I just came back from a five day vacation at the Mahekal Resort. The property is absolutely stunning. The pictures are very accurate!! The staff were amazing, super kind and helpful, they even made the effort to remember our names. The location was perfect!!! We were right next to the main strip where you will find lots of restaurants, stores, and night life. The food was a bit limited as there were only two restaurants: Olas and Fuego. Im also vegan so my options were even more limited. Fuego had 3 vegan options for lunch and dinner however I hope that the resort can work on expanding their menu. Besides that my mom and I had an amazing trip and I would definitely come back!
We enjoyed the Mahekal so much the first stay last year that we didn't hesitate to come back. A secluded oasis within the Playa del Carmen and yet so close to the restaurants and shops. Lovely staff and great variety of pools.
Mahekal was paradise. The grounds were so quaint and clean. The staff and service was exceptional. The food was insanely delicious, especially at Fuego. The location was convenient for walking to 5th avenue. The rooms were so cute and the hammocks on the balcony were so relaxing! I don’t have one bad thing to say about this place. Some people complain about loud music. There was one night that there was a wedding. The music was done by 11pm. We were close to Fuego pool and never heard music from surrounding hotels or night clubs. We did bring a white noise machine and earplugs in case. Our vacation was perfect. Special thanks to Alberto at the pool by Fuego, Roberto in Fuego in the evening and Sophia at Olas buffet. Also, all of the staff at Agave were exceptional and we had lots of fun at Agave in the evenings. Can’t say enough positive comments about Mahekal!
Love it
Had an amazing time, the place was awesome and friendly
Amazing place to stay … I will definitely be back soon . Food is amazing , staff is friendly .
It was so peaceful
Excellent service and friendly staff
The grounds and bungalows are beautiful. The grounds are lush and well designed, with pools and bars scattered throughout the property. The resort is an oasis in a row of hotels that are generally ugly, and our beach-front bungalow was spacious. Beware about booking a bungalow that says that you can get either a king or two queens. We had our 16-year old, 6.3" tall, son with us, and I emailed the resort immediately upon booking (almost a year in advance) that we would like a bungalow with two queens. They responded that they can't guarantee it, and we ended up with a king. There was a small twin in the room that was too short for him. That was very disappointing, especially as this was a very expensive vacation. They told us that they only guarantee the type of room if we book directly through their website. The staff was excellent, attentive, professional, and personal. Unfortunately, some equipment was out of order in the gym and wasn't fixed. The gym itself was very small. You can easily walk to restaurants and shops, even if most of them are just tourist shops. The food wasn't excellent but good. The desserts and the pastries/breads at the buffet were the best. Beware that you still need to tip at every meal, even if the food and drinks are included. I would definitely recommend staying at Mahekal Beach Resort!
Loved the greenery and accommodating staff. Everyone was very helpful and friendly.
Makehal is a jewel in Playa del Carmen. Set along the beach a bit away from the very touristy 5ta avenida, Makehal offers a peaceful beachfront refuge. Unfortunately erosion is taking away much of the beach - but that is not the property's fault. Service, food offerings and facilities exceeded my expectations.
We’ve loved Mahekal since our first visit in 2015 and even chose it for our honeymoon in October 2024. This was our 5th stay, and we were excited to share it with our best friends who joined us. Unfortunately we were surprised by how much the experience had changed. On our first night, a party on the property played music so loud our bed vibrated past midnight. The water pressure was weak, and the rocky shower floor felt slimy as it didn't drain well. We requested a room change, but the time kept getting pushed and it wasn’t ready until after 4 PM, keeping us akwardly waiting as we kept our stuff packed. Other details were disappointing—each room had only one thin towel per person, the minibar was not restocked at all during the stay, and one lunch left us all feeling unwell. The biggest bright spot remains the staff. While most familiar faces were gone, the team was still kind and accommodating. We’ve heard management has changed, and perhaps they’re still adjusting, but the decline in quality makes us unsure if we’ll return.
The Mahekal is our go to place for great food R&R, all with excellent service!!
I liked the beach, the Spa, the staff was great and very friendly
Amazing property!
We abolutely loved this resort! The property is tropical and the bungalows are charming. Amazing buffet breakfast and dinner. Service is wonderful. Close to downtown Playa Del Carmen. Pools are beautiful.
Enjoyed our stay at mahekal, rooms were perfect location, steps from the beach, pool, bar and restaurants ! Staff did an amazing job.. housekeepers, grounds staff, waiters, bar tenders everyone was so helpful! The security at the front entrance and on the beach was top notch! Felt very safe the whole time! Also, the shopping outside the resort was a life saver b/c airline went through my daughters bag and the packing cube with swimsuits was not put back in suitcase…. So we had to go by new ones, thank goodness for the boutiques and chain stores! *Only negative I have is at check in I knew we would owe 350$ for resort fee, ( all inclusive)that was known on my Expedia bill receipt,, then they said I owed another 300$ for incidentals, so checking in and dropping another 300$ wasn’t planned. I knew there would be small fees.. sanitation, etc but I wish I had known about this other $300 before arriving ! Would have been helpful !
Great
The staff were all so wonderful, the property is so beautiful! We came to check it out to consider it for a wedding venue and have happily decided that it's the one!
Room had broken things, it was small and dirty
Great hotel that I recommend. Staff is friendly and food choice is second to none.
Relax and enjoy...
This is truly my favorite place to stay in. Playa del Carmen with my husband. We travel a lot and MAHEKAL IS THE PlACE that we come to relax, be well taken care of with a room that is comfortable and very private. From check in to check out the entire staff of Mahekal is professional, friendly, do there jobs professionally and are exceedingly kind and helpful. My 4th stay in 2 years
My mother truly enjoyed her 50th birthday trip. I heard nothing but great things and the photos were amazing! She had 0 complaints!
I would rate this stay fairly good except for our accommodations
Mahekal was INCREDIBLE! All of their staff was so accommodating and nice. Manuel was especially amazing! He did such a great job. All inclusive and the food definitely did not disappoint! Beautiful resort! I was not like any resort I have been to. The beach was incredible. Next time I will get an ocean front room. Cannot wait to return!
Enjoyed the Entertainment director Valeria and ilen who assisted her. Manuel our waiter gave great attention to details and made our dining very special. Armando and Briain waiters by the pool were great! We feel very relaxed and safe here…..this is our second trip back.
The staff was amazing , the food was incredible we enjoyed every minute we were there. Enrique, sofia and so many other staff members were so attentive and so nice to us at our stay.
We had such an enjoyable stay at this resort. The whole grounds including pools and buildings are very beautiful. Very friendly staff and perfect central Playa del Carmen location!
I like that it was quiet, blow dryer was so old and blow very little I had to go to bed with wet hair
Overall nice stay except Saturday night which was loud.
I don’t typically write reviews. I will try to be fair and give both the good and the bad. The resort is small, which is what my wife and I wanted. It is cleverly configured making it a joy to walk. The winding paths bend through lush wild gardens and at every turn there seems to be a new, undiscovered secret. Because the paths meander through the resort, you can get a decent walk in despite the size of the property. Be respectful though, some paths dead end into the front door of guest accommodations. The accommodations are charming! We opted for a small private beachfront room which was a single concrete hut with a thatch roof. They are cute and serviceable but not overly luxurious. There are no TV’s in the rooms which didn’t matter to my wife and I, but seemed slightly odd. The huts have 0 sound proofing, so if you are looking to get to sleep before 10pm (when the music ends) opt for a garden room near the spa instead. There are only 2 restaurants open currently: the buffet and the ocean side restaurant. The buffet is nothing special. Fuego, the ocean side restaurant, though, has some truly stand out dishes. Take my advice: be adventurous and try some of their more unique offerings and the chef specials. You will not regret it. The beach front is small but comfortable. There is also a charming touristy strip of shops and restaurants literally just outside of the resort that are safe to explore. Service was not 5 star: staff we friendly enough just not very attentive.
I enjoyed the international atmosphere and the very friendly and helpful staff.
It was a great experience and a beautiful view for my room
Staff was nice and attentive. Hotel was really good Only opportunity is the lack of parking spaces available at the hotel
They were already mad aware of the issue and did nothing about it
wonderful holiday at mahekal beach front resort
Meh for the Mahekal
If you are looking for beautiful grounds, and a rustic getaway, this is great. But not 5 start worth. Staff was nice, facility was clean. Rooms were comfortable. The walking area outside the hotel was really neat. Cons to note: If you have a car, don't stay here. They don't have parking. You have to park on the street and pay a parking meter only with coins (no bills or c.card) no joke. It's an enormous burden. Beach: Their beach is approximately 20feet wide x 10 feet deep. No kidding. Above the beach they have some nice palms and loungers on their garden area, but it's not on the sandy beach. Room keys: They are the plastic card type, we asked for 2, and they said sorry we're out. So we ended up sharing one key for 5 days. Reservation: We asked for 2 beds and that was on the reservation. At checkin, they didn't have any ??? so my adult son and I slept on the same bed. TV - they don't have TVs in the room. If you want a rustic getaway, that's probably ok. But if not, it's a little spartan. POOLS and GYM - they close super early.
Wonderful place and can’t wait to go back again.
Fantastic rooms with comfortable beds, exceptional resort with great food, friendly staff and unbeatable location on 38th in Playa Del Carmen. Only complaint is it can be loud at night
The property is beautiful: landscaping, beach, decorations. I love that there were no TVs in the room. My kids loved the hammocks on the porch and the access to pool and ping pong. Very walkable to 5th Avenue and other properties along the beach. It was not overcrowded.
Great location, facility and service
We had a terrific time - the location and amenities were terrific and the staffing was excellent.
Uriel was a great staff member! Love Mahekal it was my second time here with my fiancé and we can’t wait to come back!
This place was awesome, it has everything one needs to relax. It’s walking distance from various clubs and bars and shopping/tourist sites. The staff is very attentive to whatever you need. The rooms are very nice with some downsides. It rained a lot while I was there and the floor in my room was completely flooded and it got ny suitcase soaking. The nice thing is that anytime you leave and come back the staff has cleaned up and organized all yo belongings so you don’t even need to worry about the messes. The food in the restaurants at the repost is very good but pricey. The hot tub was lukewarm and has this green sludge floating at the top. The beach areas are very nice and comfortable. Overall this place is definitely somewhere I’ll come back to.
Great attention to the client and great VIP Experience experience!
We spent our vacation at Mahekal Beach Front Resort, this was an amazing stay. form the moment we arrived we were treated so well. Thank you to the bell staff, Louis and Jiovanni for your warm hospitality. the staff at both restaurants and the bars were amazing. I cannot speak enough about the amazing room right on the beach.
Probably the best location to get around Avenida 5 on foot - the quieter end of 5th. The staff was amazing and shout out to Sergio at the bar! A couple of things that are hopefully resolved before we go back. 1. the All Inclusive mini bar in the room was never restocked with the 4 beers and coffee daily as we were told by the bell hop at the beginning - we had to call daily for out one coffee pod and one coffee/cream pod even though there were two of us. The beer was never restocked and we ended up purchasing at the XOX across the street. 2. only one room key is provided which was not the most convenient. 3. We were told that we had to pay $245 upon check in but it ended up being $455 ($35 day for resort fee and the unexpected $15 per person daily service fee). Not sure what either charge went to when we still tipped at bar/restaurant and with the mini bar not being stocked daily - this part was disappointing and makes me question why we pay all inclusive and the extra $455 - we never got an answer to this. oh and check out process took so long our airport transportation alomst left and charged us an additional 500 pesos ($25 USD).
Everything!!☆
Resort overall good - quiet / safe / beach access / food & entertainment options / location Stay on southside of property for more peaceful sleep , northside gets late night noise from bars outside resort. Check to make sure your booking includes all you want - very expensive to add at check in
The room are different like small houses and the patio amazing with hammocks
I like the palapa style accomodations.
love the ambiance, the grounds are beautiful and great style! location is great, on the beach and close to good restaurants. Staff is super friendly. The only negative was no hot water and it was a big multi-day hassle to get it fixed.
The room smelled bad the whole time. The room wasn’t very nice. Sheets and towels poor quality.
Beautiful property! Good Beach. The bar and restaurant staff are incredible. The front desk staff-not so much. Food is good, but more variety would be better. The buffet gets boring as it’s the same thing all the time.
Ok
I loved the tropical feel
Staff.is great, food boring
Everything was excellent!
I was expecting a 4 star and it turn out to be. 2/3 very disappointed plus far from airport the staff was ok but the extra local taxes that they made me paid as soon as I arrive plus $190 for tips and on top of that even through was all inclusive I had a bill every time I eat to paid the waitress tips which was outrageously in my opinion I also paid for transportation and they call me to inform me that it was not private I had first being inform that it was and that if I want it private I had to cancel it with Expedia and buy it from them directly which I did I still had to wait 45 minutes when I arrived after a long day at the airport of Mexico for the transport to come he was very nice I wills say that but the extra cost was outrageous for private plus I ask to be pick up earlier and I was totally ignore thanks God he pick me up on time otherwise I will have arrive late for my travel back home, honestly very disappointed it.
Located on a beach and close to shopping and restaurants, yet inside the resort with separate huts with palapa roofs one will feel like being inside mini hungle. Nice beach area with comfortable soft lounge chairs, sofas and cushions. Nice buffet breakfast and buffet dinner. However, lunch is by menu only and always the same selection. Tacos and guacamole are good, the rest is so-so.
The only complaint I have is with the dinner food at the buffet. Never ate lunch there so I can’t speak to that. Breakfast was pretty good. Dinner was not good, I recommend eating at Fuego or off the resort.
The resort felt very tropical. Really liked the garden area. The staff was very friendly. Food was just okay. Would have liked a night or two of onsite entertainment.
Horrible
We enjoyed being right next to the beach. It was a short walk to the water. The infinity pool near Las Olas Restaurant was amazing. There were plenty of spots to just lounge and take in the beach sights and sounds. The resort was truly breathtaking I also enjoyed the close proximity to a ton of restaurants and gift shopping. Now onto the negative. I felt like because I wasn’t white or attractive that they didn’t care about me as much. Everything was transactional and didn’t seem too genuine. The room although amazing looking and had an ocean view had an AC that would get cold but since it was very humid. It had a stink. It felt very dewy in the room and I couldn’t get much sleep because of that. The humidity however is not the hotel's fault. The dining options on property were very pricey and the food was only ok.
I stayed there for 3 days, it was rainy and my room had leaks on through the restroom lights, I tried to contact staff, they say they would send maintenance, we waited 1hr and nobody showed up. We had to call again next day but since we had all day planned we went out, when we got back they just fix it by out in towels on the floor. They had to fumigate our room due to cockroaches flying on our first night.
The staff were super friendly and made our trip enjoyable. The resort was clean and relaxing. We loved the location and the ability to walk to the restaurants. Our room was beautiful and the view was stunning. Great boutique stay.
Over all the resort was not bad, that is if you want to unplug. Rooms do not have TVs and very limited space for storing your clothes. The restaurants at the resort are good, not great, but good. Unless you are going to a buffet table service is painfully slow. My biggest issue is the booking and final payment. The resort claims they had no record of my first payment (one night), and Expedia said it is collected by the Resort. Expedia has told me they have tried to contact the Resort but are not answering their calls or emails. On top of that, the resort took had me pay the full amount in addition an incidental when I checked in, that is fine. But when I checked out they cleared my credit card for full amount and kept the incidental. When I tried to talk with the resort they just gave me a bunch of BS, so I have now disputed the charges with my credit card company as I have the receipts to prove what the resort should have charged at check out.
Beautiful location very friendly and helpful staff will definitely be visiting again
Beautiful
Phone problems, Wi-Fi didn’t work well
Staff is very nice, food in fuego was amazing.
This resort is incredible. We’ve stayed other places in playa but we liked this one best so far. Our palapa was on the beach and close to one of the resort restaurant/bar. Staff was great. Friendly and accommodating. There’s shops, bars and restaurants across the street to walk to. We will stay here again. It was a great time! Thank you all!
The staff was amazing and beyond friendly! Everyone was accommodating and the wedding we attended was beyond amazing!
Wonderful stay at Mahekal. Beautiful location and property, loved our Garden Palapas room, the beach and pools, delicious fresh food. The property is a lush oasis near the lively areas of 38th St and 5th Ave where there are many restaurants, should you choose to eat outside the resort. A bit humid for northerners to get used to, but that was the climate in early October and the a/c and fan in our room were good. There was some confusion with Expedia as to whether the resort fees were included (do confirm before booking), but thanks to Leonardo at Expedia for making it right. Above all, we want to especially thank the great staff at Mahekal - Enrique, Sophia, Guillermo, Wilbert, Ysmael, Daniel and everyone else who helped us to have such an enjoyable stay. Hope to return to this magical place which we can highly recommend.
I loved my ocean view
Excellent stay
The staff were amazing and very attentive. The accommodation on the beach was spectacular although one night there was loud noise coming from a local nightclub that disturbed our sleep but that was only one night. The food was exceptional and in one restaurant changed each night. Plenty of pools to lounge by and it was very secure with security guards on the beach and at each entrance. The one downside was that some gym equipment need replacing. Overall I would go again.
Mahekal was amazing. My wife and I loved it and we're definitely coming back to Mahekal.
Apparently our room was an upgrade - the floor had a slope to it that I have never seen before in a property. Going to the bathroom in the darkness was outright dangerous. I paid everything online...or so I thought. When I got there we were charged a "resort" fee. Didn't I pay for the resort online ? This is nothing more than theft, and something you can't get out of since you are already at the resort. The gym: ok, the rusty equipment mostly worked. The treadmill gave up on me and wouldn't go above 2.7mph, gradually winding down by itself to about 2.4mph after a few minutes. The TV gave up too, buffering constantly. That's the tv in the gym because there are no tv's in the rooms. I suspect not to give you peace but more likely because the reception seems really poor. Neighborhood really noisy, every night of the week.
I just returned from my second stay at Mahekal Beach Resort, and it’s truly magical. I stayed for a week in September 2023 and again this past week, and it's the only all-inclusive resort I'd return to again and again. Sophia at the front desk made check-in seamless, taking time to explain the property map and dining options. Eli at Concierge was incredibly helpful, ensuring our reservations and room service were perfect all week. The on-site dining is exceptional—Fuego was our favorite, especially their wood-fired steak and vegetables! The breakfast buffet was vibrant and expansive, and Ignacio, our breakfast waiter, started each day with a welcoming smile. The spa is fantastic; Elana gave me a wonderful coconut scrub and massage. Gilberto, our room-service waiter, was fast and efficient, and Armando brought sunshine to every interaction. The staff made this place feel like home. They greeted us by name and were always friendly. Even the security guards were warm and made us feel safe. I highly recommend Mahekal Beach Resort for a relaxing, oceanfront vacation on a beautiful property. It’s a place you’ll want to return to time and again.
The location, including the beach area an closeness to the Tulum ruins was great. The place not good at all, if you don’t have a car, it would be extremely hard to get in and out of the hotel, taxis are very expensive, there’s no other option. They have military people searching your luggage for access, you’re not allowed to bring any type of drinks from outside, which means you’d have to buy everything from them, even water and prices are pretty high, 5 star resort prices at a 1 star hotel, first and last time for me
Very clean and comfortable, friendly staff easy acces to the beach and restaurants, goodd location
We had a great time at Mahekal. The property is beautiful, peaceful, and very well maintained. The stag was incredible the entire time. They were very attentive and friendly and very personable. The only thing that we didn’t like, or could I say wish was a little better, was the showers in the rooms. The fixtures were outdated and the water pressure was very low. Hard to rinse off your entire body. Especially for my wife and trying to wash her hair and get the shampoo and conditioner out. But seriously…overall we would definitely go back and stay with Mahekal. Absolutely beautiful resort.
Staff was excellent and facilities and rooms were clean and nice. Food was only ok given the price
Our second time back and it is still one of our favourites! Amazing property, excellent location.
An Unforgettable Stay at Mahekal Beach Resort
We recently stayed at Mahekal Beach Resort in Playa del Carmen, and it was an absolute dream. We booked the Oceanfront Casita, #36, which came with a private balcony and a plunge pool, offering stunning views of the ocean. The room was spacious, well-maintained, and beautifully decorated with authentic Mexican charm. What truly made our stay exceptional was the outstanding service. From check-in to check-out, the staff went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. They were attentive, friendly, and always willing to offer helpful tips for exploring the area. The location was perfect—just the right distance away from the bustle of Fifth Avenue. It was close enough to walk to the shops and restaurants when we wanted to, but far enough for a peaceful and relaxing experience by the beach. If you’re looking for a serene, beautiful getaway with top-notch service and stunning oceanfront accommodations, Mahekal Beach Resort is the place to be. We can’t wait to return!
I was very happy with my stay and the manager made sure that if I had a problem she made it right! I will be returning!
Thanks Alan
Alan was super helpful.
Since we arrived we were treated like royalty. Super friendly and welcoming. We will be returning. Such an awesome experience.
I have stayed in Palace, Occidental, Iberostar and Mia Reef Isla Mujeres resorts which were all inclusive hotels and they had more to offer than Mahekal for the price and not being all inclusive sorry but its not worth it. I received my two rooms 40 minutes late with no explanation there were mouse droppings on my bed and the hotel is small and not much too offer. I don't recommend this place to anyone
During my stay at the hotel I felt so comfortable: Cori from concierge was so kind and helpful ! She is a professional! The Bungalow option with a private pool was great. The food was good. The beach was clean with no weeds. The stuff was friendly and helpful.
Beautiful place and location
Not all inclusive
The beach front bungalows are one of a kind, very difficult to find anywhere - these were beautiful and rustic, just what I was looking for.
Perfect location and very relaxing resort. Everyone was very attentive and pleasant. Would definitely recommend this resort and stay here again!
Worst place I've ever been.
I stayed a little over a week. Everything and everyone was very friendly and helpful. Rooms were clean. The only thing I didn’t like was the bugs, ants, and little worms crawling on the bed while sleeping.
I love the privacy and easy access to the beach
I reserved a massage for two, two days in advance. With the coupon they offer for one person and was going to pay for the second person. In the end they didn’t do it Saying that they never reserved it and they made a mistake. That was awful.
This hotel is a 3 star at best. The best part about this resort is the location. It is directly on the beach and in walking distance to tons of great restaurants and shops. The bathrooms are small with barely room for toiletries (single sink), the sinks are corroded and aged and the shower is made more for outdoors. The mosquitoes are everywhere and there’s an inch gap letting them in at the bottom of the room doors which we had to cover with towels. We weren’t made aware of the animals (coatis) on property and only found out on social media. These are raccoon-like creatures which were crawling on the roof of our palapa while we were relaxing on the hammocks. A very unpleasant surprise! One of the worse parts of our stay was the smell. I read in reviews and thought it was isolated. No! It smells like sewage throughout the resort, even the beach. Also, the cleaning supplies used by the staff are ineffective and actually smelled worse as if they were using the dirty sewage water. I would strongly suggest to find another resort in the area.

Lovely, unpretentious & relaxed resort. Delightful staff - so friendly, welcoming and efficient. Great breakfast buffet at Olas and lunches at Fuego. Dinner buffet wasn’t as good imho. Rooms are small but nice & balconies with hammocks are a lovely touch. Beach also needs more umbrellas as it’s v hot in the sun!
