The heater/airconditioner was either on full blast or off and was very noisy so it was difficult to sleep. It did not appear to have thermostat control. I was either too hot or too cold and the blanket on the bed wasn't warm enough and there were no extras in the room. The water tasted strangely and my dog wouldn't drink it.
Strong smell in room! Unpleasant! Caused an allergic reaction. I left very early! Room was not very clean.
Rooms very clean second floor convienent parking on second level no going up stairs rooms cozy centrally located .
Very clean. Nice and quiet.
Rooms are average. What you would expect for a motel; clean rooms, friendly staff and area is quiet. Within walking distance of a grocery store and several restaurants.
Clean motel for the price. If they would upgrade their shower heads it would be 5 stars for me. It’s definitely older, but still clean and the staff are very friendly
Nice family running hotel, but needs some upgrades with the price we paid. Clean property, but rusty sink and tub, Floors are nice but dirty,
This is a family-owned motel. The check in was quick and friendly. The room was clean with nice towels and a comfy bed. Enjoyable stay.
OK for the price...
Fairly clean, but bare-bones service.
It was awesome the beds are so comfy!!
Loud!!! All night. If you’re looking for a quiet place don’t stay here. Bed was good and room clean. Workers stay here and have no filter in the parking lot. Expensive for what you get
People were out in the parking lot talking loudly until 10pm. Unable to find ice machine. Helpful in finding a good restaurant.
Convenient motel, great staff.
This is a motel so not the most luxurious but functional and convenient. The staff was very helpful and nice. We had issues with our tv and they were very attentive about getting it fixed. The room had a microwave, refrigerator, coffee maker and hair dryer and we used them all.
Bed comfy as advertised. When I first arrived, smell of cleaning products very strong. Delightful and helpful staff rinsed floor to help soften smell and opened windows. Helped a lot. I could have arrived just after cleaning too. Only real complaint is typical of most places like this: weak WiFi
Very nice people. Rooms were clean.
Avoid staying here
We didn’t feel safe after checking in. The mirrors were streaky, we had to wipe them down to see. The shower didn’t work. The front desk said we should have called to have them try a trick to make it work. For $160 a night, there shouldn’t be a trick to take a shower after a long day of traveling. They refunded us $20. Pretty pathetic. Would recommend staying somewhere else or another town if the other motels are full.
Average but costly
The property is in need of an overhaul. Pretty messy paint cover-up jobs. However it was generally clean and quiet. We felt it was too expensive.
Very clean. Well managed. Friendly and helpful managers. Quiet too.
Sunset Inn John Day
Comfortable, clean, good value for the cost, convenient to walk to restaurants in the center of John Day
It was very clean and good size and very nice staff. The internet didn't work well which was an issue with having to do some work for my job remotely.
Needs renovation
Very happy with our stay! Although this is an older hotel, it’s very clean, quiet, has updated bathrooms, great staff, comfortable beds, refrigerator, microwave, a table and chairs and is very accessible for handicapped patrons. We will definitely stay again!
Very clean. All the amenities we needed. Very nice staff. Would stay there again.
A nice hotel in a town that is slowly fading. Decent place to stay when in the area.
Poor service. Heater did not work properly. Room not restocked with coffee. Staff acted as if it was an inconvenience to ask a simple question
The bed was really hard
John Day Hunting trip
Friendly staff, clean room. We had our 2 large dogs with us. Very reasonable charge. Cute little table inside & outside.
Toilet flush produced a screeching noise every time, toilet seat had one cushion missing making seat slant.
It did the job, was pretty outdated. Staff was friendly
This place needs new beds and mattresses desperately! The air conditioner was noisy and worked hard all night, long.
No place to walk dog. Shabby towels. Way overpriced.
Bathroom needs a complete overhaul. It has water leaks and paint peeling.
Sunset inn
Floor was extremely dirty. Had to clean ourselves. Walked around our room barefoot and all of our feet were instantly black.
Loved that the linens were odor free - no scented laundry products.
We love the area the property is located at
Better than it looks
The outside of the place is frightful, as is the town as a whole. However, I slept like a baby in a comfy bed in a clean room. I'm dismayed at how much they charge for the place, but it's Capitalism at its best.
Nice accommodations
Room was dirty, find another place to stay.
The hotel was shabby but seemed clean. The beds were comfortable. The manager wore soiled clothing and this led us to believe that the hotel would not be clean. Since I am a senior he promised me a bottom floor room and that nobody would be placed in the room above me. However… the second night there was something very loud going on in the room above. People shoving things across the floor continually and walking back and forth. Lots of banging such as hammer sounds. This noice continued all night long. I did not sleep at all and my adult son woke up what he said was six times. The manager would not speak to me but send two little girls to tell me to call him on the phone. I did and he would not answer. Then he sent a young lady who gave me a $30 refund. This was an insult as compensation. I would never recommend this tacky place to anyone!!!
The stay was decent. Good tv. Good space and bed were pretty comfortable
I was very pleased with the cleanliness of my room!
The room was exceptionally clean, and we appreciated that a lot.
Tired property. No curb appeal. Clean room. Wouldn’t stay here again. Pictures over sell property expectations.
Our room was clean, relatively spacious and comfortable. Pool was not in service, but we did not have time for that anyway. Would stay there again.
Good value stay.
The office clerk was outstanding. He was friendly and helpful.
Kind staff and clean room
Good Place
Budget friendly motel. Dog friendly. Friendly staff.

We stayed two nights in John Day, first night we stayed at Best Western. Big mistake it cost us $$$ more and we had issues; couldn't get hooked up to the internet, the coffee maker in the room didn't work, and the shower was more like a sand blaster than a shower. I didn't need any soap, due to loosing a layer of skin! Save yourself $$$ and a big hassle and stay at the Sunset... You can buy a pretty nice breakfast for $$$ you will save.
