Loved the rooftop pool, NOT for light sleepers

Loved the rooftop pool with hammocks and in water loungers. Great value and location. Room was okay but a bunch of little things. Paint was peeling and walls looked dirty. Water pressure wasn’t good. And the walls really thin. Could hear construction outside and everything in rooms next to and above you. And hallways were really hot as others have commented. Staff was friendly and helpful with resolving issues esp when our airport shuttle didn’t show up

My family and I enjoyed our stay at Sofia. It is perfect if you're low maintenance and looking for a simple place. We made our own meals in the kitchenette and bought groceries from the nearby Walmart and Mega. The central area is only 15-20 min by foot, and there is also a BiciPlaya station right outside the hotel. You can also catch the Colectivo a block away.

Great value! Rooms are nice and clean with a modern esthetic. The root top is amazing! I would stay here again!

I called to asked to drop our bags off early because we had an excursion that day and couldn’t check in until 3pm. We get to the hotel around 11:15am wait around and charge our phone. The front desk person allow us to put our stuff in a secluded area. She never said they didn’t have power because part of the hotel had a little power. We come back from our excursion to find out that it hasn’t been power all day and we got back to the hotel around 7pm that evening. Which if we would have known earlier I could have found us elsewhere to stay. At this point we literally just changed our flight and flew home. Still waiting on my full refund.

Had a great stay here for 6 nights, very clean and comfortable room, central area,.extra thanks to Ed at front desk. Low sound proofing, but we didn't mind as we were not planning on staying in the room all day. excellent value. Anything we needed was known to be available for us during our stay.

Could have been better

The hotel was lovely but the shower on the pool deck didn’t work and there was no hot tub which would have been nice or to heat the pool as the weather is cooler this time of year.

The property it self is ok just to many things went wrong. 1st the hotel new they didnt have power didnt notfiy none of the guest who was arriving before hand or try to accommodate or give some type of refund for the inconvenience. 2 they changed my room moved my stuff without my permission and now missing a pair of shoes. 3 the last nite staying there the room they moved me 2 having problems with the door lock since they moved me now i cant get in my room and i had a flight to catch at 8am. They literally had to take the door apart. So i can get my passport and bags. Im fighting now to get a refund. For my entire stay.

Although this property is in an excellent area, the actual hotel lost its electricity on our second night. We were forced to be in the dark with no Wi-Fi, no air conditioning, and all of our food in the mini fridge spoiled. The staff had no plan to fix or move us into an air-conditioned unit, which there were a few!! The front desk was very complacent, not caring about our comfort at all. We ended up having to leave and they actually encouraged us to go find alternative arrangements to contact our booking provider for a refund.

Bare

The hotel is centrally located and could be a nice stop after a long trip. However the room was totally bare: it had a kitchen without any appliances or china or pots, not even a coffee maker or a tea kettle. The staff was indifferent, fortunately we only stay one night.

Staff answering in a rude manner and unnecessary atittude

Despite booking consistently with Expedia, this stay was tainted by a very bad staff at the hotel. Rude and bad staff response during our entire stay.

It was awful.. no electricity, no WiFi.

Amazing!

Very walkable access to Playa Del Carmen. 3 large grocery stores nearby. Great Peruvian restaurant accross the street and good pizza very close. Rooms were clean. Bed comfort was average. Pool was nice. Laundry machines available for free but laundry room was very hot. Pool table was useless. The top was warped and sagging but not a deal breaker.

We stayed here for almost a whole month and loved everything about this property. Everyone who worked there were always happy and smiling and always helpful. We especially liked Edwardo who we always seemed to laugh with . We did stay in an a room that had an adjoining door and even though we were notified we could switch ..we did not and just an fyi...you can hear EVERYTHING going on in next room ..but we loved our room because we could see part of the ocean and cozumel and listen to spanish music playing from across the street ..Really cant wait to return . Thank you so much .We had a fantastic stay !

Private, inexpensive to stay and very friendly staff. Nice size bed and very open and bright

I had a bad experience at this property for these reasons: toilet wasn’t working properly and got repaired 2 days after. Meanwhile they gave us a bucket to collect water and dumped in the toilet,towels were not replaced often neither room were clean daily.

Maintenance Required but Great Service

This hotel needs some maintenance. We had some issues over the 56 day stay. Ants were an everyday experience. No hot water in the shower or the jaccuzi . Pool is really cold, too cold to use mid day.Several power outages and elevator shut downs over the same period.Kitchen needed more supplies.No sound proofing in any room. Miguel and Lorena were of great service over our time at the Sofia. Lorena was one of the best housekeepers we have had. When my partner was biten by spiders, Lorena purchased some topical medication for her to use the next day. That was " over the top" service. We just hope the Sofia can get some major help on the other issues required.

Location is very good. Receptionist was kind and helpful. Easy to go to downtown and Megamart. I stayed in room 309. Room was clean. However, hot water is not available, and water pressure is very low. Except for the water issue, it is a good hotel.

Passports and other valuables were scattered without care. • Manager was dismissive, interrupted us, and unapologetically said, “This is how we operate.” • Policy states they can charge for another night, but they claimed they couldn’t, forcing us to rebook a more expensive room online. • When we expressed our concerns, the manager said, “Go write a review; it doesn’t matter—we have a business to run.” • Rooms were okay, but the lack of professionalism and empathy overshadowed everything. If you stay here, don’t expect top-tier customer service or care for guests most of the staff didnt even greet us throughout the week.

Good location, walkable to multiple restaurants nearby and 5-10min away to 5th ave. Plenty of parking spaces in front, need to use the meter. 10pm-10am no parking charge. Front desk reception was very nice, she was helpful getting Wi-Fi setup

It was very great very clean property had everything that you needed in there very modern. I enjoyed every second of my stay there.

Had a couple of problems…

Great location just far enough away from the hustle and bustle, yet close enough to walk everywhere. Plenty of good dining options and Mega grocery all within a 5-10 minute walk. Nice having full kitchen facility. Bed was comfy. Shower didn't have great pressure but was sufficient. Pool is much smaller than it looks in photos and very cold. Hard to go in past knees because it was so chilly. Only 4 loungers and 3 cabanas by the pool, so had to get there right away to get one. Music very loud by pool and people would come in and crank their music to try to be louder than what was playing. Definitely took away from the relaxing atmosphere. Also wish they enforced no smoking/vaping in the small pool area. Gross having peoples vaping clouds drifting over your face when trying to relax.

Condo problems are plenty

First of all, the staff are helpful and willing to do whatever they can. BUT,some things in these condos cannot be fixed or repaired. No hot water in any of the showers. Sewer smells everywhere around the property. Jaccuzi not in operation.Very hot in the hallways and the elevator.The rooftop pool is very nice, even though the water is very cold, at best.Poolside bar not in operation either. Sugar ants under the sink area as well.On our second month we started of having problems with Visa payment. Not Visa' s fault they say, nor is it the condos problem. Had to get cash in order to stay in December. Reception young lady was helpful so I could max out my withdrawal at the ATM and pay it over 3 days. Not what you want, or need, to do on a nice warm vacation.

The place is great and very affordable. I would definitely recommend it.

The workers were really kind to us and hepful giving us advices about what to do in Cancun, they cleaned the room everyday they have limited parking spots, you have to pay for the ones on the street, the roof garden is really pretty and the pool is great, the check in process is really easy and they didnt ask for any deposit, In general I had a great experience at this place.

Lack of emergency response and care

My family got stuck in the elevator due to a power outage for almost an hour. They did not have a generator, and we had to call 911 since the company managing the elevator was not responding. Additionally, the property did not have the emergency key to the elevator. I had booked two rooms, but due to the emergency, we lost access to one of them. The staff did not have a master key or any means to open the room, and we had to wait approximately four hours to regain access after the elevator incident. Furthermore, we overheard during the interaction with the firemen that the property lacks many basic safety protocols. Besides the absence of a generator, there were no emergency lights, and the person at the reception did not have access to a master or emergency key. Despite all of this, we did not receive an apology or any form of compensation from the property.

Pros: Close to el fogon and don sirloin for eating options. Walkable to centro (eg 20 mins to Benito and 5th) Beautiful room, I looked out towards the coast and had a tree view and morning sun. great big bed, nice firm mattress. Was close to my chosen dive shop. Cons: Room not soundproofed - can hear outside, upstairs, next door and everything in the hallway Hallway is open to outdoors, traps heat and gets hotter than outside. Requested maintenance as (weird problem) the shower ONLY had HOT water but it wasn't fixed by the time I checked out.

Its walking distance to 5th and the beach. The rooftop pool was the best part of the hotel. There are lots of cheap and tasty places to eat within minutes

The place is great, and it is very accessible to downtown and the beach. The only problem is how hot the area around the elevator is. But, overall, it is a very good place for the price you pay.

Great staff and place!

Honestly compared to the price this hotel is really good. I have only 2 things to mention. 1. AC did not work well. So every night I was sweaty when I slept. That is a bummer. 2. The shower room is not dirty but whenever i turned on the water, it was stinky. While I took shower, that smell was gone or maybe my nose got used to it lol Except for 2 things it was excellent! If I reported it to the reception they might check but also I was tired and lazy after going to beach so I did not care. And again, when i think the price, it is still excellent

The apartments are modern and functional, clean and spacious. The area is noisy at night from surrounding night clubs.

Roof top pool

We stayed at Sofia by Bunik for two nights and found it to be a calm and peaceful spot, despite some occasional noise from construction across the street. The location is perfect, making it easy to explore the area, and the price was very reasonable. The hotel was clean and offered convenient workspaces, which was great for getting some work done while traveling. Although we ended up leaving our belongings there for the entire week to hit the road, the two nights we spent were pleasant. A good option for budget-conscious travelers who need a well-located and practical place to stay.

Bugs in the shower, shortage of towels, only allowed one key for the two of us even tho it's needed to get in and out, full time day staff at the reception desk was extremely rude every day. We travel here a couple times a year and this is the first place I can say I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND!

This is our 2nd stay at sofia.. first stay was 10 days and other than a few icky issues with the pool, it was good. THIS stay will be 28 days and it's been terrible from first day. The biggest complaint is that the water pressure in our shower is almost nonexistent. It takes me no less than 20 minutes to shower and if I have any sand from the beach it takes longer. Maintenance finally came but it made little difference. Our first stay the pressure was great. The only hook to hang anything on (seriously only one in the whole room) is just the screw plate. There's no a/c in the halls, we are fairly acclimated.. spend 6 mo a year here and walk everywhere most days but we don't sweat until we get back to hotel and have to wait for elevator. We seem to be in the high traffic zone too. With the exception of the first couple nights, there have been multiple rooms with families on both sides of us ladt 3 nights lots of in and out slamming doors, kids running and yelling/being loud in the halls well after 1am.

The people very nice and frenly.

There is no way those positive reviews are real. No shot. The pictures are all photo shopped. We’ve stayed in dozens of hotels in playa and this by far is the worst one. The telephone in the room is decorative (seriously). Bugs/gnats all over the kitchen counter. The shower and bathroom sinks are disgusting. The pool bed cushions were disgusting. Just a terrible, terrible, hotel. Please do yourselves a favor and do not believe the positive reviews. Those have to be bought and paid for. TERRIBLE.

Perfect hotel I had no issues

The properties not a hotel, it is us more like condo rental. Located a bit far from main beach and main dining area on (th avenue. Although the room I had was very nice, I would not chose to stay there again

Great budget hotel in the center of town easy walking distance to restaurants and 5th Av. Unfortunately my room was on the ground floor so there was no view and it was a bit noisy. I could hear staff talking and playing music when I was trying to sleep. View from pool deck on roof is awesome.

Room is big for a studio with high ceiling but found you can hear the noise fairly easily. Cleaning staff was up early to clean and can hear car driving up and down. Nice pool and good wifi and AC. Close to shopping and healthy food options near by.

The staff, Mich and Josh, were excellent! They were very accommodating and helpful. I remember struggling with the parking. The parking meters only accept coins which we didnt have at that time. Josh generously lent us money and Mich even came out to explain to us how it works. These things made a big impact to our impression of the place - easier to let go of minor things. Overall, this place for the price is great.

Positives: Price was $50 a night Full Kitchen with Fridge, stove, coffee maker. Huge grocery store close by, plus a 7-11 near by. Amazing rooftop pool with area to BBQ!! Nice little balcony in room Elevator was nice and new and quick. Main area only 10 min walk away Not as positive: Shower was a little dirty and very weak water pressure, wasn't a big deal for me Stairwell was super hot , minor inconvenience The street was a little sketch There was noise but with the A.C unit running you can't hear much. If you have a car, Street parking only, 6 Hours max for 60 pesos or $3 U.S. 10A.M.-10P.M., Coins only or pre paid parking card. If you don't feel comfortable parking on street or go on a day trip there is Mall parking close by which is open 24 hours a day in an underground lot, its like 10-20 pesos/hr or 50 Cents -$1 U.S./hr Overall: For the price it was an excellent deal! A little off the beaten path but everything is close by. The rooftop pool was amazing! If you need strong water pressure for a shower I wouldn't recommend.

The toilet didn’t work two nights. The shower did t work the AM I left and they made me get a new night so I could shower after checkout time. Shower didn’t work when I woke up. Their hallway and staircase is broiling hot. They never show up to fix the safe, toilet, shower
