to the main entrance so maybe not great for people with mobility issues. We found it charming.
Affordable historic inn in heart of Dupont Circle. don't expect flat screens or ipads in the room, but great for a short stay for a meeting.
Great hotel with a lot of history… Very Chic and with caractère👍
I've stayed at the Tabard a bunch of times. It's the most unique property in DC. If you are the kind of person who likes all the modern conveniences of today's fancy hotels, The Tabard Inn probably isn't for you. All the rooms are different in their own unique and historic way. No TVs or fancy glass showers here but if you appreciate some historic ambiance, The Tabard Inn is the place for you! Staff is great... restaurant and bar is awesome... just an overall fun place to stay!
Atmospheric but not comfortable!!!
My room was not comfortable. There is a broken old couch with a random ill fitting cushion thrown on top. The room was large but there was no desk. The shower curtain was inadequate causing the bathroom to flood. There were insufficient and not nice bed linens. There was frequently no one at the front desk. Twice received bad information, once about directions and once about the time it would take to get to Union Station
I love this Inn; it's quaint and historic. The breakfast outdoor seating was beautiful.
This was my second stay at the Tabard Inn. Check-in was easy, and there is someone at the desk at all times. The property is very cool, with a very eclectic style. Each room is unique. The keys have wooden blocks with the room numbers, and they recommend that you leave them at the front desk when you are out. I love this, so I don't have to worry about losing them. During this stay we had an issue upon arrival with the lock for our room, but the staff were quick to assist us. They even offered us a glass of wine for our troubles while they worked out the issue. Maintenance was able to replace the lock while we were in the restaurant for breakfast the next morning. The hotel provided a $10 voucher towards our meal for each of the days that we were staying there. We have eaten there for breakfast, lunch and dinner and are always very pleased with our choices. The staff in both the hotel, as well as the restaurant, were always friendly and attentive. They have both valet and self-park available. We chose the self-parking option, so we dropped off our luggage with the staff and picked up our pass for the garage at that time. The garage is very close. The location is perfect and close to many landmarks. I would note that there are no elevators, so if stairs are an issue, I would check with the hotel before booking. I highly recommend the Tabard Inn.
Old style nice hotel
Wonderfully quaint little gem just south of DuPont. Nice staff. Great lounge. Great location. Awesome stay.
Excellent value, good service, unique property, well located, great restaurant
This place has a wonderful atmosphere.
Lovely older property, could stand a few updates. The staff was excellent
A very cute place to stay at, the decor and art was neat. And all the staff were very helpful and kind.
The Tabard Inn is delightful. Tremendous story appeal with its history, beautiful interior, and a very impressive restaurant with inventive locavore selection. The beverage selection is one you would expect from the finest boutique restaurants in Europe. And the cocktails?! Fresh, perfectly balanced liquid adventures. The staff is gracious, warm and welcoming. No attitude, just pure pleasure at having you at their establishment. You feel like a much loved member of an exclusive club. Seriously, if you're in DC, do it right. Stay at the Tabard. Its my new favourite.
Quaint Except for its Oddness
It was odd that the room lacked a TV but much weirder that the bathroom had window blocks in the wall adjacent to the hall. Part of the shower wall had window blocks that looked out into the hallway.
Very unique stay! The room was very clean and quiet. Staff was very nice and attentive. Would visit again!
