Great spot for Sepilok just a bit run down
We enjoyed our stay here. Its a perfect location for exploring the sanctuaries and the food is average. There isnt loads around so its definitely fine for the few days you may be here. The grounds are beautiful and rooms were clean and spacious. The place just looks a bit run down but is fine for the price you pay.
Beautiful surroundings
Beautiful surroundings. With fish, turtles and small alligators. Many dogs who want to join you at meal times :) Fish food available if you want to lure them closer. Room was clean and bed comfortable. We had a balcony. Restaurant was good with a fairly large menu. Closed for last orders around 8pm.
Some rooms are infested with bugs. Breakfast is the same every single day.
We did the river trips and stayed for 2 nights The whole experience was amazing. We booked with River Junkie The hotel is laid back and relaxed. The layout is attractive, colonial rooms, well spaced out with balconies overlooking the river, comfortable beds with good linen. Great bathroom, large bedroom tastefully decorated Good food, met many lovely guests. Our guide, Azrol was informative and knowledgeable, saw most of the big five, just not Orangutans😢 I would really recommend this place
Loved the jungle setting and thd boardwalks between buildings taking you across the various lakes on the complex. Rooms themselves though a little "tired". Resort had more of a backpacker feel to it than a resort, but location great and easy walking distance to the Orang Utan centre and Sun Bear centre. A little frustrating that the restaurant area closes so early (9pm with last orders at 8.30pm) as this meant we were a bit stuck when comjng back from the nightwalk at the Rainforest Discovery Centre.
The grounds are amazing but the overall proterty really needs some TLC. Room look old, beds hard, swimming pool is a bit dirty and water not very clear. The service is ok and staff friendly.
Rooms a good size and staff helpful
It's a bit past its prime, but has got hot water, aircon and the food is lovely.
Nothing much around here. Conveniently near the Orangutan and Sunbear sanctuaries. The staff at the front desk were sometimes helpful. The restaurant staff were less so. The WIFI for the rooms is terrible.
Good value
Good location, set in landscaped jungle. Comfortable and good value for money.
Convenient location for orangutan reserve
Set in large parkland, the hotel looks a bit worn, but still offers a pleasant stay at a reasonable price. Breakfast was not great, though.
The staff were very helpful and obliging. The owner however has a few too many rules, and I felt like I was in a military boarding school at times. Overall however, my stay was very good.
Just ok
My room smelt horribly and they used a freshener to try to cover it up. Bed was just okay, a/c was so far from the bed, it was kind of ineffective. The restaurant and breakfast was great though.
Pleasant stay
Much better than the website photos
Lovely welcome, friendly staff. Convenient walking distance to Sepilok. Breakfast had choice of few options, but toaster needs replaced! A good stay thank you.
home from home
The location was very good for us and the pool facilities were pleasing
I recommend!
A beautiful resort set in the jungle. Good breakfast, possibility of purchasing other meals, close to tourist attractions.
We loved it here. I was really worried about bugs, but there was no need. Everything was so nice and clean. Bonus was a good restaurant. The grounds were beautiful.
Great value in Sepilok
Stayed for 3 nights at the Seilok Jungle Resort and had a really good time. Staff are friendly and helpful and the hotel has the best location for visiting the attractions in Sepilok. Our room was comfortable, although mosquito nets for the beds would have been good, as there is plenty of wildlife onsite! Breakfast was substantial and the onsite restaurant offers a good range of options for evening meal. The pool is a bonus and very welcome after a hot day in the rainforest. Value for money is excellent, making this a great option for a stay in Sepilok.
Orangutan sanctuary and sun bear sanctuary were in walking distance from our resort, which was great. It allowed us to spend the whole day there. A must place to stay to see the orangutans.
This property has the most beautiful location & surroundings - outdoor restaurant is great! rooms fairly average but clean
Lovely setting, crossing bridges over ponds to get to rooms but an alternative route can be taken if you have suitcases. All staff were friendly and helpful. So close to the orangutan and sunbear sanctuary. Lovely meals at good prices.
Pretty gardens. Run down buildings in need of repair. I feel unsafe on many of the timber walkways.
Great location for the sanctuaries. Lovely swimming pool. Friendly staff. Breakfast was dreadful as otgers said. Could really do with a fridge in the room. Whole resort is in need of refurbishment
Great value hotel.
This is a great value hotel, it’s a little tired around the edges and needs some updating, but the staff and service more than make up for this. I read some reviews about the food not being so good but we found it lovely particularly the traditional Malaysian food, who wants chicken nuggets anyway in Borneo!!! There is loads of wildlife to see in the grounds alone and lots to do in the area. We stayed 4 days and did everything we wanted as well as some downtime round the pool (which does need some updating/maintenance).
Amazing Stay. Highly Recommend
The hotel is very nice for a jungle resort and the rooms are cleaned daily. We stayed in one of the superior rooms and the A/C worked very well. The food is excellent at the hotel and they have beer and wine too. Service is amazing and we even saw monkeys on the property in the middle of the day. Pool is nice when it’s not raining and it’s an easy walk to the orangutan and sun bear sanctuaries. The wifi is also surprisingly very fast, I was getting 60-80mb on average. Definitely would recommend this place.
NIce setting, terrible rooms, terrible bathrooms. Food was "edible" Staff were nice
Very nice gardens. Staff very helpful and friendly. Property a little dated but comfortable. Close to attractions.
Nice nature beauty. We liked. Staff nice and helpful.
I don't want to go home!
This is the place to stay in Sepilok if you are after accommodation that is the closest to the local culture and nature. While the resort is definitely showing its age, out of the 3 resorts within a couple of minutes walking distance of the Orangutan and Sun Bears, this is the most down to earth. I found the adjoining resorts to be more catered to Western tastes and comforts where as SJR is more grass roots. The resort grounds are beautiful and are engulfed by the forest providing an immersive experience while not sacrificing on general comforts. Plenty of wildlife occupies the grounds with monitor lizards, snakes, geckos / skinks and a broad range of bird life seen. The age of the resort and its condition add to the natural feel and this is the only resort with a decent pool (one other resort has what I would call a wading pool). The staff keep the pool area and water remarkably clean and the pool was larger than photos may indicate. Meals at the resort cater to both local and Western cuisine and are priced very reasonably with enough variety to feed us happily for 6 nights. At the time of our stay the resort appeared to be very much impacted by the slow return to normal after COVID (Sep 2022) and the poolside Cafe was not operational however, the Banana Cafe was a a great communal area to engage with 'pet' turtles and fish and share a laugh with fellow travellers. Staff are warm and good natured and accommodating. Recommend a deluxe room with balcony.
Swimming pool 😀😀
Great hotel near to Orangutans 🦧 Thank you Shasha and team for the best stay ❤️❤️❤️ Good food Lovely pool Jungle surround
Perfect location and a fabulous pool
We really liked this resort and the location was perfect right next to the fabulous Orang Utan and Sun Bear rehabilitation centres as well as just a short walk to the equally interesting rain forest discovery centre. Quiet if slightly tired, spacious rooms and restaurant set in wonderful gardens, great breakfast and service throughout. Absolutely loved the pool, close your eyes and it felt like a wild swim in the jungle. Would recommend,
Comfortable and Clean
Even though the rooms are a little dated they are quite spacious and comfortable, the pool is great however the chairs are quite worn. The staff are very nice and helpful. In general we found it a good value for the money.
Great location next to the jungle and very close to orangutans and sun bears. Good restaurant and swimming pool. The room TV was poor and the reception said someone would look at it but no one came. The staff a bit lazy.
Loved the location and the whole feeling of being surrounded by nature. Would definitely recommend it. Didn't like that the tours on your little brochure had supplements for single travellers. If the tour is going anyway why charge extra for a single person? I felt it is a total con.
Beautiful surroundings and excellent location for sepilok orangutan rehabilitation centre and sunbear centre. Unique setting in the jungle and comfortable rooms. Easy check in and friendly staff. Would definitely recommend!
Staying here was a great experience as we were surrounded by jungle with boardwalks to the cafe where we could buy inexpensive, simple meals and take our breakfast. Simple rooms that suited the environment. Serviced to a high standard each day. Very helpful staff. It was relaxed and perfect for experiencing the Sabah jungle and very close to the Sepilok orangutan rehabilitation centre and sun bear sanctuary. We had a great few days.
We love this place
This was our second visit here. In the 9 years since we were here last many additions and improvements have been made and we thoroughly enjoyed our trip again. The internet in the rooms got a little loopy, but was still acceptable. The general availability of Internet access was excellent overall, considering we are in the middle of a jungle!! A great feature is the proximity to the main attractions, Orangutan rehabilitation center, Sun Bear conservation and RDC rainforest discovery center. Excellent breakfast as well. We really love this place. The people off course are sweethearts.
dead dog feet from dining area
The place was dilapidated and completely filthy. Unbeknownst to us, the front desk closed at 6, so when we arrived for check-in we were totally lost. Ended up checking in at the restaurant thanks to the aid of our taxi driver. The worst part was while walking before breakfast, we stumbled upon a dead, almost mummified dog only feet away from the restaurant. It had obviously been there for weeks. We let staff know and they brushed it off and it seemed like they were very aware that it was. It was literally only an inch or two from the main path, and we watched staff walk by it repeatedly. It was extremely unsanitary. We checked out a day early with no refund, and were happy to lose that money if it meant not spending another night there.
This property is in a good location for getting to the orangutan and sun bear rehabilitation centers. It has an interesting lay out with wooden walkways in wooded areas but much of the wood had deteriorated and was rotten in places so you need to watch your step. Even though the property seems old and in need of maintainence the pool is great and was a welcome break after a long day of travel. The resteraunt is also outstanding (but be sure to wear insect repellant since it is outdoors). Check in was the worst. After waiting for the room to be ready I was told it was ready and tried to proceed down the hall with my luggage. The hall was completely blocked with a huge pile of laundry. I pushed enough aside to make a path to my room but found the door open and that cleaning from the last guest hadn’t yet started even though it was late afternoon. Getting into the room was a long, frustrating process and the place definitely seems run down and past its prime but over all I was glad I stayed there. Seeing a monkey on my way to the pool and hearing birds throughout my stay were really nice. I recommend this place but people considering staying here should know that neither the facilities or service are top of the line.
Very big and beautiful property right next to the rainforest. We would like to come again!
Fantastic
Great service, had everything I needed.
Beautiful gardens with lots of birds. Refreshing pool. Done things a bit outdated.
Perfect stay!
This place is fantastic! The rooms are spacious and beautiful, and the property is a dream come true. The staff, especially Shasha, is amazing! They are all so helpful, but he really goes above and beyond to assist the guests. The owner John has done a superb job with the place, and he is a really interesting man to talk to. After my 3 nights here, I stayed at their sister property on the Kinabatangan River, and it was also excellent. Everything about this stay was perfect. I only wish I had stayed longer!
Beautiful resort
Great hotel next to OrangUtans
very close to the orangutan centre, lovely setting (felt like a jungle hotel). Restaurant had great food and lovely view. Rooms were a little dated, but clean and comfortable. Staff was friendly!
Very convenient for the orangutans, nice little roadside eatery between orangutans and resort. Pool great. Restaurant a bit dated.
6 nights of wonderful
Loved my 6 night stay. Yes, the place is older and somewhat dated but I thoroughly enjoyed staying here. The AC and Wifi worked great. Food at the Banana Cafe very good. Breakfast was suffice. Staff was wonderful. You can stay at other places nearby for more money but I mainly picked The Sepilok Jungle Resort because it offered a swimming pool, which was amazing and a great way to cool down after a day exploring. The grounds and gardens and elevated walkways are beautiful. I will stay here again.
Amazing setting but a bit tired
Stayed for three nights. Amazing setting and location near to orangutan and sunbear sancturaries. Had the upgrade rooms with a veranda overlooking the rainforest . Loved that. Staff were amazing and evening food although limited was good. But breakfast was a real disappointment, we struggled to eat anything much. Loved the walk ways between the buildings, amazing setting and atmosphere, but not practical for people withis a great base for a couple of days in a great setting. Overall it’s a great place and amazing value for money .
Lovely place right near the orangutan sanctuary
We picked here due to how close it was to Sepilok Orangutan sanctuary and it didn't disappoint, less than a 5 minute walk away. Whilst parts were a little run down and the rooms were on the basic side it had everything you needed and the service was very good. The pool area is lovely and great to cool down in. The food in the restaurant was very good and good value. If you're staying a few days then try eating at Mama Watts which is on the way to the Orangutans, big portions, delicious food and very cheap.
Jungle
We loved the place, the jungle, the food, the pool, the room, the service. The cook gave guided night walks to see local wildlife if you asked him.
Near Orangutan Sanctuary
Lucky to be there for Chinese New Year. Given lucky money and free lunch together with leaping Chinese Lion dancers. Great swimming pool. Altogether good stay and charming people. David
Nice place with great pool
After seeing a few negative reviews we didn't initially stay here, but couldn't stay an extra night at the forest edge resort so transferred here for our second night. Actually we were very happy - the room was very clean and comfortable, and we really enjoyed the pool. OK not as fancy as the chalets at forest edge, but for significantly lower cost, I think this is a great option. Great location very close to the conservation centres. Staff were very friendly and helpful. I would recommend this place, and would happily stay again.
Good place, staff needs training
Lovely place, restaurant staff completely useless as all they do is play with their phones
Sepilok.. se-moment
it was by far the best room I've had after road tripping and camping sabah for more than a week. The staff, the pool, nature all around n a balcony... perfect stay. Thank you SJR.
Great place to stay in Borneo
It is a great jungle retreat where it's possible to see orangutans nearby. The lodge itself is great, too.
Close to Urangutan Centre
Spent one night at Sepilok -enjoyed swimming pool. Close to Urangutan Sanctuary and Honey-bear Sanctuary. Also a pick up point for our trip to Kinabatangan River the following day. Enjoyed sitting in the resataurant looking over waterways,
Great location
Clean rooms and bathrooms with good aircon and hot water. Grounds were pretty with bird life. Food at the restaraunt was okay. Within walking distance to Oranguatan and Sun Bear centers as well as the rain forest discovery center. Staff was friendly.
special place to stay
Even though the hotel looks from the on set that it could do with some refurbishments. It is an amazing place to stay. The surroundings are beautiful and serene. The rooms although tired are clean, the staff are very helpful and friendly and the local resort restaurant provides wonderful local cuisine. Highly recommend for a family place to stay as it is close (walking distance) by some wonderful attractions.
Swimming pool in the jungle !
By jungle lodge standards this hotel is very good. Decent sized room with air con and a good pool in the jungle. Very happy with our stay
A good location but ancient bathrooms.
The staff were friendly and efficient, and the room was clean. The food was alright but not a lot of choice. The bathroom was the worst I've ever seen. I suspect that even when the resort was built several decades ago the washbasin was second-hand!
excellent location
stayed a week. the staff were great. walking distance to the animal sanctuary's
Great location, but a little tired.
Only 5 minutes to Orangutan Sanctuary, Sunbear Sanctuary amd the rainforest discovery centre. Staff very nice and the pool is a real bonus. The hotel grounds are lovely. Rooms are tired and we had some old food left on the floor, which was disappointing. Food in restaurant was pleasant, but again lack of attention to detail (grotty place mats) undermined the good stuff. Overall enjoyed our stay as location is perfect for visiting attractions in this area.
Orangutans
All about the location to see orangutans
Run down needed demolitioning
Arrived at this place got my key looked at room and left.never went in the restaurant as the outside said it all.sun beds needed replacing it was a horrid place and I left my key and walked out. P.s.the bathroom was about 100 year old ancient
Value for money, very quiet location, close to all the sights. Swimming pool is great, breakfast was decent too.
Everything about Sepilok Jungle Resort was great. The resort itself, staff, restaurant and location to animal sanctuaries was fantastic.
Pleasant surroundings
This is a good place to organise excursions from. We had a lovely stay and really appreciated the hotel pool to relax between excursions.
Very suitable for adventure n nature lover because it is in the jungle. Not suitable for family with small babies
Jungle adventure
Hot water heater did not work. Noisy with student groups.
Ok
Overpriced but close to where people want to go. Wifi doesn't work well (which other people have already said) Breakfast is similar to other places, their fuller menu for lunch/dinner is actually decent though, and not too expensive.
Stay in Sepilok
We stayed here because of location to the jungle animals - the property was ok - maybe a little aged but value for money being so close to the animal parks .
Terrible place
Very average nothing to talk about Very old property no maintenance at all Rooms are very old nothing has been renovated in last 20 years . No shampoo or soap . There is a hand wash in the bottle . breakfast is average A/C barely works Wouldn't recommend . there are other properties much nicer Staff is nice
Very average place I wouldn't recommend it
Huge property but no maintenance at all . Rooms are ok nothing to talk about. Breakfast is very average I wouldn't recommend it There are other properties close by They are much nicer
Highly recomended!
i have never given a Hotel review but after my stay at sepilok jungle resort i felt i had to. I loved it! The straff were incredibly nice and helpful, the food was great and the rooms left little to wish for. All for a very good price!
Not a Jungle Resort!
Stayed at Sepilok Jungle Resort for it's proximity to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center. Accommodations were OK but not up to its reputation on Hotels.com. de Luxe room was musty and electricity kept going off--when asleep the aircon would go off and woke up in jungle humidity. Solution was to reset aircon electricity if one was awake or too sweaty. Food was ok but too expensive compared to nearby restaurants or lodges. Also, transportation very expensive. Best feature of SJR was it is 5-minute walk to Orangutan Center.
Nice hotel, surrounded by nature.
We absolutely enjoyed our time at the resort. In the middle of the nature, and birds & wildlife just in front of the door. The food was good, and the staff was friendly, too.
Visit to Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary
I decided to stay at this resort because of the closeness to the Sanctuary, I knew it was in the jungle and I had a somewhat idea, but I expected better. The breakfast was the worst that I have had anywhere in the world, even in a 0 star hotel in India did better than here. The staff never seemed to be that interested when you arrived as sometimes they were more interested in having their own instead. The breakfast consisted on the first day of scrambled eggs baked beans and toast all cold, there was no fruit juices only cold coffee or tea and condensed milk and the second day was a boiled egg that was grey in colour again cold baked beans, toast and 2 very small looking sausages it was awful. The so called satelitte tv was not working, so there was nothing to do as it was raining so heavy we could not even get to the restaurant for dinner and ended up having coffee and biscuits for dinner as thewre was no room service as there was no phone in the room, so the only thing I enjoyed whiI was there was my visit to the orangutans and the sun bears'
Beautiful nature around
This resort has beautiful tropical garden and is located near jungle attractions.
nice little lodge
The room itself was lovely although the hotel restaurant looked a little tired. The shower was good, the bed comfortable, the air-con was good and much needed. The hotel style is lodge with lots of lovely wood and it is only 5 minutes away from the sun bears and orang utans so location perfect. The setting is divine with a lake surrounded by wonderful trees and the swimming pool is a good size and very refreshing. It was good value for the money and an added extra was the beautiful kingfisher at breakfast time.
Great location.
Location was excellent. Pool was a bonus. Staff were very friendly and helpful at all times
Never again
I had a superior room, the room had cracks in the wall that you put your hand in. Ants in the bed at night. Air con was poor. Wifi good. To far to restaurant. When I got there for breakfast, after seeing a baby cobra, all meat and fruit gone so had egg, baked bean and toast. Bottle water 5 ringgit, top of road 2 ringgit. Good points. Very close to monkeys and bears.
friendly feel
is a little run down but clean and in a wonderful setting, staff were great, location terrific would definitely recommend.
Amazing location, definitely recommend
Stayed here for four nights, very well priced, comfortable room and bed, free breakfast, air conditioner worked really well and great service in reception and at the banana cafe. The location is really good for the Orangutans, rainforest centre and sun bears, but if you want to go anywhere else taxis will take you for fairly cheap. Don't have anything bad to say about my stay at all :) very enjoyable, definitely reccomend if you're staying in sandakan area of sabah
Perfect to see the orangutan
Staff was friendly. Breakfast was ordinary but location is perfect to see orangutan.
Tired and requires lots of work
Close proximity to the orangutan sanctuary therefore excellent location in this regard. It is massive but only had a handful of guests when we stayed - perhaps lost clientele due to its conditions. Lots of unused/ abandoned areas. Walkway requires work to ensure safety. Food uninteresting and expensive. Only highlight is the pool but it closes at 5.30 pm. Staff on site are more concerned that guests pay for use of pool rather than paying attention to safety and cleanliness of pool. Huge potential if developped correctly. We were disappointed.
Nice hotel in beautiful garden.
Traveling in Borneo I spent I night in this hotel. Hotel is located in beautiful garden . Hotel itself is not new but room was very comfortable with wireless internet in the room as promised.
Excellent location for orang utan sanctuary.
Simple but good value for money.
very bad stay
We stay at Sepilok Jungle Resort for a night,It near Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary,it is a advance.Except the location, nothing worth to stay there,it 20 km away from sandakan airport,it will takes you RM40 to get there by a taxi . when we arrived the resort,no bellman,no wellcome drinking, nothing.the facility in room is ok,towel hot water,AC etc.the TV is a very small antique tv,I am thinking whether it can be turn on? It's too late to find a staff in reception to change room when we find molded sheet on the under layer. its over 9PM.but you cannot find any staff in recepion desk. The high light of my experience is the taxi booking, you cannot find any taxi on the way to sepilok but i will leave the next morning. I had to book a taxi from the recepionist she called and ask me to pay rm20 cash in advance and arrange the taxi pickup in fron of the resort the next 7am.she give me a receipt of rm20.And she said the restaurant(Banana Cafe) will prepare a breakfast for us to takeaway. But the next morning ,no taxi ,no breakfast,no receipionist, even ca not find a staff in Banana Cafe! In a hurry,we have to find a local car to tranport us out of sepilok junction. If you are interest in rainforest, never chose Sepilok Jungle Resort.there is a Sepilok nature Resort opposite the road ,its quite nice in environment and seivice is good,we had a decent supper in that hotel.
Night in the jungle
Sepilok Jungle Resort is great, wonderful grounds with walkways and bridges to swimming pool, restaurant, ect. Lush jungle setting couldn't be more beautiful. Walking distance to orangang center. The desk can set up up with any tour or trans you my need. The pool is great. Good value and close to the action no need to go back to sandakan every night.
Jungle vs Nature
Important to remember: Sepilok Nature Resort is the place to stay; not the "Jungle" hellhole we mistakenly booked. It was so bad we couldn't believe we actually did this booking
Close to Sepilok and local attractions
Surprise package. Not 5 star but I was impressed. We even had one of the local orangutans visit on our verandah to get out of the rain. Special treat indeed. Food was pretty good and staff friendly enough
jungle resort outdated
We stayed at the resort for a few nights to go to sepilok etc. Generally we found the service to be poor and staff did the minimal they needed to especially within the eating area which we found unpleasant and rude staff who sat around on their phones and could not handle many tables at once. Food was generally poor and we preferred to eat at the nest in forest edge resort which was all round lovely by comparison. The resort has potential but its old and tired now and it needs a revamp and the staff remotivated, its obvious that there is no clear manager around to lead.
Basic jungle resort close to Sepilok.
This place could be fabulous but it really needs some tlc. The pool area is lovely but the Banana Cafe, the only refreshment area open, needs updating and the food generally needs to be improved. Breakfast extremely basic - not even any juice on offer. If you ask for laundry to be done make sure you are specific if you want it dried - ours was returned in the evening dripping wet in a bag - if they had slung it over a chair it would have dried! Overall we were not impressed by anything except the closeness to the Sepilok centre and the pool. The gardens are lovely too.
Wonderful Borneo jungle experience
We were prepared to camp it out a bit at this hotel given the area and price but we were pleasantly surprised. After a monthlong vacation of staying in hotels all over Malaysia, this was one of our favourites. We had 2 rooms for 4 of us and they were charming, comfortable and clean. The hotel grounds are lovely - the walk over bridges to get to breakfast puts you right into the Borneo jungle experience. Staff members are friendly and efficient and made our stay a pleasure. The nearby Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary is a 2-minute walk away and the night walk to spot nocturnal creatures there is highly recommended. A fantastic experience!
Very friendly staff. The resort need proper management and renovation.
Facilities: Nice ; Value: Affordable; Service: Friendly; Cleanliness: Pleasant;
Ideal for visiting the Sepilok sanctuary
Located 5 minutes walk from the Sepilok sanctuary, this is an ideal location to stay to see the orangutans. Rooms were clean, tidy and well maintained. Food was good, if slightly pricey. The hotel grounds are lovely and staff were very helpful.

Great place to stay!
Great accommodation with nice pool. Superior room definitely worth it vs standard
