This review is long overdue! We stayed at Riad Azoulay while in Marrakech last November. Our stay at Riad Azoulay ended up being one of the highlights of our trip to Morocco. Looking back, I wish it had come at the end of our trip instead of the beginning because it was the absolute best place we stayed the entire trip and set the bar almost too high for everywhere else. The Riad and rooms were beautiful, the food was delicious (and very plentiful), but most of all, the staff were all AMAZING. They were all very personable and helpful and patient and we felt almost like we got to know them over the days we stayed. In contrast to our Riad in Fes, which felt more like a hotel, we felt we got a true “Riad” experience here. Additionally, we found the location ideal. We were quite happy to not be in the middle of the main Medina. Instead we were in the spice market which was quieter. We could easily walk to everything and felt very safe even walking at night as there were always lots of people about. If you’ve never been Marrakech, the first time is an experience - we were completely overwhelmed with taking everything in! And trust me on this - I do recommend getting the transport from your train or airport thru the Riad. Everything was seamless and easy - and I can imagine you might have some difficulty finding the Riad, tucked in to a side alley of the spice market, the first time. And let’s just say you get the full experience when they meet you and walk you thru the mark

Absolutely amazing staff, easy check in and beyond accommodating! We forgot the toothpaste in the car which was parked a few minutes walk away. They were so kind to quickly run buy us a tube without us having to go back out. It is the littlest things that are done that make the journey complete. It is a beautiful property, the staff goes over the top to make sure you have a pleasurable stay. It was a pleasant surprise that breakfast was included in our booking. Wish we had more time to stay here. It will forever be a highlight during our time in Maroc. My only wish is everyone finds this space and gets to share in the experience.

Hidden Paradise in the Medina

Everything was perfect chez Azoulay. The owner's warmth, artistic design sense, graciousness is evident in every detail. I treated myself to the royal suite and it was wonderful. Each corner of the spacious apt was well-designed and totally comfortable. The warm staff made me feel at home as a single woman "of a certain age." If you have time, the massage and hammam were so relaxing after a day in the medina. I also took a cooking class with the hotel chef that was a chance to connect in a personal way. Everything went so smoothly, highly recommended!

Wonderful riad in Marrakech!

We absolutely loved our stay at this riad for part of our honeymoon. It’s truly a little slice of paradise amongst the noisy, busy craziness that is Marrakech. The riad is not large and has a pretty open concept with the courtyard and pool being in the middle. That’s probably our only complaint; the noise factor. The hotel plays music starting in the morning until around 10pm, there’s a mosque feet away that will have calls to prayer going at a very early hour and anything you say or do outside your room will be heard by all guests. With that being said, it’s staff were all so friendly, accommodating and helpful. From the moment we checked in and were treated to the traditional mint tea service, to the delicious breakfasts to helping us arrange for rides to the train station etc. Our room was beautiful and clean with comfortable beds. Be aware that this hotel is more like a B&B. There are no tv’s in the rooms. The safe uses an actual key. And there are no locks on the rooms aside from a latch, unless you ask for one. It’s definitely like staying in someone’s home. The Riad even serves home cooked dinners nightly which we tried one evening. The food was so delicious! And the service and attention top notch. Just a wonderful experience overall!

Great stay. An oasis from the hustle of Marakech. I only stayed in one other Moroccan Riad and I can easily say Azoulay was far and above better! Couple notes: The dinner is expensive, but is worth it for at least one or two nights. Try it. The staff are caring and attentive and there is always at least one person on duty who can speak English. I was feeling nauseous as I was checking out and the shift leader made sure to make me a tea to help with it. Keep up the good work and thanks for the kindness.

Only downside is the location Location didn’t feel safe It is in old Marrakesh Walking at night felt very unsafe with cat callers but one staff member walked us to get a taxi on one occasion. He was very nice. The manager refused to allow a staff member permission to collect someone because “transfers were not booked with the riad”. Based on the location of the riad (in the middle of a market), this should be considered in the future. All other stuff members were pleasant.

Good, once the aircon was fixed

Pleasant place to stay on the edges of the Medina. We had dinner one night - very good food and service. Manage expectations - it isn't quite as luxurious as advertised. The swimming pool is more water feature than usable pool (we didn't see anyone in it in 3 nights there. )There are no locks on the room doors - there is a safe in the room. Our only real issue was that the air conditioning was broken when we arrived. All they could offer was a fan - we had a very warm night. The next day we asked again and they (reluctantly) got someone out who fixed it. That aside, I'd recommend it as a place to stay.

When searching for accommodation in Marrakech you’ll be spoilt for choice, but by choosing Riad Azoulay you’ll be spoilt. Located near the spice markets in the Jewish Quarter, the Riad is a short walk to many of the main attractions and a taxi rank. The staff are diligent in their service and operate a kitchen that will keep you full. After being in transit for 40 hours, I arrived at the riad and offered a choice of suites... apparently I had booked the one on the roof. The suite on the roof is warmer due to its external location but the air con is whisper quiet and super effective. Get the rooftop suite and enjoy waking up to views of the Atlas Mountains and often having the whole terrace to yourself.

One of my favorite sights in my trip to Marrakech!

The place is beutiful. I really enjoyed to seat down by the pool, listening to the birds and admire all architectural details of this mansion turned into guest house. Oustanding service, they really make you feel welcome. My room was really spacious, comfortable and, more importantly for me, full of character. Tasty continental breakfast. Inside the Medina, just 5 minute walk from Bahia Palace. After booking, they’ll contact you to ask if you want a transfer from the airport and/or dinner for your first night. I recommend that you get the transfer since the Medina is a maze and nothing is easy to fine there. They will drop you in the main square where someone from the hotel will be waiting for you to walk you to the hotel (the medina is car free).

We really enjoyed our stay here. The extensive rooftop terrace and the interior atrium were very attractive. What made us give a 4 rating instead of 5 included: 1. Breakfasts were meager and uninteresting compared to other riads 2. The riad brags about offering Italian cuisine as well as Moroccan, but when asked about Italian cuisine, they had no menu 3. The 4 person tables near the fireplace were uncomfortably low 4. It took 30 minutes to settle the bill! 5. One of the easy chairs in our room (African suite) was essentially unusable. But still - great location, good service, good facilities, good evening meals.

We were two couples who spent 4 nights at the Riad Azoulay in late October. Unfortunately the weather wasn't great (torrential rain) so we were not able to sit up on the beautiful terrace but this did not stop our enjoyment of every other part of the riad. The manager and staff could not be more welcoming or do enough to help us. The position is great (only 15 mins walk to Jemaa-el-Fnaa) and very close to other tourist spots (Bahia Palace, Saadian Tombs), The riad is extremely tastefully decorated with amazing attention to detail. The manager gave us a phone to use if we needed help whilst out and about. During our stay we also had a cookery lesson. A member of staff took us to the market to buy meat and veg in the morning and then in late afternoon we cooked with Safia (the resident chef) in the riad kitchen (which incidentally is spotless). It was all great fun and when we sat down to dinner later it looked and tasted delicious. Although we had already booked a trip to the Atlas Mountains prior to arriving, the riad have a large folder of trips they recommend and can arrange for you. All in all, I would highly recommend this riad for its position, tasteful decoration, ambiance but most of all for the amazing staff. (PS - yes morning prayer is at 5.00 am and does wake you due to the proximity of the mosque but you are in a Muslim country and there for the whole experience).

Amazing Weekend Visit to Marrakech!

My friends and I traveled to Marrakech for a quick weekend shopping and sightseeing trip. Riad Azoulay was absolutely beautiful and helped us make all of the necessary arrangements before hand to ensure we had a smooth arrival. They set up transfer for us from the airport, which was recently updated and stunning. Our driver met us right outside of the main airport door with a sign and quickly took us right to the Riad. He dropped us off at the nearby square, the taxi's cannot drive into the old city, and someone met us to help us with our bags to the Riad, which was only a 5 min walk. They also helped us set up a cooking class for that night were we all helped prepare our traditional Moroccan dishes. Breakfast was ready for us each morning with made or order eggs, pastries, yogurt, and fresh coffee/tea. We walked the souks during the day and toured the Palace, which was next door. The rooms at the Riad were all different sizes and layouts with sitting areas and large bathrooms. The doors to the bedrooms do not lock but there was a safe in each room with a key. The Riad has only a handful of rooms and they keep the front door locked (you have to ring the bell to get in) so I always felt safe. Overall the Riad Azoulay staff was incredibly nice and accommodating with anything we needed. The old city itself is great to wonder around and all of the shop owners and restaurant workers are friendly and cheery.

Very attentive hosts

It was an amazing experience at Riad Azoulay! Perfectly located, it's right in the middle of the Jewish Quarter and spice market and is close walking distance to everything you'll want to see. They arrange transport from the airport and provide a really lovely welcome reception where they provide you with all of the information you need for your stay. The rooms are beautiful, and the dinner that was served on the evening of our arrival was delicious. Breakfast is really nice, too! Everything is very clean and safe, and everyone there was absolutely amazingly nice and helpful. When we first set out to explore, Abdallah walked with us to show us how to get to the main sites because the little streets are confusing at first. From the time I booked, Massimiliano gave me a very personalized service and was in contact with me regularly before the trip. I highly recommend Read Azoulay!

Good value - clean and comfortable

Nice hotel - good location, quiet, clean, comfortable. Great showers. The food was not varied but was decent. The staff was really, really nice. But not as much hand-holding as I liked. I wasn't shown around when I got there and didn't get to sit down with anyone to go over a map or anything. Once I did inquire, they were helpful. And some, not all, spoke English.

Peace and tranquility in the middle of Marrakesh

Architecturally pleasing, quiet and very well located. It has a wonderful central court yard (with pool) and a roof top where you can relax before and after a day out in the town. Located in spice market and the old Jewish quarter it is easy to get anywhere and everywhere. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful, and I would strongly recommend a night in for dinner. It is almost too comfortable sitting around and relaxing, I had to drag myself out into the maddening crowd, away from the tranquility that Riad Azoulay has to offer.

Beautiful Riad with the best staff!

The Riad was situated in a great location in the old part of the city within walking distance to most attractions. I preferred this part of the city although it was nice to drive through the new part on the way to dinner and check out the huge modern hotels in the new part of the city. The streets were really busy but the Riad was so quiet and peaceful in the centre of all of it! Having the square nearby made it easy to find out way around, get taxis etc. The rooms were beautifully decorated and really spacious (like the rest of the Riad). I think the best thing about staying here was the staff. The were all so helpful and friendly. They went out of their way to help us. For example, my mother in law was ill and nearby pharmacies were closed and they offered to go to the pharmacy after they finished work to get medicine for her. Also, on our last day we had to leave really early but they organised a quick breakfast for us before we left. The breakfast and other food at the Riad was great too. We heard other guests mention that the dinner was the best they had had while in Marrakech and we wish we tried it! We have already recommended this Riad to friends and would definitely stay here again.

We stayed for 5 nights and wish we could have stayed longer. The staff are so attentive and look after the guests really well. Dinner at the Riad is amazing - you get real authentic Moroccan food. The courtyard and the terrace are great places to relax. The rooms are very clean, beautiful and are comfortable. The breakfast is good with a variety of breads, pastries, hot pancakes, yoghurt and fruit. A little carb heavy for us but delicious none-the-less! Thank you for looking after us,we will most definitely be back!

Best experience ever ... a must stay in Marrakech!

Felt like a beautiful dream ... transported back in time to the exotic and authentic setting yet meeting our every comfort and needs by the superb staff lead by Massimiliano. From the moment of our arrival when Mass met us to escort us to the Riad until we left six amazing days later, we have never been so well taken care of. Thank you for so patiently answering all our questions, creating the special dinner of lovely fruit and yogurt for us so late in the evening, squeezing in the best massage ever at the last moment ... just because we asked. The entire Riad so stunning we couldn't stop taking pictures to show off to all our friends back home. Our rooms so comfortable and clean, we didn't want to leave. We've not stopped talking about Riad Azoulay since our return and our friends are already making plans to visit. I may have to join them as I long to be back there ... right now.

Suitable for Vegans too!!

The hotel made every effort for me & my travelling companion. We couldn't fault the service, the spoken English is very good, Massimilliano the owner was very helpful arranging transfers to and from the Airport for 15euros per person per direction and we could pay this by Visa card at the end of our stay. We were given a basic phone with preprogramed emergency numbers and that of the hotel should we have a 'situation' - i.e. be very lost. Though it is easy to find your way around and Massimilliano met us from the taxi drop off point. Breakfast is included, lunch or evening meal is optional but a good price at 25e pp. Large meals too! They understood 95% of our detail with regards to our dietary choices though we did get egg one day and honey the day before. We were catered for very well. The Riad isn't in the countryside so don't expect extreme silence from the outside. It is near a market which closes at around midnight & the area stays busy for a couple more hours. The air conditioning was switched on for us while we were out by the room service which was a welcome relief. Rooms were cool and luxurious. Flower heads were put in the bat robes and by a carefully folded shower mat on the entrance to the shower. Nice touches. There's a key operated safe in each suite also. Minor criticisms, the bolts closing the doors are rustic & authentic but a little clonky. The door to my Junior Suite did not open fully - but I could none the less manage to get in. Expect local taxes.

Safe in the Medina

We ended a 7 day trip through Morocco at this Riad. The staff was so helpful and made us feel right at home. The building has been meticulously rennovated and beautiful wood and furnishings. We especially enjoyed taking our breakfast and dinner on the terrace, where there are pet turtles and storks nesting on the Mosque next door. In all the hustle of the city, it was quite relaxing.

Rob & Chris's Marrakech adventure

Like many Riads the entrance is in a back alley and yet we felt safer here than pretty much anywhere else. There is a Mosque next door. You have to walk through bazaars to get anywhere so be ready to say "no thank you" a lot, and be firm! You have to haggle to buy anything, so have a price ready in your mind before you start. Beware of con men, they're everywhere. If a man says he is a waiter from your hotel, he isn't. If a man wants to take you to where you want to go say no and go your own way. Put a Morocco satnav on your phone. Mine was only £4 and well worth it. Azoulay is a classic riad. Look up the word on Wikipedia to know what they are like. Staff very helpful and service good. Good rooftop terrace and great place for the excellent breakfast. Riads are not hotels, don't expect the full range of facilities.

The Riad you need to stay at!

Before arriving they kindly emailed us asking if we would like a transfer to the Riad (as Marrakech is difficult to navigate as a newbie). Once arriving we were greeted by the friendly staff and made to feel extremely welcome. We given mint tea and a tour, then shown our room, which was immaculate. The room was a lovely balance of Moroccan decor with modern amenities: air conditioning (even though you don't really need it as the Riad is naturally temperate), comfy double bed, roomy wardrobe, great shower and toilet etc) The room was tidied and cleaned daily. The roof terrace was a delight to have breakfast on (which we did most mornings), or lounge in the sun. The atmosphere from the streets below could be heard, but this was charming rather than overwhelming – and could be escaped in the quiet interior courtyard below. There's also a pool that we were invited to cool off in if we wished to, realising it wasn't just a decorative piece. Food and drink was available any time and the staff could not be more helpful. The food was traditional but suited our western taste and was all very fresh and tasty. Dinner was an option offered daily, and it's definitely worth having at least once during your stay! Breakfast offered a great variety, lots to set you up for a busy day. The staff were great with advice for restaurants and must-see places, and if you wished to explore further outside the Medina walls, they would be more than happy to enquire and/or book excursions for you.

Jewel in the Medina

The hotel was a lovely balance of the practical and the authentic. The staff were exceptional, friendly and helpful with good humour. The hotel is not accessible by vehicle as it sits down a tiny alley in The Mellah. On arrival the hotel sent a member of staff to meet our taxi on the nearest road and guided us down the alleyways to the Riad. The hotel is walking distance to all the main attractions in and around the Medina and nestles amongst a myriad of tiny businesses. Some local refurbishment of the spice markets is taking place at the moment a few minutes walk from the Riad so it is interesting to contrast the old and the new.

Perfectness for savvy travellers

Stayed for three nights in Dec/2013, and couldn't imagine a better experience. From the scents and flavors of the food to the comfortable beds, chairs and sofas, the typical morroccan plates, lamps and assorted objects, everything conspires to make you instantly feel in Marrakech. The 5 minute-walk from Place Ferblantiers through the Souk des Epiciers is part of the experience: no tourist trap here, but an authentic local market, catering to locals and visitors alike. This little maze should be negotiated, at least when arriving, with an employee from the hotel, but afterwards I did it on my own many times with pleasure, savouring the smells of the merchandise. A local touch is the muezzin call to prayers, 5 times a day, which woke me up on the first night. Not more than 5 minutes long, but being awakened before dawn can be avoided with earplugs (I did it). I highly recommend the hamman in-house experience, and the Berber masseuse has really strong hands. A few more sessions and I'm sure I'd have overcome my cubicle-generated escoliosis. I'll be back :-)
