We loved staying at Ma’s. It was great to have all the dogs in and out. So fun. McCarthy is a unique community in an awesome area. We had such a lovely time. Thank you 😊
We had an issue where it could have been, “ not such a pleasant outcome.” Ragen, front desk at Ma Johnson’s handled the issue with ease and helped us out so much. She was great the way she handled our problem. This was my 4th time to McCarthy and I will definitely keep coming back. The owner, Neil was working the breakfast time and I casually asked a question of “Did he remember the band with a long name from two years ago.” He couldn’t off the top of his head and I said, don’t worry about it. He went and found out and then had a great conversation with us. He didn’t have to do that but he did. This is McCarthy and why I keep coming back. A great place with great people.
Sleepless Nights in McCarthy
They own a bar directly across the street from the hotel and they play loud music until well after midnight. This hotel bills itself as a throwback in time near a small ghost town we were expecting peace and quiet, not a rock concert. When the front desk person left for the night she put out a bowl of earplugs with no explanation, then we learned why.
History of hotel and area is amazing! Make sire to dine at rhe Salmon and Bear, tour the mine and hike on Root Glacier. Magic!
Private bathroom and A/C would make the stay better
Fun historical hotel in a unique Alaskan town. Staff very helpful, breakfast was delicious, and own very kind.
Quaint but very pricy
The city of McCarthy is totally unique and a great place to visit. If you're in need of transportation, check out Overflow Van transportation.
The hotel is historic property and guests should be prepared for the limitations that entails including no electrical outlets in the rooms and bathrooms down the hall. It is, however, comfortable, friendly, cozy, and altogether delightful.
Staff was wonderful. Rooms were clean but small. Even shard bath was not an issue. Our roomed sink, not all of them do. There are no electrical outlets in any of the rooms. Plenty of outlets in the lobby for charging electronics.
This a pleasantly quiet place to stay in McCarthy, and a nice reward after the difficult journey getting here. There are no televisions or other distracting electronic noise to detract from the "off the grid" feel of this place. The decor of this hotel perfectly reflects its early 20th century Alaskan mining town heritage. The staff were charming and engaging, and the complimentary breakfast was delicious. 5 stars out of 5!
It was funky
Smallest room on our trip, but large enough for what we needed. Enjoyed the breakfast across the street provided to guests. Just be prepared for mud if it has been raining! Crazy when the waitresses wear their "mud" boots to waitress in. Interesting "cast of characters" in town, but generally a "melting pot" with people from all over.
Cute, clean, convenient. Rooms had sinks with the toilet and shower down the hall. No plugs in rooms but the living room had plenty and we felt safe enough to leave our devices there overnight. Restaurant attached to property was 5-star. Overall, a great experience.
Ma Johnson's is a remarkable, historic hotel. Great staff. Rooms are simple, but very comfortable. The hotel is centrally located in the dynamic mountain town of McCarthy. Eating the included breakfast at the Salmon and Bear restaurant across the street is a real treat.
We liked it.. kind of noisy first night due to kids close, but we understood that..
Very comfortable bed, nice staff, nice location in town.
We had a wonderful stay, and can’t say enough about the hospitality and warmth of the staff, and their generosity. The rooms were comfortable and homey. McCarthy would not be the same without Ma Johnson’s Hotel.
Historic hotel, charming touches and fascinating memorabilia. Lovely staff who go out of their way to make your stay special. Very clean. Delicious breakfast!

The hotel staff were great and helpful. The hotel is a historic hotel so the room just has a bed and sink. Bathrooms are shared and down the hall. Hotel is in the middle of McCarthy.
