Perfection in Paradise
Absolutely stunning. It is rare to find a place that is better than the pictures, but this is! Friendly, helpful staff throughout our stay. The grounds and view of the ocean are beyond words. Breakfast brought to your room including fresh tropical fruit selection is a perfect way to start the day. The steady rhythm of the waves on the edge of the barrier reef lulls you to sleep. Several species of fish congregate right next to the dock in crystal clear water.
Walking into this hidden property is like walking into a dream. Every corner you turn is more beautiful than the last. We stayed in the over water suite with a gorgeous view of the lagoon and loved feeding the fish right off the deck. Very friendly cats visit daily to the open air sunroom. The sleeping area and can be completely closed off and does have air conditioning. The sunroom/kitchen bar is open air so it does not. Bathroom can be closed off but no ac in there either which wasn't an issue for us. Pack bug spray! The only complaint we had is that the bathroom has a pretty clear view to the other suite's sitting area. Made eye contact with neighbors a view times in the bathroom which was extremely awkward. There are a few bamboo shoots to kind of block the view but it's still a floor to ceiling window with no curtain to the shower or toilet. Other than that, it was an amazing room to stay for our honeymoon. Our room was cleaned daily with fresh towels, we received flower necklaces and welcome cocktails when we arrived, and the staff was very friendly and helpful. Absolutely a hidden gem.
Amazing property like a manicured jungle. Our room had a terrace on the water that had many beautiful fish just inches away including stingrays and sharks. Stunning views!
We appreciated the natural setting and the steps to preserve nature and the ocean. We enjoyed sitting on the deck and watching all of the beautiful fish and rays, wow! Loved the beautiful views and water access. We also loved the rustic but elegant vibe of the decor. Every piece looked carefully chosen and fit perfectly. The bed and linens were amazing and comfortable. The waterfront bungalow we stayed in was well equipped for us to make breakfast and snacks. So peaceful!!! A slice of paradise.
We stayed in the suite on the water and it was gorgeous. We had a little trouble finding the place with Apple Maps so probably best to use google maps. We saw stingrays and sharks right off the deck. And the most beautiful colorful fish! You can rent kayaks and SUPs. The lady who gave us the tour of the property was so nice and helpful. Power went out on the island so we slept with the doors open but I feel like we got lucky with power going out since sleeping with the doors open you can hear the waves and it’s so peaceful. No bugs came in, just 2 of the sweetest cats. Startled me at first but once I realized it was a cat in the bed I was fine :) If you don’t want to stay in the water front suite the other suites looked just as nice and the deck for the hotel is amazing. We got there before check in and we were able to lay out on the deck and swim and snorkel. Such an amazing stay!!
Where to start....this is definitely a boutique hotel with limited rooms and interesting decor. Overall its beautifully decorated, but there was no separation for the bathroom or shower area. Not to mention there was a living wall IN the shower. It made it very difficult to take a shower. The whole hotel is built on raised floors which makes me wonder how creatures dont get in the rooms. The kitchen area is outside of the room which is unsanitary with stray cats and other animals around. This includes cups, dishes, utensils, microwave. There was also a language barrier with the employees which will make things difficult if you dont speak French. If you needed something it was hard to get help because either no one was around they didn't understand. There seemed to be a lack of customer service and willingness to help. Not to mention only certain employees could do certain duties which didnt help if you needed to check out, buy something, or ask for something. They only serve breakfast daily and you have to fill out what time you want it delivered the night before, but the time didnt seem to matter because it was delivered whenever it was ready. You will also need to rent a car or get a taxi everywhere you go since there are limited options nearby for food.
Simply a terrific boutique hotel. Fantastic location on the edge of the water. Easy access to snorkeling, kayaking, etc. Wonderful rooms and common areas. Designed by the courteous and helpful owner… Who is a fantastic artist and interior designer. Terrific mix of simplicity, utility, and sophistication. We will be back!
Spectacular snorkeling with authentic flair
French Polynesia is expensive and this boutique hotel was not only an amazing snorkel location but also charming and authentic. Large enough for me, my hubs and parents to share and the team there was so helpful. But be aware if you go to the area during off season, some restaurants are closed the early part of the week and grocery store has limited hours. So plan accordingly! But the snorkel was stellar, the only better snorkeling we saw was way out by the reef on a small boat in Bora Bora.
Our stay was very enjoyable. I loved the eclectic vibes of this place. Having our morning breakfast brought to our patio was a great start to the day. We were also able to use the kayaks to paddle out to the motu which was a great experience. I would recommend staying at Hôtel Fenua Mata'i'oa
This place was fantastic. We arrived very early before check in but the receptionist checked us in and made it very easy for us. We were allowed the run of the place until our room was ready. We received a beautiful fresh flower lei and a very tasty welcome drink. There are many different common rooms to relax in and feel very private. Our room was absolutely beautiful and just like the pictures portrayed online. We had our own private deck which was great to sit out on and watch the fish and the waves crashing on the reef. It was a very peaceful, calm and quiet stay which we needed after a long cruise. Everyone there made us feel special including Eileen, Anaise especially. Also the young man who helped with our very heavy luggage. I would return to this place again if/when we ever come back. We fell in love with this beautiful place.
The owner Eleen has created the most relaxing, zen, amazing place. Much to see and appreciate as she was a designer in her earlier years. It will sink into you as you spend time exploring this very special place. Not known for it's food-(no restaurant onsite), busy bar etc.-but SPECIAL And the beds are amazing!!!! Breakfast delivered to your room-wonderful staff Off the beaten path-great ocean view cafe 3 minutes walk This is the place if you truly want to relax and unwind.
Well, I can honestly say that this is the best hotel I have ever stayed in. It is so beautiful and has so many lovely touches, everywhere you look there is something interesting. Eileen is an absolute delight and all the staff are friendly and enthusiastic. It is the mist extraordinary hotel and we really loved every minute of our time there. If we were to return to French Polynesia I wouldn’t even think about looking anywhere else. I hope so much that we get to return soon. Thank you so much for sharing your hotel with us Eileen.
What a unique and eclectic property! Very tropical feeling and they have tons of lounge chairs and couches everywhere to chill. They have a super friendly kitty who visited often and I fell in love with. The negatives were the main receptionist spoke almost zero English, and they were doing construction right next to our suite- I complained but it continued on and off. Although we were out and about most days, one afternoon we wanted to chill within the outdoor area of our suite, but it was too noisy. I complained but all they conveyed (in French) was “20 more minutes” which turned out to be over an hour. At least they could’ve offered a free breakfast or bottle of wine to compensate. Ah well…we still enjoyed it there. If you’re looking for a more resort experience with pools and restaurants, this isn’t the place. But if you want a quiet (sans construction) and chill experience, this is a nice place.
The hotel was very comfortable, unusual and eclectic in a jungle like setting. Each lodging had a kitchenette and eating area. There were several living rooms in the hotel with original decorations. A pick up service was available to eat at a good nearby restaurant. The owner was charming and helpful. I would recommend this hotel.
Amazing place to stay - lovely people and a beautiful location.
Best Hotel in Moorea!
Amazing, private experience with great staff!
Photos do not do it justice! It has very spacious & multiple lounge areas both indoor & outdoors. The dock allows for people to go into ocean with many various species of fish, sting rays, etc. Also the dock allowed the boat tour to bring us directly back to the hotel. The furniture & art is unique, hand selected and creative. I can not express how incredible the ambiance was. The room was a junior suite with patio bar, table , microwave and 2 fridges. Bathroom was spacious with lovely shower heads. King bed was incredibly comfortable , something that I find not always the case. The service was excellent & friendly. They were helpful to book tours and taxis for us. We stayed 4 nights and wish we stayed longer. Will definitely come again!
We had an outstanding experience. Eileen and her staff were so friendly and accommodating. The ocean views and ambiance were breathtaking and our honeymoon stay was unforgettable.
Beautiful hotel. Stayed in the romantic suite with the private beach. Loved every minute! Staff were lovely and attentive. Lots of greenery, meaning lots of bugs. The lagoon was perfect for snorkelling - so many fish and sharks and sting rays come down at night. Kayaks/paddle boards available to use to get out to snorkel at different places in the lagoon. Also kitchen area for basic cooking was useful. Would love to come back!!
It is a beautiful hotel and an amazing view.
Our stay on Mo'orea was magical in a big part as a result of Hotel Fenua Mata'i'oa. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcomed, wanted, and cared for. A tremendous amount of thought went into the layout of the grounds, sitting areas, and rooms. Hotel Fenua Mata'i'oa seems to have been designed by someone with an eye for design, comfort, uniqueness, and romance. Our stay was nothing short of enchanting.
My wife and I nearly cried on the day we had to leave this beautiful hotel. It was one of the most spectacular properties either and I had ever been to, and we felt so beautifully cared for by the staff, particularly the owner, Eileen. From the arrival with flower leis and a luscious cocktail, to the property which is entirely surrounded by vivid turquoise water, to our spectacular bedroom with a bath/shower surrounded by plants and a private beach, we never wanted to leave the property, and only did for a few tours. Other than that, why would you want to be anywhere else but with that view! We also had massages at the property that were fantastic. Every detail was cared for and beautiful. We’ve had a truly remarkable trip in FP but Hotel Fenoa Mata’i’oa is the place we most deeply want to return to.
This is a most excellent Boutique Hotel. It is not glitz and Glamour, but it is Authentic Polynesian with a Very Nice touch of class everywhere you look. The grounds are incredible. The Common areas are mainly unused but so beautiful. Eileen and her staff are magnificent. I highly recommend the Prestige Lolakalani Suite with your own over the water private dock.
Hotel is challenging to find with a rental car. Very small signage, looks like you turning down a driveway. Once you pass this challenge, you are in for a nice surprise. You enter the property through a path with tall foilage all-around. The property and room have character and are charming. The pillows are firm.
This hotel is beautiful, the staff very nice and helpful. I stayed there for a week and had a great time
Charming, intimate boutique hotel. Each room is different. We were right on the lagoon. Hostess and staff were delightful. Thank you for the hospitality! Merci!
Good beds, loved the cats and kayaking. Gardens are lovely. Funky decor. Helpful.
Highly recommended
Amazing! Beautiful place made with love. Relax watching the Laguna, look the fish and sharks, take a kayak or just watch the sunset (or sunrise..) We enjoyed every moment
Beautiful setting. Lovely garden setting. Friendly staff. Helpful in booking restaurants and transportation. Limited English.
My daughter & I spent 4 delightful nights here after a cruise. The staff was wonderful & helpful. We were greeted with a lei & delicious welcome drink. The property was amazing & one of the most beautiful locations I have ever experienced. We had an amazing suite with our private dock. It was so unique & even came with a couple of cats that we loved! We sat outside in the evenings & watched all different kinds of fish swim by. Was very cool. I would love to return some day although it is half way around the world!
The hotel had so much charm. It is right on the water and easy parking. It is a little hard to find which is part of the charm. We are planning on going back.
A beautiful, unique place to stay!
Loved every minute.
We greatly appreciated the friendliness of the staff and how they promptly answered and/or addressed questions and concerns. We were able to see many different types of fish, eels, stingrays, black finned sharks etc. right from the deck of our accommodations. The ambiance was beautiful and tropical. This was a wonderful place to relax and unwind. Thank you
We stayed here for 4 nights and enjoyed it very much. Sharks and rays in front of the property. Beautiful grounds and friendly staff. Deuwod stay here again.
Hotel Fenua is beyond beautiful. Our room we originally booked was unfortunately unavailable, but we were upgraded to the presidential suite at no extra charge. The staff was happy to book excursions for us, and provide us with options for other activities around Moorea. The property is on the lagoon and we were fortunate enough to see stingrays and sharks from the wraparound deck. Some friendly cats to keep you company. Would recommend, especially if you're looking for a unique stay with a French Polynesian atmosphere.
Nice little secluded piece of Moorea
The hotel is very quiet and secluded. The weather did not cooperate which has nothing to do with the hotel. It is very welcoming, with very pretty grounds.
Following a week of Sailing with friends in Bora-Bora, we decided that a final night stay in Moorea would be a good end to our trip. We discovered that Fenua Mata'i'oa had a 3-bedroom suite that was perfect for our group. Nicely decorated and comfortable, we settled in for a luxurious night. We were early, but Eileen greeted us warmly and the staff took care of our luggage while offering a welcome cocktail by the lagoon. Breakfast the next morning was perfect. Would stay again and again.
This has been the worst experience I've had in my two decades of international travel. Thanks to Eileen, the hotel manager/owner? We had not been at the hotel for one or two hours when we decided to go to the nearest convenience store to grab some items when she had already entered the suite w/out our consent, she stated that "housekeeping" entered to do turndown service as that's what they do. HOWEVER, no turndown service was ever done and everything was as we had made it. We never saw housekeeping around during our stay, and believe she was the alleged housekeeping snooping because we had asked for additional sheets/linens, which she offered to RENT for additional ~$60. We politely declined and decided to grab the sheets from the couch. She was upset we did such thing because according to her we rented a 3 king size, 3 bedroom suite for 6 people...which was advertised by Expedia. However, we NEVER explicitly requested nor stated that we had such sleeping arrangements of 2 adults to sleep per bed. We respected the 6 guest that we booked, we booked an ENTIRE suite, never had a hotel prohibited a guest from sleeping on the couch if they so desired. After we asked for privacy, she went in again when stepped out of the property. This review has limited characters and limited a more thorough review, also no allowance for pictures but we have all the proof. Expedia should disassociate from this property. 0 respect for privacy requests &0 professionalism talking back at us rudely.
It’s a simply beautiful property that is one of a kind. The overwater suite is fantastic as it’s on the water so you just hop out to snorkel right off the front door. It’s a small, intimate property that is surely unlike the nearby more expensive resorts.
This was a beautiful stay. Wonderful service. Amazing atmosphere. Great local restaurants that pick you up for free. Swimming was amazing. Very good local supermarket only 5 minutes walk. Very much enjoyed this hotel.
This is a very unique property, and the staff is very warm and welcoming. We stayed in the Prestige suite, overwater, and loved it.
We loved the beautiful property and the natural grounds around it. Step directly into the lagoon. The proprietor and her assistants are wonderful. Great location.
The hotel was extremely nicely decorated!!!! The views were great. However, there is no beach. It is located next to a lagoon, but you cannot really swim there and there is no snorkel to do. We had a car, so it was easy to go to other beaches. The owner is very nice. It is super amazing how she arranged the rooms. For example, we have a garden in our bathroom you just have to go and see it.
Hotel Fenua Mata’i’oa was perfection. The decor was incredibly artistic, original and welcoming. It definitely gave the feeling a true hidden garden oasis. Our bungalow was extremely comfortable and was also incredibly beautiful and well-appointed. All the common areas to relax (and there are very many) were comfortable and well-designed. We learned that the owner is a designer by trade and her passion for it really shows through every small detail. The lagoon is easily accessible as the dock is on the property so swimming and kayaking etc are all on site in the gorgeous teal water. The owner Eileen and all staff were extremely kind, attentive and genuine. You can tell it’s a very happy place to be. We also enjoyed visits from the well cared for resident kitties. Will book at the lodge exclusively when returning to M’oorea as it far exceeded all expectations. It was our favorite stay within French Polynesia!
Excellent, beautiful, eclectic, cat friendly and amazing
A Stunning Boutique Hotel // Highly Recommend
Hôtel Fenua Mata'i'oa is one of the most beautiful boutique hotels I have ever stayed in. The rooms are large and clean with all amenities needed. The outdoor kitchen area with the fridge and kettle for making coffee and storing leftovers or drinks was so wonderful. The community space was gorgeous and was spread out so it felt both community based and private. Eileen was wonderfully helpful and helped us book all our activities from swimming with the whales to massages. I can't recommend highly enough!
My wife and I loved the design and feel of Hotel Fenua Mata'i'oa. Everywhere that we spent time at the hotel provided new discoveries and was both relaxing and very interesting. This is the opposite of a standard hotel room with lush greenery, eclectic art and collections, cool design, delicious cocktails and nice people. We also took their kayak across the channel to snorkel with sharks and rays. It was a highlight of our trip to French Polynesia, and we will definitely stay there again if we are ever back on Moorea.
Beautiful Location and Friendly People
Beautiful hotel right on the water. They greet you with baggage help and will hold your luggage if you arrive early or need to leave late. Extremely accommodating and happy to help with any of our needs and answering questions. We stayed in the suite with a group of 6 and had plenty of space for everyone. Loved the view of the sunrise over the water. There are some language barriers but they are minor and overall we had no issues with our lack of French. We would stay here again in the future.
The most beautiful place to stay on the island, even better than the pictures. Mo’orea is better than Bora Bora in my opinion!
A truly wonderful place.
A Hidden Gem
This is a dream of a place especially if you prefer authenticity to manicured lawns. The rooms are partly an outdoors logia and also a bedroom with a/c. The whole is reached along paths through tropical forest and boardwalks by the sea link the common areas, with brightly coloured fish swimming right up to these. We were welcomed with lei and tropical cocktail. There is no restaurant but the hotel will order in for you from a selection of local restaurants.
Beautiful place right next to the ocean with a great view. We had a amazing time there.
Very unique and well laid out. Wonderful host who is always available.
This hotel is not even a hotel. It is a magical retreat. The whole place transports your to an even more tropical paradise while you already thought you were in the most tropical place on Earth. The central garden is like out of a movie. The waterfront is a relaxing and nighttime sitting on the deck is like sitting on the edge of the planet while property cats come hand out and watch the sharks and fish travel by. I can't wait to come back here.
Gorgeous boutique hotel that is authentic Moorea
Hotel Fenua Mataioa is a very special place. We loved every minute of our stay there. The owner has managed to create a space that is authentic Moorea and harmonious with nature. Her beautiful art surrounds you at every turn. We feel blessed to have found this wonderful place. It was close to magic mountain, tiki village, Belvédère outlook and wonderful diving and snorkeling right from the property. There were wonderful restaurants nearby as well. This stay felt very authentic and we felt immersed in Polynesian culture and nature here.
Overall we had a lovely stay. The grounds are beautiful with wonderful gardens. They are currently doing some construction which offered a little bit of noise. Lagoon access is terrific though it's a little too shallow to really swim there. Beautiful sunset spot with great outdoor seating.
This place is quite special. The best way to describe it is a boutique resort. It's not a resort at all with a max of maybe 8 or so rooms. The property is curated with a mix of fruit plants and flowering plants. It feels as if you have entered a majestic jungle. As you walk around the property it's a lovely space. Quiet and serene. Right on the water. They also provide snorkel, kayak, and paddle board equipment. They have a bar where they can make limited drinks. All the staff are super lovely. The breakfast is amazeballs. Highly highly recommend. We had such a great experience we extended our stay.
Upon arriving I was met with a drink, a lei, and someone to go get my bags and bring them to me. The grouds are incredibly beautiful as are the rooms. Hospitality at its best!
The property grounds are beautiful and in a great location. Apart from this I don’t have much positive to say about my stay. The staff treated us terrible from the moment we arrived. After we arrived at check in time staff assured us our room would be ready in 45 mins. 2.5 hours later they escorted us to the room to find out 3/4 of the electric outlets and tv did not work. Additionally, the sink facet was broken (later accusing us of breaking this). During our wait for the room they insisted we use their “on property” kayaks free of charge however, upon checkout they informed us we owed $200 additional for the kayak, facet, and for using the shampoo, conditioner, and oil provided in the bathroom communal dispensers. The property was under construction during our stay which we were not made aware of prior to our stay and they advertised having a spa but upon further inquiry from other guests we were informed there was no such thing. Such a shame to have been in paradise on such beautiful grounds and to have paid decent money for an experience that turned into a nightmare hassle including accusatory, harassing emails and a threatening voicemail demanding $200 or we would be turned into the consulate with no prior verbal contact indicating their issues. We decided to pay this and move on with our trip because ultimately our time was way more valuable than dealing with their accusations and threats. Needless to say…we won’t be back nor recommend this stay to anyone in the future.
This place is magical. We stayed at the princess suite with our own private deck and small beach. The suite is huge with many different areas. The view from the deck is just amazing. The water in front of the hotel has the most fish than anywhere else. We loved watching both sunset and sunrise from our deck. This is the best place we have ever stayed!
Heaven on earth! Eileen, the owner, has an artists touch. This property is just stunning. We could only spend one night here, and I regret it. Eileen gave us a tour upon our arrival and we were presented with beautiful hand crafted leis and drinks decorated with flowers. She is so kind and friendly! We were staying in a tropical rainforest along a lagoon. There were sharks and rays swimming in the water! We had a private patio tucked into never ending greenery and a small kitchenette outside also. We ordered breakfast and were able to specify the delivery time. It was placed on our patio and there was a light knock at the door to signal its arrival. Breakfast was not cheap, but I will not soon forget sitting in that gorgeous space and having a quiet, peaceful breakfast with my hubby. Thank you Eileen for a very memorable stay.
Relaxing, private, comfortable alternative to big resorts. I would stay here again in a minute.
Amazingly gorgeous property that is even more beautiful than the pictures.
Peaceful, beautiful hotel
What a great spot. Literally on the lagoon...you swim right off the deck. Small, quiet and beautifully decorated. I wish we coild have stayed longer. More privacy and personality that the big name spot we went next. The bed was comfy, as were the deck chairs. Loved having little mini kitched in our room. Sippong coffee watching the sunrise was epic. Will be back for sure...
Wonderful romantic place. Perfect postcard of what you’ll expect in Moorea Easy to stroll around with a small car or ask the owner to arrange for the various beautiful tour she propose The staff is amazing and the breakfast options pretty tasty to be enjoined in an unbelievable environment
Magnifique !!!!!
Is the best accommodation we had ever stayed. The place is like a dream. Eleen the owner every day takes care of your needs. tours, restaurantes, etc. When we just came in to the Hotel we thought we were in the jungle with ocean view. Every single corner is superb. We are just amazed of the beautiful decorations everywhere on this place. Staff super friendly. Kevin & Claudia Minvielle.
Amazing place and I’m so glad I got to celebrate my bday here
Eileen has created a unique, beautiful space inside and out with treasures around every corner. Just Magical. Merci Beaucoup!
Romantic gem! 💎
Wow! We stayed on the water and it was so beautiful and romantic! This place is magical, charming and the hosts, so welcoming! It was a special treat to be guests at this gem! A true island experience. Māuruuru!
Paradise
What an amazing experience we had at fenua mata'i'oa in Moorea ! I don’t even know where to begin. From the minute you walk in and until the last minute is was a great pleasure! Charming , cozy and comfortable place with incredible overlook on turquoise water . The establishment is beautifully decorated by beautiful inside and out.Eileen , with a warm smile she will take care of you and all your needs !!! I want to thank all the hardworking stuff , they all greet you with a smile and always are ready to help ! We love it and recommend to anyone!!
First of all, before I even got to this UNBELIEVABLE DREAMY property, I was in close contact (through email) with Eileen (The Owner). Our communication was divine. She was friendly from the start and very accommodating even before we arrived. Once we got to Moorea and to Hotel Fenua Mata'i'oa, we were blown away by the incredible design of this unique luxury boutique hotel. We were greeted as if we were long lost friends after communicating so much before the trip. I was so excited to arrive at such a jewel on the lagoon in Moorea. The Hotel was absolutely gorgeous. From the incredible foliage and natural wood, to the private bungalows that were decorated tastefully and with much thought. I was really taken by the friendly, professional, and outstanding treatment we received the entire time from arrival to departure. I really did not want to leave. The entire staff made us feel like we were royalty. Eileen went out of her way to make sure we were happy. We were greeted with the most beautiful flowers. Our Villa was decorated just perfectly for my daughters 25th bday with gorgeous flowers throughout the entire place. We stayed in the LOKELANI Suite (Villa) which was just spectacular. This Villa had it's own private garden, bar area, beach and private sundeck. It was really special. Breakfast was absolutely fabulous& fresh daily. Eileen recommended the Holy Steak House for dinner. It was awesome! Eileen also set up my rental car. I highly recommend this property! 5 STARS *****
Ocean-Front Tropical Stay
By far the most unique and amazing hotel I have ever stayed in. I was FaceTiming family to share the beauty and uniqueness of the stay! It feels as if you are transported to a jungle but also a work of art. The drinks and snacks were fantastic, the room was just beautiful, we loved getting to sit on the deck right on the water in the morning and evenings (a great place to see sting rays and sharks) and the location is very near one of the best beaches on the island! The room can feel more rustic, so if you are looking for more luxury, you probably want to go to a Sofitel or Hilton.. or another island. We can’t wait to stay here again, our visit was not long enough!
