Ryokan Asunaro is truly something special. Loved staying here. Beautiful property with indoor onsen to enjoy, about s 10-minute walk from historic Takayama streets. Service was fantastic and the food delicious.
Had an amazing stay at this authentic ryokan. The staff is very attentive to all of your needs. The rooms are clean and comfortable and the food is outstanding. We had the traditional dinner and it was one of the best meals I’ve ever had right down to the presentation.
Charming Ryokan!
A beautiful, home-like ryokan that's a bit quirky but still traditional. The family who runs it is delightful and helpful. Very conveniently located -- about a 10-minute walk from the old town. You can't go wrong staying here!
Excellent
Excellent service in a beautiful and cosy Ryokan
Wonderful experience. The food was amazing and the onsen was perfect after a long day of walking
I like the size of the room, layout, nostalgia of the ryokan. The Japanese Kaiseki meal and breakfast was very good.enjoyed our stay!
The room was very large, comfortable, and well decorated. The staff provided excellent service. For example, with another guest accidentally took our umbrella from a common storage area, staff drove us to a store and purchased a replacement umbrella for us. We could not have asked for more. The ryokan was within walking distance of the train station and the old town area. The breakfast was well prepared with a good variety for both the Japanese and Western Style offerings. We are very glad we stayed at Ryokan Asunaro and will recommend it to anyone planning to stay in Takayama.
This is my second time staying at this ryokan. Overall, it is such an enjoyable experience of the Japanese ryokan hospitality. The breakfast presentation is incredible as well.
This was an incredible experience! The service was fantastic, the onsen experience great and the food really good! Would absolutely stay here again!
Great location and traditional amenities.
We enjoyed our stay and the hotel staff could not have been more helpful (particularly reception). We very much enjoyed taking advantage of the Onsen! We paid extra for the evening dining experience which was not universally appreciated by our teenagers - but was a very interesting opportunity to appreciate a Kaiseki style meal.
great staff
The staff were very nice, thoughtful and helpful. They spoke some English and were very welcoming. It was a treat to stay on a Ryokan with the interesting traditions. We enjoyed our stay very much
Amazing experience. Amazing staff!
Will come back stay again
Property was very well taken care of. Service was extraordinary and we felt very taken care of.
Lovely looking traditional Ryokan with an indoor Onsen. Was a very pleasant stay in an authentic Japanese Ryokan. Would recommend.
We enjoyed our stay very much. The building and facilities have a great sense of genuine traditional style with just enough modern amenities. The room was clean and spacious and the service was excellent. I highly recommend the traditional Japanese breakfast.
It was an amazing experience in Takatama. We highly recommend it.
It was a very nice inn. There was a large selection of Yucatán (kimonos) and we were able to take some great pictures, making our trip a memorable one and for that we thank you. The food was also very delicious. It was the first day of the New Year and there seemed to be many guests, but it was very quiet. I enjoyed talking with the staff and learning about Takayama, which made me like Takayama even more.
By far one of the best Ryokan in the region! Staff spoken English well and not many tooms so feels very exclusive and the meals were excellent. Staff very warm and friendly. We will come back to this Ryokan again.
Incredible stay. Breakfast was amazing and the room was incredibly spacious.
The staff were so personable and helpful.
Excellent property and staff. Water temperature in public bath not hot enough. Kaiseki dinner quality a bit pricy and off standard.
Excellent location with parking. We were greeted at entrance and check-in was efficient. Room decor was amazing. Service was very good.
Fabulous ryokan-wonderful property, staff and location. The Kaiseki dinner was incredible.
The staff were very friendly and the property was interesting. However, the latest time for breakfast was 8 am which we thought was rather early. We booked a Japanese (futon) bedroom but it was quite hard for our liking.
Great Location and Service
After spending a week in tokyo and nagoya takayama is a very nice break from the city. This rayokan is just 8min walk from takayama station and within minutes walk to the morning market and quaint old town. They maybe a traditional rayokan but their service is top notch and highly recommend to have their breakfast and dinner. In house onsen also available. Highly recommended.
This Ryokan attempts to be traditional, but unfortunately we found it to be too westernized with signs everywhere explaining how it works, and mostly what not to do. It felt anything but authentic. The onsen is available only during set hours and the Japanese breakfast didn't taste as nearly good as other Ryokans we have stayed. Our room was above the lobby/office and the noise woke us up at 5:00am and kept us up until 11:00 pm. Do not plan to stay out late, as there is an 11:00 curfew when the staff leaves and they lock the doors.
Great hotel. We tried the dinner and while it is not cheap, it is totally worth it. We had great food over 2 weeks but that dinner was probably the best meal we had. They also let you use yukatas in the hotel and the facilities and rooms are very nice.
This place was a real find, and a highlight of our trip to Japan. A real Ryokan with all the trimmings. A 20 minute walk from the station, but very well located for walks to all parts of Takayama. The room was large with a great deal of storage. Very Japanese (you sleep on the floor). The lobby area was fascinating. It also had onsens, which were very good. As an aside, this area has Hida beef, this is available in very good restaurants round about - a culinary highpoint
Last stay of our tour - to be fair property was a little disappointing situated next to a coach park on the edge of the middle of town. Service was a bit brusque. No smile or warm welcome on arrival but a request for passports and further 8000 JPY for spa. Then a list of rules and told of 11pm curfew. Room was traditional and clean, mats were comfortable. Very convenient location from old town but compared to the other places we stayed a little underwhelmed . Nothing wrong with it though but expensive for what you got . On departure Owner messed with the booking for taxis to the station so he took us the 1.5 km himself and refused payment which was a nice touch and redeemed our check in experience .
Beautiful place. Kind hosts. Wonderful dinner and breakfasts.
Wonderful traditional Japanese inn in the heart of Takayama. Amazing meals and quick walk to the sights.
This was a wonderful stay…wish we could have stayed another night!
Lovely family run Ryocan, close to all the attractions. Very nice traditional dinner and breasfast.
Asunaro felt old and modern at the same time. The bath was hot and relaxing and the Japanese breakfast was tasty. I love the decations in the little alcoves down the hallways and the entrance and lobby is beautiful. It is fairly conveneint to the dtation and historic area but it is a bit of a walk. The hosts were welcoming and helpful. I would stay again!
This beautiful ryokan was honestly perfect to me. First of all, the staff were incredibly nice and helpful, amazing hospitality!! The building itself, while having all the appearance of a traditional Japanese ryokan is extremely well kept and the facilities are of the highest quality. The room was simply beautiful with many amenities, and even a little tea drinking nook with a view of the city. The onsen was lovely as well. Everything was extremely clean and comfortable, and food was SUPERB. I would come back without hesitation. It has very very high value for the price I paid. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Clean and friendly
Very friendly staff. An excellent way to experience a ryokan in Takayama.
For experience a ryokan this is a good place to stay. Clean and friendly environment. Google for the best food in town better then listen to the recommendations by the owner.
Pretty much satisfactory overall. Highly recommended.
A great ryokan and the staff was amazing. The onsen experience was also incredible
Great mom and pop ryokan!
We had a great ryokan experience. Service was warm and friendly. There is also an indoor onsen, which is a nice bonus. We only had the breakfast option, which was great. Location was great since it was just a short walk to the train station and also to the old town area.
Very courteous and welcoming owners. Lovely stay!
A taste of old Japan with Comfort
We were a family of six with one of the children on a wheelchair. I was a bit disappointed with their firm attitude upon arrival that the Ryokan was not barrier-free and we had to use their adult size wheelchair as communicated at the time of booking. Of course, it made a perfect sense to separate the one for outside and inside especially at a Ryokan but it was the way they said it that upset me a little. However, that was the only small disappointment and the rest went very well. The owners work hard to make sure the guests enjoy the stay. They gave us two rooms and the room they suggested our daughter to be in was bigger than the other and had less steps to the bathroom within. They also gave us one hour of family bath time in order to make bathing our daughter more comfortable and easier. They said they could afford to do it as it was not a busy time. Asunaro provides Yukata bathrobes like every Ryokan does but they have a variety of sizes and designs for us to choose from and are available to purchase at reasonable prices. The Onsen is clean and the water is not too hot, more suitable for non Japanese like my husband. The Ryokan is equipped with a laundry room, too, which works efficiently. If a guest enjoys reading books in Japanese, one could easily extend the stay for a long time. We had delicious breakfast in comfort (chairs). It was raining when we left and they kindly offered to take some of us and the bags to the station in their car. Amazing.
Staff are friendly, polite & very helpful. Location is excellent - walkable to the Old Town, sight-seeing places ,restaurants & morning markets. Had very enjoyable 2 nights there. Will definitely recommend to friends & families
If is a charming traditional Japanese inn in Takayama. It’s location is very convenient for walking to the train station and the main tourist area, but it is situated on a quiet side street. The staff was very friendly. The Japanese breakfast was excellent. We were given kimonos to wear. A very authentic experience.
Excellent and highly recommended
Our second stay in this hotel Ryokan. Service and food still uphold very high standard. Owner and staff hospitable, room extremely clean and comfortable. Hotel is tastefully decorated. Simply fantastic. Highly recommended. From Amy
Great Japanese Inn like setting. Spot clean and very helpful staff.
Fantastic ryokan in beautiful Takayama
Fantastic place, the most authentic ryokan we stayed during our time in Japan - we visited other two in the area, but maybe because of the smaller size this was the closest to a traditional Japanese experience as I had imagined it. The food was fantastic too, both dinner and breakfast. Nice touch that they provide yukatas to the guests, adds charm to the place. Would definitely recommend.
Amazing Japanese experience.
Beautiful place, lovely people and great location. We spent only one day in Takayama and feel we should have stayed another one just for this Ryokan. Defiantly the best experience we’ve had in Japan.
Walking distance to all major attractions. Free drinks in refrigerator, which is very unusual. Nice old Japanese room.Great service.
Amazing attention to detail and lovely helpful staff.
Hermosa experiencia, el personal habla inglés y explica todo con claridad, son super atentos. El desayuno tradicional es muy recomendable.
This was a great experience! From walking into the inn and changing into slippers to the robes we picked out to wear around the onsen and the property and the rooms with futons on the floor and sliding screens - it was lovely. And make sure you order the Japanese breakfast!\
Underwhelmed & overpriced - but don't be put off
Nice staff, good service. We spent a small fortune for one room, and dinner & breakfast for four people. The sleeping area was under the A/C unit which we (our fault, but English instructions would have helped) could not figure out how to turn off, so we slept poorly under a chilly breeze! The food was - I am so sorry - really unpleasant. We had the Hida Beef dinner option. We spent 2 weeks touring the country and had always had excellent local food, including at other ryokans, but this was the only place where we struggled to eat the food. We tend to embrace food (we enjoyed fish head stew at another ryokan!) but the food served here was unlike anything else. Just a couple of slices of boiled beef. Also, the Onsen was pretty basic. For the price we paid - almost £650 - it was a disappointing experience, I'm afraid. Nice staff though, very sweet people. If you pay the right price it won't be such a disappointment.
This family run ryokan is one of the best places we stayed at in Japan. The place was very homely and Mr. Massa and his family and staff were very friendly and respectable. They essentially treated us like a long lost friend. They accommodated our request to have a Japanese style breakfast without beef. Breakfast itself had quite a few varieties and was good. The rooms we were given were spacious and clean. Slept on futons in typical ryokan style and we were able to sleep quite well. The main floor is decorated with Japanese artifacts and looks like a museum. Very interesting old and hand crafted items. Walkable distance from Takayama station and quite a few restaurants close by.
First time I have stayed in a Ryokan and it didn’t disappoint. Friendly service, beautiful building, and great food.
We had an awesome experience stay here, would highly recommend
Unique character property Meals felt a little rushed not the ryokan degustation we’ve had before
Amazing Ryokan
Amazing Ryokan, very nice and welcoming people and in a very good location, close to many restaurants and good access to the train station.
Family run great Ryokan.
Lovely family run Ryokan. Owners could not have been nicer or more helpful. Just wish we could have stayed longer.
Perfect Ryokan Stay and Dinner Experience
Everything was perfect including the Kaiseki dinner. Even though it was quite expensive but it's an experience that we really never regretted.
Asunaro
Exceptional in every single detail you can enjoy a true japanese ryokan
Excellent ryokan with friendly staff and good facilities
Excellent first experience at a Ryokan. Lovely warm owners, nice basic rooms. Bathrooms are ordinary but you are expected to use the Onsen which is good. Definitely do the Japanese dinner they offer - was the most expensive meal we had in japan but worth it. About 10 small courses I think. Breakfasts are good with a choice of western or Japanese - we did one of each. Easy walk from the train station and then to the main tourist areas.
A relaxing experience.
Amazing family run hotel with lovely Japnese traditional decorations and well-maintained facilities and room. Eveything is clean and tidy, staffs are welcoming and nice. Love it so much.
Most wonderful people, terrific food and service, a real delight-- loved every minute there
It was an amazing stay! Good experience of local stay with onsen. Staff was friendly and Japanese breakfast and dinner was good! Clean place.
Friendly staff beautiful Ryokan
We really enjoyed our satay here. The family that own the Ryokan are very friendly and helpful. On arrival we were sat down with a cup of roasted green tea whilst we go completed our documents. We were given Komono to choose from to wear in the hotel (optional). We had the largest room which was beautiful surrounded by paper screens and a view to the small garden. We both founding sleeping on the floor tough going to be honest so I wouldn’t reccomend it for more than a night or two. However I made use of the Onsen twice and found that soon soothed away any aches. The breakfast was Japanese style also and was beautifully presented. The staff helped us book a local restaurant for the previous evening which we really appreciated. I would really recommend a stay here for a night or two if your after the authentic Japense experience.
Hugely welcoming when you arrive. The staff are lovely and the hotel is spotless. We had breakfast (Japanese both days) and a dinner here, which was all superb. The hot bath is really well set up too. Hotel is between the station and old town, so a perfect location.
True Japanese experience Onsen( hot spring), Dadami, meals And hospitality we’re excellent Even owner gave us a ride to the station when he found no taxi was avail I strongly recommend if some one wants to know Japanese house and food
Thé best 3stars hotel i’ve expérienced in Japan . Value for money !!
Great stay at traditional Japanese ryokan. Staff was very helpful in providing directions. Great food!
Very convenient to station and Festival sites. The staff were fantastic, even taking us ti a restaurant we mistakenly thought was closed. Traditional, yet relaxed and casual.. The in house onsen a bonus.
a magical experience
The first impression made my heart leap, I knew I'd done well to choose this accommodation. I dreamed of a Japanese countryside experience just like this, such a warm welcome and such a beautiful ryokan. The rooms were gorgeous, very traditional but with a discreet large TV, locally made furniture in a sitting area which you can pull sliding doors to block off from the low dining table and floor seating chairs and futons, lighting you can alter the mood off, haberdashery, free drinks, choose your own yukata style, slippers, shoe drying service-- I don't know where to stop! The location is perfect too, the town is gorgeous, a must visit. And a spectacular vegetarian traditionally Japanese breakfast feast complete with hoba miso cooked by us ourselves at the table, bubbling over a magnolia leaf lit from below as it sits on a traditional cooking device. Book now, go go go! Worth every penny and it will make your heart soar to have a Takayama experience done properly, and wait for the regional TV. The world outside of culturally rich and proud Japan just does not exist. There's an onsen onsite very quiet and organised with therapeutic volcanic hot spring water to sit in and soothe the skin and muscles, your whole being, so don't be shy and do that too. They have a lot of marked maps already printed up and a comprehensive folder of recommended local eateries for vegetarians too. They gave us a farewell-thank you present when we left too! I wanted to cry I was so happy.
I was disappointed from the food
A lovely Japanese experience!
Great location! Enjoyed the use of their free bikes. Such an easy way to cruise around Takayama. Customer service was excellent. The ryokan is decorated with beautiful Japanese antiques. Would absolutely recommend to my friends to enjoy a lovely Japanese experience!
Really positive experience. Staff were excellent. Never did find the free coffee that was advertised (and would have made things truly perfect) but overall this was a delightful, peaceful stay.
Very helpful staff and explained everything clearly in English. Room was clean and well maintained.
Very comfortable
Very friendly and helpful staff who spoke excellent English. Room was traditional style, spacious and clean. We would definitely stay here again.
Really enjoyable stay. We ordered the dinner on our first night and it was excellent and good value for this type of meal. Japanese breakfast had lots of variety. Futons were more comfortable than some we had experienced at other Ryokans. The onsen was very pleasant.
Needs better service
The place was as expected: clean, quiet, small, japanese style ryokan. Good for the “japanese experience”. We did have a few issues with service however: 1) the male manager was upset when i asked for coffee at 10:01. He pointed the clock at me saying that checkout was at 10am. 2) he ended serving the coffee but slap me twice in the back when offering it to me. Slaps were hard enough for me to almost yell at the guy. 3) during check out my wife started filling up her water bottle from a big water jug. She was told by a different manager that she wasnt allowed to do so cause we were checking out already. For the price we paid, we would have expected better and friendlier service. Other than that its a nice place
Traditional Japanese Ryokan
Great Japanese ryokan with traditional feel to it. From the moment you enter the ryokan and greeted by the staff, was very welcoming and we enjoyed our stay very much. Looking forward till our next stay at Asunaro.
Great traditional Inn with Onsen, a good location
Great location just off of one of the main shopping areas within Takayama. Walking distance from everything and only a 10 minute walk from the main bus terminal/train station even with suitcases. They even let us leave our bags the day we checked out to save paying for a locker/lugging them around with us. Would definitely stay here again if in Takayama
Beautiful and awesome space! We loved it and great fun:)
Welcoming Ryokan
We arrived at the Ryokan around four in the afternoon. Immediately welcomed with tea and introduced to the place, all in English. The owner has an impressive collection of Hina dolls (japanese dolls) on display. The whole place gives you a truly japanese feeling, very welcoming! Our room was spacious, clean and quiet. When you arrive you can pick your own yukata and wear it for dinner. We loved that. The dinner was great with hida beef, almost too much. We finish the day with the onsen. We definitely would stay again at Ryokan Asunago.
Above and beyond
Over the moon with the fantastic service, wonderful facilities and the gorgeous rooms. The traditional rooms are well kept, clean and very comfortable with lots of space. The staff go well above and beyond to make your stay amazing and are always happy to be a help in enjoying your time. We fell in love the beauty of the old building and were amazed at the level they maintained it. The traditional kaiseki meal is unbelievable and well worth the price. After a wonderful dinner enjoy the quaint serenity of their in house onsen.
Phenomenal experience
This was our home base when we initially arrived in Tokyo by train from the airport. Conveniently located within walking distance to Tokyo Station - Surrounding neighborhood (Marunouchi) is up & coming as a trendy area for shopping & dining, we had a lot of fun exploring this area. From the moment we arrived at the Palace Hotel, we felt highly appreciated and catered to, the staff is amazing and the hotel property is beautiful and elegant. (Secret confession: I was obsessed with how amazing the lobby smelled and this may have been my favorite part of the hotel - Think pink peppercorns and lemongrass - You can actually buy items with this fragrance profile from the hotel). We utilized the lobby restaurant our first evening, and ate the breakfast buffet each morning. The food quality and service was impeccable at every meal & the ambiance in the restaurant was very chic. We swam in the pool early each morning, and the facilities are simple but clean. Nice view from the pool. We also had afternoon tea one day and it was phenomenal. Wonderful bakery on site. Our room was modern, very well tended and had a great bathroom with high quality amenities. Easy access to Tokyo Underground, nice to walk the grounds around the palace gardens also. Will definitely return to this property and will recommend to others.
Good location, great staff
Within easy access to rail station and the city highlights, great ryokan experience, genuine helpful stall, lovely Japanese food, all made for a great stay.
Amazing experience
We had an amazing stay at Ryokan Asunaro! Walking distance from the train/ bus station and the old street. The ryokan even has bicycles which are a good way to explore the town! Dinner and breakfast were sumptious and amazing too. The owner offered us small souvenirs as keepsake, a really sweet gesture. One of our best ryokan experience ever!
Turning Japanese
Our daughter wanted to get in touch with her Japanese root and she did this with a stay here. It reminded me of my child hood home and those of my relatives. We stayed in the original part of the Ryokan which is worth the extra cost for the ambience and authenticity of the experience. The staff are very helpful and everything is well organized. Highly recommded if you want a ryokan experience.
Convenient and Beautiful Ryokan
It is inside Takayama city and easy to find and close to restaurants. The hotel is clean and welcoming. Service is good and there is a coffee machine at lobby for customers' use in the morning since the breakfast room serves Japanese and western style breakfast but without coffee, though I don't know the reason. Upon check-out, each of us was offer a small gift which is a surprise. Highly recommended.
Attention to detail makes for a great experience
We could not have received a warmer welcome at this fantastic family-run ryokan. Although the hotel building is modern, it has many traditional features including an irori fireplace in reception where you can take morning coffee. Throughout the building, there are attractive prints & antiques as well as a selection of craft work on sale. We chose a traditional room for our family of 3 & there was lots of space with an entrance hall, separate toilet & bathroom & a sitting area with its own irori fireplace. We were all provided with yukatas to wear which made us feel very special as we went for dinner. The food was incredible - the presentation & quality of each dish was exquisite & service was excellent. The traditional breakfast was the same - you will need a good appetite! The ladies onsen was a great way to end the day.
Friendly staff, beautiful hotel and pleasant food (though very Japanese)
Outstanding Ryokan in a beautiful Japanese town
Outstanding Ryokan experience. Very authentic. Hotel staff was super friendly and helpful. Breakfast was terrific. Great location - close to train station and easy walking to historic district. Takayama is a beautiful small Japanese town.
Real Japanese Hospitality.
Lovely traditional inn located near train and bus station. Walkable to downtown and all major attractions, though bus nearby best for Hida Folk Village. Breakfast was wonderful and the staff are the most welcoming people you could imagine.
Ryokan Asunaro | Home in Takayama | Travala.com
This was fantastic traditional lodging. Our rooms were spacious and the public bath was an incredibly special extra perk. We were our kimonos and yukatas to the bath. The dining for both dinner and breakfast require reservations and are well worth it. Our only negative experience was the front desk telling us that the restaurant we wanted to eat at did not require a reservation, but discovering upon arrival that reservations are obligatory.
