It's a very small place with a lovely caretaker and his lovely dog. We loved going out for beach walks accompanied by the super friendly and obedient dog.
Y’all the staff was so nice. I LOVED this property. The beach is directly behind the hotel. The only downfall is because this is an eco hotel, the air only works during certain times. But it was worth the stay and price!
The small parking but the staff was very helpful.
Everything
The entrance is not attractive at all. As long as the price continues to be reasonable. We will come back. Highly recommend beachfront rooms. 3rd floor. Great view.
Playa Canek
Everything was great. It was a very small hotel with beach bar & restaurant. Expect to pay around 100 pesos for a beer and 250 pesos for a cocktail. although I brought my own beer to the beach area. Air conditioner was shut off around 9 AM until 7 PM.. Electricity was shut off for a few hours here, and there during the day, but not all day. The room was very clean and the hot water was excellent with lots of pressure. The nights were very quiet and easy sleeping. The breakfast was just basic with eggs, toast and a little bit of fruit and juice or coffee. The staff was very friendly at all times. And it was an excellent location on the beach, very clean, and there was a man there cleaning up seaweed, but there was hardly any to begin with.(it depends on the time of the year with the seaweed.) I would stay here again.
This is a bare minimum kind of place. Much of the time there will be no internet and often no power. It is difficult to find someone working for the hotel if you have a problem. I'm allergic to mold and had major issues with my asthma and allergies. I paid half through expedia and showed the expedia receipt but they said they never got it. So i had to pay the full price again.
We stayed for 11 nights and had a fantastic time. The hotel is a wonderful place to have a vacation. Paulina in such an amazing hostess. Bruno is a wonderful owner and host. The staff are all super helpful and friendly. This is a small family owned hotel with that special touch. Do not expect all areas to have personnel at all times. But they are easy to find and so very helpful. The access to the beach is perfect. Our room on the third floor was so beautiful with an amazing view of the beach, sunrises and moon rises. We would highly recommend.
Beach vaca
I just had the best time. Drinks and ceviche were great. Sounds of the ocean all night was amazing. Would def return Bruno the owner was so personable and kind!!
Great beach location. Food nearby
Great location! Amazing oceanfront view!
We had an amazing time!! The staff and service was excellent. Highly recommend and looking forward to come back and stay at Playa Canek. Thanks again!! Sandra & Jessica
We had a wonderful stay with Playa Canek! The staff is incredibly kind and helpful, and you cannot beat walking from your room to a perfect beach with soft sand and crystal clear water. Our AC didn’t work one the nights we were there, and we couldn’t adjust the temperature during our stay when it was on, but this was pretty minor and otherwise we had a really wonderful time. Would stay here again!
Gilbert was accommodating and provided excellent customer service! We booked the night of arrival and everything was perfect
Simple barefoot paradise
I wanted a true room on the beach mixed in with the jungle and this hotel delivered in full! Just. Wonderful. After staying in Cancun I craved the completely opposite experience. The hotel almost melted in to the beach and i slept with the door open to hear the surf which was literally only 50 feet away. I loved it!
The staff was absolutely amazing! We really enjoyed our stay here. Super affordable and the place is stunning! The free breakfast was amazing and the massages we got were incredible! The only downside we had staying here was that there’s extremely limited parking (6 spots) and if there’s no room for you, you have to park across the street for $18 a night. Also, the pool pictured online, is a private pool not accessible to guests.
Such a fun place to stay! Perfect spot for fun and relaxation. Great staff. Awesome bar happy hour/ restaurant.
We really enjoyed the simple elegance of the property. The penthouse suite was reasonably priced relatively speaking, had amazing views and was ad advertised w/ plenty of space. The location was also A for enjoying the Tulum beach hotel / restaurant zone within walking distance. Staff was friendly and helpful, A/C at night was just what you needed for a good rest, and breakfast while small hit the spot daily to start the day off with a snack.
The family suite is LOVELY but so freaking noisy!! We could hear dogs bark, all the cats drive by, so hard to sleep. Aside from that this room was PERFECT.
We loved our stay, food is amazing and far cheaper than places right off the street. Every single person there was helpful, from the bartender to the office receptionist waly. They literally remembered our names and orders… amazing stay. Oh and the two masseuse ladies WOW. BUT, be mindful that even though it’s pricy, restrooms are ZERO soundproof, very low water pressure, no dryer is provided, and they are super limited with their towels.
Great stay! Amazing view! Would be great to have a kettle and hair dryer and small fridge. Or at least have option to borrow some from front desk for use during our stay. Also boogie boards to borrow would be great as well. And more hooks in bathroom for towels. This was our second stay here and would definitely come back again. Great staff and thanks to Fernando at the bar and Jessie our cleaning person!
My beach front room, the only thing I didnt like waws that they shut down the power during the day
The staff were excellent. The room itself was dated and they need way more lighting. We were surprised that the AC was only on from 8 o’clock at night till eight the next morning. I actually went to the office and ask for a fan. The office is outdoors and they have a nice fan down there so I told them that I would gladly sleep right there on the office couch because I knew I would not be able to sleep in the room. The next time I went to the room there was a portable fan. It is a very expensive area. we felt like we were sleeping in a treehouse. The room was so cool. The biggest hassle was the parking. Every time we wanted to use our rental several other cars had to be moved which presented problems. My favorite part was the absolutely divine massage I got there. Those girls know what they’re doing. Basically it goes back to you get what you pay for. They do the best they can with the space that they have to work with. Love all of the staff. Thank you guys we did have a great vacation and would recommend it as long as we told them about the shortcomings first.
I will never stay here again and considered asking for a refund. When we arrived the front desk staff tried to take both my drivers license and my car key to keep while I stayed there. They didn’t offer any explanation of why they needed to do this. The hotel listing said that they had parking available. They don’t! They have a small, narrow driveway that can fit one or two cars and the space is first come first served, so we couldn’t rely on having a secure place to keep our rental car. There were no outdoor lights over the stairs leaving up to our room and the plants were over grown, so walking up to the room at night I almost fell and injured myself. The door to the room did not have a dead bolt, only a flimsy lock on the handle. The door did not close properly and there was a quarter inch gab under the door where bugs came in. We had to chase cockroaches out of the room several times. The beach was not well maintained. There was garbage everywhere and the beach chairs and beds were moldy and stained. The food was expensive, even by American standards, and really bad. I ordered tacos and they were cold and the fish was under cooked. I was charged $7 for a small cup of weak coffee that they made me walk back to the kitchen to get. I’m a pretty laid back person, I don’t expect perfection. But this place is not worth your time or money.
They need ac
No parking available
No lighting in pathways
worth all the money we paid for! playa canek was a delight! perfect intimate beachfront setting with the kindest and friendliest staff. the location is well within walking distance to all the best spots while also not being crowded or close to the noisy areas. we had the best week thanks to fernando, armando, cesar and the front desk staff. highly recommend!
Great beachfront , friendly staff, great paid breakfast , the complementary breakfast is very light, fruit, toast and scrambled eggs, don’t expect a buffet. Overall is a great budget hotel if you just want to enjoy the beach and the Tulum beach area shopping and biking experience. For a Tulum city experience stay near the city or somewhere in the middle of the city and the beach.
I liked the location, the service of all workers from check in to checkout. The food and drinks were excellent. The internet in the room was good. Checkin in early was so nice. Then the opportunity to stay the next day for a day pass. Even though parking was tight they accomodated us, but it would be nice to have a larger parking lot like La Zebra. I did not like that there was no coffee pot in the room, even though they did include breakfast. They did not have maple syrup for the pancakes and the eggs were burnt.
The location is perfect and though it is a more modest hotel, it has absolutely everything you need for an incredible vacation!
Super amazing friendly staff, loved the location of the hotel, my only complaint is the parking situation parking is available for maybe 4 cars at the most and if a car owners didnt leave their keys at the front desk it was a hassel to try and leave if the keys couldnt be found it happened to us.
It was quaint & right on the beach. Beach staff very helpful without hovering. Fernando a the daily breakfast was very friendly & we enjoyed practicing our Spanish with him.
This place is perfect, you get the full beachside experience at a fraction of the cost of the others. Highly recommend!
The property is not appealing at all. From the moment you walk in, to the hotel rooms. We literally lost electricity for at least 25 minutes in the evening. There is not electricity during the day, so your room is already hot. I could not imagine taking a shower and the electricity goes off....it's very dark!!!!!
The stay was great, but I there are some cons... air-conditioning working only between 8pm to 8am it's ok if the ceiling ventilator was more efficient, once it wasn't this makes me reduce my review from 9 to 8. The location is good. You can go around walking by.
AC operates only at night. Wifi is spotty and slow. Horrible included breakfast. Unjustifiably expensive for what you get
It’s deep in Tulum and a lot of really nice places
The property was in an convenient location, close to the best restaurants and places of interest, also the view of the beach is amazing. I had problems with my check in because was a huge misunderstanding between expidia and the hotel, since I paid everything to expidia and the hotel only was accepting personal payments, so I had to call expidia and see what was going then after an extended back and for between the hotel, me and expidia I had to paid again my reservation and send a claim to expidia which I haven’t heard nothing from yet. The cleaning was not their strong part and very low class amenities with a very limited continental breakfast and a/c only from 8:30 pm to 7am.
Good hotel. Great people
Hotel is in a great location and was a great stay! The staff at the hotel are friendly, and very helpful. Bathrooms have been renovated recently, so any previous review about bathroom/room issues are outdated. Cannot say enough good things about the people that work there. They definitely care and want you to enjoy your visit!
Front Desk Manager Jerry was very helpful. The location of this Hotel is excellent because it's within a 15 min walk to major restaurants like BAK & Rosa Negra. Great Lay out with a beach bar & beach massages on the property. Thank You Eddie Flores
This hotel was right in the middle of everything. It was well kept. The manager Jerry was exceptional. Very friendly and very helpful. Great excursion suggestions. I highly recommend this eco hotel. Everything was in walking distance. It was a solo trip for me and I enjoyed the stay. I’m big on customer service and this service was superb. Jerry made the stay exceptional.
The hotel was not overbooked with visitors. We had privacy and enjoyed our stay
They didn’t honor the Expedia payment at hotel or rental car company in Cancun mexico
Nice staff
Staff were kind
The staff & food were amazing. The family suite was perfect for our group.
The service was wonderful. Light breakfast on the beachfront was perfect. You can also order off their menu. Beds were very comfortable. Great location to walk around Tulum Beach... a lot of restaurants and bars.
I loved the room...ocean view...customer service and the beach bar. I liked everything.
I would have rated this an all around excellent experience however we did have an incident that threw us off. We rented the private penthouse located on the property which was beautiful. Decor needed some work and the layout was a little odd but the view I overlooking the beach from the rooftop was all worth it. We went out for the day, and came back mid day to about 4 to 5 people in our room. Some were workers cleaning the room and some were workers planting palm trees and plants on our rooftop. One of the plants fell from the stairs and got soil and mud everywhere. Again, the customer service was great and the staff was amazing, however I felt that it was very unprofessional to schedule plant services without our knowledge during our stay. On top of that, we could not get ready with comfort because the staff was in and out through the room. It made us miss reservations that we had for dinner. The timing and coordinating did not make sense and not to mention being very uncomfortable with having unknown staff coming in and out of our room
Great location, but not worth $200 a night
Beautiful beach and view from our room. However, A/C barely works (if at all) and had to track someone down at 11pm to fix it. Mold and who knows what is all over the curtains and sand on the floor of the room when we arrived. Minimal toiletries in bathroom and curtains leave a gap so anyone can see in when walking by. WiFi is spotty and unable to upload photos to this review. On the plus side, the reception was nice, water was brought up quickly and the beach bar service was pleasant.
Fernando is wonderful! The drinks on the beach were delicious. I highly recommend the fresh passion fruit margarita. The property is very small and there aren’t any amenities so bring your own toiletries.
Terrible hotel - flooded rooms and gross stains
This hotel was absolutely terrible! The entire time we were there (4 nights) our room was flooding. We had about 4 towels on the ground at all times trying to soak up the water, but it wasn’t even helping because the towels would just become sopping wet. We talked to the front desk when the problem first started and they said there was nothing they could do. On top of it, our room was gross in general. There were blood stains on all 4 of the curtains, stains on the bed sheets and what looked to be mold in the shower. The hotel was extremely stingy about towels, even though we absolutely needed them in our room to soak up the water. It was pulling teeth to get any extras from them. Our friends stayed in the penthouse suite and also had issues with flooding... and one of them actually slipped and fell because of it. I have never been so disappointed in a hotel in my life.
This hotel was sadly disappointing. If it wasn’t for the warm staff, I would give it 1-star. We showed up two hours after check in to find that the room with the ocean view we reserved was flooded. There were leaks in the ceiling. We were moved temporarily into a garden room which was very dark and small for 3 people. The room we originally booked was given to another group and we were promised a food and drink credit for the price difference which we didn’t receive. Eventually we got a discount per night on the room and stayed in another Room for the remainder of the stay. The room service didn’t come for 2 nights out of 4 and the bugs were bad. Worms and roaches :( they didn’t replace the water from the previous guests and the floors were not very clean. I wish I didn’t have to review this place, but it’s a warning if you’re looking a For a special experience.
The staff at Playa Canek is so helpful and friendly! The spot is right on the beach and in the middle of the busy parts of Tulum. If you want a spot that gets you right in the middle of the action, Playa Canek is your place. Also, be sure to say "Hi!" to Fernando! He took great care of us!
Hot night...
To all future stayers FYI AC's are controlled and only work from 8pm-7am.. Needless to say that ours wasn't working! We asked the staff and didn't do much other than give us a standing fan.. Following morning a staff member came and fixed the issue; he even stated "So sorry guys, the night staff should have called me last night and I would of came". Night staff just came and tried to convince us that it wasnt too hot, an the fan would cool it down.. it just wasn't a nice night. Other than that, beach acces was great, food was great freshly cooked.
Wonderful stay
Fernando made our stay very special! Nice and chilled vacation spot :)
Perfect for the Minimalist
Property is perfectly tucked into a natural scape of trees with immediate toes in the sand access to the beach where you can soak up hours of ocean views and open breeze. Eco-friendly use of water and utilities. The rooms have a minimalistic vibe containing only the essentials so don’t expect a tv, telephone, refrigerators, microwaves, etc. We never really had “hot” water but you honestly don’t need it when you are freshening up at any point of your stay because it is quite hot outside and a luke warm/cool shower is quite refreshing at anytime of the day. The A/C is managed to run 8pm-7am which mirrors when guests are most likely to be in their room and it worked perfectly. The staff were friendly and very attentive. The property grounds were clean and neat. The beach beds, cushions, and umbrellas, however were torn and stained so I avoided using and enjoyed my beach towel and the umbrella they will provide. Beachside breakfast and food was good and the drinks did not disappoint. It is a safe area and not as congested as other parts of the strip. You are also within walking distance to more restaurants and bars if you would like to venture off the property. I hope this never becomes another commercial resort and remains authentic to the culture of the city and people. Perfect stay for me and I can only see this property getting better with every season.
The actual property was beautiful but things did not work
Good location
Great location but no AC until 8pm.
The hotel is very small and was under construction. It was just ok
Property is under construction and doesn't resemble its pictures
Beware! This hotel is a construction zone!
Stayed at this property over Christmas break in 2019 with my friend and we were extremely disappointed as the whole hotel was under full construction and we were not notified at time of booking or before arrival and say that there wasn’t even a check in and the guy gave us a key with no ID or anything and how we felt unsafe due to it. It was inconvenient, noisy and we felt unsafe with all of the construction workers lurking at all over the hotel.
At the moment they are doing work on the hotel so there is hammering from in the morning until the early evening and you need to walk under construction to get too the beach. Reception staff, massive staff and bar staff are very nice and helpful.
Building site , terrible food and drinks , overpriced , do not stay there
Great location
Great location. Beautiful beachfront view. Noisy, you could hear everything happening upstairs and in the next room, there where also noise from people working on the facility. No hot water the first day.
This place has gone way downhill. They had construction happening in their high season, and they offered two for one drinks as an apology. No, I want to go on vacation and not be jarred out of bed to hammering at my head at 8am. Not a drink! Especially when we are paying premium price. The key to the room kept getting stuck and locking us out. We requested our room to be cleaned which only happened once in our 5 day stay. Good luck trying to get a towel for the bath or beach! I’m also in dispute because my credit card was charged for more than my orbitz reservation. Save yourself your vacation time and a headache and stay somewhere else!!
Loved the easy access to the beach. We had trouble with hot water, perhaps water can be warm at night instead of only day time.
Hotel Under Construction (Oct 2019)
They had construction going on, so when we showed up they had no room for us, so they put us in a neighboring hotel, that was not great. A/C limited to few hours there was mold in the room that they assigned us... and we just canceled and stayed somewhere else.
When we arrived at 9 PM we came to realize the hotel is under Shan and we did not have a place to stay. They did not email before hand or let us know what we are arriving to you. We went to doors down to a new location that they asked us to go stay at we did. Then by the end of the trip they trying to charge our credit card again for our stay even though we had paid the secondary hotel and it was just a horrible cluster. When we arrived at 9 PM we came to realize the hotel is under action and we did not have a place to stay. They did not email before hand or let us know what we are arriving to. Then by the end of the trip they trying to charge our credit card again for our stay even though we had paid the secondary hotel and it was just a horrible cluster I would not recommend either Eco hotel to stay at nor would I ever ever come back to either location It was a nightmare. We had no water no hot water we took showers with salt water and literally had no amenities whatsoever.
The exterior of the property was unique and very appealing. the ocean view was amazing and the beach right outside your doorsteps was outstanding. The cleaning service did a great job every day as well. My biggest complaint was the water. We were not able to take showers because the water pressure was so low and by the end of our stay our toilets didn't even flush. This was an inconvenience. Our air conditioning in our room was also not working and we never seen employees to ask about certain things such as massages that were offered at the hotel. Overall, the hotel was unique and appealing but there were things that were disappointing
Terrible stench related to accumulation of seaweed. Unable to enjoy beach due to this situation. Nearby hotels had their properties cleaned by a man on a daily basis in the morning and evening.
The hotel has a great location right on the beach, however the power/lack of AC situation and parking for our rental car was a beg letdown
Terrible. Worse than terrible. No A/C during our entire stay, dirty sheets, uncomfortable bed and pillows, bug infested rooms, and terrible smell. Our stay was absolutely miserable.
Perfect simple stay in Tulum
This was my second time staying at Playa Canek. Everyone there is very friendly and helpful, especially Fernando! The location is unbeatable if you want to stay on the beach. Very close to all the most popular restaurants and shops. The shower was broken in our room and they quickly accommodated us to another room. The beach bar is fun, and we got fantastic massages right on the beach. There’s nothing fancy about Playa Canek and that’s what I love about it the most!! Will definitely come back again.
This property is magaged by a beautiful young family that has put together an incredible staff of friendly, honest, caring people. Every need we had was met immediately. I felt we where treated like family from the moment we arrived. The restaurant is small and serves excellent affordable food that is obviously prepared and served with great pride. The bar is on the beach and is staffed with local guys that promoted a very relaxed and friendly environment. They were very proud and happy to share their culture with us and it was a true honor to get to share some of our own culture with them. I've spent a lot of time on various coasts and can't remember ever having such an unspoiled view of the horizon. No lights from shipping traffic or oil rigs off in the distance. Pure beauty. This is a smaller property and the bar and restaurant close early. There are plenty of late night dining and drinking type places easily within walking distance if that's your thing. We enjoyed being removed from all of that. Dark brought piece and quiet and an absolutely amazing view of the stars. We feel truly blessed to have chosen the perfect place for US to stay in Tulum and will definitely be back.
Playa Canek was a wonderful hotel to stay in. We were a little nervous booking this hotel because it was much cheaper than the others but we were so happy with it! The staff was amazing. Everyone was so helpful. We stayed in room 10 and were so close to the beach and on ground level so sand right outside our door. Our room was cute and always clean. Having a bar and restaurant at our own hotel was perfect! The happy hour was any hour you want but usually 3 to 5! 2 for 1 drinks. We thought our hotel had the best drinks of anywhere around! Massages were right there too! 1 massage for 45 or 2 for 80. We were close to everything! We couldn’t have asked for a better beachfront experience. The only thing they need to improve is the bike rentals. The bikes need to be replaced so we rented bikes from the place next door. Playa Canek charged a credit fee for your stay so you can pay in US dollars or pesos when you get there. They were fair with currency exchange. Stay at Playa Canek! We loved it. Gracias!
My favourite place to stay in Tulum!
Such a fabulous gem. Small but great rooms, food and service. Hopefully you’ll have a chance to meet Fernando when you visit, he’ll give you all the best local recommendations. This was my fifth visit to Tulum and 3rd stay at playa Canek and will be back again!
The rooms are very clean and the beds are comfortable. The shower heads in some of the rooms may need to be cleaned because of mineral build up. They could also use a coffee set up in the morning with some fresh fruit and toast. Otherwise the beach is beautiful with comfortable beach bed and umbrellas. There are lots of restaurants and shops in the area. The people that work in the hotel are very nice.
Clean, restful, awesome. I can't wait to go back! ......................................
Incredibly nice people! Perfect location and directly on the beach. The owners and the employees couldn't have been more welcoming. Tulum is amazing and I loved staying here.
Great base in Tulum
Incredibly friendly and personal service. The food, from the guacamole & tacos to the lobster & the crispy octopus, was really terrific. Charming place, a little shabby-chic, but nice all around
Check in debacle
We booked a four-night stay. When we checked in, we were told that they could only accommodate one night because they never got an email from hotels.com. While I was on the phone with hotels.com, they all of a sudden "found" the email; however, we had to move to another room after one night. The room was comfortable, but they didn't clean it until our third night. In addition, they charged us $30 a night for an extra person because we only booked for two. Other than that, the location was close to everything we wanted to explore. I wouldn't book with them again.
Extremely disappointed in this hotel and how it was presented on this site. The photographs are deceptive making it look like it was part of a larger, nicer neighboring hotel. Parts of the hotel were under construction, which was unbeknownst to us prior to arriving. Wires and construction materials were all along the floor outside which was hazardous. The hotel only turns on the air conditioners in the room from 9 PM to 7 AM, which was unacceptable for me as I have asthma. We had to open the windows and doors to let air in but outside our room was a public bathroom which carried in an rancid odor. The receptionist was attentive to our issues and understood how the hotel was misrepresented online. She contacted the owner to try to resolve these problems but he was unwilling to turn on the air conditioning nor refund us. Angered with the conditions and service at the Playa Canek Beachfront Eco Hotel, we decided to move to a more comfortable hotel down the road.
Staff was really friendly and nice, location is top notch, rooms are as expected for a eco lodge, they do have electricity and plugs, they do have Air Conditioning (only runs from 8PM to 7AM), they have hot water, the rooms are clean, the beach access and beds are nice, the wifi works reasonably well. They have parking which is useful - for a place on the beach in Tulum it's pretty good - there was some construction next door (as of 12/27/2018) imagine that ends in a month or so - certainly not the hotel's fault and not terrible annoying.
Beachfront property with amazing view. Rooms are very cozy. Love the hammock that’s right outside the room. It is perfect when you just want to lay out and enjoy the breeze. Bathroom is very small and the shower did not work when we first got there. Receptionist said it takes up to 10 mins for it to work but it did not come on until we addressed it a second time. Seems like they just had to turn it on from their end.
Bar closes very early. Only other one close by are $10 a drink. No where to get coffee or even hit water. A/C did NOT work after 8 pm. It is a vet cute botique hotel
loved that the beach was right there, the rooms were a decent size and the staff were very accomodating
Perfect location and a super good price to be right on the beach! The Eco style suited us...........walking on sand as soon as we stepped out of the shuttle van. Natural plants throughout property; on site cafe, beach bar, no TV or other distractions. Beach loungers, umbrellas, massage, happy hour! We will try to stay here again.
This was the perfect place for my birthday weekend! The staff was great and the room was beautiful. Overall 10/10 and would definitely stay here again.
Great short stay.
Weather was great for the short time we were there. Our room was (room 8) was spacious. Little amenities, but didn't need much anyway. Our room stayed fairly cool during the day as it faced the garden side instead of the beach side. The beach bar was great. Friendly staff and good drinks. Didn't eat any food there. Air conditioner runs from 8 pm to 7 am. It was comfortable to sleep and the bed was super comfy.
I would definitely stay here again!
This hotel was pretty great! PROS: The staff was wonderful, food & drinks delicious, great beach space, location is right in the heart of it all, the beds were comfortable, water pressure good, & there was actually a/c while we slept which was a HUGE bonus! A few small cons: - A few bugs in the room, however we kept at least 1 screened-window open at all times so this wasn't a huge surprise. We did have quite the fun experience with a crab hiding behind our bag, no clue how he got in the room, but it made for a funny story! - The decorative pillows were a little yucky - they need to be replaced. - Towels have rust stains, which made them appear dirty at first glance, however they smelled very clean and were replaced daily, as well. - The a/c leaked condensation onto the floor while on a few times, which we learned the hard way by having it drip into a bag for a few mins before realizing. So DO NOT store your bag under the a/c! - Wifi was off/on 3 of our 5 nights. I had to go to the bar and ask the bartender to enter the password for the other private wifi - that helped a bit. The only big negative was that we did not get the room shown in the photos which was supposed to be either room 1 or 2 on the 3rd fl. - instead we got room 4 on the 2nd fl. which was smaller and not as good of a view. This issue was not at the fault of the hotel however, this was all Hotels website. Overall, we were pretty happy with our stay and I would definitely stay again!
Lovely location, but not worth the money
We had a bit of trouble while staying at Playa Canek. While staying here we had to change rooms due to the facilities in our first room being faulty (such as the shower, bathroom tap and wifi). The staff were very accomodating in our room change which was very much appreciated. However, we still had a few problems with the new room when our shower stopped working and we were unable to switch the aircon off at night. The hotel is in a wonderful location and the beach was lovely, but we felt as though we didn’t get our money’s worth.
Artsy but not worth the cost
This hotel, while creatively designed overall highlighting unique art pieces throughout the hotel comon areas feels like it's passed it's heyday. The basic room was a comfortable size with relatively large bathroom. The sitting chair was once leather but had deteriorated down to mostly ruff stuffing and should have been disposed off some time ago. The towlels are small and sup par quality. It felt like you were really pay for the art installations in the hotel versus the accommodation itself. The staff all seem a bit indifferent. However the lovely ladies that did the cleaning were kind, always said hello in the hallways and had big smiles. Also, for 4 extra dollars I suggest going with the valet parking verses self parking, they were quick and efficient. Also the restaurant had some good selection but if you don't mind a little drive you have some great restaurants nearby.
Amazing jungle stay
Amazing place in the jungle, the rooms are so nice and big, amazing design, care about every little detail, very good equiped! Nice jungle swimming pools, romantic and quiet atmosphere. It's only 7 minutes nice walking from the highway. There you can catch the collectivo and go wherever you want. Much recommended!
Shower barely functioned - no hot water most days and a trickle of water for most showers. When it did have "hot" water it was temperamental and lasted for seconds. This is really more of a 2.5 star hotel - fine for budget accommodations but the lack of a functioning shower and tiny beach area turned me off. Beach was also piled up with seaweed and staff was not trying to clean/remove it (other hotels at least tried to clean away seaweed so it looked nice). Beds were clean/comfortable.
Pros: Amazing location, beach front, great view, welcoming staff, clean rooms Cons: A/C only at night but you dont really need it in the day and it stays relatively cool in the room even during the day. There were thunderstorms during my stay and unfortunately the window wasn't sealed all the way and there was water leaking into our room. Overall, amazing location- def recommend it! Tip for your stay in Tulum: bring cash! most places do not accept card and many of the ATM's are out of order.
It was a pleasant stay however they were not too flexible with extending our stay or with a little later check out without charging a fee. They also charged $50 more to my cc then what was on my signed receipt. The staff also gave us wrong directions to a restaurant. However overall the room was available when we arrived and clean. During the stay the staff was nice. There are nicer hotels close by but for the price I can’t complain.
Good enough hotel
Tulum is not what it was even 6 years ago. This hotel reflects the change. Expensive for what it offers. Crowded onto a strip of the beach. Our room was the best the hotel offers. The view was terrific. The housekeeping was perfect. Hotel management was fair to poor. It is a truism that "staff is friendly"; everyone we encountered in the service side of the experience was warm and helpful and gracious. The management at Playa Cenak seemed to lack in sophistication. The front office was shut down by 8:00 or earlier leaving any questions or problems to go unattended to until the next morning. We were not impressed with the experience but did encounter a friendly face to express out disappointments and concerns. We ate but once in the hotel's restaurant and found the meal to be adequate but less than we enjoyed on the street. To summarize; everyone was friendly, the management was fair to poor; food was not inspiring; the beach was what is expected in that part of Mexico; the room was a highlight despite hit or miss hot water that was at most a paltry stream. We would not return to this hotel.
Absolutely perfect for a no-frills beach trip. The staff was phenomenal, friendly, and helpful. Service was great and the staff also was great at sharing local info and recommendations. Couldn’t be easier to walk out of your hotel room and onto the beach with a full bar and cozy beach beds. Gave four stars on facilities only because the AC was down one night because of a power outage so that was a hot night, but was there for 5 nights total with no issues.
