The most disappointing aspect of this property is that it lacks a backup generator in case of power outages, a common occurrence in P.R., and occurred during our stay. We were without power for the better part of 2 days out of 3 we stayed there. It is unacceptable that a hospitality business would not have a backup power. Further, the lack of power compromised the security gate to the premises. My attempt to contact the owner/ operator about a refund or their policy regarding such remained unanswered. Finally, they provide 2 towels for the entirety of our stay, 3 days, so housekeeping is pretty much a joke. I would never recommend this so -called hotel /guest house to anyone. I would look elsewhere if I were you.

Great stay - inaccurate descriptions

We enjoyed our time at Mare and had a very good experience. The one issue is that what you see in the pictures is not necessarily what you will get and the rooms vary greatly. Some had a refrigerator, others didn't; some had shelves and spacious bathrooms; our room had only a clothes rack with 5 hangers and you could only fit one person in the bathroom at a time. Only one room had a luggage rack so most of us lived out of our suitcase on the floor. The pool picture is not of the pool at Mare, although the pool was lovely. Overall I recommend it. We had a great stay and the staff who worked during the day were helpful. Just temper your expectations for the room you are assigned.

Tried to scam

I booked through Expedia, but upon arrival, I discovered there was no reception by the building or entrance. As I hadn't received a code to access the gate, I had to call the hotel for assistance. The employee I spoke with instructed me to create a user account on Expedia to obtain the code, even though I hadn't received any code initially. Despite attempting to call back seven times, I had no luck reaching them. Suddenly, I received another call apologizing for not receiving my billing information from Expedia. To proceed, they requested that I email a picture of my credit card. It's important to note that it's not advisable to send credit card information via email. As a result, they eventually canceled my reservation. Ironically, the only positive outcome was that I had to find another hotel at 6 pm.

For starters this is not your average hotel, more like a motel room. minus a fridge or microwave. Just white cement walls that felt like a box. There are no amenities other than that pool that I never seen anyone inside of, so I stayed away. Hair was everywhere, bathroom, sheets. You can’t hide much using white sheets The AC remote was a universal remote and not connected to the ac. We had to program it from codes we looked up. It’s in the 80s in PR. So an ac set on 80 was not going to work, I’m glad we even figure out what was going on with the air. The shower is more like a very low pressure sprinkler. The best part of this place is that it’s close to everything. I have no idea why they installed these door knobs on these doors, that felt like a whole maze to use. The email said it was European, idk I’ve been to London and never seen such a difficult knob. Overall We made the best of it, it’s amazing what you can get use to.

Please do not stay!

Do not recommend! This is not a typical hotel it’s more of an Airbnb style. We booked for three nights and only stayed two because we felt so uncomfortable. First night-When we arrived we got in at around 2 am. The floors and side tables were dirty and there was hair on the bed. It was 2 so I couldn’t reach out to anyone for help. We cleaned what was bothering us. Second night- At 3 am there was banging on our door so loud we thought it was an emergency. Our “neighbors” were pounding on all the doors.We reached out to the contact given to us and no response. I texted the contact given to me. When I expressed my concerns they were dismissive until I mentioned the hair on the bed and they gave us the code to another room which was in better condition. It was our last night anyways. We did not feel safe at the hotel anymore and found somewhere else to sleep… Overall do not recommend and are non refundable for a reason! Also picture attached is the face of a lady who’s was completely rude to us and insulted us

Best Place for the Money

I've stayed at Mare for 5 different weeks this year, staying a different rooms (#33, 32, 27, 22, 21). It's my go to place in San Juan. Having traveled for 30 years on business, Mare meets and exceeds my expectations. For the rate, you cannot find a better deal. The hotel is clean, modern furnishings and has all you need if looking for a basic service hotel and not wanting to pay resort fees and other hidden costs. It is located on great, quiet residential street. You can feel like a local. Once you find your morning coffee and breakfast hangout (Regina across the street), you can head out to the beach (down the street) or venture further to Condado (walking 10 to 15 mins). I rent a car while in Puerto Rico and have no trouble finding street parking (avoid exorbitant hotel overnight parking fees). If you are expecting a pool boy or room service, this is not your place.

We really enjoyed our stay here. Close to the airport, super close to the beach, lots to eat around in the area. If you want to visit other parts of the city, it’s pretty easy with Uber (most rides were about $5). Think about this place like a mix between a boutique hotel and an Airbnb. The kitchen you see is outdoors and shared and I loved that unique touch. There are two fridges, a restroom, and a laundry room all in the open space. staying here gave us a unique perspective on the area- we met some great neighbors who were staying at the mare. Although the staff you see primarily on location speak Spanish- they were extremely helpful and patient with the language barrier. My only suggestion would be to add a foot wash somewhere in the area.. I could tell people were using the pool to rinse sand off after visiting the beach. If you can, definitely book a room with a terrace- that was my favorite part. Would definitely stay here again!

Everything

I liked that I was given a very nice new room right away once I informed them that the ac was not working.I also lived there was a pool in the property.I didn’t like that my original room didn’t have air for two (2) nights & the room was SUPER small & not modern. I also didn’t like there was no designated parking.

Overall we had a nice stay. The room we initially were given was way too small. It was like an oversized closet. But staff was kind enough to let us use a larger room which we enjoyed much better. I did not like the concrete floors and the ants were getting under the door and coming into the room. The water pressure on the shower head was very low. Staff was very responsive and the washer and dryer was a plus. The location is the best! Literally steps away from the beach and many restaurants. Ubers had no problem finding us.

We are so glad we chose Stay at Mare! The distance to the beach was very short and convenient. Even though the beach was down the street, the pool was also awesome for us to get in after we left the beach. It was also a 15 minute walk to a ton of restaurants up the street and about a 10 minute drive to Old San Juan. The Uber was very cheap in Puerto Rico and they easily picked us up/dropped us off. The rooms were clean and Esmeralda (management) was so friendly and helpful. The back area with the kitchen the free waters in the fridge was a huge plus!

Clean and efficient. Great mattress in my room...room smelled awesome too.... Best AC Unit I ever had in my life... just because of this I will go back. But in addition it's well located. Too bad some guests don't clean up after themselves but the place gets cleaned several times a day anyway... Rooms could use a few more wall shelves...it would help a lot..

Odd but it works!

Not a typical hotel; there is no front desk and maids did not come. But the room has enough basics and beach towels, was lovely and comfortable. The property was very nice and even came with a cat. Loved the pool. Great location, next to all the restaurants you could want and 2 blocks from a beautiful beach.

we were looking for a place in this specific area. as we wanted to stay around local area in a walking distance from everything. location is top. the property is quite and unique. we were aware of the minimalism of the room; we just didn't think it will be so little. keep that in mind. the common area is nice, not as in the photos though but was quiet and relaxing. overall cleanliness is 3/5 our room wasn't clean, the host sent someone to clean, that didn't really clean. end up cleaning our room ourselves. common area table etc... weren't clean at all.

The stay was amazing. The space was minimalist, clean, and cozy in the heart of everything.

Hidden gem

Very basic room. No cable BUT was two blocks from beach and close to restaurants and bars. It’s definitely a hidden gem and I would definitely stay again.

Nice spot.

Really nice spot. Basic rooms but very clean. Comfortable bed. The shared kitchen and pool area are great. Wifi is strong thought the property. The beach is a 5 min walk and you're surrounded by cafes, bars and restaurants. Just far enough away from the main roads so it's a bit quieter. Old San Juan is under $20 Uber/taxi away. Very easy check in/out.

Great for the price!

This hotel is in a great location and is just a block or so away from the beach. The pool is beautiful and the rooms feel small but aesthetic. There was also plenty of towels, a washer/dryer and some free water/sodas/sparkling waters. The only thing I would change is to add a few hooks but otherwise a great find in a great location!

Location!

Best location en San Juan. 1.5 mile walk from best beach. Beach is near parque, with shady palm grove, not crowded, more swimmable than the condado beaches to the west. Nice big waves with limited to no riptide when we swam mid Jan. Hotel is at crossroads of beach, Condado (more upscale), and Calle Loiza (more urban). Plenty of 24 hour convenience/grocery options in walking distance. Also clothing stores, restaurants, street food, drug stores, and lots of shopping variety. Bebo's cafe couple blocks away was our go-to when we needed to refuel. $10 Uber ride or $15-20 Scooter ride to OSJ. $10 to SJU. Hotel itself is a nice property with chill pool area and communal kitchen with outdoor bathroom, stove, fridges, fully stocked dishes and cookware. Room was clean but very bare bones. That's okay. It encouraged more outdoor activities. Smart TV should be raised to view easier from bed. Only place to sit is bed, and not many surfaces to put anything on. Bed and pillows were clean and comfortable. Good size fridge in room with freezer. Plenty of seating and tables outside so why not? You're not in Puerto Rico to stay inside all day or night!

I really liked Stay at Mare and I’ll be staying there again if I go back to Puerto Rico. Here are a few things to note and that I disliked. 1. I wish they provided a little chair to sit on instead of having to sit on the bed, this is especially true when just arriving from the airport, pool or ocean. 2. I wish they provided a hook to attach the key to while in the room. 3. Speaking of doors, I hated them so much, they’re impossible to open, even after I thought I had gotten the hang of them. Lol 4. Provide an iron. Other things to note is that it is noisy, you can hear people walk around inside the building and the bed was creaky AF. Other than this, I did enjoy my stage and would recommend the hotel.

This property was beyond our expectation! From the room to the pool to the relaxation area! It’s in the perfect spot with a bunch of walkable restaurants and was only 5 mins from the airport and everything else. The beach is literally a block down from the hotel and it’s gorgeous. The owner was extremely responsive and helpful. The only thing with booking a room is to pay attention to the room you’re looking at. We had room 30 and it was significantly smaller than a lot of the rooms on the property. Some even had personal balconies and larger bathrooms.

This was a wonderful place to stay. It is incredibly close to the beach and within walking distance of some great places. We like to walk, so this location allowed us to reach Condado and even Miramar. The room was cozy and the AC was perfect. The owner was incredible and responded quickly to any questions I had. A great find.

Love this place! Clean, sheets are white, crisp, pillows are soft. Its so close to the beach! Pool was refreshing. Kitchen with water love it. Georgina is very accomodating to our request . Excursions they can pick u up in the corner. I would stay again.

The whole place was simply peaceful and beautiful

Overall, I would recommend Stay At Mare. Location was great, close to OSJ, a block away from the beach and great places to eat around all minutes away from hotel. The rooms were nice and clean and spacious and beds were comfortable!!!! The pool has perfect temp..nice way to relax after being at the beach. The staff was very friendly too and reachable too. My only issues but these were noted on the website..no elevator (yes I packed too much) and good and bad..free street parking. You do have go around the block to look for a spot but they are free parking. I would stay here again knowing what to expect now. Maybe a suggestion...have a small lounge chair in rooms? I don't immediately shower when I get back and I don't like to sit on bed before showering. I like to relax first as soon as I get to my room.

My stay was even better than I expected. I underestimated the photos and felt like the experience overall was pretty much perfect for what I needed. I work remotely and this property is great for that, I was able to sit in front of the pool on the patio with my laptop. It's pretty quiet, it's not typically very busy in the pool with people coming and going. Facilities were clean and really really appreciated the complimentary bottles of water so thoroughly stocked. I used the kitchen to make tea and use silverware for takeout which was also handing. It's amazing walking distance to the beach, and many food options around. I would definitely stay here again in a heartbeat. Will be recommending it to my friends as well.

Beautiful hotel and very pleasant experience! Prime location within walking distance of Condado beach and very close to Old San Juan and several dining and nightlife experiences as well.

No staff at all. See thru doors are also hard to lock and unlock no seeming very private. No iron in room or any standard stuff.

We loved staying here - my friend and I came in for a girls’ weekend and absolutely loved it. The asthetic is calming and comfortable, the beds are soft with high-quality sheets, the pool is beautiful and you are two blocks from the beach! We will be back.

We are so grateful for the customer service provided by Esmeralda and Stay at Mare! Our flight landed in San Juan at 6am and they allowed us to check into our room at 7 with no extra hassle or fees! Amazing! Clean, minimalist, simple and sweet. Felt safe and enjoyed the quiet privacy but could head a block over to either the beach or main street for action any time. Just to clarify for those of you looking at the website photos, there is no pool. Some nice common areas though for relaxing or cooking. Great for couples looking for a retreat without all the fuss.
