The facilities were excellent, except for our windows, which did not have the hardware to be left open. The staff were great and tried to help, but it wasn't rectified prior to our departure. Either way, that was the worst of it, so we had a wonderful experience staying here overall.

The staff wasn't friendly or helpful, there were 2 front desk members I was trying to get info help from on different days and they were very dismissive and uninterested in my questions. The property is beautiful and in good condition so it is a shame that the bathrooms were so filthy. The garbage in the women's bathroom was overflowing the entire time I was there. There was a toilet that had "skid marks" for the entire stay as well. The individual should've cleaned up after themself but they didn't and it was just left like that by staff for the whole of the weekend... I will be booking a different Hostel next time.

The best thing about this property is the location, which is what we really wanted, at an affordable price. We liked being close to the city, on the water, with an old sailing ship out the front and a great view of the old town Gamla Stan. It was absolutely perfect for the New Years Eve fireworks. We chose a 4-bed room for our family of 3 so we could have a room to ourselves in a place that is more like a backpackers. The toilet on our floor was broken, so we had to go down to lower floors, which was no big deal and I expect it's fixed by now. If you consider the phrase, "You only get what you pay for", then this place is pretty good - for the price. We are used to real hotels but Stockholm is very expensive so happy to settle for a lower standard at the same price we'd pay for a decent hotel in other countries. Most importantly it was clean, comfortable, great location, nice staff, and a fair price.

The property is very old (historic) so don't expect modern rooms. Ours was painted grey and my nine year old daughter likened it to a prison cell! We shared a bathroom which was cleaned regularly. The kitchen is small but has everything you might need. Other than that it was a clean and safe place to stay for two females travelling alone. Very convenient for the ABBA museum (via ferry) and the shops, etc.

All around great hostel

I stayed in the 16 bed hostel room. Very comfortable. You're in such a large room you hardly notice the other people. It's not your typical cramped room were one person can dominate the space. The shower on the third floor is a bit small but you can access the showers on lower floors. Those are a bit bigger. I'd certainly stay here again.

We liked that a shuttle boat was nearby that could take us to Djurgarden and its attractions and also to Gama Stan. We also liked the quietness and nature of the Skeppsholmen area. As for the hotel, on arrival, our taxi driver couldn't find the hotel and dropped us at the wrong place. Luckily, helpful people pointed the way and we dragged our bags through gravelly and rough paths to the hotel. The hotel lift is only accessible after climbing stairs to the 1st floor. The floor was quite dirty through the hotel until our third day when it was cleaned. The trash can in our shared bathroom was full on our arrival and stayed that way most of our stay. Our room had very little furniture, basically only a stool, a built-in shelve unit and hooks. The hooks were behind the shelves, which made them pretty much unusable. The shower floor was dirty with gobs of hair and soap pieces around the perimeter. Also, it took us almost two days to find the best way to the front desk from our room. The building is a challenging maze. The breakfast was nothing to write home about. Wi Fi was good and there were communal rooms with tables and chairs for use.

Incredible value for a stay in central Stockholm. Super helpful staff. Really interesting building in a fabulous location. Very clean, and sheets/towels are comfortable and well laundered. Do be aware, though - in shared rooms/dorms, you may be sleeping 3 feet away from a high functioning derelict, which can be disturbing in a range of ways.

We traveled as a family of 4 (children ages 6 & 4). We stayed on the AF Chapman in one of the cabins. I was pleasantly surpirsed at the privacy and quiet nature of the boat, considering it's in the hostel category. It is also very kid friendly, and there were many other families. I would say the main building is more busy as that is where the common areas and breakfast are located. While the bathrooms/showers are shared, they are individual rooms with separate locked doors. Each shower and toilet are separate from each other, instead of a multiple stall bathroom, which I had envisioned. The location is pretty and quiet, however it is a bit of a long walk to other parts of the city for small children, though there is public trans. My only complaint of our stay would be the temperature of our room. There is air circulation, but we stayed during early summer when the sun is hitting the boat at all hours. The room didn't cool off until later in the evening after 10pm. I noticed some rooms kept their doors propped open with chairs for more air. Overall - we loved the Chapman and the cafe in the main building was a really nice place sit in the evening.

Great experience and very pleasant stay

Great experience and very pleasant stay. At first I was very sceptical about staying in old ship due to noise and movement. But I was completely wrong, there was no rocking ( or very small) and it was very comfortable. They have shared bathrooms and showers, but there's plenty of them, so there wasn't any issues. As well both bathrooms and showers are separated to men and women. Very great stay, definitely recommend.

On the whole I really enjoyed my stay on the af Chapman. The views of Gamla Stan from the boat and from Skeppsholmen are great and Skeppholmen is the perfect central location to base yourself out of, being only about a 15 minute walk to Gamla Stan and a 30-45 minute walk to Djurgarden. The room that I booked was clean, but not overly so. There were some little fuzzes and things, but it wasn't the end of the world, just a bit disappointing given the price of the room. I also hadn't realized that hand soap wasn't provided for the sink in the room, which is on me, I was just surprised. It is in the bathrooms though so that was fine. In general, I think this is a solid stay in a great location and its fun to say you stayed on a boat.

Sleep on board, it is worth a try!

We stayed on the boat because it looked interesting and fun. Some reviews complained about access to bathrooms, and others that they wanted to stay on the boat but got rooms in the building on shore. So we initially booked a single night, thinking we could move if it was unsuitable. We also booked a "CABIN": rather than a "ROOM", which is clear enough if you look for it among the room options. We did indeed get a cabin on board and there were many bathrooms just down the hall. Bathrooms were clean and convenient, so we booked a second night. We used the shared refrigerator and kitchen in the building onshore (there is not one on the boat), and found it adequate for our needs, though the fridge was pretty full. We did not try the hostel's cafe, which appeared to be closed, though they claimed there was food available for those who purchased it elsewhere in the building. Staff was polite and easy to work with. Our cabin was in the very bow of the ship, so the floor curved upward and the walls inward. One thing people might want to be aware of is that the polished wood floors are slippery if you happen to be wearing socks. That combined with the sloping floor and very slight movement of the ship could result in falls. The bunk beds were easy enough to access that if I had to, I could have slept in a top bunk. Our cabin did have a noise issue, that came from rigging cables that vibrated in the wind to cause a rhythmic clunk - which was focused our our room by the bowsprit.

I will never take toilets for granted again.

Our rooms were in the main building. We were on the [european] "first" floor. (U.S.=2nd floor) there were 12 rooms on our floor and only 1 single toilet for all to share. For one member of our group with IBD, that was a nightmare, especially since the floor above us was still under reconstruction and had NO toilets. We had to climb stairs 2 FLOORS above ours in the hope that the two toilets there would be available. Even for those of us with no special needs, it was awful to have to fumble to find shoes in the middle of the night to go hiking in search of a toilet. We had booked 3 nights but it was an impossible situation for us. I explained to reception the next day that we wouldn't be able to stay the other 2 nights and she promptly refunded the 2 other nights.

We used the convenient washer/dryer and luggage rooms. They were renovating the bathrooms on our floor, so we had to walk up a flight of stairs, but no big deal. You can't beat the location and price. Would stay here again. (We spent one night on the af Chapman. Staying in a converted boat is definitely a unique experience. The views from the deck and from the room onto Gamla Stan are beautiful! For a hostel, the beds were comfortable and the lockers were large. There was a sink in the room and many washroom facilities on the boat. The only downside was that the kitchen was in the main building on shore. Not that big of a deal for myself, but may be for others. Also there wasn't a common area on the boat, which kinda sucked as a solo traveller, but there was one in the building. The one staff member I dealt with the whole trip was great! (Sorry I forget his name but he worked evenings.) Every suggestion he gave me was amazing, especially the food recommendations. Would 100% recommend this hostel to everyone!

No ship in winter.

I stayed in winter. You could not stay on the ship because it was too cold so you stay in a regular building across the street. The showers have no privacy for men. It is only 4 showers in one room no doors or curtains. The staff was very nice and helpful. The beds were very comfortable. Only one USB outlet per bed.

Like the environment, few things need to consider.

Like the environment around the Hostel. But few things that need to consider. 1. Access to transportation. There's only one public bus that pass this hostel is Bus number 65. The nearest MRT station is about 1Km far. 2. The corridor that guest pass by is a bit loud. Only walking is quite loud. 3. It's a SHARED bath room and toilet. (Seperate male and female) If you consider privacy, you may consider other choice. 4. Wifi not so good.

Comfortable, but in need of improvement

We chose STF for it's proximity to the Royal Institute of Art, as my partner's son is studying there. If you don't have a reason to be on the small island of Skeppsholmen, you'll likely be frustrated by the location, as there's not much around. Across the bridge, you can walk to the city center, and there are ferries, but just know that this is not a lively spot. We booked a private room, which was in the building with reception and the cafe (only the dormitories are on the boat). I was happy to see that many families and older couples were staying there, as I haven't stayed in a hostel for 20 years. We had two twin beds, on opposite sides of the room, but it was fine, and they had comfortable pillow tops. We inquired about getting a room with a view of the water but none were available. There is no elevator at the property, and I believe it is four stories high. We were on the floor with the kitchen and breakfast room, which meant it was busier than the rooms upstairs. The breakfast was not worth the money for me, as there were limited vegan options, but my partner found it ok. I do wish that the kitchen were bigger, especially as people staying on the boat come over to use it, too. There was simply not enough room for everyone, so it's best to keep meals to what can be eaten cold or heated in the microwave. The showers were also quite frustrating, as the water only stays on for a few seconds before you have to press it again. We had no problems with sharing the bathrooms.

Disappointing

A disappointing stay here right from the beginning when I discovered I was not staying on a boat but in a separate building - I chose and booked this place for the novelty of the advertised boat stay. On my first night the 17-bed mixed dorm I booked consisted of me (female) and 16 males. One of the men made an inappropriate joke about this which left me very uncomfortable. Many hostels these days have a policy about purposefully booking mixed dorms with more gender balance. The dorm was also far too hot with no air con, and it smelled really bad! My bed was uncomfortable, some of the frame was missing so the mattress sagged down through the base. There was no plug socket near my bed, I had to go to the floor below to plug in, meanwhile, my bed lamp was plugged in behind someone else's bed and kept being unplugged for his phone charger. The shared bathroom on my floor was out of action for my whole stay so I had to use the bathroom on the floor below. The shower was annoying, a push button for the water that only last 60 seconds before needing to push again. A few positives: most of the staff were friendly, the location is really convenient for sightseeing, and the wifi worked with a wide enough range that I could pick it up in a cafe on the other side of the water.

Rockin the boat in Stockholm

Great place to stay just for the experience of sleeping on. Used the tall ship. Would recommend getting your own cabin if possible. Nice quiet area within walking distance to the nightlife nd the ferry to the Vasa Museum, Vikings and ABBA museum is 5 -10 minutes walk just around the other side of the island. The ship also has a bar and restaurant open Thurs to Sun

Good things: Location, Staff, Private Room.

Location, friendly staff & cleanliness of my private single room were the positives. Your best option if you are a solo traveler on a budget who does not dorm. On the island of Skeppsholmen right across from Gamla Stan, no other hostel in Stockholm has this view. There is a separately run cafe on the ground floor by reception, but I found I could cook my meals or prepare a fika upstairs in the hostel kitchen then bring them outside and sit at a table and enjoy the views for free; also a grassy hill out front is quite popular for both tourists and locals to picnic and sunbathe. Know that you will still pay roughly 75-100 USD x night for such a room at this budget hostel - which is a bargain. TIP: Try to request a room with windows facing the water. I was in 216 (window, but no view) on Floor 2. Furnishings were basic, but the room was spotless, double bed had me sleeping like a baby. Book a private room, your bed is pre-made and you are given one bath towel. Shared kitchen: two stove ranges + very large commercial fridge. However, there were never clean glasses or coffee mugs & pans could use an update. Biggest downside: no freezer. Showers: individual stalls were passable. Toilets on my floor were disgusting- photos attached. The pervading smell of urine and overflowing soiled toilet paper bins were ever-present. I stayed 4 days incl. a weekend - were only cleaned once a day in the mornings, only after the 9am rush. For such a large and busy place, horribly inadequate.

I can’t begin to describe how helpful and friendly the staff are at this hostel I had a lot of Tavel problems and the staff helped me every step of the way to getting my bag back, to finding my lost phone on taxi, and also most important not letting me loose hope of ever fixing my situation. I can’t say enough praise about how comforting the staff where it completely change a bad holiday to one I enjoyed. And on top of that I loved the af chapman the atmosphere of staying on board such a lovely ship in one of the best locations in Stockholm for the price you pay you can’t find better value for money in Stockholm.

Affordable in Centre of City - very decent hostel

Hostel has some rooms in the ship, some in nearby building on land where reception and cafe are to be found. Situation right in the centre of City is great.

Nice stay

Very good and friendly staff. Quite economical and cheap for a stay in such an expensive city in Stockholm. Doesn't need to pay for lien and bed sheets - so it can be cheaper than other hostel! Facing the ship and the sea. Very nice and happy walk from the station.

Pleasantly surprised to find kitchen with equipment and refrigerator available. Beds comfortable. One shower ran cold water only but didnt discover this until in, so was very uncomfortable. Location wonderful for Stockholm visit. Walking distance to starting point of Hop On, Hop off city tour. People of all ages stay here. Be warned that luggage must be carried upstairs as no lift is available.

All aboard!

great experience to stay in a cabin of a full-rigged ship. This is a hostel and as such, we found the ship to be clean and comfortable with good shower and loo facilities. Opposite is the reception and cafe / bar and the land-based hostel + luggage store. We only used cafe area for a quick beer in the evening and a coffee in the morning and found to be just what we wanted. Staff were friendly and helpful. Would definitely stay again.

Good place to stay for few days

I stayed in a single room for five days. As a solo traveler, this place fulfilled all my needs for a few days. The room and toilet are clean. The scene from the window is simply stunning. The shared kitchen is also well equipped. The location is also good for me, a quiet place.

Good stay on the boat

This is a good hostel and I enjoyed my stay. Would have loved a working galley on the boat to cook in and common area to eat so I could have lived in the boat for a few days. + Beds comfortable and plenty of room in dorm. Table and chairs in dorm room which was great! Showers large, had good water pressure and plenty of hot water. Kitchen in main building well stocked for cooking meals. Staff friendly and helpful. - Flow control showers ... had to keep pushing the button for water

Fantastic hostel!

I loved this hostel! Great location, good size rooms and good facilities. We arrived very early on check in day, and staff were very good getting us checked in and allowing us to store our luggage free until our room was ready. The room (a twin with bunk beds) was a very good size and even had wardrobes, chairs and a sink, and we were provided with towels. Very comfy beds, each with its own bedside light and a plug socket. Showers were both hot and powerful, and you never had to queue. Easy to find from the train station (about 20 minutes walk), and close to lots of the main attractions - we either walked or got the hop on hop off boat everywhere. Staff also let us store our luggage for free after check out which was appreciated!

Good experience in a different type of hotel

Overall was fun staying on the boat. Staff were really helpful. Stairs were a little narrow but there was a lift available. Rooms were small but it was comfortable and clean. It's a lovely boat and interesting to walk around. There were plenty of bathrooms and showers and were clean, as was the hostal itself. Great kitchen facilities and bonus was laundry room! Provided great views at sunset.

Surprisingly spacious. Excellent value.

I was surprised by how spacious my shared dormitory and the entire deck were aboard the ship. Very clean with more than enough showers and toilets on the ship. I am very pleased to have stayed here for 3 nights. About 10 minute walk to Stockholm Central train station.

Fun to be staying on a boat

Dorm rooms are basic and note that there is no rocking motion on the boat. The only complain is that the locker requires small lock. The pad lock I brought was too big. Location is convenient if you don't mind like a 10 minutes walk.
