Nice staff and location, smelly room!
The hotel was located a short walk from the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum. The free drinks all day were lovely and the breakfast was decent. The staff was friendly and the hotel had a nice vibe. Pros: Location Friendly staff Free drinks- apple-pear juice, where have you been all my life? Cons: The room was stinky like a sewer, as many have complained. We were in room 401, and I read a review from someone in room 411 who also had the same foul smell permeate their room. I am not sure if it is a 4th floor problem. I think they are well-aware of the issue, so we didn't bother to complain, but every time we came back to the room after our sightseeing, the smell hit us hard. It is a lovely townhouse in a nice area, but the stinky nature of the bathroom would discourage me from staying again.
The hotel is charmingly warm and the rooms are clean. Breakfast and snacks throughout the day are wonderful. The location is great- close enough to easily get everywhere you want to go, but not in the heart of the tourist area. Would recommend!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Jan Luyken! The property is a perfect mix of stylish and cozy. The staff were all lovely and very helpful. Location is in a very ideal location. It’s on a quiet, beautiful street but close to everything. Airport bus drops off a block from the hotel - super convenient! Despite booking the smallest room, it still had good light and felt comfortable. We are so happy to have found this gem in Amsterdam and will happily be staying there again!
Drinks and food were included in the daily rate. Dynamite location. Walking distance to just about everything. Staff professional. Rooms and common areas are over the top!
This was our second stay at this remarkable property - location is the best in the Museum District, staff is fabulous and responsive, room is very comfortable, breakfast is superb - would not hesitate to recommend and stay here again.
My husband and I had a wonderful stay. The staff was excellent. This was like a home away from home. The rooms are spacious and nicely decorated. The nice touch is having drinks, coffee, and pastries available all day. Evenings were wonderful in the lounge area where other guests gather to socialize, have a glass of wine or an appetizer. We can’t wait to come back again next year. The only negative that I can find is that there isn’t another Jan Luyken in other cities in Europe.
Great Property. But lacks soundproofing, needs a bathware renovation, apart from that. Good rooms, tastefully done. Great concept. Great location. Safe and ultrawalkable
Spacious rooms, attentive and helpful staff. Good location within walking distance of most places. Very convenient for the major museums around the corner.
Second year in a row staying at Jan Luyken with my wife. We love it, over ten years coming to Amsterdam and we now know for sure where we are staying every time.
Loved “Run of the House” Approach
Absolutely wonderful hotel in a great location. We loved helping ourselves to food and drinks and borrowing bikes for a day.
I highly recommend this hotel. All the staff members were friendly and professional, the breakfast was delicious with lots of options, the room was cozy, comfortable and clean, and the location was very convenient. When I return to Amsterdam, I will stay at this lovely hotel once again.
Loved this property - nicely renovated , well appointed, convenient location for first time tourists . Our rate included breakfast, drinks and snacks - so convenient and hospitable !
What a gem of a hotel! My room was pretty small (it was called a “Small” after all) and the stairs were very steep and narrow (seems to be normal for Amsterdam), but my room could not have been more comfortable and the service at the hotel could not have been more friendly and helpful. It is not a 5-star hotel, so expecting that type and level of service would be a mistake. It has a vibe and service more like a bed and breakfast or boutique inn. Come with a good attitude and reasonable expectations and you will love this hotel.
The
Great location on a quiet street in the museum district. Quick walk to the Rijksmuseum. Boutique style hotel with cozy common areas and complimentary light breakfast and snacks and drinks (beer/wine/soda) available. Staff was beyond pleasant and rooms are smaller than the big chain hotels but were comfortable. Would absolutely recommend and stay there again.
Friendly staff, relaxed feel, lovely places to sit. Snacks and drinks available throughout the day
Near everything! Good breakfast.
All good
I really enjoyed my stay as a solo traveller even though the rooms were small. Breakfast was delicious and the snacks throughout the day were perfect (think cheese, baked goods, unlimited coffee, drinks and charcuterie). I ended up doing quite a few day trips from Amsterdam to Utrecht, Zaans Schans and having a delicious breakfast to start my day was the best. PROS: Staff are super friendly, welcoming and breakfast/snacks throughout the day were perfect. The area was also really quiet and safe at night. Convenient to get anywhere in the city and to take day trips from. CONS: Room was really small (manageable for a solo traveller) and the shower situation is a bit iffy. The shower curtains also smell so strongly of mildew, even though I could tell the cleaners did their best to tidy up each day. I also had a large suitcase because Amsterdam was the last leg of my 2-week trip and it was a bit hard to maneuver inside the room and up the stairs past the elevators.
I did not think that the room was worth what we paid. The room was too small. Larger room option was available, but it cost us more that $500 we paid. No individual room temperature control. We could not locate emergency exit from 5th floor. Quality of appetizers in the evening was so and so. Quality and option of breakfast was not great. Transportation was great. 10 min to center of town from a tram station which is 2 minutes walk. Direct access to the airport by a bus. I loved Amsterdam, but I will look for other accommodation next time.
Great stay, our second time visiting Amsterdam and staying here, will definitely come back
This is such a fantastic hotel with friendly and helpful staff. The area near the museums is lovely. Although the hotel interiors are old, everything works very well. We loved the complementary drinks and snacks, particularly on a nice day when it was lovely to sit in the pretty courtyard. Such a wonderful place to stay.
Very nice hotel close to the museums, which was our objective. The breakfast room was over-crowded one day, but otherwise all was great.
Centrally located to our desires for a couple who enjoy exploring and remaining busy. No surprise charges. Fantastic staff. Readily available.
The cheerful, helpful smiling staff make the Jan Luyken a wonderful welcoming hotel. Located in a quiet accessible neighborhood. It’s a gem.
Beautiful boutique hotel in a very convenient location to shopping, restaurants, museums and public transportation. Staff is very professional and helpful. Breakfast and afternoon snacks are delicious. We definitely will stay at this hotel when we visit Amsterdam again.
Close to canal and museums.
I had a great and comfy stay
This was a charming little hotel. The breakfast was super and the area was lovely .
I absolutely loved this hotel! From the adorable decor to the complimentary drinks & snacks - I will never be able to stay anywhere else in Amsterdam.
Location location location ! Staff were outstanding
Great stay
We had a fantastic stay to celebrate a big birthday. Great location, spacious accommodation. The staff were very friendly. Free, on tap juice, tea, coffee and cake was a great bonus. Loved our cycle on the complementary bikes.
The area was stunning as was the property itself. Great service. The staff was so nice. Would never stay at another property in Amsterdam.
Amazing place. Staff were wonderful
Fantastic! Really friendly and helpful staff who make you feel right at home. Highly recommended
Great location near museums and tram. Lovely room and fresh bread and fruits etc for breakfast. And wine and cheese each evening. Staff also helpful with recommendations
This place is a gem and we thoroughly enjoyed both the atmosphere and hospitality!
Great location, staff, and amenities
The hotel is located on a surprisingly quiet street one block from Museumplein in one direction, and the Rodeo Drive of Amsterdam in the other. Leidseplein, Spiegelstraat, Vondelpark, and of course, the museums and canal tours are all within easy walking distance. The staff are very friendly and helpful and are always available for any questions or help. They encourage you to take advantage of all of the great amenities, such as free breakfast from 7-11, free drinks any time, including a decently stocked bar, free bikes to borrow, a gym and a common area. The one drawback is the size of the room; ours was very small, but you can always go downstairs or go out to experience Amsterdam. Who wants to sit in the room all day? Would book again for sure.
Perfect location!
The entire establishment is at your service the minute you arrive. Helpful advice, wonderful breakfasts, free drinks, beautiful indoor and outdoor spaces for relaxing and planning your day’s activities. The rooms are lovely and you find yourself wishing you could stay here longer. A perfect Amsterdam inn that welcomes you into this magical city. Philip W
Great location, wonderful staff. Charming public spaces with lovely breakfast and afternoon tea. Highly recommend
The staff at Jan Luyken went above and beyond to make our honeymoon stay special. The hotel itself is beautiful and has a prime location right near the museums and public transportation. We would absolutely stay here again in a heartbeat and highly recommend it to any curious travellers.
Perfect location boutique hotel. Very friendly staff and good breakfast provided.
Lovely hotel, helpful staff
Lovely stay in Amsterdam
We were in Amsterdam for a quick visit (too quick!). After reading reviews I was not sure what to expect but we were very pleasantly surprised. The staff at the hotel was very friendly. The amenities were outstanding. The room was spacious and very comfortable. We had only two complaints. The tub was very tall and had no slip resistance. It was a little scary getting in and out for even my husband who is 6’2”. At the end of the day we like to unwind with the TV. At times we had a channels but more often we had none. Could not even log into Netflix as it said there was no internet connection.
I liked the open windows and the bed. But the photos I saw advertised on Expedia were not the same as in real life. The rooms were completely different and I don't believe it being a townhome was advertised as well. They called our rooms "their best rooms" and they weren't all that. I would hate to see their normal rooms. I also did not appreciate the toilet we had because there was a hardened pee stain that made the bathroom stink. The staff were friendly but for the extra money we paid for the rooms, I do not recommend. Truly save your money for a better hotel!
.
Excellent location for doing museum visits. Stayed here four nights, nice lobby vibe with great sitting area and pleasant amenities for a convivial feel. Breakfast is nice and relaxed and thank heaven served til 11. Staff is young, numerous, well-meaning, and inexperienced. Everyone tries to please, seems like they are having fun and at times surprised when guests need an actual need to be addressed. Room comfortable though the very low steep eaves at the ceiling rendered about a third of the space unusable. Even with an elevator, the rooms are accessed with some precariously steep stairs. Would possibly stay here again just for location and lobby vibe. Nice quiet street. Good restaurants within a few blocks. Access to more historic city center also only about a 10 minute walk.
Bucket list vacation for the family!!!
Unique, boutique hotel that had special character! Right by the tram, right by the museums. Wonderful breakfast included and honor bar in the lobby! Can I get any better? Oh yeah, the beds and bedding were phenomenal.
All-Time
Maybe my all-time favorite hotel. The staff was super friendly and best of all they had drinks and food that you could just grab at any time.
Very good hotel close to the museums and next to a high end shopping street. Would have liked to use the free bikes but they were all for tall people!
When we checked in we were told to treat the place like our home. We loved the staff, the help yourself beverages, the included breakfast and foods throughout the day, their ability to handle a gluten allergy, and the proximity to both the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museums. Highly Recommend!
I stayed at the Jan Luyken June 10-14, 2024 and had an exceptional experience. The staff are super friendly. My room was nicely appointed, quiet, and very clean. Loved the little touches like the candy dish and glass water carafe (versus disposable plastics). The complimentary breakfast had lots of options. I'm vegan and often have a hard time finding options when traveling - but there were a lot of items at breakfast to choose from based on my dietary preferences. Loved the complimentary drinks as well. It was relaxing to have a glass of wine in the evenings after a full day exploring the city. The tranquil social areas are thoughtfully designed (outdoor patio, library, reception area in lobby). I highly recommend this hotel & look forward to staying here again on my next visit.
Very charming, quaint townhouse hotel in leafy neighborhood near key museums. Only downside was noisy construction on nearby fashionable street that went on from 6 AM to 7 PM.
Lovely Hotel, wish there was someplace to unpack
Overall we enjoyed our stay and especially Kim and Rafael on the front desk. Also your open house approach to breakfast, snacks and drinks was much appreciated . the neighborhood is also very nice and off the beaten tourists paths. If we were to visit Amsterdam again and you put some bureaus in the room, we would definitely stay there again. The size and decor were lovely. However there were no drawers or shelves to put clothes in. Had to live out of the suitcase on the floor for our four night stay. Also the room itself was very poorly lit at night, making it harder to see into that suitcase on the floor.Seems no one on staff could get our in room safe to work properly..
Nice to be in the museum district, near the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh, and near the Park, while also being in walking distance to the canal area. Excellent small hotel.
We arrived later than expected due to a flight delay, however, there was someone there to meet us providing a smooth check in and orientation of the property and the services offered. All the staff were always very helpful and friendly. The property is immaculate and quiet and we enjoyed our stay immensely. We always felt comfortable enjoying every area of the hotel and we will definitely stay there again if we ever have the pleasure of returning to Amsterdam.
The place is nice, the staff are nice, but the whole "just like you're at home" thing wasn't for me. Felt a little uncomfortable.
Stayed here for two nights and it was absolutety wonderful. We loved their concept, feels like a home away from home. Rooms were small but we didnt mind at all they were very cozy. The bathroom that we had was a bit odd, as the shower shared the same floor as the rest of the bathroom, the toilet bowl was literally beside and there was not much space to move in that so called “shower”. If you’re facing the street it may get rowdy outside during the weekend but honestly we had such a lovely time there that it wasnt a big issue. I find the price what we paid compared to the room we had doesnt match, but oh well we really loved this place and if I ever go back I would probably splurge and get a bigger room.
Little gem in the museum district.
I love the different concept for this hotel. Excellent breakfast. Very well located. Made our stay great.
Ideally situated for the museums in Amsterdam.
This is a town house hotel In a quiet street with small rooms and even smaller bathrooms. The hotel tries to provide a “home from home” experience with free drinks, snacks in the afternoon and access to a garden and a library. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The hotel is situated 5 mins from the 2 main museums and from public transport and is therefore ideally suited for a short stay. The breakfast is a simple continental breakfast and is included in the price. Would I go back again - probably yes.
Lovely hotel. Warm and friendly staff and set up. Room was a bit small but it was cozy and well appointed. Would definitely book there again.
Great young staff. Fantastic room. Well done
We loved our stay at the Jan Luyken from the moment we walked in. It is a lovely boutique hotel in the heart of the Museum Quarter that offers the best in service. Our room was perfect for our needs and the staff could NOT have been better. Everyone is young and helpful and accommodating. Breakfast is light but healthy and plentiful and afternoon drinks and snacks add a great touch. We recommend this hotel to anyone and everyone.
Great neighborhood, great property.
Lovely property in a nice neighborhood. The tram stop is one block away, as are the Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum. The staff is incredible.
Everything about the Jan Luyken Hotel was excellent! A small boutique hotel in a lovey, quiet area of Amsterdam. The staff at the hotel were incredible! They were always available to answer questions and were extremely pleasant. The complimentary breakfast, afternoon hors d'oeuvres and drinks (beer, wine, soda’s) were icing on the cake. It’s also in a wonderful location--close to the museum district, beautiful Voldelpark and the canals. We would definitely stay here again!
Cute, clean, great hospitality!
Excellent hotel and location.
Great hotel and location near the museums and concert hall. Excellent responsive staff and many amenities.
The area is a very nice area. Unfortunately it comes with a lot of very loud construction noise - starting at 7 AM. Also, as a beautiful, old house, the bathroom sink clogged up twice during a 2-day stay and water did come out from the pipes onto the bathroom floor. The staff & service & amenities were excellent.
Amazing accommodating staff. Very nice hotel, walkable to everything you need and museums.
Hotel included a very nice continental breakfast and self service bar with cocktail, beer, wine, and sodas. Staff was excellent and knowledgeable. Perfect location in the museum district and easy access to walk to restaurants or hop on a tram. Will definitely go back.
The staff was very friendly and helpful. The hotel had an “open kitchen “ policy for beverages. It was very nice to be able to get something to drink after a long day or if you wake up in the middle of the night. Nice common areas.
Beautiful room and view. Proximity to museums was awesome. Loved the snacks that were available.
We loved this place! Not only was there beautiful free breakfast every morning, but between 4-7 p.m. every night there was so much food available we didn't need to eat dinner. Plus, free snacks and drinks throughout the day. Fantastic location--just a few minutes walk to the Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum and near tram station. If we ever return to Amsterdam, we will stay here.
Amazing hotel. Will definitely stay here again for any visits to Amsterdam.
This hotel really made us feel like home. Although the rooms were slightly small, the staff made our stay very comfortable and were always helpful. The location was also great being right next to the museums and away from the noisy center towards the northeast.
Wonderful stay with a fabulous & attentive staff!
Fabulous location. Staff incredible. Breakfast and late afternoon snack included. Would come again.
Very friendly staff and clean. Loved the afternoon snacks and drink options provided for guests. Highly recommend for couples, looking for quite accomodations.
The staff were all friendly and helpful. There was always a nice breakfast selection and snacks/drinks in the evening.
This hotel is fantastic. We would definitely stay there again. The staff are kind and helpful, the ground floor is welcoming and cosy, our rooms were surprisingly spacious but also well designed and incredibly comfortable. Breakfast was delicious and the afternoon snacks and all day beverages were both yummy and helpful with jet lag. It’s in a great location and nice area, highly recommend.
Great.
We absolutely LOVED our stay! This hotel is unlike any we stayed in before. They have complimentary breakfast and snacks throughout the day AND a bar you can help yourself to. We enjoyed champagne and wine while getting ready for dinner each night and loved it. They also allow you to take the hotel bikes out for the day. The staff was wonderful and we will definitely stay here again!
All the staff are amazing.
Great hotel! In all respects! Would stay here again.
Excellent location to museums and transportation. Lots of shopping, if that is your interest. Staff are extremely helpful. Interesting hotel concept of home away from home living. Very friendly atmosphere.
Incredible staff
The staff here are amazing. I broke my foot in the middle of our trip and the staff did everything possible to help me stay comfortable. We will definitely be back.
Wonderful boutique hotel
We enjoyed our full week stay at the Jan Luyken. The hotel is well located for the major museums, easily accessed from the airport using the 397 Airport Express bus, and a reasonable walk to many of the attractions in Central Amsterdam. The bus/tram stop is a block away making it easy to get to Keukenhof and the flower auction. The hotel staff was very friendly. The amenities including breakfast, cocktails and snacks were plentiful and delicious. We stayed in a Medium room which was quite comfortable. We chose not to borrow bikes and stayed on foot after watching the flow of bike traffic in the City.
Very excellent staff and location. Loved the beautiful window in our room.
because the structure is built of wood and not concrete, you can hear activities going on in the room above you.
Fabulous boutique hotel! Worth the splurge to stay here to experience the “ non chain “ accommodations. Just magical ! The living spaces, the courtyard, the rooms, the included snacks and drinks all day long, and breakfast. I booked a “ medium sized” room and was very pleased with the large space and bathroom with double sinks, toilet and bidet. In room Safe and refrigerator. Air conditioning worked great! Within walking distance to everything. Great restaurants and shopping and Van Gogh museum within steps! Lovely choice for our visit to Amsterdam.
Clean, quiet, comfortable, great location, wonderful staff
Jan Luyken is a very nice hotel in the museum quarter, just a short walk to the museums. The staff is very friendly and you can help yourself to unlimited coffee and beverages all day and into the evening. Lounging in the foyer and living room area is very nice.breakfast is very nice too!
Complimentary laundry service. Complimentary refreshments s and snacks. Excellent breakfast. Helpful staff! I would recommend!
Great hotel and location. Snacks and drinks on tap. Ever helpful staff.
Due to age and mobility prefer that bathroom has step in showers and not tubs. Also, most USA travelers prefer showers.also, need to have nonslip rubber mats in all showers and tubs. Staff was nice and pleasant. Food at breakfast/ afternoon was good. Good selection. Nice to have free access to all beverages and drinks at your convenience. Outside patio was nice but limited use due to weather. Must be nice in summer. Easy to get to museums and transit.
a nice hotel in Amsterdam
the hotel is nice.facilities are ok breakfast is good coffee is bad service is very good location is very good
We loved everything about the JL. The staff were wonderful and we loved sitting in the library meeting other travelers sharing drinks from the help yourself area. The GVB is a short walk and the area is peaceful and convenient.
The reception area is a lovely little bar. There is a relaxing library and breakfast room attached.
Great hotel! My 2nd time here. The staff are welcoming and friendly
