Heritage hotel in the city.
The rooms are very comfortable, and location is good for exploring the French quarter on foot. Service a little stuffy, and breakfast buffet could be better. The old building has a lot of charm and value for money overall its good.
breakfast
i don't know whether it was my fault booking the hotel but we booked two people for the hotel room but the breakfast was for only one person. So when we got there we had to pay for a second person.
House of Horrors! Moller Villa is Not What It Seem
House of horrors! Stayed two nights in the 'Executive Room' and regretted every minute. Here’s why: • Don’t trust the images on the website. It looks like this place is set within landscaped gardens but is actually next to a major road on one side, an elevated motorway on another, and a tower block at the back (see our pics) • Due to the proximity to a major road, there is traffic noise at all day and night • We were located on the second floor in a part of the building without an elevator, so had to take cases up and down two floors of stairs • Our room had windows on all sides with blinds to give privacy or to keep the light out, however as every single one of the blinds was broken, they remained down leaving the room perpetually gloomy • On our second night, we were woken at 00.10hrs by a member of staff cleaning the stairs outside our room. Although we called the reception about this, the cleaning continued for another 30-45 minutes • the room hadn’t been thoroughly cleaned for a long time because we picked up lots of dirt on our feet • we were charged £6.84 for two mini bottles of Evian water in our room. This is unacceptable because there are general warnings to avoid drinking tap water in Shanghai, and the bottles had no prices attached unlike other items in the room Moller Villa can't be classified as a hotel. It is not set up to take guests and seems instead to be a place where people go for afternoon tea. When checking in and out, staff seemed unclear what to do.
Disappointed
The room is smelly , but was covered with strong perfume smell. The front desk stuff was not Friendly. It said that included the breakfast, but only one breakfast, Even though I booked two people ... I will not go back .
Worst experience on Hotels.com so far
Worst experience ever so far since using Hotels.com. Old, unclean, broken guest rooms. Never ever.
The property is near a school (i think) as I csn hear teachers with megaphone around 7 in the morning yelling st the students for morning sport. Not sure if other rooms can hear it though. My room is st the attic and need to climb sone staircase. Not convenient if you have luggage.
Hotel eclectic. Restaurant average though...
The staff are not helpful nor friendly. Asked them to assist on taking some of my luggage when I was going to check in. They ignore my totally and instead helped another lady that arrived later with one of her shopping bags. Breakfast is not good and they only have Chinese restaurant in the evening which is strange (i asked the concierge). Staff cannot speak / understand English...
Everything was perfect in my trip....i really like it...Excelente breakfast as well
Room for improvement
The TV kept breaking down only 1 english movie channel and no sound. Lots of flies in the bathroom and kind of smelly. The Aircondition could not control the temperature even on 25C and lowest setting the room was freezing cold. Quality of breakfeast was below average for a so called luxury boutique hotel Dissapointing. On the lobby entrance some real bad smell due to the cleaning chemical they use, felt very unhealthy
I love this Moller Villa Hotel. Even it is small but very quite and at the best location in Shanghai.
This hotel is historic and full of colonial motive, quite a departure from the modern 5-star accommodations. Food is great, and it's close to many good eating and shopping sites. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay.
Very good hotel and good location. Kind staff.......
Fabulous Hotel, Great Experience
The breakfast was amazing with Western and Shanghai/Cantonese options. One could eat healthy or splurge on some tasty ones. The dining hall was BEAUTIFUL and service was fantastic. The gym was tiny, with one elliptical and one treadmill and some dumbbells. There were some free fruits and snacks in the hotel room as well. The room was spacious and the bed was super comfy. The staff members are all super friendly. The only thing I dislike is that the walls were paper thin. Whenever people walk along the corridor, I could hear them clearly. My neighbor started playing loud music at 6.30am, and I could hear the entire phone conversation he was having, word by word.
I stayed one night at the hotel. It was charming, architecture was amazing but it did show it's age a bit. All of that was to be expected, what wasn't expected was how thin the walls between the rooms were. At midnight I was woken up by several woman who returned to their room next to mine and were having conversations and laughs for the following hour. There were also the light switches by the bed that when they started flipping them to see which lights they controlled it sounded like someone was knocking on the wall.
Not a modern four star
It's a historical building so you expect everything smells and appears worn and torn, I suppose. The interior design looks absolutely shocking and old and certainly needs more polishing. The location is great actually superb. However, be prepared to be woken up by the bells from the primary school next door.
Impressive Moller Villa Hotel
A beautifully renovated historic mansion-turned-hotel conveniently located in the center of the city with great staff and good food/restaurant. An oasis to stay if one can get a reservation more easily.
Shanghai best place to stay
It was truly a magical place to stay. It is quiet and very well appointed.
Room condition
Room is small and no view
Lovely old world charm
Lovely old world charm. Makes a real difference from the large, international brand hotels. Very comfortable room, large bed, nice breakfast. Unfortunately, room service advertised as available until 22:00 was not available at 21:30. Frustrating after long flight! Lay out of the building very confusing, signage could be improved. Overall a great experience and I would stay again.
Beautiful hotel in the city center
It was once home of a jewish English family, built in the 19th century. The building was expended as a hotel. The exterior and interior decoration remains the old fashion style. The room is comfort and clean. It is near shopping center of West Nanjing road within 10 minutes walking distance.
Ridiculous!!!
Its really really bad experience to stay at Moller Villa. We suddenly heard a loud noise at the morning, there was a concrete dropped into the bathtub, nearly 2 meters long. We must get hurt if someone was using the bathtub. And their staff just pick up the concrete and said they will repair it after we check out. Poor service and we will never stay at this hotel! Ridiculous!!!
Overall stay was ok. The staffs should show more smiles and friendly. They all like robots
Unique and pleasant experience
Absolutely a great experience staying at Moller Villa Hotel. This hotel is a very precious existence when most of the the modern hotels in China all look the same. It offers a unique historical atomsphere on top of its excellent facilities and very helpful staff. What might need to be noted is that it has a main residence and an annex building. The annex build was probably as old but somehow lacks the antique feeling compared to the main residence which might be a drawback.
Excellent Location. Forget the rest
The location is excellent. The French Concession is very close. But the staff is not very friendly and we should pay a bill from the restaurant where we haven't been - only the next for breakfast. And that is lousy. It's enough to visit the building. Watch it from outside and leave.
I like "Moller Villa Hotel Shanghai"
The hotel is not kind of modern type, but has its own beauty. It is located in the center of the city, very convenient to get around. Hotel workers are very friendly. There is nice restaurant nearby (coming out of the hotel turn left and then left) that opens daily till 2AM.
Beautiful hotel, but so-so service
I stayed at the Miller Villa and at the Astor at different points during my stay in Shanghai. They were both beautiful historic hotels, and so will attract a fairly similar type of traveler. Overall, the Miller Villa was more polished than the Astor in terms of both service and room quality. Both a worth a stay, but all else equal, I would probably choose the Moller Villa (but could see the case for the Astor House, too - Bund location, more historical feeling standard rooms, and a jaw-dropping breakfast room.) The service was pretty medicre. For example, I wanted to check out 2.5 hours late, and they refused to do so without me paying half of the normal room rate. I could tolerate some kind of fee; however, half was ridiculous, especially when the maids cannot possiblely clean all of the rooms right at noon. Otherwise, the service varied from helpful (taxi cards to the correct destination) to disengaged (I.e., taxi cards to the wrong destination) That said, the hotel was memorably beautiful. And patchy service is not uncommon in China is not uncommon for hotels in this price range. I stayed at a third hotel in this same price range (the SSAW / Narida South Bund) and it’s service, for the same price, was much more helpful. I also preferred its location and breakfast offerings. But it did not offer historical flair. So each of the three hotels I stayed in was memorable for different reasons.
Beautiful boutique hotel in a great location
The hotel is a beautiful old villa set in quiet gardens and was a delight to stay in. The staff were very helpful and friendly and the rooms were spacious and comfortable. Breakfasts were also very good with lots of choice. The only drawback was the Wifi which was sometimes very slow. However, we would certainly stay here again in the future.
Great location and nice hotel with a long history.
I like the hotel because of its unique architecture and the history. I highly recommend this hotel. The friendly staff is also a highlight of this hotel.
Old European Flavor Hotel
The hotel is very picturesque in that it has the old european flavor. The breakfast buffet is very good. The location of the hotel brings you into the local environment with businesses, restaurants, etc. The only downfall of the hotel is that it doesn't have lift or elevator. Few of the help understood English. One personnel made arrangement for a one day tour of Shanghai on short notice. Otherwise our stay was very good.
Absolutely Stunning!!!
We are an American family and we wanted to celebrate our anniversary. My husband and I stayed there to renew our vows. We had a very small ceremony, but the pictures came out amazing. The hotel is beautiful and the staff were very courteous. We would absolutely stay at Moller Villa again!
Amazing Hotel!
This hotel is beautiful! The room was amazing; clean and well decorated and definitely worth the few extra bucks we payed compared to our first two nights in Shanghai. (Very glad we made this our last night, because if we went the other way it would have been bad!). The breakfast included was beyond our expectations! The staff was very helpful, polite, and curtious. Highly recommended!!
Love the heritage element
Amidst bustling shanghai - the largest in the world, this was a great return back to tranquility and sense of roots simply by the way you fell while in the place build and completed in 1936! Even the area completed in 2002 was aimed at giving the same vintage vibe! I used to be based in shanghai for three years down the road at the heritage buildings of Shanghai theater academy, so it was my first time revisiting for business and needless to mention I was in need of heritage feel, so this not only is perfect for this time around but I consider it for future returns vs Peninsula and tHe four seasons hotels ~
Special hotel
As it was the 2nd time we stayed in 10 days we got an upgrade but everything wonderful.Breakfast really not great for western people but great for chinese.
Very different.
Very special hotel, not suitable for people who like the big chain hotels. Good breakfast, NO bar , teatime 14.00 until 17.00. Poor english.
Moller Villa hotel
The hotel does not have any facility. I could not have breakfast because the restaurant does not open until 7:00am. Staff speaks limited English and not at all helpful. Metro station is about 15 minutes walk. The street is dark and not good restaurant nearby. Once they add the tax the room rate goes up.
A dream hotel with memories
A historical place located in the heart of Shanghai. We enjoyed our stay very much!
Great location, unique property
This was a private villa before I used to walk by everyday on the way to school when I was a teenage. Now this is a unique boutique style hotel. There's a lot of beautiful detail in the architecture inside and outside. The location is very central, this is the part of the city that hasn't changed too much. There's a restaurant called "fu Ji" across the street that has delicious curry dish and authentic ice milk tea. The standard room is a bit small, washroom is clean enough, breakfast has good Chinese and western selection. The staff is friendly, the door man will call a taxi for you if needed. Overall if you are looking for a unique interesting style hotel to stay, this is a good choice. BTW, the air quality in Shanghai in November was terrible. The family mart next door has mask for sell, if you are there for more than a few days, allergy medicine and a face mask would be recommended.
Thank you moller villa
i need to thank all of the staff in moller villa. w spent 3 days in the hotel. the whole experience was lovely. the hotel is located in jing'an, which apparently is a very prestigious are other than the classic bund. it was very convenient to take an airport shuttle bus to jing'an, 15mins walk to moller villa hotel. Alternatively, an uber or a cab will take u there in 5mins. heaps of food and modern shopping malls closeby. I initally booked it due to its awesome castle appearance, which didnt disappoint me at all. we spent our anniversary last night there, while it was supposed to be the first night, however, hotel staff forgot to organise welcome pack at the beginning. i was going to let it go, but last night there, one of the staff picked it up that it was our anniversary, then they gave us a nice card and a complimentary bottle of wine. i truely appreciated you guys prepare everything for us. love the breakfast there. if you love cats and fishes, you will be able to see them around the garden. i cant thank you enough to provide us last beautiful night there. very friendly staff. cleaniness is great. love that classic historical building. couple of more points, there is gym available but not swimming pool; in addition, if you guys could have improved the smell in the breakfast place, this place will be perfect!
room was clean
The charge item sign was not clear, make us pay very high price for the bottle water
Magical despite the termites
The hotel itself was breathtaking, it was like visiting Disneyland (but far more classy). However, like many historical properties, it has the issues of old buildings. In this case, our room had many termites crawling from under the rug, in floorboard cracks, and the bathroom. Other than that, the room was so nice; well furnished, very cozy, especially in such a noisy/busy city. Great walking neighborhood, fairly close to public transit. Some of the staff speak English though not as fluently as you'd hope (asking for a restaurant recommendation took 3 staff about 15 minutes to come up with anything...it was better just to use my guide book and figure out something close-ish).
Convenient and decayed
Good: staff relatively helpful, excellent location. Bad: filthy room and common areas, terrible water pressure, trickle wifi, bad breakfast.
Old world Charm surrounded by hi rises
Great older hotel that looks like an old castle from 1936. Loved it. Great breakfast included. Certainly a little out of the ordinary from the large hi-rise hotels. Great value. Very very quiet most of the time. Will stay every time I am in Shanghai. Central location. Lots of shopping / rest, close by.
when 50% off is not enough...
Looks on website and exterior are deceiving. overall experience was average, although clean, room smelled of mould, mustiness and cigarettes. very poor water pressure in shower. Wi-Fi slow and unstable. right next to school which can be loud with announcements, music etc during the day. one positive though was the availability of new release movies for free from the in room entertainment system. location is convenient in jing'an district, but must likely will not be back.
Nice location on edge of French Concession.
Wonderful 1930s elegance. Great food and helpful staff. Convenience store next door. Buy your drinks there. Don't plan on sleeping in past 8am...you will miss the excellent breakfasts
Great to experience improved customer service
Service has improved by leaps and bounds. Much warmer welcome and helpful staff. Water pressure is still very low, but overall a great night's rest. Lovely breakfast room with the garden view.
Great and Classic
The room was a bit small and the hot water weak. But the aircon was great among all PRC hotels ever stayed.
Modern rooms, Historic Hotel
Moller Villa is a mini Bavarian castle built by a 1930s entrepreneur for his daughter. The rooms are modern and good, but it's the overall hotel and the wonderful French Concession neighbourhood that you'd choose it for
room seems very aged. some parts of the bathroom were moldy. front desk staff seems as if he doesn't want to stay there. breakfast wasn't all that. don't think i will stay here again unless it was less than half the price and better conditions.
Hotel is nice. Breakfast is not up to expectation. Service has much room for improvement. No bell service and no ice after midnight.
Beautiful hotel, good location, staff a bit tepid.
This is an interesting, historic and beautiful hotel. Close to good shopping district (10 mins walk) and a lively bar district (15 mins). The room decor is a bit old but fits in with the atmosphere. Fantastic buffet breakfast is included in the price. The staff seemed a bit remote and tepid, not very welcoming and weren't forthcoming with their help like a good hotel should be. For example: The desk staff don't acknowledge you passing them as you went in and out, no "welcome" or "goodnight" like you'd expect. Maybe because they get a lot of visitors that come just to look round. After going out for breakfast the first morning we received breakfast tickets for the following morning and discovered the fantastic (inclusive) buffet, then we discovered that we had actually received tickets for the first morning in our check-in pouch but weren't informed that we had them; so we missed one very nice breakfast. The restaurant (buffet) staff were inattentive during our first visit, welcomed us to our table but then abandoned us without any directions. On our subsequent visits visits they got better (offered, and brought us coffee). Had to search for the omelette chef and the younger staff spent a lot of time chatting amongst themselves. It all felt like the service associated with a lower-star hotel. Overall, a nice stay and would recommend this place to others for a first stay, but next time we'll try another similar-star hotel in this same area.
quiet and nice place!
quiet and nice place! beautiful building in the heart of busy Shanghai city, good choice to stay and relax.
very good location and special
Short stay, i love surrounding
I really like the charm of this property.
I really like this property. Its like a big home and completely private with big rooms and luxury products. Great staff and privacy in a great location with history. I recommend it over the Ritz.
EXCELLENT hotel! Okay location.
This is a hidden gem in Shanghai. You can't really see it from the road but from behind the fates it is like a hotel inside a museum. The hotel is a repurposed mansion that was built in the 1930's from what looks like the British. Not much to do in the neighborhood, but it is about a 1.5km walk from Line 2 or Line 10 subways. That would be the only draw back from the hotel. You can't just walk out to a bar or restaurant. You'll have to go to the French Concession for that, which is a few metro stops away.
Room not for 4 people
Stay was good but booked and payed in advance for four people and only got 1 bed and not enough room to put other beds down which would have cost extra. The hotel put us in a different room and charged us a 800 yuan extra. We had no choice and had to pay. I blame Hotels.com for this as their online system has clearly failed when it offered the room for 4 people and will be taking this up with them for a refund.
Overall great, but....
My only caveats were the location (a solid walk to an MRT station) and the lack of room service (despite saying it is 24-hour, when I got in after ten pm, they said the kitchen was closed). Otherwise, it's pretty nice and has a lot of character.
Santuary in the middle of Shanghai on
The building is impressive and services are good though more training is needed. The room size is a bit small but the garden is great. However, there are holes in the bedsheets. When I checked out, I forgot some money in the safe. The cleaning staff quickly reported it to the front desk and returned the money to me before I got into the taxi. Praise to their honesty.
classic hotel
Amazing hotel with affordable price!
It looks like a Harry Potter house in the middle of Shanghai, conveniently located.
A Magical Stay Again
We were in Shanghai for family business which was over soon enough to enjoy 4 days of touring. The Moller is a gorgeous hotel with a very kind staff. The breakfast is always great with a lot of choices for both western and eastern food. Beds are quite firm. This is my second time there, and the magic did not fade for us one bit!
Wonderful stay, excellent experience!
Classic building, I learned more than just stay experience. The stuffs are very friendly and welcome gifts are thoughtful and warm, thank you very much!
Avoid, Avoid, Avoid
This place has so far not returned our bond money. They did not return it at check out like they said. Then after repeated emails said it would take up to a month. I'm still waiting and, now they do not return emails either. The building is interesting but you can just walk in and look around if you are in the area. Do not recommend staying, the staff are extremely unfriendly and hostile. Rooms are dirty, restaurant utterly terrible. Nothing is hot, food is tasteless. Was so very disappointed with our time here. It looks like a fairytale, feels like the original Grimm, not Disney. I cannot understand how such a unique property is being run by such unprofessional, incompetent, Rude employees. Go elsewhere!
Moller Villa
I stayed for six nights total. The location is very convenient and the breakfast is excellent with a variety of choices. The service is good if the housekeeper forgot something. However, don't be surprised if you see wear and tear because it is an old building. The first night, the toothbrush we got was rusty. We ask for replacement. Unfortunately, it was the same. The next day, they placed a different kind of toothbrush which was good. Overall, it was a good value hotel. It is one of kind in Shanghai.
Fairy tale hotel
Hotel with a lot of charisma. Close to the nice french quarter.
Business trip to Shanghai
This was my third year staying at the hotel for business and it's a lovely hotel in a great location. my only complaint this year is they turned off the air conditioning and it was a very warm spell in October. They could have left the A/C on for a bit longer to make the room more comfortable. The breakfast this year also was not as good as in years past. The choices were limited and the food left out under heat lamps was usually cold.
Beautiful and great location!
Moller Villa was great! I've stayed in hotels around the world -- from cheap hostels through $800+ night suites. Moller Villa ranks near the top, even though I paid at the low end of that spectrum. It is an old, heritage building, so it isn't in perfect condition. The minor flaws are easily overlooked, though. It is gorgeous architecturally, and it is a close walk to two different subway/metro lines. My wife and I will definitely stay again!
Nice place!
It was a wonderful place to stay. The neighborhood was nice and there was easy access to many Shanghai sites. The staff was very helpful!
Shanghai visit
Very quaint colonial style boutique hotel made a nice change from the big multi-nationals. Breakfast a little disappointing.
Feels like an English castle
Love the classic and beautiful English styled interior. Breakfast buffet is nice. Room is clean and spacious.
Terribily noisy from 5 a.m. due to maintenance works ongoing in a very close building outside the hotel premises. As the Hotel was not fully booked it world ha e been easy simply to avoid usino the rooms on that side of the building B. Very poor Wi-Fi connection.
nice hotel because of its architecture
architecture of this hotel is great, very romantic and beautifully. especially if you read about history of it. staff is very friendly and help full. but hotel needs complete makeover. i like history and old staff but if is maintained and preserved.
Old world craftmanship in modern Shanghai
Really neat old-world hotel in the middle of ultra new and modern Shanghai. Reminds one of English or German wood-working craftsmanship. Can't beat the location, super convenient for downtown Shanghai. very impressive place to stay for your Chinese host. Very helpful front desk staff. only downside was a broken toilet seat that remained broken for my 3 day stay.
Bad service and shower facilities
The staff there are helpless and not kind. My friends and I had dinner there, a waiter encouraged us ordered much much more food than we can finish. I spent unreasonable money for the dinner and had a very bad experience! The hotel has some ridiculous rules which makes us inconvenience and uncomfortable. I would never recommend this hotel to others.
trip to shanghai
Great location for this trip. Very easy to get around the city. Hotel has good breakfast. Beautiful garden at back the hotel, we really enjoyed. Only thing is hotel getting old and needs maintenance. Our room shower head doesn't work well, we ask for change room but because the hotel was fully booked so couldn't change our room.
great but noisy
I love this hotel. This is my second time staying there. It is virtually like a castle in the middle of a big city. Only problem this stay was that they gave me a room with a window that backs to a grade school. Lots of noise from the playground from 7:30 am till 4:30 pm. Don't plan on sleeping in. Other than that, it's great.
Nice stay in a castle hotel.
Stayed during winter and the heating system was stable in my room. Great for business travel. Easy to get a taxi near that hotel. Stable wifi (not keep asking you to sign in). Good enough free breakfast (for 2 PAX per room). Free replenishment of chocolate every day.
This is our home-away-from-home in Shanghai
It's a pleasant surprise when the receptionists remember you and the wait staff recalls your new Chinese name and that you prefer just a cup of hot water!
Colonial Charm in Downtown Shanghai
I was on business in Shanghai and wanted to stay close to The Ritz Carlton in Nanjing West Road, Jing'an, where several of the attorneys engaged on the project were staying. Moller Villa was a ten-minute walk. The Nanjing West Road is the 5th Avenue of Shanghai, so also filled with restaurants and shops. The Moller Villa is the former residence of an English merchant who had clearly run a successful business in Shanghai until foreign commerce was suspended. Jing'An is also a business center with JP Morgan and the like near by. The selection was perfect. Close to the fray but affording a lay shore when required. Most of the clientele were Chinese or Brits... speaking Chinese and familiar with Shanghai, so a good source of excellent advice.
Nice location in Shanghai. It's easy to go tourist
It ' comfortable to stay. We stayed 4 nights but they didn't change bed sheets because I didn't ask. It will be great to change clean bed sheets without asking.
Fantastic Choice, If You Don't Need Much English
Overall this is a gorgeous, well located, very unusual hotel that was built in the 20s in Old Shanghai. I really loved it - had to stay for 2 weeks and I will definitely be back. But be forewarned, the staff's ability to communicate in English is pretty limited, which provided for the only frustration. A big thank you to customer service at Hotels.com who found this treasure with a guaranteed smoke free room.
Unique Castle Hotel
Very unique castle hotel with classic architecture but with poor management!
Badly managed place
Dirty carpet, broken toilet cover and dirty curtains. Historical building but badly managed
Forget the breakfast
Rooms are clean and the staff try hard their English is limited so don't expect much from them. They're certainly polite and friendly. Value for money is reasonable I would stay there again but without breakfast brings part of the package.
Service can be improved
Doorman useless at helping to get taxis. Front desk was sometimes ok n sometimes not.
Pity for this lovely art deco hotel
Checked in at the hotel at almost mid night due to a delayed flight, upon checking in I found the staff at reception was not very friendly. Being a frequent traveller to Shanghai I have never been given such degrading service. This receptionist (male) just wanted to get me out of the way. Being tired and worn out by my flight, I went to take a shower as soon as I settled in my room. Found that the bath mat had a yellow stain which look terribly like a urin stain. The mat was then put into laundry basket for cleaning staff to change the next date as per the little notice in the bathroom. Upon returning to my room the following night I found the same bath mat on the follow next to the bathtub! Called room service however couldn't get through so I walked down to reception to ask for the bath mat to be changed and enquired why it has not been changed. The staff (female this time) was quite annoyed at my questions and answered impatiently that I have to notify room service if I wanted any towels/mats to be changed. This is when I was really set in my mind that these staff when their managers are not around have a bad attitude. During the day when their managers are watching the staff is polite. Have put these 2 instances in the guest commentary booklet which I luckily seem to have handed into the hands of a manager. I hope this lovely hotel would provide their staffing with more training so service level do not disappoint guests!
Nice hotel with warmth and charm
This was my second trip to the Moller Villa and it was very enjoyable. The hotel is an old mansion that has personality and charm. But be aware there are no bell hops so you will have to carry your own bags to your room. There are some rooms that you have to walk up stairs to get to so it could be a problem for some people. Part of the hotel overlooks a grammar school so if you don't want to get up early, you will be woken by the kids playing and the morning announcements over the loud speaker. The beds are very comfortable and so are the pillows. The bathrooms are a good size with nice amenities. The turn down service at night is a plus. The buffet breakfast looks better than it is. It's ok for a day or two but I was there for 5 mornings and they could offer a bit more variety. Nothing was really hot so be aware when taking the "hot" dishes. The location is within easy walking distance to many locations within Shanghai. Taxi's could be a problem since the hotel is a bit off the main road and isolated from main traffic areas. But walking a block either way gets you to a main intersection where you can easily get a taxi.
Beautiful hotel
Very nice hotel, wonderful staff, excellent location
Human Scale In Shanghai
In a city full of skyscrapers the Moller Villa is on a beautifully human scale - kind of like being on the Eastern Orient Express, this 1936 building has a lovely little lawn and garden - charming mix of East and West. The Japanese restaurant in the grounds is very good too. Being in the French Concession - it is an easy walk to tree lined streets and good food with English menus. It's a really quirky place to stay but high recommend it as an alternative to the big hotel chains.
Nice building and deco
I already paid for the room but the hotel will try to charge more. I booked 2 double beds, but when check in, they said they do not have 2 double beds and ask me to pay for extra bed with the 1 king bed. I already specify I require 2 double, yet they want to put my in a king and pay for the extra bed. The staff was not professional in their conduct as while I offer to pay after presenting my case, they have shown their dislike by reluctantly providing their service and even purposely delay our request. Did everything slowly.
Unique building, centrally located
The incredible building makes this a really nice break from bland international chains. Staff behavior is poor, the internet is awful (super unstable), and the luxurious bathrooms (marble and all) aren't as clean or functional as you'd like them. Great value however, and I go back quite often.
Fantastique Hotel in the French Concession.
Affectionately grandiose enough to appear on tourist maps, this unmistakable hotel is a spacious haven in which to start the day in an optimistically relaxed way, and is a pleasure to return to in the evening.
great architecture, shameful hygienic level!
one of the most amazing designs..you feel like you are in a Harry Potter movie...BUT unfortunately and confusingly enough, the hygienic level is so low! smell of mold, carpets are stinky, some cockroaches...this hotel could be a fantastic get away with an upscale touch if it was managed differently..
Unique experience
I've stayed in hotels all over Shanghai, mostly around The Bund, but decided on this visit to try something different. The Moller Villa is an ideal alternative - an exciting part of the city (French Concession), a touch of history, in total comfort and with great support from hotel staff. Strongly recommended.
A pearl in the middle of Shanghai
This old villa is preserved perfectly and has such a special story to tell. If you like art and architecture this is the place for you. Location was perfect for us, old French concession, rooms were clean, the staff were nice BUT know very little English what was quit problematic even with basic requests. Overall we loved it.
Nice hotel in historical building
Pleasant stay and nice breakfast
Very excellent location plus a great garden! it is amazing!
Great location, but bad service.
This hotel has good location, but the service is almost not existing. Especially, some of people worked at front desk who were most time indifferent, sometime were rude. The qualty of their breakfast does not match to their price. In order to be a five star hotel, beside charging for the higher price, I believe that customers are also expecting five star service. A friendly greeting can go long way.
Good location
Nice hotel. Walking distance to three metro stations so good location to get around. Nanjing road shopping street 5 minutes walk.
