Great location to go around visiting places, shopping, convenient area for good food, bar, etc. Facility is clean, and friendly staff to help each customers. This is my second time staying and preferred hotel When I an in Shanghai.
The location is excellent. Near the French Concession, across the road from a large mall with lots of places to eat cheap and expensive, but also in a neighborhood with a lot of local eateries and some places serving the foreign residents' community in Shanghai. It is just off the main road (Huaihai Lu) so it is quite quiet. Everything is just fine, but could do with a little freshening up. It feels just a tiny bit faded ...
Had wifi issues
Great location but poor wifi
Great location
Great location Rooms are fine but a bit worn Wifi was weak
Efficient service
Quick and efficient staff at check in and check out. - very polite
The staff was rude. They asked for 8RMB for one page print my airlines ticket. This demand was unusual . I have never come across any hotel asking for any money for single page.
Good location, early wake up.
Location is great. Lots of eating and shopping options in neighborhood. Room could use an update. Air conditioning not on yet so we had to sleep with window open. Construction started on building across the street at 5:00 AM evert morning, so it was an early wake up for us. We were scheduled to return a few days later, but cancelled and selected a different hotel.
No central air
They could have told us there was no air when we checked in. When we got back at night we were too tired to do much except open a window that let in noisy construction from across the street. They brought a small fan that was useless. Great location but probably won't stay there again.
A hotel with a great location
This hotel is surrounded by mall, eateries and boutiques. So happy that everything is within walking distance. Staff is very helpful and friendly and always arrange our car to go out and booked restaurant for us. Will go back to stay. The only comment is their aircon which was not allowed to adjust, so the temperature was so warm that we almost could not sleep.
Five-star hotel with great location
This hotel is definitely of five-star standard in terms of everything. Great location with just walking distance to Huaihai Road and Xintiandi, two of the major shopping streets in Shanghai. I will definitely stay there again on my next trip to Shanghai.
Ineptitude plain and simple
Late check in shouldn't be a problem in a western hotel. Desk staff completely inept. Could not find reservation and made me walk to the atm and pay cash with the promise that "if" they could find the reservation they would refund the cash. The cash amount was 25% less than hotels.com reservation. English.... Not so much. The room had a faulty TV set that was broken. I didn't want to go through the Hassel of changing rooms and dealing with the staff member again so I just stayed in the room. They found the reservation the next day and refused dead the cash. However I am slightly disturbed that the cost was considerably lower than the price I paid with hotels. There are plenty of hotels in the area and for the price paid there is better value and less hassle to be found.
The front desk people were very helpful and spoke/understood english. Whenever I called the front desk to request service, someone came to the room right away. And when I requested a taxi, it came within 5 minutes. I was very happy with the quality of service.
Good 4 start hotel in a perfect location
I stayed 4 nights. The hotel is good, 4 start. The rooms are clean, not very new. The lobby is clean and the staff is very helpful and kind! they speak English well. The location of the hotel is its best asset. Perfect. In the middle of the French area, 5 min from many restaurants, bars, night life, clubs, metro, shopping mall, super-brands shopping, coffee shops. Wonderful area. The hotel is best value for money. enjoy.
Lovely hotel! Convenient, new, comfortable!
Superb location, next to huge iAPM mall, but still off the beaten track! It's close to underground. We even walked to Xujiahui within 30mins. The property is very new and comfortable. On our last day, the bell staff helped get a Egobus to airport, which is very reasonable and comfortable. We will surely come back.
Good stay
Very good hotel, great location close to Ding Hu Rd bars/restaurants
Good hotel near the top shopping and office
Staff helpful large room very space bathroom bathroom have separate shower and tub really four star I am very satisfied with the hotel and the price is reasonable subway is around the corner the hotel is off the most famous shopping street like fifth avenue of New York I recommend this hotel to all of you when you visit shanghai the area side streets are full of interesting cafe and pubs for foreigners you will feel comfortable with the area
Holiday
Good location, good service, will back again.
Great location, clean room
Location is great- in the French Concession, but next to a mall and restaurants. Room was clean, bathroom is nice with a great shower. Staff is friendly although they are not completely fluent in English, so it is difficult to communicate with the staff at times. Overall, great hotel for the price and highly recommend it to other travelers!
Location, location, location.
Nice hotel, though with an impressive breakfast. Absolutely cannot beat the location. The vinyl headboard behind bed was torn in several spots. Mold in the shower.
Room is clean. credit to the room service.
The stay is overall good. But room rates quite expensive. Been stay there very frequency. Good if the hotel can give me a corporate rates. Your staff need to smile more. They are not friendly as compare with other hotel I stayed before.
Satisfied
Good hotel in good location... Only minus was that I never got WIFI working in my IPad. Maybe because I have been staying there earlier and IPad remembered something from previous stay. I can recommend this hotel
Great location, 2 min walk to IAPM. Stayed in a corner suite. Liked its desk/wifi, good for work. Bathroom supplies good, liked the complimentary mouthwash especially (so you don't have to bring your own); replenished every day. Bed's good. Quiet. Room's a little dated given the years. Patches of grey near the air-con outlet - unsure if it's dust or mould.
Reasonable choice
Modern western-style hotel, clean and comfortable. WiFi sometimes unreliable. Windows did not close well so noisy from traffic and nearby overnight construction work.
Receptionists attitude is very bad, not helpful n impolite.
Utterly Clueless...
This is a hotel that is not only adjacent to my office, but also a short walk from my house and from the outside it looks quite nice and from my experiences in stopping into the lounge for a drink it was pleasant enough, so when my wife and I were packing up to move it was the obvious choice to stay while the movers had control of our belongings… The problem, however starts with the fact that the Chinese Customs Department needs your real passport when you’re moving AND in order to check into a hotel they require said passport as well… While we instinctively knew this, we also know that any reasonable hotel understands international travelers and does there best to find a solution, while staying within their local rules… This does not describe the Howard Johnson on HuiHui Road…. Instead they were difficult, obnoxious and as they made every new demand for various paperwork, which we delivered, they produced a new obstacle… Finally having enough of this, voices were raised and they agreed to call the police for permission to take our extensive library of color printouts as proof of residency, etc… It only took an hour and a half to check into this disappointing, stained carpet, crappy-wifi room… In China, Howard Johnson is a respectable brand, but the staff at this location, from the Manager on down, needs a bit of help with how to solve basic problems rather than creating even more… There are plenty of wonderful places to stay in Shanghai… I just won’t choose this place again.
SHORT TRIP
GOOD. BUT THE HOTEL INFRONT DESK PERSONNEL WAS NOT PROFESSIONAL ENOUGH.
Internet access is not good. Only one guest available per room at a time. Also the access instruction is not written very clear in English.
great location
comfortable
Quiet hotel close to shops
Nice quiet hotel, a bit tired around the edges by clean and tidy. Ideal location for shopping and Metro station if you want to venture a bit further afield. Used the restaurant once, food was ok but were the only people in there We found lots of reasonably priced restaurants and bars within 15 mins walk, but when we asked hotel staff they had no idea. Maybe there were not locals!!!
Facilities: Modern; Value: Affordable; Service: Go the extra mile; Cleanliness: Spotless; Booked a suite room, the water pipe was dripping, and after the phone call, three technitions, 1 manager and a bell boy - total 5 people turned up!
Good location but cleanliness
The hotel is well located but dated and bathroom need good clean
Joe Wang
I love staying at the Hojo in the French Concession. You got Wagas & Sicuan Citizen down the street and HuaiHai Road right there!
Excellent good value hotel in terrific location
I am a regular business visitor to Shanbghai. I spend about 2 of every 6 weeks there. I have been staying inn other downtown more expensive hotels, but had this one recommended to me recently. I was very happy. Staff are friendly and helpful. Room, considering what I paid was excellent value for money. The lobby bar is ok, and the restaurant as hotel restaurants go is also ok. In particular the linch is pretty good. The location is terrific with all kinds of restauramts and shopping within mins. Will I be back...yes for sure!
Great service
The staff provided very good services. Near 2 subway lines.
Fantastic service
I stayed for nine nights for leisure, it was an excellent hotel, great location, excellent customer service, although i do find it was quite expensive, i will still go back again.
Great...with one slight glitch
Lovely and clean hotel in central location, with very friendl and helpful reception/bell-boys (who have taxis waiting even before you're done). Only thing is, after checking me in, I went up to my room and saw an overcoat on the bed and a luggage in the room. Sensing something amiss, I went downstairs and found out that they forgot to update the system when they checked-in an earlier guest. Luckily I was spared any embarrassing moments but they were apologetic and quickly sorted everything out. Highly recommend this hotel.
Great location for the French Concetion area
This hotel is within a 5 minute walk to the metro. Centrally located to all the bars and restaurants in the local area. Staff are great and the rooms are clean, roomy and comfortable. Great value for the price.
Good location, needs faster internet.
Very attentive staff always come right out to open your cab door and help you unload anything you might be porting. Some English-speaking staff, though I never had the need to really stretch their English abilities. We had a good rate (50% sale) and for that it was an excellent value, though if I had to pay full price... I think you can find just about as good for much less--though you would probably sacrifice having English-speaking front desk staff and a softer bed (they tend to be pretty firm at the more Chinese-geared, less-expensive hotels you can't find on Expedia). The internet was much too slow for a "broadband" connection... seemed more analogous to dial-up connections of old. However, that is typical of every Chinese hotel I've stayed in. Nice soaking tub in the bathroom with lots of hot water!
Location is ok
The Hotel is in the center of the city and its really easy to travel. The room itself is very standard. The walls and the carpet are not really nice maintained. The sealing in the bathroom are black and it looks dirty. Trouble was also the parking, parking is underground in the neighbor office building and there is no direct connection to the hotel.
one of best location
wonderful, good location
Service: Professional, Respectful, Courteous, Nice and helpful staff; Nice door staff and very helpful
Good for business trip
Good.
Convenient location.Poor Service.
The hotel is conveniently located, clean and tidy. Room was comfortable. But the service I experienced was terrible.
Great location, Great service, rooms a bit small
Enjoyable and good location for business and pleassure alike! Right in former French concession area and close to jingan business area.
NOT VALUE FOR MONEY
NOT VALUE FOR MONEY. THE HOTEL STAFF HAD NEXUS WITH THE TAXI DRIVERS, FAVOURED THE GUEST WHO WANTED FOR GO FOR LONG DISTANCE AND FOR SHORT DISTANCE DISCOURAGED THE GUEST TO MANAGE BY THEMSELVES. SMALL ROOMS, UNCOOPERATIVE STAFF.
Great location
Located near to the Shanxi S station (metro line 1), but more importantly, it's proximity to the French Concession makes it a wonderful base to explore the beautiful and quaint surroundings. Good for those who also want to experience the old Shanghai instead of seeing tall scrapers all the time.
Not an usual HJ
Nice Staff but need more english speakers, air conditioning was not working right and they did not resolve it because communications misundertandings. Buffet breakfast is really mediocre, didn't try lunch.
Return to an old favorite
I like this property. And it's not because the hotel is far superior to other similar (and similarly priced) properties in Shanghai. I love the neighborhood. If you want to find things to criticize it would not be hard to say that the breakfast is overpriced, as is most of what you might enjoy in the lobby bar. But it's not ridiculously expensive either. But you can find excellent alternatives nearby. It's all about the neighborhood. Everything from quick, easy, & cheap to some of the finest dining in Shanghai is within walking distance. There are two subway lines close by (the #1 and #10 lines) and if you're like me you'll love the metro in Shanghai. Cheap, clean, efficient, and MUCH SAFER than your typical Shanghai taxi ride!!! Try The Camel bar just up Fenyang Lu for decent pub grub (good specials several nights) close by. El Patio, in the same direction as The Camel only closer, you'll find an intimate atmosphere and great spanish cuisine. Maya (you'll have to look up the location , but you can walk there from HoJo's) may be the best Mexican food in Shanghai, but don't expect your typical mexican restaurant, this is a VERY upscale Cali-mex spot with absolutely wonderful food. Try any of their ceviche options, joyous!! But you won't get out without a serious dent put in your wallet either. Anyway, I highly recommend the HJ Huaihai Hotel. The staff is great, the rooms are very nice, and the neighborhood is one of the best in Shanghai!!
Shanghai fun
Great location. Nice enough rooms. Handy to the French Concession and underground
Facilities: Above average; Value: Inexpensive; Service: Good; Cleanliness: Pleasant;
Very nice Hotel in a great location!
My husband and I stayed for 4 nights and it was a great choice. Our room was adequately sized and felt a bit luxurious but also cozy. Very friendly and accommodating staff who also spoke english and a great location. The room was quiet, the bed was very comfortable, lots of lighting and some TV channels in english, especially HBO. We did not eat any meals at the Hotel, so I cannot speak for the food. It was a welcome room to come back to after a long day of sightseeing and activities. I would recommend it to friends and would definitely stay there again!
Location! Location! Location!
Friendly staff and good location. Close to everything!!!
Good hotel and worth for the money.
Comfortable and convenient.
convenient location
overall nice place to stay, but the construction makes sleeping a bit difficult. Then again, construction is everywhere in China, so I suggest bringing earplugs!
Great location
Great locations for my needs but hated the dark room. Dark furniture, insufficient lighting too much furniture clutter - typical old style hotel. They should stop providing awful smelling toiletries. Generally staff were ok when approached for assistance but do not go out of their way to be friendly.
Noisy - construction works next to the hotel
Pros - great location. Cons - Noisy, construction work next door. some loading and unloading of material started at 5am on a sunday morning which greatly disturb our sleep. Rooms and furnishing are getting worn out. Leather on the chair was very much peeling off and looks terrible. Towels were very old and greyish looking though it was suppose to be white.
Good location but terrible service
I travel to shanghai once every three months and have rated at the hotel many times this was the worst experience the hotel staff was not co operative Ac in the room was a nightmare as we could not sleep till late and eventually did when the Ac person put on the main chiller the hotel has non friendly staff and poor services and willing to charge for very thing even drinking water will never stay here again
My Shanghai Experience Began at Howard Johnson
Location is great, right at the French concession area, quiet , walking distance to the Huaihai shops and the little side streets with quaint shops and boutiques and eating places and taxi away to the the museums and interesting places such as Xintandi Staff pleasant and accommodating especially the concierge, who provided helpful directions and tips to restaurants, sightseeing etc. Our room was well kept and had a good view of the tree lined Fenyang Road. I would definitely go back to it and recommend it to friends,
Business trip to Shanghai, again!
It is a great location, but the cost doesn't give me the best value. I stay at better hotel with similar location in Shanghai but lower cost.
bathroom not exactly clean
Value for money
This hotel is a real value for money. Simple, nice and comfortable and located at a very convenience location.
Great location to tour Shanghai from.
Great location for access to western bars and clubs but also get to all the sights in Shanghai without mortgaging the house!! The standard of accommodation is great, and you only want to visit Shanghai to see the sights ,enjoy the nightlife, not the inside of a hotel, but if you do, this one is also great!!
A good quality hotel, in a good area.
I stayed only 2 nights at this hotel which were very good value for the rate I paid but I know that the rate jumped much higher after my stay. It was very clean, I had a quiet room and a robe and slipers were availableThe hotel is well located ,close to the metro and Huaihai street which is a very pleasant street with known brands of shops. There is a departmental store on it close to the hotel which also has a food court. The metro is extremely cheap and easy to use but I did walk all the way along the Huaihai street to the old town and although ,eventually, you go through a residential area, it is perfectly safe. The service at the hotel was very good except that the check out took too long- there was only one person on duty, perhaps because it was a Sunday morning and it appeared to be very laborious. I did not use the catering facilities during my stay. I would be very happy to stay here again at a right price although I always try to stay at hotels that provide transportation from the airport - it does not have to be free but it is a great help when someone is waiting for you on arrival.
Great hotel at great price!
A cozy hotel, modern, comfortable beds and friendly staff. We requested for connecting rooms but they were unable to offer us any, instead they upgraded us to a family suite with 2 bedrooms, 2 floors suite with a living room and a little kitchenettes. Free wifi in rooms but no breakfast provided. Will definitely go back here when we next visit Shanghai.
Great hotel in great location
Except for littlel problems in the beggining (got smoking room but switched to a non smoking at the next day) we highly recomand! the location is great and the room was comfortable and clean. as for the staff service - typical chinese...
great people and location
it was my wife's birthday. not sure of her name now, but the charming philippino manager there upgraded us and sent a cake and wine to our room. admittedly we are regulars, but the service just keeps getting better. no complaints except the high price of two tonic waters from room service - but I guess that's par for the course
Howard Johnson HuaiHai
Good and convenient hotel. Located at busy shopping road along Huai Hia road. Easy access to restaurants and local foods. Nice room, clean and comfort room.
HOJO Huaihai...Best deal in Shnghai
For convenience, comfort and price, you cannot beat this hotel. I have visited Shanghai many times over the past 15 years and stayed at some of the best hotels (like the Portman Ritz and JW) and this Hojo (be sure you ask for the Huaihai Road location) is a gem. For location, it can't be beat. centrally located in the chic Huaihai Road area close to lots of restaurant and shopping options including the fun entertainmnet district, Xin Tian Di, it can't be beat. Close to two metro lines and walking distance to great parts of the French Concession like Fuxing Road, its superior to most other other hotels. And the rooms, not large, but not small, are tastefully decorated with great bathrooms and really comfortable beds. THe food is not the best...but who cares with so many great restaurants in walking distance. Service is very good as well. Dollar for dollar you won't find a better deal and its one of the better hotels in town. Can't go wrong with this one!
Great Place
Everyone was great and we really like it there.
Good value
This hotel is a good value for the money. The room was nice and clean, comfy bed, good water pressure in the shower and free internet - Hooray! There is a Starbuck's and Costa Coffee just down the street for Western breakfast. Or if you prefer Chinese street food, you can get that around the corner too. The location was great and the staff was very friendly and helpful. I've stayed at a lot of hotels and I would stay there again.
French Concession winner hotel
This hotel is elegant, clean and comfortable. It's in a nice neighborhood with tree-lined streets and near charming spots in the former French Concession. The cab rides to other places of interest such as the Bund and the Shanghai Museum are short and inexpensive. The staff members were helpful with arranging tours and cabs.
Good hotel in the best area of Shanghai with decent rooms
The hotel is located in the middle of Huai Hai Lu, which is the best area of Shanghai, close to all the best restaurants and clubs (French Concession). The hotel is very clean with rather modern farm basic design. The staff is helpful and speaks English fluently. The fitness room is small but has everything one needs for a short stay. One comment though, I have complained that the water in my bathroom's sink do not drain properly and they said they would fix the problem but nothing really improved. The food in the hotel is not the best... but when you have so many options around you, this is nothing to be concerned about. All in all, good hotel for a decent price. No excess luxury but with high comfort level.
Hojo Huaihai Road
Good hotel, rooms not very big. Sort of a strange odor. Weird policy that they will charge you higher if you want a king bed. Beds and bath were comfortable. Location is awesome but I will probably book somewhere else, there is probably something better out there.
Shangai hotel - very nice
Very pleased with this hotel. Typically stay in the Bund area, this was a nice change. Shopping and restaurants were close - hotel lobby area nice for meetings and buffet lunch was great.
Great hotel except for noise
The room was well-appointed and comfortable. The bathroom was also very nice. Unfortunately, the walls were quite thin, and there was a lot of noise both in the room next to ours, the hall, and outside. Hotel location is extremely convenient. I would ask for a room at the back of the hotel, not facing the street. While you may not have as nice a view, you won't hear all of the noise.
Best Place in Xin Tian Di
Excellent Location and Room.
Location + Sauberkeit is good!
sehr schlechte Internetverbindung. Bin immer ins nächste Cafe gegangen.
Near the shopping and community mall. Very convenience
around location is really great. subway is close, big mall is also nearby.
Tolles Hotel in zentraler Lage
Gute Lage (div.
Service is just TERRIBLE! The people in reception speak absolutely NO ENGLISH. The most simple things they cannot understand, which makes everything impossible. They keep making mistakes, they charge the wrong amounts, and are just unacceptable. It is cheap, but it is cheap for a good reason. Many better alternatives in the area.
Cannot use the facilities there. But the staff.is good overall.

Receptions and staff very helpful in everything, friendly, respectful and good communication.
