Basically Magnificant
The Magnificant is 200m from a tube station. This station Loaximen is very strategic connecting directly to one of the Shanghai airports. The rooms are spacious and given the hotels location I had a clear view of Shanghai tower breakfast is comprehensive. The hotel offers laundry. Basically Magnificant.
Good
The low rating of service is due to the deposit policy. The policy requires you to deposit 200rmb and then the staff gives you a note, and threatens to not return the deposit if you do not have the note when checking out (even if you return the key card and leave the room in good conditions).
Good location and subway near by.Good room and fecilities .Walkable to main areas of city . Good breakfast.Overall happy customer and can recommend
Nice place to stay. Walking distance to Yu Garden, Nan Jing lu. Very close to the subway station. Breakfast is included. Food is good. Staffs are friendly.
Hotel is very clean and the staff is helpful. For breakfast, they serve a wide variety of excellent food.
The Housekeeping Nian Lan Wu is friendly and hard working.
Everything in downtown Shanghai is within easy walking distance. If you want to go further the Metro stop at Dashijie is 4-5 minutes walk along the road. There's a lot of renovation/building work going on around the hotel but there is minimal disruption.
Will stay here again if when I go back to Shanghai
Fijne kamer met uitzicht
Everything was up to my standard. Using the laundry was a bit frustrating because, requires coins, but I only have wechat/alipay like most modern people in China haha!
The staff are professional and helpful. I arrived at 10pm and the front desk helped me order food.
The room was very big and the hotel overall was very nice and grand.
Avoid this hotel if you don’t smoke
The hotel is Ok and centrally located, but the carpet is filthy and my non smoking room smelled like smoke all the time. It comes in through the AC and the hallways because people smoke everywhere.
Location is nice, Water pressure was very low, staff hardly spoke English
Guests smoke inside the rooms and it's disgusting. Even if mine was a non-smoking room, I was breathing other people's cigarettes for days. Guests in China don't respect rules, in general, and are too noisy and disrespectful of others. They shout (they don't speak, they SHOUT) and they don't care about the time. Maybe they return shouting at 11pm/1am, they don't mind if other guests are sleeping.
Central location
My room on the 13th floor was reasonably quiet. I found the bed had firm comfort. Plenty of hot water, shower over bath. Huge window with city view. Good breakfast provided, slightly different each day. It is possible to walk to many of the tourist spots, as it is centrally located. Also, not far from Laoxin metro, a 6 minute walk.
It is normal, location is good
Location is good. The room is clean. Washroom is a kind of old.
Terrible Front Desk Attitude
Definitely less than a 3-star standard!!!! Staff not helpful. Didn’t bother to even look at you when responding. No smile too. Didn’t even help us with the luggage up the stairs at the entrance when we are both old ladies. This place is not disabled friendly too. There is no soundproof, was not able to sleep well because of this, for example, even the car on the street could be heard clearly. The only staff that smiled and communicated politely is the housekeeping staff. Wont be coming back here again.
For the price it was excellent
Great hotel, overall. Amazing location, friendly staff, very clean, good breakfast. My room had an amazing view of the Shanghai Tower :)
Nice lobby and entrance though the many stairs are not friendly to my elderly parents. The building hardware has some issues: hot water is brown -- it is visible when collected in the tub. Windows can't be closed completely to shut out the noise from around the building -- seems there is construction 24/7 there when I was there. The booking price shows all inclusive with tax and fees but the actual charge more in the name of tax and fees.
Cheap, clean and well located
Furnitures and commodities are a bit old. But it's cheap, clean and well located. That's all I care about
Nice
I was met with the most welcoming staff. My only problem is the language barrier. Other than the language issue, the staff, especially Chris went the extra mile to assist me with my travels and food selections.
Worthy for money
Smoke filled the area in the middle of nights….suppose to be smoke free environment. Deposit shall be returned but never made good….. Non functional furnitures, and bathrooms gears loosen at a point of bursting. Never return…..
Hotel is good and clean. Nice staff , speaks a bit of English. Walkable and very accessible to Laoximen Metro Train station. A lot of nearby attractions .
Construction sites opposite the hotel.
Location is very good.
My stay here is amazing! The staffs are very nice. The place recently renovated. The rooms are clean. Well done to the housekeepers for keeping the 12th floor rooms clean! Location wise is perfect. Will stay again.
Best hotel for the price in central Shanghai
Perfectly good hotel in central Shanghai. Very good price for the location and offers large rooms. The hotel itself is old and a somewhat shabby but clean and pleasant. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. They don’t speak much English but this is China and one wouldn’t expect them too. Overall a great option to stay when in Shanghai and I stay here regularly without any issues.
Easy access to MRT and near tourist spot. Furniture a bit old. Construction nearby the hotel seem to work 24 hrs including weekend.
I booked a room for 5 nights at this hotel. When we arrived at the hotel we were told that the reservation was canceled via the site and we could not give you room. After 30 minutes we were finally able to book a room. The hotel building was old. Our room was on the 14th floor and we had trouble using the elevator because it was too old. The hotel staff were not friendly.the Safe was broken. Breakfast could not be eaten. But the room was very comfortable and large and clean. The view of the room was very beautiful. The city is spectacular. The hotel location is good. about 20 minutes away from the People square and 5 minutes away from Laoximen metro station (line 8).
Construction noise spoils the good view and location
everything is great
nice location and easy to locate.
little bit far away from city center. but close enough. hotel is clean and staff are friendly.
Great location and friendly staff. Breakfast is very good. Amenities need to be refurbished. It’s an older hotel. Would rate this hotel a 3.5 star hotel at best.
Adequate hotle would be an exaggeration
This place was terrible, seriously, it is so bad thinking about it 3 days after I checked out still makes me cringe, I'm so glad it's over. The most unfriendly staff you'll ever come across. Out of the roughly 30 times I walked in and out I was greeted once, I tried making a call back home on my room phone, followed the instructions to the letter, couldn't get through, asked receptionist, shrugged her shoulders, not her problem. No WiFi, told the receptionist, shrugged her shoulders, not her problem. Free breakfast? No thanks, I'd rather starve. Seriously I'm a frequent traveller, I've stayed in over 200 hotels in the last 5 years and this wins hands down worst hotel I've ever stayed at award. Do yourself a favour and find somewhere else. I wouldn't stay here again if they paid me.
Close to city centre, nearby railway station, it was an old property but very clean.
Dirty and old hotel. One of the guest in next room smoke .
Unpleasant stay
Bad experience, the receptionist that is wearing spectacle should not be a receptionist! Rude and cold. Luckily the security guy have a pleasant personality and was very helpful. Room is dirty, bed is extremely hard, my wife is getting lice on her hair, yucckk!! Breakfast could be better. The only savior of this hotel is its location and the nice security guard.
Very nice hotel, comfortable, located in a nice normal and very Chinese area. I really appreciated the included breakfast buffet which I managed to take advantage of twice. There is an interesting little place to go look through right nextdoor, a Pet and Flower market. Only a few minor criticisms - the air-con was not working well in our room, the facade on the wall behind the beds blocked two draws in the wardrobe from opening. The first should be an easy fix but I understand the latter is not. Complaints from other reviews mentioned smelling a lot of tobacco smoke even on the non-smoking floor, but we had not problems with that. Other complaints accused the hotel of not being clean, we found it exemplary in cleanliness. We rented a simple 3-star room and got a very nice room with good service.
Central location
Room was ok, breakfast underwhelming, the room was comfortable but the bathroom could use some work. Near tourists spots and an easy didi ride to the club areas.
It was decent and a close walk to things. No heat, just a space heater. Maybe that’s how it is in China?
Local Chinese Hotel
Every local Chinese hotel. Not much of service. Location was not too bad, a little walk from the metro and mall. And food places around it.
This prooerty closed to the train station, and wakkable to many attractions area.
Essentially a motel
The pictures look a lot better than the actual hotel
How regrettable that this well-situated, imposing property offers so little to the international traveler. For starters, hardly anybody among the staff speaks much English. And, as other guests have noted, what one finds in the rooms and dining area, for instance, does not match the pictures (boiled eggs only for breakfast every single day!! what bellboy?). Front desk staff is generally rude and inefficient, rooms not well-cleaned, and the hotel as a whole appears not to have been remodeled in decades. What a shame as, if well cared for and services improved, this could be a very nice mid-range hotel.
Great piece of history in great location.
Awesome location right in the heart of down town with easy access to the entire city. Walking distance from Xin Tian di. Excellent views of the city, although most of what I saw was construction. Best of all, I got the feeling it was built before the 1990s. When China was less open to the public. It reminded me of the hotel I stayed in, in Prague after the fall of the Soviet Union. There aren't many hotels that give you that pre-captialist feel which I find historical fascinating and consider part of the hotels charm. Having said that, the gym was incredibly communist! They had a weight bench, with no weights, they had a treadmill which was broken, an elliptical which was also broken, and an exercise bike that could barely support my weight, 5'10 180lbs. Would absolutely stay here again!
Is good enough for a short stay. Breakfast don be bother to go. There’s good food down the street.
Great breakfast and location is perfect. Older building with issues: avoided the shower otherwise it was fantastic!
Does not like this property. Guests were to noisy at night.
It can’t be true that a hotel can’t get a taxi to take us to the airport - and therefor we had to walk a while to get to a taxi stop with all our luggage :(
Tired
This is a tired hotel in need of a facelift. Great location to many of the local attractions. Rooms have old worn carpeting not very clean. Baseboard and door trim crumbling in places. Bedding and mattress acceptable but old as well. Minimal English spoken by the Chinese staff which made it difficult to communicate concerns. Breakfast was very basic.
Very old and dirty
Room is way too old. Terrible toilet with stain and blocked sewage. Will never stay there again!
Smoky and disgusting
The hotel is super out dated and gross. As soon as you walk in the door, it smells like cigarettes. Even though the rooms are supposed to be non-smoking, it was super smoky. The carpet looked like it had not been vacuumed ever. I was told our room was a luxury family room that was “updated recently”, it was neither updated nor luxurious. There was mold everywhere in the bathroom. The only decent thing was the view (when it wasn’t smoggy out) and the location was relatively convenient, close (3 blocks) to the subway. The staff was friendly but not worth the money.
Very ordinary hotel with stinking Carpet. Breakfast was very bad. No one should stay in this hotel till they renovate the rooms.
Avoid booking this hotel!
Terrible hotel, run down and dirty. The staff is probably the worst I've ever come across.
Not international standard at all
within 7 minutes walk to #10 subway station LaoXiMen (Exit 5) and 15-20 minutes to People's square in the opposite direction. A food street two blocks away. Convenient place for not very high price.
Convenient location for the centre of Shanghai
We had a good stay at the hotel. The facilities were adequate and the breakfast was interesting, there was plenty of choice. The staff were helpful and polite.
No
Very satisfy the location, close to interesting places, convenience to all location.
Close to downtown
Nothing at all like it was disclosed, ill repair bathrooms
Cheap not nasty, Near to everything
Only stairs on entry luggage has to be done by hand. Receptionist had to handle arrivals & departures on her own Bit slow thats OK. A porter arrived & trolleyed our luggage to the room. I did my own trolleying on departure. 2 lifts rather slow & between 10am & 3pm in use by service staff . Chairs at lift door to sit & wait. Room small for 2 people. Bed firm but comfortable . Furniture old falling to pieces. Bathroom old but clean, shower over Bath tub. Supply of 2 water bottles each day All I wanted was hot showers & good bed. City view good in the night, daytime not so good at ground level. The area is under renewal so this hotel will go shortly, minimum maintenance. Free breakfast: Asian noodles stir fries rice & congie, for the westener toast jam & scrambled eggs. There was bacon 2 days out of the 4 other days was enaemic sausage & sliced spam stuff. Coffee tea & steam buns, 99% of the customers are Asian so thats their diet. They ran out of scramble but they promptly replaced on request. The hotel is on the edge of everything, Just a bit of a walk to town square & the Bund, all handy, cabs are cheap use Didi. Finally the price ranges from $very little to $not a lot depending on when you visit so what do you expect for next to nothing. If you want to complain go some place else & pay through the nose this city is not cheap, I would stay again and trade luxury for price and it is not that bad. Just dont expect rolls royce for rickshaw prices.
wear out and inconvenient
it must be a very nice hotel in the past, but not now. Things are poorly maintained and the staff is sub-par. It appeared to be close to a metro station but turns out to be not. not recommended.
Good location
Very nice staff around, happy to give a hand while you need help. Quick check out. Health breakfast. The facility is matched with the room rates. If they can supply a little bit new towals will make the stay more enjoyable.
Bad hotel
Bad service, cleaning lady was shouting across the hall everyday and you could hear everything across the wall. Rooms were okay kind of old staff were not friendly. Location is pretty good tho
Internet is not working, teh safety box the same.
Saferty boxes can be opened freely by the hotel staff by 'simply' typing 1,2,3, irrespective of what 'code' you have used. Internet most of the time disfunctional. Whenever you complain 'the manager is off duty' or/and the staff doesnot understand english and/or they just mimic not understnding english in order NOT to help you any way. There rooms are to dark and you can hardly read anything and are missing furniture from the rooms.
they need train the staff to be polite, the facility and service are below average for a 3 star hotel in china
Magnificent International Hotel Shanghai
Location is good as it is near the MRT. Hotel is quite old already and the room needs improvement. Room lightings are quite dim. Need to pay RMB300 for deposit but no problem in collecting back. Considered cheap as most of the hotels in Shanghai are very expensive. Breakfast is not good.
dirty! dusty! and rock hard beds.
Worst hotel I've ever stayed at. Beds are like boards and room key didn't work only the maid service key worked. Dirty! Dusty! Nothing like the photos. I'm a frugal and well rounded traveller and this is the first bad review I've ever left. Trust me! Find a better hotel!!
Pushing 2 star at best
It's great when your windows may as well be clingfilm and you have roadworks going on all night every night. The location is good walking distance to the bund and shops.
It is not a hotel, its more like a high rise motel
Negative welcomed upon my arrival at 7:30pm. The guy didn't looked at me and his facial expression is like attending at a funeral. The room is air conditioned but its more like a fan blowing than real air conditioning.bathroom floor was covered by hair! Not just one stran but big patch of long hair! Bathroom Ceiling collapsed and rusty and u can hear water dripping from noqhere all night long! towels look like used and put on the rack sloppily. No hand soap, not even a cheap soap bar. Shower gel and body wash packed in take away soy sauce pouches and u can see the green and orangy colours inside the translucent milky white package. Thank god I brought my own. I didn't even touch the shower cap and tooth brushes and tooth paste as those might be recycled. Free water bottles available but u can see the water vapor condenses inside the bottles.. Made me wonder how long these water sit in this room cooking... I went and bought my own water instead; I wouldn't bother cooking my own water using the elec tea kettle considering it could be an antique already. The bed made me itchy all night. Deformed lamp shades to decorate the room give a mysterious mood; very calming but not appreciated and I had to turn on all lights before I could sleep. Rude attitude again upon check out, the guy slap the $300 deposit on the counter then walked away without thanking the customer. I will not visit this hotel again.
Horrible
It is horrible. No air con when I was there. No room service. Asked for a queen bed but got two single beds instead. Not too close to the tube station either.
2 Star Hotel
Breakfast is the same old dishes, cold, very limited options, no fruits. Room's carpet dirty and smelly. Toilet hygiene needs a lot of improvement. Corridor and room full of cigarette smoking smell. It is never a 4 star hotel, not even a local 2 star rating
Location is good but hotel is bad
It's not a popular hotel so my taxi driver had a hard time getting here..the location is pretty good but that's about it..They gave me a room with 2 beds and it was only me staying plus each of the beds were hard as a rock..thought that was funny. There's free wifi but it's almost nonexistent. I was on for like 20min and then it just didn't work anymore and when I could use it I only went to a few websites because the signal wasn't atring at all..oh and it's a nonsmoking floor and the floor smelled like smoke..nothing cozy about this hotel but if ur looking for a place just to crash and get out then I guess u could do
A suitable location
Regular visitor to this hotel as it's close to the Metro line I require. In this room, 804, the fridge didn't work but that didn't worry me. Yet another 24 hour building site behind the hotel but the windows held out pretty well. Breakfast was the normal Chinese Western mixture and satisfactory. Orange juice is really squash! No problems checking in at 1050. Remember the 300 yuan deposit, no problems getting it back on checking out.
Good location, friendly staff
The location is good, its walking distance to the cricket market & about 10-15 mins walking distance from the Yu Garden. Cabs are relatively cheap in China, so we cabbed to other attractions. Staff was super helpful in calling cabs for us & translating.
Only stay if no other choice.
There are lots of formula hotels like Home Inn nearby which are much better. Upkeep is vey minimal
Facilities: Old; Value: Moderate; Service: Amateur; Cleanliness: Dirty; wi fi in lobby only.
Facilities: Old and run-down; Service: Rude; Cleanliness: Grubby; We didn't stay because of the ID requirement. No refund given !!!
Beds rather hard, common in China Hotels
Still OK, but the price is a bit high when compare with others around the same area
A very good hotel, recommended.
Clean large room. Mattress was a bit firmer than normal but I slept well. Half the rooms face a busy road, you want xx01 to xx08 for peace from the cars. On check in you need to pay a 300 RMB deposit, no problems on getting back on check out. Wi fi only works in reception and breakfast room. Breakfast is help yourself but some items run out quickly and are slowly replaced, including coffee cups and juice glasses. Hot food is a mixture of UK and Chinese, most days had sausages, dumplings and spaghetti!
Close to sights, but don't expect much more...
The hotel is well located, but the service is less than great at this property. Staff were not friendly or helpful, the buffet breakfast had no fruit at all, and the bathroom in my room was moldy and leaky. The hotel served it's purpose, but I will not return.
Not fo Foreign Travellers
They do not accept your booking terms. Reception staff not cooperative.
Facilities: Run-down; Value: Moderate; Service: Sloppy; Cleanliness: Lacking; Has gone down hill since 5 years ago Won't stay there again
Run down over the last 5 years
Stayed here 5 years ago. Now you get torn plaster and wallpaper, no bathtub, dark scratched paneling, outdated televisions, one English Channel. It is no longer 'Magnificent' by any stretch. Don't go here. For a couple of dollars more much better choices
Location only!
only good located. We didn't like the neighbourhood. Hotel is old and not clean. Small bathroom. Not again.
You pay what you get
I was staying there for 3 nights, my Cable TV was not working, even after that they tried to fix the router 3 times. But in general helpful personal. You pay what you get .
Lives up to its name.
Great hotel in wonderful part of town. Friendly staff who mainly speak English. Hutongs and side streets are a highlight.
Good location
Location is very good. Price is right.
Set Low Expectations
If you just need a place to sleep, it is fine. Go out for breakfast. I never got my internet to work, and the lobby hung up and never called back when I called for the 6th time asking for help connecting. Other reviews are correct, this is a cheap hotel, don't expect the employees service to be good, as they probably don't pay then much.
a bed fit for a dog
Very uncomfortable bed. House keepers didn't take all the rubbish out. Staff seemed pretty disgruntled when I had to wake them at the front desk to check out! And your hotels.com map is WRONG. Would not return.
Dirty but good location
The hotel was dirty and old looking. It definitely needs some work done to it and some serious cleaning. The only upside was the location. I would not stay there again.
Facilities: Basic; Value: Cheap; Service: Sufficient; Cleanliness: Smelly;
Magnificent International Hotel | Hotel in Shanghai | Travala.com
We stayed for 3 nights and 4 days. We came at around 11am and they let us check right away, no questions asked. Beds were comfortable. Hotel was a bit old but it was comfortable and location is convenient. Staff are friendly. We also had a View of the shanghai tower, which we did not expect. We are happy and would stay there again. Thanks!
