Very run down, will never go back .
Stayed here a few years ago when it was a reasonable but old hotel Now I would not recommend to anyone Maintenance is non existent. Staff are all pleasant and seem resigned to the fact that the place is now a poor shadow of it's past.
The water pressure was so low, there is no bidet in the toilet. The aircond was not cold as it should be and the bed position was not in good position to get the aircond feel.
Staff was helpful and the manager had good local tips Property needs renovation More variety needed for breakfast
Convenient location, good free breakfast with lady in charge being a mine of tourist information, super friendly staff and spacious rooms, excellent value for money
Better than rxpected
Very quiet area. Lovely staff. Room larger than expected. Nice balcony.
The room said provide bathtub but it doesn’t provide at all.
Okay just for a night
Close to public transit. The hotel on the left and on the right of Hotel Mingood are both under construction so there is quite a bit of noise. The staff are friendly, especially the lady that provides breakfast (toast with peanut butter & strawberry jelly, cereal, orange slices, coffee, orange juice, and tea). The hotel is very old and there was always a wet spot on the carpet next to the toilet door.
Good. Friendly staff. Nice location. Facilities working.
Great value. I stay there often
To be recognised and welcomed by staff at all levels is very pleasing!
Hotel staff is friendly. The environment is compatible with the budget. Overall is recommended if you are looking for a budget and convenient place to stay.
Not really worth. Not muslim friendly because the toilet got no water tap for cleaning purpose. Need to take water from the bathroom sink which is far the toilet bowl itself. Breakfast only got bread n some cereals with drinks.
Dated hotel near the CAT free bus stop #8
Check-in was pretty fast. The hotel was a bit old but its ok Counter staff was friendly but they do not seem to know about the CAT free bus. Some have never heard of it, but the senior staff told me to walk to the nearest stop #11. But I have checked on the Net and it says stop #8, but the staff said the bus there does not go the full loop, which we later found out to be untrue!
Good location and worth your money
Hotel staffs are very helpful and friendly, breakfast is ok but not much variety and finishing fast.
Nice service, good location
Mingood - good value
Good value. Location on side street, so fairly quiet. Friendly atmosphere. Reasonably priced food cooked to order is available in addition to the Continental Breakfast provided.
Spacious Hotel Room!
Worth for money & spacious roOm! Fast check in, hospitality staffs & nearby local restaurants & hawkers.. easy to go for foods & sightseeing..
old school cheapie
yes the hotel is a bit faded, and yes the building is a bit old but what do you expect at this price! the rooms are large and breakfast was good. it had a bathtub! big fridge in room. kettle and hot water. I thought it was fanastic for the price and would come again as the staff work hard to keep it all working.
Fantastic value for money accommodation
If you come here acknowledging and accepting that this hotel hasn't undergone much upgrading since its 1980s heyday, and if you are an individual who really just requires that the basics are met with no glitz, then you will have a very pleasant stay here. Actually, this hotel performs better than some other hotels nearby whilst being around 30% cheaper. The free Wi-Fi was good enough to allow uninterrupted live streaming of online movies. The TV had English language channels with a good signal. The room was spacious (though dated). The bed was comfortable. The aircon functioned well enough. The breakfast was better than you'd imagine for this price-range. The staff, super friendly and helpful.
Need to improve the lightings, bathroom and carpet
satisfy
We had wedding ceremony to attend in Georgetown. So this was a good choice for our budget !!! nothing much to complaint :))
I reserve a nonsmoking room. the staff put me in a smoking room with windows that couldn't close in the bathroom. since outside is over 100 degree, the bathroom is hot and mosquito flew in. The blanket is dirty and the air condition is slow. I got irate from the mosquito bites and couldn't have a good sleep. Most of the staffs are Indians. Breakfast is crappy with only slices of bread and cereals.
Old but clean
Rooms were old but well cleaned , staff were fantastic, all smiles and very happy to help. Breakfast was very basic
value for money
For a budget hotel, the rate we paid is value for money. There were English TV programmes, and the staff spoke English and were very helpful. We especially like to mention a staff, Desmond. He went out of his way to make our stay a pleasant experience. However, there was an exception. When there was absolutely no water at all coming from the shower head and we asked for a change of room, we were told by a certain staff (on midnight shift) that we must understand that we are in a budget hotel. This is rude and unacceptable. Budget means basic and clean but it does not mean we have to accept faulty amenities.
Nice hotel with very friendly staff.
Nice hotel with super friendly staff. It's very well located close to the center of the city.
Disappointing Stay
Arrived very late to the hotel.. Toilet light was gloomy.. Too scary to shower.. Used condom inside trashcan
Good location, but leaves much to be expected
Hotel was in a good location, with good price. Facilities wise a little lacking. There was a dead cockroach under the dressing table. Lighting in hotel room was rather dark. Staff was very friendly and eager to help.
Best value hotel.
Great staff and decent room. Nice to get Marmite for the breakfast toast. Pleasant breakfast area on the roof makes a nice start to the day.
Convenient
Average for the price. Shower did not work on second day.
The building quit old but still in good condition but the staff were so kind and very polite.
Good location, friendly staff
Mingood is one of our favorites. It is an older hotel a bit worn but clean! Unfortunately there is construction noise for the next year or so - so ask for a quiet room.
Old and worn off hotel.
Really old with no refurbishment since built, think must be in the 70s. The floorings are still mosaic with outdated tiles. The toilet bowls, basin are all very old with stained. The blanket is a China made floral towel blanket n bedsheets are all yellowish. Definitely not worth more than RM100. Location even though claimed to be near town is actually far away from everything ie food and famous Penang heritage arts.
just ok
simple breakfast
Older hotel, with all necessities; my large room No. 403 had a million dollar view from the balcony. Helpful and delightful staff, breakfast lady Chia is a goldmine of information. Extended my stay, left for Thailand for a few days and staff ensured I returned to the same room. Quick walk to Penang Road and Chulia St, public bus stops, Komtar Tower/Prangin Mall. Building site next door though with occasional noise. Chulia St has more for younger travellers though.
NOT BAD,AVERAGE
THE HOTEL/ROOM WAS CLEAN ON THE DAY, I BOOKED 2 ROOMS FOR 2NITE BUT ONE OF THE ROOM'S AIR CONDITIONER DIDNT FUNCTION WELL.... TEMPERATURE HAD LOWER BUT THE AIR WAS NOT COOL ENOUGH OVERALL,THAT WAS AVERAGE..
Simple yet worthwile !
Pleasant stay, just one night, worth every single cent, friendly staff, right in the middle of Georgetown, comes decent with breakfast too. Strongly recommended.
Great staff and location
Fabulous staff helped me with my stressful Visa paperwork, and gave great information about where to go and what to do in Penang. Super outdated decor, but really clean.
Budget hotel
good for budget constraint travellers. room was considered big enough.
More than adequate
Helpful and friendly staff at reception, roof top café, room cleaning. Elevator much appreciated for handling baggage to upper floors. Have had comfortable stays here on previous occasions-no different this time. Would stay again when visiting Penang.
Basic but fine
We've stayed here before, and were happy to return. Sure it's an older, well-worn hotel that is showing its age, but it has everything you basically need at a good budget price, along with friendly, helpful and cheerful staff. It's location is close to the main historic area, and the simple breakfast is an added bonus. It's nothing flash, but it's where we like to stay when in Penang..
so-so condition
no hot water. room and toilet a bit smelly Breakfast only bread
Good for budget travellers & family
Everything works fine for me except the construction site (piling) next door during day time. Its worth what I paid for.
Damp, smelly, large rooms.
When we arrived a hot water tap was running a lot. The room smelt very damp and mouldy, beds were ok size. Next door had work being done and it was so loud it started early with what sounded like a large digger. Value for money isnt great and we left 2 days later to find somewhere else.
Good 'ol Mingood
Overall we had a very pleasant stay in a comfy cozy atmosphere 'ol hotel. Staff was very friendly and helpful.Location of the hotel was good. The only setback was the toilet/bathroom if it can be upgraded. Having a bathtub is good in every room but inconvenient for old people to climb in and the shower also is fixed overhead. The toilet has no bidet. Just a little improvision and the hotel will be great for all walks of life.
Rooftop continental breakfast a plus!
Great Staff
Great economy hotel in the heart of Georgetown. Dated but comfortable with very friendly and helpful staff. Rooftop continental breakfast a plus also!
Good for stay
It was a good stay with this kind of budget hotel, important is the location. I can recommend to others for their stay. But breakfast and parking slots are still not up to the mark.
Old school and rustic
Old school with a rustic charm. The room has a musty smell though, but that shouldn't stop you from having a stay here. Charming place, lovely neighbourhood.
Still okay.
Need refurbished. Look very old. Breakfast only bread. But economic hotel still okay.
good choice
overall, good, the aircon not so strong, very stuffy
It was a pleasant stay. Hotel was clean and very affordable. The complimentary breakfast could be improved a little though.
good budget hotel
Good budget hotel with clean large rooms and friendly staff in good location for town and buses
Outdated but clean
At first look, the rooms are small and very outdated. I must say that I was disappointed on the first night, though it was a clean room and bathroom. The staff from the front desk, to the cleaners, to the breakfast attendant were all so friendly and nice, that I forgave some shortcomings and enjoyed my stay. Breakfast is just toast, cold cereal, and oranges. But that was enough to get me up and going out for the day. The attendant at breakfast has good tips on where to eat for dinner. The front desk staff tracked down a phone that was left in a cab the night before and got it back for us. It would have been impossible on our own. They went way out of their way to get it back. They also let us leave our bags for the day after checking out which was very helpful. The location is convenient. It is about two blocks away from the street where the scooter rentals are located. There is a Subway Sandwich shop about a block away. There are many restaurants and drinking places within blocks.
Comfortable budget hotel in the centre.
Can't complain about it. Good value for money and no more than you can expect for a budget hotel in Georgetown.
Clean & Good Location
Basic amenities. Don't bother with the breakfast - bread and orange. Many eateries nearby. Safe for budget traveller.
Ended up not staying our 3 nights, no refund but that was expected
Abit old hotel
quite big space for a room bt anyhow still abit old building. however staff are friendly enough
Facilities: Nice ; Value: Bargain; Service: Good; Cleanliness: Tidy;

Good Budget Hotel
My husband and I stayed for only one night with price of 80++ including taxes. Pros: The room was big for a budget hotel. The breakfast was simple but nice. The hotel staffs were friendly. The parking space was provided. The wifi was good. Cons: The room was smelly
would reccomend!
Very helpfull staff, nice room, old fashioned but we stayed here last year and had to return.plenty for breakfast.plenty to see nearby.
Close to everything.
FAMILY ORIENTED HOTEL
Brought my wife, kids and mum-inlaw for a 3D2N stay. Hotel location is strategic. Cleanliness impeccable (don't be fooled by the dingy toilet lights). Spacious rooms, breakfast at balcony and parking bay available. Only downfall is the breakfast which could have included some eggs. They only have toasted bread and jams with coffee. Eggs and sausages are chargeable.
not much. the hotel is not super close to any amenities, eg supermarket is 250 metres away. The staff were friendly but the "breakfast included" was coffee from a vending machine, bread/toast, butter and jam. The hotel itself is old - my room had 7 different paint colours. The service was okay but the low point came when I checked out, to discover a fee that had been introduced on 1 June but not included in my room price, nor mentioned to me when I checked in or any time after. No manager on deck to sort the matter out so I didn't pay.
Older but clean hotel close to main centres
I moved this hotel based on others reviews and was not disappointed. The hotel staff were wonderful and friendly. When I asked to change rooms there was no issue. Everything worked. The aircon was good the rooms big. The tv reception and availability of channels excellent. At this price you can't go wrong.
Clean and comfortable budget hotel.
Hotel was close to the city centre of George town.
Small on scale, big on charm
Took my wife and two-year-old son for a short stay here to celebrate his birthday. We got ourselves a Double Room, 1 Queen Bed, Ensuite. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised with the size of both the room and the bathroom - the bathroom has a bath tub in it, and still has enough space for my wife to be comfortably in there with him to bathe him. And I reckon even if I were to brush my teeth in there while my wife bathes him, we'd still be comfortable! The whole interiors decor has a nice old-school, vintage feel about it, with modern amenities to ensure convenience. The lift looks as old as my old man, but still functions perfectly. Authentic Peranakan furniture dot the place throughout, but the hallways are lit with LED lights, and there's a flat screen TV in the room. All in all, apart from having to suffer from the usual tantrums of our two-year-old, the hotel ensured we didn't have to endure any other hardship. Will definitely stay here again for our next visit, unless we can afford E&O by then!
needs an update
The hotel needs to renewal. The bedlinnen was so old. For the rest is was okay. Everything is old but it was clean. The location is just outside of the old centre. 5 minutes walk and you're there.
value for your money...
it is good that the hotel comes with its own parking... the staff were really friendly and helpful... the room was spacious but the aircon was not powerful enough to make the room cold as fast as i wish for...but it was not a big problem since i always out. Don't hope much for the continental breakfast....
Facilities: Run-down; Value: Reasonable; Service: Basic; Cleanliness: Lacking;
i have stayed here a number of times and it is fine. .internet access was very poor since they changed providers
have stayed here 3 times now. clean and close to chulia st. TVs are old relics but at this price i dont care too much. new internet provider has caused problems and needs to be sorted. good rooftop for breakfast.
My experience is wifi got problem can't access and the toilet light is out of order.
It was good hotel no complaints! The staff was really nice and the cleaning lady on the 2nd floor was the best. Had a great sense of humor and really caring. could have been cheaper for the condition of hotel but was there during peak season so I am to blame.
near everywhere you will want to visit,
as always, friendly and helpful, like a home from home
A central position for most activities
I found this hotel to be quite rewarding and would recommend it as a good value budget facility. The breakfast although quite basic was sufficient to start the day. All the staff I met were both friendly and attentive to my needs.
needs makeover
The friendlyness of the staff makes up for the 'outlived' hotel. Bit poorly equiped but everything was working. A lot needs to be overhauled.
The staff where very helpful, and pleasant, had my visa for Thailand in one day for the cost of $40.......Negatives Dogs barking all night locked in shop opposite my room....tired all the next day, due to loss of sleep, moved room, OK but the staff not concerned about the dogs....Internet a waste of time, kept losing the connection after reading excellent reviews about the service...
During my Malaysian vacation I've stood in 3 different hotels in the same price and rating category. Mingood was the best. Spacious room, bathtub, fridge. Everything isnt new, but clean and tidy. Location is also good: walking distance to ferry, old town, shopping mall, busses. If you like soft pillows, you better BYO ;)
Its well located close to all the amenities
I loved the experience, we took a ferry from butter worth to the bus terminal, its well near the red garden food paradise, we loved the food there and the place, the architecture nearby in the Penang streets is great, reminded us of the intensity of the British, overall we had a nice stay only that a small insect was found in the hotel bed, i reccomend the hotel to do some serious vacuum cleaning of the room facilities, given its a bit old style. otherwise it was a great trip, and the taxi drivers in Penang are great people.
facilities in room are poor
I think the location of Mingood hotel is great because the street nearby is quiet and clean. The environment and facilities of the hotel in public area only are delicate and nice! but you will feel disappointed when you enter the room. The light in the room is dark. Sofa is not clean with many dirt. Washbasin is block and not clean... After all, since the price is not expensive, I have to console myself with the price... Because we can't expect more with such rate. and the staff: the aunties are very helpful and friendly!
Facilities: Shabby; Service: Below average; Holes in furniture covers, rusty fridge (no freezer door) = old and tatty, no free drinking water - trying to save every penny....going bust?
Centralised location. Big rooms.
Overall, hotel is OK save for the day's female reception... so 'cold'. guess she was just doing her job. Others were friendly and cheerful.
Good location
Modrate
Comfortable Older style Hotel
Very large room,, Bath Tub, Heaps of hot Water ... Staff very Friendly and efficient ... Breakfast quite OK I would stay again ..
You get what you pay for...
It is cheap for a reason. If you want a basic accommodation it should be okay. Pretty much everything is dated but they are 'functional'. For the price, no complaints from me.
Facilities: Unpretentious; Value: Affordable;
furniture arrangement not in proper n toilet light
toilet light is too dim n no slipper proviede in the bathroom
Ok place
Needs updating but very clean and staff are helpful. Easy access to tourist areas.
great location
ok
Distinctly average
This hotel is very dated and really needs some tlc. The bathroom in particular was so old, the toilet didn't flush properly and the shower wasn't great either. However, the bed was very comfortable and everything was as clean as it could be given how old it all is. Having said that, the staff were very nice and helpful. Wasn't too bad!
ALTHOUGH THE ROOM IS NOT THAT GREAT, BUT IS CLEAN , AND THE STAFF IS VERY FRIENDLY, WE STAY FOR 2 NITE, THE LOCATION IS GOOD , EASY TO REACH SHOPPING AREA.AND TAKING THEIR BUS IS ALSO QUITE CONVENTIENCE AND CONFORTABLE .
Quite Pathetic
Not recommended unless you want to stay for very cheap at a location that is close to the station and ferry terminal both!
budget hotel
Functional aspects such as being close to nearby markets, good connectivity to anypart of city and helpful staff are plus points.Room was average but ok for lone travellers without family.
We could not fault this economy hotel in anyway, the staff are outstanding in everyway and georgetown is walkable from this location. We enjoyed staying there.
friendly receptionist with quick check in and check out, spacious room with working order of air condition, hote and cold water, telephone, but very basic breakfast. At night time it is a wee bit dark to walk back to the hotel.
Just what I needed.
It is quiet with little street noise. WIFI @54Mb/s. Staff are very helpful. Have to walk a little to get to the main bus routes.Taxis can get here in a few minutes. Enough eateries.
HIGHLIGHT TO THE GUEST FROM HOTEL TO THE SEE SIGHT
SO FAR SO GOOD
Dated but central and offered good service.
Decided to book this hotel due to price and user reviews. I can confirm that this hotel has not been updated for a while. The decor and rooms are very dated, carpets are old and a bit tatty. Despite this i enjoyed my stay, the hotel staff was very friendly and helpful, the wifi works most of the time, and the location is very close to the centre of George Town. I recommend this hotel to those who are willing to sacrifice appearance for location and price.
Still a good budget choice for Penang
The Mingood is an older style budget hotel that we have visited several times over the years and it still has many plus points over the newer “boutique” renovations in Penang. It’s certainly not fancy but the rooms are spacious, baths now replaced by showers, good WiFi and a/c, safes and a simple breakfast are all provided for a fair price. The staff are also very friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable about their city.
